DANNY

PENSWICK we welcome Colne to the Royal British Legion stadium in the MEN Cup. Colne are flying high at the top of the league and look to be right in contention for promotion this season. When we played them earlier on this season I was very impressed by what I saw and the way they played the game.

I am looking for a reaction from the lads who were there and those that missed out. Whilst the scoreline didn't reflect the game, two sloppy goals after 3 and 48 minutes cost us, and as I said after the game to the lads we cant afford to give good teams a goal head start.

Hard work and togetherness are going to Since that game, we've been looking to be key today, as we need to match Colplay a more open and exciting brand of nes intensity and desire before we can football, which has come with its own start playing our game. What we do challenges, as some of our results show. without the ball will impact on the outA recent good run of form has been de- come probably more than what we do railed slightly due to the weather and with it. postponements. With almost 4 weeks Hopefully we can keep our recent good since our last home game the lads are home form up and cause what would looking forward to getting back on the pitch and doing what we do best, playing defiantly be an upset in beating the league leaders. Let hope it’s a cracker football. and we can get ourselves in the hat for Today The squad is looking stronger and the next round! we welcome back a few absentees after Up the Gate last weekends disappointing defeat to West Didsbury.

IN TODAYS PROGRAMME We speak to Colne FC marketer Ben Metcalfe about Colne’s attacking threats, which 3 PL players he would love to see at Colne, and some general football questions. We take a trip back to 1995 to see how Squires Gate were doing that year. Our new look ‘HEAD TO HEAD’ gives an in depth look at our opponents’ record against Gate.

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.

Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship) Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.

Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.

Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.

Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.

Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship) Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.

Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship) Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.

Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship) Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.

Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship) One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.

Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.

Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.

Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship) Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates and is very good at holding the ball up.

Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.

Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White) Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.

Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.

Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship) Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

NOBLETT 10 10 HESSION (RILEY 73) ROWLEY 11 11 GAUL Darwen came into the game having changed their manager for the second time this season. Gate made just the one change from Saturday's 3-2 win against Padiham with goal hero Ash Rowley coming in for Josh Kay who dropped to the bench.

Squires Gate 3-3 Bacup & Rossendale Borough Sat 21st December, 2013 Gate were determined to pull away from the relegation zone, with the visit of Bacup who were below them in the table, and the game looked to be going to plan, with Andy Richards switched from defence to the right flank, and along with Charlie Russell, making inroads into the visitors area, making openings for striker Jack Sowerby, and Billy McKenna, who had the Bacup keeper Haican Burtoni, kept busy. First he had to race out to block efforts from Sowerby, and Russell. On 20 mins, Sowerby raced onto a through ball from Seydou Bamba, and blasted a shot, beating defenders and goalkeeper, from 25 yards. Then within mins, Billy McKenna, raced into the penalty area unmarked, but tried to walk it around the keeper, and was dispossessed. Then the keeper and defender Jonathan Hemp had a mix-up, on the edge of the Pics by Albert Cooper area, McKenna made amends when he raced in, picked up the loose ball and shot into empty net. The home side looked to be in control, and capable of scoring many more gaols, but a laps of concentration on the home right, allowed Gino Mancini, to score on 35 mins, and instead of having a comfortable lead at the interval, the teams were separated by the single goal. The talk during the half time break, must have been ringing in their ears, as within a min. of the restart, Seydou Bamba, went down the left, and crossed for Jack Sowerby to slot home a left foot shot for Gate’s 3rd goal. Despite looking the better side, with several opportunities, it was a needless foul on the touchline near the corner flag, which allowed Bacup to get back into the game. From the free kick, a scramble in the goal area saw Seydou Bamba score an own goal on 68 mins. Gate pushed forward and Jordyn Fitton replaced Billy McKenna, with only the advancing keeper to beat, his shot was just wide. Bacup increased their attacking and Simon Thompson took his chance and made it three all. Best chance in the closing stages was, Jack Sowerby picked up a long ball out of defence and raced into the danger area chased by defenders, but what looked to be a certain hat trick goal for Gate’s leading marksman, saw his shot saved by the keeper and pushed out to be safely cleared. This game should go down as a draw, from what should have been a victory, with Gate looking more like the team that beat Maine Road, in their last victory.

