The Gaffer ANDY CLARKSON “IT PROMSIES TO BE GREAT GAME WITH BOTH TEAM NEEDING THE POINTS I would like to welcome the players , officials and supporters from Burscough fc for today's game . It promises to be a great game with both teams needing the points . Our last meeting at their place we looked to be in control until a couple of defensive mistakes cost us getting something ,I hope we can put that right today . The current squad now has a good blend of experience and youth which is very healthy for the club and the enthusiasm and belief of this group is showing in each training g session and game we play . Let's hope we can get the 3 points today and makesure this great club is still playing premier league football next season .Please get behind our lads today and enjoy the game .

Saturday 24th March 2018// Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 102 Gate would be forced into an early change in the game when Seydou Bamba suffered a nasty looking elbow to the eye after four minutes. As a precaution the paramedics were called and thankfully Seydou was ok. He was replaced by Max Rothwell on 11 minutes and the midfielder would make an instant impact. He found Gary Pett in the box after 13 minutes and the striker, who looked fired up for this game, took the ball down but could only find the keeper with his volley. Dean Ing would go close next for Gate when he burst into the box, unfortunately for Gate the keeper was equal to his cross to palm the ball behind for a corner which Gate couldn't capitalise from. It wouldn't take long for Gate to get another chance though as two minutes later, Gary Pett would open the scoring. Scott Harries found Isaac Sinclair down the left with the young midfielder send a pinpoint cross first time onto the head of Pett who glanced the ball past the keeper. Manager Andy Clarkson would then be sent to the stands on 34 minutes after losing his cool with the linesman. The Gate manager furious with the officials when Ryan Riley was hacked down in the box, the men in black waving play on. Gate could have gone into the break 2-0 up but had a goal ruled out on 41 minutes. Ryan Riley's cross went behind for a corner and from that corner, Dean Ing rose highest to head in, but the referee had seen a foul in the box and ruled out the goal. The closest that the visitors came was just before half time. Former Gate winger Alex Ralph cutting inside but fired over from outside the bar.
Half time: Squires Gate 1-0 Charnock Richard
The second half started with a chance for the visitors, but again Ben Fletcher was equal tipping over David Prout's shot. Charnock would get another chance four minutes later and equalised. A lovely ball from the Charnock midfield cut Gate apart and found top goal scorer Carl Grimshaw who made no mistake to score his 41st goal of the season past Fletcher. Gate though would hit back immediately with Pett finding his second of the game. Ryan Riley's deflected cross fell to Pett at the back post and the striker made no mistake putting the ball in with his knee to restore Gate's lead. Ryan Riley was again on hand to set up another chance for Gate, he found Isaac Sinclair at the back post but the wingers shot fell straight at the keeper. Sinclair would soon make up for the save as he set up Gate's third goal of the afternoon. He played the ball through to Max Rothwell who dropped his shoulder past a Charnock man before slotting past the Charnock keeper. The visitors would have a chance to get back in the game with ten minutes to go. Alex Colquhoun judged to have caught a Charnock man in the box with the referee pointing straight to the spot. Luckily for Gate Ben Fletcher was on hand to guess the right way and save the penalty to deny Charnock. The win moves Gate to 9th in the league though teams around them have plenty of games in hand.

Wednesday 28th March 2018 // Townfield// Attendance:40 The homeside had their keeper to thank twice in the first 5 minutes. He denied Isaac Sinclair who met Ryan Riley’s cross before a minute later denying a fierce Gary Pett shot from outside the box. Gates determination would see them finally take the lead after 17 minutes. Gary Pett with the easiest of tap ins at the back post from Scott Harries cross. Pett again went close from a short freekick, but the Barnton keeper again denied Gate. Gate doubled their lead with another easy goal after 27 minutes. Ryan Riley’s chip over the keeper looked to be going in but Isaac Sinclair made sure at the back post to fire in. Gary Pett could have scored his second goal of the game just before half time, but he fired over from inside the box.
