FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK “THEY HAVE STRENGTH IN DEPTH, AND WILL BE TOUGH TO BREAK DOWN SO WE Good evening everyone,

Tonight we welcome Bootle to the Royal British Legion Stadium in what I'm hoping will be an open and exciting game. Bootle have a very strong squad, and have depth so they will be tough to break down at the back so we will have to be on top of our game. I’d like to welcome the Bootle players, staff and committee and I hope you enjoy the game, and have a safe journey home.

Tonight's visitors had a solid season last year and have strengthened well in the close season. They've had a bright start and I expect them to be up and around the top 6 again. We have been preparing since Saturday for tonight’s game and look forward to the challenge of keeping free scoring Ryan Cox quiet.

“They’ve had a bright start and I expect them to be up and around the top 6 again”

Last season we suffered 5-1 and 3-0 defeats in the two games against Bootle so it will be a tough ask to keep their strike force at bay. As a team we have come a long way since them results and improved massively all over the pitch. The lads have done brilliantly so far this season, and we now have an FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round to look forward to as we host Handsworth Paramore on the 3rd September which should be an interesting tie.

“As a team we have come a long way since the results of last season”

Saturday was pleasing from a results perspective but I still feel we can improve in all areas. Our ball retention can be better and more patience in possession will create more chances. But for now, we are just enjoying the fact that we are in the next round of the famous FA Cup after taking out two very organised teams. It’s a sign of the things this team can do. I'm hoping the chances keep coming and our strikers continue to take them. Up the Gate

Danny

Squires Gate made the ideal start to the new Hallmark Security Premier Division Season as they beat title favourites 1874 Northwich 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. The two teams met at the start of last season with 1874 Northwich winning that game 2-0 with Gate looking off the mark. 1874 Northwich had made some serous signings over the close season with three players coming in that won the league with Glossop North End two years ago.

The visitors started with a good attacking tempo and could have been ahead after a minute, but Stuart Wellstead headed wide. Gate then had a chance of their own byAnthony Stayte volleyed the wrong side of the post. It wouldn't take Stayte log to have another chance in fact just two minutes later he opened the scoring. Him and Ryan Tanser linked up well with the latter's

The first half was very end to end with either team having chances one after another. After Gate had opened the scoring Joe Noblet tried his luck from the edge of the box before Stuart Wellstead headed over from the corner for 1874. Gate played some good football in 1874's area and that was evident on 20 minutes when they broke away from a 1874 corner. The ball was headed clear by Hall The second half didn't start the best way for Gate as after just three minutes 1874 equalised. Right back Paul Conner getting forward to fizz a cross into the back post to find Tom Bailey who headed past Fletcher to level the score. Gate wouldn't have to wait much longer to take the lead again though. Three minutes after 1874 equalised, striker Ric Seear curled an unstoppable wonder goal into the top corner to give Gate the lead. Seear turning in and out of the defender before picking his spot with accuracy. Gate went on to play some lovely football in 1874's half of the pitch. Though Gate couldn't really find that key pass they looked comfortable in possession. First Ryan Tanser had the chance to pick out his strike partner in the box but his cross was easily caught, then Ric Seear tried to replicate his goal but this time Hall did well to save. Ric Seear then had another chance from a freekick after a foul on him but his touch was too soft and juts took the ball wide. Four minutes later Squires Gate would make it 3-1.Joe Noblet finding the feet of Ric Seear who turned and fired low into the bottom corner. Seear showing good awareness to turn and shoot in one swift movement. The visitors then had several chances to grab a goal back down the other end of the pitch. First they fired wide after several shots that were blocked. Then from a freekick Gate did well to first block the shot in the wall before Ben Fletcher got over well to save the follow up shot which he surely couldn't have seen till late! Gate wrapped up the points in added time and the last kick of the game. Gate hitting 1874 on the break with Noblet, Seear and Dawson breaking forward. Seear found the run of Noblet who showed his class to chip the ball over Hall

Gate came into the game having beaten one of the title favourites 1874 Northwich 4-1 on Saturday. Gate left two goal striker Ric Seear on the bench due to an slight injury. The first 10 minutes were a very even affair with both sides cancelling each other out. Gates first chance came for Brett Dawson. The free kick was played in short to Dawson who beat his man and shot low at the near post. Atherton Colls keeper Reid did very well to get down low to save between him and the post.

