FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK “CHORLEY BRING WITH THEM A GREAT PEDIGREE AND HAVE HAD A GREAT START TO THE SEASON. TONIGHT WILL BE TOUGH” Good evening everyone, Tonight we welcome Chorley to the Royal British Legion Stadium, in what I hope will be a great game for everyone involved with the club. I would like to welcome the Chorley committee, supporters and players and I hope you all have a safe trip home after the game. Chorley bring with them a great pedigree and have had a great start to the season. It’s great as players when you can test yourself and I’ll be keen to see how we stand up to the challenge. I’m not sure what team Chorley will bring tonight but I’m certain that it will be tough either way and we will just have to take the game as it comes. Saturday’s defeat was disappointing to say the least but it’s how we react moving forward that’s important for me. Nothing has ever been decided in November and I’m still pleased with our start to the season and how we are playing, we just need to make sure we get some consistency in. We can’t afford to take our minds off the game, and we are always focused on what’s in front of us but sometimes we just have ourselves to blame.

Runcorn Town were a great side and it is clear to see that they will still be challenging for promotion at the end of the season, and the best of luck to them. Last season they finished 12th but they have got a new team there who have managed to get their heads down and now people are starting to take notice. I’ll be very surprised if Cairns doesn’t get the top scorer award this season, there just seems to be no way of stopping him.

So far this month we have played 2 home games, and both games were against solid opposition In Runcorn Town and Atherton Collieries who will both be challenging for promotion come the end of the season, and we have a home game against Hanley Town on Saturday so games are coming thick and fast over the next couple of weeks but again, we can only beat what’s in front of us.

Let’s hope tonight is another cracker. Up the Gate.

Danny

Report by Mark Ashmore

Gate started the better of the two sides and in the first 10 minutes, must have had at least 10 shots on goal.

The visitors opened the scoring on 6 minutes with their first attack of the game. League top goal scorer Craig Cairns holding off Dave Rossall to fire past Fletcher. Chances for Brett Dawson first from a corner which he fired wide then from a shot after he'd weaved his way through the defence fell in between Towns two goals. Winger Kevin Exell made it two for Town on 26 minutes. A tackle coming in from Ryan Stayte was evaded by the winger who fired low past Fletcher. The visitors were in fine from around Gates box and made it 3-0 going into the break. Striker Simon Thelwell this time in the right place at the right time to tap in with Gates defence frozen.

The second half started with Ben Seear going close for Gate after five minutes but after riding the challenge, his shot was saved by the keepers legs. Runcorn then grabbed their fourth and fifth of the game on 58 and 60 minutes. Striker Craig Cairns grabbing both to seal his hatrick. First he was unmarked in the box and had all the time in the world to fire past Fletcher. Then Cairns pounced on a mistake that the back for Gate to complete his hatrick. Town would make Gates day even worse on 69 minutes when sub Forbes was unmarked in the box to easily tap in at the back post.

Chorley Football Club was formed in 1883 after switching from rugby tofootball. In 1875 Chorley Football Club began partly as the brainchild of one Major John Lawrence, a Wigan player who had conceived the idea a year earlier. The inauguration took place on 15 October in the now demolished Anchor Inn in Market Street, Chorley. At that gathering Major Lawrence was elected the club's first captain. Henry Hibbert, who was to become one of the most famous figures ever connected with the town as Member of Parliament for Chorley,]took on the role of secretary. James Lawrence became the club treasurer. The Lancashire Junior Cup came to Chorley in 1894, nine years after the trophy's institution, and their win was the first of a record number of successes for the Magpies. They beat Clitheroe 3–2 in a replayed final at Ewood Park,Blackburn after a 2–2 draw. Chorley bid farewell to the Lancashire Alliance at the end of the 1893–94 season and joined the Lancashire League, winning the championship in 1896–97 which also saw them sell former Bolton Wanderersattacker Jack Lyden to Wolverhampton Wanderers for £100 (around £6,000 in today's money), a substantial fee for a nonleague player considering that this was eight years prior to the first £1,000 transfer deal. Chorley won another championship in 1898– 99, but was clouded by a notice to quit their Dole Lane Ground, and the loss of captain Johnny Parker, who had broken his leg. In May 1899 Chorley applied to join the Football League's Second Division, coming sixth in voting, with the top two being elected. September 1901 saw Chorley move to the Rangletts Ground, taking even the grandstand and hoardings, and 1903 saw the Lancashire League restructured as the Lancashire Combination, which was extended in size to encompass two divisions, A and B, with Chorley playing in the Combination B Division.[4] Life at the Rangletts Ground was short lived, with Chorley being evicted in 1904, and relocated to nearby St. George's Park. The 1904–05 season saw Chorley finish their highest position – fifth – for six years.Chorley suffered their worst season in 1914–15, finishing bottom of the league, but ironically the outbreak of the First World War saved them from relegation, for the Combination, like the Football League, suspended its competitions in 1915. During the war Chorley joined the Northern Division but due to difficulties in raising a team they were disbanded early in 1916. Chorley did not have a team for the next two seasons, but in August 1918 formed a side for friendly matches. After the re-formation of the Combination S. Heaton became the club chairman, Charlie Holgate the secretary, and T.J. "Dod" Gaskell the treasurer. Chorley took their place in the reassembled Combination (there was only one

