HERE’S WHAT THE GAFFERS SAY: LUKE EVANS

MICHAEL EDWARDS

A very big welcome from myself to tonight’s game v Hanley under the lights. We are very pleased to be back home and also pleased to be playing after the washout that we had on Saturday at Whitchurch. I hope that all the supporters, team and staff have travelled safely from Hanley as it is never nice to have to do these journeys especially on a Tuesday night in season to Blackpool. As far as my time at the club is going we are settling in nicely and learning more and more about the players every time we get together. A week Last Tuesday was a fantastic morale boosting result versus Northwich Victoria and it showed us what we already know that the ability and talent of this squad is not in question but it is consistency that will get us the points total that we need to get out of trouble. It was a great feeling to all concerned and it was good to see a spring in everyone’s step after the game. We know what we need to work on but it will take time to implement a style that works for everyone and gives us the results on a regular basis. On the Saturday we travelled to Emley in the Macron cup and unfortunately despite dominating the possession we were unable to turn that into goals and we came up short. The final third seems to be where we are struggling at the minute and not down to personnel just decision making in the final third and picking the right pass and shooting when the opportunity presents itself. If you don’t shoot you can’t score.

Ahead of the game tonight, Michael Edwards spoke to The Gate about Hanley’s recent run of form, expectations from the game, here is his message to the travelling away fans tonight;

Following on from the Emley game was a 0-0 draw away at Litherland people call the games against the so called lesser teams a must win game but for me it was important that we didn’t lose and we didn’t. Along with that we kept a clean sheet and I have to say that Jordan Gidley was unbelievable on the night and rightly deserved his man of the match. We have some tough games coming up none more so than this one against Hanley but we are working hard and we need to keep this unbeaten league run going. With games still in hand a win would be massive and the sooner we can get away from these bottom sides the better for everyone. Many thanks for your continued support and let’s get together and be the 12th man that we need. Enjoy the game! Luke 4

“Our recent form hasn’t been the best, losing our last 3 games, even though 2 were cup games, the other being in the league. I expect the game tonight to be a very tough one as Gate have not had the best start to the season but it’s hard when a new management team come in as players come and go and it is hard to get a settled side but it means that they will have to work twice as hard to get things right which means we also need to be on our game and make sure we show up and don’t get ourselves dragged into the bottom as we were last season because it’s a hard place to get away from. Our lads will be prepared well for tonight ad up for what I think will be a tough game. Cheers, Michael”

WE WELCOME HANLEY TOWN The original Hanley Town were established in the nineteenth century, with their first recorded game being in 1882. They joined the Combination in 1894, but left the league after a single season and subsequently folded in 1912.

The modern Hanley Town initially played on a pitch on Victoria Road, which was leased from the Copestick & Farrell engineering company. Changing rooms were built at the site once the club joined the Staffordshire County League.

The modern club was established in 1966, based on an existing Sunday league pub team named the Trumpet. The new club joined the Longton League for the 1966–67 season, winning it at the first attempt. They the moved up to the Staffordshire County League, winning Division Two in 1967/68 and then Division One the following season, earning promotion to the Premier Division.

However, the club was forced to leave the Victoria Road ground in 1971 when developers took over the site and moved to Eastwood Hanley's Trentmill Road ground. However, when Eastwood Hanley attempted to increase the rent in 1974, the club relocated to Leek Town's Harrison Park. They played there until 1976 when the club moved to its current Potteries Park ground.

Hanley were Premier Division runners-up in their first three seasons in the division, also winning the Premier Cup in 1969/70. They won the league title in 1972/73 and again in 1975/76, after which they joined Division Two of the MidCheshire League. They won the Division Two Cup in 1976/77 with a 1–0 win over Knutsford in the final, and a third-place finish the following season saw them promoted to Division One. They were Division One champions in 1982/83, but after several seasons of mid-table finishes and being refused entry to the North West Counties League in 1988 due to failure to meet the ground grading requirements, they finished bottom of Division One in 1993/94 and dropped into junior football.

