GATE ANNONCUED ANDY CLARKSON AS NEW FIRST TEAM MANAGER

Squires Gate are delighted to welcome back former manager Andy Clarkson to the club as first team manager. Former manager Andy Clarkson takes over from previous manager Danny Penswick and signals a fresh start for the club. Andy returns to the club having managed us to our highest ever finish of 6th position in the Premier Division in 2006. A former professional footballer with Bradford City, Guiseley and Accrington Stanley Andy moved into management first with Gate before leaving for AFC Fylde to take over as Head of Football Development for three years. After leaving Fylde Andy took up a role at Blackpool FC Academy before more recently coaching at AFC Blackpool and Clifton Rangers. Andy will be joined by Terry Green as his assistant whilst John Maguire will continue as Physio. Andy and Terry met the players for the first time last night taking a very positive training session. On the appointment the club committee have this to add: "We're delighted to welcome firstly Andy back to the club and to welcome Terry to the club. Both men are simply put football men, they live and breathe the game and most importantly both want success. We look forward to working closely with both of them and continuing to push this club forward." Andy took charge off his first game last Saturday where gate put in a great performance and came away with a point off Winsford but it should off been all 3 by the way gate played

Saturday 14th October 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 68 gate made a positive start to the game and went close after five minutes. A lovely back heel by Jack Williams found strike partner Mark Buchan but his shot was saved for a corner. AFC's first chance came on 15 minutes, good work down the right hand side saw the ball fall to Edgar in the middle but he fired over the bar. The visitors would open the scoring after 17 minutes. Ben Fletcher did well to save Joe Whittington's shot that was heading towards the top corner to concede a corner. From the corner played high into the penalty spot, former Gate defender Chris Anderson was on the mark to head past Fletcher. Liverpool striker Kevin Edgar was the unlucky to be denied on 21 minutes when his powerful effort almost caught Ben Fletcher out. He did well to keep hold of the long range effort though. Gate were unlucky to not equalise on 24 minutes when AFC cleared the ball off the line. The equaliser would come a minute later though. The ball was played into the path of Mark Buchan after good work from Pett to take the ball past his man at the corner flag, Buchan firing into the roof of the net. Pett would then get in on the goal scoring act ten minutes later. He lined up a freekick from outside the box and fired low into the bottom corner, the keeper with no chance to save. Pett would then grab his second of the game five minutes before half time. He was in the right place at the right time to tap in Mark Buchan's corner at the back post.

A freekick was fumbled by Ben Fletcher in the box before Paul Carroll put his body on the line to make a goal saving tackle.

HALF TIME - Squires Gate 3-1 AFC Liverpool The away side started the second half the better of the two sides and would take the lead five minutes into the half. Another free header at the back post, headed in by defender Lee McConchie. AFC would then strike again a minute later to equalise. Jack Fleming's free kick going straight in from the right hand side. Gate would regain the lead ten minutes later. A low drive into the box by Pett set up Mark Buchan for the easy tap in for his second of the day. AFC then had a golden chance to grab another goal three minutes later. Sub Heron setting up striker Boden, but he fired over the bar. Gate's own sub had a big impact 69 minutes when he scored his first for the club. Winger Radim Cech with a deep cross that beat the keeper and snuck in at the far post. AFC would then grab another goal back in a hectic second half. Declan Hill this time with another free header. Gary Pett had a great chance to secure his hatrick with six minutes of the game left. Cech's cross finding Pett but his first shot at the back post was blocked, his second with his left foot was easily saved.Pett then had the last chance of the game for Gate when he met Mark Buchan's freekick, but his header was over the bar.

