The Gaffer ANDY CLARKSON “ON PAPER IT LOOKS CERTAIN TO BE ENTERTANING GAME WITH BOTH TEAMS LOOKING FOR THE POINTS” I Would like to welcome players , officials and supporters from charnock Richard for today's game . On paper it looks certain to be an entertaining game with both teams looking for the points . Our lads have given some great performances over the last few games and I hope they can continue that today. This week right on deadline day we managed to add two quality new signings , Connor Finlayson from fleetwood town and Alex pope from afc fylde , please make them both feel welcome. Plus we just missed out on signing Kian smart who joins us training for the remainder of the season from Preston North End .We now have a good mix of youth and experience in our squad as terry and myself look to strengthen for next season . Hope you all enjoy the game ,

Saturday 10th March 2018// Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 60 Squires Gate sufferer back to back defeats as they suffered a late defeat at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton on Saturday afternoon. On a wet and miserable day in Blackpool, the two sides at the wrong end of the league knew that a win for either side would be important to pull them away from the bottom clubs. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back Trio Max Rothwell, Gary Pett and Ryan Riley who missed out on Thursday’s loss at 1874 Northwich. Defender Jordan O’Mahoney came in to partner Alex Colquhoun in the middle of defence. Max Rothwell created the opening for Gate’s first chance for the game when he floated a ball into the box. He was looking for the run of Dean Ing, but the keeper met the ball first. Gary Pett then battled well to win the ball back on his return to the side, he played in Ryan Riley, but he wingers cross could only find the side netting. Midfielder Matt Eckersley had he visitors first chance for he game when he met right back Affleck’s cross into the box but could only find Ben Fletcher’s gloves. Gate went close again after 20 minutes when Max Rothwell had an effort cleared off the line. The midfielder fired a snapshot towards goal but defender Bayunu was in the right place to clear off the line.Gate opened the scoring after 23 minutes from the spot. Ryan Riley crowded out in the box as he looked to pass two West’ men, with the man in black ruling that Riley had been fouled. Gary Pett kept his cool to score his 14th of the season as he fired past Ashley from the spot. Gate almost had a quick fire second as Pett burst into the box, but West keeper Ashley managed to save the shot with his face. The visitors would be next to go close as first midfielder Joe Shaw saw his freekick go the wrong side of the post before top goal scorer Tom Bailey could only guide a cross the wrong side of the post moments later. Bailey was involved again in the last chance of the first half when he looked for winger Ben Steer at the back post, but Steer couldn’t connect with the ball across.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton Steer looked to make amends for his miss before the break as he sent a wicked cross into the box, but the winger could only find the post. Dean Ing almost scores a superb solo goal as Gate broke forward looking for a second. The midfielder ran from his own half but took a touch too many as he reached the box, allowing West to clear. Scott Harries then looked to test the keeper a minute later, he made space for himself on the edge of the box but curled his shot the wrong side of the post. The visitors showed their danger on the hour mark as they broke forward on the counter but the move ended when midfielder Shaw fired wide. Both Pett and Harries linked up well on 61 minutes but the latters cross could only find the keeper at the near post. The two linked up again six minutes later to go even closer for Gate. A freekick into the box found the head of Pett who in turn found Harries but the midfielder could only volley uncharacteristicly wide inside the box. The turning point in the game came on 83 minutes when West top goal scorer Tom Bailey, headed the Manchester side level. The striker who found space at the back post to head in Affleck’s cross past Fletcher. West who had been turning in the pressure for the last 25 minutes of the game would then bag themselves a late winner. The referee awarding the second penalty of the day but this time to the visitors, Gate protesting that the challenge was outside the box but all protests were waved away by the referee. Bailey stepped up to convert the spot kick and send the travelling West fans home with an important three points.