In 1996 Hanley returned to the Mid-Cheshire League, joining Division Two. However, after two seasons they switched to the Midland League and in 2004–05 they were Midland League champions. At the end of the season, the league had merged with the Staffordshire County League to form the Staffordshire County Senior League. Hanley were placed in the Premier Division and were the league's inaugural champions in 2005–06 before finishing as runners-up the following season. Hanley were Premier Division runners-up again in 2010/11, before winning back-to-back titles in 2011/12 and 2012/13, after which they were promoted to Division One of the North West Counties League; the 2012/13 season also saw them win the League Cup, the Staffordshire FA Vase and the Leek Cup. In 2014/15 the club finished fourth and qualified for the promotion play-offs; after a 3–1 win over Holker Old Boys in the semi-finals, they lost 5–3 to AFC Darwen in the final. However, the club were Division One champions the following season, earning promotion to the Premier Division. 8

MICHAEL MORTON Michael Morton, was no stranger to Hanley Town when he was named manager back at the start of the year; having joined them at the age of 16 after leaving school, he knows a thing or two about the rise of a club who were playing Staffs Senior League football just six seasons ago. When he was announced manager, Hanley Town were second bottom of the Premier Division, following a run of seven consecutive defeats, which resulted them in parting company with the management team of Simon Bell, Keilan Bond and Martyn Irvine. They turned to Morton, who had spent 17 years at the club as a player. Michael spent five years at Newcastle Town, Stafford Rangers and Leek Town before he returned to Hanley to turn their fortunes around, and speaking to stokesentinel.com when he was appointed he said: “I’ve spent most of my footballing life at Hanley Town, I just love the club and I don’t like what is happening to them at the moment. The club has come a very long way in a short space of time. A lot of time and money has been spent on the ground by a lot of people who have done jobs voluntarily. I’ve even been roped into cutting the grass at times. It is a community club, we have the academy system in place and it’s a club that is going places, but at the moment my focus is winning some games with the first team.” Morton bought back players who had left the club; the likes of Josh Thorpe, Martin Stanyer and John Sheldon, and he had good feedback off most the other players. He was also assistant to Michael Edwards during the 2017/18 season, but admitted he was not an experienced manager when he first took charge of the club. He said to stokesentinel.com; “I’m not an experienced manager at non league level, I did help out last season (2017-18) at Hanley, but I have a lot of contacts in the game and I have spoken to other managers who have given me advice. I honestly think there is enough quality at this club to get us out of the situation that we are in.” Morton steered Hanley Town to a 17th placed NWCFL finish last season.

CHLOE BALL & LIAM WITHEY Speaking to The Gate from Hanley Town this week are fans Chloe Ball & Liam Whitley. They speak about what got them into supporting Hanley, and why they like non league football. First of all, what encouraged you to get into football, and more importantly Hanley Town?

Who has been the toughest opposition you have faced?

Hanley Town youth side when I was younger. I started going to watch them with my mates, as they are the local side.

LW: The football is cheaper, and everyone knows one another and there is a general friendly vibe.

What has been your most memorable moment watching Hanley Town?

Which 3 Hanley players do you think will be ones to watch for Gate today?

CB: Longridge Town was a tough game for Hanley, we went on to lose 3-1, I thought they were very good on the day!

LW: Probably Longridge Town this season. They certainly caused us the most problems. Most of the other home games CB: Originally, I used to watch my dad play for Hanley back in were either even or we were the better side. the 80s, then a few years ago, my son started playing for the academy teams and it started from there. Now I usually at the What do you think makes non league unique? home games and travel to as many of the away games as CB: It has more of a community feel to it, and your support possible. really seems to count for more, when compared with how you LW: I’ve always followed and watched football and played for support a big Premier League club for example.