CHORLEY 1 NUNEATON TOWN 0 SATURDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2016/THE CHORLEY GROUP VICTORY PARK/NATATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH After three winless games the Magpies recorded a deserved three points against Nuneaton Town. Marcus Carver scored the decisive goal just a minute before the interval, heading the ball beyond the defence before calmly slotting past Christian Dibble in the visitor’s goal. Central defender Dan Cowan, signed on loan from Macclesfield Town in the week as cover for Andy Teague and Kieran Charnock made his debut and goalkeeper Shaun Rowley made his home debut. Chorley started the stronger and in the opening ten minutes Dale Whitham was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet with a driven effort being tipped over by Dibble then from the following corner his powered header was cleared off the line. Will Beesley and Matt Challoner were both constant threats on the overlap, with the latter crossing to Carver but the strikers flick header was just too deft and drifted wide then the formers sprint through the visitor’s defence was only stopped by an untimely bobble which switched the play and put the visitors on the attack, but the shot went wised with Rowley untroubled.

Dibble then denied Whitham who was following up from a half cleared corner. A foul on Jason Walker 25 yards out gave Adam Blakeman an opportunity from a dead-ball, but Dibble was again on hand to keep the scoreline level. But partity didn’t continue to the break as Carver carved open the defence. His header creating space to run at Dibble, and as the keeper attempted to close the angle his arrowed his effort into the bottom right beyond the keepers outstretched left hand. After the break with a goal in the bag the game tightened up as Chorley defended well with the visitors unable to unlock the Magpies back-line. Jake Cottrell, who as ever ran tirelessly throughout, crossed to Carver but there was just too much pace on the ball and it ran harmlessly wide. Blakeman’s ability from free-kicks was show with a perfect ball to the back post that picked out Walker, whose cushioned header landed perfectly for Cottrell but the midfielders flow high over the bar.

OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks include Waqas Adam, Josh O’Keefe and Sefton Gonzales. Waqas played against us last season and was fantastic in both games and is a threat going forward as well. O’Keefe has plenty football exeorince as he has been at Blackburn and highers league with Southport. Gonzles is a big Clitheroe's Striker is good with his feet and he will be a threat up front for gates backline.

WAQAS ADAM The name should be familiar to Gate fans, the right back played against us last season and was superb. A constant attacking threat from full back posses a wicked cross on him.

JOSH O’KEEFE

SEFTON GONZALES

Plenty of football league experience the former Blackburn Rovers trainee also has experience playing in the National Leagues with the likes of Southport and Hereford.

The big former Clitheroe striker has made the step up with ease and despite his size, has brilliant feet.

Also has an eye for goal from midfield.

He started his career with hometown club Carlisle United, and also played for Crystal Palace, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers as well as a loan spell with Coventry City. A goalscorer in Blackburn's League Cup victory in 2002, his career declined after a near-fatal motorcycle accident later that year. He won six England under-21 caps and was called up once to the senior national team.