Gate then could have scored again a couple of minutes later when the keeper Reid tried to play shot to the defender. The pass was picked up by Riley who ran down on goal but out the shot wide of the post. The breakthrough came in the 36th minutes. Jamie Gibsonwith the chance to score for Gate but he scuffed his shot into the ground. From that the homeside countered striker Mark Battersby heading pay Fletcher after a mistake from Carroll.

With Gate 1-0 down at half time manager Danny Penswick chose to bring Joe Noblet andAlex McKendrick on.

Gate came out second half and looked a lot better. The home side looked to be happy to settle for the 1-0 win as the second half went on. Gate had several chances from set pieces but couldn't capitalise. First Noblet tried to catch the keeper out at the near post from the corner but that failed. Then a Freekick from Mckendrick was fired wide. Brett Dawson almost played in sub Joe Noblet on 61 minutes but the pass was cut out at the last minute. A couple of minutes later Ben Fletcher made a superb save. Jake Higham loosing the ball on the edge of the box allowed Ben Hardcastle to shoot for the homeside but Fletcher dived well to deny him.

Another sub, Ryan Tanser had the chance to equalise for Gate on 78 minutes. Jake Higham clipped a lovely ball which was just inches from the incoming Tansers head. Gates last chance of the game came late on into the second half. A long ball played into the area found Brett Dawson in acres of space. He took the ball down before firing low across goal to deservedly equalise for Gate!

WE’VE MET BEFORE? BOOTLE 5 SQUIRES GATE 1 Saturday 10th October 205 HT: 2-0 The home side lined up with a young energetic looking side and didn’t take long to get into the game. It took them just 5 minutes to find a way though Gates backline and open the scoring. Josh Hamilton finding his way into the box unmarked to finish well past Fletcher. Bootle looked lively and were first to most lose balls and kept looking to launch a quick attack each time they got the ball. Gates first real chance came down the right hand side with Mckenna his run was found by Penswick but Mckenna’s cross was cleared at the near post. Josh Kay had a chance shortly after when he was found in the middle of the six-yard box but his volley was straight at the keepers chest who did well to quickly clear the ball. Josh Westwood was the next to take aim but like Kay previously his volley was blocked this time by the face of his own player Mark Buchan. Bootle made it two when a long ball over the top caught Gates defence out and Peterson made it two. The homeside looked ever confident with a two-goal lead and made it three after 42 minutes. The ball bobbled up onto the hand of Alex Colquhoun who was judged to have deliberately handled the ball Hamilton converting from the spot to make it three before half time. Gates first chance of the second half came from manager Danny Penswick. He lined up the free kick perfectly but the home keeper did magnificently to save the shot. Gate pulled a goal back after Ash Rowley spotted the home keeper of his line. He lined up the shot from out side the box and with the goalkeeper on the floor from Buchan’s challenge, the ball bounced over the line and in. Gate tried to attack the home side but couldn’t find the fluidity they had on Wednesday night and struggled to add to the one goal they had. Bootle were ruthless in Gates box and made it 4 on 73 minutes. Right back Ste Rothwell somehow found himself inside the box to fire to Fletcher’s left and score. Unfortunately that would be the defender’s last act as a couple of minutes later he would dislocate his knee. Substitue Dom Marie rounded off the scoring for the game a couple of minutes later when his fresh legs burst past Gates tiring defence to make it 5-1 and game over.

SQUIRES GATE 0 BOOTLE 3 TUESDAY 12TH APRIL 2016 HT;1-0 Both teams made a bright start to the game with Bootle having an early corner cleared by Gate. The home teams first chance of the game came after eight minutes after a great run from Stayte. But nobody could meet his cross at the far post and the ball went out. The same would happen a minute later this time with Tanser and Riley. Riley doing the hard work to win the ball back from the fullback before his cross fell just behind Tanser. gate played with a lot more confidence with the ball than in previous weeks. Ryan Riley was the next to take aim but his shot bobbled into the arms of Jones in net. Gate again having lots of the ball, but struggling to find the net. It would be Bootle next to take aim with Josh Woods having to be alert to tip over a shot. The regulating corner was cleared by Gate before Bootle fired over the bar. Ryan Tanser had the chance to break Gate goal scoring duct after doing all the hard work to flick the ball over his head, he poked the ball wide. Bootle ended the first half the better of the two teams with Josh Woods having to be alive to tip over the ball. Ryan Riley was the flagged offside down the other end as the half came to an end. Bootle opened the scoring in the 55th minute. A moment of quality from the visitors scoring straight from the Freekick. Four minutes later Jamie Gibson had a golden chance to level. But his header at the back post was over. Gate made three changes to try and force a reply. But a couple of minutes after Bootle made it 2-0. Gate caught napping at the back allowed the winger in to poke past Woods at his near post. As Gate pushed on for a goal the visitors made it three. Gate with several men forward were caught on the break and punished. Sub Dom Marie breaking free before

