Saturday 13th January 2018// Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 85 Gate started the game all guns blazing with the majority of the play all in Abbey Hey’s half. The front four of Riley, Rothwell, Pett and Harries all adding that extra bit of quality which has seen Gate go three games without a win. Gate were almost caught when on a rare break forward from the visitors, a cross into the box almost caught out Ben Fletcher in goal, luckily for Gate the ball only found the crossbar. Get went close on ten minutes when Dave Rossall who was also making his first start at The Brian Addison Stadium since rejoining the club looked to find Ryan Riley. Riley though was just caught offside with the goal at his mercy. The visitors would take the lead ten minutes before half time, some poor defending from the corner the downfall for Gate. The ball in found the unmarked Andy Smith who headed into the far corner past Fletcher.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 0-1 Abbey Hey

Gate who already looked full of confidence seemed buoyed by the equaliser and looked to push forward to take the lead. Andy Richards beat his man in the box before taking aim only to be denied by the keeper, the resulting corner was cleared by the visitors. What then followed was three great chances for Gate, all three just needing a touch for Gate to take the lead. First Dean Ing’s cross was put out for a corner before Tarren Moxon’s cross back in from the resulting corner was blocked. Scott Harries then put in a teasing ball, but nobody in Blue could get a touch. Gate’s pressure would be rewarded on 69 minutes when they’d take the lead. Scott Harries again in the right place at the right time to tap in after Dean Ing’s shot looked to be being cleared off the line. Gate’s dominance would be rewarded again 5 minutes from full time when Gary Pett extended their lead. He lined up one of his trademark free kicks from the edge of the box firing past the keeper right into the top corner.

Sadly Gate who were clearly still celebrating the third goal would conGate started the second half much with the same intensity of the first half. cede straight from kick off. The visitors going straight down the other end The feeling around the ground was always that Andy Clarkson’s men would to grab a goal back all be it to late. get back into the game but would have to be patient.More clever football on the edge of the Abbey Hey box after 59 minutes saw Gate go close again. The ball was laid back to Dean Ing who looked for a man at the back post, but his cross was too heavy. Gate would keep the pressure on and just a minute later equalised. Gary Pett’s header was saved by the keeper before Scott Harries reacted quickest to tap in whilst falling over.

4 2 SQURES GATE HARRIES 6 ROTHWELL 21

Saturday 27th January 2018 //Ruby Civil Arena // Attendance:217 Gate came into the game unchanged from there last game against Abbey Hey and being one of only five games on in the league, looked to move up the table. The game didn't start the best for Gate who went behind after just two minutes. Striker Spencer Jordan was in the right place a the right time unmarked on the penalty spot as he slid in from a cross from the right hand side past Fletcher. Down the other end Gate had the chance to pull a goal back from a clever freekick routine. Scott Harries played the ball short to Ryan Riley but nobody could meet his cross to the back post. Gate would equalise soon after. Max Rothwell opening his account for the season when he met captain Mike Hall's corner to head past keeper Burgess. Ben Fletcher had to be on hand after 15 minutes to deny the homeside before the corner was cleared. It wouldn't be long before The Storks got another chance, this time taking the lead again. On 19 minutes Padiham hit Gate on the counter, striker Danny Boyle finishing off the quick break forward for his first of the game. As quick as the homeside has restored their lead, Gate had again equalised. Max Rothwell again in the right place to score from almost the same spot as his first. Max had Scott Harries to thank as the midfielder put the ball on a plate for his teammate. Harries went past Hoskin like he wasn't there, before squaring across goal to the back post where Rothwell waited to fire in. Gate could have then gone on to take the lead four minutes later through Rothwell again. Ryan Riley's cross found Dean Ing who's shot hit Rothwell who couldn't compose himself to shoot and the ball was cleared. It's no exaggeration to say that this first half was the epitome of end to end with no better example than when the homeside restored their lead again. Striker Danny Boyle catching Gate keeper Ben Fletcher out when he fired a freekick straight past him, Fletcher seemingly expecting a cross into the box. After the game Andy Clarkson felt frustrated at his sides performance and it was clear to see why. Gate's attacking players were unplayable in the first half yet at the back his side were left open.