We spoke to Colne marketer Ben Metcalfe and asked him a few questions

After a great start to this season, you are currently favourites to win the league.

Do you think you have what it takes to last throughout the season? Whilst we sit at the top of the league, it’s difficult to say! Whilst we all hope we can do it, and if we play to the potential that we have seen so far this season, then why not. If you look at the league throughout the last 3 or 4 years, a lot happens after Christmas! It will be close though. Which Colne players have caused the most threat to opposition so far this season. Who have you been impressed with? We have a lot of players that have the ability to cause damage, but the one player than consistently creates chances is Spencer Jordan, however in the centre of the park, our very own man of steel, Michael Morrison continues to impress. What has been your most memorable moment/game within your time at Colne? Going back quite a few years, but the FA Vase semi-final against AFC Sudbury, It was our record attendance, 1,700+ but the weather was atrocious. We lost, but it is a game I will remember Which teams have surprised you so far? Alsager, and I know that’s a surprise, but I cannot believe they are in the position they are in. It was a real tough game against them, we won 2-1, but we knew we had been in a game!

If you were to pick 2 Colne players and 3 Premier League legends in a 5 a side team. Who would you pick? I’d pick our GK Thommo because his shot stopping is second to none, and Danny Boyle because he scores when he wants! My 3 PL legends would be Ruud Gullit, Gianfranco Zola and Sammi Hyypia. If you could sign any 3 current PL players on a free transfer, who would it be and why? David Silva – He has the fastest feet known to man, Jamie Vardy – He can play at any level, as we all know & Cesc Fabregas, just to see if he could do it on a Tuesday night in Colne. If you get promoted, which sides are you looking forward to visiting next season? None! They are all too far away! Be good to visit Glossop again though. (if they don’t go up) Have you ever been to Wembley on any occasion? What would be your dream scenario there? Never been to Wembley. My football league team is Blackburn and I always said the first time I go to

KAY 10 10 ROWLEY (RILEY 75) POIZER(70) EVANGELINGS 11 11 HIGHAM Report by Mark Ashmore. Picture by Albert Cooper.

After having four games postponed due to the recent bad weather Gate we relieved to receive the good new that todays game at West Didsbury and Chorlton was on. Gate’s players were eager to get back playing football but faced a tough test in West Didsbury. In the reverse fixture at School Road, Gate was comfortably beaten 4-0 though the score line could have easily been more. Gate were without a few key players from their last game with Noblett and Stayte in particular a big miss. Gate made the worst possible start to the game and conceded the opening goal after 3 minutes. Perhaps a lack of match sharpness could be to blame for the first goal as it came too easily for Gates liking. The ball played over the top of Ferguson found the run of Shaw who easily finished past Fletcher’s near post. Gate first chance

falling to him on the edge of the box we quickly turned and got a low shot away but the keeper did well to get down low to save. Gate came into the game more after the 25-minute mark but struggled to cope with pitch conditions and constant West pressure. Gate had claims for a penalty turned down on the 40-minute mark. Penswick’s free kick from just outside the box looked to strike a hand in the wall but the referee waved away Gate protests as if it were nothing. Gates best chance was soon after but Nathan Trout could only direct his header wide of the post. Much like the first half Gate didn’t start as they meant to go on and conceded anther goal after 48 minutes. West launched an attack from Gates attack and although Gate managed to get men back West still found a way through. An easy ball played across the face of goal allowed Ash Woods an easy tap in front of goal. Gate had the chance to grab a goal back after 50 minutes, some clever build up play in midfield led to Mckenna finding the ball but he couldn’t keep his shot down. First Penswick then Buchan had chances

who knocked the ball back into the box to find Buchan but his header was wide of the post. West had two chances to score but both one on one’s went wide of the net. The home side would make it 3 soon after. Ash Woods with the goal after a good spell of pressure from Gate, the home side caught them on the break to grab his second of the game. Gate perhaps created the better chances throughout the game but just couldn’t find the finish lot of the play deserved. After the game manager Danny Penswick shared his thoughts “ As a manager you can accept being beaten by a better team but today wasn’t the case. We lost the game in the opening 3 minutes of both halves and cannot afford to give team 2 goals and expect to come away with something”