slotting past Woods to seal the points for Bootle

BOOTLE 3-0 ASHTON ATHLETIC PREMIER DIVISION / DELTA TAXIS STADIUM / SATURDAY 13TH AUGUST 2016 / 138 Bootle faced Ashton Athletic on the first Saturday of the season, and looking to add 3 more points to their tally after their opening day win against Barnton. Ashton were missing a few key players so they had a chance to take advantage of this. It was a bright start for Bootle, and they could have been 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes of the game. Daniel Murphy had the first chance of the game but couldn’t connect with the cross coming in. They eventually took the lead on the 27th minute, as the yellows could not clear their line as another cross came in, before Daniel Murphy managed to slot this one home. Bootle doubled their lead 7 minutes before half time, when another cross came from the left was connected by Tom Paterson who put the ball out of Pearson’s reach and Bootle continued to put pressure on the Ashton back line. Despite starting the second half well, Bootle extended their lead and finished the game off with half an hour to go through a deflection. Ashton saw the last 5 minutes of the game out with 10 men, which summed up the game for them.

KAY 10 10 P.DASWON (TANSER 70) (B.WOODS 61) GLEAVE 11 11 J.NOBLET It took Gate just 12 seconds to open the scoring a goal coming straight from kick off. The ball was played back to Captain Richards at right back, he delivered a weighted pass forward to find the run of Brett Dawson. The man who grabbed the equaliser in Gates 1-1 draw at Atherton Colls on Monday night was clear through on goal to calmly put Gate into an early lead. West Didsbury could have hit back on seven minutes when Rob Black tried a shot from distance but Ben Fletcher did well to get his body behind the ball and save. Almost instantly Gate went down the other end and had a chance of their own., Richards sending a searching cross in to test the keeper who did well with Mckendrick lurking. A minute later and Gate would double their lead. Richards again involved to find Joe Noblet down the right hand side. He swung in a lovely ball to find the head of Ric Seear who scored his third of the season. West Didsbury played some nice football to try and get back into the game and could have done so after 17 minutes. Unfortunately for the home side Ash Woods slipped as he shot with the ball flying wide of the goal. The home side would grab a goal back after 21 minutes. West's star player Matty Kay with a lovely volley from the edge of the box after the cross in found him in space. The home side then went on to have some good chances before Gate could have made it 3-0. The ball crossed into the box found Dawson, headed the ball into the path of Ric Seear but the usually lethal forward dragged this shot wide of the post. Gate ended the half with their backs against the wall ALBERT COOPER and would have been happy to hear the half time whistle. Ben Fletcher making a couple of superb saves. Notably to deny Woods who jinked through Gates defence but was denied by Gates number one. He had to be alert again as the corner came in to first punch clear of the crowd then gather the ball under pressure.

Gate made an enforced change at half time with Mark Thornber leaving the pitch to be replaced by Jamie Gibson. Thornber had gone down under a strong challenge towards the end of the first half and couldn't continue. Jamie Gibson had a great chance to make an instant impact after three minutes when Ric Seear played him in on goal, but Gibson's shot was easily saved. Gate then once again had Ben Fletcher to thank with another superb save. After Jake Higham miss timed his header Fletcher did well to get one hand to the header from Woods to tip over the bar. West Didsbury would go onto equalise on 69 minutes when Ash Woods was found with a through ball from Martyn Andrews. Woods took the ball in his stride and fired low into the bottom corner past Fletcher. West Didsbury wouldn't be level for long though as Gate went ahead again on 71 minutes. Midfielder Joe Noblet finding space in behind the home sides midfield before jinking past his man and curling a shot into the top corner. Noblet's goal his second in the competition after his penalty was the only goal against Maltby Main in the last round. Gate would do well to see out the game under pressure from the home side who changed to three at the back to push more men forward. With Gate putting their bodies on the line defender Paul Carroll dislocated his already broken nose which had been broken earlier in the week at Atherton Colls. Picture By ALBERT COOPER