Wednesday 14th March 2018 // Pavilions // Attendance:92 Squires Gate picked up a big victory in their pursuit for league safety, beating promotion chasing Runcorn Town 2-1. Goal either half from Gary Pett and Scott Harries sealed the massive win for Andy Clarkson’s men against third in the league Runcorn Town. Clarkson welcomed back Isaac Sinclair to the side aswell as defenders Dan Gray and Dave Rossall. Recently signed on Trevor Sinclair was on the bench for Gate alongside Ryan Charnley, Jake Higham and Finley Clarkson. Gate surprised the homeside when they took the lead after just five minutes. Ryan Riley beat his man before putting a cross onto the penalty spot where Gary Pett ran in to sweep the ball in to finish of the move he’d started. Gate then had a chance to score a second when Pett again did well to win a corner. Issac Sinclair took the corner but goal keeper Adam Reid came and collected from his line. Down the other end Town had a corner of their own after Ben Fletcher did well to push a dangerous cross over the bar. Captain Scott Harries did well to clear before Fletcher collected the ball back in. Gate then had to be alert as not once but twice they cleared the ball off the line. First Ben Fletcher came off his line to clear a ball but lost out to the Runcorn player who crosses into the box only to find Dan Gray on the goal line. Then a combination on a defender and Fletcher did the same again to clear the ball.

HT- Runcorn Town 0-1 Squires Gate

Gate could have doubled their lead five minutes into the second half when Gary Pett had a golden chance. He beat the offside trap before firing wide when one on one with the keeper. Gate would eventually doubled their lead on 62 minutes through Scott Harries. Harries was sent through, beating the offside trap and kept his composure to fire past Reid for 2-0. Harries could have had a second four minutes later when he was sent in behind but Reid did well to save for a corner, which was cleared by Runcorn. Gary Pett then took aim from outside the box but he uncharacteristically shot wide from an area he has scored from so many times. Runcorn had several late chances as they threw men forward looking for a goal. They took aim from a freekick outside the box with six minutes left, but that was blocked by Harries in the wall. With two minutes to go Gate again cleared the ball off the line through a combination of Fletcher and a defender. Runcorn would get their goal with the last kick of the game as Craig Cairns reaches quickest to poke last Fletcher.

Saturday 17th March 2018 // Stadium // Attendance:51 Manager Andy Clarkson made just one change to the side that beat Runcorn Town on Wednesday night with Jake Higham coming in for Ryan Riley who was unavailable. Another local youngster Jordan Salthouse was involved for the first time with the first team and made up a three man bench with Ryan Charnley and Finley Clarkson. Much like Wednesday night win, Gate started this game quickly and took the lead after just two minutes. Gary Pett did well to battle for the ball in the corner before sitting down his man, making his way into the box, and finding Issac Sinclair at the back post who tapped in for his first goal for the club. The homesides first chance came after 13 minutes. A long ball was sent into the path of Blake, but Ben Fletcher did well to come off his line and collect. A minute later and Gate would go close themselves. Gary Pett took aim from outside the box but his shot was deflected for a corner. From that corner Dan Gray found Alex Colquhoun, but he got too good a connection on the ball and headed just over. In heavy snow it was Gate who looked the more conformable of the two sides, going close from a Dan Gray freekick. Just before half time Gate got in behind Abbey Hey again. Dean Ing found the run of Issac Sinclair in behind but his cross was fired wide at the near post by Pett

Half time - Abbey Hey 0-1 Squires Gate

Gate started the second half just as they'd ended the first. They went close again on 54 minutes when Dan Gray found Gary Pett, but the strikers header was straight at the keeper. Gate doubled their lead just after the hour mark. From the homesides first flurry forward in this half, Gate hit them on the counter from a corner. Sinclair found Seydou Bamba on the left, he sent the ball into the box which came back of the post where Dean Ing burst in to head in. The home side would grab a goal back out of nothing six minutes from time. Daniel Hefferman firing past Fletcher who had nothing to do in the game up until that point. The goal wouldn't matter though as in the 91st minute Gate would strike again. First sub Finley Clarkson went close when he hit the crossbar when one on one. Then fellow sub Ryan Charnley was in the right place at the right time to tap in when Issac Sinclair found him unmarked at the back post

league new boys Charnock Richard, on the back of two promotions in two years, posed a tough test for Penswick men after winning their first two games. The homside could have opened the scoring virtually straight from kick off after just 20 seconds. Ben Fletcher having to be alive to palm away the effort. Gate had two early chances of their own. First Dean Ing took aim from outside the box but his effort was always rising. Then the officials blew up for a foul in the ox after Gate had a great chance from the corner. It was from a corner that the homeside would take the lead. After 10 minutes the corner found Carl Grimshaw at the back post to head in. Gate, looking for an instant reply, went close when Ing headed wide from Mike Hall's freekick at the back post. The homeside would grab their second of the game after 15 minutes. The ball falling to winger Mark Woods on the left of the box for him to fire across the face of goal and past Fletcher. Former Gate midfielder Joe Noblet could have made it 3-0 just minutes before half time when he tried to curl a shot into the bottom corner, but Fletcher reacted well to push the ball out for a corner. From the resulting corner Carl Grimshaw was denied with Alex Colquhoun heading the striker's effort off the line.

