The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “3 AWAY TRIPS HAVE BROUGH WITH THEM 3 DEFEATS AND WE’RE LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK TONIGHT “ Tonight we welcome Barnoldswick in what is our first home league game of the season. 3 away trips have brought with them 3 defeats and we're looking to bounce back tonight. Barnoldswick are a good side and have had a decent start to the season with a couple of important FA Cup victories. They like to get he ball down and play the right way where possible. So far for Gate we haven't been constantly good enough. We've shown glimpses of good play but haven't translated that to 3 points as yet. Home form is vital for any team and it'll be key for us this season. I'm hoping for a better performance than I recent weeks and we can get some much needed points on the board. Up the Gate

Saturday 5th August 2017 FA Cup Extra Prelim Round

Kick Off: 3pm PICTURE BY ALBERT COOPER

GATES CUP DREAM OVER IN THE HANDS OF ASHTON Squires Gate bowed out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking this weekend to Ashton Athletic. What was billed as a tight game in the build up was much different on the day with the visitors winning with ease. Danny Penswick named three new signings in the starting 11 for this game, all three playing in the FA Cup for the first time having signed from Blackpool Wren Rovers. Gate made a slow start to the game going behind after 11 minutes. After Gary Pett turned and shot over the bar it was clear it wasn't going to be Gate's day. Ashton allowed too much time outside the box, striker Joel Brownhill firing past Fletcher. Gate's first meaningful effort on goal didn't come until the half hour mark. Brett Dawson sending a rasping shot which was saved by Martin Pearson who spilled the ball, Mark Buchan unable to capitalise on the loose ball which was cleared. Ashton would grab a second goal just before half time. Midfielder Jamie Harrison lining up a freekick from the edge of the box to beat Ben Fletcher to his left hand side. The goal doubling Ashton's lead into half time.

HALF TIME: SQUIRES GATE 0 ASHTON ATHLETIC 2

The visitors would continue their good form into the second half taking the lead nine minutes in. Striker Joel Brownhill grabbing his second of the game when he was allowed to walk through Gate's midfield with nobody closing him down. Gary Pett had another rare chance for Gate on 63 minutes but his header was over the bar. Midfielder Dean Ing was introduced on the 60 minute mark and almost made an instant impact. His cross in from the right hand side almost went straight in, the follow up corner cleared off the line from Pett's header. Ashton strike Joel Brownhill would cap of a perfect afternoon for himself on the 75th minute when he fired in

BAD FIRST HALF PERFROMCE LEFT GATE LEAVING HANLEY WITH NOTHING Gate would make an encouraging start to the season in their longest journey of the campaign and had the chance to counter after five minutes. From a Hanley corner Mark Buchan picked up the ball but his pass couldn't find Brett Dawson who was in position to attack the Hanley back line. The game was full of stops and starts all afternoon with several fouls and freekicks for either team. On 13 minutes Ben Fletcher set Gate on the counter after saving a soft shot, Tarren Moxon winning a corner. Then that corner was cleared by the homeside who launched their own attack, but just ran the ball out. The homeside would open the scoring after 16 minutes Neville Thompson allowed too much space inside the box to tap in after no closing down from Gate.As quick as the first goal went in, the second would follow. Dan Cope this time free in the box to slot past Ben Fletcher after the cross from the left wasn't closed down. Aain from Gate's attack it would be the homeside who'd capitalise. Dawson's corner was caught by the keeper who sent a long ball and found Hanley's attack. Theo Stair on hand to fire past Fletcher to make it 3-0. Fletcher was then on hand to deny Hanley on 26 minutes with a quality reaction save, tipping the ball over the bar. The resulting corner was fired into the back post where the defender up from the back, headed across goal and out. HALF TIME: HANLEY TOWN 3-0 SQUIRES GATE The second half was a much better performance from Gate who looked to have woke up after a half time dressing down Chances for Nick Greenall who's looping header didn't catch out the keeper and Paul Carroll's shot at the back post which went wide both better chances than any created in the first half. Dean Ing, making his first start for the club, stung the keepers gloves on 60 minutes from outside the area as Gate got closer to making the break through. Manager Danny Penswick has the chance to grab himself a goal at the back post on 65 minutes, but his touch was soft from the freekick and easily gathered by the keeper. The homeside then went down the other end and went close again, Thompson looking to add a second fired narrowly wide. With the last kick off the game the homeside would undo all Gate's good second half work. A poor clearance falling to the Hanley right back who found the feet of Dan Cope, Cope with a sharp turn and shot to beat Fletcher.

