DANIEL PENSWICK AFTER TWO HARD FOUGHT VICTOIRES WE FULLY DESERVE OUR PLACE IN THE FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND. ALL THE LADS ARE EXCITED TO CONTINUE OUR FA CUP ADVENTURE Today we welcome Hansworth Paramore to the RBL Stadium in the FA Cup 1st qualifying round. It's been a fantastic journey in the cup so far and I'm hoping our adventure can continue after today's game. Handsworth look to be flying high in the Yorkshire league and will provide a tough test. They come into the game as clear favourites and we'll have our work cut out so stop their deadly strike force. After two defeats inside a week I'm looking for a reaction from the lads. We set ourselves high standards and I expect better. Whilst we haven't been dominated in either game we've made individual errors across the park that has contributed to our recent run of results. I'm looking for a stronger more cohesive display from the lads as we look to get back on track.
Let's hope it's another cracker with loads of goals and a clean sheet. Up the Gate

Squires Gate welcomed winless bottom of the league AFC Darwen to School Road on Tuesday night Gate looking to get back to winning ways after their first loss of the season on Saturday. Gate made a superb start to the game and took the lead after 20 seconds! A pass back to the keeper trickled under his foot, he did well to recover but his clearance went straight to the feet of Ric Seear who slotted Gate into the lead! Not two minutes later Darwen would equalise. They broke forward from the kick off and equalised. Then it was Gate turn. A minute later Gate took the lead again. Ryan Tanser sent through the middle to easily finish. Gate were forced to make a sub just before half time burning Joe Noblet off who picked up a knock. This gave Manager Danny Penswick the chance to change his system which saw Gate control the game more. The second half also saw a change for Gate with Brett Dawson coming off who also picked up a knock. AFC Darwen would take the lead after 58 minutes. Gate lacklustre at the back allowed Darwen in to beat Fletcher to take the lead. Though Gate probed and attacked they just couldn't find a way through a resolute Darwen defence. Gate had several corners and free kicks but couldn't make anything count.
FA CUP FAVOURITES To get in the spirit of the FA Cup, we asked Gate and Handsworth Parramore fans what their favourite ever FA Cup game is, and why. From 1912. to 2016, the only Yorkshire side ever to win the FA Cup in Sheffield.
ALBERT COOPER
1912 BARNSLEY 1 WEST BROMWICH ALBION 0 (AFTER A REPLAY)
“I can’t say I watched it but the fact that Barnsley won it and my uncle played in the game is the exact reason it’s up there as my favourite. Plus we are the only team to win the cup in Yorkshire. ” The crowd that watched the 1912 final, was 20,000 smaller then previous years but they still filled the ground and there was little spare space. Barnsley did not play an exciting game of football and relied on West Brom’s game of pass and return between their strikers and full backs too dangerous. Barnsley then tried to score on the counter attack but West Brom were able to deal with the threat. West Brom had a couple of chances when Cooper, the Barnsley goalkeeper fumbled a shot from Baddeley but he did not have any support. West Brom could not press the home side enough to break them down. The game went into extra time as the pace of the game picked up. After 118 minutes, it looked as if the game was going to penalties until Tufnell buried a shot right in the bottom corner.

LIVERPOOL 3 EVERTON 2 (AFTER EXTRA TIME) “Well, is there anything better than beating your local rivals in a FA Cup final? ” 5 weeks after the Hillsborough Disaster, and before kick off there was a minutes silence for those killed. Both teams wore black armbands as a sign of respect. Liverpool took the lead through John Aldridge and held onto that lead until the 90th minute, when Everton equalised and a pitch invasion by Everton fans ensued. The game went into extra time and Ian Rush scored after 95 minutes, Everton again equalised 5 minutes later. Ian Rush scored his second goal on the 104th minute with a header from a floated John Barnes cross.

