Tuesday 4th September 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium// Attendance:157 Gate we’re still missing five players from the team coming into this game but welcomed back star striker Ric Seear from injury. The visitors started the first half looking for blood with memories of Gate’s come back in their previous encounter.Brett Dawson had Gate’s first effort of the game but his low shot bobbled into the keepers arms after five minutes. Ric Seear was next to bare down on goal minutes later after Joey Mullen found his run into the box but Droylsden recovered well and tackled him on the edge of the box. Seear went close again when Ryan Charnley found him but his struck wide of the far post. Gate eventually made their chances count when defender Ben Reader scored his second goal of the season. The defender was unmarked at the back post to tap in to give Gate the lead. Droylsden became frustrated as the half went on and looked to resort to first time shots but Gate defender well and stood firm to everything they threw at Gate. before the ball fell to Joey Mullen who fired over.

Ryan Riley and Joey Mullen had Gate’s last chance of the first half but neither could find the target. Ryan Riley first stung the keepers palms

Half time: Squires Gate 1-0 Droylsden The visitors counties to pile on the pressure as the second half got underway. Corners and freekick constantly care into Gate’s box but Gate weren’t tested by the higher league side. Ryan Riley who was one of Gate stand out players went on a mazy run on the hour mark to win a Gate a corner but the visitors cleared before Gate could capitalise. Droylsden looked to play their way into Gate’s box after 65 minutes but Ben Fletcher did well to save one on one. Gate used their experience from back to front to see out the game, even when striker Sefton Gonzales headed wide in the last minute.

AWAY DUGOUT

CRAIG ROBINSON Craig brings with him a wealth of experience throughout the NonLeague pyramid and the respect of everyone at the club; from the Tea Ladies to the Players, to the Supporters to the Volunteers and Directors. On his appointment Craig said “I wasn’t looking for a role in management at present as I still feel I have got at least 1 good season left in me on the pitch, but once I got approached I spoke to the squad and they have given me total support and along with the support of the Directors, I felt it was too good an opportunity to turn down. I’m honoured to be given the chance to manage this great club in my home City with so much potential and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the job and doing my best”.

ven though the roots of City of Liverpool FC can be traced back to initial chats, discussions and meetings that took place in 2008, the actual planning for the formation of the club began in November 2014, when Paul Manning, Peter Furmedge and Martin Jones detailed a timeline which focussed on the intention for City of Liverpool FC to be playing football in August 2016, which gave us a generous 21 months in order to achieve our dream. In early 2015, Stuart Fitzgerald was added to the Executive Committee, and by May 2015 we saw the launch of the club website and social media as interest in the club began to build. As Peter Furmedge was also the resident expert on the legalities of a supporter owned Football Club, he called our very first public meeting for 21st September 2015 in order to legally form the club as a Community Benefit Society, owned by its members. Approximately 50 people turned up and gave their support for us to form the club. Peter had been working alongside Supporters Direct, and confirmation had been received, we were now a supporter owned football club! Initially, we believed that we would start our footballing life with our own ground within the City boundaries, but for a variety of reasons, this proved difficult. As a new club, our application to join the NWCFL had to be in by 31st December 2015, so given the Christmas period, we had roughly 8 weeks to secure a ground share or shelve our plans for another 12 months. We emailed