On 29 minutes that Gate's full attacking potential was clear to see with Rothwell, Harries, Riley and Pett all linking up with fast one touch football, the latter though fired wide from the move. Gate's plans were thrown out of the window with five minutes left to play when Ryan Riley picked up a knock. Thank fully for the midfielder, playing his second game of the season after a pre season injury, it didn't look too serious as he walked off to be replaced by Joey Mullen.

HALF TIME: Padiham 3-2 Squires Gate

Gate's plans took a further hit after half time when star striker Gary Pett had to be substituted. Pett had suffered a clash of heads in the first half and was suffering with double vision. Padiham had the first chance of the second when they had protests for a penalty waves away. The freekick was blocked by Gate before a Padiham played went down in the box, only for the referee to wave away his protests. Gate themselves had a great chance from a freekick minutes later. The freekick was cleared before Scott Harries had a great chance to score. He came inches away after beating two Padiham defenders but lost his footing at the last minute before getting the shot away. The momentum was with Gate in the last 20 minutes as Clarkson's men looked for the equaliser but just couldn't convert the chances created. The homeside would break Gate's hearts with five minutes left of the game. A freekick was sent into the back post to find defender Mark Ayres who finished well past Fletcher. After the game manager Andy Clarkson was left frustrated by his teams performance defensively in the first half "Im sure it was a great game for the neutrals particularly that first half 3-2 at half time. It was a day for us where we said to keep tight for the first 20 and what do we do, go and concede after a couple of minutes. 1 to 11 today we were not good enough defensively."

THE BOSS

Simon Burton Simon is an FA Qualified football coach who joins us after 7 seasons of success at NWCFL Premier Division side Runcorn Town, leading them out of the West Cheshire League and into the North West Counties Football League in his first season and following that up with an immediate promotion up and out of the North West Counties 1st Divison and into the Premier Division Simon's team almost made it a hat-trick of promotions, with an excruciatingly close 2nd place finish in 2011/12. Under Simon's management Runcorn Town only finished outside the top 5 places in the Premier Division once and went on to have another second placed finish and during his time as Manager he has enjoyed great success in FA competitions making several appearances in the last 32 of the FA Vase as well as reaching the last 16 in 2012/13 season. The crowning moment came in 2014/15 with a 0-1 away victory over the Northern Conference leaders, Barrow AFC in the FA Cup 2nd qualifying round. Still only aged 38, Simon is very ambitious for himself and City of Liverpool FC and matches exactly the club's outlook on the short / medium and long term goals for the club.

