THE BOSS ANDY CLARKSON “ IM HOPING WE CAN GET MAXIMUM POINTS TOADY AND PRODUCE THE KIND OF FOOTBALL WE’VE BEEN PLAYING RECENTLY ” I would like to welcome the players and officials from Hanley town for today's match .

Our last game against Hanley at their place we fielded a young side plus had a very depleted squad that day and it was one to forget. I'm hoping we can get maximum points today and produce the kind of football we've been playing recently. Hope you all enjoy the match.

Clarky

Saturday 19th January 2019 / The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:60 Squires Gate returned to winning ways over the weekend beating Abbey Hey 4-1 at The Brian Addison Stadium. Gate put aside the leagues bottom side with ease with three goals in the first half in what was a controlled performance from Andy Clarkson's side. A positive start was made by Clarkson's men who stamped their authority on the game early on. Dean Ing was in the right place on his return to the side but he was caught offside from Adam Sumner's deep cross into the box. The opening goal came after good build up play through Gate's midfield, Ryan Charnley took the ball to the byline and crossed to find Riccardo Egidi for the strikers fifth goal of the season. Dean Ing had an eye for goal and took aim after 20 minutes but his hard drive kept rising and clipped the top of the crossbar. Ing wasn't to miss a second time though as he doubled Gate's lead in the 24th minute. He was found in the box by a lovely James Boyd cross to head past the keeper. Gate added a third goal just before the break James Boyd again getting another assist as he found Ric Seear in the box with a pin point cross for the striker

Half Time: Squires Gate 3-0 Abbey Hey Gate started the second half as they ended the first with Dean Ing adding a fourth for Gate. He was found on the edge of the box as James Boyd layed the ball into his path and the midfielder drve the ball low into the bottom corner past the keeper. The visitors could have had a goal of their own after 50 minutes but Gate's defence were in the right place to clear the ball off the line, before the linesman flagged for offside. After sitting with a 4-0 lead, the second half just seemed to cruise by for Gate who weren't tested by the visitors who came into the game with two wins in their last three games. Sadly though a rare cleansheet wasn't to come for Gate when two minutes from full time Abbey Hey pulled a goal back. A defensive error allowing Owen Whitehead to be left unmarked at the back post to head in.

AWAY DUGOUT

MICKY MORTON A former player at the Club himself, Mick has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the Club both on and off the field he really does have Hanley Town in his blood. A huge congratulations to Mick, and whilst we know we have a big hill to climb we are confident that through his footballing network and with the full backing of all of our Committee and supporters, Mick will bring about the transformation we have all been eagerly awaiting.

