SANDBACH UNITED LANE 19

Saturday 13th October 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium //Attendance:57 Squires Gate progressed into the second round proper of the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon with a late winner against Sandbach United. In spite of all the heavy rain the playing surface was in great condition with both sides starting brightly. After 19 minutes it was the visitors who took the lead. After the ball wasn't cleared by the home defence Sandbach's number 11 Josh Lane rifled in a shot from the edge of the area past Ben Fletcher who had no chance of saving the shot. Unlike recent games, the home side responded immediately and were level after only a minute. Ric Seear put the ball in the net following a drilled cross in from winger Ryan Riley on the right hand side. This was the first goal that Gate had scored for a few games and you could feel the tension lift from all around the ground. Both teams continued to play good football but neither could find a second goal to take the lead before the half time break. Half Time: Squires Gate 1-1 Sandbach United

The home side started the second half period well but it was Sandbach who had the chance early on when James Kirby was sent through One on one with the keeper but Ben Fletcher did well to save with his legs. It was the homesides turn next when from a corner captain Joe Booth headed straight at the keeper, Andy Clarkson's men though could feel they were getting closer. Both teams started making substitutions and it was the visitors who adapted to the changes quickest. They came close to adding a second goal when the right back drilled a cross across the homesides box without any player getting the finishing touch. The miss seemed to ignite Gate and they started to create some chances of their own. Neither side find that all important second goal and with the crowd expecting another 30 minutes of football, up stepped sub Brett Dawson to score the winner late in injury time. All eye's at Gate will be on the FA's website on Monday at 1pm to see where they will play in the next round on Saturday 3rd November.

1 1 SQUIRES GATE THOMAS 86(P)

Monday 15th October 2018//Yockings Park//Attendance:136 Gate made a positive start to the game, particularly from new forward Riccardo Egidi who was making his first start. He looked to be leading the line well with Ric Seear in a new partnership. Gate came close after eight minutes through Joey Mullen. The midfielder was on the end of several Gate passes but saw his shot tipped over. The homeside then had a chance of their own from outside the area but Ben Fletcher was equal to the shot. On his first start for the club, it was Riccardo Egidi who had the next chance for Gate. He burst through the Alport defence but keeper Parton was quick off his line to collect. Whitchurch went closest just before half time with the best chance of the first half. Sub Everall was sent through one on one with Ben Fletcher but his lob over Fletcher hit the top of the net. The turning point of the first half came when Whitchurch captain Darren Campion was show a red card after fighting with Ben Reader on the floor. The experienced player then continued to berate the referee and Gates players before having to be dragged away by his team mates in an eventful end to the first half.

Half Time: Whitchurch Alport 0-0 Squires Gate

It took the referee just two minutes if the second half to further stamp his impact on the game when he sent Ben Reader off for Gate. The midfielder making a genuine attempt for the ball seeing red. The sending off spurred the homeside on and in a rare break forward they took the lead. A cross from the right hand side headed in last Fletcher at the front post. In a half dominated with chances for Gate, Andy Clarkson’s men just couldn’t get that lucky bounce. That was until the 84 minute when the referees awarded the visitors a penalty. Defender Seydou Bamba had been fouled just minutes earlier in the same position but this time the referee ruled in Gate’s favour pointing to the spot. Sub Jamie Thomas stepped up to slot the spot kick past the keeper who guessed the right way. The draw for Gate could be a turning point for Andy Clarkson’s men who have struggled to pick up points of late.

Saturday 20th October 2018//The Mike Riding Ground//Attendance:143 Squires Gate progressed into the next round of the Macron Cup on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win away at high flying Longridge Town. The homeside, who sit top of the First Division North, were in fine form coming into this game having won their last game 7-2 on Wednesday night. Gate manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back Ryan Riley and Joe Booth into the side that drew 1-1 away at Whitchurch on Monday night, Ben Reader and Joey Mullen missing out. Gate made a positive start to the game and could have been ahead in the opening exchanges. Clever play between Riccardo Egidi and Joe Booth linking into the box but Riccardo's shot was saved for a corner which Gate couldn't capitalise on. Gate then had two more corner's but again couldn't test Lee Dovey in goal for Longridge. The homeside began to come into the game more fifteen minutes in but couldn't test Gate despite getting the ball into the box several times. Longridge had keeper Lee Dovey to thank after twenty five minutes when he pulled off a superb double save to deny Gate. First he stopped Dean Ing before springing up to deny Ric Seear's header from the rebound. The Reds started to up the pressure when midfielder Tom Ince fired a warning shot into the side netting on the half hour mark. Longridge took the lead in impressive fashion three minutes later. Experienced striker Jay Hart found in the box by Tom Ince saw Ben Fletcher off his line and chipped the ball over it make it 1-0. Gate's heads didn't drop after the goal was scored and they continued to create chances. Adam Sumner had the ball in the back of the net after he got on the end of a