BREIF HISTORY As Peter Furmedge was also the resident expert on the legalities of a supporter owned Football Club, he called our very first public meeting for 21st September 2015 in order to legally form the club as a Community Benefit Society, owned by its members. Approximately 50 people turned up and gave their support for us to form the club. Peter had been working alongside Supporters Direct, and confirmation had been received, we were now a supporter owned football club! Initially, we believed that we would start our footballing life with our own ground within the City boundaries, but for a variety of reasons, this proved difficult. As a new club, our application to join the NWCFL had to be in by 31st December 2015, so given the Christmas period, we had roughly 8 weeks to secure a ground share or shelve our plans for another 12 months. We emailed literally every club or facility that could host Step 6 football within a 35 mile radius and got few replies. None of the other local non-league clubs seemed to want to help us play football! A breakthrough came towards the end of November when Neil Prince put us in touch with Bootle FC. Calls were made and emails sent and literally within a matter of 10 days we had our ground share agreement to play at the Delta Taxis Stadium, Vesty Road, Bootle – what a relief – when no other team offered to help us, Bootle stepped in and took a gamble! With our application to join the NWCFL submitted, and having received confirmation that the league management committee were supporting our bid, we were soon able to secure the services of Simon Burton as 1st Team Manager. He had already advised Runcorn Town that he was resigning at the end of the season and within a matter of days, COLFC had appointed him and the club had just taken another massive step forward. We were on our way - and what a journey it would turn out to be. The NWCFL fixtures pitted COLFC away against Chadderton on 6th August in our first ever league match. It took The Purps just 8 minutes to register our first ever league goal, and that honour went to fans favourite Allen Weston, who secured his place in the COLFC History Books. A brace from Captain Chris Dykes saw the club win 3-1 away and start the season off with 3 valuable points. A fantastic crowd of 411 poured into the DTS on 13th August to witness COLFC’s first ever home league game, in what is surely one of the most dramatic matches we have played. After leading 1-0 through an early Danny Dalton goal, our opponents Bacup Borough, who reached the playoffs in the previous season, scored twice in 7 minutes to lead 1-2 with only 3 minutes remaining. The crowd was extremely vocal in their support and in the last minute of the match, Billy Webb equalised for The Purps. The crowd went berserk, we had rescued a point. Hang on, not quite, buoyed by the fans reactions, The Purps went straight on another attack in injury time, and Mike Smith became a hero when he headed a winning goal just seconds after the equaliser. The crowd erupted. We had won 3-2 and in such dramatic fashion. The relationship between fans, players and club was cemented in that moment. Our debut season of 2016/17 was filled with huge excitement, twists and turns, laughter, community spirit, friendships, not to mention some excellent football. To finish our first ever season in Hallmark Security NWCFL Division One with the highest home attendance of 747, the highest average home attendance of 471, the most league goals scored (119), the joint least league goals conceded (45) and the the highest goal difference (+74) is truly remarkable, and is down to Manager Simon Burton, Assistant Manager Tom Spearritt and the coaches, Phil MacDiarmid and Tony Dunne for all their effort and hard work throughout the season, as well as all the players who have pulled on the Purple Jersey. However, for City of Liverpool to win The Reusch Cup, The Macron Cup, Promotion to the Premier Division via the Play Off Final, the Coral Non-League Team of the Year Award, not to mention Simon Burton winning Division One Manager of the Season, and Stephen Longrigg winning Division One Goalkeeper of the Season is just a truly amazing achievement! Especially for a brand new football club in their debut season! We now look forward with great anticipation to the challenge of Step 5 football, and to competing for more honours as we strive to build up our football club and provide the community with

MACTH PREVIEW BY MARK ASHMORE Mark Ashmore gives us his preview on today’s game where we found out the last time out for gate where Gate lost to Padiham. We also found out a bit more about the away team and much much more. A first ever meeting at The Brian Addison Stadium between these two sides, with both teams hoping the lack of games recently won't impact the game. Last time out Last time Gate took to the field was back at the end of January where Padiham ended Gate's unbeaten start to 2018. Gate started the game in the worst possible fashion going behind after just two minutes. Spencer Jordan was there to capitalise on some poor defending from Gate to open the scoring. It wouldn't take Gate long to reply, when Max Rothwell equalised on 6 minutes. From captain Mike Hall's corner, Max rose highest to head past the keeper and equalise with his first of the afternoon. The homeside would take the lead again 18 minutes when Danny Boyle caught out keeper Ben Fletcher. Fletcher, expecting a cross to come in, was caught out when Boyle fired the freekick straight past him. Max would again strike for Gate to level the game on 21 minutes, After good work from Scott Harries to take the ball past the keeper, Max was there at the back post to tap in to level the game. The Storks would strike again before half time through Boyle again to take the lead. After the break and as much as Gate tried, they couldn't convert the chances created. The homeside would put the game out of sight late on when Mark Ayers steered the ball in unmarked from a freekick. The Away Team COLFC come into this game 7th in the league having won five for their last six games. This season they've won twelve of their twenty two games, losing six and drawing four games. Liverpool's last game was another win at the back end of January away at Congleton Town. Kevin McEllin opened the scoring after 13 minutes before Dean Shacklock doubled their lead just before half time. Emini Adegbenro grabbed a goal back ten minutes before full time, but it was too late to mount a comeback. The form table for City of Liverpool looks like WLWWWW placing them 2nd in the form table. The loss came against Bootle whilst the wins have come against Congleton Town, Ashton Athletic, West Didsbury & Chorlton, Charnock Richard and Maine Road. Gate will have to wary of former Bootle forward Thomas Peterson who has found the net 13 times in 24 games. Dean Shacklock has found the net three times in his last four games including a double against West Didsbury & Chorlton. The Last Time We Met The two sides met for the first ever time back in October when a 36th minute Mark Buchan penalty was the difference between the two sides. The win came in the middle of a six game unbeaten run for Manager Andy Clarkson's side who showed a resilient determined side coming under fire from the home side. Tyler Atack went close late on to extending Gate's lead after coming on as a sub but couldn't convert. Head to Head This will be just the second time these two sides have met after our first every meeting earlier in the season following COLFC's promotion last season. Gate currently lead the way with one win from our first encounter. CITY OF LIVERPOOL Mcellin 13 Shacklock 39

