FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK Good afternoon everyone,

Today we welcome Barnton to the Royal British Legion Stadium in what is the first ever meeting between the two sides. Without knowing too much about them, their fellow promoted sides look physically strong so I will be expecting a similar encounter this afternoon. Recent results haven’t been great but we know that there are no easy games in this division.

“There are no easy games in this division.”

With a near fully fit squad to choose from, competition for places is high and I’m hoping the lads in charge of the shirts make it impossible for me to change. The hunger we showed on Tuesday night was pleasing and reminded me of how we started the season. In recent weeks our performance levels have been all over the place and I’m looking for more and more consistency from the lads every week.

“The hunger we showed on Tuesday night was pleasing”

Patience is going to be a key message today as too often this season, we have attempted to do too much too soon and left ourselves exposed defensively. I’m hoping we can strike the right balance been attack and over commitment. The lads have been showing big signs of improvement every week and are getting very organised so it is all work in progress.

Let’s hope today’s game is a cracker. We have scored a lot of goals at home this campaign and luckily we have been on the right side of results. I would like to wish the Barnton fans a safe journey home.

Up the Gate.

Danny

Gate started the game by giving away a foul from kick off. Luckily for Gate the striker fired wide when the ball fell to his feet, a warning sign for Gate. Ben Seear jinked his way down the left hand side and into the box but took a touch too many as Gate got into the game after five minutes.

He then turned provider on nine minutes. A great cross in by Seear found his brother, but he could only head into the keepers knees, who saved. As the first half went on, neither side really looked to commit too many men forward a result of that meant the game became flat. Gate had a couple of half chances through a Ben Seearheader that fell wide. Danny Penswick then did well to kind Seear out on the wing but nobody could meet his cross in. New Mills made the better start to the second half and took the lead after 50 minutes. A lovely Freekick from the edge of the box beat Fletcher to his right hand side. New Mills could have been 2-0 up a minute later but luckily their shot hit the post. Then 15 minutes later they could have score again. The New Mills attacker doing well to get past two defenders but his cut back was fired straight at the keeper, who saved well. As the second half came to a close Gate introduced Ryan Riley and Mark Buchan but neither strikers could really have the desired effect. Buchan did fire in a superb cross for Ric Seear but the New Mills defender did well to clear the ball first. Report by Mark Ashmore.

Squires Gate stopped their loosing steak with a hard fought win away at West Didsbury on Tuesday night. Gate had this first chance of the game after 30 seconds. A Freekick won just outside of the box but was fired over by Brett Dawson. The homeside would have their first chance of the game after five minutes but they headed wide from the flicked on throw in. Dawson would make up for his early miss by putting Gate ahead after 11 minutes. He reacted quickly to latch onto a weak back pass to the keeper. He took the ball away from him and tapped into an empty net. After the goal came abit of a stalemate between the two teams with both cancelling each other out and neither really threatening. West did well to defend several Gate shots on 30 minutes with several player throwing their bodies at the shots. West could have equalised on 34 minutes when the striker was sent through with a long ball. He strode into the box but chose to shoot from the right angle rather than cut the ball back into the box. Gate would grab a second goal two minutes before half time. Great pressing from Gate's attack around West's penalty box leading to a mistake. First Dawson then Tanser pressed but it was Jamie Gibson who nicked the ball back and fired past the keeper. The homeside would grab a goal back on 56 minutes. A long throw into the box found West's number 5 who headed past Fletcher.