A motorcycle accident in Rome, Italy during the summer of 2002 nearly killed Jansen and long-term hospitalisation followed (he spent six days in a coma). In the seasons after the accident he struggled to regain his place in the Blackburn side which led to him being loaned to Coventry City in 2003,[5] where he scored 2 goals in 9 appearances. He made another attempt to force his way into the Blackburn team at the start of the 2004–05 season, scoring 2 goals in 8 appearances.

However, it was felt that he had still not recovered mentally from the accident and was struggling to cope with the pressures of Premier League football. As a result, Blackburn decided it best for him take another break from football and

Scores goals wherever he plays and will no doubt do so for Chorley this season.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END We spoke to Chorley fan Paul Metcalfe and asked him about the expectations in around the National League North side this season and the ultimate aim for the club. He also tells us which 3 Premier League players he would love to sign on a free transfer.

What are your expectations for the season? What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on last seasons finish? We finished eighth in the National League North last term in Matt Jansen's first season in charge. Obviously I'd like to see us finishing higher up the table and hope that we'll make the playoffs. I'm really impressed with the squad that Janny has put together. We've a relatively low budget compared to many clubs in the league, but the team spirit is almost tangible and has taken us up to third in the table. I think that these improvements alone will help us to make that higher finish up the league. After a good start, is promotion to the National League too much to ask? It's a tough ask to be fair. There are some big spenders in the league this season. AFC Fylde, just down the road from here have the financial clout to attract some big players, and went full time in the summer. They're setting the standard for the league this season and will take some beating. Add to them, we have Salford City with the Class of 92 backing them, and Darlington 1883, Harrogate Town and Kidderminster Harriers being amongst the front runners. I'm a firm believer in never say never however - defensively we have been tight having conceded just 13 goals in 18 league games. So as long as aim to score and don't let in any goals we're in with a shout of going up at least via the playoffs. National League North is two divisions below the football league. Would you say that it is the ultimate goal to reach the Football League? In my opinion it would be a really big ask to get there. We're certainly a club with ambition now, but to reach the Football League we would need huge investment in the ground. Victory Park is not far off 100 years old now and she is really showing her age - we'd have to ask questions about developing the ground on the existing site or moving to a new location. So for me, I'd probably want to set a target of reaching the National League in the next 2-3 seasons then have a real think about where we take the club next. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? I'm looking forward to facing AFC Fylde - there's always a sense of rivalry and bragging rights between us. We play each other on Boxing Day and New Years Day so it's a perfect pair of matches for the festive season. Plus of course we get to visit the impressive looking Mill Farm for the first time. I'm also looking forward to going to the Shay to face Halifax a Town and I always like our trips to Boston United. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to Gate? Any players that Gate fans should watch out for? I'm not sure of the squad which Janny will put out. We've a few key injuries at the moment, so in his post match interview at the weekend he said he may give some of our talented Development Squad a deserved run out. Of the first team, Marcus Carver and Jason Waker are tricky up front, Dale Whitham and Jake Cottrell are the engine of the midfield and Scott Leather and Stephen Jordan at the back have been solid. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Chorley? Apart from the two promotions in recent seasons, my favourite game has to be the play off semi final at Boston's York Street a couple of years ago. We were 2-0 down in the first half so the second half was an uphill task. On loan Chris Doyle halved the deficit not long into the second half. That looked to be the final result as the minutes and seconds ticked away. The referee gave four added on minutes after the 90 - the game moved into the 95th minute and a long pass from midfield found the Adam Roscoe's rising foot in a bicycle kick and flicked the ball into the top right hand corner of the net. I have never experienced the feeling I felt that late afternoon. To cut a long story short, in the penalty shoot out which followed, we've our star keeper Sam Ashton to thank for ensuring our way into the play off final. And why the extra added minute? It's thanks to Boston fans who decided to keep the ball when it was kicked out of play and into their stand. The referee added on the seconds they wasted to the previous added time, and their fate was sealed. Which players will be key for you this season? I really wouldn't like to say in all honesty. Sounds like a chiche but every single member of the squad is key in trying to help us reach our goal. As I said earlier, the team spirit is infectious and it is that which Is more important for me. If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Now that is a difficult one as I rarely take any notice of any league higher than the National League so probably couldn't name that many. Number one would have to be Jamie Vardy as he has played at non league so would understand the need to grind out results rather than playing pretty football you see in the Premier League. For the other two I'd probably go for Aguero of Manchester City and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Manchester United. Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? No, this is my first time, and am looking forward to ticking another new ground off the list. If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to pick 2 Chorley players and 3 PL legends. Who would be in your side