literally every club or facility that could host Step 6 football within a 35 mile radius and got few replies. None of the other local non-league clubs seemed to want to help us play football! A breakthrough came towards the end of November when Neil Prince put us in touch with Bootle FC. Calls were made and emails sent and literally within a matter of 10 days we had our ground share agreement to play at the Delta Taxis Stadium, Vesty Road, Bootle – what a relief – when no other team offered to help us, Bootle stepped in and took a gamble! With our application to join the NWCFL submitted, and having received confirmation that the league management committee were supporting our bid, we were soon able to secure the services of Simon Burton as 1st Team Manager. He had already advised Runcorn Town that he was resigning at the end of the season and within a matter of days, COLFC had appointed him and the club had just taken another massive step forward. On April 20th 2016, our 3 man delegation travelled down to Wembley to make our case for joining the Hallmark Security League as a newly formed club. We were confident and satisfied that we had made our case and given ourselves the best opportunity to succeed, if indeed there was a space in the league – which was by no means certain at this point. We were told to expect a decision towards the end of May. We heard back from the FA on May 21st via an email stating that we had been unsuccessful with our application and had instead been placed at Step 7 in the Liverpool County Premier League. However, a Hallmark Security League press release stated Northwich Manchester Villa had resigned from the league at the last minute,so this gave us some hope. There was a place available in the league and the FA confirmed we could appeal their original decision. The day of our appeal arrived on June 8th. Paul Manning and Peter Furmedge went down to Wembley again to state our case before an FA 3 man committee. We eventually received an email back later in the day with the outcome.......”The appeal is upheld”.......“COLFC will play at Step 6 in season 2016/17” “This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed by any party” We had the decision that we had worked so long and hard for and the relief was palpable. We had achieved our dream and could now plan for our first ever playing season as a Football Club. City of Liverpool FC was now up and running. Our first competitive match as a club saw us travel to Prestatyn Town on 9th July 2016. Out of an attendance of 271, approximately 150 Partisans made the journey to North Wales to watch Simon Burton and his backroom staff put the first ever City of Liverpool team on show. It was a great day that saw The Purps run out 3-2 winners, with Declan Gregson scoring the first ever competitive goal for the club. We were on our way - and what a journey it would turn out to be. The NWCFL fixtures pitted COLFC away against Chadderton on 6th August in our first ever league match. It took The Purps just 8 minutes to register our first ever league goal, and that honour went to fans favourite Allen Weston, who secured his place in the COLFC History Books. A brace from Captain Chris Dykes saw the club win 3-1 away and start the season off with 3 valuable points. A fantastic crowd of 411 poured into the DTS on 13th August to witness COLFC’s first ever home league game, in what is surely one of the most dramatic matches we have played. After leading 1-0 through an early Danny Dalton goal, our opponents Bacup Borough, who reached the playoffs in the previous season, scored twice in 7 minutes to lead 1-2 with only 3 minutes remaining. The crowd was extremely vocal in their support and in the last minute of the match, Billy Webb equalised for The Purps. The crowd went berserk, we had rescued a point. Hang on, not quite, buoyed by the fans reactions, The Purps went straight on another attack in injury time, and Mike Smith became a hero when he headed a winning goal just seconds after the equaliser. The crowd erupted. We had won 3-2 and in such dramatic fashion. The relationship between fans, players and club was cemented in that moment. Our debut season of 2016/17 was filled with huge excitement, twists and turns, laughter, community spirit, friendships, not to mention some excellent football. To finish our first ever season in Hallmark Security NWCFL Division One with the highest home attendance of 747, the highest average home attendance of 471, the most league goals scored (119), the joint least league goals conceded (45) and the the highest goal difference (+74) is truly remarkable, and is down to Manager Simon Burton, Assistant Manager Tom Spearritt and the coaches, Phil MacDiarmid and Tony Dunne for all their effort and hard work throughout the season, as well as all the players who have pulled on the Purple Jersey. However, for City of Liverpool to win The Reusch Cup, The Macron Cup, Promotion to the Premier Division via the Play Off Final, the Coral Non-League Team of the Year Award, not to mention Simon Burton winning Division One Manager of the Season, and Stephen Longrigg winning Division One Goalkeeper of the Season is just a truly amazing achievement! Especially for a brand new football club in their debut season! We now look forward with great anticipation to the challenge of Step 5 football, and to competing for more honours as we strive to build up our football club and provide the community with a team they can be proud to support.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

ALEX DUFFIN

This Week we interviewed City Of Liverpool Alex Duffin, he been at the club ever seen they started up 3 years ago so we found out what his favoiute moment was they and what he think City of Liverpool will do for the season. We also found out what BPL Players he would love to see at City of Liverpool and much more below Firstly how long have you been at City of Liverpool and what is your most favourite moment there?

Quick mention to Glossop’s ground in the last round was one of the best I have been too.

This is my 3rd year now and 3rd year of the clubs existence. I started following them about 5 games into the season in the first season and have never looked back. Favourite moment has to be either the play off final win against litherland remyca or the Macron cup final win against Barnoldswick but the first season is general was unbelievable with us winning the treble and many memorable games and nights.