Saturday 21st October 2017 // St Luke’s Barton Stadium // Attendance: 127 The improvement from Gate was clear to see early on with Clarkson’s side looking fired up for this game. Gal Pett could have put Gate ahead after just two minutes from Mike Hall’s corner. He rose highest to head towards goal but headed over the bar. Gate were forced into an early sub after seven minutes when Mark Thornber clashed knees with a Winsford player and an old injury flared up. A bit of quick play from Gal Pett almost set Gate through on 13 minutes. He launched a quick long throw into the path of Jack Williams but it was touched out for a corner which came to nothing. The homeside would take the lead against the run of play on 22 minutes. A double save by Ben Fletcher denied them before Winsford fired in from a shot off the bar. Gate could have scored five minutes later when Tarren Moxon won the ball high up the pitch. He crossed towards Gal Pett in the box but the keeper came to claim the ball first. Pett then had a chance of his own on 30 minutes from the edge of the box. He turned and shot but his low drive was wide of the post. Gate would get their deserved goal five minutes before half time. Mike Hall’s superb freekick found Gal Pett at the back post, he headed the ball across goal to find Mark Buchan who headed in for the equaliser. Gate would then go on to take the lead. Dean Ing twice winning the ball on the edge of the box before playing in Jack Williams who made no mistake to fire past the keeper.

HALF TIME – Winsford United 1-2 Squires Gate The second half saw Gate go close to adding to their 2-1 lead through Gal Pett. Tarren Moxon showing great agility to beat his marker before over hitting his cross to the back post where Pett was, and he was mightily unlucky to strike the post from a very tight angle. The homeside looked to be getting together some momentum in the second half with Gate looking to hold onto the 2-1 win. They broke from a Squires Gate freekick in the 62nd minute but man of the match Paul Carroll calmly saw the ball out for a goal kick. Taren Moxon again beat his man with blistering pace on 74 minutes but again Winsford cleared his cross into the box. A minute later and Gate had the best chance of the game to put the game out of sight! Jack Williams was sent through one on one with the keeper but the home keeper did well to smother the ball after Williams tried to round him. With Gate looking like seeing out the three points, the homeside would grab an equaliser out of nothing. A ball into the back post that should have been seen out for a goal kick was handballed by Alex Colquhoun as he rose to head away. Justin Pickering converting the penalty from the spot. Sub Jordan O’Mahoney had to be alert late into added time to head away from a late Winsford freekick.

LAST TEN SEASONS:

THE BOSS IAN STREET Ian Was Appoint Congleton Town back in may 2017 before Congleton Town he spent four seasons at 1874 Northwich and along side with the Witton Abilon manger got Northwich to one off there higher position in the NWCFL.

Congleton brought him to the club to so hopefully if he given the time he would be able to do exactly what he did at 1874 Northwich and take Congleton and make them on off the well known team in the division.

Gate and Congleton already met at the Brain Addison stadium this season when gate host them in the fa Vase sadly for gate Street and his Congleton team came out on top but sadly there got knock round later V 1874 Northwich.

BREIF HISTORY Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938.Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

KEVIN LAWTON

This week we interviewed Congleton Town Fan Kevin Lawton, he has been a bear supporter since the early 70’s.So we asked him what his expectations was for Congleton this season, what his best game has been Congleton also we asked him who was the most underrated player at Congleton. What are your expectations for the the new season after last season 16th place finish?

Don’t need prima donnas ruining the team spirit – leave them where they are,

With the new management team and basically a new team on the Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the pitch, expectations are high, hoping for a top six finish then push score? on next season Was here a few weeks ago when we won 6-2 in the Vase. Always seems to be good weather when we come to Gate. This season will been different to last because? New management team – see previous answer

What has been ur most memorable moment of all time at Congleton Town? Probably the FA Cup first round defeat at Crewe Alex in 1989/90 season – and the game when we beat Witton in the round before realising at the final whistle what we had done. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? The usual suspects – Runcorn Linnets and 1874 Northwich. Always good games

If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Congleton players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? Fletcher and Adegbenro from the Bears, Fraser Foster in goal (big enough to fill a 5-a-side goal), Christian Erikson Midfield master and Tim Cahill to keep the back tidy

Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Not the new stadium, been to the old one a few times, couple of FA Cup Finals in the late 70s and England v Cameroon.

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this sea- Your most underrated player is? Oliver Ford (mainly cos I sponsor him) son? Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Been to most now down the years, but always like to go to AFC Darwen and Barlick – good grounds, nice people

Danny Penswick has done a sterling job in the last few seasons and has played after 150 games for you now I believe (160 to be precise)

If you could change one thing about your club what would Gate should keep eye out on what player from Congleton it be and why? Difficult, we have a great set up at Booth Street with hardworking Town ? clubmen. Can’t really pin anything down.

