Saturday 1st September 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance:130 Squires Gate maintained their good start to the season with a second home win in a week, this time against 1874 Northwich. Gate came into this game with an injury crisis hitting the squad with Joe Booth, Ric Seear, Gary Pett and Adam Sumner all unavailable. Manager Andy Clarkson recruited two new faces in the lead up to the game with midfielder Hyuga Tanner and James Boyd joining on a dual registration from Bamber Bridge. Both teams came into the game in differing form with 1874 sitting 16th in the league with just three points. Gate came into this game up in 5th with ten points. It was the visitors who started the first half the better of the two sides but didn’t test Gatekeeper Ben Fletcher in the opening exchanges. Gate who handed both new signings Boyd and Tanner debuts, took time to get into the game. Gate’s first effort on goal came from one of the new midfielder, Hyuga Tanner. He burst into the box after 18 minutes but his shot curled the wrong side of the post. Matthew Beadle had the ball in the net for 74’ after 23 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside. Gate started to come into the game on the 30-minute mark and went close twice. First Andrew Richards’s freekick was tipped over by keeper Matthew Green, before the corner was cleared by 1874 with Ben Reader challenging looking for his second goal in two games. As the first half went on, Gate started to control the game more. Brett Dawson had the homeside’s best chance late into the half when he received the ball on the edge of the box before cleverly turning and shooting just wide. Half Time: Squires Gate 0 1874 Northwich 0

Gate started the second half as they’d ended the first and opened the scoring after just 5 minutes. 74 keeper Matthew Green miss-hit his clearance straight to the feet of Ryan Charnley who kept his calm to roll the ball into the back of the net. Brett Dawson, who’s closing down forced the first goal, came close on 56 minutes to doubling Gate’s lead. A deep corner from Gate fell to Dawson at the back post but the striker’s low drive was cleared off the line by a 1874 defender. As Gate’s control of the game continued to grow, Andy Clarkson’s men were awarded a penalty on the hour mark. 1874 keeper Matthew Green was judged by the referee to have blocked the man ignoring the ball when Brett Dawson was closing the ball down. Green saw Red and Dawson dusted himself down to fire past midfielder Matt Woolley who was unlucky getting a hand to the ball. The visitors had calls for a penalty waved away after 76 minutes when they felt one of Gate’s players had handballed the ball in the area, the ref though gave it in Gate’s favour much to 1874’s annoyance. 1874 came forward late into the game as Gate sat back happy with the 2-0 win but still couldn’t find a goal. A testing ball was sent across the face of Gate’s goal in the 90th minute but nobody in Green could get a touch. Gate’s goal scoring for the wasn’t over when two of Gate’s substitutes combined late into added time. Hyuga Tanner found the run of Joey Mullen who’s shot was parried by Woolley in goal leaving an easy tap in for Finley Clarkson at the back post to make it 3-0. The win for Gate lifts Andy Clarkson’s men upto joint third in the league, level on points with City of Liverpool.

Q&A WITH Andy Richards Firstly who encouraged you to start playing? My Dad, earliest memory I can remember would be playing Cubs football

With you being the longest serving player at the club and known as a Legend by all, what makes be a part of a club for so long and what has been you most memorable moments at Gate? As ive been saying “this is my last year” for about 5 years, this is 100% it. The best advice I got when I started was to get on with the people behind the scenes. And as everyone knows, we have a lot of special people at Gate behind the scenes that are so appreciated by everyone. If you ask Albert he has a memorable picture of my celebration from scoring from the half way line vs Maine Rd in the FA cup a few years ago. It was a cold day

What new player do you think will have a big impact for gate this season and will be hard to handle for teams? New player I would say Joe Booth, everyone loves a goal scorer and its great to have Ric back, but what Joe gives you in the middle of the park is someone who is going to control games and win a game with a pass 99% of the players would never see. We have a great set of lads at Gate this year and that’s a credit to Clarky for recruiting well.

