Tuesday 17th April 2018 // The Brain Addison Stadium // Attendance:60 Squires Gate extended their unbeaten run to eight games on Tuesday night but needed a goal late into added time to do so. In a rather lack lustre first half at The Brian Addison Stadium chances were a rarity. The visitors best chances fell on 15 minutes when a mistake in the back line allowed Jack Coop in behind. Ben Fletcher was equal to the striker though and came out to save well at his feet. Gates best chance of the first half fell to in-form striker Gary Pett. Unfortunately for the Gate front man, Maine Road keeper Ryan Livesey was of his line early to snuff out the danger. The second half saw the visitors take the lead early on in the half. Striker Jack Coop reacting quickest to fire last Ben Fletcher. It took Gate just under ten minutes to find an equaliser against the side in the relegation places. A foul on the edge of the box saw Gary Pett step up and fire an inch perfect freekick right into the top corner.

The visitors were reduced to ten men in the 63rd minute when Jon Mason was sent of for a foul on Isaac Sinclair who was on an impressive run into the box. Unfortunately for Gate, Gary Pett couldn’t replicate his early freekick and fired over the bar. Gate were denied with a great double save minutes later from the Maine Road keeper. First sub Connor Finlayson was denied before an even better save stopped Gary Pett who was denied with one hand. The visitors would grab what looked to be a late winner in the 82nd minute through Ben Davison, the same player who equalised when the two sides met at the end of last month. He was on hand to turn in the second cross after the first had been cleared to give Maine Road the late lead. That lead would last until the 95th minute when Gate would score a last gasp equaliser. Sub Connor Finlayson closing down the keeper whose cross came off his back and pooped over the Maine Road number one dropping into the goal.

THE BOSS

MICHEAL EDWARDS Michael and his Hanley town team has now been in the league for 2 season and they settle in very very well. What with a high finished last year Hanley would hope for more off same this season. Micheal has start and ended the season very strong with always being in and around the top 6 for quite a lot of th season. Him and his team will know gate are no walk over as last year when they played gate at their home ground we saw 8 goals but spilt evenly between the two teams. Micheal and andy will hope to show there fans that it will be good as that but both manager will be hoping they get the 3 points this time so that they can both keep up with the team in and around the top 6

BREIF HISTORY The clubs fortunes began to improve under the new management team of Darren Stair and Dave Price. A first cup final in 15 years was reached during the 2003/04 season the Midland League Cup Final only to lose to Norton/Adderley Green. Success was finally achieved in 2004/05 season Hanley Town securing a remarkable four trophies in one season the first team winning the treble, becoming Midland League Champions, League Cup and Staffordshire FA Vase winners with the Reserves winning the Leek Cup. The following season the club retained the League title but losing to Ball Haye Green in the Leek Cup. For the 2006/07 season Darren and Dave stepped down as first team managers being replaced by Steve Norris and Dave Wooliscroft who regularly kept the first team in a top five position in the league, reaching a number of semi-finals in cup competitions before they too stepped down for the 2011/12 season to be replaced by Darren's brother Colin Stair and a return for Dave Price to take charge of first team duties. That season the first team won the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division title and the Reserves won the Division 1 title under the guidance of Mark Giblin and Steve Harrison. The 2012/13 season was one of joy and sorrow. Colin Stair and Dave Price guided the first team to a memorable quadruple of titles. The first team became Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division Champions, League Cup winners, Staffordshire FA Vase winners and Leek Cup winners. Tragically with only four league games remaining first team manager Colin Stair suddenly passed away however the team stayed strong for each other, served the Club with great pride and saw out the remaining four games to win the fourth title. It was our former Manager’s ambition to manage the team at a higher level starting in the North West Counties League First Division and for the 2013/14 season the club achieved the necessary ground improvements to make the step up to the North West Counties Football League First Division. Under the management team of Dave Price and Darren Stair in their first season at this level the Club finished a respectable 4th place in the league and reached the final of the First Division Cup only to lose on penalties against Formby. All change again for the team this year with new Manager Dean Owen who hopes to take the team on a successful journey with the main goal being promotion in to the premier league of the North West Counties League. This season is the biggest in the Club history as we embark on yet another exciting venture following the acquisition of 3 new pitches which has enabled us to launch Hanley Town Academy and enter into a corporate sponsorship deal with Abzorded Events. Subsequently our ground is now known as Abzorbed Arena and together with providing fabulous home ground facilities for 15 teams, will play host to community multi-skill session, holiday camps and community fun days. Our fellow team mates have the expertise and experience to set us aside from all other football clubs in the City. Together we will grow and develop and will be known as Staffordshire’s leading Community Club. Only a short time in to the season and once again we have attracted a partnership deal other Clubs only dream of. At Hanley Town we are the prestigious Partners to Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation – the first Club in the Country to be recognised with such a magnificent partnership. This now gives us the opportunity and ability to play host to the Wizard of Dribble Schools and January 2016 sees us fund our first tranche of coaches – 28 in total who will all assist in the launch of our community coaching sessions – sessions that we believe will embrace all youngsters from across the City irrespective of ability or age. Our belief is that today’s youngsters are our future and we are excited to embrace more youngsters through our grassroot pyramid. Our pyramid is one that we are so proud of – we will embrace children as young as 7 and offer them the opportunity to develop through the ages with the overall aim to represent our first team playing at a semi-professional level.