Half Time: Charnock Richard 2-0 Squires Gate Sadly for Gate, the second half was a nightmare start. After just two minutes into the half, the homeside extended their lead. Another corner in was fired under the crossbar to where Luke Gibson was, forward from defence, to head in. Charnock then looked to further extend their lead with some lovely football around Gate's box but eventually fired over the bar. A freekick from the homeside was then palmed clear by Ben Fletcher which led to a counter for Gate, but nobody could reach Danny Green's eventual cross. A soft freekick was given against Dean Ing on 64 minutes and it led to another goal for the homeside. Former Gate midfielder Joe Noblet crossing in from the freekick to find the head of Grimshaw, for his second of the game. Gate had a great chance to pull a goal back on 66 minutes, Moxon laid the ball back to Jordan Casey who find Mark Buchan, but the strikers shot was blocked. Much like their other goals, Charnock added another from a corner. Centre back Luke Gibson heading in at the back post for an easy fifth goal. Gate would grab a goal of their own two minutes later when a mistake from the home team keeper allowed Mark Buchan an easy finish to roll the ball into the net. Moxon could have then added another for Gate, but a last ditch tackle from Sanders for Charnock denied the striker. The homeside could have had a sixth goal after 78 minutes again from a corner, but the right back's shot hit the inside of the post and fired out. Sub Jack Williams showed great feet when he looked to get a shot on goal, but he was crowded out by the defence and his shot was blocked.Gate again denied the homeside late on when Danny Penswck headed the ball off the line after Ben Fletcher had come out to close the ball down. Two minutes before full time, sub Jack Williams would get the goal his second half impact deserved. He picked the ball up inside the box before driving the ball low into the opposite corner to open his account for the club.