. The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. The Bucks where the first ever winners of the Liverpool Senior Cup, had in their ranks the first black footballer in Andrew Watson and regularly had bigger crowds than their neighbours. In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, narrowly missing out on the football league the previous season. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season due to financial difficulties and the attraction of Everton playing in the First Division. They were replaced by new neighbours, LiverpoolA year later the Bucks joined the Lancashire Combination, which was won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a founder member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club, having to move away from Bucks Park on Copy Lane, dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. After several seasons of work behind the scenes and survival on the pitch the Bucks finally acquired a new home.In 2006 the club, with a new venue on a developing Vesty Road, the club were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship under the guidance of Chris O’Brien. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012 this time with Neil Prince at the helm. Prince also lifted the Senior Cup as Bootle manager - the first to do so in 100 years. After an indifferent second season Prince was replaced by Joseph Doran. Doran has gone about to replenish the squad with exciting local young players and all at the club are hoping these lads fulfil their potential.

OPPOSITION WATCH Media man Mark Ashmore gives us a quick analysis on the players he thinks will be a danger to Gate for today’s game. He feels the main threat will be free scoring striker Ryan Cox, who The Bucks signed from Runcorn Linnets during the close season. The 3 key players he has picked are Dean Porter, Josh Hamilton and Ryan Cox. Here is what you need to know about the deadly trio...

DEAN PORTER Last season;s Reusch Premier Division Goalkeeper of the year rejoined Bootle in the close season as one of many to leave league runners up Linnets. Lists higher placed clubs such as Southport, Skelmersdale United on his footballing CV. A good shot stopper and equally good to leave his line and collect the ball, he’ll be a tough one to beat tonight.

JOSH HAMILTON

RYAN COX

Gate fans will be no stranger The forward came in from to the attacking midfielder Runcorn Linnets during pre who netted twice in Bootle’s season and has already made 5-1 victory last season. an impression bagging two goals in four games. The former Wigan Athletic trainee has already made 3 appearances with 2 from the bench.

He will score goals wherever he plays and has already proved that he can do so, He’ll no doubt want to add to having played for AFC Liverpool and Linnets in this his tally for the season and will be a handful for the Gate league. Surely an Evo Stick team could take a punt on defence tonight. him just so we don’t have to play against him.

Doran has been in the hotseat at Bootle since 2013 playing for the club before taking charge. He’s lead The Bucks to a top 10 finishes in the last three seasons and will be looking to challenge for the title this year after strengthening his squad during the pre season. Joe adapts a very attentive attacking style of play and likes to build from the back. The addition of free scoring Ryan Cox, from AFC Liverpool will help bring in the goals this season.

ON THE ROAD

CONGLETON TOWN WHO’S IN CHARGE? Andy Alston LAST SEASON

CONGLETON TOWN 1 Gate made a good start to the game and had all the possession in the opening five minutes. As early as three minutes Gate had their first chance but the Congleton defender did well to Shepard the ball out of play after Gate hit the home side in numbers. The home sides first chance came on six minutes but striker Brian Matthews fired wide of goal after doing well to bring the ball down.

First Nathan Trout then Joe Noblet had chances for Gate but neither could capitalise. Trout sent the ball over the bar after the corner fell to him and Noblet half volleyed the ball from the edge of the area but that hit a Congleton defender and was cleared. Gates couldn't capitalise on their good start and went behind after sixteen minutes. Gate allowed the home side too much time to pick a cross on the left hand side. He picked out the home sides number 10 who's header found the bottom corner to give The Bears the lead.

Gate could have equalised ten minutes after. Good link up play between Tanser, Buchan and McKenna but Buchans low drive was well saved to the keepers left. Again McKenna was involved when he received the ball from Buchans hold up. But his cross was punched clear by the keeper. Gate had the last chance of the first half after good work from the front two again. But Tanser dragged his shot wide of the post.

Gates first chance of the second half came from a Freekick. Josh Westwood with a great chance at the back post but he just could stretch far enough to reach the ball. Gate made a great improvement in the second half and Jake Higham could have equalised. But his shot was straight at the keeper. Gate wouldn't have to wait long after that to find the equaliser though. Nathan Trout picking up the ball in defence. He took a touch before clipping the ball towards the path of Tanser. The striker bought the ball down with class before beating his man and firing low past the keeper. The goal was well deserved by Gate who had battled well throughout the second half.