Have you improve on squad from last season and who do you think will be a threat to teams?

What are your expectations for the season from what you have seen In your pre-season games and after first few game of the season? With the squad we have put together and the start we have made then I fully expect us to be challenging for the title and winning it and a good run in the vase, with a good chance of winning that too.

Do you think you can improve on your great first year in the league and improve on the 4th place finished? Most definitely. As I say in the previous answer we have put together not just a great first 11 but the squad is unbelievable for a team at this level and fully expect us to be up there come the end of the season.

After an unbeaten start do you think your team has what it takes to keep up all season and challenge for that only promotion spot? Yes, challenging and winning the league is the main target this season and is definitely achievable.

What stadium are you looking forward to visting this season? I’ve heard Silsden have a good setup so looking forward to that in a couple of weeks and looking forward to a return to Whitchurch as it has great memories of our first season when we beat them away to go top of the league for the first time in our history with a Kev McEllin late penalty.

Yes we have definitely improved in all areas of the pitch. Starting with the goalie Ascroft who is brilliant and has been since he joined us last season. Willo has recently joined us at centre half and has been outstanding alongside Danny Dalton. Clair and Holt have come into the midfield and shown good form early on alongside our main stay Kev McEllin and not to mention the two up top, Cairns and McDonald who once they have fully clicked together should fire us to the title. Special mention to Forbes and Peterson up top though too as when they have played have scored and been first class. Best player so far this season has been John McGrath showing great form and his mate on the other side Jack Hazelhurst, our very own Messi, is the best player I have seen since watching the purps, for us or any opposition we have played.

With it being fa cup on Saturday what is your favourite fa cup moment that you have seen or watch I'm your time following football? As an Everton fan it has to be beating Man Utd in the 95 final but that’s a distant memory now and the purps beating Prescot Cables 8 2 last season is easily my favourite FA cup moment but hoping for a few more this season too!

Have you ever been to Gate before if so what was the score? Yes I was here last season when we were cruising 2 0 up only to concede 2 quick goals and nearly ending up losing the game. It was a tough game and expect the same this time around but with a different outcome and a purps win.

If you was a manger of a 5 a side team where you can pick 3 Football legend and 2 City of Liverpool players who would they be and why? My two purps players would be Kev McEllin and Jack Hazelhurst. Kev is Mr dependable and class every week and Hazelhurst is our own little Messi so them two have to be my two picks. In goal would be Neville Southall and don’t even think the reds can argue with that pick. The other two would be my only football idol when I was a kid and that was Gazza who I have always loved and then it’s a fight between the real Ronaldo R9 and Messi but since we have a Messi in the team already I am going with R9

If you could bring any BPL player to City of Liverpool on a free transfer who would it be and why? I’m going to go with Kevin De Bruyne. Kev and Kev in the middle of the park would compliment each other well.

Have you ever been to Wembley old or new if so what is your most memorable moments there and what is the best game you seen? I have been to both old and new. Best memory from my only trip to the old one was Everton beating Man Utd in 95 and my best memory of the new one would have to be beating Man Utd on pens in the FA Cup semi final but it was pointless as Chelsea beat us in the final. My greatest game and memory of the new Wembley will come in May when the purps lift the FA Vase

Who from gate do you think be a biggest threat for city of Liverpool to handle? Seear and Charnley seem the obvious choice due to them getting your goals this season so far but the only one I am worried about is the goalkeeper as he will be in for a busy afternoon so I’m hoping he doesn’t have one of them afternoons when he stops everything but I have belief he will be picking the ball out the net a few times today.

What newly promoted team do you think will be a good challenge in the league this year? Silsden are the obvious choice here, made a good start and sit top of the table at the moment even though they have played more games than anyone. They looked a decent outfit when played us at home a few weeks ago too. I don’t expect litherland remyca or Whitchurch to be challenging come May and think Remyca could be fighting to stay up.

With linnets getting promoted finally last year which team do you think will be up there this season challenge for the title? Runcorn Town and Bootle have been up there last few years too so will be there or there abouts and Silsden could carry on were they left off last year and be challenging. I expected Northwich Vic to be serious contenders after signing a few in the summer including two of our players from last year and they impressed when we played them away a couple of weeks ago but seem to have struggled since playing us. Congleton are the obvious threat with their 100% record and I was impressed with them when they played us at home last season but in reality I expect us to continue our great start to the season and go on to win the league comfortably.