clever freekick he started, but the left back was flagged for offside. Dean Ing then took aim a minute later but his strike was the wrong side of the post as Gate got closer.

Half time: Longridge Town 1-0 Squires Gate After a half time dressing down from Manager Andy Clarkson, Gate came out all guns blazing and equalised three minutes in. Gate battled well in Longridge's box before midfielder Dean Ing shot past Lee Dovey as he was falling over. Ing showing his impressive strength. The homeside had calls for a penalty turned down in the 51st minute when Paul Turner was bought down in the box, the referee though judged the challenge to be fair and waved play on. Gate doubled their lead minutes later through striker Ric Seear. He burst into the box from the right hand side and fired low past Lee Dovey to double Gate's lead. Longridge themselves could have leveled the game on the hour mark but winger Gardner could only find the side netting with his shot. Riccardo Egidi, who was starting just his second game for the club, came close to adding his first goal for the club on 63 minutes. The striker pounced on a Longridge mistake and held of defender Phil Doughty but couldn't find the target firing wide. It didn't take Gate long to create another chance, in fact just one minute later Ric Seear added his second and Gate's third of the game. He was found at the back post for an routine strike past Dovey. Seear had the ball in the net a third time shortly after but he was denied the hatrick as he'd drifted offside

Saturday 27th October 2018//The Abbey Hey Stadium//Attendance:70 Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back defender Dan Gray into the side whilst Joey Mullen and Brett Dawson returned to the squad on the bench. New signing's Owen Bridge and Chilufya Mututu started on the bench having joined the club during the week. Gate, who came into the game on a three game unbeaten run, took the lead after ten minutes. After starting the game well Ryan Riley burst into the box into space and fired past the keeper. Riccardo Egidi, who has been coming closer and closer to opening his account for the club, came close on the 15 minute mark. The ball was deflected into his path but he couldn’t get ahead of the keeper who collected. Gate doubled their lead through midfielder Dean Ing after 24 minutes. He arrived late in the box to head past the keeper from the edge of the six yard box. The homeside looked to get back into the game and hit Clarkson’s men on the counter. Luckily though defender Seydou Bamba, who is in great form, was in the right place to clear up. Abbey Hey ended the first half the better side and looked to put Gate under pressure in the last five minutes.

Half time: Abbey Hey 0-2 Squires Gate

Dean Ing did well to win the ball back at the start of the second half, he drove forward and found Seear but his shot was blocked for a corner. Seear looked to keep up his goal scoring return but was denied in the second half when he was flagged for offside. Seear wasn’t denied a second time when he headed in at the back post on 66 minutes. Captain Joe Booth clipped the ball into the back post where Seear was waiting for a simple header. The homeside grabbed a goal back in the 70th minute and looked better for it after changing formation after going 3-0 down. They his Gate on the break and found Oliver Walker who finished superbly past Fletcher into the top corner. Gate replied well and added a fourth goal, Ryan Riley scoring his second of the game. He got lucky after taking a touch too many, the keeper looked like he’d collected the ball only for Riley to come out the other side and slot the ball into the empty net. The best though was saved till last when Dean Ing scored the pick of the goals. He pressed the homeside back line pinching the ball in the box and firing into the top corner in the 89th minute.