Isaac Sinclair found the sub with his cross and Charnley turned the ball in. Another sub would grab a goal from the bench as Finley Clarkson scored his first for the club. The 16 year old in the right place at the right time to turn in Scott Harries cross at the back post. Gate had another goal waved away as Gary Pett’s header in was judged to be offside. The home keeper again had to be alert as he saved a thunderbolt from Ryan Charnley from outside the box. He stopped the shot before Harries was inches away from adding his name to the scoresheet. Winger Isaac Sinclair would add his second of the night after being denied several times. Ben Fletcher sent a goal kick to the winger, he controlled the ball down to Richards who sent the young winger running, he made no mistake cutting inside and firing past the keepHalf time: Barnton 0-2 Squires Gate er. Richards then grabbed his second assist of the game late Pett would get his second of the game six minutes into the into the half. He sent a lovely cross field ball to find Ryan second half. He muscles off a defender to reach a ball over Charnley who took the ball down before curling past the the top before firing past the keeper. The goals would contin- keeper for his second of the game. ue as sub Ryan Charnley got into the act with one of his first touches since coming on

Saturday 31st March 2018 // Brantingham Road Stadium // Attendance:65 The homeside came into this game with just one win in their last nine games but started well forcing Ben Fletcher to punch clear from an early Corner. Gates only chance early in the game came when in form striker Gary Pett looked to test the keeper with a quick turn and shot, but his effort fell well wide of the goal. The Manchester side who sat 20th in the league coming into this one could have taken the lead after 11 minutes. Alex Colquhoun losing out on the edge of the box but Ben Fletcher was there to save Coop’s low drive across goal. Gate themselves should have opened the scoring with the best chance of the game. Young winger Isaac Sinclair playing a lovely ball into the back post to find the run of Ryan Riley at the back post but he couldn’t direct his header towards goal. Sinclair himself had a similar chance from the same area soon after but again he couldn’t test the keeper. Scott Harries showing good determination to win the ball back before finding Sinclair at the back post but he head over. Maine Road thought they took the lead after half an hour when Jack Coop headed in, but the linesman saved Gate with the offside flag.
Half Time: Maine Road 0-0 Squires Gate
The game was dominated with both free kicks and corners and it was Gate who had a great chance to go ahead from a corner. Isaac Sinclair picking the ball up from a knock down from the corner beat three Maine Road players on the edge of the box but he couldn’t beat a fourth and the ball was cleared. Soon after Gate opened the scoring after several times of asking. Gary Pett flicking the ball onto Scott Harries after winning the ball in the air, Harries bust into the box then returned the ball to Pett who fired low past the keeper. The homeside though wouldn’t be lose faith going behind and equalised 10 minute later. A long throw into the box wasn’t cleared and was eventually headed past Fletcher by sub Ben Davison. Gate then had Ben Fletcher to thank with five minutes of the game left when he did well to save one on one with his feet. Gate could have won the game even nearer full time through Scott Harries. A long throw into the box was headed onto the Gate captain at the back post, but he couldn’t stretch to meet the ball.

THE BOSS
DAVE SUTTON Dave was appoint as Burscough Manager back in July 2016 when he joined them from Prescot Cables. He first season wasn't the great as he got relegation from the Evo-stick but he would want this season to be different. Dave wouldn't want his team to do the same as fellow club New Mills where the had 2 relegation in two season but he know this league is the hardest to get off with just that one promotion place and knows that they could ne more then 3 being relegation going into this new step that the FA brought in.