Gate's plans were rocked coming into the game with no recognised keeper available, defender Ben Seeardeputised in goal. The homeside would make a good start to the game and took the lead after nine minutes. A freekick into the back post was knocked down into the six yard box and scrambled in by Daniel Cope. To say the game was slowed down by the ref would be an understatement. Both teams kept conceding things that wouldnt even be a foul in other games leading to lots of freekicks in the first half. Luckily, either team couldn't make the most of the freekicks throughout the game. Hanley Town could have added a second after 24 minutes. A long goal kick got in behind Gate but Ben Seear did well to to tip the shot over. Two minutes later though and Hanley would grab a second. The ball sent through the middle found Cope. Ben Seear in net did well to stop the ball but couldn't keep hold of it allowing Sean Mountfold an easy tap in. Gate would grab a goal of their own on 30 minutes. Mark Thornber playing a lovely ball down the wing to Brett Dawson who burst into the box with pace to delicately chip the ball over the keeper. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't build any momentum from the goal before half time to get a second. The homeside grabbed themselves a third goal just two minutes into the second half. A lovely bit of movement down the right found Cope in the middle unmarked and with Gate standing off him he fired home for his second of the game. The homeside were then awarded a penalty on 62 minutes for what looked like handball by Paul Alexander. Stand in keeper Ben Seear would produce a moment he'd never forget when he dived the right way to his right to pull off a superb save that any keeper would be proud of. After one Seear's good work down one end Gate almost grabbed a goal back down the other through Ric. He reached Paul Alexander's cross in but just headed wide. Gate introduced Ryan Riley who had an instant impact on 80 minutes. He drove forward from midfield unchallenged and found Dawson but his cross was ruled to have crossed the line and gone out. The homeside were then reduced to 10 men. A straight red card for a kick out. Gate would then make that man advantage pay when they grabbed another goal back. Sub Mark Buchan cutting back inside and crossing to the back post to find Ric Seear who powered a header in. Gate would then concede late on. A poor clearance by the otherwise faultless Ben Seear fell straight to their midfielder who passed the ball into Cope's feet for him to score his hatrick.

Gate welcomed back keeper Ben Fletcher with Ben Seear returning to a more familiar midfield role. Gate made the best start possible when after just four minutes they opened the scoring. Striker Ric Seear sent through down the left hand side burst into the box unchallenged and fired low past the keeper. What followed was a fairly quiet 10 minutes with both sides seemingly cancelling each other out, though the homeside did have more of the possession. Gate manager Danny Penswick made some Tactics changes bringing another man back into midfield and it seemed to do the trick. Ben Seear had the chance to grab a goal of his own after 19 minutes. A dodgy clearence by the keeper fell to his feet but he was closed down before he could shoot. Brett Dawson could have grabbed a goal on 29 minutes but he couldn't be found in the middle. Ric Seear sent down the wing but his cross into Dawson was blocked. Dawson would get his chance and grab Gate a second. Brett Dawson burst into the box down the middle and was hacked down. Dawson stepped up and Cooley slotted the penalty away. Gate were almost in on goal again as the half came to a close. A Barnoldswick corner was flashed across goal and cleared into the path of Ric Seear. Seear burst forward down the wing but was tackled before he could send Dawson through. Gate would grab a third goal on 51 minutes. Great perfectly timed through ball found the run of Ric Seear. He calmly finished past the keeper for his second of the game. The homeside looked more of a threat in the second half. Paul Alexander had to be aware of what was around him on 60 minutes as he headed behind with attackers behind him. The homeside would grab a goal back on 63 minutes. The left back cut inside before guiding a shot right into the top corner. Barnoldswick then had two chances in quick succession to add another. First a shot came in from outside the box which Ben Fletcher tipped over. Then a corner came in and found a Barnoldswick man at the back post but he fired over from nearly under the bar. It would be a perfect day for Ric Seear who bagged his Hatrick on 90 minutes. A perfect way to celebrate his birthday. Noblet sending a perfectly timed ball down the line found Seear who steamed into the box. He tricked and turned his way through the defence before easily slotting the ball past the keeper. The homeside would then grab another goal. The striker getting the faintest of touches to head the ball past Fletcher.

