3 1 ASHTON ATHLETIC (KORIE-BUTLER 42)

Saturday 4th November 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 91 Gate made a great start to this game and took the lead after six minutes. A great tackle on the edge of the box saw the ball fall to Jack Williams. The striker jinked through several tackles from Ashton before firing past Martin Pearson in goal. Gate looked to control the opening 20 minutes after their early goal. Ashton looked to get a foothold in the game, but Gate did well, particularly in midfield to break up the game. Gate would double their lead after 27 minutes through a superb goal of the season contender from Tarren Moxon. The winger was played in behind Ashton's defense before seeing the keeper off his line and cooly chipping the ball over him and into the net. Late into the first half it would be Gate who would come close again. Great work by Moxon to win a corner for Gate, that corner was fired to Pett at the far post, but the keeper got there first to collect off Pett's head.Just as Gate thought they'd seen out the first half, the visitors would pull a goal back from nothing. Striker Dale Korie-Butler volleying in from the edge of the box after being let unmarked.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 2-1 Ashton Athletic

The second half would see the visitors come back into the game, starting the second half the better of the two sides.

They came close on 50 minutes when they hit the side netting from outside the box. Soon after they sent a dangerous cross into the box but nobody could meet the teasing ball in, and Gate cleared.Ashton then had the best chance of the second half from a Gate mistake. Andrew Richards sending a weak back pass back to Ben Fletcher which was intercepted by Korie-Butler for Ashton, but he fired the ball over the bar. Gate themselves came back into the game in the last 20 minutes. First Mark Buchan played a lovely ball over the top to find the run of sub Tyler Atack, but he was flagged offside. Then from a freekick just outside the box, Gary Pett curled a superb freekick round the wall but could only find the crossbar. Gate would grab the winner to make sure the game was out of sight with four minutes left. Sub Tyler Atack, who had impressed in recent weeks, meeting a superb freekick to head into the bottom corner from the penalty spot.

SQUIRES GATE CHARNLEY 90

Friday 10th November 2017 // Select Stadium // Attendance: 74 Midfielder Dean Ing and last weeks goal scorer Tyler Attack were unavailable for this one so Alex Colquhoun came into the side at right back. Jack Kay came back into the squad on the bench. It was the homeside that started the game the better of the two side dominated the game and keeping possession for the first ten minutes. Gate had to be calm and soak up the pressure for the first 15 minutes of the game with the homeside looking to take the lead early on. Gates first shot of the game came in the 15th minute. From a freekick Andrew Richards laid the ball short to Mark Buchan who played it back to Richards, but his shot was always rising from outside the box. Tarren Moxon had the chance after 30 minutes to replicate his goal against Ashton Athletic on Saturday. He cut inside but this time his curled shot was tame and easily saved by the keeper. Ben Fletcher made the first of several superb saves the keep Gate in this game on 35 minutes.

Kev Towey was allowed through Gates defence too easily, but Gate’s number one was there to react quickly to save with his foot.

Half time: Widnes 0-0 Squires Gate The second half started with Widnes again on the attack. The left back was allowed behind Gate too easily, his shot was palmed out to Towey who blazed his shot over the bar. Gate again had to be reliant on Ben Fletcher in goal as he pulled off another superb save. He misjudged the freekick before reacting quickly to adjust and tip the ball over. Gate would make the break through late into the second half in the 91st minute. Two subs combined as Dan Gray beat his man to cross to the back post where Ryan Charnley was unmarked to head in. The win moves Gate to 14th in the league and top of the form table with five wins from six.

THE BOSS

MICHAEL DODD Michael been in-charged of Irlam since 2014 just after Irlam grain promotion to the premier Division, he was very happy with what Irlam was planning and where they want to go.

This would now be his 2 full season at the club and last year he did brilliant in the league as they finished in a decent position in the league and this season they off the mark quiet quickly, Michael would be hoping for more off what he seen over these2 season and would also be hoping for a higher league position then last year.