Saturday 30th January 2018/Richborough Estates Stadium /Attendance: 151 Liverpool started the stronger and had a couple of early chances with Shacklock coming close, but Danny Eccles was equal to it. Robinson then had a chance but blasted his effort over the bar. The visitors opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Shacklock played a perfect cross into the box and McEllin blasted home from the edge of the box, 1-0 Liverpool. It was all Liverpool in the opening quarter with the Bears struggling to get into the game. Bears first chance fell to Declan Fletcher, who picked up Rick Peters cross but could only find the side netting, then Ollie Ford fed Emini Adegbenro whose shot pulled off a great save from McCall. It was the same a few minutes later, with the keeper blocking Adegbenro again. Bears were improving and getting more of the ball, with Adegbenro looking lively, his next effort just whistling over the bar. Liverpool continued to push and Eccles had to be at his best to tip one effort over the bar. Bears should have levelled it up on 38 minutes, Steve Foster crossed into the box, Ford ran onto the ball, beat the offside trap but blasted over with the goal at his mercy. This was to prove a costly as just a minute later Liverpool doubled their lead. Peterson and Shacklock combined well and the latter fired into the top corner, 2-0. Half Time Congleton Town 0-2 City of Liverpool Bears came out looking much hungrier and had much of the play. Foster, Ford and Adegbenro all had shots blocked in the first five minutes. Mark Groom then went close from a corner, but his header was straight at the keeper. Liverpool also created chances and Noon hit one from a tight angle which Eccles saved well. Bears made a double sub, bringing on Liam Moran and Billy Hasler-Cregg for Foster and Ford as they looked for a way back into the game. Immediately Hasler-Cregg caused problems down the wing with his pace and trickery.Anthony Griffith, Fletcher and Adegbenro then combined well but 01 DANIEL ECCLES 01 GRAEME MCCALL the final shot was too high. 02 THOMAS STEPHENS

With ten minutes remaining the Bears broke through. Initially a Bears attack was cleared by the Liverpool defence, but Groom won it back and played a neat ball into the box, Adegbenro collected and scored with a shot that went in off the underside of the bar, 1-2. The Bears now went all out for the equaliser. Luke Edwards had a shot over the bar and several corners were cleared by the visitors defence. John Main replaced Adegbenro for the last five minutes but despite the possession the equaliser would not come. The final whistle brought a close to proceedings and the Bears could count themselves very unlucky not to have gained a point for their efforts. Full time Congleton Town 1-2 City of Liverpool

NEW SIGNINGS FOR GATE

Bright future as local youngsters sign on... Manager Andy Clarkson has added to his squad ahead of this weekends home game against City of Liverpool FC. Joining the club are Isaac Sinclair, George Atkinson and Lewis Turner who all join from Orange Soccer joining Finley Clarkson who is already signed on. All with previous academy experience, the three have recently been selected for Lancashire Under 18's alongside full time football with Orange Soccer. Also joining the club is Jack Hargreaves. Jack signs from Andy's Clifton Rangers side and has been training with the first team for a couple of weeks. On his new signings Clarkson said: "On a personal note im really pleased to sign these young players who are developing really well in their young football careers. I've always said if your good enough your old enough and they all are starting to knock on the door of adult football. As long as they keeper their feet on the ground and train really hard they all have a great chance of playing football at a really high standard. There are a number of other Under 18 lads at both Clifton and Orange Soccer who will be joining us in training in the near future."