Finally prediction for today's game? 3 0 to the purps. I would pick scorers but never know who will play at the moment especially up top but Cairns or McDonald to get a brace if either of them plays.

LAST TIME IN THE LEAGUE FOR THE PURPS CITY OF LIVERPOOL

4 0 RUNCORN TOWN

MCGRATN 9 43 WILLAIMS 53 HAZLEHURST 65 Friday 3st August 2018/TDP Solicitors Stadium/ATT:649/HT:2-0

Runcorn started the game well, but Liverpool threatened when an error from Sheppard, when he completely missed the ball was covered by keeper Reid who gathered it in the goalmouth. Liverpool took the lead in the 9th minute when John McGrath latched onto a loose ball, cutting in from the right he beat 2 defenders before firing his shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Liverpool controlled the game from the goal with Runcorn being made to work hard to compete. Richards tried a speculative volley that flew well wide of the Liverpool goal but Runcorn’s chances were few and far between. A long throw in from Turner found Reed but his goal bound header was blocked on the goal line before being hacked clear. Thelwell and Cox combined to put Reed through but Liverpool keeper Ascroft was quickly off his line to claim the loose ball. Liverpool created a great opportunity when Peterson and Cairns played through the Runcorn defence but keeper Adam Reid pulled off a magnificent diving save to tip the curled shot from Cairns onto the upright. Runcorn had a lucky escape when Foy’s cross eluded everyone but at the far post Cairns unsighted then had his effort scrambled for a corner. An injury to Carl Rodgers forced a re-shuffle of the Runcorn team, Leon Wright coming on up front and Simon Thelwell moving back into a midfield role. Liverpool immediately responded with their 2nd goal in the 43rd minute, John McGrath side footing a loose ball home inside the 6 yard area as Runcorn were still adjusting themselves to the enforced changes. HALF TIME: CITY of LIVERPOOL 2 – 0 RUNCORN TOWN Runcorn started the 2nd half well, excellent play between McManus and Wright creating an opening for Carberry whose dangerous cross was dealt with by Ascroft. When Runcorn were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Liverpool area, Thelwell had his shot blocked by the defensive wall. An01 BEN ASCRFOT other cross from Carberry was inches off Reed’s out01 ADAM REID stretched boot before going harmlessly for a goal kick. 02 LUKE DENSON 02 LIAM TURNER Liverpool sealed the game with a third goal in the 53rd 03 FRANCIS FOY 03 MICHAEL CARBERRY minute, a clever move by Cairns opened up the Run04 KEVIN MCELLIN corn defence allowing him to slip the ball across goal 04 JACK SHEPPARD where Paul Williams side footed it into the bottom cor05 DANIEL DALTON 05 MARCUS JAMES ner of the net. 06 PAUL WILIAMS 06 CARL RODGERS When Runcorn gave the ball away in the Liverpool half 07 JOSEPH HOLT of the pitch, Liverpool got a 4th goal, McGrath broke 07 PAUL MCMANUS 08 JACK HAZLEHURST quickly down the right before finding the impressive 08 SHAUN WEAVER Jack Hazlehurst who scored the simplest of goals in the 09 THOMAS PETERSON 09 MARK REED 65th minute. 10 CRAIG CARINS To their credit Runcorn never gave up seeking a conso10 SIMON THELWELL 11 JOHN MCGRATH lation goal but tonight the spoils were fully deserved by 11 RYAN COX Liverpool. Wright tried his luck with a well hit volley from 25 yards but the ball rose high over the crossbar. 12 DAVID FORBES Runcorn keeper Reid brought off a superb save to deny 12 DANIEL JARRETT Williams free kick. 14 KARL CLAIR 14 LEON WRIGHT In the final minutes Carberry saw his deflected shot 15 CHRISTOPHER LESTER 15 MARK MCGREGOR well saved by Ascroft. 16 ADAM PEPPER 17 JAMES MCDONALD