After last year great finished to the season after what was a patching start, how do you feel the management has impact on that and make it harder to put your name on that team sheet? Not to well on the past, but Clarky and Terry have set a structure and a foundation where we are solid, then build from that. Giving lads confidence, belief and only asking 100% effort is returned, is a

basic ingredient that can take you a long way. Added with the quality, who knows what is achievable. With gate now having a good young set up what player do you feel can go on to be a good star at higher level? To me everyone seems young. Dean Ing. If he believed in himself a little more and stopped eating McDs he would be someone I would like to see go higher

Do you still sometime get them pre match nevrevs that all player dread? Never, not really a superstitious person. A little wee just before Kick off settles any nerves. I still get excited tohugh, I know ill miss it

How many more years do you think ur still be at Gate before you are going retire and do you think your drop down a league before you do retire completely? If Gate hadn’t of paid me double this year I may of retired. In all seriousness if Gate didn’t need me then I would either offer to

support behind the scenes or come and watch with my son Bailey and be a fan. There are a few local clubs I would offer to support if they needed me, but its painful not being able to do things you used to take for granted and the ego can only take so much

With the FA Cup Replay today, what the best moment you have watch or played in the FA Cup and do you feel Gate has what it take to get far in it this season? Best moment would be when Steven Gerrard scored the equaliser vs West Ham at Cardiff. I used to love going to that stadium and Liverpool had a successful few years there. We proved at Droylsden that we will never give u fighting. We have the quality going forward to punish any team. If we stick together and get a small bit of luck, who knows where it could take us

What new teams that has came are you looking forward to facing? I always look forward to playing teams from Liverpool, so Litherland coming into our league is a plus. But our result at Silsden, where we got a draw and could of taken all 3 points, I believe will look a good result towards the end of the season

Are there any Ground that are you looking forward to playing this season? I would say Runcorn until they got promoted, but I always enjoy Ashton Athletic and Bootle for completely different reasons. One gives you a cuddle when you arrive, the other chucks boiling tea on you

If you was could bring any 3 BPL players to Gate who would the be and why? Mo Salah, Harry Kane, Naby Keita They can teach our forwards how to finish and Keita has pace which our team hasnt

Who is the best joker in the dressing room? Fletch, look at the way he dresses

Who has the worst taste in music? Dave Rossall, loves anything by

Who is the best to get everybody ready and force on the game? The management, The captain or Seydou

Who is the worst trainer? Ben Reader/Ryan Charnley. They just discuss McFly with their hand in their pockets and do laps

What is the last thing you do the prepare yourself before you walk out on to the pitch to help you get ready for the game? Shake a few heands, line my trainers up and tie my shoe laces. Look for my dad when I come out

Saturday 25th August 2018//Butcher’s Arms Ground // Attendance: 164 Squires Gate travelled to Evo Stik side Droylsden looking to progress to the next round of the FA Cup for just the 5th time in 18 attempts. Manager Andy Clarkson chose his strongest side for the visit to Manchester with Matty Kay coming back in for Brett Dawson who dropped to the bench, Andrew Richards came in for Ben Teader in defence. Gate started the game not letting Droylsden have any time on the ball. The Blues pressed the higher league side from the start, particularly Gate strikers who didn’t give Droylsden a minute as they tried to play out from the back. It was the homeside though who opened the scoring. Winger Domaine Rouse getting in behind Gate’s backline to shoot low beating Ben Fletcher. Gate’s first shot of the game came from Joe Booth after 11 minutes but it was easily gathered by the home keeper. Gate equalised soon after through Gary Pett. He fired a superb freekick past the keeper and into the top corner beating the keeper. It didn’t take long for the home side to regain the league, in fact just one minute later. Liam Caddick was unmarked at the far post to give Droylsden the lead for the second time in the game. Gate had the chance to equalise through Ryan Riley after 24 minutes but his shot was tame after Pett had stretched to keep the ball in. Gate then had to be alert minutes after at the other end of the pitch when Andrew Richards came to the rescue clearing the ball off the line. Gate's persistence paid off after 30 minutes when Ric Seear equalised with his first of the game. He rose highest to head home strike partner Gary Pett's cross to the front post to out Gate level.

sub Callum Bagshaw in one on one with Ben Fletcher to score.