BREIF HISTORY Following the Second World War the present Burscough club was founded in 1946, starting life in the Liverpool County Combination. In only their second season, 1946/47, they achieved a unique treble, winning the Lancashire Junior Cup, George Mahon Cup and the Liverpool Challenge Cup. Two years later they again claimed the Junior Cup and also won the County Combination title for the first time. In 1952 they won the Liverpool Challenge Cup for a second time. In 1953/54 Burscough joined the Lancashire Combination winning the Second Division Championship in their first season and scoring 155 goals in the process. 1955/56 saw arguably the club’s greatest ever achievement as they won the First Division Championship ahead of non-league giants Wigan Athletic. In 1959 they reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time; going down 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra in front of A 4,200 gate at Victoria Park. Another trophy winning spell commenced in 1966/67 season under manager Bobby Langton as the club completed a hat trick of Junior Cup successes against South Liverpool at Wigan. The Lancashire Combination First Division title was regained in 1969/70 season. In 1970/71 Burscough joined the Cheshire County League, finishing runners-up to Rossendale United. The following season they won the Liverpool Non-League Senior Cup and in 1974/75 the Cheshire League Cup was lifted. The Linnets also reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper on three other occasions. In 1977, a 1 -0 defeat at Blyth Spartans, in 1979, a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United in front of 14,000 spectators and in 1980, a 2-1 defeat against Altrincham. In 1982 the Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League and had the distinction of becoming the Leagues first ever Champions under Bryan Griffiths. In 1989/90 season Burscough suffered their first ever relegation, however, the appointment of Russ Perkins as manager in 1991 was to bring about a change in the club’s fortunes as Burscough reached the League Cup Final and gained promotion back to Division One. In 1992/93 Burscough lost 2-1 to Conference bound Southport in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park before 2,000 spectators. Success was achieved by winning the League Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Nantwich Town. In May 1995, Burscough appointed John Davison as Manager. In his first season Burscough went on to win the League Challenge Cup for the second time, beating League Champions Flixton 1-0 at Gigg Lane, Bury. In 1996/97 Frank Parr completed 50 years with the Club and was presented with The Football Association 50 Year Long Service Award. The following season after finishing runners-up in the North West Counties League the club made history by being promoted to the Unibond League. They also won the League Floodlit Trophy and reached the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup against Liverpool. In 2000/01 season the Linnets won the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first ever time after beating Conference side Southport. Following the resignation of John Davison the club appointed Shaun Teale as player/manager in May 2002 and the ex-Aston Villa defender went on to sensationally lead the club to its greatest ever achievement as Burscough became the smallest club to ever win the FA Trophy following a tremendous 2-1 victory over Tamworth at Villa Park on Sunday 18th May 2003 in front of a crowd of 14,296 spectators and televised live on Sky. There were incredible scenes as almost 2,000 fans welcomed the team home to Victoria Park that evening but celebrations were dampened less than six weeks later as the club found it necessary to relinquish Teale of his managerial duties. Former Liverpool, Galatasary and West Ham United midfielder Mike Marsh was appointed manager but after a poor start to the season Marsh resigned and ex-Southport defender Derek Goulding took over in October 2003. An incredible end to 2003/04 season saw Burscough finish with a remarkable run of victories that saw them claw their way out of the bottom three into the play-offs for Conference North. Despite playing all their games away from home the Linnets went on to reach the play-off final where they only went down at Bradford Park Avenue following extra-time. During the summer Frank Parr stepped down after 30 years as chairman with local businessman Chris Lloyd taking over at the helm. Season 2005/06 was another historic one for Burscough F.C. as they went on to reach the Second Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time in their history. In reaching that milestone they defeated League One side Gillingham 3-2 on a never to be forgotten day at Victoria Park before going out to Burton Albion. Derek Goulding`s tenure as manager ended in June 2006 when he was replaced by former Southport manager, Liam Watson. The 2006/07 season was Burscough F.C`s Diamond Jubilee and one of the ways the club marked the event was by playing in a predominantly white kit with a spe-
NWCFL NEWS The first part of an Easter weekend double header of fixtures began on Friday and Saturday, with two Premier Division games played on Good Friday afternoon.