CB: The Litherland REMYCA game at the end of last season, LW: Wouldn’t you like to know! Not spilling any of our secrets! when Hanley secured a win to stay up. Which 3 NWCFL teams do you think will go up? LW: Promotion from the NWCFL Division 1 to the Premier CB: Whitchurch Alport, 1874 Northwich and Bootle Division about 3 years ago. LW: Hanley, Whitchurch Alport, 1874 Northwich What are your expectations for this season? Prediction for today’s game? CB: Personally, I would like to see us finish in the top half of CB: 2-1 Hanley the table. LW: Promotion - I think we are more than capable of grabbing LW: 3-0 Hanley one of the promotion spots available. 10

Hanley Town 5-1 Holker Old Boys / Sunday 10 April 2016 / Attendance: 88 From the archive this week, we go back to 2016 for Hanley’s game against Holker Old Boys. This is an extract from stickypalms.blogspot.com who writes about his adventures around non league clubs. How many Hanley fans remember this game, here is what he had to say about his visit to Hanley;

We wander in an anti-clockwise direction around the ground. We bump into local football enthusiast Kevin. He's dressed in Hanley Town clobber but also confesses to being a bit of a groundhopper. He's up in Scotland in a few weeks time to tick a few grounds off in the Edinburgh area. Hanley is one of six major towns that joined together to form the city of Stoke on-Trent in 1910. It is well known for pottery-making and coal mining. It's a two mile drive to Abbey Lane the home of North West Counties League Division One leaders Hanley Town. It's £4 each on the gate and £1 for a programme, a friendly official points us in the direction of the clubhouse.

A goal of extreme quality which doesn't befit the game is scored on 37 minutes by Crewe Alexandra on loan striker Jonathan Higham who drills home the ball into the bottom corner of the net following good work by Lassana Sidibe, the younger brother of former Stoke City striker Mamady Sidibe. It certainly gets Olly wagging his tail. The weather has turned with driving rain replacing sun-kissed skies. We dive for cover in the clubhouse. Tea and coffee are £1 per cup. I bump into a Halifax Town supporter, who's also a groundhopper from York. He has spent the morning in Buxton and driving around the High Peak area of Derbyshire. He's not particularly impressed with the stadia or standard of football. He has more camera equipment than Lord Lichfield. We shelter in the Colin Stair Stand as Hanley turn it on in the second half and run riot. They race into 4-0 goal lead. They even manage to fluff a penalty before running out 5-1 winners. A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S GAME SQUIRES GATE

HANLEY TOWN

Having won only one game in six games against today’s visitors, and a tough run in their previous six, it doesn't bode well for Gate.

Hanley have been in the same position as Gate, they have played some of the league’s strongest sides in their previous six matches, and an impressive 2-1 win against Rylands.

Mullen (doubt) could be out for today’s game after his injury at Emley AFC

They will be looking to get as far away from the bottom half as possible.

Egidi (6)

Ahmadi (7)

Saturday 26th January 2019 / The Brian Addison Stadium / Attendance: 45 Going into this game back in January, both teams were on different sorts of form. Hanley were looking to pick up some points in order to avoid the drop, and both sides started in a competitive manner looking to size each other up. It took six minutes for the hosts to take the lead, as Egidi made it two goals in two games, bundling the ball in the back of the net. The lead didn’t last long though as, straight from kick off, the visitors equalised with Ahmadi given too much time to cut inside and beat Ben Fletcher. Gate were restricted to long shots as the Hanley defence closed up for the majority of the game, first to every ball, constantly in the face of Ing and Egidi. An error from Chapman saw a back pass straight to Seear with 2 minutes from home but could not curl the ball into the empty net.

NORTHWICH VICS Reed (3)

In the 4th minute, Jamie Reed was on hand to place the ball into the back of the net after Jordan Gidley could only push out a strike from Tom Kilifin straight to him. However, Gate upped the tempo, and started winning the midfield battle. In the 18th minute, Scott Reed, in the Vics' net had to make a great save tipping the ball over the net from a great curling effort by Ing. Gate then forced a series of corners and the pressure was building, and in the 25th minute, Vics were again indebted again to Scott Reed as he pulled off a fantastic reflex save to push a close range effort around the post. However, there was nothing he could do three minutes later, as Ing fired a volley from pithing the penalty area into the far corner of the net for a deserved equaliser. Vics had a goal disallowed in the second half, due to offside. Some very good saves from both keepers kept the score level, before the ball fell to Boyd who calmly slotted the ball into the empty net from 40 yards or so into an empty net with minutes left.