2016 ARSENAL 1 WATFORD 2 “Going to Arsenal as the underdogs, and outplaying them on their own turf was amazing. The looks on their fans’ faces at full time was a picture! ” Watford stunned FA cup back to back winners Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to book their place in the semi finals. Odion Ighalo ended his goal draught to put the away side ahead in the second half before Watford doubled their lead through an Adlene Guedioura rocket strike. Arsenal pulled one back and left Watford sweating their Wembley trip, Welbeck had the chance to equalise in the dying minutes but couldn’t keep

BLACKPOOL 4 BOLTON WANDERERS 3 “To win the FA Cup after losing in 1948 and 1951 was a great feeling. They had such a good team and deserved it in the end.” The 8th final to be held at Wembley after WWII. The final has been famously known as “The Matthews Final” named after Blackpool Winger Stanley Matthews. It remains the only final to feature a hat-trick, scored by Stan Mortensen. This was Blackpool’s 3rd final appearance in the space of 6 years but their first victory. Matthews inspired his team to come from 3-1 down to win 4-3, Bill Perry scored the winning goal and Nat Lofthouse who had scored Bolton’s first goal had scored in every round of that years FA Cup.

1956 NEWCASTLE 3 MANCHESTER CITY 2
“Remembered for it’s football quality. Manchester had been represented for 4 years in a row in a FA Cup final, City and United winning one a piece.” Goals from Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell and George Hannah secured Newcastle’s cup victory. The game was virtually decided when City full back Meadows was turned inside out by elusive and mercurial Bobby Mitchell and after 22 minutes was stretchered off with a leg injury.
BRAIN PENSWICK
1971 BLACKPOOL 4 WEST HAM 0
“It’s remembered for Moore and Greaves getting hammered before the game. They must have thought it would have been an easy game. How they were wrong.” West Ham visited Blackpool over 50 years ago expecting an easy FA Cup tie. West Ham were told that the pitch would be iced over so Moore and Greaves headed to Blackpool town. Blackpool were playing a West Ham side that was full of England internationals and completely took charge of the game. Can anyone remember it?

2015 CHELSEA 2 BRADFORD CITY 4
“A great game which had everything in it, including a Bradford win!” In what proved to be Jose Mourinho’s last game in charge of Chelsea, Bradford came from 2-0 down at the home of the Premier League champions to knock them out of the competition. Goals from Mark Yeates and Halliday turned the tie on its head within the last 8 minutes. A memorable moment for all Bradford fans.

LAST TIME OUT
HARROGATE RAILWAY ATHELTIC 0 HANDSWORTH PARRAMORE 7 PREMIER DIVISION / THE STATION VIEW STADIUM / TUESDAY 30TH AUGUST 2016 Alex Rippon, starting his first game of the season, was showing well on the right and after he was unceremoniously chopped down by Low near the halfway line, the ultimate punishment was extracted as Gareth Griffiths headed home from Tom Dugdales pinpoint free kick after just 10 minutes. The next fifteen minutes saw wave after wave of Handsworth attacks, Rippon hitting the bar with a cross/shot from out wide, Simon Harrison having a free kick pawed away at his near post by keeper Lofthouse and a Kieran Wells effort being scrambled off the line as The Rail clung on for dear life. The second goal duly arrived after 26 minutes when a long kick by Green was flicked on by the impressive Danny Holland and Rippon raced through to fire home his second goal of the campaign. Rippon was on the end of another heavy challenge which earned the offender a yellow card, and in the next Ambers attack, Dugdales cross found Griffiths, whose close range effort was stopped by Lofthouse, before Wells dragged a half chance wide.

Railway did eventually manage to break out of their half and Day showed good pace and footwork to create a chance for himself which was eventually smuggled away before an excellent Ambers move ended with Rippon being brought down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger. Danny Holland stepped up and emphatically opened his Ambers account from 12 yards. Three minutes later, with the home defence being completely overrun, a corner was cleared to the edge of the area where Harrison won the ball back, took aim and fired in a beauty from 25 yards for the goal of the game and a 4-0 lead, and a minute later, Wells rose at the back post to head home a Rippon cross to complete a first half masterclass. There is always the danger of complacency setting in when a team is so far in front at half time, so it was important that The Ambers kept up their tempo, and Wells went close with a decent volley from a Holland set up. Railway, however, had their pride to play for if nothing else, and with half time substitute Ovington offering some width, they looked a better proposition in the second period, and but for a great goal line clearance from Ben Starosta, they would have reduced the deficit.
However, with Conor Higginson now on in place of Rippon, it was The Ambers who increased their lead after 63 minutes when skipper Micky Harcourt netted from close range after a corner fell at his feet in a crowded box, thus becoming the fifteenth different Amber to have scored already this season. Holland and Dugdale were then withdrawn, Danny Buttle and Colin Marrison replacing them as Mick Godber looked at different formations, but there was no respite for the beleaguered Harrogate defence, as Buttle produced a peach of a cross which was met with gusto by Wells

