The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “FA VASE TIE AGASINT CONGLETON WIN COULD KCIK OUR SEASON OFF Today we welcome Congleton in the FA Vase. Congleton have had a solid if not spectacular start and I'm sure they'll be looking to kick start a good run of form today. In Ian Street they have an experienced and knowledgeable manager in charge. He's been around the league for a while and his teams are always organised and effective so I'm expecting a tough test today. After a tough opening few weeks of the season as a club I think our last 2 performances have given everyone a lift. We've looked sharper and hungrier and that's key to where we need to be as a team. Jack Williams finally looks to be finding his feet up front and I'm looking forward to seeing him hit top gear as the weeks progress. Let's hope we see the best of Jack and the Gate today. PICTURE BY ALBERT COOPER

GATE GAVE IT ALL BUT UNBEATEN RUCNORN KEPT WINING STREAK GOING .Squires Gate suffered yet another defeat at home to Runcorn Town but should have come away with at least a point from the promotion chasing side. Runcorn came into the game unbeaten and had won all four of their opening games. Striker Craig Cairns had scored 11 goals so far this season, including five against Northwich Victoria on Wednesday night. Gate could have opened the scoring as soon as three minutes into the game. Striker Jack Williams found space in the box, but fired his shot straight at a defender. His strike partner Tarren Moxon then had a chance but fired his shot over the bar, after the visitors had done similar. It would be Gate that would open the scoring after 17 minutes and it was fully deserved. Striker Jack Williams rounding Runcorn Town keeper Andy Metcalf, leaving him on the floor before tapping into the empty net. The visitors then had two golden chances to equalise before finally finding the break through. First a corner was headed over before a freekick was well saved by Ben Fletcher with his feet. Runcorn would then equalise after the resulting corner from that save. Simon Thelwell missed from the corner and was walking back so was left unmarked, striker Mark Reed was played through and found the retreating Thelwell for an easy tap in at the back post. Chances for both sides saw the half end in the draw. Gary Pett fired a powerful freekick that was blocked on 40 minutes before Kieran Evans for Runcorn forced Ben Fletcher into another good save with his feet. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-1 Runcorn Town Gate could have taken the lead for a second time in the game virtually from kick off at the start of the second half. But an early corner for Gate has headed up and easily collected by the Runcorn keeper. On 52 minutes both teams again had the chance to take the lead. First Nick Greenall's shot was blocked then Runcorn attacked down the other end and rattled Gate's crossbar. Jack Williams, looking for his second of the game, had a great chance on 63 minutes when manager Danny Penswick played him in on goal. He turned on the edge of the box but his chipped shot could only find the roof of the net. As the game looked to be heading for a draw, the visitors would grab the winning goal. Harsh on Gate whose performance deserved at least a point. Striker Mark Reed allowed too much room on the PICTURE BY ALBERT COOPER edge of Gate's box to turn and shoot past Fletcher.

LAST TEN SEASONS:

THE BOSS IAN STREET Ian Was Appoint Congleton Town back in may 2017 he told the NWCFL this in a Statement I needed a new challenge after four seasons at 1874 Northwich and along with former Witton Albion manager and record appearance holding player Brian Pritchard, plus former Oldham Athletic and current academy A Licensed coach at Port Vale FC Paul Johnson, we aim to bring back better and more enjoyable times at the club after a few disappointing seasons recently. 'At the moment we are putting together a squad of players that we can work with in pre-season and hopefully be a lot stronger come the start of the next campaign. The feedback from potential targets has been very encouraging so far. Every club believes that they will have a good season and we are no different, there are

BREIF HISTORY Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938.Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City.

LAST TIME OUT

WIDNES 2 CONGLETON TOWN 1 Monday 4th September 2017/NWCFL Premier Division/ /Attendance: Both teams created early chances but it was Widnes who went in front on 19 minutes when Chris Lomax turned in the area, cut inside and fired under Jones in the Bears goal. Bears were level on 25 when Adegbenro was given time and space in the box, he raced in and riffled a shot into the back of the net. Both teams continued to push and chances fell to both sides but without goals. Half Time: Widnes 1-1 Congleton Town Widnes were first out of the blocks in the second half and were ahead inside two minutes. Lomax again was the scorer with a low shot past Jones. Bears now tried to get back into the game and Fletcher and Carey both had chances. Widnes were awarded a penalty on on 72 minutes, but Jones made a great save from the Lomax kick. Despite Bears late pressure Widnes clung on to claim all three points.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END CHRIS ROWLEY We caught up with Congleton Town fan Chris Rowley and we interviewed him to found out what his expectations for the season, what 3 premier League Players he would bring to the club.