BREIF HISTORY IRLAM FOOTBALL CLUB began life as Mitchell Shackleton Football Club, founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell Shackleton Limited, a well established engineering company based in Eccles, which manufactured marine and diesel crankshafts. In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial 'A' Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. Industrial 'A' Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cup of 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club's 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League with Mitchells again progressing upwards by joining the Manchester League in 1989. In 1994 Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ably assisted by Billy Hall. This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division, runners-up to Abbey Hey in season 1994/95. The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out; taking with him several first team players to a local, at the time rival Club Monton Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, were promoted and asked to rebuild the side. A difficult season was to follow, but after being adrift at the bottom of the Division for most of the season, a dramatic win against fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave of relegation. After such a close call, Mitchells would never go below sixth position in their subsequent seasons i Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, a testament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game. In June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Premier Divison Secretary of the Year at the AGM of the Manchester League. A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, their existing ground at Barton was to be purchased and subsequently used for what has now to become the new Salford Reds rugby League stadium. The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundation assistance, Silver St in Irlam, once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice. The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposed move to Silver St, the site of the then defunct Irlam Town FC. The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian McClair's Milk Cup winning, Manchester United youth team. A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretary of the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground. The Club made the decision in 2006 that they would pursue a place in The North West Counties football League, and entry via ground improvements at Silver St meant that the Club entered their highest level of competition in their history in readiness for the 2008/2009 season. That inaugural season, under the guidance of manager Dave Mann was a tremendous success, finishing in 8th position on 52 points in our first campaign. The Clubs performances over following seasons fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusted to the higher level of competition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effort and commitment into the Club, culminating in the appointment, Steve Nixon, a local manager with an impeccable coaching CV in readiness for season 2014/15 after taking over mid-way through the previous season With manager Steve Nixon at the helm for his 3rd campaign for the 2015/2016 season, the future began to look bright both on and off the pitch at Silver St. The opening of a brand new Clubhouse at the ground again pushed the Club to greater heights, creating a real non-league footballing set up at Silver St. Season 2015/16 season proved to be a watershed moment for the Club. Since joining the league in 2008/2009 the focus has been on youth and development of the ground, and it was 2015/2016 season when all the efforts and sacrifices made came to fruition. Irlam manager Steve Nixon shaped a fantastic group of maturing young players as they put together a magnificent run of results to take second spot and gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history. Season 2016/207 proved to be the most successful in the Clubs long history, an eighth place finish in the Premier Division showed the growing strength of the Club, whilst a treble winning U21’s development side swept all before them in the Cheshire U21’s league. Point deductions for our U18’s were all that stood between them and a possible title win as they finished 4th, just six points adrift of Nelson FC. For season 2017/2018 a restructuring of positions at the Club has seen new faces take control of on the field matters. 1st team manager Steve Nixon and asst Chris Boardman have moved out of the hot seats in order to take over the commercial side of the Club, with Steve Nixon taking over from Ron Parker as chairman of the Club. New manager Michael Dodd, and asst Matty Kay, both part of the 1st team backroom staff last season were chosen to take control for the new campaign. They have assembled a strong backroom staff around them and we wish them well for future campaigns.