Half time: Droylsden 3-2 Squires Gate

Ben Fletcher had to be alert for Gate as the second half got underway. He made a point blank save to deny Sefton Gonzales for a corner, which Gate cleared. Gate had to good chances early into the second half as first Joe Booth fired wide then Adam Sumner sent a freekick over the bar. The homeside extended their lead soon after Gate's chances. Sefton Gonzales heading past Ben Fletcher from Dom Kerrigan's inch perfect cross. Ryan Riley created a great chance for himself to pull a goal back for Gate when he cut inside his man, curling shot was just wide of the post though. Sub Ryan Charnley mad an instant impact when he joined the game, grabbing a goal back for Gate. Gary Pett challenged the keeper who dropped the ball falling to Charnley who calmly slotted the ball into the empty net. Ben Fletcher had to be alert with 12 minutes left to deny Droylsden with two quality saves. That spurred Gate on to find an equaliser. That goal came in the 82nd minute through Ric Seear with his second of the game. He was in the right place to head in Andrew Richards cross. The goal will see the two sides meet again on Tuesday 4th Droylsden retook the lead on the stroke of half time. DAVE PACE Dave’s association with the club stretches back to the early nineties where he played for the club’s youth team in the Lancashire league. As a player he had spells abroad with Dallas Tornados and Olympiakos before returning to England and taking a keen interest in Droylsden, a club his father watched from the terraces. He has been chairman of the club since 1993/94 and after a succession of managers; he took over as manager in 1998 when the club was in the Unibond First Division. Since then he has won the Unibond First Division, Unibond Presidents Cup, the Peter Swales Challenge Shield and the Manchester Premier Cup a number of times. After a heart-breaking Play-off Final defeat in 2005/06 against Stafford he won the Conference North title in 2006/07 to take the club to its highest level of non-league football for the first time in its history. The stay in the Conference was to be a short one and the club was relegated after only one season.