GATE SUFFERED ANOTHER DEFEAT TO LEAGUE NEW BOYS AND START SEASON WITHOUT A WININ 3 GAMES

League new boys Charnock Richard, on the back of two promotions in two years, posed a tough test for Penswick men after winning their first two games. The homeside could have opened the scoring virtually straight from kick off after just 20 seconds. Ben Fletcher having to be alive to palm away the effort. Gate had two early chances of their own. First Dean Ing took aim from outside the box but his effort was always rising. Then the officials blew up for a foul in the ox after Gate had a great chance from the corner. It was from a corner that the homeside would take the lead. After 10 minutes the corner found Carl Grimshaw at the back post to head in. Gate, looking for an instant reply, went close when Ing headed wide from Mike Hall's freekick at the back post. The homeside would grab their second of the game after 15 minutes. The ball falling to winger Mark Woods on the left of the box for him to fire across the face of goal and past Fletcher. Former Gate midfielder Joe Noblet could have made it 3-0 just minutes before half time when he tried to curl a shot into the bottom corner, but Fletcher reacted well to push the ball out for a corner. From the resulting corner Carl Grimshaw was denied with Alex Colquhoun heading the striker's effort off the line. Half Time: Charnock Richard 2-0 Squires Gate Sadly for Gate, the second half was a nightmare start. After just two minutes into the half, the homeside extended their lead. Another corner in was fired under the crossbar to where Luke Gibson was, forward from defence, to head in. Charnock then looked to further extend their lead with some lovely football around Gate's box but eventually fired over the bar. A freekick from the homeside was then palmed clear by Ben Fletcher which led to a counter for Gate, but nobody could reach Danny Green's eventual cross. A soft freekick was given against Dean Ing on 64 minutes and it led to another goal for the homeside. Former Gate midfielder Joe Noblet crossing in from the freekick to find the head of Grimshaw, for his second of the game. Gate had a great chance to pull a goal back on 66 minutes, Moxon laid the ball back to Jordan Casey who find Mark Buchan, but the strikers shot was blocked. Much like their other goals, Charnock added another from a corner. Centre back Luke Gibson heading in at the back post for an easy fifth goal. Gate would grab a goal of their own two minutes later when a mistake from the home team keeper allowed Mark Buchan an easy finish to roll the ball into the net. Moxon could have then added another for Gate, but a last ditch tackle from Sanders for Charnock denied the striker. The homeside could have had a sixth goal after 78 minutes again from a corner, but the right back's shot hit the inside of the post and fired out. Sub Jack Williams showed great feet when he looked to get a shot on goal, but he was crowded out by the defence and his shot was blocked. Gate again denied the homeside late on when Danny Penswck headed the ball off the line after Ben Fletcher had come out to close the ball down. Two minutes before full time, sub Jack Williams would get the goal his second half impact deserved. He picked the ball up inside the box before driving the ball low into the opposite corner to open his account for the club.

GATE SUFFERED ANOTHER DEFAT TO MAKE IT NO WIN IN FOUR GAMES After a promising first half for Danny Penswick men, the hosts ran riot with three goals in the second half. Gate gave new signing Jordan O’Mahoney a first start after signing on loan from Bamber Bridge. Midfielder Mark Thornber also started his first game as did forward Jack Williams. Gate could have opened the scoring as early as three minutes, but Jack Williams flashed a cross across the face of goal. Irlam themselves had an early chance, but headed over from a corner. Gate then had a golden chance to score when manager Danny Penswick picked up the ball on the edge of the six yard box. He got his head up and fired towards goal, but his shot was blocked by Mark Thornber. Debutant Jordan O’Mahoney put in superb tackle on 15 minutes to deny Irlam inside his own box. The defender winning the ball and setting Gate away to attack, but his team mates couldn’t capitalise. The homeside would open the scoring after 20 minutes in unfortunate fashion. Defender Alex Colquhoun putting the ball into his own net after good work from Irlam winger Marcus Perry. Irlam then looked to appeal for a penalty on 22 minutes when O’Mahoney put in a strong tackle. The defender cam away with the ball though much to the annoyenss of the homeside who’s appeals were turned down. Gate’s last chance of the half again involved the young centre half. He looked to rise highest from Penswick’s corner, but was just beaten to the ball.