HISTORY OF IRLAM IRLAM FOOTBALL CLUB began life as Mitchell Shackleton Football Club, founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell Shackleton Limited, a well established engineering company based in Eccles, which manufactured marine and diesel crankshafts. The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell (Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinction from 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson (now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub has been in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company's banner as far back as 1935.nitially, the Football Club was financially supported through the Company's active Sports and Social Club, however the recession of the late 1970's led to the Company restructuring its business interests, and unfortunately a reduction in the workforce. These events inevitably led to the dissolution of the Sports and Social Club, and a splintering of the various sporting sections with each individual group becoming self-financing. The Club initially entered the Eccles Amateur league before moving in 1972 to the Manchester Amateur league where there reputation began to grow. Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships were won consecutively, and a reserve section was created as the Clubs profile grew. During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial 'B' Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 1979-80.he Club initially entered the Eccles Amateur league before moving in 1972 to the Manchester Amateur league where there reputation began to grow. Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships were won consecutively, and a reserve section was created as the Clubs profile grew. During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial 'B' Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 197980. In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial 'A' Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. Industrial 'A' Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cup of 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club's 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League with Mitchells again progressing upwards by joining the Manchester League in 1989. In their second season, the Club was promoted as Runners Up to take their place in the Premier Division for season 1990/91 under the guidance of Paul Traynor and Kenny Davies. In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilchrist Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final. In 1994 Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ably assisted by Billy Hall. This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division, runners-up to Abbey Hey in season 1994/95. The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out; taking with him several first team players to a local, at the time rival Club Monton. Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, were promoted and asked to rebuild the side. A difficult season was to follow, but after being adrift at the bottom of the Division for most of the season, a dramatic win against fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave of relegation. After such a close call, Mitchells would never go below sixth position in their subsequent seasons i Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, a testament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game. In June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Premier Divison Secretary of the Year at the AGM of the Manchester League.A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, their existing ground at Barton was to be purchased and subsequently used for what has now to become the new Salford Reds rugby League stadium. The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundation assistance, Silver St in Irlam, once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice. The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposed move to Silver St, the site of the then defunct Irlam Town FC. The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian McClair's Milk Cup winning, Manchester United youth team. A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretary of the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground. The Club made the decision in 2006 that they would pursue a place in The North West Counties football League, and entry via ground improvements at Silver St meant that the Club entered their highest level of competition in their history in readiness for the 2008/2009 season. That inaugural season, under the guidance of manager Dave Mann was a tremendous success, finishing in 8th position on 52 points in our first campaign. The Clubs performances over following seasons fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusted to the higher level of competition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effort and commitment into the Club, culminating in the appointment, Steve Nixon, a local manager with an impeccable coaching CV in readiness for season 2014/15 after taking over mid-way through the previous season With manager Steve Nixon at the helm for his 3rd campaign for the 2015/2016 season, the future began to look bright both on and off the pitch at Silver St. The opening of a brand new Clubhouse at the ground again pushed the Club to greater heights, creating a real non-league footballing set up at Silver St.Season 2015/16 season proved to be a watershed moment for the Club. Since joining the league in 2008/2009 the focus has been on youth and development of the ground, and it was 2015/2016 season when all the efforts and sacrifices made came to fruition. Irlam manager Steve Nixon shaped a fantastic group of maturing young players as they put together a magnificent run of results to take second spot and gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history. Season 2016/2017 proved to be the most successful in the Clubs long history, an eighth place finish in the Premier Division showed the growing strength of the Club, whilst a treble winning U21’s development side swept all before them in the Cheshire U21’s league. Point deductions for our U18’s were all that stood between them and a possible title win as they finished 4th, just six points adrift of Nelson FC. For season 2017/2018 a restructuring of positions at the Club has seen new faces take control of on the field matters. 1st team manager Steve Nixon and asst Chris Boardman have moved out of the hot seats in order to take over the commercial side of the Club, with Steve Nixon taking over from Ron Parker as chairman of the Club. New manager Michael Dodd, and asst Matty Kay, both part of the 1st team backroom staff last season were chosen to take control for the new campaign. They have assembled a strong backroom staff around them and we wish them well for future campaigns

IRLAM EYRES 15

TUESDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2018//NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/The Recreation Ground /HT:1-0/ATT: 144