LAST TIME OUT WEST DIDSBURY BAILEY 22,41 TINKER 46

0 5

IRLAM BOLAND 17, 60 PERRY 19,44 GREENE 45

Friday 10th November 2017/The Recreation Ground/ Attendance: 258 West and Irlam staged their own Goal of the Season competition under the Friday night lights, but familiar failings haunted the home side as they slumped to a fifth consecutive league defeat. A vibrant Irlam claimed a fully-deserved three points, completing a league double over West, but Steve Settle will highlight the closing stages of the first half as the point at which this match got away from his side. Four minutes before the interval, West had the momentum after a Tom Bailey brace had hauled them back onto level terms following Matthew Boland and Marcus Perry strikes for the visitors. But by the time the teams were in the dressing rooms drying off from a Brookburn Road downpour, Irlam had inexplicably been allowed to restore their two-goal cushion, Perry and Daniel Greene taking advantage of a West defence present in body but not in spirit. Josh Tinker, who had shuffled across to left-back after Matthew Simcock endured a torrid first half trying to keep pace with the irrepressible Perry, cut inside to fire an Exocet missile of a shot past Lee White moments after the restart, but once again West left themselves with too much to do. Boland’s second on the hour ensured that West’s wait for a first league point since 14th October goes on, and a season that started promisingly is in danger of disintegrating. But if the end result may have left West fans cold on a dreary November evening, there could be no complaints about the level of entertainment, particularly during a frantic first half in which chances were a regular occurrence at both ends. West, buoyed by the returning Matty Kay, started like an express train and should have been at least one goal to the good inside 15 minutes. Kevin McGrath headed over from a Tinker cross, before Carlos Mendes Gomes had two chances – the first was more difficult, just being beaten to the ball by White after Kay’s midfield harrying, but he should have done better moments later when he sliced wide from the edge of the box. Irlam were without their leading scorer, Jordan Icely, but they soon grew into the game and crafted opportunities of their own. Malachi Slaven’s through ball found Perry in open space in the area, something that would become a motif, and Connor Martin somehow failed to force Perry’s cross over the line. Two minutes later, another attractive Irlam move involving Martin, Ryan Ledson and Boland led to the latter firing well over from inside the area. West failed to heed these warnings and the visitors took a grip on the game with a one-two punch. First, Boland ghosted into the area following Greene’s pass and easily beat Ashley, and then another Perry raid was finished emphatically when the winger opted to shoot rather than cross. Irlam had chances to increase their lead, Ashley saving from Perry and Martin glancing a Greene free-kick just past the far post, but West restored parity with a double of their own. Joe Shaw and Bailey combined for both – Bailey controlled and finished Shaw’s clever reverse ball, and then lurked opportunistically when the midfielder’s long shot was spilled by White. Then came another decisive loss of concentration. West had been on top against Lancaster City in midweek before switching off to concede a late winner, and again they surrendered the initiative. Perry was inevitably involved as Irlam regained the lead, seizing on Boland’s through ball, and the unmarked Martin made no mistake when 01 AARON ASHLEY 01 LEE WHITE Perry’s shot was parried by Ashley. In the first minute of injury time, 02 CALLUM PRAGNELL 02 MACAULEY HAREWOOD Greene was offered a guided tour of the West final third, and he had 03 MICHAEL SIMCOCK 03 JOEL AMAO enough time to expertly pick out the top right-hand corner of the net. Settle made a double substitution at half-time, mercifully ending 04 KEVIN MCGRATH 04 MALACHI SLAVEN Simcock’s evening in favour of Richmond Botchey and switching deb05 JOSHUA TINKER 05 STEVEN MILLIS utant Jack Sergeant for Callum Pragnell, and West immediately threw themselves a lifeline with Tinker’s spectacular effort. It was a lifeline 06 ANTHONY POTTS 06 RYAN LEDSON that would be ruthlessly snatched away – Boland escaped the atten07 CAROLS MENDES GOMES 07 MARCUS PERRY tion of Sergeant and scored an even more impressive version of 08 JOSEPH SHAW 08 LIAM MORRISON Greene’s goal from 25 yards. Mendes Gomes almost added another to the game’s collection of 09 THOMAS BAILEY 09 CONNOR MARTIN golden strikes, his fierce shot from outside the area saved well by 10 MATTHEW KAY 10 MATTHEW BOLAND White, but West ran out of momentum and ideas as the second peri11 SCOTT MASON 11 DANIEL GREENE od drew on. It was the visitors who could have scored more through Martin and Perry, but five was more than enough. SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2016

Gate made a good start to the game and had their first chance after just three minutes. Ric Seear was played through into the box, he cut the ball back to his strike partner Buchan but the Scot's shot dribbled wide of the post. The visitors then had a chance of their own on eight minutes. They got the ball out wide to the right winger but his cross across goal flew straight through to the back post and out. Gate would take the lead after 11 minutes. The ball falling to the feet of Andrew Richards, he poked it towards goal, then Paul Alexander back heeled the ball past the keeper to give Gate the lead. Jamie Gibson then did well to when he was found in the box on 15 minutes but his cross was cleared with Ric Seear ready to pounce just behind the defender. Gate then had yet another chance from a freekick just outside the box, unfortunately Ryan Riley's header could only find the top of the net. Irlam had a great chance of their own after 32 minutes but luckily for Gate, failed at the last minute. The striker finding his way through and one on one with Ben Fletcher but he slipped at the vital moment allowing Fletcher to easily pick up the ball. Down the other end and it was Gate who could have doubled their lead with three minutes of the first half left. Mark Buchan put a low cross into the box which was almost scored by an Irlam defender who had his keeper to thank for a brilliant save with his foot. It was the visitors who started the second of with the momentum, in fact the first ten minutes was all them but Gate did very well to deal with any threat put their way. The second half was much more even and became very much an end to end game. First Ric Seear was sent through on 58 minutes but his shot was fired straight at the keeper. Then Irlam had a freekick, that was fired into the near post but Lawler fired the ball wide. Gate had a great set of chances on 70 minutes with several players taking aim. First Ric Seear's shot was pushed wide before Ricahrds clipped the crossbar trying to chip the keeper. Two minutes later sub Brett Dawson played in Ric Seear but his shot was deflected wide. That deflection fell into the path of Jamie Gibson but his unbalanced shot fell wide of the post. Irlam would level the game in the last ten minutes. Too easy for them down the left hand side for the winger to cross in for an easy tap in at the back post. Irlam battled well in the second half and perhaps did deserve a goal in the game but Gate had plenty of their own chances to win the game. The game ended in controversy with four minutes left with Gate having a perfectly good goal ruled out. Ben Seear firing the ball in at the back post only to be flagged for offside. Even though Irlam had two men behind the ball on the goal line, Seear was supposedly offside.

SATRUDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2O16

A great ball forward from Andrew Richards was looking for the run of Ryan Riley but was just too heavy, before Jamie Gibson and Ric Seear played some lovely stuff before Irlam cut out the danger.Irlam would take the lead against the run of play after 10 minutes. From Gates attack Irlam broke at pace before the homesides man of the match, Matty Boland nipped in at the front post to glance the header in. It wasn't until after this goal that Gate really got going, something that Gate manager Danny Penswick believed was one of the main reasons for the result after the game. Gate saw more positive play from the front pair of Seear and Riley in the next 10 minutes who both tried their hardest to get Gate back into the game. First Ryan Riley broke the offside trap before his low shot was well saved. Seear then tried to carve his way through jinking through challenges but was crowded out with plenty of men back for Irlam. Ryan Riley was then involved again on 23 minutes when he was found in the box from a freekick. Joe Noblet finding Riley's feet with a clever ball but the striker was muscled off the ball after he'd cleverly turned in the box. Ben Seear picked up the ball in the box but his low striker was pushed wide by the keeper. Ben Seear the found himself on the end of Jake Higham's cross at the back post but he could only head up into the air rather than at goal. Despite Gate's good spell of chances it would be Irlam who would strike again. From a freekick Josh Woods punched the low ball in out to the the edge of the area. But back in the ball came and found Marcus Perry who looked offside to slot past Woods. Gate then ended the half on top much like they had been all game despite Irlam's two chances which both ended in goals. First Irlam headed behind after Mike Hall did well to win a corner but that was headed over the bar by Ric Seear. Then from the other side Jamie Gibson fired wide with a rushed shot. Manager Danny Penswick chose to bring striker Brett Dawson on at half time and he made an instant impact. He almost scored direct from a corner but that was headed clear at the front post. Another corner this time from the other side was met by Paul Carroll but headed over the bar. Dawson was again involved on 48 minutes when he cut inside his man but fired wide of the goal. Gate had two great chances on 54 minutes including appeals for a penalty. That came when Jamie Gibson was taken out in the box with the defender not touching the ball. Ric Seear then picked up the loose ball but the keeper did well to smother the ball at his feet. Gate would grab themselves a goal back on 59 minutes. Brett Dawson swinging in the freekick to find the head of Ric Seear who rose highest to head through a crowd of people. Down the other end Josh Woods made a superb instinct save to deny Irlam in what was one of their first attacks of the second half. Manager Danny Penswick introduced himself to the action after 77 minutes after nearly a month out with injury to try and create something for his side. But it would be Irlam who would grab another goal. Paul Carroll did well to clear the ball off the line after Woods had come off his line to close down the ball. Winger Matty Boland tapped in for his second of the game to secure the three points for Irlam.