Colne F.C. were formed in Jan 1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of Dave Blacklock who is now the chairman. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non league football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich. Season 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. We completed the double by winning the Division Two Trophy 1 – 0 over Great Harwood. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, we progressed all the way to the semi-finals, (via an incredible 1 – 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon!) before getting beat over two legs 4 – 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed, attendances started to rise as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the famous RED ARMY was formed. Season 2014-15 proved to be the best ever in terms of league placing, with Colne finishing a creditable fourth. No doubt the management team have ambitions to improve on that in 2015-16. With all this going on, due to the fantastic efforts of a strong and loyal band of followers and officials including the resurrected “ Red Army “ and the continued support from our main sponsors XLCR Vehicle

COLNE 4-0 SQUIRES GATE Sat 14 Dec, 2013 A trip to Colne is tough task any day, with their slopping pitch, but with strong winds battering the hills it was going to be more difficult. Before the game started Gate lost the services of Sam Farrow in midfield He turned the ankle injured the previous Sat, and had to take a seat as a spectator, with Jack Hindle taking his place. Playing up hill to start with, and the wind that usually helps by blowing up hill, was inconsistent, changing direction, but the rain was persistent, and the blasts making it hard to control the ball. The home side put the visitors to the test, and went ahead after only 4 mins. A cross from the Colne left, was not cleared and went across goal, for Christopher Anderson, to ghost in from the back post to score. There was no let up as Gate tried to puss up into attack, and Jamie McQuillan, picked the ball up in midfield to race towards goal, only to be brought down, as he approached the penalty area, but the free kick was blocked and cleared. Then on 12 mins. Colne went further ahead, when Jason Hart jinxed in from the left and shot into the bottom corner for the second goal. The conditions were not for good skilful football, and we didn't see any on display. Before the half hour, a long ball from the home defence bounced into Gate's area, and Mark Coyne was the first to react, and scored Colne's third goal on 28mins. The feeling of some of the spectators was that Gate might come out and pull some goals back with the advantage of the slope. But despite the visitors pushed forward and attacking, most of the efforts went over the crossbar, and when Gate got a free kick Andy Richards, looked to have come up with a goal, beating the five man wall, but Christopher Thompson, pulled off a great save diving to his left and pushing the ball over the bar. Keeping the home side chances in the second half down to a handful, of efforts, which Ben Fletcher dealt with comfortably, but with a clearance down the home sides right, where Nathan Bond, crossed for Micky Woodvine, to score into the bottom corner sealed Gates fifth defeat in a row, and leaves them in 20th position only 2 points above the relegation position.

COLNE 3-0 SQUIRES GATE Tue 23 Sep, 2014 Colne sat three points and five places above Squires Gate with 16 points from 10 games. It was the home side who started the brighter having plenty of possession early on looking confident on the ball. But it was Gate who had the first chance, an early cross in from Alex Murphy on the right almost caught out Colne keeper Thompson but he recovered well to tip the ball over the bar. Gates defence was cut in half by a pass through the middle of them which found Chris Anderson to give the home side the lead. Gate could have equalised soon after but the home sides goal keeper got down well to deny Hothersall at his feet. Gate were restricted to mostly long shots during the first half but couldn't capitalise from any of them with the home side first to very ball. The home side could have made it two late on but quick thinking from Chris Anderson on the line after the ball rebounded of the bar saved Gate. Into the second half and it looked to be much like the first, the home side first to every ball not letting Gate time on the ball. Gate were made to pay on the 51st minute when the ball was fired across the 6 yard box to find an unmarked Tom Berwick at the back post to tap in the ball. This goal seemed to get to Gate and fired them up. It wasn't until the 60th minute that Gate really got going. Gate had many chances to get a goal back but Colnes defence stood tall and strong to deny them. Despite the efforts of subs Dickinson and Dunn get just couldn't find a way through. The night would get worse for Squires Gate as the home side added a third. The kick straight from the goal keeper came all the way though to the onrushing Danny Boyle who finished past keeper Ben Fletcher.