The visitors came into this game the form team in the league winning five or their last six games. That showed after just seven minutes when they opened the scoring. The impressive Jack Hazlehurst reacted quickest after Ben Fletcher did well to save the original shot, tapping in to give Liverpool the lead. Gate could have leveled the game after thirteen minutes with a great opportunity. Ryan Riley looked to make space in the box but at the key moment scuffed his shot straight into the keepers arms. Five minutes later and Riley had another great chance. Scott Harries and Jake Higham did well to win the ball back before Riley couldn't Scott Harries cross at the near post. Liverpool would punish Gate's two great missed chances when they extended their lead. One of Liverpool's form men going into this game, Dean Shacklock who had scored three in his last four games, would curl in a superb individual effort to beat Ben Fletcher from outside the box. A clearly disappointed management team made two changes at half time to shake up the midfield after not being happy with what they'd seen. Dan Gary replaced Joey Mullen and Issac Sinclair replaced Jake Higham to make his debut. The changes would make a difference as Gate would grab a goal back fourteen minutes into the second half. Ryan Riley did well to recover after going down under a challenge from the keeper, he jumped back up before squaring the ball to Scott Harries who fired past Langley in goal. The momentum was all with Gate who looked the better side in the second half, the visitors perhaps thinking the game was won at half time would be punished in the sixty-seventh minute again by Gate. The ball fell loose in the box from the freekick and with the visitors unable to clear, Dean Ing was in the right place at the right time to tap in past Langley. The previously mentioned momentum was now clear to see as Gate looked to win the game. That goal would come with eighteen minutes of the game left and what a goal it was! The ball fell to Max Rothwell and from 30 yards out he took aim first time and watched the ball sail into the top corner to give Gate the lead for the first time in the game. Debutante Isaac Sinclair almost grabbed himself a goal minutes after Gate took the lead when the ball fell to him from Ryan Riley but his first time shot was blocked by the visitors and cleared. Gate would go on to see out the game as the visitors pilled on the pressure late on for an impressive win and impressive second half performance

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid THERE’S a saying at NLP Towers – every day is Non-League Day! But Saturday, October 13 is actually proper Non-League Day as football comes together to celebrate all that is great about this level of the game. Now, anyone reading this will no doubt be familiar with NLD but hopefully there are new fans too only just discovering what Non-League football is all about. Conceived by QPR fan James Doe back in 2010, he wanted to spread the word after attending a Non-League game himself. Since then, once a season on an international break, fans are encouraged to get out and watch their local club. Within five minutes of many front doors in the country, there is a decent game of football being played every weekend. Whether you are a fan of a club that has been relegated into Non-League or follow the team on your doorstep, we all have reasons for watching. Often people are surprised at the quality of players – something that shouldn’t be so accepted with the big successes of recent years like Jamie Vardy. And there are so many great tales to be told. How about Dave Diaper at Sholing who has just completed 1,000 games at the club he took over in the Hampshire Premier League and took to Wembley glory in the FA Vase? As well as managing the team, he’s also helped run the club and led them up the Pyramid. Or what about The NLP’s current Fan of the Year, James Beardwell? A die-hard Witham Town fan, he entertains us every week with his videos from games and passion for his team. Pop star Olly Murs even appeared in one of James’ vlogs recently when Witham took on Coggeshall Town, the Bostik club Murs is co-owner of. NLD isn’t about dumping the top level of the game, but about realising the football fix can also be found further down. Over the years we’ve seen all sorts of whacky ways to mark the occasion from fancy dress to ferret racing. Clubs will often offer free or reduced entry but Bungay Town even once handed out free mushrooms on the gate upon entry. This year will be no different as new fans try a different experience and mix with those of us who already love Non-League football. Part of the charm is the intimate atmosphere, the closeness to the players and, of course, the value for money. And this is a great chance for clubs to open their doors and show off. Prostate Cancer UK are once again heavily involved, with National League sponsors Vanarama looking to raise a sizeable sum for the charity. We’ll be promoting events in The NLP over the coming weeks but make sure you keep an eye out to see how clubs near you are planning to celebrate Non-League Day. And if you have an idea yourself, why not let the club know? After all, getting involved is what makes Non-League so special. Just ask us at The NLP!