DREAM XI In a new feature, we are going to ask Squires Gate fans and committee members, who would make their dream team of players that they have seen play live. This week we have media manager Mark Ashmore who has been

MATT GILKS

RANGERS

“Imagine what would have happened if he didn’t get injured when Blackpool were in the Premier League? Chances are we would have won a lot more with him rather than Richard Kingston. He also proved he can still do it with a blinding performance for Glasgow Rangers recently.

ANDREW RICHARDS

SQUIRES GATE

“I don’t think I could do something like this and not name a Gate player in my team. Rico has been here for years and consistently puts in great performances. Still waiting for him to bag his one goal a season though.

JOSH WESTWOOD

LANCASTER CITY

“When he first came in it was as a midfielder I think then he moved back to a defender and it would out to be a masterstroke, Gate have really missed the big man since he’s left and made the step up with ease to Lancaster. I’ve never seen a defender more comfortable bringing the ball out at this level than him. “

JOHN TERRY

CHELSEA

“When he came to Blackpool, and he was warning up before the game I thought he looked overweight and sluggish, how wrong was I? I think he won everything during the game. I’m a big fan of players that give their all and he is certainly one of them. Also a good leader for the back line.”

STEPHEN CRAINEY

BLACKPOOL

“The left back was seen as a real coup of a signing when he came to Blackpool. Superb striker of a freekick and not half bad getting forward and whipping balls into the box.

KEITH SOUTHERN

BLACKPOOL

“Was never afraid of putting a tackle in for Blackpool no matter what level he played at. The midfield three he played in, in the Premier League suited all three players. He knew his limits and simply won the ball back and passed it to the better players.

CHARLIE ADAM

STOKE CITY

What this man couldn’t do with a football wasn’t worth doing. Lethal from free kicks and lethal with those long shots he tried every time he got chance to. Shame it didn’t work out for Liverpool and him.”

TONI KROOS

GERMANY

“I can remember watching England v Germany at Wembley and he really stood out. I suppose it’s hard not to when you’re playing for Real Madrid week in week out as well as your national team.

JASON PUNCHEON

CRYSTAL PALACE

“I can remember him having some real good performances when on loan at Blackpool. He’s a really direct winger with plenty of pace and is proving his worth in the Premier League with Crystal Palace.”

HARRY DUNN

PADIHAM

“Obviously not on the same kevel as Puncheon but offered much the same style of play. He just pips his mate Alex Murphy to the position. What was impressive about Harry was how easy he made the step up from West Lancs first division much like Westwood attracted attention from higher up.”

JACK SOWERBY

FLEETWOOD

“How could I not include him? Probably the best player I’ve seen play for Gate and currently in and around the Fleetwood Town first team in League One. His goal scoring record for Gate was superb, imagine how many goals he would score in this team!

LAST SEASON

IRLAM 1 SQUIRES GATE 3 Ash Rowley was unlucky not to open the scoring for Gate after 7 minutes. A good run from McKenna down the right hand side and his ball in found Rowley but his shot was deflected out for a corner. the resulting corner for Gate was headed over the bar by Westwood. It would be Irlam who would open the scoring though, a brilliant ball down the left was eventually crossed in. Three Irlam players were waiting in the box with one of them stepping forward to slot the ball past Fletcher. The lively Rowley had the chance to level things up for Gate when the ball was ruled back to him on the edge of the box but his shot went over the bar. Irlam had the next chance this time straight from the goal kick. There ball going over the defences heads but Irlams striker put the ball wide. Gate had a penalty shout after 35 minutes when Ash Rowley was cleared out in the box by the keeper but the ref felt the ball was won much to the surprise of the players on the pitch. Gate would keep the pressure on the home side and equal up the game after 38 minutes. the free kick fired onto Westwood’s head who knocked the ball over to the waiting Cummings. He stretched to poke Gate level. Gate had the chance to make it two with two minutes left but Mckenna’s header was cleared off the line.