The pinnacle of the club's success came with winning the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003–04. They beat West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2–0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition. The club also participated in the FA Cup on two occasions (1948–49 and 1949–50) and the FA Vase in 1985–86, although they failed to progress further than the extra preliminary round on each occasion. The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties Football League for the start of the 2014–15 season. They were successful in their application and their place in the newly formed Division One was confirmed on 29 May. A few days later, Andy Burgess was appointed as the club's new manager, with Ian Ross stepping down to concentrate on his role as chairman. However, Burgess left the club by mutual consent in November and forward Colin Quirk was placed in temporary charge. Within a week Allan Glover was appointed as the new manager, but he was succeeded by Leon Knight in March 2015. The club finished seventh in their inaugural season in the North West Counties Football League, just outside the Division One Play-Off places.

During Barnton’s second season in the First Division, the club accepted Leon Knight’s resignation as manager in early March, and appointed Danny Meadowcroft as interim manager until the end of the season. The team then went on to lift the Reusch First Division Cup and also gained promotion to the North West Counties League Premier Division by beating Bacup Borough in the Division One Play -Off Final. The club then said goodbye to Ian Ross who stepped down as Barnton chairman after four years, and the management team also moved on to pastures new. In May 2016, Steve Lloyd and Mike Alcock took over as the new management team of Barnton FC, and Tim Burton took over as the new chairman.

LAST TIME OUT

BARNTON 1 PADIHAM 6 SATURDAY 8TH OCTOBER 2016 / THE HINCHLIFFE HOLMES STADIUM / PREMIER DIVSION Padiham went on what can only be described as a goal rampage on Saturday smashing six past Hallmark Security North West Counties Football League Premier Division newcomers Barnton, making it a memorable first ever visit to the home side's Hinchliffe Holmes Stadium for the Storks and moving them up to 12th in the league table.

An 8th minute own goal by Barnton defender James McShane opened the floodgates and within 5 minutes of the restart the Storks went further ahead after a foul on Aaron Taylor resulted in an edge of the box free-kick which Alex Murphy despatched clinically to put Padiham two up.

Murphy made it 3-0 on 21 minutes with another spectacular strike after Kieron Pickup had pulled the ball back into his path and although Lee Vaughan gave Barnton something to celebrate on 29 minutes when he pulled a goal back for the home side, by half-time Padiham led 4-1 after Pickup restored the Storks' three goal advantage with a shot under Barnton keeper Matthew Conkie on 43 minutes. Padiham went close to adding to their goals tally on 54 minutes when Tom Bradley fired across the home side's goals and again on 56 minutes when Alex Murphy headed a Bradley cross just over Barnton's crossbar, however on the hour mark the Storks found the back of the Cheshire sides net for a fifth time when Aaron Taylor headed in a Pickup cross to make it 5-1. Alex Murphy completed his hat trick and scored the visitors' sixth goal of the afternoon on 64 minutes after a Taylor shot was only partially saved by Conkie and the Padiham striker followed up to turn in the loose ball. Aaron Taylor nearly added a seventh for the Storks on 75 minutes but this time the home side had a let off when his effort smashed against the cross bar.