CHARNOCK RICHARD GRIMSHAW 23,34 67

Monday 19th March 2018/St Luke’s Barnton Stadium /Attendance: 143 Charnock won the toss and Winsford kicked off and set the early pace as the re-shuffled Charnock team struggled to adapt. The situation was not helped when Ryan Schofield who had declared himself fit went down with a re-occurrence of the injury he suffered on the previous Saturday within 2 minutes of the start. He struggled on but had to be replaced by Nathan Lindley after eight minutes. With the home team dominating and Charnock looking, not surprisingly, very disjointed it seemed as if they would be lucky to avoid a heavy defeat but after the first ten minutes or so they began to put some decent passing football together. Chapman in the home goal just beat Grimshaw to the ball and Prout burst forward and had a shot blocked. With Spencer Bibby now playing alongside Young in central defence and Lindley and Ralph playing as full backs in a flat back four the defence was looking much more settled and the direct tactics from Winsford were not causing any major problems. Charnock took the lead on 24 minutes, Woods back-heeled a pass from the left and GRIMSHAW was in on goal and he gave Chapman no chance to put the Villagers one goal to the good. Almost immediately afterwards David Prout had a great run from the half way line but he put his shot wide. McNally then saw his shot blocked when he cut in from the left as Charnock continued to produce some decent football. The home left back Damian Skolorzynski cut inside and shot from distance but it was never on target. The 37th minute saw Charnock increase their lead, a free kick from just inside the Winsford half by Ralph saw the ball headed on by Woods and GRIMSHAW hit a sweet half volley that never deviated from a path just inside the far post. So, from a very stuttering start to the game, the team in green were now definitely in charge. Charnock looked full of energy despite having completed 180 minutes of football in the previous 96 hours whilst Winsford ,who had not played for the previous six days, were looking distinctly lethargic. The remainder of the first half saw Grimshaw get his head on a cross from Prout but, under pressure, the ball went wide, Noblet had a great run from his own half only to see his centre just too far in front of Grimshaw and another free kick from the left set up Grimshaw for a left foot shot that went wide. Winsford made two changes for the second half, Michael Koral and Callum Garner replaced Danny McLaughlin and James Rothwell and they looked a different side in the second half. As in the two previous games, Charnock were forced onto the defensive but on this occasion they conceded goals. The home team reduced the arrears only five minutes into the half, an attack down their left finished with Halton diving to collect the centre but the ball spilt from his grasp and Scott Taylor was on hand to hit the ball home. Winsford maintained the pressure and a shot rebounded off the post on 55 minutes and the teams were level after 62 minutes. A cross from the right was headed on and Bircumshaw 01 ADAM HALTON 01 BEN CHAPMAN coming in from the left beat Halton at his near post. The home 02 SPENCER BIBBY keeper was having an easy time with Charnock struggling to 02 JASON FOWLES mount attacks but similar to the cup game at Bootle, against the 03 LIAM MCNALLY 03 DAMIAN SKOLORZYNSKI run of play, CARL GRIMSHAW scored another valuable goal and 04 ASHLEY YOUNG 04 MICHAEL TAYLOR completed his hat-trick on 67 minutes turning home, at the near post, a free kick taken by Ralph on the right. Back in the lead it 05 RYAN SCHOFIELD 05 JAIME MCLELLAN was a case of the Villagers hanging on and they could have in06 JOSEPH NOBLET 06 WILLIAM FOSTER creased their lead when Noblet broke clear down the left, he had the option of trying to find Grimshaw or shooting he took the 07 MARK WOODS 07 SCOTT TAYLOR latter and twice had his shots blocked. The home team equalised 08 NATAHN FAIRHURST 08 RYAN HOPPER for a second time on 80 minutes, Halton went down to save a 09 CARL GRIMSHAW 09 DANIEL MCLAUGHLIN shot from distance, the ball spun free and Bircumshaw scored his second goal of the evening. Lewis Pilgrim came on for the final 10 DAVID PROUT 10 PERRY BIRCUMSHAW two minutes in place of Noblet. The Villagers dug in and there 11 ALEX RALPH 11 JAMES ROTHWELL were no more scares and the game finished with Charnock collecting a point a result that probably most supporters would have gladly accepted prior to the kick off considering the 12 NATHAN LINDLEY 12 MICHAEL KORAL patched up squad that Charnock had had to field. Special men14 JOHN SANDERSON tion must be made of the debuts of Liam McNally and Nathan 14 CALLUM GARDNER Lindley who came into the make-shift side and both produced 15 LEWIS PILGRIM 15 DECLAN DANIELS excellent performances and showed the same will to compete 16 CONNOR LOFTUS 16 ISMAEL BANKS that runs through all the teams at Charnock Richard.

THE BOSS

ANDY WESTWELL Played for Chorley and Horwich RMI before joining Charnock in the 1995/96 season. Was a member of the side that won the West Lancashire League First Division title (Now the Premier Division) in 1997/98. After 129 appearances and 4 goals he retired in 1999 and joined Nigel Simmonds, as his assistant, at the now defunct Leyland Motors. Andy returned to Charnock in March 2001 as manager and has led the team to the most successful spell in the clubs history.