HISTORY OF HANLEY The 1980/81 season saw the club finish in it's worst league position for many years, although the cup competitions were a success - the new Staffordshire FA Vase was introduced by the Staffordshire FA to replace the Intermediate Cup, sixteen clubs from North and South of the County were invited to take part and Hanley Town had the honour of being the first winners defeating Chasetown over two legs. The first leg away at Chasetown ending 0-0, the return leg at Abbey Lane in front of 1000 spectators ended with Hanley winning 2-1. The League Cup was also retained after beating Linotype 2-1. The 1981/82 season saw Hanley Town finally become MidCheshire League Champions in the top division by a six point margin and only two defeats in the league all season,(the league is now known as the Cheshire League). The club’s attempt to defend the Staffordshire FA Vase was almost a success as the club reached the final again only to lose over two legs 2-0 to neighbours Eastwood Hanley. The following three seasons were mediocre, but in 1986/87 and 1987/88 under new manager Peter Ward the seasons provided the club with more success. Two third place finishes in a strong Mid-Cheshire League that had local sides Kidsgrove Athletic, Newcastle Town and Alsager Town in the ranks. The League Cup was won beating a strong Kidsgrove Athletic side 3-1 after extra-time, the Leek Cup and Newcastle Charities Cup were won and the club were inaugural winners of the Congleton Floodlit Cup. The Reserves were Staffordshire Alliance League Premier Division Runners-Up and Premier Cup winners. The club started a youth team playing in the Staffordshire County Minor Youth League - the youth team finished Runners-Up in the League winning the Subsidiary Cup and the Sentinel Shield. In 1988 the club applied for membership in to the North West Counties League, but with new ground grading being introduced at the time the club failed in it's application. With the application to the North West Counties League being rejected there was a mass exodus of players who followed manager Peter Ward to Nantwich Town who were already an established club in the North West Counties League. Former Stoke City, Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra player Terry Lees was given the task of completely rebuilding a new team and over the next few seasons gradually created a team that started to climb the league table, however due to other commitments outside football Terry had to step down in 1994 and so a slow decline ensued with the club close to folding in 1995. Ex Port Vale player Neville Chamberlain became Manager first returning the club to the Mid-Cheshire and in 1998 we made the move back to more of a local football scene - the Midland League (now called Staffordshire County Senior League) made up mainly of North Staffordshire clubs. The clubs fortunes began to improve under the new management team of Darren Stair and Dave Price. A first cup final in 15 years was reached during the 2003/04 season the Midland League Cup Final only to lose to Norton/Adderley Green. Success was finally achieved in 2004/05 season Hanley Town securing a remarkable four trophies in one season the first team winning the treble, becoming Midland League Champions, League Cup and Staffordshire FA Vase winners with the Reserves winning the Leek Cup. The following season the club retained the League title but losing to Ball Haye Green in the Leek Cup. For the 2006/07 season Darren and Dave stepped down as first team managers being replaced by Steve Norris and Dave Wooliscroft who regularly kept the first team in a top five position in the league, reaching a number of semi-finals in cup competitions before they too stepped down for the 2011/12 season to be replaced by Darren's brother Colin Stair and a return for Dave Price to take charge of first team duties. That season the first team won the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division title and the Reserves won the Division 1 title under the guidance of Mark Giblin and Steve Harrison. The 2012/13 season was one of joy and sorrow. Colin Stair and Dave Price guided the first team to a memorable quadruple of titles. The first team became Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division Champions, League Cup winners, Staffordshire FA Vase winners and Leek Cup winners. Tragically with only four league games remaining first team manager Colin Stair suddenly passed away however the team stayed strong for each other, served the Club with great pride and saw out the remaining four games to win the fourth title. It was our former Manager’s ambition to manage the team at a higher level starting in the North West Counties League First Division and for the 2013/14 season the club achieved the necessary ground improvements to make the step up to the North West Counties Football League First Division. Under the management team of Dave Price and Darren Stair in their first season at this level the Club finished a respectable 4th place in the league and reached the final of the First Division Cup only to lose on penalties against Formby. All change again for the team this year with new Manager Dean Owen who hopes to take the team on a successful journey with the main goal being promotion in to the premier league of the North West Counties League. This season is the biggest in the Club history as we embark on yet another exciting venture following the acquisition of 3 new pitches which has enabled us to launch Hanley Town Academy and enter into a corporate sponsorship deal with Abzorded Events. Subsequently our ground is now known as Abzorbed Arena and together with providing fabulous home ground facilities for 15 teams, will play host to community multi-skill session, holiday camps and community fun days. Our fellow team mates have the expertise and experience to set us aside from all other football clubs in the City. Together we will grow and develop and will be known as Staffordshire’s leading Community Club. Only a short time in to the season and once again we have attracted a partnership deal other Clubs only dream of. At Hanley Town we are the prestigious Partners to Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation – the first Club in the Country to be recognised with such a magnificent partnership. This now gives us the opportunity and ability to play host to the Wizard of Dribble Schools and January 2016 sees us fund our first tranche of coaches – 28 in total who will all assist in the launch of our community coaching sessions – sessions that we believe will embrace all youngsters from across the City irrespective of ability or age. Our belief is that today’s youngsters are our future and we are excited to embrace more youngsters through our grassroot pyramid. Our pyramid is one that we are so proud of – we will embrace children as young as 7 and offer them the opportunity to develop through the ages with the overall aim to represent our first team playing at a semi-professional level.