SATURDAY 8H OCTOBER 2016

he homeside would make a good start to the game and took the lead after nine minutes. A freekick into the back post was knocked down into the six yard box and scrambled in by Daniel Cope. To say the game was slowed down by the ref would be an understatement. Both teams kept conceding things that wouldnt even be a foul in other games leading to lots of freekicks in the first half. Luckily, either team couldn't make the most of the freekicks throughout the game. Hanley Town could have added a second after 24 minutes. A long goal kick got in behind Gate but Ben Seear did well to to tip the shot over. Two minutes later though and Hanley would grab a second. The ball sent through the middle found Cope. Ben Seear in net did well to stop the ball but couldn't keep hold of it allowing Sean Mountfold an easy tap in. Gate would grab a goal of their own on 30 minutes. Mark Thornber playing a lovely ball down the wing to Brett Dawson who burst into the box with pace to delicately chip the ball over the keeper. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't build any momentum from the goal before half time to get a second. The homeside grabbed themselves a third goal just two minutes into the second half. A lovely bit of movement down the right found Cope in the middle unmarked and with Gate standing off him he fired home for his second of the game. The homeside were then awarded a penalty on 62 minutes for what looked like handball by Paul Alexander. Stand in keeper Ben Seear would produce a moment he'd never forget when he dived the right way to his right to pull off a superb save that any keeper would be proud of. After one Seear's good work down one end Gate almost grabbed a goal back down the other through Ric. He reached Paul Alexander's cross in but just headed wide. Gate introduced Ryan Riley who had an instant impact on 80 minutes. He drove forward from midfield unchallenged and found Dawson but his cross was ruled to have crossed the line and gone out. The homeside were then reduced to 10 men. A straight red card for a kick out. Gate would then make that man advantage pay when they grabbed another goal back. Sub Mark Buchan cutting back inside and crossing to the back post to find Ric Seear who powered a header in. Gate would then concede late on. A poor clearance by the otherwise faultless Ben Seear fell straight to their midfielder who passed the ball into Cope's feet for him to score his hatrick

SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER 2016

Gate made a good start to the game and with a bit of luck could have gone ahead after a minute. A corner swung in was cleared away by Hanley after several Gate players had swung to shoot at it. Hanley then had chances of their own first they played a short corner but that was cut out by Richards in the box. Then their winger fizzed a brilliant ball across the box but nobody could get a touch. Against the run of play the visitors would take the lead. The ball played inside to the unmarked Angelo Errico for his to unleash a fierce shot into the top corner. As quickly as Hanley opened the scoring Gate instantly leveled it up. Joe Noblet's corner fell out to the feet of Andrew Richards and with shouts of offside from the Hanley players he slotted the ball under the keepers legs for his first of the season. Gate then took the lead a minute after leveling. Ryan Riley who impressed and scored mid week against Chorley, continued his good form with a strike that almost broke the back of the net. Gate then could have extended their lead on 19 minutes, Ric Seear fouled just outside the box, Joe Noblet stepped up but fired just the wrong side of the post. Noblet then had another chance four minutes later when Ryan Riley lay the ball off to him on the edge of the box but his drive was the wrong side of the post. Just as Gate were playing some of their best football Hanley would level the game. Sean Mountford heading in after he was found inside the box, unmarked. Gate had several corners and free kicks but struggled to convert any of the chances they'd created from them. The best of them came on 32 minutes. First of all Ric Seear's shot was blocked on the line. Then from the follow up corner Seydou Bamba rose highest but his header was just wide. It would be Hanley Town who would end the half in the lead. A Hanley player seemingly looking for contact going down several times before the referee judged Ryan Stayte to have tripped him in the box. Angelo Errioc then stepped up from the spot and fired past Fletcher. Ryan Riley did well after the break to get behind Hanley's defence but nobody could get a touch on his low cross into the box. Two minutes later Gate forced the Hanley keeper into a superb save. Seydou Bamba again rising highest to meet the corner but the keeper somehow managed to claw the ball away into the path of Danny Penswick but his shot could only find the side netting. Ryan Tanser almost made an instant impact when he entered the field on his birthday weekend when he was whiskers away from Jake Highams cross into the box. But it would be Hanley who would grab another goal to extend their lead. Gate pilling men forward for a corner were caught with a quick counter from their own corner, striker Jonathan Higham finishing off the move for his third goal in three games. Despite the visitors extending their lead, Gate's heads never dropped. They grabbed a goal back on 78 minutes through striker Ric Seear. Back from an injury he twisted and turned his way through the defence before curling the ball into the top corner to give Gate hope. Previously mentioned Ryan Tanser did manage to grab a goal on his birthday weekend with five minutes left to play. Fellow sub Ben Seear with a superb cross to find Tanser in the middle, he got the lightest of touches to side foot the ball in and level the game for Gate. The last ten minutes was all one way

traffic for Gate but they just couldn't make the break through in a tense end to a brilliant game of football.