BREIF HISTORY In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. In 1957 they moved to the Preston & District League, where they have spent most of their time, apart from a brief flirtation with the Bolton Combination. In the Preston & District League they were soon amongst the honours, beating English Electric in 1957-58 to take the Guildhall Cup. Success also came in this competition in seasons 1963-64, 1968-69, and more recently in 1992-93. A number of league championships have also come their way, including winning the Premier Division in 1988-89. The 1967-68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001-2, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12. In 1993 the club moved to the West Lancashire League, and since then both the First and Second teams have gained promotion to the top division of their respective sections. They have also been successful in the West Lancashire League, winning the Premier Division Championship on seven occasions, in seasons 1997-98, 2003-04, 2008-09, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also won the Richardson Cup in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2013-14 and again in 2014-15. Numerous other honours have also come their way over the years including two recent Goldline Trophy victories at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium ,the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy in 2009, and the Northern Counties Senior Cup in 2012-13. The Reserve team have also been amongst the honours in the West Lancashire League. Following winning the Reserve Division championship in seasons 1996-97 and 1997-98, they completed a league and Houston Cup double in 2013-14, losing only one game in the entire season. The 2013-14 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the West Lancashire League with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles. The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League), they have an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league. The Academy team caters for younger players making the step up into adult football. The three senior teams are now referred to as the First team, Reserve team, and Academy team. A large number of junior teams also play in the Mid Lancs Colts Junior Football League and the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, with a youth team also playing in the Lancashire Sunday Football League. The club moved to Mossie Close in Charter Lane in 1968, after playing elsewhere in the village, and the adjoining club house was opened in 1988. A new ground has recently been developed on the opposite side of Charter Lane, known as Mossie Park, which now stages West Lancashire League games, with the new changing rooms having been opened in July 2011. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1.

MACTH PREVIEW BY MARK ASHMORE Gate return to Blackpool full of confidence after a perfect week to host Charnock Richard This game is sponsored by Broomheads Estate Agents, a big thank you for your support. Last time out Gate made it back to back wins on Saturday afternoon beating Abbey Hey 3-1 away from home. Andy Clarkson's men made a quick start to the game, much like on Wednesday night when they beat Runcorn Town, opening the scoring after just two minutes. Gary Pett finding Isaac Sinclair at the back post for the young wingers first goal for the club. Gate took that lead into half time, after the break they extended their lead when midfielder Dean Ing stormed in to head in Seydou Bamba's cross which deflected of the post. The homeside pulled a goal back with one of their only shots of the game through Daniel Hefferman before Ryan Charnley would seal the points in extra time. The Away Team Charnock come into this game sixth in the league having won only one of their last six games. This season they've won eighteen of their thirty one games, losing seven and drawing six games Charnock's last game saw them draw 3-3 with Winsford United on Monday night. Carl Grimshaw was again on target as he scored his 38th, 39th and 40th goals of the season. Two of those goals came in the first half to give Charnock a 2-0 lead going into half time. Winsford fought back in the second half with two goals of their own before Grimshaw struck again to give Charnock the lead. That lead lasted until the 80th minute when Perry Bircumshaw grabbed his second of the game to equalise. The form table for Charnock looks like DDWDLL placing them 16th in the form table. The win came against Bootle in the Macron Cup whilst the draws have come against Winsford United, Bootle and AFC Liverpool with the loss coming against Padiham. Gate will need to be wary of top marksman Carl Grimshaw who continued his good goal scoring form again on Monday night. The front man has five goals in his last six games adding to an impressive 40 goals this season. Also returning to The Brian Addison Stadium is Joe Noblet, the midfielder left Gate at the end of last season to sign for Charnock and has been joined there by another former Gate player Alex Ralph. The Last Time We Met The two sides last met at the start of the season in August. It was a heavy defeat for Gate and meant Danny Penswick side hadn't won any of their three opening games. Lethal striker Carl Grimshaw opened the scoring in this one before goals from Mark Woods and Luke Gibson before Grimshaw got his second of the game. Defender Gibson would then get his second and Charnock's fifth in the 66th minute. Gate grabbed themselves a goal back a minute later through Mark Buchan before Jack Williams, two minutes from full time added Gate's second with a low drive past the keeper. Head to Head The two sides have only met once in the NWCFL as this is Charnock's first season in the Premier Division. THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

On 19 March 1976, four-time Serie A Defender of the Year Alessandro Nesta was born in Rome. He started his career at Lazio, joining their youth academy in 1985. They tried him at striker and midfielder before establishing him at center back. In 1993, he signed a professional contract and became an established starter during the 1995-96 season, making a total of 28 appearances. By 1997, he had become Lazio's captain and led the team to the 1998 Coppa Italia, followed by the 1999 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In 2000, he won a second Coppa Italia that was paired with the club's first league title since 1974. That season also saw him win the first of four consecutive Serie A Defender of the Year awards. In the summer of 2002, he moved to AC Milan in a deal worth €31M. In ten seasons there, he won another pair of Scudettos (2004, 2011), a Coppa Italia (2003), two Champions League titles (2003, 2007), and the FIFA Club World Cup (2007). Along the way, he made 78 appearances for Italy between 1996 and 2006, though he missed the 2006 World Cup Final due to injury. Nesta left Milan in 2012 and played two seasons for the Montreal Impact, then joined Chennaiyin FC for one season before retiring in 2014. He then moved into management, taking charge of Miami FC for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