NWCFL NEWS Although we are getting used to the increasingly tedious monotony of adverse weather wrecking a fixture card, this weekend was the worst of the season so far, with just three games surviving and two of those were on artificial surfaces. The one Premier Division fixture certainly provided plenty of goal action, with Widnes further consolidating their second place in the table behind leaders Runcorn Linnets after a 7-1 home win over bottom of the table Barnton. Given the final score, it's a little surprising to note that the game was goalless until the 38th minute when George Lomax opened the scoring, and Ben Hodkinson doubled the advantage just before half time. Christopher Lomax then made it 3-0 four minutes into the second half, although Barnton kept going and a Jack Irlam penalty midway through the second half gave them some hope. But further goals in the last 15 minutes from Kevin Towey, two from Jack Banister and one in the last minute from Stuart Cook wrapped up a convincing win. In the First Division, the only game of the weekend played on grass was the eye catching clash between top of the table Silsden AFC and fourth placed Prestwich Heys, which ended in a 2-2 draw. It always had the look of keenly contested game and that proved to be the case, with Arley Barnes giving Silsden a 24th minute lead which was cancelled out by a Heys equaliser from Alfie Belcher eight minutes later. Midway through the second half Daniel White put Heys ahead from the penalty spot, but Silsden rescued a point when manager Danny Forrest came off the bench and secured a draw for his side with a second goal 14 minutes from time. In the other game in Division One, Whitchurch Alport moved into second place after a 5-1 win at St Helens Town. A close range finish and a 25 yard rocket from Ben Mills put Alport two up, and Hovik Nerseryan added a third on the stroke of half time to put Alport in control. However, a strong start to the second half from Town saw Matthew Smith pull a goal back, and it wasn't until the final six minutes that Alport secured the points. First, Mills completed his hat trick with a near post header and then skipper Simon Everall beat the offside trap to round off a good afternoon with the fifth goal in the final minute. Alport are now 14 points behind Silsden at the top, but have four games in hand. THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THERE’S NO RULE IN FOOTBALL

2000

On 14 February 2000, Kuwait set a world record by beating Bhutan 20-0 in an Asian Cup qualifier. Even though they won their first qualifying match 6-1 over Turkmenistan, Kuwait had shown no indication that they were capable of producing such a scoreline. But Bhutan were not the stoutest competition, having recently ended a self-imposed exile from international football to join FIFA earlier that year (they lost their opening game 3-0 to Nepal). Kuwait took a few minutes to get going, with Jassem Al-Houwaidi scoring the opener in the 17th minute. But that one opened the floodgates, as Bashir Abdullah scored the second in the 20th minute--it was the first of his eight goals on the day (20', 24', 38', 45' (pen.), 47', 50', 59', 89'). Al-Houwaidi added another four (36' (pen.), 39', 52' (pen.), 57') and Ahmed Al-Mutairi got a hat-trick (21', 51', 63'). The other four were scored by Fawwaz Bakhit (31'), Nohair Al-Shammari (21'), Issam Sakeen (65'), and Ahmed Jassem (77' (pen.)). The scoreline beat the previous international record of 13-0, which was set about three weeks earlier when China beat Guam 19-0 in the same qualifying series. But it was beaten when Australia beat Tonga 22-0 in 2001