There is nothing like a big name signing to really gee-up supporters, normally in non-league that can be perhaps a squad player from a couple of leagues higher or an ex League Youth team player who still has a picture of himself in the league shirt. It gets the juices flowing with dreams of discovering the next big name. Non-League football is in the middle of a purple patch at the moment, gates are rising and awareness of clubs and the leagues are massive. Only recently in one weekend there were gates of over 4000 at Stockport County, 2900 at AFC Fylde, 3000 at Ebbsfleet, 3500 for Bath City Vs Torquay and the effect is cascading down as fans struggle in times of austerity, although many are coming off their own back rather than just the fact its cheaper than going to watch Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool Man United etal. That is cascading further down the leagues as many clubs in Steps 1-6 report gate increases. As a result, its not uncommon nowadays to see players signing in at clubs to play football rather than just a wage. Don’t get me wrong, its not a new phenomena at all, we can all remember seeing some pretty big names in their day on the non-league scene but the flow seems to be quickening. Let us look at some of the names of late. Let’s start at Billericay last season, they signed Jermaine Pennant Ex-Liverpool, Kevin Foley ex-Wolves and Jamie O’Hara ExWolves. That helped them win the Bostik League and climb into Conference South. Unfortunately, like with many clubs with an enthusiastic owner with money, when that money starts to dwindle, as can that enthusiasm and they’ve struggled this season as those big names left. Cant be to do with lack of money though, right? Lee Trundle of Swansea fame, he moved to Trefelin BGC in the Welsh third Tier in January, now he has been floating around the Welsh leagues for a couple of years now but to sign at that level just to play football is highly admirable. Hendon of the Southern League recently signed Jacob Gardiner-Smith from Zeit St Petersburg (Via St Albans). A few weeks ago on the same day, Ashton Town of the North West Counties League Division One (Step six) signed Pascale Chimbonda, ex-Spurs of course, he signed in on a short term deal. That made headlines all over the place including the front page of l’equipe in France. Ricardo Fuller ex of Stoke City and a proper scorer in his day, he signed in at Step 3 Nantwich Town of the Evostik Northern Premier League. According to one of their staff, he’s as fit as a butchers dog, so he may well get them over the finish line as they aim for Step 2. Let’s not forget David May playing for Bacup a few years back! Once upon a time there were players who were keen to finish as high up as possible, as if there was a stigma for an ex-league player to say he finished at a lower non- league club after his playing days were over. It’s refreshing to see players like Lee Trundle and co still turning out of a weekend to play competitive football and doing a bit for a clubs profile in the process. Non-League football is getting the profile it deserves at the moment as fans drift in seeing the value for money and relaxed atmosphere at a game. Whilst a lot of grounds still maintain character, facilities are improving, many clubs are community entities and their appeal stretches beyond the game as it takes its place in the modern leisure industry. What’s wrong with a bit of Vegas entering the game every now and again? Nothing really! As long as players are doing it for the right reasons, long may it continue.

LAST TIME AT THE BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM SQUIRES GATE

1 0 HANLEY TOWN

ROTHWELL 54 Saturday 21st April 2018 8/The Brian Addison Stadium/Att:80/HT:0-0

Clarkson's side were without Isaac Sinclair, Dan Gray and Jordan Salthouse from the starting line-up as all three represented Lancashire in a semi final. Tarren Moxon came back into the side in an unfamiliar role at left back whilst Joey Mullen came into the side at right back. Gate could have opened the scoring ten minutes into the first half with some clever football. Gary Pett laying the ball back to Dean Ing from Ryan Charnley's cross but Ing's shot could only find Pett and didn't test the keeper. Gary Pett then got in two good attacking positions for Gate. First he beat the offside trap but could only fire wide when he got into the box, then he headed a corner back into the box but nobody in Blue could meet the header. The visitors had a good chance after 30 minutes but Thompson's knockdown could only fall to Gate's keeper. Ryan Charnley and Gary Pett again linked up as the game headed to half time Pett playing a lovely ball across the pitch to find Charnley but he fired over after cutting inside.