The town wasn't big enough for two clubs, especially with bad feeling between them, and after the local council bought the ground, a merger was negotiated. Droylsden came home in 1952 to a renovated ground whose pitch had been rotated to its present position, finally eradicating a long-standing drainage problem. Two decades in the Combination ended in 1968 with a return to the Cheshire League, after the formation of the Northern Premier League. The club won the Manchester Senior Cup in 1973, 1976 and 1979 and enjoyed some FA Cup success, reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round four times in five seasons and the Cup proper twice. In 1976 Droylsden lost 5-3 in a First round replay at Grimsby Town, after a late home goal was disallowed. In 1978, Dave Taylor's goal at Rochdale sent Drolysden through to a second round tie at home to Altrincham, who ended the run with a 2-0 win. However when the late 1970s side broke up, Droylsden's fortunes slumped, and they finished a distant bottom of the First Division in 1982. They were then placed in Division Two of the new North West Counties Football League. The unstable period ended with the appointment of Mark Fallon as player-manager. In his second season Fallon guided the club to the Second Division Championship, which was Droylsden's first senior honour. After finishing third in the inaugural season of the Conference North in 2004-05, Droylsden were looking to go one better and reach the top tier of non-league football for the first time in their history. A fourth-place finish in the 2005-06 season gave Droylsden a second chance to reach the Conference National through the play-offs. However, they narrowly missed out on promotion in a penalty shoot-out in the final against Stafford Rangers. On 29 March 2006 Droylsden lost 2-1 to Hyde United in the final of the Manchester Premier Cup. On 18 April 2007 they beat Flixton 3-0 in the final of the Manchester Premier Cup. Three days later they beat Harrogate Town 2-0 and so won promotion to the Conference National as Conference North champions with two games in hand. However, they struggled in the Conference National, and were relegated back to the Conference North on 8 April even though they beat Farsley Celtic 2-1, due to Weymouth's draw against Grays Athletic the same evening. A return to the blue square north in the 2008/09 season saw Droylsden finish seventh with an almost completely rebuilt squad. Winners of the Manchester cup and a long unbeaten run in the FA cup, only to be disqualified for an administration error regarding an ineligible player. 2009/10 saw Droylsden clinch a play off spot finishing fifth in the league and after a great display against Fleetwood Town winning 2-0, they lost the away leg 3-1 and went out 5-4 on penalties The 2010/11 season threw up a mixed bag of results and given the high standards the club has set itself over recent years it was a disappointment not to be involved in the play offs, having said that the club continues to punch above its weight in the Blue Square North on low attendances and should be proud that they are able to compete in such a tough league against clubs of such high pedigree. The FA Cup and the FA Trophy runs were highlights of the season. The team got further than ever before in The Trophy which was a fantastic achievement in itself. The club was also involved in a great FA Cup run culminating in drawing at home to Leyton Orient on live television only to be beaten in extra time at the away replay in a somewhat bizarre ending to a game in which for long periods the Bloods outplayed the O's. Silverware was once again in the trophy cabinet courtesy of another Manchester Premier Cup win over Ashton United in the final. The Bloods winning a competitive game 4-3. The 2011/12 season saw the Bloods finish in a respectable ninth position in the Blue Square North. They exited the FA cup at the 4th qualifying round after two games with Blyth Spartans which was disappointing as they dominated these matches but could not convert the chances that came their way. A great win over Mansfield Town at home in the FA Trophy was a season highlight but they were beaten in the next round by Kidderminster Harriers. Droylsden’s dominance of the M/cr premier cup in recent years came to an end when they were not in a position to field a team to contest the final, the game and the cup were awarded to Mossley. The 2012/2013 season proved to be the worst season for a good number of years in terms of both results and off field problems, financial constraints on the club meant that more resources were channelled into sorting out these finances and the playing side obviously suffered, perhaps inevitably relegation loomed for most of the season despite the best efforts of management and players. So a new start in a new league beckons for 2013/2014 in the Evo Stik Premier league. The 2013/2014 season was a disaster on the field but off it a great triumph was relatively unheralded outside the club and that was the achievement of staying in business and being able to continue the history of Droylsden FC, all funds were channelled into paying off our debts with nothing left for the playing budget, inevitably despite the best efforts of everyone involved relegation to the Evo Stik first division ensued, hopefully now is the time for rebuilding as we look to the future and try to put the dark days behind us. The 2014/2015 season finally saw some stability return to the club, off the field our chairman managed to bring our finances under control with the settlement of a large debt, and on the field we were in a position to field a competitive team for the first time in a few seasons. A mid table finish was a great improvement on previous years and whilst it was not a remarkable season in terms of success it does look as if we have managed to stop the downward spiral the club had been involved in and it gives us a platform to try and bring some success back to the club, this season did prove to the Droylsden faithful that there is light at the end of a long, dark tunnel and hopefully this season can be the start of another journey onwards and upwards. The 2015/2016 season was another season of consolidation and was pretty much nondescript in the main, no good cup runs and a league campaign which was disappointing, although there was never a real possibility of relegation a final league position of 19th was not what anyone had wanted or expected but the club showed its fortitude once again by maintaining its trading position and there is real hope that as we progress off the field we can once again do the same on the field. The 2016/2017 season was a season of underachievement, in that the team never really fulfilled its true potential on the pitch, we were back to the good football and passing which has been our hallmark in the past but too many games were either lost or drawn and a thirteenth position in the league was not the impact which was wanted, however all bodes well for the next season as it is hoped many of the current squad will remain and with a few additions we are all looking forward to an exciting campaign.