Handsworth Parramore FC were formed at the start of the 2014/2015 season after the merger of two highly successful clubs, Handsworth FC of the S&H County Senior League Premier Division and Worksop Parramore of the NCEL Premier Division. The clubs had been working together towards the merger during the previous season after first announcing their plans in the Summer of 2013. The NCEL and the FA allowed the new club to take over the position of Worksop Parramore, who had just finished in 4th place in the Premier Division, whilst the S&H CFA allowed their reigning Champions to continue under the name of Handsworth Parramore Reserves. The decision was made for the first team to play their home matches at Sandy Lane, Worksop whilst the Reserves and the other senior teams (Under 21’s, Under 19’s, Under 18’s A & B sides and Over 35’s) play their home games at Olivers Mount in Handsworth, Sheffield. The aim of the clubs joint Chairmen, Pete Whitehead and John Ward, is for the first team to return to Sheffield in a brand new facility within the next two years. The new club could not have begun life better as in their first game, they crushed Glasshoughton Welfare 6-0 and followed this up with a 5-1 victory over Oadby Town in their first ever FA Cup tie. After leading the table for a number of weeks, a downturn in fortunes led to a change at the top and the installation of the ex Belper Town management team of Peter Duffield and Mick Godber. The duo rebuilt the squad who ended their inaugural season in 7th place and with the clubs first piece of silverware, the NCEL League Cup, secured after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cleethorpes Town. Our second season started in positive fashion but halfway through the campaign, the difficult decision was made to relieve Duffield of his duties, with Mick Godber stepping up as Caretaker Manager. However, such was the impact that Godber made, including an unbeaten run of 17 games that propelled The Ambers to the top of the table, the decision to make the role permanent was taken just prior to the 5-0 thrashing of Worksop Town in the last home game of the season. The Ambers eventually fell just short in their quest for the title, finishing a comfortable second behind Champions Tadcaster Albion. The Ambers were chosen to represent the NCEL in the Toolstation Charity Cup in the Summer of 2016 and won the Trophy, beating Western League opponents Odd Down AFC, 4-0.