Hanley had the last chance of the first half testing Gate twice in quick succession. First a fine save from the keeper denied them before a goal line clearance meant the game went into half time level. Half Time: Squires Gate 0-0 Hanley Town The away side started the second half with calls for a penalty, but the shouts were ignored by the referee who played on. Gate would finally make the break through after 51 minutes. Ryan Charnley’s shot falling to Max Rothwell who made no mistake to stroke the ball past the keeper to give Gate the lead. Another end to end moment saw both teams go close in a short space of time. First Gate denied Hanley with a fine save before both Ryan Charnley and Dean Ing were denied by two great saves. Scott Harries went close with one of Gates last chances of the second half, but his shot was well saved by the Hanley keeper.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid Hugo Varley When a Step 5 side looks for a new manager, experience of having played in Europe’s elite leagues is not usually part of the search criteria. However, Norwich United appear to have pulled off quite a coup with the appointment of new boss Cedric Anselin. The Lyon-born Frenchman boasts a formidable footballing CV, having been part of a Bordeaux side that reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1996 and contained future Ballon d’Or winner Zinedine Zidane, as well as having spells with the likes of Lille and Norwich City. “I have some really special memories of my playing career and met a number of amazing people,” said Anselin “I was very young when I was at Bordeaux and it is strange to think that I was playing alongside someone who would go on to become one of the greatest ever players. “I am very privileged to have those memories but I don’t like to dwell on the past too much. “If you stay stuck in the past then you can’t move on in life and I like to keep looking forward and anticipate my next challenge.” While Anselin’s playing career quickly propelled him to relative stardom, in many respects, his decline came about as quickly as his rise. After leaving the Canaries at the age of 23, the Frenchman went on to have short stays at Ross County, Cambridge United and Lowestoft Town, as well as enduring an illfated period in Bolivia, where he contracted a dangerous case of malaria. As his playing days began to peter out, Anselin continued to fight his own personal demons, which affected him throughout much of his adult life. During one particularly dark moment in 2016 the 41-year-old admits that he came close to taking his own life, before a last-minute phone conversation with former Watford defender and now PFA Chairman Clarke Carlisle provided him with some desperately needed solace. “It was the lowest moment of my life” said Anselin. “I was staring at my phone and I saw Clarke’s name in my contacts list. I am so lucky that he answered because I was in a really dangerous mindset at the time. “I will forever be grateful for what he did for me because he put me on the right track and I got the help that I needed from people who understood what I was going through.” The former midfielder is now determined to move forward and is looking ahead to his new challenge at Norwich United with characteristic ambition and excitement. The Planters, who suffered relegation from the Bostik North Division last season, found themselves on a barren run of form when Anselin was appointed midway through December, a slump which saw the Norfolk club slide down the Eastern Counties Premier Division table. However, a smash and grab win away at Wroxham and battling draws against Gorleston and Godmanchester Rovers over the festive helped to reignite a sense of belief at Plantation Park and the future is looking increasingly bright for the club. The new boss remarked: “Coming into a side that are going through a bad patch is difficult so my initial aim was to steady the ship and quickly put a stop to this losing run.

“You don’t become a bad player overnight and I know that a lot of the lads here possess real quality so it is mainly a matter of helping them to become confident on the pitch again. “From a personal perspective this job is perfect for me because Norfolk is my home and I have spent many years living here now. I am settled and my two children live here so to be managing a team in the area is brilliant.”