A DARK DAY IN DRESDEN

1991

On 20 March 1991, a European Cup quarterfinal between Red Star Belgrade and Dynamo Dresden was halted in the 75th minute due to rioting in the stands. It never resumed and went into the books as a 3-0 win for Red Star. Red Star won the first leg 3-0 in Belgrade two weeks earlier, so Dresden went into the second leg with a difficult task ahead of them. But they got a lift when the referee awarded them a handball penalty in the third minute, which striker Torsten Gütschow duly converted. the two sides exchanged several chances in the remainder of the first half, with Red Star getting the better looks. Only outstanding play from Dresden goalkeeper Thomas Köhler kept the hosts ahead at the break. Red Star finally scored in the second half, with winger Dejan Savićević evading four defenders and firing past a fifth from close range to draw the visitors level in the 51st minute. Twenty minutes later, they took the lead with a strike from forward Darko Pančev, who fired the ball between Köhler's legs and into the far corner of the net. That was too much for the home supporters--when the referee awarded Red Star a corner kick shortly afterward, the Dresden fans began hurling objects at both the Red Star kicker and the assistant referee. After a few futile attempts to calm the fans, referee Emilio Soriano Aladrén ordered the teams off the pitch and canceled the remainder of the game. Although Red Star were leading 2-1 at the time, UEFA later awarded them a 3-0 victory and banned Dresden from UEFA competitions for the following season. Red Star went on to beat Bayern Munich in the semifinals and then took the trophy with a win over Marseille on penalties in the final.

VINNIE JONES’S CAUTIONARY TALE On 21 March 1992, Chelsea midfielder Vinnie Jones set an English football record by getting a yellow card after only three seconds against Sheffield United. Jones had previously established a reputation for aggressive play and a casual attitude toward the rules of the game, most notably during a three-year spell with Wimbledon's FA Cup-winning "Crazy Gang." But he left there in 1989 and spent a season with Leeds where his disciplinary record improved--he got only three yellows all season long. In 1990, he moved to Sheffield United, then moved again a year later, joining Chelsea in 1991. While there, he continued to toe the line, but slipped up in a home match against his former club, Sheffield United, to earn the record-setting caution. To make matters worse, United went on to win, 1-2. Jones returned to Wimbledon, playing there from 1992 to 1998, then retired in 1999 after a season with Queens Park Rangers. Afterward,

LAST TIME OUT?

BARNOTN 0 SQUIRES GATE 0 It certainly wasn't a classic but it was perhaps what Gate needed after three defeats on the bounce. Winger Charlie Waters could have made the perfect start to his Squires Gate career on 10 minutes when he fired a great chance wide. Manager Danny Penswick played a lovely through ball behind the full back to find Waters, but his first time shot was fired wide of the post. The homeside then had two chances, first Chris Smith headed wide at the back post from a corner, then Jason McShane fired wide from a long way out. Manager Danny Penswick then fired wide to end what was a good spell of possession from Gate around Barnton's area. Joe Noblet then fired over at a second attempt after Charlie Waters was fouled after a mazy run. Down the other end the home side saw a goal ruled out for offside on 24 minutes. The ball cut back from the goal line into the six yard box and fired in but the player that passed it was judged to be offside. The second half became more of a scrappy affair with only one team looking likely to win the game. Charlie Waters again came close to opening his account for the club on 59 minutes. Paul Carroll's throw in was headed down by Seydou Bamba to find the winger, but his shot was fired over the bar. As the clock ticked on the game became more stretched with Gate looking to score a late winner. Charlie Waters was again involved when he latched onto a lovely through ball from Paul Carroll but his shot was blocked and cleared. Ten minutes later Waters found the run of sub Dawson whose shot rebounded into the patch of Seydou Bamba, but he couldn't adjust quick enough to shoot. Dawson and Bamba again linked up three minutes later, but the latter headed wide from Dawson's cross in. The late chances wouldn't end there for Gate with two in the last minute. First manager Danny Penswick could have won it but his shot from inside the box was blocked and cleared at the second attempt. The moments later Brett Dawson crossed the ball in from the goal line to find the head of Seydou Bamba but he couldn't keep his header down and fired over the bar.