What are your expectations for the the new season after your 16th place finished last season? Keeping in mind that this is a completely different squad to the one that finished last season, but knowing the gaffers track record…. realistically, I’d say a top 10 finish with a strong second half as the lads get to know each other’s games better

This season will been different to last because? It’s a new beginning for the club…. new Management Team & new Players have revitalised peoples interest in the club.

Who has been ur most memorable player/moment of all time? I’d have to say the unbeaten run during the 2015/16 season…. Think it was x13 games in all and we won most of them.

What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? 1874 Northwich – always a tasty game.

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this Season Northwich Victoria – not been for years and looking forward to catching up with some of the old CTFC boys that moved there pre-season.

What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last season? Runcorn Town – finished 3rd last season and off like a train in this one.

Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Jack Williams has started the season well.

Fans from other club don't know that Congleton? Congleton is home to the now world famous “Hibernator Breakfast Challenge” at the Bear Grills Café (check it out on YouTube). 8 Bacon, 8 Sausages, 4 Hash Browns, 4 Fried Eggs, a 4 egg cheese omelette, 4 waffles, 4 toast, 4 fried bread, 4 pieces of black pudding, 2 ladles of beans, 2 ladles of tomatoes, chips, mushrooms and a 2 pint milkshake. Finish it in under an hour and collect £100 in prize money. Haven’t tried it myself… don’t want to either! Perhaps the Squires Gate Ultras are up for the challenge?

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

Depends if we’re picking up the wage

bill but assuming they’re playing out of the goodness of their hearts I’ll take. Gabriel from Man City just so I could tell the kids that Jesus had played football at Booth Street. Jack Butland – great ‘keeper - should be England’s No1 (sorry AJ!). Santi Cazorla – injured I know but hopefully will return. A fantastic player to watch and looks like he’d be a good laugh off the pitch.

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? No so I’ll say 0-0.

If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Congleton players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? OK so I’ll say: Andy Jones in nets (CTFC) – we’ve just signed Jack Butland on a free so he’ll need game time. Dec Fletcher (CTFC) – should bag us a few goals. Thierry Henry – to do Fletchers running and could possibly add to the goals tally Eric Cantona – love him or loathe him…. Got to admire him. Tony Adams (Capt.) – for me, England’s best centre half (reminds me of myself!) – should keep the oppositions score down.

Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Yeah – twice with Port Vale FC (my second team) and once to watch England. Realistically, I’d say leading out Congleton to face Barcelona in the Champions League Final, I’d name myself on the bench, come on in the 80th minute (can’t manage more than 10 these days), take the captains armband and score the winning goal having nut-megged Messi seven times in the build-up.

where do u predicted your finish this year and do you think it higher than last? Let’s go 9th so yeah, higher than last year’s 16th.

Prediction for today's game? Kick off at 3pm signalled by a man with a whistle followed by….. Seriously, I’ll go 4-0 to the Bears… Mini to score a brace and Carey & Fletch to notch.