LAST TIME IN THE LEAGUE FOR DROYLSDEN LEEK TOWN Bailey 81

1 1

DROYLSDEN CADDICK 62

Tuesday 21st August 2018/Harrison Park/ATT:322/HT:0-0

Town started well and Charlie Walford got the first shot on target in the 11th minute which forced a good low save out of Chris Thompson.A minute later Clive Lewis headed goalwards following a Droylsden corner but Mat Bailey was on hand to clear the ball off the line. The Bloods were having the lions share of possession as the half wore on, but in the 34th minute Tim Grice worked himself an opening but skewed a difficult chance over. A minute later the visitors had the ball in the net from a header but the flag was up for offside. Both sides had chances just before the break firstly the Bloods Ryan Jennings headed weakly at Danny Roberts when he was found by a cross at the far post. Then at the other end Walford crossed deep and Niall Green (pictured, above) coming in at the back post headed just over. Jordan Johnson replaced Walford at half-time and ten minutes in Niall Maguire came close with a low skimming shot just wide of the post. Sefton Gonzales then headed a chance wide for Droylsden before they took the lead in the 62nd minute when a low shot from Liam Caddick from just inside the box found the bottom corner of the Blues net. The Bloods threatened a second just five minutes later when Shaun Holden's fine effort went just over the crossbar. On 69 minutes Grice was played in by Rob Stevenson, but as he turned and got his shot away, Kelvin Lugsden made a great block to prevent a goal. Maguire whipped a wonderful cross right across goal in the 76th minute but Stevenson just couldn't get the touch to turn it in. Five minutes later Blues were level when Mat Bailey steamed in 01 DANNY ROBERTS to head home a corner from close range. Both sides 01 CHIRS THOMPSON pushed for the winner and Roberts was at full stretch to 02 NIALL GREEN 02 SHQUILLE ANTOINE CLARKE get his fingers to a low Domaine Rouse shot whilst a 03 JOE KEARNS 03 SHAUN HOLDEN minute later Johnson tried a curler which just cleared 04 MARC GROCOTT the Bloods crossbar. In the end a point apiece was 04 CLIVE SMTH probably just about right between two teams who on 05 SCOTT LYCETT 05 KELVIN LUGSDEN the evidence thus far will be hoping to be top five con06 MAT BAILEY 06 MIKE BREWSTER tenders this season. 07 NIALL MAGUIRE

SQUIRES GATE

0 4

ASHTON ATHLETIC

Saturday 4th August 2017/ The Brain Addison Stadium/Att:82

Squires Gate bowed out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking this weekend to Ashton Athletic. What was billed as a tight game in the build up was much different on the day with the visitors winning with ease. Danny Penswick named three new signings in the starting 11 for this game, all three playing in the FA Cup for the first time having signed from Blackpool Wren Rovers. Gate made a slow start to the game going behind after 11 minutes. After Gary Pett turned and shot over the bar it was clear it wasn't going to be Gate's day. Ashton allowed too much time outside the box, striker Joel Brownhill firing past Fletcher. Gate's first meaningful effort on goal didn't come until the half hour mark. Brett Dawson sending a rasping shot which was saved by Martin Pearson who spilled the ball, Mark Buchan unable to capitalise on the loose ball which was cleared. Ashton would grab a second goal just before half time. Midfielder Jamie Harrison lining up a freekick from the edge of the box to beat Ben Fletcher to his left hand side. The goal doubling Ashton's lead into half time. The visitors would continue their good form into the second half taking the lead nine minutes in. Striker Joel Brownhill grabbing his second of the game when he was allowed to walk through Gate's midfield with nobody closing him down. Gary Pett had another rare chance for Gate on 63 minutes but his header was over the bar. Midfielder Dean Ing was introduced on the 60 minute mark and almost made an instant impact. His cross in from the right hand side almost went straight in, the follow up corner cleared off the line from Pett's header. Ashton strike Joel Brownhill would cap of a perfect afternoon for himself on the 75th minute when he fired in from a tight angle inside the box for his hatrick goal.