The Declan – leading scorer and regular MOM

Fans from other club don't know that Congleton?

The best away fan are?

Was a founder member of the North West Counties League back in 1982 and missed the league title on goal difference in 85/86, would have taken it had it been 3 for a win and not 2 in those days.

Hilary, my twitter stand in, does a sterling job when I can’t get to games

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

Prediction for today game? Can’t see another 6-2. You have two decent results lately. Hopefully 2-1 to the Bears

CONGLETON TOWN Foster 83, Morris 89

Saturday 21st October 2017/Townfield // Attendance:101 Congleton met Northwich Vics in their first league meeting since 1964 (losing 7-1 away that day). They welcomed back William Hasler-Cregg, who was stretcherd off a couple of weeks ago with a neck injury. Bears started brightly and had a couple of shots on goal in the opening minutes with Thomas Stephens and Emini Adegbenro going close. Declan Fletcher caused panic down the right wing on several occasions and got in some great crosses which no one was able to finish. Northwich started to exert some pressure and former Bear Matthews hit the side netting and Gorman firing just over the bar. Andrew Jones was being kept busy in the Bears goal. Adegbenro almost put Congleton in front on the half hour. He received the ball on the edge of the box, looked up and lobbed Donlan in the home goal, but somehow, he got back and tipped the ball over the bar. The Bears were getting frustrated as they were getting the ball in the Northwich box, but the home defence was closing them down very quickly, preventing them getting shots away. Northwich took the lead on 39 minutes, Matthews fired past Jones. Just a minute later it was 2-0. Fitton put through for a one-on-one with Jones and he slotted home. Ryan Hibbert hit a free-kick just outside the box for the Bears but Donlan made another excellent save, Stephens hitting the rebound wide.

Half Time Northwich Vics 2-0 Congleton Town The second half began with torrential and strong wind. Morris in the Bears defence put in a good block to deny Matthews and Bickett fired a shot which Jones gathered easily. Donlan made another good save to deny Jonathan Cavanagh. On 73 minutes Gorman stretched the home lead. Cutting inside on the edge of the box he fired low past Jones, 3-0 Northwich. Bears brought on Oliver Ford and Hasler-Cregg in an effort to get back in the game. On 80 Steve Foster had a chance but a great 01 MICHAEL DONLON 01 ANDREW JONES last-ditch tackle denied him. He was not to be denied 02 JORDAN GRANT 02 JORDAN MARTIN however and on 83 he picked up a loose ball in the box 03 DANIEL JOHNSON 03 JOHNATHON CAVANAGH and hammered into the roof of the net, 3-1. Bears now 04 SAMEUL FITTON 04 THOMAS MORRIS piled on the pressure and Adegbenro hit a great cross but 05 ADAM LAWERENCE 05 RICHARD PETERS the ball bounced off Foster and out for a goal kick, then 06 ALLEN WESTON 06 THOMAS STEPHENS Adegbenro himself had a chance but Donlan saved well. On 89 more Bears pressure resulted in a corner, Thomas 07 RORY GORMAN 07 RYAN HIBBERT Morris rose above the defence and headed into the net 3 08 LIAM BICKETT 08 JASON CAREY -2. In stoppage time the Bears found the net, but it was 09 BRIAN MATTHEWS 09 EMINI ADEGBENRO ruled off-side. SQUIRES GATE