NWCFL NEWS Alongside league games, five of our clubs were in action in The Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round, four of them against clubs from leagues above, and each had their own story to tell. Pride of place goes to Ashton Athletic, who collected yet another EvoStik League scalp in a cup competition with their 2-1 win over Bamber Bridge at Brocstedes Park. A goal on the stroke of half time from Joel Brownhill gave the Yellows the lead, and the advantage was doubled 18 minutes from time by Josh Nicolson. Bamber Bridge pulled a goal back late on, but Athletic held out to clinch a place in the next round. Abbey Hey and 1874 Northwich both earned midweek replays following late equalisers in their respective game, but Abbey's result was all the more remarkable, given that they were three goals down after 24 minutes at home to Altrincham. A header from Andy Smith and a close range finish from Lee Wilshaw gave Abbey a lifeline and made it 2-3 at half time and the comeback was completed five minutes from time when Sam Freakes blasted home a penalty to earn his side a 3-3 draw.1874 Northwich to twice came from behind to eventually draw 2-2 at Mossley, with Sam Hind on target twice for the Greens, the crucial second goal arriving two minutes from time. However, it was a story of last minute heartbreak for both Barnoldswick Town and City of Liverpool, who both went out of the competition after conceding goals with virtually the last kick of the game. City of Liverpool's Friday night clash at home to Nantwich Town was watched by an impressive crowd of 1024, and after conceding a first half opener, the Purples levelled through Luke Denson in the 56th minute. But just as the game appeared to be heading for a replay, Sean Cooke struck a 90th minute winner for the visitors to seal a 2-1 win. For Barnoldswick Town, conceding a last minute goal at Albion Sports was all the more painful given that goals from Joel Melia and Danny Boyle had them back on level terms after being two goals down. In fact, Boyle's 89th minute goal seemed certain to have earned Barlick a draw, but straight from the kick off the Northern Counties East League side went up the park and scored what to be the decisive goal in a 3-2 win. Elsewhere, there was plenty of league action to enjoy, and the Premier Division is now led by Runcorn Town, who have the only 100% record after goals from Simon Thelwell and Mark Reed earned then a 2-1 win at Squires Gate. Charnock Richard are in second place, with two penalties from Nathan Hirst and a last minute goal from Matthew Davidson seeing them through to a 3-1 win at Hanley Town. Bootle are third after five different players got on the scoresheet in their 5-2 home win over Widnes, ahead of Winsford United on goal difference after the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Barnton. Runcorn Linnets were the highest scorers of the day, with Stuart Wellstead scoring a hat trick and Michael Simpson adding two more in their 6-1 win over Padiham at the Millbank Linnets Stadium. Matthew Morgan, Jack Poxon and David Brown were on target for Maine Road in the 3-1 win over AFC Darwen, and two goals from Joseph Wittington - the second of which arrived in the 90th minute - helped AFC Liverpool earn a 3-3 draw at Congleton Town.Northwich Victoria and Burscough shared a 1-1 draw at Townfield. In the First Division, Silsden and Whitchurch Alport continue to set the pace at the top, with Silsden maintaining their 100% record with a 4-1 win at St Helens Town. Daniel Illingworth, Mark Trueman, Joseph Gaughan and Christopher Wademan were on target for the Cobbydalers after they had gone behind to a Luke Edwards goal for Town. First half goals from Luke Walley and Mike Blundell set Whitchurch Alport on the way to a 2-1 win over Carlisle City at Yockings Park, and Litherland REMYCA are in third place after their 2-0 win at Daisy Hill, with Anthony Barnes and William Doherty on target for Remy. Alsager Town's 1-0 win over Atherton LR, courtesy of Michael Lennon's goal on the half hour, moved them into fourth place, ahead of Prestwich Heys who lost 1-0 at home to AFC Blackpool, with Conah Bishop on target for the visitors. Bacup Borough occupy the final play off place, although a Josh Maldon penalty sent them to a 1-0 defeat at home to Cammell Laird 1907. There was also a single goal win for the visitors at Little Wembley, with Kieron Ball striking the only goal of the game for Abbey Hulton United at Nelson, and in contrast George Blackwell , Nathan Neequaye and Ed Driver all scored twice in New Mills' 7-2 win over Holker Old Boys at Church Lane. FC Oswestry Town stay rooted to the bottom of the table after losing 5-1 at home to Stockport Town, Ashley Stott and Jamie Hinchcliffe both scoring twice for Town, and Richard Whyatt was also a two goal marksman for Cheadle Town in the 3-1 win at Sandbach United. Two goals in two minutes from Louis Downs and Thomas Lowe earned Eccleshall a 2-2 draw at home to Chadderton, after being two down just after half time.