SQUIRES GATE CHANRLEY 25 DAWSON 36 BOOTH 51

Saturday 11th August 2018/ The Brain Addison Stadium/Att:/ HT:

als from Brett Dawson, Ryan Charnley and Joe Booth gave Gate a 3-0 lead before a late comeback from the homeside came just too late. Gate had to make a couple of changes coming into this game, not the ideal preparation coming into the game. Striker Ric Seear missed out due a back injury, whilst Matty Kay was still recovering from an injury that kept him out of Gate's 6-1 midweek win against Burscough. Midfielder Dan Gray also missed out on the game due to a clause in his loan contract from parent club AFC Fylde. On his first start of the season, Brett Dawson linked well with Gary Pett after four minutes but Dawson's cross was caught by the keeper at the near post. Dawson then came close a second time in the sixth minute, he was found by a brilliant cross from Jordan Salthouse, but Dawson's header came back of the post.

The homeside themselves went close on two seperate occasions. First a corner was sent in but went over everyone's head. Then two minutes later one of West's wingers beat Gate to the byeline before sending a cross across the six yard box where nobody in white and black could get a touch. Gate opened the scoring after twenty two minutes when Ryan Charnley scored his second goal of the season. He was in the right place to tap in after Brett Dawson's volley was blocked on the line. The homeside looked to reply four minutes later and only Adam Sumner denied them. A header from Saul Henderson looked to be going in, but Adam Sumner rose highest to clear the ball off the line. Gate doubled their lead in the thirtieth minute when Brett Dawson got the goal his performance deserved. He timed his run well to run on to Joe Booth's through ball and fire past the keeper one on one. Gate's last chance of the first half came for Dawson again. He was found by an inch perfect corner from Adam Sumner but could only head wide. Half time: West Didsbury & Chorlton 0-2 Squires Gate The second half couldn't have started any worse for the homeside as they were reduced to ten men five minutes in. Keeper Jones came out of his area handling the ball whilst fouling Brett Dawson, earning himself a red card. From the resulting freekick, Gate captain Joe Booth showed his quality as he found the top corner with an unstoppable freekick. The home side refused to surrender and forced Ben Fletcher to save with his feet on the hour. And the hosts pulled one back with a pinpoint free-kick by Joe Shaw on 74 minutes. Keeper Ben Fletcher made another quality save in stoppage time but could not deny Saul Henderson a second for West, though it is Gate who will contest the preliminary round on Saturday week.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid

This week’s NLP programme column below, written by Hugo Varley. Since Jamie Vardy completed his fairy tale journey from Non-League obscurity to being a world famous Premier League winner, more media coverage than ever seems to have been dedicated to emphasising how the lower leagues can unearth hidden gems. This is something that should certainly be celebrated and is testament to the unique footballing culture that we have in this country. Nevertheless, more significance should be placed on the potential role that Non-League clubs can play in nurturing the next generation of young British managers. In an era where Premier League and Football League clubs appear to be increasingly turning towards foreign coaches, the role the Non-League pyramid can play in providing a learning curve for young British managers has become more important than ever. For this to happen, however, more Non-League clubs must make the brave decision to appoint young, unproven coaches. This is understandably a difficult decision for a club chairman to make but the potential rewards can be great. One example of a club who have taken such a gamble is Essex Senior League side Leyton Athletic. The Walthamstow based club, who were formally known as Wadham Lodge, gave 24-year-old Jason Ngandu his big break by appointing the former East Thurrock player as their new first-team manager midway through last season following the departure of former boss Marc Farrell. Ngandu, whose playing career was cruelly ended by injury, has grasped his opportunity in the dugout with both hands. After successfully steering the Wad Army away from relegation danger during the last campaign, Ngandu has built a young, hungry squad who are looking to make a real statement of intent in the Essex Senior League this season. Ngandu featured in a NLP article which focussed on his side’s FA Cup victory over Barkingside a couple of weeks ago. What became immediately apparent was his enthusiasm for management and coaching in general. With each game that passes, the young coach will learn first-hand about the rigours of football management, which will stand him in great stead for the future. This is all thanks to the brave decision making of the hierarchy at Leyton Athletic and it would be fantastic to see more and more Non-League clubs following their example.