SQUIRES GATE Boyd (77)

Gate made a great start to the game and could have opened the scoring after just one minute. Josh Pollard raced to the byline and whipped a ball right across the face of goal, but there was no body there to meet it. Gate again went close this time down the other flank. Emley came into the game more towards the end of the half with several chances. First a quick freekick was taken but Ryan Dodd was alive to it and cleared. It was Emley though who taught Gate a lesson in finishing. Robert Boardman picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he turned and fired low past Jordan Gidley. Sub Rufus was then fouled on the edge of the box giving Gate a great chance to test the keeper. James Boyd stepped up, lifted the ball over the wall and past the keeper to level the game for Gate.

90 90

It was the battle of the freekicks when two minutes later Bordmon fired a freekick direct into the top corner to trump Boyd's earlier effort and win the game for Emley.

MATTHEW FARNWORTH Speaking to The Gate this week, is midfielder Matt Farnworth who has recently joined from AFC Darwen. He speaks about his career, what player he would love to play alongside and what he expects from the rest of the season. First of all, what got you into football? What encouraged you to start playing? My dad would've been the one who got me into it initially, he was a decent player himself and I vaguely remember watching him in some vet's games when I was a kid. My older brother was very good from a young age and I always wanted to try and be like him so that's really what encouraged me to play. Did you have any footballing idols growing up? Which team did you support?

the fitness levels and physical side of things from them was a step above any level I'd played at before, that was a tough game. Individual players, I came up against Reece Brown (Wes's brother) a couple of times and never enjoyed that, he was overly physical and quite dirty. What would you say your favourite goal of all time is? David Beckham’s free kick vs Greece What has been your most memorable game, and game is? Winning the Lancashire Shield with Ashton. It capped off an amazing season, and the team we had was a brilliant group. The best game was arguably the semi final when we beat Chorley but a last minute winner against Radcliffe Borough in the final was pretty sweet too.

The obvious one, David Beckham, idolised him as a kid and You can pick any player to play alongside in the world. still do now. Teddy Sherringham was another favourite. I don't really have any superstitions but I'm pretty OCD with things so for example if I am putting tape on my socks, I have to go round each leg the same amount of times. How do you mentally prepare yourself for a game?

You are DJ before a game, what is the first song on your playlist? Who has the worst music taste ?

Personally I think about it as little as possible, I'm best when I going out clearheaded and not over thinking things, so I try and keep it as simple as possible before getting out on the pitch.

Before games I usually like hip hop music. Remember the name by Fort Minor is my favourite pre game song. Worst taste in the team is definitely Jordan Gidley, awful.

Who are the toughest opponents you have faced in your career? One player you have hated going up against? 20

Sam Staunton-Turner, and James Boyd from Gate. Premier League legends would be Seaman, Kompany and Aguero.

I played in an MLS tournament against Chicago Fire when I was in America. I think we lost 2-0 on the day but I remember

Prediction for today’s game? Every game is massive for us from this point on, and I think the boys will perform today against a quality side. 2-1 Gate.

Despite being dominant throughout the game, Litherland struggled to created any clear chances, until Diggle latched onto a ball and his touch rebounded off Gidley in goal back to the feet of the striker who shot was scuffed allowing gate to clear. Not long after Litherland were down to ten men when Jake Connor was shown a straight red for a risky challenge just before half time. This led to Gate's only real chance of the first half with the resulting free kick from the previous challenge allowing a shot from long range going to just wide of Ben Morrow's goal. REMYCA started the second half how they began the first. McShane twisted and turned his marker to cross a low ball to Diggle, but the striker's just caught the outside of the post .With the numerical disadvantage, it would seem like the opposition would take control of the game again but Litherland dominated the second half which then lead Litherland to have another great chance with Diggle headed the ball to the feet of McShane, who in turn played through captain Ashton Clements, The skipper's shot in the area was inches away from the goal, going just wide.