GATE EARN A REPLAY AT EVO-STICK SIDE BAMBER BRIDGE BAMBER BRIDGE 2 SQUIRES GATE 2 SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER 2014 Report by Mark Ashmore
Squires Gate travelled the short distance down the M55 to Bamber Bridge for Saturday's game. Bamber Bridge sit 6th in the Evo Stick Division One North and beat Stocksbridge Park Steels in the last round to set up this tie. Gate started the better of the two sides and could have gone ahead early on, after good work down the left from the returning Harry Dunn, he set up Billy McKenna but his shot was blocked and cleared by the Bridge defence. Bridge had the chance to hit back, Joseph Mullen taking aim from outside the box but his shot didn't trouble Fletcher in net. It's fair to say that in the first half Gate keeper Ben fletcher was man of the match, he made several top quality saves with all parts of his body to deny the home side.
Gate had the next chance after being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Bridge's Matt Lawlor caught the ball after thinking a foul had been awarded but was instead penalised for handball. Gate couldn't capitalise from the awarded free kick after sending the ball straight into the grateful keepers hands. A mix up in the Gate defence allowed Andy Bell to score after the ball wasn't cleared from the six yard box, Bell pounced to score past keeper Ben Fletcher.
Moving through what was a fairly even first half Gate had their next chance after a dominant spell of possession from the home side. Andy Richards found the ball 40 yards out and burst forward, passing two players he let fly straight into the top corner on 35 minutes from 25 yards out. Gate could have gone ahead soon after, but Billy McKenna's cross was taken off the toe of sub Hothersall by keeper Lee Dovey.
Into the second half and it was clear the home side had had a telling off at half time, they re-entered the field with determined faces and started the better of the two sides. The lively Alistair Waddecar cut inside Gate's defence but his early shot was fired into the crowd behind the goal. Gate's next chance came on the break from defending a corner. The ball falling to Hothersall and with him and McKenna bursting forward Hothersall couldn't find the right angle and a golden chance was wasted for Gate.
GROUNDHOP DIARIES
CHIRS POWELL
Another one of our regular features, this week Chris Powell speaks to us about his footballing adventures and why he loves non league. He also picks his dream XI of the players he’s seen live. First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? I come from a family of Evertonians so my football interest started with Everton. I have been going Goodison Park since childhood and, apart from a few seasons here and there, I have been a season ticket holder for over 30 years. After watching many Everton away games, I decided to finish off the 92, which in turn led me to go further down the pyramid. Some of my friends support Chester, and completing the 92 coincided with them being relegated to the Conference, so they suggested I come along with them and visit places such as Dover, Margate & Gravesend. It has snowballed from there! What is the best part about non league? It has to be the friendliness of people. The majority of time people are very welcoming and happy to have a chat and talk about their club or ask about you. Regardless of the level it is great to feel the passion that people have for their clubs. How many grounds have you visited now? Over a 1000 now, but I am a mere amateur compared to some people I know! Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? I have too many favourites to mention, all for varying reasons. Goodison Park is obviously up there! Sadly a few of my favourite grounds such as Consett, Benburb, Kirkintilloch and Worcester City have now disappeared. Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? Yes, I have been to over 100 grounds abroad, mostly in Europe. I would like to visit a ground in all 54 UEFA countries, if I possibly can. Germany has to be the best country to visit as the fan culture over there is superb. You can have a beer whilst watching the game and the tickets, even for top flight games, are inexpensive and the atmosphere is usually good. Touching on the previous question another fantastic ground I visited is the ‘Stadion am Schloss Strünkede’ the home of SC Westfalia Herne. What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) It is usually first or last games at grounds that I remember, though one cup tie that does stick in the memory was in 2005 when Northern Premier League Burscough scored two late goals to win 3-2 and knock League One Gillingham out of the FA Cup. Absolute scenes at the end of that match! I was also lucky to be in Germany in August 2015 when a new fan-owned club HFC Falke played it’s first competitive game. As you can imagine that was a day when the beer was flowing! If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? (teams in brackets) I have been lucky to see some of the best players live, from Maradona to Messi, Ronaldo to Rooney, so it is an impossible task to pick an XI. Therefore I am going to be completely and utterly biased and pick the Everton team of 1985 that won The Toffees their first (and only) European trophy, along with the league title; Neville Southall, Gary Stevens, Pat Van Den Hauwe, Kevin Ratcliffe, Derek Mountfield, Peter Reid, Trevor Steven, Graeme Sharp, Andy Gray, Paul Bracewell and Kevin Sheedy. What has been the best goal you have ever seen? From PL to non league? That is a tough question, as I have seen many great goals over the decades. One of those “I was there goals” was when a certain Wayne Rooney launched himself into the national psyche with that goal against Arsenal in 2002. Have you ever been to Squires Gate before, if so what was the score? Yes, on a freezing cold Saturday afternoon in December 2011. It was an FA Vase 3rd Round match and unfortunately Squires Gate lost 4-0 to Staveley Miners Welfare. It turned out to be a poignant afternoon for me as this was the last time I went to a match with a mate of mine, Neil. He was a former work colleague who liked a bit of ‘groundhopping’, so used to come along with me. He passed away not long after this. What has been the best, and worst game that you have watched this season? And during your adventures? Best game I have seen this season was over the Easter Weekend in the South West Peninsula League. Sticker beat Millbrook 6-4 after being 3-2 down. The game, played on a very wet pitch, had everything – great goals, a sending off, tenacious tackles and plenty of incident. All for a bargain £3! As for worst, I watched a forgettable Welsh Cup tie between Llanystumdwy and Nantlle Vale back in August. The visitors won 1-0. One of the best games I have seen in recent years was a German FA (DFB) Cup tie between 3rd Liga Chemnitzer and Bundesliga Mainz. It finished 5-5 after extra time and the home side won on penalties to cause a cup upset. Is there any grounds that you are looking forward to attending over the next couple of months? I am off to France in June for a few games at the European Championships. I am really looking forward to visiting Bordeaux as I have a ticket for Wales v Slovakia. This will be an historic occasion as this will be Wales’ first game at a major championship since 1958.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END In our regular feature, we spoke to Cole Starkes and Tim Rowland and asked them a few questions about their club and how they are shaping up for the season. This will be the first time that the clubs have met so there are some interesting answers in there.