LAST TIME GATE WAS HERE BURSCOUGH 3 GATE 2 Gate could have then doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. The home keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch after nine minutes when he pulled down Gary Pett who was in on goal. Pett dusted himself down and with the keeper only receiving a yellow card, lined up a freekick just outside the box. Unfortunately for Gate, the freekick deflected off the inside of the post before being cleared. Ben Fletcher then had to be alive in a mad spell to deny the homeside three times in six minutes. He first had to be alive when a freekick into the box found the head of Chad Whyte which Fletcher saved. Then from a similar area, Fletcher denied the homeside again before saving his best till last denying form Gate striker Terry Cummings on the half hour mark. The homeside would eventually equalise five minutes before half time. From Gate's own attack the Burscough broke forward seeing Ben Fletcher finally beaten by Peter Henerty. Gate wouldn't end there though and found themselves back in front on the stroke of half time. Gate stalwart Andrew Richards, forward from full back, showed great composure when the ball fell to him in the box to stroke the ball under Samberg to give his side the lead. Returning midfielder Dean Ing looked to extend Gate's lead straight into the second when he made space for himself, only to see his shot roll into the keepers arms. Ing could have then been in again minutes later when Mark Buchan looked for the midfielder's run, but the ball was cut out before it could find him. The homeside would equalise in the 74th minute. Defender Luke Gibson heading past Fletcher from a deep freekick into the back post. Burscough would then go on to win the game late into the last 10 minutes when a draw looked likely. The ball wasn't cleared by Gate allowing Matthew Ward to tap in a the back post for his third goal in four games.