HALF TIME: Irlam 1-0 Squires Gate Gate keeper Ben Fletcher had to be alert at the start of the second half with two early chances for Irlam. First he came and punched a corner clear off an Irlam defenders head. Then a sort back pass let in Irlam on goal, but Fletcher reacted well to save. Manager Danny Penswick could have levelled the game for Gate on 64 minutes but his volley was wide after a good lay off from Mark Thornber. Irlam would grab their second of the game in the 69th minute. A clever ball played in between the Gate defence sent through Jordan Icely who slotted past Fletcher in net. Gate had the chance to grab a goal back but Tarren Moxon’s soft shot was saved after he ran onto a good through ball from Jack Williams. Irlam would grab their third goal of the game wit 10 minutes to go. Sub Tim Kinsella bursting into the right hand side of the box before firing low under Ben Fletcher. The homeside would then grab a third late on. An other unfortunate own goal for Gate, this time from defender Moorhead who put too much on his back pass to beat Fletcher.

LAST TIME OUT

Runcorn Town 1 Barnoldswick Town 0 Saturday 26th September 2017/ NWCFL Premier Division/ The Pavilions/Attendance: 167 Yet another glorious position for a football ground, set high in the Pennine Hills, Barnoldswick once in Yorkshire until someone moved the border so now it’s in Lancashire. It is a very picturesque Town though. No wonder Lancashire wanted it in their County. Runcorn started the game well, an early chance fell to Cairns who stabbed the ball past Barlick keeper King but a quick recovery by Airey cleared the danger. Barlick attacked and a low driven cross from Melia was hacked clear by Rimmer. A cross from Thelwell found Cairns who headed towards Reed but Hodgkinson read the danger well and headed clear. A powerful shot from Carberry caused King to mishandle but the keeper recovered quickly to grab hold of the loose ball. When Melia cut inside his fierce shot was parried by Runcorn keeper Metcalf. Barlick were pressing at this stage and goal bound efforts from Dale and Melia were both blocked. With the perfect response Runcorn took the lead in the 17th minute, a long clearance by Metcalf was headed on by Thelwell to CRAIG CAIRNS who immediately lobbed the ball goal wards over King who despite a desperate effort was unable to keep the ball out of the net. A free kick from James was powerfully headed goal wards by Thelwell bringing a good save from King. A tremendous 25 yd volley from Lloyd was still rising as it cleared the crossbar to the relief of Metcalf. Cairns had a goal disallowed following a narrow offside decision by the assistant Referee who was well placed. In the last minute of the half a free kick from Runcorn’s Evans failed to beat the 1st defender who headed clear as the Referee blew for half time. Cairns and Reed were causing major problems to the Barlick defence, when Cairns drove a cross in Blades did well heading the ball to safety. Melia operating down the right looked very lively for Barlick but his cross was not pulled back enough and Metcalf held onto the ball before clearing the danger. A through ball to Barlick striker Thelfall produced a lob that flew well over Metcalf's crossbar. It was proving to be an excellent advert and example of North West Counties football with two evenly matched teams playing good football fully appreciated by the watching spectators. A superb move started by Runcorn’s Holt involving McManus and Cairns ended when Evans goal bound shot was blocked by Crorken outstretched foot inside the penalty area. Then a tremendous volley from Holt struck Hodgkinson before rebounding to safety. As time began to run down for Barnoldswick, Melia’s cross was only just too high for Threlfall, the home team were pressing forward at every opportunity and Runcorn were forced to defend in depth. Rimmer blocked, James cleaned up loose balls and both 01.CONNOR KING 01.ANDY METCALF fuulbacks received extra help 02.LIAM BLADES 02 SHAUN DOWING from midfield, it was an impres03 JAMES CRORKEN 03 MICHAEAL CARBERRY sive defensive display to end 04 JAKE LLOYD

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END ANDY BYRNE We caught up with Barnoldswick Town Fan Andy Byrne, we found out what his expectations for his Barnoldswick Town after the 11th place finished. We also found out who he would pick if he could managed of a 5 a side team.