Runcorn Linnets remain at the top of the table, although they had to settle for a goalless draw at Bootle. Meanwhile, Runcorn Town stay in fourth after coming from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to City of Liverpool. John Connolly and Luke Denson with a penalty had the Purps two ahead after just 17 minutes, but Paul McManus pulled a goal back with 57th minute penalty before Craig Cairns struck the equaliser 13 minutes from time. On Saturday, the eye catching result was at the Silentnight Stadium, where Widnes's unbeaten run of 17 games came to an end in dramatic fashion when they lost 6-1 to Barnoldswick Town. Goals from Ben Gorman, Andrew Hill, James Crorken and Aaron Hollindrake gave Barlick a 4-0 lead at half time , and Zack Dale and a second from Aaron Hollindrake rounded off a great afternoon for the home side. Hanley Town remain in third place after being held to 1-1 draw at home to 1874 Northwich. Joshua Thorpe opened the scoring for Town on 15 minutes, and Scott McGowan levelled for 1874 nine minutes into the second half. 1874 now have just ten games in hand on Runcorn Linnets at the top, having caught up some of their backlog in midweek. Charnock Richard are in sixth place after falling to a rare home defeat, West Didsbury & Chorlton emerging with the points thanks to a 2-1 win. Matthew Eckersley opened the scoring for West in the fifth minute, Carl Grimshaw levelled for Charnock on 26 minutes, but Ashley Woods struck the winner six minutes into the second half. The highest scoring game of the day was at the Ruby Civil Arena, where Padiham won 5-4 in a thriller against AFC Liverpool. Anthony Lyons opened the scoring for the Reds, before Mark Ayres, Daniel Boyle, Jason Hart and Jordan Spencer built a 4-1 lead for Padiham, which was reduced when Elliot Nevitt scored a second for the visitors just before half time. It was game on when Lyons scored his second just before the hour, but Daniel Boyle's second of the afternoon restored the Storks two goal advantage before Lyons completed his hat trick three minutes from time to reduce the arrears once more. Winsford United came from two goals down to eventually earn a point from a 3-3 draw at home to Ashton Athletic, Callum Gardner's 87th minute penalty bringing the Blues level. Down in the relegation zone, Abbey Hey did their hopes of survival a lot of good with a 4-0 win at already relegated Barnton. Andrew Smith and Lewis Haydock had Abbey two up by the break, and Robert Swallow and Adam Farrand from the penalty spot added two more in the second half. Burscough remain in trouble after going down 42 at Congleton Town, which leaves them just above the drop zone. Prince Ekpolo scored both Burscough goals in the first half which were cancelled out by Thomas Morris and David Short, and after the break Steve Foster and Declan Fletcher scored to secure the victory for the Bears. Maine Road moved a point closer to safety and are now just three points behind Burscough, after a 1-1 draw at home to Squires Gate Ben Davison struck an equaliser for Road 13 minutes from time, after Gary Pett had given Gate the lead. In Division One, it was a good day for Litherland REMYCA, who narrowed the gap at the top of the table to just two points, with their win at Atherton LR while league leaders Silsden AFC were held to a 2-2 draw at Cheadle Town. Aidan Kirby and Reece Kendall had Silsden two up after 32 minutes, but Richard Whyatt and Luke Farrow struck in the second half to earn Cheadle a share of the points. Meanwhile, at Crilly Park two first half penalties from Colin Quirk and a third goal from Paul Foy 15 minutes from time saw REMYCA through to their 3-0 win. Whitchurch Alport remain in third place, three points ahead of Prestwich Heys in fourth, after goals from Lee Pickerill and Dean Twigg earned them a 2-0 win at Daisy Hill. Meanwhile Heys lost for the first time in 11 games when they went down 3-2 at AFC Blackpool. Jack Williams, Conah Bishop and Daniel Pickering were on target for Blackpool, with Chris Baguley and Daniel White scoring for Heys. James Kirby, Stuart Tulloch, Josh Lane and Brandon Moores scored for Sandbach United in the 4-2 win at Nelson that keeps them in fifth place, and Alsager Town occupy the final play off place after their 4-0 win at Eccleshall. Michael Lennon, Taylor Attrell, Matthew German and Joseph Kearns scored for the Bullets. Cammell Laird 1907 kept up their hopes of a play off spot by coming from behind to earn a point from a 1-1 draw at St Helens Town. Daniel Greene had opened the scoring for Town and Hayden Cooper levelled for Lairds four minutes from half time. Holker Old Boys’ hopes of making the play offs were dented by a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Chadderton, Jack Turnbull scoring in each half, and in the other game that took place in Cumbria, a last minute winner from Adam Rigby earned New Mills a 2-1 win at Carlisle City. The other two games ended in draws, with an 85th minute equaliser from Joshua Walker ensuring Abbey Hulton United emerged with a point from a 2-2 draw at FC Oswestry Town, and Stockport Town drew 1-1 with Bacup Borough.