could you give us a brief summary of how your season went last year? Did you achieve or underachieve your personal expectations? CS: I would say Last season was a success for the club but as the NCEL only allow one team to be promoted we missed out by finishing a close 2nd place. TR: Expectations were high last season and the team finished 2nd in the NCEL league 4 points behind Tadcaster having lost to them twice with only the one team promoted. What are your expectations for the upcoming season? How would you make improvements on last season’s finish? CS: This season I believe we have strength in depth and we have our best chance to becoming champions. We are aware of the improvements that are needed from last season and the players we have signed are great additions. TR: Expectations are even higher this season with a 'new' manager in place and some excellent signings including Tom Dugdale from Thackley who has already notched 6 goals from midfield and ex-Matlock Town defender Micky Harcourt not to mention ex-Newport County goalkeeper Joe Green. Which grounds do you enjoy visiting the most? Any favourites? What makes a good non league ground? CR: I enjoy visiting Albion sports as its always a warm welcome and the club is run by great people. My favourite ground tho is Sandy lane our temporary home.... Best pitch in the league, great pies, great bar always a warm welcome and the cheesecake is exceptional. All a non league ground needs is a half decent pitch, a good Bar and fantastic people running the club. That's what makes a club. TR: Prior to the merger with Parramore I have followed Handsworth in the NCEL since 2010 and a personal favourite is Taddie's ground probably due to the large crowds and atmosphere although you can't beat Sandy Lane for the Worksop derby. What has been the most memorable moment and game within your time watching Handsworth? (Any cup wins, promotions, etc)? CS: My most memorable moment was the NCEL league cup final against Cleethorpes Town. 3-0 down with 10 minutes to go and winning 4-3 in normal time. Incredible scenes as you can imagine. TR: There have been a few memorable games but I suppose the League Cup final win of 2014/2015 has to be right up there beating Cleethorpes 4:3 being 3:1 down with 6 minutes left. What was the best game you watched last season that involved Handsworth Paramore?
CR: We played Staveley away on a cold Wednesday night with a squad full of development players and we destroyed them 6-2.... We just couldn't stop scoring. Another very proud night for the Club. TR: A couple of games stand out for me. The FA Vase Round 1 win over Shildon AFC 5:4 after extra time and the 5:0 league mauling of rivals Worksop Town. Was great to silence the natives!
COLE STARKE & TIM ROWLAND Which players will cause the most threat to the Gate defence? Any players for our supporters to watch out for? CR: The Ambers have incredible fire power with strikers Wellsy & Frogba and with Duggy, Wraggy and Danny Buttle providing crosses in the box every team should be worried. TR: One to watch out for, Tom Dugdale, the boy is class and my personal favourite Steve Warne. If you could sign 3 PL players on a free transfer for Handsworth, who would you sign and why? CS: Zlatan - Confidence, Character and all round legend. Sergio Aguero - Phenomenal work rate what the club thrives on. Jermaine Defoe - He'd probably be on the bench but when you need a goal he's the man! Loves a beer as well. TR: Think we are lacking a leader so would go for John Terry. Got to be Jamie Vardy being a Sheffield lad. The third well that would have to be Dimitri Payet. If you were manager of a 5 a side team and could pick 2 Handsworth players and 3 PL legends, who would you pick? CS: Peter Schmeichel, Tony Adams, Alex Rippon, Thierry Henry, Jon Froggatt TR: That's tough apart from Scolesy as first choice. Matt LeTissier and Peter Schmeichel with Warney and Dugdale. Don't need to d efend Now for some questions about today’s famous competition: What has been the best FA Cup game that you have ever watched? CS: Man Utd v Arsenal 1993 Ryan Giggs enough said. TR: Wembley 1993 Semi Final Sheff Wed 2 Sheff Utd 1 but then again I'm biased. What has been the best non league ground you have visited for a FA Cup game? What was the score? TR: Bramall Lane? Joking apart not been many so have to say Congelton Town Realistically, how far do you expect to go this year? I've bet the chairman we will win it so all the way haha. CS: I've bet the chairman we will win it so all the way haha. TR: As a supporter I want us to go as far as possible. To play a National League team would be nice. I know the Chairman prefers otherwise with the league being a priority but I'm a massive FA Cup fan. Have you ever been to Wembley before? If so, who did you watch? What would be your ideal scenario there? CR: Been many times mainly to watch Sheffield United lose. Seeing them win there would be nice! TR: Been to the new Wembley several times mainly to watch England (including the Women!) and my dream FA Cup Final would be Handsworth Parramore vs Sheffield Wednesday. Well I can dream can't I! If Handsworth get knocked out, who do you think will go on to win it? CS Hopefully the team who knocked us out. TR: Think West Ham United could win the FA Cup this year with no European distractions now. Prediction for the game? CS: A few pints, Pie and hopefully a 3-1 win. We’d like to thank Tim and Cole for their time, it is much appreciated and we’d like to wish Handsworth Parramore the best of luck for the rest of the season. Have a safe journey home.
PREDICTION CORNER Last season, we run a prediction league for home and away fans that visited Squires Gate. We had over 40 entries through-
out, including other fans throughout the country. You get one chance to get as many points as you can predicting scores for games that are picked by the two editors. This season, we have changed the scoring slightly and added a new ‘double points’ section. If you would like to have a go, then send your predictions for the games listed below to haydendan@live.co.uk along with your name and the club you support by 14.50.