Saturday 26th August 2016

.Gate struggled to get into the game early on and the home side would make them pay. James Kirby curling the ball past Speight in net after three minutes after he was allowed too much space. The home side could have had two goals in quick succession. Gate captain Andy Richards heading the ball off the line and over the bar. The home side heading wide from the following corner. Gate could have been back in the game on six minutes. The returning Anthony Stayte linking up well with top goal scorer Ric Seear but Stayte’s touch was just a little too heavy and the home keeper did well to collect. It seemed to take Gate at least ten minutes to get into the game. They had some good possession in midfield but struggled to create clear chances. The more the game went on the better gate got though and got their reward for the turn around. Joe Noblet delivering the corner into the near post, the ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Ric Seear who bundle the ball into the back of the net. As quick as Gate scored one they got back into the game and scored another! Ryan Tanser picking up the ball down the right hand side to drive forward. He looked up as he entered the box before picking his spot low into the bottom corner. The second half started just as bad as the first for Gate. The homeside levelling the game just one minute into the second half. Gate caught starting the game slowly again, Nathan Haynes grabbing the goal. Ryan Tanser had the chance to put Gate ahead twice within the space of a minute. First Ric Seear did well to cut the ball back to Tanser on the penalty spot but he had more time than he thought and fired over. He then bought out the best of the home keeper. Tanser broke away from the defence and tried to slot the ball under the keeper’s legs but the keeper did very well to save with his feet. Gate’s best chance came on 61 minutes. First the home sides keeper tipped the ball over the bar from Joe Noblet’s shot from the edge of the box. Then from the follow up corner fell to Alex McKendrick’s feet in the box, but he couldn’t sort his feet out quick enough to get a shot away. The home side would win the game on 72 minutes. Striker Declan Fletcher left unmarked at the back post to take a touch and fire home to win the game for Congleton.

Saturday 8th April 2017

Squires Gate left it till the death on Saturday afternoon to pick up a valuable point in their end of season run in. Congleton Town had taken the lead after 10 minutes but a 97th minute equaliser from 17 year old sub Conor Smith denied the visitors all three points. Gate started the game well and had the chance to take the lead after four minutes. Max Rothwell cut inside and almost intercepted a back pass in front of the keeper but the Bears stopper did well to be Maxto the ball. Up the other end the visitors went close, showing early on what a tight end to end game this would be. The visitors would take the lead in fortunate fashion after eight minutes. A clear looking foul on Paul Alexander waved away by the referee allowed Congleton to cross into the box where Declan Fletcher headed into Joe Griffith in goal, with the ball falling into the net, another foul not given. Gate had Joe Griffith to thank after sixteen minutes when he got down low to his left to save a low drive. The ball was given away up front and the visitors broke with pace but Griffith did well to save. The Bears would test Gate again after thirty-three minutes but they ired wide from the edge of the box. Gate would end the first half the better of the two sides. Tarren Moxon showed a great burst of pace to get away from the defence but his cut back was easily cleared with nobody in the box for Gate. Gate then had a goal disallowed two minutes before half time. Dave Rossall got up highest to meet the corner but the Congleton defender did well to head the ball off the line and behind for a corner. The second half saw a much better display from Gate who became more attacking as the game went on searching for that equaliser. A succession of free kicks for Gate came to nothing as first Paul Alexander's effort hit the wall then Joe Noblet's follow up shot was well over. Then the visitors easily cleared from Noblet's freekick into the box then forced Griffith into a good save down the other end after countering. Another freekick was played in by Paul Alexander and he found his defensive partner Dave Rossall but his header could only find the hands of the keeper. Gate changed up their formation with sub Jordan Casey coming on and looked better for it in the last 20 minutes. Charlie Waters, now on the opposite flank, did well to beat his man easily, his pass into the box found Joe Noblet but his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. Tarren Moxon was sent through over the top with 13 minutes left and after doing the hard work of getting away from his man he fired wide. of the goal. Late into the game Gate were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty after Dave Rossall, up from a corner, was fouled on the edge of the box with a knee high tackle. But like throughout the game and for both teams, the referee waved away what looked like another clear decision. Gate didn't give up though and in the 97th minute grabbed a deserved equaliser. Step up Conor Smith just two weeks after his 17th birthday to fire into the goal after Joe Noblet's shot deflected into his path.

VIEW FROM THE EDITOR In a new feature, Gate Editor Jay Hayden writes his thoughts on Congleton Ton and he reflects on gate past 2 games.