NORTHWICH VICS WALKER 68
Tuesday 27th March 2018/ Stadium /Attendance: 64 Burscough manager Dave Sutton was excited enough after his teams Macron Cup Quarter-Final victory over Northwich Victoria to describe his sides showing as;”The best first-half performance I have seen all season.” He was probably right too Burscough had dominated the Vic’s for almost the entire opening half and at the interval the main question was how the Linnets had only managed to score twice. The second-half was a different story as Northwich piled the pressure on and halved the deficit. But Burscough generally held on well and might even have scored again as they counterattacked quickly. Although it was a hard earned victory for Burscough it was only the due reward for their efforts. Burscough were without Alex Parkes who is suspended until Monday but they did have Matty Ward returning after a back injury and he partnered Chad Whyte up front, also back in the team was Prince Ekpolo wide on the left.It was Ward who launched the first salvo for the Linnets in the second minute. A Jamie Clark corner was only partially cleared and Ward’s follow up shot from 18 yards brought a good save out of Northwich goalkeeper Mike Donlon. Northwich went close on 12 minutes when a cross almost drifted under the home crossbar, but Linnets goalkeeper Josh Samberg dealt with that well. Burscough were playing some flowing football and had far more of the possession, but they lost worryingly lost Ward on 22 minutes, clearly his injury reoccurring and he was replaced by Peter Henerty. The pressure continued and in the 24th minute Burscough grabbed the lead. Clark’s corner went deep to the far post, from where defender Luke Gibson put a cross onto the head of central defensive partner Rex Kimona-Puissance, his header was blocked and the ball dropped to Whyte, the big striker slamming home his 38th competitive goal of the season to make it 1-0. Burscough were well on top and it was only down to some top class defending and a bit of wayward finishing that Northwich stayed in the game. Whyte had a header saved and Henerty had a goal disallowed for offside, then in the 40th minute, Burscough made it 2-0. A corner dropped in the Vic’s area and after one shot was blocked the ball in a frenetic scramble the ball went to Terry Cummings who fired home through a forest of legs. To be fair Burscough had been unlucky not to be more than two goals up at half-time and in the five minutes before Henerty brought a great near-post save out of Donlon and Whyte was frustrated by the crossbar with a chip over a stranded Donlon. Half the ground must have heard the shouting from the Northwich dressing room during the break and it was no surprise at all that they reappeared a motivated side, going immediately went onto the offensive. However, despite the Vic’s bombardment Burscough weathered things well and barring one massive bout of bagatelle in the goalmouth they kept the visitor’s at bay. In fact on 63 minutes Cummings had an effort cleared off the Vic’s goal line. 01 JOSHUA SAMBERG

It was an error in the Burscough defence that allowed Northwich back into the game on 69 minutes. Substitute Rory Gorman drove a corner to the near-post and it was missed by the Linnets near post man, the ball falling perfectly for another Vic’s sub Oliver Walker who finished well from a few yards out. Still Burscough looked dangerous with Whyte leading the line despite at times having lumps knocked out of him by the struggling Vic’s defence. He volleyed wide and in another move set Cummings up with a shot that was superbly saved. Northwich did come close once more. On 77 minutes the Burscough defence allowed another corner past the near-post man and Kieron Kenny headed against the near-post. The last ten minutes saw Burscough holding on well and although the referee had plenty of complaints when he signalled four minutes added time, Burscough were not in a great deal of danger. Linnets manager Dave Sutton has one job to do in training on Thursday night; that is sorting out how to defend corners that are driven into the near-post area, but his main worry will be making sure talisman centre-forward Chad Whyte is fit for some crucial Easter fixtures after the vicious kicking he took.