What are your expectations for the new season after your 11th place finished last season? To be more consistent, and push for the top 6 After your pre season what do you think u have a good enough team to challenge in the top half off the season? Definitely, we have a new manager with good ideas & all the players have bought into his ethos and the way he wants to play.

What has been your most memorable game you have seen at your time at Barnoldswick Town? Without a doubt the Cup semi final vs Bootle last season. Both legs were tight and could have gone either way but our keeper had 2 outstanding games and was definitely our player of the tie. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? The teams that we want to be challenging with for the top places.. would also be nice to reverse the Cup final defeat to City of Liverpool.. What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? Never been to Squires Gate but to be honest I just want to go to the grounds I'm yet to visit. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to gate? To be honest we have a great squad of players who work hard for each other. As for specific players, we have a few game changers but I wouldn't want to give away too much! Haha! What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last year? Both Runcorn sides are strong, Bootle are a good side too. But looking forward to meeting teams I've never seen at Barnoldswick before like Northwich Victoria Which players will be key for you this season? Like I said before we have a good squad so I think the key for Danny & the coaching staff will just be to keep as many as fit as possible so we have different options. If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Wow, that's a tough question. Deli Alli, a good, skillful, tough tackling midfielder who chips in with his share of goals. Coutinho.. genius with a ball at his feet. Sanchez.. same reason pure class Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? No, so looking forward to visiting this season.. and getting a result! If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Barnoldswick players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? Another toughie! From Barnoldswick, Harry Thompson.. tough, skilful midfielder. Zack Dale.. pacey winger. BPL legends.. Steven Gerrard.. best midfielder, brilliant captain, Alan Shearer.. awesome striker, Thierry Henry.. Pure class. Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Yes a few times. Barnoldswick in the FA Cup final! Hahah! Finally where do u predict your finish this year and do you think it be better than last years? Yea, I think realistically to improve on last year, so top 10 definitely maybe even top 6 and I think with the group of players we have, it's totally achievable.

NWCFL NEWSLETTER The top two teams in each division are the only clubs left with 100% League records, after an eventful weekend of action. In the Premier Division, Charnock Richard’s unblemished record at the top of the table remained intact by virtue of them having no game, and they have been joined at the top by Runcorn Town, who won 1-0 at Barnoldswick Town courtesy of a goal – almost inevitably – from leading scorer Craig Cairns. Tucked in behind the top two are six teams all on seven points, with Runcorn Linnets leading the pack on goal difference, helped largely by a 5-0 win over Winsford United on Friday evening, in which Callum Lucy and Stuart Wellstead both scored twice. Also in the pack are Hanley Town, who were 2-0 and 3-2 down at Bootle, but eventually won a thriller 4-3 thanks to Jonathan Sheldon’s goal 15 minutes from time. West Didsbury & Chorlton’s Tom Bailey continued his good start to the season with two goals in their 3-0 win at Congleton Town, and 1874 Northwich kept up their recent good form with a 2-0 home win over Padiham, thanks to goals from Scott McGowan and Kyle Riley. After scoring eight in their midweek FA Cup tie, City of Liverpool’s firepower was in evidence again at Maine Road, where they eventually won 5-0 after having established a four goal lead inside 35 minutes. Jamie McDonald grabbed a double for the Purples in the opening nine minutes. AFC Liverpool also won 5-0, with Daniel Boden scoring twice in the home win over Barnton, and two own goals helped Irlam on the way to a 4-0 home win over Squires Gate. Goals in each half from George Noon and Benito Lowe earned Abbey Hey a 2-0 win at Northwich Victoria, and two goals in the last 20 minutes from Dale KorieButler ensured Ashton Athletic picked up a point from a 2-2 draw at Widnes. The other game in the division between AFC Darwen and Burscough ended goalless.

