Thursday 30th November 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 39 This second-round tie went ahead at the second attempt and the first half never warmed up in the icy wind. Burscough, who are five places below Gate in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and one point above the relegation zone, took the lead through Whyte 11 minutes after the break.

In an end-to-end contest, Burscough grabbed the winner eight minutes from time with Whyte’s far-post header after Gate were caught on the break. The home side piled forward, including goalkeeper Ben Fletcher, but couldn’t force an equaliser, substitute Jack Williams rounding the keeper only to see his effort cleared off the line.

Gate drew level from a corner just a minute later, Mark Buchan controlling the Reported by Albert Cooper ball with his chest on the edge of the area and giving the keeper no chance. Half Time Squires Gate 1-1 Burscough

MILLINGTON 70 Saturday 2nd December 2017 // TDP Solicitors Stadium // Attendance: 71 This was Gate's third straight defeat but manager Manager Clarkson felt the goal was rather unAndy Clarkson was proud of his sides efforts at fortunate on his side - a 25 yard strike through high-flying Bootle. a crowd of players which took a horrible bounce over keeper Ben Fletcher. Fewer than 48 hours after facing Burscough in the Macron Cup, Gate more than held there own in the first half of this Hallmark Security Premier Division Contest. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomes Gary Pett back to the starting 11 after he missed the last two league games due to a holiday and gave a first start to Jordan O'Mahoney under his tenure who replaced the unavailable Lewis Masters. Although the hosts had most the possession and territory in the second half, it took one strike in the 70th minute to seperate the teams.

Clarkson introduced a third striker for the final 20 minutes but his side struggled to create any clear-cut chances and now stand 15th in the table. Clarkson told Blackpool Gazette after the game: "My lads dug in and gave it their all, and I think the goal was against the run of play. We had the play on the counter-attack but Bootle are definitely a top-six side and as long as we finish with four teams below us, this season we will have done our job."

THE BOSS

STEVE LLOYD Steve been at Barnton for some time now and have had some lows and high one of his high is guiding Barnton to NWCFL division one promotion plus there poor start to this season.

Steve and his team this season hasn't done to well at the start but that wont put them down and will be hoping to turn it away but know gate are no walk over as they found last season when there played for a 0-0 draw away from home last year.

BREIF HISTORY Barnton Football Club was founded in 1946 and in 1948 they became a founder member of the Mid-Cheshire League. They have played in that league ever since and are one of two clubs to have been in this league throughout its 68 year history, the other being Knutsford (the league was renamed the Cheshire Association Football League in 2007). As of the mid-2000s the club has won the league on eleven occasions, including seven consecutive league titles between 1996/97 and 2002/03. The pinnacle of the club's success came with the winning of the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003/04, beating West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2-0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition. The club has also participated in the FA Cup on two occasions (1948/49 and 1949/50) and the FA Vase on one occasion (1985/86) failing to get past their extra preliminary round games on each occasion. The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties League for the start of the 2014-15 season. They were successful in their application and were confirmed to take their place in the First Division on May 29th 2014. At the 2013/14 annual awards The Cheshire League presented Barnton a trophy to commemorate their 66 years in the league and wished every success in the N.W.C.F.L. On 1st June it was announced that Andy Burgess was their new manager with Ian Ross stepping down to concentrate on his role as Chairman.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

NIALL OWENS

This week we interviewed Barnton Media man Niall Owen, We found out what his expectation is for the new season , what fans didn't know about Barnton. We also found out what has his most memorable moment has been at Barnton. What are your expectations for the new season after last season 17th finished last year?

Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Ben Fletcher - he's a top keeper and at any level of football that is massive.

Fans from other club don't know that Barnton?

Simply to stay up, we've improved the squad a great deal especially going forward and this is reflected in the amount of goals we've scored. We know defensively as a Barnton was known as Jam Town in the 1800s as many people owned their houses whole the team needs to improve if we are to stand any chance of staying up. rather than renting. The quote was "People in Barnton eat Jam butties so that they can own not only their own houses, but buy their neighbours too!"

This season will been different to last because?

As a club we are more experienced at this level and know what to expect last season was special but we know if we can survive it will be an even greater achievement.