A valuable three points on the road on Tuesday evening saw Irlam come away from neighbours West Didsbury and Chorlton FC with all three points, courtesy of a Danny Eyres strike in the first half. The win moves IRLAM up to 14th spot in the NWCFL Premier Division, in with a group of three other Clubs all on 14 points. Within a minute of the kick off returning Irlam striker Jordan Buckley could have scored the opener, a back heel goalwards that nearly deceived the home keeper. Morrison curled consecutive corners as Irlam put early pressure on the hosts, and a long kick out from White nearly put Perry in as Irlam went in search of the opener. On 15 minutes, Irlam's search was over as Perry picked up a ball on the right before driving at the Didsbury defence, virtually unplayable as he fired across the home sides goal to pick out Danny Eyres, the Irlam midfielder with a clinical strike into the top corner to open the scoring. Boland and Amado whipped crosses into the area but there were no takers, whilst at the other end McLaughlin fired over Whites goal from 20 yards. The last talking point of the half would come when Perry , again driving into the home sides penalty was clipped on the heels, Perry electing to keep going when the penalty should surely have been given. HT 0-1 The first chance of the second period fell to Irlam when Amado fired goalwards, the Irlam fullbacks shot blocked at the crucial moment, followed minutes later by Irlam keeper White saving well down at his near post to deny West. The game settled into a rhythm of half chances and possession squandered from both sides as the home side pushed for the equaliser. Irlam captain Charlie Doyle proved to be the catalyst alongside the hardworking Morrison, the midfield pair breaking up chances in the midfield as the game wore on. Just past the hour mark Perry broke through again, but a decent strike from the Irlam forward would only find the safe hands of the home keeper. On 72 minutes Morrison attempted to deceive the home keeper, a free kick that was whipped 01 MARCUS BURGESS goalwards only to again be saved well as Irlam's one goal lead 01 LEE WHITE remained intact. 02 JOSHUA TINKER 02 ANDRE STEWART Inside the final ten minutes, and a loose ball, dropped into the 03 BENJAMIN WOODS 03 JOEL AMADO Irlam area caused a moment of panic as White saved well with his 04 JOHN ROBERTS feet to deny West a certain equaliser as Irlam cleared their lines. 04 CHARLIE DOYE The chance was followed up as the home side headed over the 05 MATTHEW ECKERSLEY 05 RYAN LEDSON Irlam bar, whilst at the other end Irlam forward Liam Pollitt broke 06 ANTHONY POTTS 06 CONOR BRAITHWAITE down the right before narrowly failing to lift a shot over the West 07 JACK LANGFORD 07 MARCUS PERRY keeper for what would have been an excellent goal. 08 SCOTT MASON The final action of the evening saw Centre half Ryan Ledson head 08 DANIEL EYRES clear a final effort from the home side as the final whistle sig09 SAUL HENDERSON 09 JORDAN BUCKLEY nalled a big win on the road for IRLAM . 10 DANIEL MCLAUGHLIN

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid

This week’s NLP programme copy below, written by Alex narey. With Shahid Khan withdrawing his interest in purchasing Wembley Stadium last week, many felt it was another door being slammed shut in the face of grassroots football, with the lower levels of the game set to benefit financially had the national stadium been sold to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham owner. I myself was always sceptical of the sale, mainly because I questioned whether the figures that were being bandied about would actually go back into grassroots football – there were far too many other people in the queue wanting their slice of the pie. But the non-sale has irked people because they saw this as a great opportunity for the FA to actively do something for the grassroots game, and let’s face it, something needs to be done because some of the statistics make for grim reading whether it’s 67 per cent of pitches deemed not to be of ‘adequate’ quality or the startling lack of 3G facilities in the UK compared to other European nations. Those who opposed the sale believe more Football League and Premier League clubs should be helping out, and that we should not need to sell Wembley to inject funds into grassroots. But the FA doesn’t have the power to instruct clubs to do that, and this is where the government must step in because they have neglected the game and simply passed the buck to others. They are almost saying: this is your problem, sell you house and all the furniture and be done with it! The money from the Wembley sale, even if it had come down to the lower levels of the game, would merely have served as a plaster on an open wound. Measures must be put in place to ensure more money comes down from the Premier League, whether through taxes on a player’s wage or a percentage of an agent’s fee. By selling Wembley and giving the grassroots game a chunk of the money, it is only ignoring the continued impact the Premier League should be having on the development of the game in this country. There are success stories of them helping out, but let’s not begin to kid ourselves: they aren’t doing anywhere near enough.