SQUIRES GATE 0-0 COLNE Tue 18 Nov, 2014 It was a very tight and nervy first half with both sides having chances. Gate could have been ahead after 10 minutes But the Colne keeper got down well to keep out Harry Dunn. Colne replied and could have gone ahead but Danny Penswick was back on the line to save what would have been a sure goal. Gets last real chance of the half fell to Alex Murphy but his drive from the edge if the box could only find the post. Gate finished the half showing a and impressive defensive display to see the and through to half time. Gate started the second half on top and had Chances to go ahead through Murphy and Penswick but neither could finish. It was down the other end where Gate will be counting there blessings Colne coming inches from scoring but no one could react quick enough as the ball trickled along the line and was cleared. The next 10 minutes saw Gate keeper Ben Fletcher pull off a string of fabulous saves as Colne piled on the pressure. Fletcher well and truly keeping Gate in the game. After Gate had soaked up the Colne pressure they had another chance to go ahead but the Colne defender just got his head on the cross to put the ball out for a corner. Unfortunately Gate couldn't capitalise from the corner. Substitute Sean Holmes had a chance to win the game late in but his shot roll straight into the gloves of the Colne goal keeper.

SQUIRES GATE 1-4 COLNE

Tue 18 Sep 2015 Chance early on for Gate, Richards forward from full back unleashed a shot, which just grazed the crossbar. Good early pressure from Gate saw Billy McKenna in on goal but his shot dropped wide of the post. Gate didn’t allow Colne to get going in the open exchanges and should have capitalised on the chances they had. Jack Cook was the next for Gate to have a chance at goal after the ball fell to him from the corner but his shot thundered over the bar. Colnes first chance fell to prolific striker Jason Hart. He latched onto a long ball forward but he was cut out and the ball cleared by Brett Ferguson before he could get his shot away. Chance for Gate followed first through Cummings whose cross couldn’t find anyone and McKenna whose shot was pulled wide. After a good spell of possession for the away side the ball was played forward to there right back. He played the ball into Spencer Jordan but his shot fell wide of the post. Gate came back with an attack of their own after good possession of the ball, Richards sent the ball into the box but no one was at the back post to meet the cross. A lapse in concentration from Gates backline opened the scoring for Colne. Fletcher running past the ball allowed Jason Hart to nip past him and roll the ball into the back of the net and open the scoring. Colne scored soon after in a quick fire double. No one reacted quick enough from the corner and Young headed the ball in to put Gate 2-0 up. Colne had turned on the style after going 2-0 up and made it three soon after. Ben Allen found himself one-on-one with Colquhoun who Allen beat to smash the ball past Fletcher. Gate tried to get themselves back into the game late on but nobody could meet Penswick’s ball at the back post. Gate started the second half a lot better and after good early pressure almost grabbed a goal back. Billy Mckenna crossing the ball in from the corner but nobody could reach the ball, which was put out for another corner. The follow up corner was played back to Cook on the edge of the box but his shot was well saved. Colne had a chance to make it 4 but Jason Hart dragged the ball wide of the post. It was a nervy start to the half from Colne but Gate couldn’t capitalise on this to make it count. Brett Ferguson forward from left back had had a rare chance but his shot went well over the bar. Ash Rowley made a good impact after coming off the bench, a couple of step over on the edge of the box before picking his spot and firing into the bottom corner. Gate had claims of a penalty turned down after a foul in the box, the ref allowed play on and Westwood hit the ball over. The ref didn’t decided to pull the play back even though no advantage was gained. Billy Mckenna almost caught Colnes goalkeeper out with his first time shot but his shot grazed the crossbar much to Colnes delight. Ben Allen had a chance for Colne but his first time shot was fired over the bar. Gate had a late chance but Nathan Trout headed wide from the corner. Colne had the last chance of the game and made it count. Dom Craig of the bench curled the ball into the top corner with the last kick of the game.