LAST TIME IN THE VASE FOR GATE SQUIRES GATE

ALSAGER TOWN

2

Saturday 10th September 2016

An under strength Gate team exited the FA Vase at the first attempt after going down to a 2-1 defeat away at recently relegated Alsager Town. Gates first chance of the game came after four minutes when the pacey Tanser was sent clear down the left hand side. He squared the ball to Alex McKendrick in the box, but his turn and shot was easily saved. Ryan Tanser then had a chance of his own as he was sent in behind again but he was all alone and dragged his shot wide. Gate did well to defend an Alsager freekick on fourteen minutes. Alsager were a tall physical side and offered a threat from set pieces throughout the day. Manager Danny Penswick cleared the ball before Mckendrick completed the job. Gate again found themselves in behind the Alsager backline on fifteen minutes but Ryan Riley's cross was too hard to find strike partner Tanser. Gate would be made to pay for their early misses on seventeen minutes. Gate's clearance came back of an Alsager player and took a lucky bounce into the path of Josh Glover who scored low past Fletcher. After the game manager Danny Penswick described how he was still trying to work out how his team hadn't taken their chances and it was clear to see where he was coming from. Gate having several freekicks and corners but struggling to find the touch they needed. Gate had calls for a penalty waved away on 35 minutes for a foul in the box. The linesman flagged for what looked like an easy decision but instead indicated a freekick, nowhere near where the foul happened. The freekick was easily cleared by the home side. Gates best chances came at the end of the half. First Ryan Tanser skimmed the crossbar after he found his way through. Then three minutes later Alex McKendrick was a whisper away from heading his second goal in two games but couldn't get a strong enough touch.

The second half was much the same for Gate who had plenty of chances and again dominated the game. Jamie Gibson did well to keep the ball in on the right hand side after five minutes but the cross towards Ryan Tanser was easily gathered by the keeper. Ben Fletcher's only save of the second half came on 59 minutes. What looked like a brilliant save was actually fairly routine as Fletcher dived late to smother the bobbling shot. Gate would finally find the break through on 72 minutes. Paul Carroll taking the quick free kick after

GROUNDHOP DIARIES

DAVID JOHN PREECE

We interviewed groundhoppers all over the UK and around the world and asked them what it was that encouraged them to start their footballing adventures and why they enjoy travelling to non league grounds all over the world. When we last interviewed David, he is on 63 grounds - which is a great achievement in itself but he has sure added to that tally over the previous campaign so we caught up with him during pre season and asked him about his recent adventures. Firstly , what encouraged you to start your football adventures? I started groundhopping on a regular basis as I have always had a love of football grounds and enjoyed the away days with Shrewsbury Town.

What is the earliest memory of going to football as a kid? The 1996 Auto Windscreens Shields Trophy. As a kid I lived in London so it was difficult to get to Shrewsbury on a regular basis, so when they played at Wembley my parents and I would always go along. We lost that game if I remember correctly.

Do you remember your first game? No, it was a game at Brentford from what I've been told, as Brentford was nearby and I think my dad got the tickets for free .

Who was your biggest footballing idol as a kid? David Beckham, I wanted to be him!

What do you enjoy the most about non league football? The down to earth nature, everyone is friendly at this level and you can see where your money is going.

How many grounds have you visited up to now? 93 that I can think of

With it Fa vase game what is your favourite fa vase game you been to? Penrith vs Atherton Colleries, as I have a soft spot for Colleries and the game was a good one.

FACTFILE: Favourite match meal: Pie (Meat & Potato)

Any favourite grounds in particular?

Shrewsbury's Gay Meadow What made them different to other non league grounds? I spent a lot of time on the terraces of the Gay Meadow and have a lot of fond memories of the old girl. Have you visited any obscure grounds? One in Benalmadena, Spain. It was that obscure that I can't remember who played there! Have you ever watched any games abroad? I've seen Malaga at La Rosaleda Have you ever witnessed any memorable/historic momens for a team (play off wins, cup wins, etc)? I've seen Shrewsbury promoted on a number of occasions. Also the Great Escape we performed in 2000, as we beat Exeter 2-1 to doom Chester to the Conference. The best game you have ever seen live? As above, Shrewsbury 2-1 Exeter The worst game you have ever seen live? Preston North End vs Birmingham City on the 14th of February 2017. My uncle is a Birmingham City supporter and dragged me to this match, City were dire. Any grounds that you are planning on visiting over the next couple of months? I'm looking forward to seeing Hayes & Yeading at their new ground as I watched alot of Hayes when growing up.