AROUND THE LEAGUE .Although wintry weather took its toll on four games on Saturday, the rest of the programme survived to deliver another day of talking points and key moments. The Premier Division continues to be headed by City of Liverpool, whose 4-2 win at Hanley Town maintained their 14 point lead at the top of the table. It wasn't plain sailing for the Purps though, with the teams being tied at 2-2 early in the second half, but goals from Jack Hazlehurst and Craig Cairns in the final half hour clinched the win. Bootle continue to pursue the Purps in second place, with their 2-1 win over Congleton Town also meaning that the Bears dropped to third place. After Anthony Hickey's 12th minute penalty was cancelled out by Dean Warburton's leveller just before the hour, Steven Jones struck the Bucks' winner 12 minutes from time. Barnoldswick Town are in fourth place after picking up a point in a 1-1 draw at Winsford United, with Clayton McDonald putting the Blues ahead and Sean Cookson equalising for Barlick two minutes before half time. Runcorn Town are now level on points with Barlick, rounding off a good week with a 41 win at Charnock Richard. Harry Brazel, Shaun Tuck and Harry Freedman set Town on the road to victory with three first half goals and Simon Thelwell's 88th minute penalty rounded off the win, although Charnock's leading scorer Carl Grimshaw inevitably managed to get on the scoresheet right at the death. Goals from Adam Gilchrist, Joshua Nicholson and Matthew Reid earned Ashton Athletic a 3-0 win at home to Litherland REMYCA that moved them into sixth place, one place ahead of Northwich Victoria, who claimed derby bragging rights with a 3-2 win over 1874 Northwich. The teams were level at the break with Andrew Fitzgerald opening the scoring for Vics and Sam Hare replying for 1874 on the stroke of half time. But goals from Robert Doran and Harvey Whyte put Vics in the driving seat and on the way to their ever win against their local rivals, although Scott McGowan reduced the arrears with a penalty. Dean Ing scored twice in Squires Gate's 4-1 win over bottom of the table Abbey Hey, and Thomas Horner's 55th minute winner ensured that West Didsbury & Chorlton moved three points clear of the drop zone thanks to their 2-1 win over Silsden at Brookburn Road. The other game between Whitchurch Alport and Padiham at Yockings Park ended goalless. The First Division North continues to be headed by Longridge Town, with Jay Hart, Richie Allen and Thomas Ince on target in the 3-1 win over Chadderton at the Mike Riding Ground. Avro remain on their tails though, and remain eight points behind with two games in hand after their 2-0 win at St Helens Town, Ryan Harrison and Louis Potts getting the goals. Lower Breck moved into fourth place with a 2-1 win at Nelson, although they left it late as they trailed to a Kieran Demaine goal for Nelson with eight minutes remaining. But a Jamie Henders equaliser and a 90th minute winner from Leon Arnaslam ensured the points headed back to Merseyside. Prestwich Heys lost ground after going down 2-0 at home to Shelley, a Craig Billington opener and an own goal sending the Yorkshiremen to victory. Carlisle City are now level on points on Heys after their 3-0 home win over Atherton LR, Rob McCartney scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 30. That result keeps LR rooted to the bottom of the table, and Daisy Hill joined them in the relegation zone after going down 3-0 at home to Holker Old Boys, John-Paul Stanway scoring twice for the Stags. AFC Blackpool beat AFC Darwen in a game that was goalless for the first hour, and the other two games in the division ended in 3-3 draws. Shaun Sailor rescued a point for Garstang at home to Cleator Moor Celtic with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, while a penalty from Anthony Shinks eight minutes from the end meant Ashton Town ended all square at Steeton. The twists and turns at the top of the First Division South continued, with just six points separating the top six and Rylands are still on top despite going down 3-0 at home to Vauxhall Motors. Haydn Cooper, Ben Holmes and Joe Brandon were on target for the Motormen who moved into fifth place, just four points off the top. Abbey Hulton United are now just one point behind Rylands, their 4-1 win at St Martins achieved with goals from Curtis Price, Jonathan Beaumont, Sam Luke and Dylan Bath. Stone Old Alleynians remain in fourth place, despite going down 3-2 at home to Sandbach United, for whom Harry Cain struck the winner in the 88th minute. Maine Road made it three wins in a row, although it took a goal in the last minute from Finn Thompson to earn them a 2-1 win over FC Oswestry Town, and in the other game Alsager Town and Barnton shared a 1-1 draw.[Insert text here] Remember if you cannot follow the action live, then visit the Official League website www.hallmarksecurityleague.com for the latest news, results and information.