SOAKING SUNDAY SEE’S GATE BACK TO WINNING SQUIRES GATE 7-1 THORNTON BLUES Gate started brightly with Jack Robinson creating two chances from Brogan Grundy who couldn't find the finish. Grundy then scored the opener, a fine individual finish which ends a two game goal drought. He then turned provider after a precise pass from Dimitri Jackson, Grundy flicked the ball into the path of Josh Dolby-Armstrong who scored his first of the game. Immediately after Dolby-Armstrong scored his second with a fine run from wide into space, scoring a fine one on one chance. The 4th goal wasn't long in coming, with a shot places into the bottom corner from Lucas Miller. Jackson continued to dictate play, with the next chance falling to Oscar Dugdale who forced the keeper into a fine save. The 5th goal for Gate was created down the right hand side with Luca Stefani who crossed for McKenzie. Marazuk-Webster who took two touches to fire home from close range. Thornton got on the scoresheet with a goal just before the break after Harry Ahern had made a fine save, the striker scoring the rebound. Marazuk-Webster was first on the scoresheet in the second half for his second of the game. The game was controlled by Gate from start to finish with fantastic passing football. Although there wasn't many goals in the second there was plenty chances wasted. Final goal of the game went to the outstanding Dugdale, a corner was taken short and he fired the effort into the far side netting. Man of the Match: Oscar Dugdale JULY Sun 5

Colne 3-5 Newton Aycliffe (AET)

It’s fair to say that Colne know how to score goals. Starting the season at home to Winsford, they were one of the favourites to win the league this season and they showed exactly why as they went on to win 6-2. By the end of August, they had scored 27 goals in 6 games, scoring more than 5 goals in 4 of them. Lethal.

After a bad start to October, Colne bounced back as they beat AFC Blackpool, Congleton Town and AFC Darwen scoring 4 goals in each game.

Danny Boyle and Jason Hart have bagged a total of 34 goals in all competitions between them this season, however neither of them could find the net in the game Their dreams of Wembley were with Padiham mid October as the soon ended in mid September as game ended 0-0. they suffered their first defeat of Wins against Ashton Athletic, the season away to Consett. Rochdale Town and Athersley After that defeat to Consett, Recreation saw the reds progress Colne bounced back to their best in cup and vase competitions and and won their next 4 games and keep their place at the top of the then were eventually beaten 4-0 league. by Cammell Laird.

With postponements and bad weather, they played their first game of the month last Saturday and suffered a 5-3 defeat at home to Newton Aycliffe, which ended their Vase run.

Fourteen games across four different competitions survived the weather and provided the usual range of talking points at the weekend. Three FA Vase Second Round ties involving our clubs were postponed and rearranged for next week, and there were mixed fortunes for the three remaining clubs who were in action. Runcorn Town kept up their good record in the competition with a 3-0 home win over Garforth Town, James McShane scoring twice, and Alsager Town were within seconds of securing their place in the next round in a dramatic game at AFC Mansfield. An 89th minute goal from Jordan Johnson appeared to have clinched victory for the Bullets, but the home side equalised on the stroke of full time, and with extra time failing to separate the sides, they meet in the replay at Wood Park on Tuesday evening. Colne unfortunately went out of the competition, but only after an epic tie that ended with them losing 5-3 after extra time against Newton Aycliffe at the XLCR Stadium. The game was a thriller from start to finish, with two penalties for each side, Colne twice being two goals behind before levelling at 3-3 with a Chris Anderson goal in the 84th minute, and then Jason Hart hit the post in stoppage time for Colne, before the Northern League side clinched victory in extra time. There was one tie in the Reusch First Division Cup 2nd Round, and Holker Old Boys recorded their second win under new boss Scott Redhead, this time by 2-0 at home to Ashton Town. Goals from Guy Heffernan and Philip Coombe in the opening 22 minutes were decisive for the Stags. Four games survived in the Premier Division, and Bootle moved level on points with Colne at the top of the table thanks to a 2-1 win over Maine Road at the Delta Taxis Stadium, second half goals from James McGrane and Joel Powell earning the points for the Bucks. Second half goals from Paul Foy and a Jamie Henders penalty earned Cammell Laird 1907 a 2-1 win at AFC Blackpool, and two second half goals from Ash Woods helped West Didsbury & Chorlton to a 3-0 win at home to Squires Gate. In the other game Winsford United took an early lead against Silsden through a Sam Cook goal, but a second half equaliser from Kevin Ryan ensured the Cobbydalers made the long trip home with a point.