Favourite ground: Currently? Bacup Borough, the surrounding area is gorgeous. All time favourite? The Gay Meadow, that ground will never be replaced. Footballing Idol: It used to be David Beckham as a kid, but if I had to pick an idol now I'd have to say Zlatan, he's a great player to watch. Favourite drink:

Real Ale, I'll drink anything. First football shirt owned: Probably a Shrewsbury Town shirt, I probably still have it! Favourite year in football: 2015, as it's the year I started my Groundhopping blog.

SQUIRES GATE

Saturday 26th August 2016

.Gate struggled to get into the game early on and the home side would make them pay. James Kirby curling the ball past Speight in net after three minutes after he was allowed too much space. The home side could have had two goals in quick succession. Gate captain Andy Richards heading the ball off the line and over the bar. The home side heading wide from the following corner. Gate could have been back in the game on six minutes. The returning Anthony Stayte linking up well with top goal scorer Ric Seear but Stayte’s touch was just a little too heavy and the home keeper did well to collect. It seemed to take Gate at least ten minutes to get into the game. They had some good possession in midfield but struggled to create clear chances. The more the game went on the better gate got though and got their reward for the turn around. Joe Noblet delivering the corner into the near post, the ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Ric Seear who bundle the ball into the back of the net. As quick as Gate scored one they got back into the game and scored another! Ryan Tanser picking up the ball down the right hand side to drive forward. He looked up as he entered the box before picking his spot low into the bottom corner.

The second half started just as bad as the first for Gate. The homeside levelling the game just one minute into the second half. Gate caught starting the game slowly again, Nathan Haynes grabbing the goal. Ryan Tanser had the chance to put Gate ahead twice within the space of a minute. First Ric Seear did well to cut the ball back to Tanser on the penalty spot but he had more time than he thought and fired over. He then bought out the best of the home keeper. Tanser broke away from the defence and tried to slot the ball under the keeper’s legs but the keeper did very well to save with his feet. Gate’s best chance came on 61 minutes. First the home sides keeper tipped the ball over the bar from Joe Noblet’s shot from the edge of the box. Then from the follow up corner fell to Alex McKendrick’s feet in the box, but he couldn’t sort his feet out quick enough to get a shot

away. The home side would win the game on 72 minutes. Striker Declan Fletcher left unmarked at the back post to take a touch and fire home to win the game for Congleton.

CONGLETON TOWN

1

Saturday 8th April 2017

Squires Gate left it till the death on Saturday afternoon to pick up a valuable point in their end of season run in. Congleton Town had taken the lead after 10 minutes but a 97th minute equaliser from 17 year old sub Conor Smith denied the visitors all three points. Gate started the game well and had the chance to take the lead after four minutes. Max Rothwell cut inside and almost intercepted a back pass in front of the keeper but the Bears stopper did well to be Maxto the ball. Up the other end the visitors went close, showing early on what a tight end to end game this would be. The visitors would take the lead in fortunate fashion after eight minutes. A clear looking foul on Paul Alexander waved away by the referee allowed Congleton to cross into the box where Declan Fletcher headed into Joe Griffith in goal, with the ball falling into the net, another foul not given. Gate had Joe Griffith to thank after sixteen minutes when he got down low to his left to save a low drive. The ball was given away up front and the visitors broke with pace but Griffith did well to save. The Bears would test Gate again after thirty-three minutes but they ired wide from the edge of the box. Gate would end the first half the better of the two sides. Tarren Moxon showed a great burst of pace to get away from the defence but his cut back was easily cleared with nobody in the box for Gate. Gate then had a goal disallowed two minutes before half time. Dave Rossall got up highest to meet the corner but the Congleton defender did well to head the ball off the line and behind for a corner. The second half saw a much better display from Gate who became more attacking as the game went on searching for that equaliser. A succession of free kicks for Gate came to nothing as first Paul Alexander's effort hit the wall then Joe Noblet's follow up shot was well over. Then the visitors easily cleared from Noblet's freekick into the box then forced Griffith into a good save down the other end after countering. Another freekick was played in by Paul Alexander and he found his defensive partner Dave Rossall but his header could only find the hands of the keeper. Gate changed up their formation with sub Jordan Casey coming on and looked better for it in the last 20 minutes. Charlie Waters, now on the opposite flank, did well to beat his man easily, his pass into the box found Joe Noblet but his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. Tarren Moxon was sent through over the top with 13 minutes left and after doing the hard work of getting away from his man he fired wide. of the goal. Late into the game Gate were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty after Dave Rossall, up from a corner, was fouled on the edge of the box with a knee high tackle. But like throughout the game and for both teams, the referee waved away what looked like another clear decision. Gate didn't give up though and in the 97th minute grabbed a deserved equaliser. Step up Conor Smith just two weeks after his 17th birthday to fire into the goal after Joe Noblet's shot deflected into his path.