Billy McKenna had a great chance to find both Tanser and Buchan in the box on 74 minutes. After working hard to win the ball back, he chose to shoot instead of crossing to find the two waiting. Gate could have won the game with several late chances but couldn't capitalise on good pressure. Gate will settle for the point after being behind coming away with a point at a tough ground like Congleton is a bonus. Gate face another though test on Tuesday night at home against Winsford.

GROUNDHOP DIARIES

PAUL KIRKWOOD

In our regular feature, we speak to groundhopper’s from all over the country and ask them what encourages them to travel to non league clubs and why they want to be involved within non league. This week it’s Paul Kirkwood...If you’d like to read more of Paul’s blog then visit - facupgroundhopper.blogspot.co.uk First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? I’ve always liked watching minor football – from accompanying my dad to the local park when growing up in Reading to reporting on my university team in Manchester.

What is the best part about non league? You’re always guaranteed entertainment – either from nosing around an interesting ground, observing the local characters and even sometimes what happens on the pitch!

How many grounds have you visited now? God knows. Perhaps 200-300.

Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? I particularly like the East Lancashire grounds such as Nelson, Padiham, Colne, Clitheroe and Rochdale Town. Esh Winning in Co Durham is among many favourite Northern League grounds. Best obscure ground? Probably the home of L’Île Rousse on Corsica which I visited for the Corsica Cup final while I happened to be on holiday on the island.

What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) Tadcaster Albion’s first ever promotion within the non-league pyramid in 2010. Golden evening.

Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? (teams in brackets) The best player I’ve ever seen in the flesh was Trevor Francis when he played for Man City while I was a student in the city. Everytime he got the ball there was a buzz around the ground. I also saw Robin Friday play for Reading [my home-town team] in the early 70s.

What has been the best goal you have ever seen? From PL to non league? Can’t think of any in particular – but the greatest goal of all-time in my view is Maradona’s goal against England in the 1982 World Cup.

Have you ever been to Squires Gate before, if so what was the score? Not yet. It’s slightly outside my range [I normally only travel up to 90 mins from my home near York] but I may yet be lured by a big cup tie possibly involving one of my local teams for extra spice!

What has been the best, and worst game that you have watched this season? And during your adventures? A recent contender for best match would be Warrington v. North Ferriby in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup last season. Great ground and atmosphere and a win for the underdog. Worst match of the season: Newton Aycliffe v. North Ferriby in the second qualifying round this season. A nothing ground, no atmosphere and win for the higher ranked visitors.

Is there any grounds that you are looking forward to attending over the next couple of months? Settle United in the Dales and Northallerton Town are next on the list.

We would like to thank Paul for his time in answering questions for our programme. If you are a ground hopper or have any interesting stories about visiting a football ground then we would love to hear it, so get in touch! Again, if you would like to have a read up on Paul’s adventures then be sure to check out his blog– there are some great reads on there about his FA cup travels.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END

CONNOR O’NEILL

We spoke to Connor O’Neill and asked him to give his thoughts on the upcoming season, what he expects to see from Bootle and what improvements he hopes are made. What are your expectations for this season? How can you improve on last season? I think expectations are higher this year than last. Joe’s added some real quality to the squad in the summer so I think we will definitely be aiming for a higher place finish than last year. Personally I felt we needed to improve in both 18- yard boxes. Last season we conceded too many silly goals - while far too often we failed to take our chances at the other end. Which teams are you looking forward to facing? Any grounds you enjoy visiting? I look forward to facing them all – they all pose a different threat and challenge. I enjoy visiting all the grounds in the league there all unique and different in their own way it’s hard to single one out. Any players that Squires Gate fans should watch out for today? All of them - but if I had to pick one it would be Kieran Haligan. Who could cause the most threat to our defence? Josh Hamilton is an incredibly talented footballer - while Ryan Cox’s goal scoring record in this division speak for its self. How have you got on during your preseason? Any players impressed you so far? Pre-season went really well, and included a win over Conference Premier side Southport. It would be hard to single any one player out as they all played their part in the different games. What has been the most memorable moment during your time watching Bootle? A toss-up between beating Everton on penalties in the Liverpool Senior Cup Semi-Final in 2014 or beating Tranmere Rovers 2-1 in the same competition a year later. What was the best game that you watched last season? Has to be our home win against Colne. The game had everything. We went 1-0 up – before our goalkeeper Ryan Jones saved a Jason Hart penalty. Michael Ordish then put us 2-0 on the stroke of half time – before Ste Hoy made it 3-0 ten minutes into the second half. But Colne hit-back with a quick fire double – before the Reds were awarded another penalty in stoppage time. But once again our keeper saved it to hand us all three points. It was an incredible game full of passion and drama. Everything good about Non-league was on show that day.