First of all, welcome to the Brain Addison for today’s game vs Congleton town, we last played Congleton back in September but it was in the FA Vase where gate put in a great perfoumce but sadly gate was beat to Congleton by 6-2. Gate parting company with Manger Danny Penswick 2 weeks ago and it then leaded to club CoChairman, Secretary and Legend John Maguire to lead Gate to 5-4 victory v AFC Liverpool which mean now John had took Chagre of two Games and lead them to Victory twice both with big score lines. After that gate hired New man Andy Clarkson who used to manager Gate a few season ago and lead them to 6th, His first game Saw him travel to the St Luke’s Barton Stadium where gate could off came home with all 3 points but ended taking 1 point back to Blackpool after conceding a late goal to Winsford but yet again they hard work didn't pay off. Andy will be hoping his first game back in Blackpool as Squires Gate manager will be a successful one but he will know that Congleton we not roll over and give Gate all 3 points.

Congleton come into todays game after losing 2-3 to Northwich Vics, Congleton put in all can in vs Northwich vics and like in gate game they quiet late on and ended coming away with nothing but that won’t effect the team spirt down because Congleton are always a good team and every time they arrive in Blackpool there always put in 100% and be no walk over on the pitch as gate saw when they last came to gate.

Thank you all for you all for your support and hope you all enjoy the game.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE EUROPEAN CUP KICKS OFF HE CAME, HE SAW , HE CONQUERED

1955 1966

On 24 October 1966, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was born in the city of Saratov in southern Russia. Currently one of the richest men in the world, he has spurred Chelsea to a massive haul of silverware including multiple league titles and the Champions League trophy. Abramovich accumulated his wealth quickly, though he has been accused of using methods of questionable legality. For example, while still serving in the Soviet Army, he made money by selling allegedly stolen gasoline. By 1995, however, he, along with a partner, had acquired a controlling interest in a large Russsian oil company, paying $100 million. In 2003, he bought Chelsea from then-owner Ken Bates. He paid £140 million for the club, who at the time were saddled with debt, and quickly steered them to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006-their first league titles since 1955. Chelsea have had twelve different (noncaretaker) managers under Abramovich, including Claudio Ranieri, José Mourinho (twice), Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti, and current boss Antonio Conte. Throughout, Chelsea have won five league titles (2005, 2006, 2010, 2015, and 2017), four FA Cups (2007, 2009, 2010, 2012), and the Champions League (2012).

CHICAGO DENIES DC

1998

On 25 October 1998, the Chicago Fire, playing in their first season, won the MLS Cup over two-time champions DC United. Chicago had compiled an impressive record of 20 wins and 12 losses to reach 56 points on the season, third-best in the league behind the LA Galaxy (68) and DC United (58). In the playoffs, they beat the Colorado Rapids in the conference semifinals, then advanced over the Galaxy in a conference final shootout to reach the MLS Cup. The final was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where Chicago faced DC United, winners of the first two MLS Cups in 1996 and 1997. DC boasted one of the league's most potent attacks. Featuring forwards Roy Lassiter and Jaime Moreno, DC had scored a total of 81 goals, second only to the Galaxy's 85. Chicago, however, managed to hold DC scoreless in the final while getting two goals of their own from striker Jerzy Podbrożny (29') and midfielder Diego Gutiérrez (45'). Both goals were assisted by midfielder Piotr Nowak (pictured), was was named the game's most valuable player. It remains Chicago's only MLS Cup, though they finished as runners-up in 2000 and 2003. DC went on to win it again in 1999 and 2004.

THE DEATH OF SERGINHO On 27 October 2004, São Caetano defender Serginho suffered a cardiac arrest during a match against São Paulo and died later that day. He was 30 years old. The center back, whose real name was Paulo Sérgio Oliveira da Silva, had joined São Caetano in 1999 after spending the previous four years at six different clubs. While there, according to goalkeeper Silvio Luiz, team doctors discovered that Serginho had an enlarged heart which put him at risk for potential cardiac problems. But, again according to Luiz, they thought the risks of an incident were "less than one percent." In the 38th week of the season, São Caetano was away at São Paulo when Serginho suffered a seizure and collapsed in the 60th minute. Physicians from both teams attempted to revive him, but with no success. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The match was abandoned with a score of 0-0, but the remaining 30 minutes were played on 3 November, with São Caetano winning 4-2. They were later docked 24 points for allowing Serginho to play with a known heart condition, dropping them from fifth to eighteenth in the