LAST TIME OUT? BARNOLDSWCIK TOWN 2 SQUIRES GATE 4 Gate made the best start possible when after just four minutes they opened the scoring. Striker Ric Seear sent through down the left hand side burst into the box unchallenged and fired low past the keeper. What followed was a fairly quiet 10 minutes with both sides seemingly cancelling each other out, though the homeside did have more of the possession. Gate manager Danny Penswick made some Tactics changes bringing another man back into midfield and it seemed to do the trick. Ben Seear had the chance to grab a goal of his own after 19 minutes. A dodgy clearence by the keeper fell to his feet but he was closed down before he could shoot. Brett Dawson could have grabbed a goal on 29 minutes but he couldn't be found in the middle. Ric Seear sent down the wing but his cross into Dawson was blocked. Dawson would get his chance and grab Gate a second. Brett Dawson burst into the box down the middle and was hacked down. Dawson stepped up and Cooley slotted the penalty away. gate were almost in on goal again as the half came to a close. A Barnoldswick corner was flashed across goal and cleared into the path of Ric Seear. Seear burst forward down the wing but was tackled before he could send Dawson through. Gate would grab a third goal on 51 minutes. Great perfectly timed through ball found the run of Ric Seear. He calmly finished past the keeper for his second of the game. The homeside looked more of a threat in the second half. Paul Alexander had to be aware of what was around him on 60 minutes as he headed behind with attackers behind him. The homeside would grab a goal back on 63 minutes. The left back cut inside before guiding a shot right into the top corner. Barnoldswick then had two chances in quick succession to add another. First a shot came in from outside the box which Ben Fletcher tipped over. Then a corner came in and found a Barnoldswick man at the back post but he fired over from nearly under the bar. It would be a perfect day for Ric Seear who bagged his Hatrick on 90 minutes. A perfect way to celebrate his birthday. Noblet sending a perfectly timed ball down the line found Seear who steamed into the box. He tricked and turned his way through the defence before easily slotting the ball past the keeper. The homeside would then grab another goal. The striker getting the faintest of touches to head the ball past Fletcher.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THETHEY EUROPEAN KICKS OFF MAYBE NEED CUP A LONGER BREAK

1955 2011

On 11 November 2011, São Tomé and Príncipe played their first World Cup qualifier after an eight-year hiatus. They lost 5-0. An African island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, São Tomé and Príncipe formed their football team in the 1970s and played their first match, a 5-0 loss to Chad, in 1976. They either did not enter or withdrew from World Cup qualification until 2002, when they lost to Sierra Leone in the first round of CAF qualification by the aggregate score of 2-4 over two legs. They did even worse in 2006 qualification, losing to Libya in the first round 9-0 on aggregate. Afterward, they decided not to try for the 2010 World Cup ad withdrew from the qualifying process. With eight years to recalibrate, São Tomé and Príncipe chose to compete for the 2014 World Cup, opening their campaign with a two-legged tie against Congo and promptly lost the first leg at home, 5-0, on 11 November. They did better in the second leg, playing to a 1-1 draw, but it was not enough as the 6-1 aggregate deficit eliminated them.

A FITTING MARK FOR THE OCCASION 1939 On 12 November 1939, forward Josef Bican commemorated his appearance for a third national team by scoring a hat-trick. Bican, who was born in Vienna in 1913, made his first national team appearance for Austria in 1933. He went on to play for them a total of nineteen times--and scoring a total of nineteen goals--through 1936. The following year, he left Austria to play for Slavia Prague where he spent the majority of his career, scoring 395 goals in 217 matches between 1937 and 1948. After moving to Prague, he switched his national team allegiance to Czechoslovakia. But after only three games (and eight goals), Czechoslovakia fell to the Nazis, who disbanded the team. They attempted to persuade Bican to turn out for Germany, but he declined, choosing instead to play for the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia which, while Nazi-controlled, remained ethnically Czech. In his lone appearance for the Protectorate, Bican provided three goals in what turned out to be a 4-4 draw with Germany. He rejoined the Czechoslovakian national team when they resumed play in 1946, making another eleven appearances for them until retiring from international football in 1949.

BEING FIRST ISN’T ALWAYS BEST On 13 November 1982, Real Madrid won the first Supercopa de España match, beating Real Sociedad 1-0. Unfortunately for them, it was only the first of two legs. The winners of the league and Copa del Rey had met in previous competitions over the years, most notably the Copa Eva Duarte, which had been played from 1947 to 1953. But that was the last time until the establishment of the Supercopa in 1982. Real Madrid, the previous season's Copa del Rey winners, hosted the first match against Sociedad, the reigning league champions. With a crowd of 45,000 looking on, Madrid defender John Metgod (pictured at bottom left) scored the match's only goal in the 44th minute to give the hosts the win. The teams didn't meet for the second leg until 28 December, when Sociedad got three extra-time goals to win the match 4-0, taking the cup 4-1 on aggregate.