What has been your most memorable moment of all time at Barnton?

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? I'd go with Mo Salah, and Mane as they would provide some quality into Chris Smith to feed on and my third player would be Jordan Henderson as I know our gaffer isn't his biggest fan so I'd love to see him manage him.

Easily staying up last season, it was a similar case to this season where we were cut adrift but we managed to pull off an incredible run of results and in the end stayed Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? up with ease. We managed to win 2-0 in our visit last season, that was the start of a huge turnaWhat teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? round in form for us and really kick started out season. It's always a good challenge to play against the top teams, but we've got a number If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Barnton players and of local derbies but the one that stands out is Northwich Victoria and especially as 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? we will be hosting them on Boxing Day.

Chris Smith and Ryan Malone from Barnton In goal I'd have Peter Cech - as he's one of the best ever keepersXabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard would make up the rest of Northwich Victoria - we don't have to do much on the day and we will be at home! the team as they are one of the best midfield pairings of all time. In all seriousness it's always great to see how clubs at this level have stepped up the standard of their grounds and as always visiting the promoted sides like Char- Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? nock Richard, Widnes and City of Liverpool will be great

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season?

If you could change one thing about your club what would it be and why?

I've been to see a few NFL games there as I'm a huge fan, but if we could get there in the Fa Vase that would be brilliant as it's a wonderful competition and showcases the very best of non league.

If we could get a few more fans in especially from the Village that would be fantasYour most Barnton underrated player is? tic, as a club we've made inroads with the local community and will have a full youth structure in place for the 2018/19 season. We know that fans at this level Sam Houghton - if he plays well Barnton plays well are the life blood of the club and we appreciate the local following we've got and Gate should keep eye out on what player from Barton? we know in time this will continue to grow. Chris Bandell - after a tough season last year with injury he's now fully fit and is a key What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played part of the team and chips in with goals and assists.

well last season?

The best away fan are?

Runcorn Linnets are a great side and I expect to see them battling for promotion the entire set up there is fantastic.

I'd say the parents of the players, they are always there supporting us regardless of the trip.

Prediction for today game? Squires Gate 2-3 Barnton - hopefully this will be the result that kick starts the season for us.

WE’VE MET BEFORE SQUIRES GATE

Saturday 15th October 2016

Gate made a good start to the game looking good going forward though they struggled to find the finals pass from midfield into the front two. They couldn't make the pressure count on five minutes when after some good passing play around the box, Andrew Richards fired wide. Barnton had their first chance of the game after 10 minutes. But keeper Ben Fletcher was more then equal to the shot and easily saved.Down the other end striker Brett Dawson did well to control a ball over the top before playing in Ric Seear. Seear was found in the box but was crowded out by three Barnton defenders. Dawson was then involved again two minutes later when he played through Ben Seear, but Matt Conkie in goal was again equal to keep Gate out. Matt Conkie again kept Gate at bay on 20 minutes when he cam out and caught the ball from the corner. He then saved well with his feet coming off his line to beat Dawson to the ball. It's fair to see why Barnton goalkeeper Matt Conkie got Man of The Match for his side today particularly in the first half. Gate had several chances that, in recent weeks, they would have put away and have been going into half time in the lead. That wouldn't be the case though as it would be Barnton who went into half time with the lead. A ball through the middle found striker Chris Smith, who took a touch and lifted the ball over the on rushing Fletcher and into the net. The first half momentum that Gate delivered and maintained throughout the half seemed to have been sapped by the late goal in the first half. Though Gate had their chances and the visitors perhaps sat back Gate really couldn't find that spark of recent games. Mark Thornber picking the ball up short from the corner on 64 minutes but his cross in was too heavy and floated out for a goal kick. 10 minutes later Seydou Bamba sent a ball into the box that found the head of Ric Seear. But unfortunately Seear couldn't add to his 15 goal tally for the season as his header flew over the bar. Brett Dawson then had probably Gates best chance of the second half. Ryan Riley playing a lovely cross field pass to find Dawson at the edge of the box. He jinked past his man before firing into the side netting from a tight angle. The visitors would seal their three points and a perfect day for them in the 84th minute. Jonathan Jones chipping the ball over Fletcher after he came out to close the angle.