Gate started the second half like they’d ended the first. Richards with the free kick after a good run from McKenna but the set piece was saved. McKenna was again involved, the ball played over to him and with the defender missing the header, his follow up shot just clipped the post. Gate took the lead on 67 minutes after Mckennas cross was sliced into his own net by the unfortunate defender. Gate would make it two soon after, Ash Rowley closing down the back past to the defender and the keeper bought Rowley down with a penalty being awarded. Mark Buchan stepped up and coolly slotted past the keeper to score his second in two games and put Gate 3-1 up. The home side had a chance with 6 minutes left but Fletcher kept Gate in the game. Sub Clarke almost had the chance to open his account for the club after good work from Buchan but his shot was tame and the defender cleared the ball. Westwood made a good run from the back and almost found the net after a good exchange of passing with Nathan Trout but Westwood's shot went wide. Gate went on to see the game out and record there first victory of the season. PRICES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY…. In our regular feature, we take a look back at the past week in football history from all around the world.

CELTIC 2 BARCELONA 1

2012

Celtic recorded a famous success against Barcelona with a 2-1 victory over the Spanish giants at Parkhead. Goals from Victor Wanyama and substitute Tony Watt earned Celtic a memorable win as they marked their 125th anniversary in style. Lionel Messi pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but Celtic held on to take all three points and boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

Regardless of the Scottish champions' progress in Europe, the night will live long in the memory of the 60,000 who made their way to Celtic Park on a sodden night. Barca were perhaps fortunate in the 18th minute when midfielder Alex Song, earlier booked for a challenge on Miku, fouled the same player and received no further punishment from referee Bjorn Kuipers. However, the home fans were unconcerned about that when Wanyama gave them a sensational lead. The Catalans had conceded from a set-piece in the Nou Camp and looked equally ropey when the Kenyan rose above Jordi Alba at the back post to bullet in Mulgrew's corner from the right.

Tito Vilanova's side went up a couple of gears and hemmed Celtic in at the edge of their own penalty area and in the 29th minute Iniesta set up Messi and his first-time strike clipped the bar on the way over.

In the 56th minute Messi tried to beat Forster with a left-footed curler from 20 yards but the England squad member was equal to the task and soon made a good save from Sanchez's angled drive after Messi had split open the defence.

Despite all their possession, Barcelona looked vulnerable at the back and Mulgrew might have punished them in the 63rd minute when he had a sight of goal but Bartra managed to block. Song was allowed another foul on Miku to the anger of the Celtic fans, before he was replaced by Cesc Fabregas, with Pique on for Bartra and Watt on for Lustig.

But there was much more drama when Watt escaped the Barca defence and Xavi from Forster's long ball before driving a right-footed shot past Victor Valdes to double Celtic's lead. There was bedlam inside Parkhead which gave way to some nerves when Messi scored from close range in the 90th minute after Forster had parried a strike from Pedro, but it was to be the home side's night, and a famous night at that.

CRUYFF SEES RED

1966

On 6 November 1966, Johan Cruyff earned one of his earliest distinctions, becoming the first player to be sent off in a match for the Dutch national team.

It was only the second national team appearance for Cruyff, who was then just 19 years old and in his third season with Ajax. He had scored in his Netherlands debut, a 2-2 draw with Hungary a month earlier in a European Championship qualifier. His follow-up was a friendly against Czechoslovakia, played before a crowd of 52,000 at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. The Czechs struck first, going up 0-1 with a 27th-minute goal from midfielder Ján Geleta. Dutch forward Sjaak Swart equalized for the hosts in the 51st minute, but they remained level for only three minutes, as midfielder Ivan Hrdlička restored the visitors' lead in the 54th minute. In the 76th minute, with the Netherlands struggling to maintain possession, Cruyff committed a foul that drew the historic ejection from referee Rudi Glöckner. Czechoslovakia held on to win 1-2, while Cruyff's punishment continued far beyond the next match--the KNVB suspended him from international play for almost a year, so that he did not receive his next cap until 13 September 1967. It was a costly suspension. Despite a storied career that included three European Footballer of the Year Awards (1971, 1973, 1974) he made only 48 national team appearances. But he still managed

to score 33 goals for the Netherlands, a tally that ties him for seventh on their current all-time list.