This second-round tie went ahead at the second attempt and the first half never warmed up in the icy wind. Burscough, who are five places below Gate in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and one point above the relegation zone, took the lead through Whyte 11 minutes after the break.
Gate drew level from a corner just a minute later, Mark Buchan controlling the ball with his chest on the edge of the area and giving the keeper no chance. In an end-to-end contest, Burscough grabbed the winner eight minutes from time with Whyte’s far-post header after Gate were caught on the break. The home side piled forward, including goalkeeper Ben

TUESDAY 26TH DECEMBER 2017
Gate had led at half time only for the homeside to right back, scoring late into the second half. Gate took the lead just two minutes into the game. Good work from the inform Gary Pett who beat his man to get into the box before avoiding a challenge. He then played the ball across goal to find Mark Buchan who had the simple task of tapping in the ball. Gate could have then doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. The home keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch after nine minutes when he pulled down Gary Pett who was in on goal. Pett dusted himself down and with the keeper only receiving a yellow card, lined up a freekick just outside the box. Unfortunately for Gate, the freekick deflected off the inside of the post before being cleared. Ben Fletcher then had to be alive in a mad spell to deny the homeside three times in six minutes. He first had to be alive when a freekick into the box found the head of Chad Whyte which Fletcher saved. Then from a similar area, Fletcher denied the homeside again before saving his best till last denying form Gate striker Terry Cummings on the half hour mark. The homeside would eventually equalise five minutes before half time. From Gate's own attack the Burscough broke forward seeing Ben Fletcher finally beaten by Peter Henerty. Gate wouldn't end there though and found themselves back in front on the stroke of half time. Gate stalwart Andrew Richards, forward from full back, showed great composure when the ball fell to him in the box to stroke the ball under Samberg to give his side the lead.
Half time: Burscough 1-2 Squires Gate Returning midfielder Dean Ing looked to extend Gate's lead straight into the second when he made space for himself, only to see his shot roll into the keepers arms. Ing could have then been in again minutes later when Mark Buchan looked for the midfielder's run, but the ball was cut out before it could find him. The homeside would equalise in the 74th minute. Defender Luke Gibson heading past Fletcher from a deep freekick into the back post. Burscough would then go on to win the game late into the last 10 minutes when a draw looked likely. The ball wasn't cleared by Gate allowing Matthew Ward to tap in a the back post for his third goal in four games.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.
(Un) Welcome Home, Wales
2000
On 29 March 2000, Wales played their first match at the new Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. And lost 1-2.
Built on the site of the old national ground, Cardiff Arms Park, construction on the stadium finished in the summer of 1999 at a total cost of £121 million. The Welsh rugby team hosted the first major event there, beating South Africa in a friendly. The football team's turn came the following spring, as they hosted Finland in a friendly of their own. A crowd of 65,000 showed up for the event, setting a new national team record (though it has since been broken). Unfortunately for the home fans, however, Finnish midfielder Jari Litmanen (pictured, battling Wales' Robbie Savage) scored the opening goal in the 21st minute. Welsh striker Nathan Blake found the back of the net in the 42nd minute, but it was the wrong net, putting the Finns up 0-2. Ryan Giggs pulled one back in the 60th minute, but that was the last
C'était Une Affaire Française
2010
On 30 March 2010, Lyon and Bordeaux met for the first all-French contest in the Champions League, with Lyon emerging as 3-1 winners. Bordeaux, the reigning Ligue 1 champions, were again at the top of the table, four spots above Lyon, and had beaten them in the league back in December. The Girondins had also gotten off to a flying start in the Champions League, winning six of their first seven matches to reach the quarterfinals (the other was a 1-1 draw with Juventus in the group stage). There, they met Lyon, who had just eliminated Real Madrid in the Round of 16. The teams' meeting at Lyon's Stade Gerland was a first, as French teams had met five times previously in UEFA competitions, but never before in the Champions League. Lyon marked the occasion by taking a 10th-minute lead with a goal from striker Lisandro López (pictured). Not to be outdone, Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh drew the visitors level four minutes later. Lyon regained the lead in the 32nd minute with a goal from Michel Bastos, then sealed the win with a 77th-minute penalty kick from López. That final goal proved to be crucial, as Bordeaux won the second leg 1-0, but lost 3-2 on aggregate.