MACTH PREVIEW WITH MARK ASHMORE

Last time out Gate made it eight games unbeaten on Tuesday night, rescuing a late draw against Hanley Town. The visitors opened the scoring straight after half time when Jack Coop reacted quickest in the box to slot past Ben Fletcher. It took Gate just under ten minutes to find an equaliser against the side in the relegation places. A foul on the edge of the box saw Gary Pett step up and fire an inch perfect freekick right into the top corner. The visitors were reduced to ten men in the 63rd minute when Jon Mason was sent off for a foul on Isaac Sinclair who was on an impressive run into the box. Unfortunately for Gate, Gary Pett couldn’t replicate his early freekick and fired over the bar. The Away Team Hanley Town come into this game 5th in the league having won three of their last six games. This season they've won twenty one of their thirty seven games, losing ten and drawing six games. Hanley's last game saw them lose 3-0 away at City of Liverpool. An own goal got the scoring under way to give the homeside the 1-0 lead going into half time. John Connolly then doubled the homesides lead before Anthony Brown rounded of the scoring in the 64th minute. The form table for Hanley Town looks like LLDWWW placing them 8th in the form table. The wins came against Ashton Athletic, Bootle and AFC Darwen, the losses came against Congleton Town and City of Liverpool whilst the draw came against 1874 Northwich. Last Time We Met The two sides last met at the start of the season with Hanley winning 4-0. Neville Thompson opened the scoring after just 16 minutes for the homeside when he had too much time inside the box to tap in. As quick as the first goal went in, the second would follow. Dan Cope this time free in the box to slot past Ben Fletcher after the cross from the left wasn't closed down. Again from Gate's attack it would be the homeside who'd capitalise. Dawson's corner was caught by the keeper who sent a long ball and found Hanley's attack. Theo Stair on hand to fire past Fletcher to make it 3-0. With the last kick off the game the homeside would undo all Gate's good second half work. A poor clearance falling to the Hanley right back who found the feet of Dan Cope, Cope with a sharp turn and shot to beat Fletcher. You can read the full match report here - Hanley Town 4-0 Squires Gate Head to Head The two teams have met 3 times since 2016. The two sides met at the start of the season with Hanley showing their quality winning 4-0. Hanley lead the way with two wins, whilst Gate have yet to win a game between the two sides. One games ended in a draw, that was when the two sides met at The Brian Addison Stadium, the game ending 4-4. NWCFL NEWS As we head towards the business end of the season, at long last sunshine was evident at grounds across the league on Saturday, giving a more traditional April backdrop to important games at the top and bottom of both divisions. There was one cup tie in the fixture schedule, and the Macron Cup Semi Final first leg at the Ambitek Stadium ended goalless between Irlam and Burscough. In the Premier Division, six of the seven games ended in away wins, and one of those was at Mossie Park where Runcorn Linnets moved ten points clear at the top after a 2-0 win at Charnock Richard. Kristian Holt and Freddie Potter were on target for Linnets, who now need 11 points from their last six games to secure the league title. Nearest challengers Widnes didn't have a game, but Runcorn Town closed the gap between themselves and Widnes to four points with a 1-0 win over AFC Liverpool at the Pavilions, thanks to a goal in the 21st minute from Mark Reed. City of Liverpool moved to within three points of Hanley Town in fourth place with a 3-1 win at Barnoldswick Town, two goals from Anthony Brown and one from John Connolly earning victory for the Purps. First half strikes from Gary Pett and Ryan Charnley saw Squires Gate through to a 2-0 win at Ashton Athletic, and second half goals from Tom Bailey and Joseph Shaw earned West Didsbury & Chorlton their third away win in succession this time by 2-1 at Northwich Victoria. A ding-dong affair at the Ruby Civil Arena ended with Congleton Town turning a 3-2 half time deficit into a 4-3 win over Padiham, with two goals in two second half minutes from William Hasler-Cregg and Emini Adegbenro proving to be decisive. Maine Road remain deep in relegation trouble after going down 1-0 at home to Winsford United, with Blues player-manager Lee Duckworth scoring the only goal of the game. In Division One, Silsden AFC are back on top and continue to set the pace following Friday night's 2-1 win at Nelson, Aidan Kirby on target twice for the Cobbydalers. Litherland REMYCA remain right on Silsden's coat tails, two points behind in second place, after a 4-1 win at St Helens Town, although they had an early shock when Thomas Grimshaw gave Town a 5th minute lead. But two Colin McDonald goals before half time, a third from Josh Hamilton just before the hour and a Colin Quirk penalty in the last minute delivered the three points for Remy. Prestwich Heys moved into third place after an 8-1 home win over Stockport Town, with a John Main hat trick the highlight of a good afternoon for Heys. The big win moved them ahead of Whitchurch Alport, who lost 4-1 at New Mills in probably the most eye catching result of the afternoon, with Dennis Sheriff grabbing a first half hat trick for the Millers. Sandbach United are fifth but had to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw at AFC Blackpool, when Zac Hargreaves cancelled out Stuart Tulloch's opener for United. Alsager Town kept their place in the final play-off spot but left it late to secure a 2-1 win at Atherton LR. The Bullets were ahead at the break through a Jordan Conley effort, but Theodore Kidd levelled for LR with a penalty 17 minutes from time. But Taylor Attrell's 90th minute winner clinched victory for Alsager who would otherwise have been edged out of the play-off places by Cammell Laird 1907, who won 1-0 at Chadderton thanks to Joshua Maldon's goal 15 minutes from time. FC Oswestry Town dealt a potentially fatal blow to hopes that Holker Old Boys may have had of making the play-offs, sending them back on the long trip to Cumbria pointless after Sam Spridgeon, Joe Newton, Tom Rowlands and Brendan Price all got on the scoresheet in Town's 4-0 win. However, another club who made a long journey had better luck, with a goal in each half from Joshua Tune earning Abbey Hulton United a 2-1 win at Carlisle City. A hat trick from Daniel Needham earned Eccleshall a 3-2 win over Bacup Borough at Pershall Park, a result that means Borough are now third bottom and just three points ahead of Daisy Hill, who moved off bottom place thanks to a Michael Gervin goal seeing them to a 1-0 win over Cheadle Town at New Sirs. THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