BARNTON SQUIRES GATE

0 0

Saturday 18th February 2017

It certainly wasn't a classic but it was perhaps what Gate needed after three defeats on the bounce. Winger Charlie Waters could have made the perfect start to his Squires Gate career on 10 minutes when he fired a great chance wide. Manager Danny Penswick played a lovely through ball behind the full back to find Waters, but his first time shot was fired wide of the post. The homeside then had two chances, first Chris Smith headed wide at the back post from a corner, then Jason McShane fired wide from a long way out. Manager Danny Penswick then fired wide to end what was a good spell of possession from Gate around Barnton's area. Joe Noblet then fired over at a second attempt after Charlie Waters was fouled after a mazy run. Down the other end the home side saw a goal ruled out for offside on 24 minutes. The ball cut back from the goal line into the six yard box and fired in but the player that passed it was judged to be offside. The second half became more of a scrappy affair with only one team looking likely to win the game. Charlie Waters again came close to opening his account for the club on 59 minutes. Paul Carroll's throw in was headed down by Seydou Bamba to find the winger, but his shot was fired over the bar. As the clock ticked on the game became more stretched with Gate looking to score a late winner. Charlie Waters was again involved when he latched onto a lovely through ball from Paul Carroll but his shot was blocked and cleared. Ten minutes later Waters found the run of sub Dawson whose shot rebounded into the patch of Seydou Bamba, but he couldn't adjust quick enough to shoot. Dawson and Bamba again linked up three minutes later, but the latter headed wide from Dawson's cross in. The late chances wouldn't end there for Gate with two in the last minute. First manager Danny Penswick could have won it but his shot from inside the box was blocked and cleared at the second attempt. The moments later Brett Dawson crossed the ball in from the goal line to find the head of Seydou Bamba but he couldn't keep his header down and fired over the bar. After the game manager Danny Penswick explained that there's no such thing as a bad point: "I thought we played much better and were unlucky not to win it second half. We're happy to come away with something and after three defeats on the trot, stop that trend. We looked the more dangerous team without creating too many clear cut chances and could and should have won it late on.

ON THE ROAD

RUNCORN TOWN 16.12.17 WHO’S IN CHARGE? Chris Herbert

GROUND? The Pavilions Postcode: WA7 4ET

LAST TIME OUT? RUNCORN TOWN 1 SQUIRES GATE 1 was Town that had the first chance of the game when former Gate striker Isaac Kusaloka took aim from distance but fired straight into Griffiths arms. Just a minute later though it was Gate who had a chance of their own. Brett Dawson picking the ball up deep played a lovely ball into the path of both Ben Seear and Jake Higham but neither could finish. Leading goal scorer Craig Cairns then had a great chance after striker partner Kusaloka pulled the ball back to him at the edge of the box, but he fired well over the bar. Again Gate replied with a good chance of their own but again couldn't capitalise. Bamba passing the ball into the feet of Ben Seear, Seear flicked the ball up then fired towards goal but the shot went straight into the keepers arms. Gate then had probably their best chance of the first half on 30 minutes. Thornber flicking the ball into Richards, he headed onto Brett Dawson but the strikers thunderous strike was fired wide. The turning point would come on 42 minutes when the homeside were awarded a penalty. Manager Danny Penswick judged to have bought down striker Craig Cairns in the box though the decision looked soft. Cairns stepped up to convert the penalty and give Runcorn the half time lead. The second half saw Gate dominate most of the half after a good first 10 minutes for the home side. Gate could have equalised on 65 minutes, Town clearing the ball off the line from a Gate corner. Before that striker Brett Dawson was unlucky to see his effort saved. Gate then had another chance this time from a freekick, but that was headed wide at the back post. Gate then forced Town’s keeper into a great save to keep them in the game. Dave Rossall sent a lovely ball forward to find Seydou Bamba, but Bamba’s shot is pushed clear by the keeper. Bamba had a second chance from Mike Hall’s cross back into the box but he just couldn’t stretch far enough to meet the ball. All Gate’s hard work would be rewarded with six minutes left to play. Like at title contenders Atherton Colls earlier in the season Gate would work their socks off and get a deserved equaliser. Jake Higham firing a thunderous strike which cannoned off the post into the path of Brett Dawson to tap in. It’s a win which keeps Gate in midfield but shows what Penswick team can do, with just Runcorn Linnets the only team in the top five, Gate haven’t picked up points against.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