AROUND THE LEAGUE Twenty seven ties in the Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round, plus games in all three divisions, offered a fascinating bill of fare at the weekend. It was a generally good weekend for our league in the Buildbase FA Vase, with twelve clubs progressing at the expense of opponents from other leagues, eight going out, and fourteen clubs were whittled down to seven after meeting fellow league members. Starting with the latter games, there was one all-Premier Division clash, and in a repeat of the league game five days earlier, Bootle gained revenge for their league defeat with a 2-1 win at Congleton Town, coming from behind to win with second half goals from Andrew Gillespie and Antony Hickey Lower Breck delivered the surprise result of the day with a 3-1 home win over Premier Division West Didsbury & Chorlton, Peter Donnelly scoring twice, and Simon Everall went one better for Whitchurch Alport at Abbey Hulton United, with all three goals in his side's 3-2 win. There were doubles for Ashton Town's Dylan Glass in the 3-1 win at home to St Helens Town, and also for Burscough's Jordan Lorde in their 5-1 defeat of Alsager Town at Victoria Park. Prestwich Heys won 2-0 at Holker Old Boys, Vauxhall Motors beat Longridge Town 3-1 in the only First Division North v First Division South encounter. Out of the twelve clubs who knocked out opponents from other leagues, six achieved the feat on home soil while the same number won on the road. The biggest away winners were Hanley Town, for whom Leigh Skellern scored twice in the 4-0 win at Pershore Town, and Silsden also scored four in a ding-dong contest at Harrogate Railway Athletic, with two goals in the final quarter from Lee Spires sealing a 4-3 win for the Cobbydalers. Zack Dale's double saw Barnoldswick Town through to a 2-1 win at Goole AFC, and a Jack Tomlinson winner eight minutes from the end of extra time ensured Stone Old Alleynians progressed to the next round with a 2-1 win at Gornal Athletic. Two clubs struck with winners in the 90th minute to ensure their progress, with Charnock Richard's Carl Grimshaw doing the needful to earn his side a 2-1 win at Alnwick Town and AFC Emley hearts were broken by a last gasp Litherland REMYCA goal from Declan Gregson, that delivered a 4-3 win for Remy on Friday. Sandbach United posted the biggest home winning margin, 5-1 against Athersley Recreation with Kieran Garner-Knapper and James Kirby both scoring twice, and five different scorers made the Daisy Hill scoresheet in their 5-2 win at New Sirs over Whitehaven of the West Lancashire League. Israel Johnson and Daniel Keane will go down in the Shelley history books as the players to score in the club's first ever appearance in the Vase that saw them win 2-1 at home to Penistone Church, and a late revival on the Wirral saw Cammell Laird 1907 snatch a 2-1 win over Harworth Colliery, thanks to goals in the last six minutes from Colm Lynch (a penalty) and Andrew Scarisbrick. Ben Duffield scored twice for AFC Blackpool in the 3-1 win over Nostell Miners Welfare at the Mechanics Ground, and Winsford United needed extra time to edge a 2-1 win over Liversedge at the St Luke's Barton Stadium, Peter Watling scoring the all-important goal in the 104th minute. For eight other clubs, opponents from other leagues ended their interest in the Vase for another season, although in the case of Chadderton and Eccleshall, extra time was needed to eliminate them. Chadderton lost 5-2 at Parkgate after the sides were tied at 2-2 after 90 minutes, and there was plenty of goal entertainment available at Copsewood Sports and Social Club, where Coventry Copsewood eventually beat Eccleshall 6-3 after the teams were level at 3-3 after 90 minutes. A late revival from St Martins at Wellington wasn't enough as the Saints went down 3-2, and in the other tie in Shropshire Ellesmere Rangers lost 4-0 at home to Birstall United. Ashton Athletic never recovered from going three down inside 18 minutes at Maltby Main, eventually losing 5-1, and a long trip to Lincolnshire proved to be without reward for AFC Liverpool, who lost 3-1 at Barton Town. There were 1-0 defeats for New Mills at Ollerton Town, and for Abbey Hey at Swallownest. Three games took place in the Premier Division, the most significant of those being on Friday night when City of Liverpool ended Runcorn Town's 100% start to the season with a 4-0 win. John McGrath scored twice for the Purps in front of an impressive crowd of 649. Squires Gate moved into fourth place with a 3-0 win over 1874 Northwich at the Brian Addison Stadium, courtesy of second half goals from Ryan Charnley, Brett Dawson (a penalty) and Finley Clarkson. A number of familiar faces were on opposing sides at Wincham Park, where Northwich Victoria shared a 2-2 draw with Padiham. Stuart McDonald and Brandon Barski gave Vics a two goal lead, but goals from Oliver Ford and Lee Knight rescued a point for the Storks. The First Division North is headed by Avro, who have a three point lead over Carlisle City at the top. Two first half penalties from Louis Potts were the decisive moments in Avro's 2-0 win at Atherton LR, while Carlisle City's 100% record was ended by AFC Darwen, for whom Leon Creech scored twice in their 3-1 win at Gillford Park. Steeton are in fifth place, although they lost 5-1 at Bacup Borough, and in the other game Garstang won 2-0 at home to Nelson. There were plenty of goals in the five games that were played in the First Division South, which is headed by Wythenshawe Amateurs, after their 4-1 win over Stone Dominoes at Hollyhedge Park, in a game that all bar of the goals came in the last 16 minutes. Cheadle Town are second place despite losing 5-1 at Maine Road, a hat trick by Michael Burke the highlight of the afternoon for the home side. Tom Croughan of Rylands was also a hat trick hero in his side's 4-0 win at Stockport Town, and they are level on points with Cheadle Heath Nomads, who won 3-0 at home to FC Oswestry Town helped by two goals from Stephen Kirby, and Wythenshawe Town who won 3-0 at Barnton.