What are your expectations for this season? What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on the last campaign? I think from an overall club perspective, trying to compare last season to this is about as night and day as you could get. The chariman, Rossi, finished his tenure on a high, finishing 3rd in the First Division, and gaining promotion to the Premier, and winning the Division One trophy on penalties. The off season came, and went, as did the chairman, the management team, and the vast majority of players. So for a new board, manager and a team built from scratch, all competing in a higher division any expectations were always going to be tempered with realism. After a good start, what do you expect for the rest of the season? We picked up a couple of wins early on, but a series of injuries, and a seemingly endless run of penalties conceded meant we couldn’t maintain the initial momentum, and currently find ourselves in the bottom 3. I think if Steve and the boys can keep a real sense of togetherness, and solidify at the back, the primary target should be to cement a place in the Premier Division for next year. What teams are you looking forward to going up against? Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? I’m born and bread Runcornian, and have only in the last couple of years moved to Barnton, so I’m looking forward to the fixtures against both Runcorn sides, Linnets and Town. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to Gate? Any players that Gate fans should watch out for? I’m not sure I should be divulging such information, but the player who is likely to be the biggest threat would be Lee Vaughan, his place is electric. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Barnton? Without a doubt that would have to be the play off final against Bacup last season, watched by a crowd of over 500 from the surrounding towns. Walking to the ground, there were cars abandoned everywhere, and a stream of people heading towards Townfield, it was like a scene from (a slightly less zombie) Walking Dead. Which players will be key for you this season? Lee Vaughan will trouble most defences with his blistering pace, we just need to pick the passes that allows him to get behind the back four more often. Sam Houghton shows drive and determination in the middle of the park, and is always one to try and encourage those around him. If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? I was initially going to go for a solid base with a couple of defensively minded players, however, to give us the best chances of progressing its more attacking flair, hopefully “free” covers wages too. Sergio Aguero, in the top 5 strikers in the world and adept at scoring with either foot, De Bruyne is blossoming into one of football’s greatest Gingers. It’s a well known fact that goals get you promoted, so with those two we should be in a position to win most games. But there are also times where a save is as important as a goal at the other end, so my final pick would be De Gea (sorry Conkie) Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? I was up near you guys, at the Zoo, last weekend, does that count? If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to pick 2 Barnton players and 3 PL legends. Who would be in your side? Peter Schmeichel, Jaap Stam, Paolo Di Canio, Sam Houghton, Chris Smith Have you ever been to Wembley before? What would be your ideal scenario there? I was at Wembley for the 1995 FA Cup final to watch Everton beat United to win their last silverware, and any scenario that sees them lifting another trophy after a rather long wait would be most welcomed. Prediction for today’s game? Score draw, put an end to the run of defeats, 2-2

OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks include former 1874 and Alsager goalkeeper Matt Conkie who as played every game so far this season for Barnton.

Danny Meadowcroft and Christopher Smith are also among the ones to watch with the latter scoring 10 goals in 19 games.

MATT CONKIE The former Alsager and 1874 Northwich goalkeeper has played every game so far for Barnton and will most likely continue that this weekend. Quick off his line and none to take a few risks, Conkie will be key to stopping the rot Barton are currently in, conceding 20 goals.

DANNY MEADOWCROFT

CHRISTOPHER SMITH

Recently rejoined Barnton but this time to play having been player/manager last season. Having played at a high level with the licks of Stockport County, Morecambe and Chester, Meadowcroft strengthens Barnton's backline and will offer more experience.

The forward leads the goal scoring charts for Barnton with 10 goals in 19 games. The former Alsager and Congleton forward will be a threat to Gate today and will need to be watched.

Steve has now been at Barnton for the second season after promoted from the first divisions last season Steve and his team will be hoping to matiain a place in the premier division this season Steve has brought in some new players from around the division. Steve will know this league is not easy and no game is easy In the league.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY…. In our regular feature, we take a look back at the past week in football history from all around the world.

DANISH DOZEN

1917

On 7th October 1917, Denmark whipped Norway in a friendly 12-0 despite starting the match a man down. The imbalance was caused by Danish Johannes Hansen, who - for reasons that remain unclear - chose to get a pre match haircut that delayed the opening whistle. The Norwegians agreed to the delay, but Swedish referee Ernst Albihn went ahead and started the match after learning that Hansen had arrived at the stadium in Copenhagen, even though he was not on the pitch.

As it turned out, it didn't make any difference. Even with the brief disadvantage in numbers, Denmark's Michael Rohde scored in only the 6th minute. At the half-hour mark, they were up 4-0 with a hat-trick from Rohde's club teammate, Victor Klein (both played for B 93). Rohde then scored another before the break to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The second half was even worse for Norway. They managed to avoid another goal until Paul Berth's 68th-minute strike, but then the dam burst as Kjøbenhavns Boldklub forward Poul Nielsen (pictured) rattled off five straight goals in a span of just over ten minutes (70', 74', 76', 78', 80'). A final score from Alf Olsen in the 83rd minute ended the barrage and set the final margin at 12-0.

2010

JAPAN 1 ARGENTINA 0

On 8 October 2010, Japan got their first win over Argentina, beating them 1-0 in a The match remains Norway's biggest defeat. friendly. It was the seventh meeting between the two teams.