SOCRATES PASSES AWAY

2011

On 4 December 2011, former Brazil captain Socrates passed away from complications related to food poisoning. He was 57. One of the most inventive and dynamic players of his generation, the towering midfielder started his career with Botafogo in 1974. But spent the majority of it with Corinthians, for whom he made 297 league appearances and scored 172 goals between 1978 and 1984 and won three league titles (1979, 1982, 1984). He earned his first cap from Brazil in 1979 and went on to make a total of 60 appearances, including a spell as captain for the 1982 World Cup. Unfortunately for him, Brazil were eliminated in the second group stage of that tournament and never won a major title during Socrates' tenure, with their best finish being runners-up in the 1982 Copa America. Socrates won individual awards, though, and was named the 1983 South American Footballer of the Year over Argentina's Ubaldo Fillol and Brazil's Éder. After leaving Corinthians in 1984, he spent a season in Italy with Fiorentina, then returned to Brazil to play for Flamengo, Santos, and Botafogo before retiring in 1989. Having earned a medical degree during his playing days, he became a practicing physician upon retiring from football and also wrote prolific columns on sports and politics. At the beginning of December 2011, he went into the hospital for food poisoning and died from related complications.

LYON BEATS THE ODD

2011

On 7 December 2011, Lyon advanced in the Champions League despite starting the day from what seemed to be an impossible position. It was the last day of the group stage and Lyon were in third, behind leaders Real Madrid and second-place Ajax. Lyon were three points behind the Dutch and needed both an Ajax loss and a win of their own over Dinamo Zagreb in order to draw level on points. But the challenge did not stop there. They also needed to make up a 7-goal gap in differential, which was a tough ask given that Lyon had scored only twice in their other five group stage matches (both against Zagreb). Playing at Dinamo's Stadion Maksimir, the hill grew even steeper after Zagreb took the lead with a 40th-minute goal from midfielder Mateo Kovačić (despite losing midfielder Jerko Leko to a 28th-minute red card). But Bafétimbi Gomis equalized for Lyon just before the break. The second half belonged to Lyon. By the 70th minute, they were up 1-6 with a goal from Maxime Gonalons (47'), one from Lisandro López (64'), and three more from Gomis (48', 52', 70'). At the same time, Real Madrid were on top of Ajax 0-2, bringing Lyon level with the Dutch on goal differential. Then Jimmy Briand pushed Lyon ahead with a final goal against Zagreb in the 75th minute and Real Madrid added another against Ajax in stoppage time to put Ajax's differential at zero and Lyon's at +2. Lyon's reward for the improbable result was a trip to the Round of 16, where they were eliminated on penalties by APOEL.

JUVENTUS COMPLETE THEIR COLLECTION On 8 December 1985, Juventus won the Intercontinental Cup on penalties over Argentinos Juniors, becoming the first--and so far only--team to win all of their possible major trophies. Playing before a crowd of 62,000 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Argentinos forward Carlos Ereros opened the scoring by chipping Juventus goalkeeper Stefano Tacconi in the 55th minute. The sides then traded a pair of disallowed goals before Michel Platini brought Juventus level with a 63rdminute penalty kick. Soon afterward, Platini found the back of the net with a brilliant move, lifting the ball over a defender with his right foot, then firing home with his left, but the referee disallowed it because another Juventus player was offside. Instead, Argentinos took the lead in the 75th minute when José Antonio Castro scored from a tight angle into the far side of the net. Not to be outdone, Juventus forward Michael Laudrup scored from a equally narrow degree seven minutes later. Locked at 2-2, the match went into a penalty shootout. After a miss from Laudrup and two from Argentinos, Platini converted the final kick to give Juventus the trophy. It marked a complete silverware collection for the team from Turin, who had already won all of the domestic and European competitions available to them.