THE LANSDOWNE ROAD RIOT

1995

On 15 February 1995, a riot erupted at a friendly between Ireland and England in Dublin. A subsequent report laid the blame on English supporters and Irish authorities. The supporters in question were members of Combat 18, an English neo-Nazi white supremacist group with a history of violence including football hooliganism. They wasted little time in turning the friendly ugly, chanting "sieg heil" and giving Nazi salutes during the playing of the national anthems. After a disallowed English goal, the away supporters in the higher stands ripped up benches and threw them down onto the home fans in the lower stands, prompting the referee to halt the game and send the teams off the pitch. Ireland manager Jack Charlton, a former English international, left to chants of "Judas." The violence escalated, with rioting in the stands as the referee decided to cancel the remainder of the match. Most fans were evacuated, but those that remained clashed with police. A total of twenty people were injured. Afterward, an inquiry found the English supporters, and Combat 18 in particular, responsible for the outbreak of violence. But the Irish authorities also shared some of the blame. They had been alerted before the match to the presence of Combat 18,

THE CELEBRATION WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROPIATE HERE, TOO On 16 February 1964, Bebeto, star of the 1994 World Cup and creator of a famous goal celebration, was born in the Brazilian city of Salvador. A forward, whose real name is José Roberto Gama de Oliveira, he spent the majority of his career alternating between the Brazilian and Spanish top flights, including lengthy spells with Flamengo (1983-88, 1996), Vasco da Gama (1989-92, 2001-02), and Deportiva la Coruña (1992-96). Along the way, he won league titles in 1983 and 1989, as well as the 1995 Copa del Rey. He earned his first cap for Brazil in 1985 and made 75 appearances through 1998, scoring a total of 39 goals. During Brazil's winning campaign in the 1994 World Cup, he played every minute and scored three goals. After his third, which put his team up 2-1 against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals (Brazil went on to win 3-2), he honored his newborn son by making a rocking motion with his arms. It eventually became a staple goal celebration. After his retirement in 2002, he briefly managed America FC in Rio de Janeiro from 2009 to 2010, then switched to politics with his 2010 election to Brazil's legislative assembly.

CONGLETON TOWN 3 SQUIRES GATE 2 .Gate were missing four first team players, so handed a debut to Andy Speight in goal as well as a first league start for Ryan Tanser. Gate struggled to get into the game early on and the home side would make them pay. James Kirby curling the ball past Speight in net after three minutes after he was allowed too much space. The home side could have had two goals in quick succession. Gate captain Andy Richards heading the ball off the line and over the bar. The home side heading wide from the following corner. Gate could have been back in the game on six minutes. The returning Anthony Stayte linking up well with top goal scorer Ric Seear but Stayte’s touch was just a little too heavy and the home keeper did well to collect. It seemed to take Gate at least ten minutes to get into the game. They had some good possession in midfield but struggled to create clear chances. The more the game went on the better gate got though and got their reward for the turn around. Joe Noblet delivering the corner into the near post, the ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Ric Seear who bundle the ball into the back of the net. As quick as Gate scored one they got back into the game and scored another! Ryan Tanser picking up the ball down the right hand side to drive forward. He looked up as he entered the box before picking his spot low into the bottom corner The second half started just as bad as the first for Gate. The homeside levelling the game just one minute into the second half. Gate caught starting the game slowly again, Nathan Haynes grabbing the goal.Ryan Tanser had the chance to put Gate ahead twice within the space of a minute. First Ric Seear did well to cut the ball back to Tanser on the penalty spot but he had more time than he thought and fired over. He then bought out the best of the home keeper. Tanser broke away from the defence and tried to slot the ball under the keeper’s legs but the keeper did very well to save with his feet. Gate’s best chance came on 61 minutes. First the home sides keeper tipped the ball over the bar from Joe Noblet’s shot from the edge of the box. Then from the follow up corner fell to Alex Mckendrick’s feet in the box, but he couldn’t sort his feet out quick enough to get a shot away. The home side would win the game on 72 minutes. Striker Declan Fletcher left unmarked at the back post to take a touch and fire home to win the game for Congleton.