AROUND THE LEAGUE The final weekend of October is traditionally the last time that Saturday afternoon games will finish without the need for floodlights, and there were some bright moments for several clubs across the three divisions. In the Premier Division, City of Liverpool extended their lead at the top to five points with a 3-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton, with two second half goals from Craig Cairns eventually seeing off the home side. Congleton Town moved into second place, with goals from Daniel Cope, Dean Warburton and Emini Adegbenro earning them a 3-1 win in the Cheshire derby at Northwich Victoria They leapfrogged over Runcorn Town who overcame the loss of two early goals to draw level with Burscough at home, but Jordan Lorde struck the winner for the visitors six minutes from time. Silsden and Barnoldswick Town remain in fourth and fifth place respectively but both lost ground after going down to heavy defeats. 1874 Northwich slammed home five without reply against Silsden, two of them penalties from Scott McGowan, while Barnoldswick Town went 4-0 at Bootle. The most dramatic finish of the day was at Yockings Park, where Whitchurch Alport came from 2-1 down with 12 minutes remaining to eventually defeat Charnock Richard 3-2 thanks to two goals from Arron Johns, the second coming in stoppage time. Both Abbey Hey and Hanley Town remain in the bottom four after both fell to 5-1 defeats, with Padiham winning 5-1 at home to Hanley Town, and at the Abbey Stadium Ryan Riley and Dean Ing both scored twice as Abbey Hey fell to a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Squires Gate. Two games ended in draws, with Irlam and Ashton Athletic failing to find a goal between them, and Litherland REMYCA were held 1-1 at home to Winsford United. In the First Division North, Longridge Town continue to set the pace at the top after a 5-1 home win over St Helens Town. Daniel Gardener's two late goals put the game to bed for Town, whose lead over Carlisle City at the top remains at two points. The Cumbrians won 3-0 at Ashton Town, with the prolific Robert McCartney adding another two goals to his already impressive tally for the season. Avro remain in third place but are now ten points behind Carlisle City, after a 90th minute equaliser from Duncan Knott salvaged a point from a 3-3 draw at home to AFC Blackpool. Goals from Daniel Keane and Mathew Waller earned Shelley at 2-0 win at Atherton LR that moved them into fourth place. Two goals from Mason Nevitt helped Lower Breck to a 3-0 win over Prestwich Heys that moved them up into eighth place, and the highest scorers of the day were Chadderton, whose 6-1 home win over Cleator Moor Celtic was their biggest of the season. Anthony Hall scored twice for Bacup Borough in a 4-0 win at Nelson that moved them into mid-table, and there was some good news at last for Daisy Hill, who recorded their first league win of the season with a 2-0 win over Garstang. Both goals were scored by Ashley Stott, taking his tally to six in three games. The win for Daisy Hill also moved them out of the bottom two as Holker Old Boys lost 2-1 at AFC Darwen. The Stags had taken the lead through John-Paul Stanway, but goals frm Daneil Taylor and Elliot Pond secured the points for the home side There was one game played on Friday night, with AFC Liverpool taking a point from a 3-3 draw at home to Steeton thanks to a stoppage time equaliser from Jordan Foster. The top of the First Division South table continues to look congested, with just four points separating the top five teams. The top spot is occupied by Rylands, who continued their run of goalscoring form with a 5-0 win at home to Barnton, Jay White's hat trick being the highlight of the afternoon. Abbey Hulton United are level on points with Rylands but stay second on goal difference following their 2-1 home win over FC Oswestry Town, earned by two goals from Joshua Tune. Cheadle Heath Nomads are in third place after Karl Bailey's 88th minute equaliser earned St Martins a 1-1 draw at the Venue. Nomads had led through a first half opener from Philip Yuille. Wythenshawe Amateurs are in fourth place, eventually having to settle for a 3-3 draw at home to Stone Old Alleynians after two goals from David Wright had helped them to 3-1 lead eight minutes into the second half. A few miles away across town, goals from Brad Byrne, Chris Middleton and Dylan Stringer-Moth ensured a 3-1 win for Wythenshawe Town over Vauxhall Motors that moved Town into sixth place. Sandbach United's good run of recent form was temporarily halted as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to New Mills. All the goals came in the first half, with Jordan Milne and Adam Farrand scoring for the Millers, while Kieran Garner-Knapper and James Kirby from the penalty spot replied for United. Stockport Town were the division's highest scorers, Matthew Hanson and Adam Etches both scoring twice in the 5-1 home win over Eccleshall, and Stone Dominoes dropped into the bottom two after going down 2-0 at home to Alsager Town. Ellesmere Rangers remain bottom after losing 2-1 at home to Maine Road, and in the other game Cheadle Town shared a 1-1 draw with Cammell Laird 1907 at Park Road, with Ben Dutton-Kelly earning a point for Lairds with a 79th minute equaliser to cancel out a first half goal by Luke Hincks for Town.