If you could sign 3 PL players on a free transfer, who would they be and why? Sergio Aguero – He’s the best player in the league in my opinion. David De Gea – Every good team has a good goalkeeper and he’s the best in the league. N'Golo Kanté – Does the job no one else wants to do and allows others to play.

If you were manager of a 5 a side team, and had to pick 2 Bootle players and 3 PL legends. Who would you pick? Bootle Players: Ryan Cox and Kieran Haligan Prem Legends: David De Gea, Rio Ferdinand and Dennis Bergkamp.

Have you ever been to Squires Gate before, if so what was the score? Yes, I came two season ago we sadly lost 1-0. Prediction for the game? It’s going to be tight but 2-1 Bootle

PREDICTION CORNER Last season, we run a prediction league for home and away fans that visited Squires Gate. We had over 40 entries through-

out, including other fans throughout the country. You get one chance to get as many points as you can predicting scores for games that are picked by the two editors. This season, we have changed the scoring slightly and added a new ‘double points’ section. If you would like to have a go, then send your predictions for the games listed below to haydendan@live.co.uk along with your name and the club you support by 19.30. The score in brackets next to the game is the result from the last time the teams met. This week we have Squires Gate members Brian Addison, Jay Hayden, Steve Palmer, Albert Cooper and Ray Richards who will be looking to get as many points on the board as they can at this early stage.

BORE DRAW AS CONGLETON ARE UNABLE TO BREAK THE GATE! Congleton Town 0 Squires Gate 0 Saturday 23rd August 2014 Report by Mark Ashmore

Squires Gate were again on their travels after a fantastic win against AFC Liverpool in the FA Cup. Gate travelled to 9th place Congleton Town on level points but one place ahead on goal difference, Gate lined up unchanged from last Saturdays win in the cup and entered the field full of confidence hoping to continue their unbeaten start.

It was the home side who started the brighter of the two, a cleverly worked free kick in the edge of the box almost caught out the Gate defence but nobody was in the box to meet the resulting cross. Gate’s main outlet for the day was Jack Sowerby but was constantly being caught offside by what was a very organised Congleton back line.

The away side had keeper Ben Fletcher to thank for keeping the game level for much of the first half, Fletcher saving several shots in the first half with both his hands and feet to keep the home side at bay. Gate were clearly facing a very good side and this was emphasised by the fact that the home Keeper didn't touch the ball until the 20th minute. It was again the home side who looked more likely to capitalise and open the scoring, Congleton’s Arron Kirk had a volley from the free kick cleared by Gate defender Josh Westwood as the home side continued the pressure.

As the first half wore on Gate started to put some great moves together and it was Gate who looked the better of the two sides just before going into the half time break, a cross in from Andy Richards just missed the head of Jack Sowerby, standing unmarked in the box, moments later caught the home side on the brake with the ball eventually falling to Sam Dickinson on the edge of the box but his drive fell just wide of the wrong side of the post. Good work between Jack Cook and Harry Dunn on the edge of the box led to a shot by Dunn but going just wide. Gate ending the first half with a flurry of chances the best being a corner fired in by Josh Westwood which almost caught the home keeper Ellison off guard but eventually cleared on the far post by the home side defence.

Into the second half and Gate started how they had finished the first, a good run from Harry Dunn started from inside his own half sending a cross to the on-coming Jack Sowerby but the ball flew inches over the strikers head. It was Sowerby again who looked to latch onto a long ball forward from the Gate defence but his clever chip couldn't find the back of the net. Gate again looked to break in the attack and with Sowerby clean through on goal with only the keeper to beat, the on rushing goal keeper got down at his feet to save.

On the 70th minute the home side had an appeal for a penalty turned down after a tussle in the box, the ref ignores the protests and waves play on. Back at the other end of the pitch and substitute Brett Ferguson had a great chance to open the scoring but his shot fell just wide, Congleton applied more pressure and looked to end the game the better of the two but a resolute Gate defence saw out what was a good point on the road