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON WHO’S IN CHARGE? Steve Settle
LAST SEASON
WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON 3 SQUIRES GATE 0 Gate made the worst possible start to the game and conceded the opening goal after 3 minutes. Perhaps a lack of match sharpness could be to blame for the first goal as it came too easily for Gates liking. The ball played over the top of Ferguson found the run of Shaw who easily finished past Fletcher’s near post. Gate first chance of the game fell to Danny Penswick after 15 minutes, the ball falling to him on the edge of the box we quickly turned and got a low shot away but the keeper did well to get down low to save. Gate came into the game more after the 25-minute mark but struggled to cope with pitch conditions and constant West pressure. Gate had claims for a penalty turned down on the 40-minute mark. Penswick’s free kick from just outside the box looked to strike a hand in the wall but the referee waved away Gate protests as if it were nothing. Gates best chance was soon after but Nathan Trout could only direct his header wide of the post. Much like the first half Gate didn’t start as they meant to go on and conceded anther goal after 48 minutes. West launched an attack from Gates attack and although Gate managed to get men back West still found a way through. An easy ball played across the face of goal allowed Ash Woods an easy tap in front of goal. Gate had the chance to grab a goal back after 50 minutes, some clever build up play in midfield led to Mckenna finding the ball but he couldn’t keep his shot down. First Penswick then Buchan had chances to grab a goal back for Gate but both were foiled. Penswick made a late run into the box but his shot was saved. The ball dropped to Ferguson who knocked the ball back into the box to find Buchan but his header was wide of the post. West had two chances to score but both one on one’s went wide of the net. The home side would make it 3 soon after. Ash Woods with the goal after a good spell of pressure from Gate, the home side caught them on the break to grab his second of the game. Gate perhaps created the better chances throughout the game but just couldn’t find the finish lot of the play deserved.