Sometimes, You Have To Spend Money To Make Money

1960

.On 15 March 1960, Manchester City paid a club record fee of £55,000 to acquire Denis Law for the first--but not last--time. Twenty years old at the time, Law had spent the previous five years at Huddersfield Town, who were in the top flight when he signed for them in 1955, but were relegated to Division Two the following year. The drop opened up playing time for Law, who earned his first start in December 1956 and went on to score a total of 19 goals in 91 appearances for the Terriers. That was enough to attract the interest of several clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool (whose manager, Bill Shankly was the boss at Huddersfield Town from 1956 to 1959). But City got his signature in March 1960 for £55,000, more than doubling the club's previous record of £25,000 set in 1950 when they bought Roy Paul from Swansea City. Law spent a little over one year at City, scoring 21 goals in the 1960-61 season. In the summer of 1961, he left for Torino, who paid a then-British record fee of £100,000. He returned to Manchester one year later to play for United, spending eleven seasons at Old Trafford, where he was named the 1964 European Player of the Year. But he rejoined City on a free transfer in 1973 for his last season. While there, he scored his last competitive goal in an April 1974 match that helped seal United's relegation that year.

MORE BRACES THAN AN ORTHODONIST

1974

On 14 March 1974, Zaire won their second Africa Cup of Nations, beating Zambia 2-0 in a replay. Zaire won their first cup in 1968 when, playing under the name Congo-Kinshasa, they beat Ghana 1-0. A first-round exit followed in 1970, then a fourth-place finish in 1972. In 1974, they reached the final in large part due to midfielder Ndaye Mulamba (pictured), who scored five goals in the earlier rounds, including the match-winner in their 3-2 victory over Egypt in the semifinals. He had a pair of goals in that game, making it his second brace of the tournament. He got a third in the originally-scheduled final against Zambia, played at the International Stadium in Cairo on 12 March. It ended 2-2 after extra time to force a replay. When the teams reconvened in Cairo two days later, Mulamba got his fourth brace, scoring in the 30th and 76th minutes to lead Zaire to a 2-0 win. His 9-goal total was the best of the tournament. Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have never returned to the final, though they did finish in third place in 1998.

A GOOD REASON TO GET THERE EARLY On 13 March 2011, attendees at Milan's match against Bari witnessed a warm-up routine that seemed unreal--because it was. Milan, who were sitting at the top of the Serie A table while riding an eleven-game unbeaten streak, hosted Bari, the league's bottom team, at the San Siro. While the crowd filtered in, players from both teams took the pitch to warm up. And that's when things got weird. Instead of the usual warm-up routine, the players engaged in some eccentric activities. Several of them started dancing, with Gennaro Gattuso pairing up with the referee for a bit of ballet. Clarence Seedorf started boxing and Zlatan Ibrahimović tossed a frisbee around. One player donned a swim cap and pretended to swim, while another lay down on the pitch with a newspaper. As it turned out, all of the players were look-alikes provided by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sportas a publicity stunt. The match itself was no less interesting, as Bari managed a 1-1 draw thanks in part to Ibrahimović's ejection for punching Bari's Cartellino Rosso. It wasn't much help for Bari, though, who ended the

NORTHWCIH VICS 0 SQUIRES GATE 5 Squires Gate extended their unbeaten run to six games hitting Northwich Victoria for five on Thursday night. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back Seydou Bamba into the side after he had received from concussion in their previous home game against Charnock Richard, he replaced Dave Rossall. In a first half mainly controlled by Squires Gate, the homeside took the lead seven minutes before half time. Gate had been wasteful in front of goal up to then but had plenty of chances to open the scoring. Scott Harries with his first of the night. He jinked past his man into the box before his shot took a deflection to take the ball over the keeper and in. In a rare break into Gate’s half, Ben Fletcher stayed brave to deny the visitors in a one on one. Harries would grab his second of the game just two minutes later. In a similar part of the box, the Gate captain looped his shot over the stationary keeper for a quick fire double. Half time: Squires Gate 2-0 Northwich Victoria A mistake from Gate early into the second half let the visitors again in one on one, but again Gate keeper Ben Fletcher did well to deny them. Gate who looked fired up for this game, would add to their lead in the 63rd minute. Gary Pett burst into the box and was hacked down by a Vics defender and the striker, who had been causing Vics problems all night finished Cooley from the spot. Pett was again in the right place at the right one when he received the ball at the back post from Harries to tap in for 4-0. Gate would round of the scoring and a massive victory through Dean Ing in the 81st minute. He showed his strength, easily getting past his man before firing past the keeper with his weak foot.