It was Japan's first match under their new manager, Alberto Zaccheroni, who had just come off a 6-month term with Juventus. His pre-Japan career also included spells with a number of other Italian clubs, including Udinese (1995-98), Milan (1998 -2001), Lazio (2001-02), Inter (2003-04), and Torino (2006-07). Argentina, meanwhile, were playing their third match under interim manager Sergio Batista, who had replaced Diego Maradona after the 2010 World Cup. Argentina had won his two previous matches, over Ireland (1-0) and defending World Cup champions Spain (4-1).

The Albiceleste fielded a full-strength side for the match against Japan, played before a crowd of 60,000 at Saitama Stadium. But despite the presence of prolific scorers Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Diego Milito, it was Japan who struck first, going SO, THAT’S ONE BIG FISH AND ONE ONE up LITTLE 1-0 in the 19th minute with a goal from Shimizu S-Pulse winger Shinji Okazaki1999 (pictured, left), pounced theon ball Sergio Romero failed to On 10 October 1999, two players got their first caps forwho England, but on went to after very goalkeeper different international careers. hold on to it. The occasion was a friendly against Belgium, played at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. National team boss Kevin Keegan, then in his first year as manager, collected a team of veterans, including goalkeeper David Seaman, defender Tony Adams, and forward and captain Alan Shearer, each of whom had more than 50 England appearances at the time. But Keegan also included a couple of new faces in the midfield--West Ham's Frank Lampard and Leicester City's Stephen Guppy (pictured). Between the two, Guppy received the lion's share of pre-match attention, with one commentator calling him "one of the country's most gifted left-sided midfielders."

The 30-year old Guppy played all 90 minutes as England won 2-1 with goals from Shearer (6') and Jamie Redknapp (66') (Belgium's lone strike was scored by Branko Strupar (14')). Lampard, who was 21, gave way to Dennis Wise in the 76th minute. The match turned out to be Guppy's only appearance for the England senior side, while Lampard went on to earn a total of 106 caps.

LAST SEASON

RUNCORN LINNETS 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 The homeside started the game as Gate would have expected. They had plenty of early chances to get the ball forward quickly whilst Gate looked organised and kept the threat from Linnets to a minimum. Gates first chance of the game came after 13 minutes. Jake Higham did well down the left hand side and found the run of Tanser, but his shot was wide of the post. Linnets best chance of the half came after 21 minutes, striker Steve Jones curling the ball narrowly wide of the post from outside the box. Linnets again threatened Gates goal but a after a six yard box scramble, Gate finally managed to clear the ball. Linnets would open the scoring just before the half hour mark. Gate let down after switching off allowing Steve Jones to score from a corner, the striker not closed down quick enough. The goal a harsh one on a hard working Gate who didn't deserve to be 1-0 down at half time. Ryan Tanser had the chance to level for Gate after the break. He used his pace to drive at the Linnets defence and run clear. His shot was saved a spilled by Porter in net but Porter reacted quickest to collect the ball before Tanser could react. Perhaps the turning point in the game when the home side were awarded a penalty. Joe Noblet harshly penalised for using his arms to jump and head the ball away. But Gate would be saved when Linnets defender Michael White fired the ball over the bar from the spot! Soon after that Steve Jones tried his luck again, this time from outside the box. The striker firing over on the volley direct from the goal kick. Gate would again be left frustrated after the referee awarded another soft penalty. This time Josh Westwood was penalised for a trip after Ryan Cox turned around him. This time White would make no mistake and chose the opposite side to put Linnets 2-0 up. Gates best chance came on the hour mark. Billy McKenna with a golden chance after Josh Westwood burst forward fro defence. But McKenna was closed down quickly by Porter to deny the winger. Ben Fletcher did well to deny Ryan Cox on 75 minutes with a superb save despite Cox being flagged offside. Billy McKenna again had a superb chance to get a goal back for Gate. Jake Higham did well to win the ball back on the edge of Linnet's box and play through McKenna. He was one on one but caved under the pres-