At the top of the First Division, Whitchurch Alport and Silsden continue to set the pace, with both racking up their fourth successive league wins. It’s Alport who top the table on goal difference after a 4-1 win at AFC Blackpool, although the points were only secured once Mike Blundell and Ben Mills made the game safe with goals in the final 15 minutes. Meanwhile, a winner from Arley Barnes in the 83rd minute earned Silsden a 2-1 hoem victory over Alsager Town. Prestwich Heys are in third place and scored five goals at home for the second week in a row, this time winning 5-0 against Holker Old Boys. Rio Wilson-Heyes grabbed a double for the men in red. Bacup Borough sit in fourth place after a second half equaliser from Matthew Bryan earned them a point from a 1-1 draw at Carlisle City, and Litherland REMYCA are fifth after losing their 100% record by being held to a 3-3 draw at home to Chadderton. Lennon Whewell’s hat trick had put Remy 3-1 up early in the second half, but an equaliser from Thomas Hughes earned a point for Chaddy. The first ever Hallmark Security League fixture held at Birches Head Road in Abbey Hulton proved to be a memorable one, with Abbey Hulton United coming from two goals down to lead Stockport Town 3-2 with only five minutes remaining, but an equaliser from Tyler Edwards earned Town a 3-3 draw There were also late deciding goals in a number of other games. At Church Lane, Dennis Sherriff struck an 89th minute equaliser to earn New Mills a 2-2 draw at home to Nelson, and at New Sirs where Ryan Brooke’s second goal of the afternoon in the 88th minute secured a 2-1 for Sandbach United over Daisy Hill. Likewise, Eccleshall’s 3-2 over St Helens Town was decided by an 85th minute winner from Elliot Booth. Elsewhere, two goals from Cheadle Town’s Richard Whyatt set his side on the way to a 3-2 win at FC Oswestry Town, a result that sees the Shropshire men rooted to the bottom of the table, and Ryan Mellor’s 67th minute strike was decisive in Atherton LR’s 2-1 win over Cammell Laird 1907 at Crilly Park. FAMOUS OPENING DAY WEEKEND RESULTS... As the new Premier League season into the 3rd week , we take a look back at some famous opening day results. 7 years on from Blackpool’s Premier League campaign and that win at the DW Stadium.

Wednesday were a different side in the second half and drew level. But Spurs five pronged attack sprung back into life with goals from Nick Barmby and Klinsmann. Both sides had safe seasons, finishing 13th and 7th.

2008/09 summer of whispering doubt, silenced. Arsenal started this season apparently clutching desperately to their place at the Premier League’s top table, hoping against hope for a future that may never arrive. Within 41 minutes, it was evident rumours of their demise had been greatly exaggerated. Fighting for fourth? Threatened by the Eastlands oil billions? A club crippled by the forlorn hope of its stubborn manager? Arsène is easy to get carried away at this time of the year. It is in mid-August when bold predictions are made. Yet it is no exaggeration to say that none of Manchesters United and City, Chelsea or Liverpool will come to Goodison Park and demolish Everton in as imperious a fashion as Arsene Wenger’s side.

2010/11 Blackpool were surprisingly promoted last season thanks to a Brett Ormerod winner in their play-off final against Cardiff and the striker should have scored in the opening minutes at the DW stadium. However, he failed to make contact with a low TaylorFletcher cross from the right and again swiped without success when David Vaughan played the ball back from the left flank. Blackpool also went close when a nod back from a corner found debutant Harewood, who could not get over the ball enough and headed over.

status of the two clubs on the national stage having taken two, completely different paths over the past decade. It wasn't always that way however, and to give Sky Blues fans hope of an upset this weekend, Vital Coventry is looking back at some notable wins over the West Londoners.

TUESDAY 27TH SEPETMBER 2016

Gate were boosted before the game by the return of top scorer Ric Seear from injury, he started up front with in from striker Make Buchan who had scored five goals in three games. Gate dominated a lot of the first half testing the visitors keeper several times but just couldn't find the key shot to give them the lead. Gate early chances from a Freekick only just cleared by the visitors before Ryan Stayte rushed his shot and missed the ball. Mark Buchan could have then put Gate ahead on 14 minutes but his header from a lovely Richards cross, fell wide of the post. The visitors had a couple of their own half chances but Gate did well to block several shots before a corner was taken short and fired just wide. Gate ended the half with two good chances. First Paul Carroll fired over from the edge of the box after a clearance came to him. Then Ryan Riley narrowly fired over the bar from a Freekick just outside the box. The second was a complete contrast from the first. The visitors would take the lead after two minutes. Harry Thompson weaving his way through the defence unchallenged to slot past Speight and give them the lead. Five minutes into the second half and they'd strike again. Carroll conceding what looked to be a soft foul outside of the box. Andy Hill stepped up and scored the Freekick to Speights right. After the game manager Danny Penswick described it as a 20 minute spell of madness as Gate would concede again. After being on top for so long in the first half Barlick would score again on 72 minutes. A weak back pass was seized upon by striker Mark Threlfall who broke clear and slotted past Speight. Clearly this sparked something in Gate who returned to what we saw in the first half. Returning striker Ric Seear would be the hero with two superb individual goals. The first came when a ball forward was taken down by Seear. He battled past a defender before chipping the ball over the keeper into the far corner. Two minutes later Seear would do it again. This time straight down the middle. The ball found Seear who saw the keeper rushing off his line and chipped him to give Gate a glimmer of hope late on. But despite two late chances for Gate from corners, the first featuring a superb low save from the keeper, Gate couldn't find another goal.

TUESDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2016

Gate made the best start possible when after just four minutes they opened the scoring. Striker Ric Seear sent through down the left hand side burst into the box unchallenged and fired low past the keeper. What followed was a fairly quiet 10 minutes with both sides seemingly cancelling each other out, though the homeside did have more of the possession. Gate manager Danny Penswick made some Tactics changes bringing another man back into midfield and it seemed to do the trick. Ben Seear had the chance to grab a goal of his own after 19 minutes. A dodgy clearence by the keeper fell to his feet but he was closed down before he could shoot. Brett Dawson could have grabbed a goal on 29 minutes but he couldn't be found in the middle. Ric Seear sent down the wing but his cross into Dawson was blocked. Dawson would get his chance and grab Gate a second. Brett Dawson burst into the box down the middle and was hacked down. Dawson stepped up and Cooley slotted the penalty away. Gate were almost in on goal again as the half came to a close. A Barnoldswick corner was flashed across goal and cleared into the path of Ric Seear. Seear burst forward down the wing but was tackled before he could send Dawson through. Gate would grab a third goal on 51 minutes. Great perfectly timed through ball found the run of Ric Seear. He calmly finished past the keeper for his second of the game. The homeside looked more of a threat in the second half. Paul Alexander had to be aware of what was around him on 60 minutes as he headed behind with attackers behind him. The homeside would grab a goal back on 63 minutes. The left back cut inside before guiding a shot right into the top corner. Barnoldswick then had two chances in quick succession to add another. First a shot came in from outside the box which Ben Fletcher tipped over. Then a corner came in and found a Barnoldswick man at the back post but he fired over from nearly under the bar. It would be a perfect day for Ric Seear who bagged his Hatrick on 90 minutes. A perfect way to celebrate his birthday. Noblet sending a perfectly timed ball down the line found Seear who steamed into the box. He tricked and turned his way through the defence before easily slotting the ball past the keeper. The homeside would then grab another goal. The striker getting the faintest of touches to head the ball past Fletcher.

Q&A WITH‌ NICK GREENALL In a new regular feature, we interview Gate Midfielder Nick Greenall. Nick joined Gate at the start of this season for locals side Blackpool Wrens Rover, Nick was one off the Top scorer for wrens last season and I don’t think he have any problems banging in some gate this year. We asked him which team he be looking forward to facing, we what teams are you looking forward to facing this season? AFC Liverpool and Runcorn Linnets, always enjoy playing against the bigger teams

Which teams do you think will be tought season? I think all the teams we come up against in this league will be tough but again the 2 mentioned shoved

What encouraged you to start playing football? Who was your footballing idol as a kid? I'll get slated for this but my footballing idol was my dad and obviously he is the one that got me into playing football If you weren't a midfielder, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time? I'd love to be a striker as they get all the headlines when they score and I used to play there as a kid

If you could pick one BPL team for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why? I'd have to say Manchester United as it's the team I support

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? Used to go and watch my dad every week but the first game I went to with him was Manchester United v Everton at old trafford Favourite ground you have ever played at? The new Wembley (in a national 5 a side tournament)

As this is your first season at Gate after long time in league blow with wrens, what are your expectations for yourself for the season and why did decide to step up? I felt like I'd done and won everything I could of there and with knowing a few of the lads and Danny asking me to come down I thought why not

What is your goal target for the season ? I'd like to get into double figures again

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with, Who would you pick and why? I'd go with Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Vidic...probably the best defence in the league at the time and premier league greats

What the first thing you do before any match? Talk myself through what im going to do in the game

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Take 2 pro plus and a can of red bull

Being a new players at the club have the old players welcomed you to the club? Like I said I knew a couple of lads here anyway but in regards to the other lads they've all been great