Q&A WITH… ALEX COLUQHOUN what teams are you looking forward to facing this season? don't particularly look forward to a certain team, I enjoy playing each team and I'm looking forward to Saturday.

Which teams do you think will be tough this season? I think every team is the league gives you a tough fixture. We haven't started great, which is highlighting how good the teams are when you don't do the basics well. With it being FA Vase weekend what is your favourite fa vase game u played in or watch ? I'm going to have to go with a watched performance, think it was 2015-2016 season and Morpeth town won it at Wembley. Guy who scored and got man of the match I used to work with as a football coach at Gateshead college. He was convinced by the manager who was another coach at Gateshead to stay on 1 more year, he's 45 and scored at Wembley to win the Vase. Was so pleased for him.

What encouraged you to start playing football? Rugby was the first sport I played, my dad used to play so think he wanted me to follow in his footsteps, but all my mates at primary school were playing footy for school and for an outside club, so I went and joined them and it's been some journey since

Who was your footballing idol as a kid? Shearer. Newcastle fan, who else could it be.

If you werent a Midfielder , which other position would you love to play in, Have you ever played in other positions during your time? When I first started playing football I used to be a striker, I was so so quick. If I had that pace again, I'd go up top. I think I've played nearly every position at some point since I started play. Some I never want to play again!

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game? At the top level it's the money. How they can spend that kind of money and earn that kind of money is beyond me. Imagine what 1 week of Kyle walkers £200,000 would do to a club at this level. The biggest challenge at this level is probably finding consistency amongst officials. Jesus we've had some shockers. Last Saturday the ref scheduled a water break and blamed each team when we neither of us waned one in 16 degree heat!! Should of made him put a quid in the kitty.

If you could pick one BPL player for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why? I'd probably say hazard, although I'm playing right back at the moment and he plays on the left so maybe fabregas. Hazard would just be chucking hot dogs at me all game. I love watching technically gifted players, they make it look so easy and these two are two of the best present players in the prem.

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? My grandad took me and my sister to a Newcastle game when we were younger and he was telling me all about good this Alan shearer was. Think I was about 6. He got a straight red card and we got thumped 5-1. Cheers grandad.

Favourite ground you have ever played at? Probably at deepdale. About 10 people there though. I enjoy playing against the teams in the league who get big crowds on, good atmosphere, their fans giving you abuse. It's class, some people don't like it. Drives me on a bit.

What is your goal target for the season ? I managed to pick up 8 goals before Christmas last season in west lancs. Then the second half of the season fizzled out for me really. Think I'm yet to score a goal for gate! I've scored a penalty for gate in a shootout, but that's it. I don't have a target as such, i do want to get on the scoresheet at some point this year and just get as many as I can. Think I'm only a goal behind Buchs and Taz, I can catch them.

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why? Shearer- idol as a kid, premier league all time scorer, he'd be a bloody handful. , Scholes- this was tough, just edges Gerrard for me. Ability speaks for itself, when fergie rings him up to come out of retirement. Massive blow for England when he packed in. Rio- Another tough one, just edges JT, he's an athlete, comfortable on the ball, good leader. That's some spine by the way!!

What the first thing you do before any match? I usually go back into the changing rooms before most of the lads, get my tape, shinnies etc sorted and get myself focused.

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Get round the lads, getting ourselves focused and pumped for the game.

What can you do on the pitch when you feel that Gate aren’t in good form? Work hard, counts for so much at this level. The results will come. We know as players we haven't been good enough. So when things are going well, we need to work hard for each other, concentrate, do the basics well, and it will come. We are very close to those 3 points.