CHRIS GARVEY Speaking to The Gate this week is Southampton fan, and groundhopper Chris Garvey who is also a coach at Downton FC who play in the Wessex League Division 1. Here is what he had to say about his groundhopping adventures. First of all, what encouraged you to get into football, and more importantly your groundhopping adventures? I fell in love with football as a very young boy, listening to the radio with my Grandad. We used to listen to Southampton games when they were on the local radio station. I started my groundhopping a lot later, when I fell out of love with Premier League football, and the money ruining the game. Did you have any football shirts growing up? Who was your footballing idol? As a lad, I only had Southampton shirts. We had a cracking few shirts in the 80s. As for idols, I had many as a boy, I loved to watch Peter Beardsley for England, and of course Matt Le Tissier for the Saints! Which team did you support growing up? What made you choose them? I have always supported Southampton, I never got a choice. Mainly my Grandad, as he is season ticket holder. He left my mums wedding to go and watch the Saints play, legend!!! Which non league club do you live closest to? Downton FC is my nearest non league club which I follow, I coach with the 1st team and reserve team and have done for the last few years. I also coach one of their youth teams (U13). Downton are at step 6 in the pyramid, and play in the Wessex League Division 1, and we currently sit top of the league. Our ground is called the Brian Whitehead Sports Ground! How many grounds have you visited? 497. Very close to making 500 now. Do you remember the first game you attended. What was the score? The first game I attended was back in 1982, when Saints played Coventry City at The Dell. We won 8-2, and I was hooked!! Shame it has been painful ever since watching the Saints! The best and worst game you have ever watched? Best - England v Holland in Euro ‘96. England that night, were unbelievable and won 4-1. Atmosphere was amazing in the ground, and in the pubs around Wembley. Worst - Many watching Southampton, but Tranmere away still haunts me to this day. We were winning 3-0 at halftime, in the cup. But in true Saints style, we go and lose 4-3 to a side in a lower league. I then had to drive home, and go to work. What makes non league unique to you? Non league is unique and only this special in Britain. I love the thousands of volunteers within clubs who give up so much time, for free, for the club, to normally just keep them going. This is what football should be all about - community!

What is the best goal you’ve ever seen live and general? Gascoigne against Scotland in Euro ‘96 or Le Tissier against Blackburn away back in the mid 90s. Also remember watching Diego Maradona’s goal against England in the World Cup on TV as a young lad - cheat. Your favourite grounds? League - Spurs new ground is special, and worth a visit. Non League - I love Crook Town in Durham, but there are some cracking non league grounds in the North East. Abroad - Borussia Dortmund. What is your usual matchday routine when visiting a new ground? I normally go to games with my youngest lad Harry (12). I love to get a programme, and a pin badge if the clubs do one. Have you ever visited any games abroad? What makes the experience different in other countries? I love to go to Germany to watch football and drink a few beers with my mates, and youngest lad. We try to go 3 or 4 times a season. German football is like football was here when I was younger. Not ruined by money, superb old grounds. You can also stand at games and you can have a beer while watching the game. Also the atmosphere at games are amazing, they sing all game, sadly the Premier League is like going to the theatre nowadays!! Have you visited any obscure grounds? Lewes FC is very unique in terms of it’s name, it is called the “Dripping Pan” and the way the ground is sunk into the ground. It is worth a visit. Have you visited Squires Gate before? Sadly not, but it is definitely on the list to do. What grounds are you planning on visiting over the next few months? I want to finally complete the 92 this season, with just 10 grounds to do. I also have a trip to Germany in January to watch Mainz and Darmstadt. Will also sneak a few non league grounds in too. On game 56 of the season already! Southampton Expectations for Southampton for this season? Sadly not high, we can’t keep selling our best players to the highest bidder (normally Liverpool) I think we will survive the drop though. Your favourite season? At “The Dell” - 1994-95, we finished 10th in Division One St Marys - 2015-16 when we finished 6th and qualified for the Europa League. In the Premier League, which grounds do you hate visiting and why? Crystal Palace ad Burnley, as the views from the stands are awful, and the place that the away fans are housed. 23

The Weaver Stadium Scorers: Bourne (39)

Nantwich secured their place in the first round for only the third time in their history, after a goal from Troy Bourne just before the interval.