Prediction for today's game? It's been a tough start to the season for us but I'm going to go with a 2-1 win

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week

IT’S LIKE THE SEVENTIES ALL OVER AGAIN

2009

On 25 August 2009, violence marred a match between West Ham and Millwall in their first meeting for over four years. Separated by only five miles and the River Thames, the two London teams have a longstanding rivalry that dates back to their first meeting in 1897 (when West Ham were still known as Thames Ironworks). Their respective supporter groups have a history of clashes, including an outbreak of fighting at the 1972 testimonial for Harry Cripps, who had played for both teams, and a 1976 clash at New Cross Station that resulted in the death of Millwall supporter Ian Pratt, who fell under a train. Before the 2009 meeting, the two teams had last played each other in April 2004, the sixth match in an unbeaten run for Millwall that stretched back to November 1992. Then the League Cup paired them for a second-round meeting at West Ham's Upton Park. Neil Harris gave the visitors a 26th-minute lead, which they held for most of the match. But West Ham's Junior Stanislas equalized in the 87th minute, sending the home supporters into a frenzy and sparking a pitch invasion. In extra time, Stanislas scored again, this time from the penalty spot in the 98th minute, resulting in another invasion. Zavon Hines added a third for West Ham in the 100th minute to set the final margin at 3-1. Fighting broke out both inside and outside the stadium, with at least twenty people getting injured and a 44-year old Millwall fan going to the hospital with a stab wound. Supporters clashed with each other and the police clashed for several hours, resulting in several arrests. Afterward, the Football Association found West Ham guilty of failing to restrain their supporters

and fined the club £115,000

VASCO DA GAMA DISCOVERS THE PATH TO GLORY

1998

On 26 August 1998, Vasco da Gama won the Copa Libertadores, beating Barcelona SC 1-2 in the final's second leg. The two teams qualified for the competition by winning their domestic leagues--Brazil for Vasco and Ecuador for Barcelona--in 1997. Vasco had a more difficult road to the final, beating defending champions Cruzeiro in the Round of 16, then overcoming Grêmio and River Plate in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Barcelona, meanwhile, advanced over Colo-Colo, Bolívar, and Cerro Porteño. The final was played over two legs, home and away, with the winner determined by points. Vasco won the first leg, played at the Estádio São Januário in Rio on 12 August, by the score of 2-0 with goals from their forward pairing of Donizete and Luizáo ( In the second leg, played two weeks later at Barcelona's Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil, Vasco again went up by two at the break, with the same two players providing the goals, Luizáo striking in the 24th minute and Donizete in the 45th. Barcelona halved the margin to one with a 79th-minute goal from forward Antony de Ávila, but they could get no closer, even after Donizete received a 93rd-minute red card to reduce Vasco to ten men. It was Vasco's first appearance in the Copa Libertadores final, while Barcelona had been there once before, finishing as runners-up to Olimpia in 1990. Neither team has returned since

THE CAPTIAN OF THE KOP On 28 August 1947, Liverpool and England captain Emlyn Hughes was born in Lancashire. He went on to win four league titles and two European Cups while being named England's Footballer of the Year in 1977. Hughes started his professional career with Blackpool in 1964, but made only 28 league appearances there before moving to Anfield in 1967 for a transfer fee of £65,000. Although Liverpool had won the league title in 1966, they went without silverware in Hughes' first four seasons. They returned to their winning ways in the 1972-73 season, winning both the league and the UEFA Cup. Hughes took over as skipper and more honors followed, including three more league titles (1976, 1977, 1979), another UEFA Cup (1976), back-to-back European Cups (1977, 1978) and an FA Cup (1974). In the meantime, he made 60 appearances for England, wearing the armband for several games in 1974. In 1977, Liverpool narrowly missed out on a treble, losing to Manchester United in the FA Cup final. Later that year, Hughes became the second consecutive Liverpool player (and third in four years) to win the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year Award. He left Liverpool in 1979 and spent time with Wolves, Rotherham (as player-manager), Hull City, Mansfield Town, and Swansea City before retiring in 1984. He died of cancer in 2004 at the age of 57

GATE NEWS NEW CHAIRMAN AND COMMITTEE SIGNALS NEW ERA AT GATE As many will have seen at the back end of last season, chairman Stuart Hopwood stepped down from the club as Chairman after 10 years in the role.