What’s the dressing room morale like after not winning any game this season do you think that Gate can improve on there performance today so that we can get first win on the board? The morale has lifted massively over the last two games, personally those last two results have been tough to take. We could of taken 4 points from 6. We haven't we've taken 0 and it is what it is. Football can be very cruel. The lads know we are close to a win, but we've got to stick together and once that win does come, put a run together and start climbing the table.

What European team who u loved for Gate to go up against in champions league? The old school Real Madrid. Playing against, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Raul, Guti, Carlos, Casillas. That was some side.

Have u ever played at Wembley if who with if not what is your dream situation there I've never played a Wembley. Dream situation would be to see Newcastle beat spurs their last away game of the season and we win the premier league. Any chance?!

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE EUROPEAN CUP KICKCUP OFF KICKS OFF THE EUROPEAN

1955

On 4 September 1955, Sporting hosted the first European Cup match, drawing 3-3 with Partizan in Lisbon. Gabriel Hanot, editor of the French magazine L'Equipe, spurred the creation of the tournament, originally named the European Champions' Club Cup. The magazine selected sixteen initial participants--each from a different country--chosen to represent a cross-section of the best European clubs (though some of their preferred teams, such as Chelsea, declined the invitation). They were then placed them directly into a two-legged knockout round. Sporting were chosen from Portugal despite finishing the previous season in third place. Partizan had fared even worse, finishing fifth in the Yugoslavian league. A crowd of 33,000 watched that first match, played at Lisbon's Estádio Nacional, and were rewarded when Sporting midfielder João Martins (pictured) scored the opening goal in the 14th minute. Partizan winger Miloš Milutinović equalized in the 45th minute, then put the visitors ahead five minutes later. At the same time, the referee compounded Sporting's frustration, ejecting defender João Galaz from the match. Despite being down to ten men, Sporting drew level with a 60th-minute goal from winger Joaquim Almeida, then fell behind again after a Partizan forward Stjepan Bobek in the 73rd before Martins salvaged a draw, scoring his second of the day in the 78th minute. Partizan went on to win the second leg 5-2 on 12 October (with Milutinović scoring four) to advance to the quarterfinals, where they lost to eventual champions Real Madrid.

THERE’S NO PLAYER LIKE HOMARE

THERE’S NO PLAYER LIKE HOMARE

1978 1978

On 6 September 1978, former Japan national team captain and FIFA World Player of the Year Homare Sawa was born in Tokyo. She started her footballing career at the age of thirteen with L.League champions Yomiuri Beleza, making thirteen appearances for them in 1991. She remained there for a total of ten seasons, scoring 79 goals in 136 appearances while winning league titles (1991-93). She spent two more spells with Beleza from 2004 to 2009 then again in 2011, winning another six league titles. In between, she played in the United States for the Denver Diamonds (1999), Atlanta Beat (2001-03), and Washington Freedom (2009-10). Sawa received her first call-up to the Japanese national team in 1993 and played a key role in their run to the quarterfinals in the 1995 Women's World Cup. She starred for them in the next four World Cups, and eventually captained them to the trophy in 2011 with a win over the United States on penalties in the final. That performance helped her win the 2011 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Award. She won silver with Japan at the 2012 Summer Olympics, then announced her immediate retirement from international football. She played club football in Japan for Kobe Leonessa from 2010 until 2015, when she retired completely.

BOCA’S BIG PAYBACK On 8 September 1968, Boca Juniors ended San Lorenzo's 26-game unbeaten streak, defeating the defending champions 0-1. San Lorenzo's run started with the last two matches of the 1967 Nacional competition and extended throughout the entire 1968 Metropolitano campaign, which ended with them as champions--the first time in Argentina's history that a team won a national title without a loss (Racing came close in 1966, losing only a single game). The last contest of the season, a 2-1 victory over Estudiantes in the league final, was their 26th consecutive game unbeaten, matching the streak by Boca Juniors in 1943-44. Coincidentally, San Lorenzo ended that run, beating Boca away, 2-1, so Boca took great pleasure in turning the tables on San Lorenzo with an away win of their own over the title holders in the first game of the 1968 Nacional. At the time, the record unbeaten run in Argentina was 39, set by Racing from 1965 to 1966, but Boca