Scoring With A Leg To Spare
On 31 March 2010, Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas scored the equalizing goal against Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinal. And he did it with a broken leg. Fàbregas, who joined Arsenal in 2003 after five years at Barcelona's youth academy, had been the subject of longstanding transfer rumors linking him with a return to his former club, adding a lot of spice to the match-up. Barcelona, as the reigning champions, were heavy favorites, but the Gunners managed to hold them to a scoreless draw until the break. Less than one minute after the restart, however, a long pass went over the Arsenal backline to a racing Zlatan Ibrahimović, who beat keeper Manuel Almunia with a lobbed ball to the far post. He then doubled the lead in the 59th minute, after another overhead ball left him one-on-one with Almunia. But Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott narrowed the gap ten minutes later with a precise finish. As Arsenal pushed forward for an equalizer, Barça's Carles Puyol fouled Fàbregas in the box in the 85th minute. Fàbregas stepped up to the spot and converted the ensuing penalty, then immediately afterward started limping. It appeared that he pulled a muscle, but scans later revealed that Puyol's foul had resulted in a small fracture in his right fibula. The injury forced Fàbregas to miss the return leg, which Barcelona won 4-1. He remained with Arsenal for one more season, then transferred to Barça in August 2011 for £29 million. He left Barcelona in 2014 for Chelsea, his current club.

ASHTON ATHLETIC 14.04.18 WHO’S IN CHARGE? Jay Folds and Dougie Pitts
GROUND? Brocstedes Park Postcode: WN4 0NR
LAST TIME OUT?
ASHTON ATHLETIC 2 SQUIRES GATE 1 Gate started this game superbly and looked to have adjusted well to Penswick's tactical switch of three up front. They opened the scoring after two minutes when Joe Noblet reacted quickest when keeper Martin Pearson dropped Tarren Moxon's cross into the box. Noblet made no mistake in firing the ball into the roof of the net to give Gate the lead. Ashton would equalise in some style 15 minutes later with a well worked goal. The ball was played low into the back post where the Ashton striker back heeled the ball past Griffith into the bottom corner. Gates overall performance on the pitch was very encouraging in the first half reacting well to going behind and still trying to carve out chances for the front three. First Max Rothwell took aim from outside the box but fired wide before Joe Noblet tried to grave another goal, but also fired wide. As the first half came to a close Ashton had a couple of chances to give them hope for the second half. First Ashton broke forward and fired wide from the right hand side. Then after Pearson in the Ashton net punched clear before Alexander could head from a corner, Ashton had three successive corners all defended well by Gate. Compared to the first half, the second half was completely different for Gate. The phrase 'game of two halves' has never been so appropriate for Gate. Ashton would take the lead after 69 minutes. After a shaky start for Gate Ashton struck with two passes and a clever finish. Tarren Moxon gave the ball away up front trying to play in Jordan Casey, Ashton broke forward down the right and crossed the ball low into the box to find a spare man at the back post to fire past Griffith. The second half started to fizzle out for Gate who didn't really get back into the game until the last 10 minutes. Late chances from free kicks and corners couldn't be converted. Corey Moorhead specifically did well to stretch to keep in a late corner but Gate couldn't capitalise from the follow up.