NWCFL NEWSLETTER It's all to play for in the Buildbase FA Vase Semi Final second leg next Saturday, with 1874 Northwich having to overcome a single goal deficit to reach the final at Wembley after losing 1-0 to Thatcham Town. A penalty from Ross Cook in the fourth minute of the game secured the win for the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division side, and the sides meet again in the second leg at Witton Albion's Wincham Park this coming Saturday. The first legs of the LWC Drinks First Division Cup Semi Finals also took place, with Cammell Laird 1907 and Prestwich Heys holding the advantage going to the second legs in early April. Cammell Laird 1907 earned a 3-1 home win over Daisy Hill, going three up through goals from Ben Holmes, Joe Malkin and Josh Malden, before Mike Gervin gave Daisy some hope for the second leg with an 81st minute penalty. With the home leg to come, Prestwich Heys have a 2-1 lead over last season's runners-up Sandbach United going into the second leg. Goals in the space of ten first half minutes from Lee Bruce and Jacob Wood put Heys in control, but Jordan Davies reduced the arrears for Sandbach six minutes into the second half. in the Premier Division, Runcorn Linnets remain at the top although their lead is now down to five points after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to City of Liverpool. David Forbes gave the visitors the lead on 61 minutes, and Michael Simpson levelled for Linnets six minutes later. Widnes remain in second place after a 4-0 home win over AFC Darwen. Joint-manager Kevin Towey led by example with a hat trick and Michael Grogan added a fourth goal late on. The game between two of the highest scoring teams in the league, Bootle and Charnock Richard, ended rather surprisingly in a goalless draw at the TDP Solicitors Stadium. Charnock remain in fourth place and Bootle are sixth. Padiham moved up in to 8th place with a convincing 6-1 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton at the Ruby Civil Arena. Spencer Jordan bagged a hat trick for the Storks, Dominic Craig scored twice and Aaron Fleming rounded off a fine win. Squires Gate recorded their second away win in four days, beating Abbey Hey 3-1 at the Abbey Stadium. Isaac Sinclair and Dean Ing built a two goal lead for Gate, and although Daniel Heffernan pulled a late goal back for Abbey, Ryan Charnley secured the win for Gate with a third goal in the final minute. An 88th minute strike from Joe Whittington earned Northwich Victoria a 1-0 win over Maine Road at Townfield, and a first half own goal and a second half goal from David Short clinched a 2-0 win for Congleton Town at AFC Liverpool, a result that keeps the Reds in the relegation zone. Burscough gave their hopes of survival a boost with a 42 win over bottom club Barnton at Victoria Park, Chad Whyte scoring a hat trick, and after going behind early on, goals from Haydn Foulds, Matthew Boland and Daniel Eyres earned Irlam a 3-1 win over Ashton Athletic In Division One, Silsden AFC's lead at the top is now down to four points after being held to a goalless draw at the Venue by FC Oswestry Town. Meanwhile, Litherland REMYCA made up ground on the Cobbydalers with a 1-0 win at AFC Blackpool, thanks to Colin McDonald's 12th minute goal. Stockport Town recorded a fine 4-1 win at Carlisle City, Jesurun Uchegbulam scoring twice and Conor Downs and Ezequiel Miranda once for Dave Wild's men. Also in Cumbria, Holker Old Boys shared a 2-2 draw with Cheadle Town, Richard Whyatt rescuing a point for Town with an 87th minute equaliser. James Wolfenden gave Nelson the lead at home to New Mills, but goals from Arron Kirk and Sam Marshall sealed a 2-1 win for the visitors. Abbey Hulton United and Atherton LR shared a 1-1 draw at the Drayton Beaumont Stadium, Joe Lewis on target for Abbey and David Moore levelling for LR. It was a game that almost didn't finish due to snowy conditions, but Chadderton and Alsager Town weren't so lucky, with their game ending in a blizzard after 68 minutes.