It was from one of these, that the goal came on 39 minutes, as James Lawrie broke down the left, and had his low cross diverted by Bourne.

It was the visitors who had the most of the first half possession, but the continuous attempts were easily dealt with by the Nantwich keeper.

Henderson thought he had levelled for the visitors as his header beat Hall, but the assistant had raised his flag for offside.

A look into non league grounds...in Spain Taken from espanaestadios.com, blogger Mik Wood writes about his visit to Santa Cruz de La Palma. If you have ever wondered what non league grounds are like in other countries, then read this blog or even visit the website, Mik writes some superb pieces on what to expect from the lower leagues in Spain. Santa Cruz de La Palma (Nuevo Silvestre Carrillo)

Pictured above: Campo Silvestre Carrillo during the 1990s. Picture taken from the blog. This extraordinary stadium, carved into the side of a hill at the top of a steep valley. It is a remarkable achievement for such a small and remote club, but CD Mensajero, used to remarkable achievements, having played at Segunda B for a decade from the early 1990's, and very nearly reaching La Segunda. Mensajero’s history can be traced to 1916, when a group of friends in Santa Cruz de la Palma formed a youth team. The team was officially registered with the federation on 6 January 1922, making it the oldest club on the island of La Palma. A date disputed by the club's cross-city rivals SD Tenisca, who have a different take on the story, saying that Mesanjero was formed by former players from Tenisca in 1924, making them the island's oldest club. It was the first of many disagreements that pepper the relationship between the two clubs. Mensajero established a senior team in 1939, thanks to the club's first president Silvestre Carrillo and both stadiums that have stood on this site have been dedicated to him.

26

expense of running a relatively small club at a national level began to take its toll and with dramatic cuts in funding, Mensajero was relegated at the end of the 2001-02 season, 11 points behind the penultimate team, CD Onda and 18 points from the safety zone. Two years later, they dropped down to the regional leagues, vacated Silvestre Carrillo and set up home at the Municipal Estadio Bajamar, but also played matches at the Estadio Virgen de Las Nieves, home of SD Tenisca. Redevelopment of the stadium took four years to complete and Mensajero reinaugurated their home on 14 January 2007 with a match against UD Orotava. What of the stadium? Well, due to the steep valley-side to the south side of the pitch and the sheer drop to the north, the majority of the seating has always been found at either end of the stadium. Prior to the redevelopment in 2003, there was a covered stand at the east end of the ground. A narrow strip of terracing ran along the north side of the pitch, which joined the terrace behind the west end goal. Such was the size of the project, the club moved out whilst the north & east sides were excavated and rebuilt to include office space under the new, larger terraces. The old changing rooms that sat in the south east corner were also replaced. Following redevelopment, the basic orientation of the stadium remained unchanged. There is however, a more substantial area of seating behind the east goal and this now arcs around to the north side. The east end no longer features a roof, something, which the original redevelopment plan included, but due the financial difficulties that the club experienced, the project was scaled down. The north terrace tapers away to a single line of seating as you head to the west. The West terrace remains relatively unaltered from the original stadium. The players changing facilities are found in a single storey building on the south side of the pitch.

The club spent roughly 70 years playing at regional level, with But it is from the outside the stadium that you appreciate the various degrees of success. It won the Tercera title for the magnitude of the task of building a stadium in this location. As Canary Islands in 1985, arriving at the national stage seven you walk up Avenida del Puente from the centre of town, the years later, after winning promotion to Segunda B. stadium looms over you like a grounded ocean liner. During the following ten seasons, Mensajero appeared in the Should CD Mensajero ever return to the heights they achieved play-offs twice, but failed to progress on each occasion. The in the 1990's, they will have a stadium that is ship-shape.

Andy King DID YOU KNOW? On 29 October 1997, a young 19 year old called Gianluigi Buffon made his debut for the Italian national team in a 1-1 away draw with Russia in a qualifying play off match for the 1998 World Cup. Buffon secured the goalkeeping position for the 2022 World Cup, and remained the Italian number one for over a decade, making over 150 appearances.
