v Irlam 05.092015 FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round Kick Off: 15.000 Issue 4 ÂŁ1.50
MCCANN Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for our FA Vase fixture against Irlam FC. May I welcome all associated with Irlam and wish you a safe journey home. Today is a busy day for the club as not only have we a game here today but our reserves are also playing away this afternoon at Padiham FC. What should have been the reserves first game fell foul to the weather after 44 minutes of the 1st half on Monday night, at Irongate, the home of Bamber Bridge FC. We wish Andy and Dave all the best in their 1st fixture today but playing the current league leaders is a very tough challenge. Today we host Irlam FC who we know very little about. The only fixture that I'm aware of that we've had recently against them was in 2011 when we were convincingly beat in the Challenge Cup. Were obviously hoping for a much better outcome today. At training on Thursday we had a good session that was very well attended. One topic of discussion that was talked about during the night was discipline. Now that we have so many young players at the club I feel it's essential that all at the club display the correct disciplinary levels required, that includes discipline both on and off the pitch. Discipline is a big word that incorporates many required behaviours as an individual towards opponents, officials, team mates and all associated with the club. It's important that experienced players at the club set a good example and this is something I'll be insisting on. I felt on Tuesday we played a lot more like ourselves and I'll be hoping that continues again today. In the end I felt we were on the receiving end of a few harsh decisions by the officials which cost us the 3 points but we have to overcome those and ensure that we win games and not fall short because of the actions of other people. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at School Road for our next home fixture on Saturday. Up the Gate!!
THE MANAGER
DAVE
Ben Fletcher (Available for sponsorship) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. Kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.
Chris Anderson (Available for sponsorship) Chris made his league debut on the first game of last season. A versatile player that has a wand of a left foot. Some impressive performances saw him awarded ‘Coaches Player of the season’ last year. A key player in the side that influences others around him.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.
Wes Benjamin (Available for sponsorship) Wes is a highly promising defender that arrives in time for the start of the 2015/16 season. He has experience playing in National League North football but is looking to develop through regular football with Squires Gate. Wes is comfortable playing at both centre back or right back and can even play in midfield if needed.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Available for sponsorship) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Terry Cummings (Available for sponsorship) Terry is a graduate of Myerscough College. He made his debut on the opening day of this season against 1874 Northwich. He is a forward player capable of playing across the front of any of the attacking positions in midfield. With bags of skill and ability, he’ll be hoping to make his mark on the season at the earliest opportunity.
Keiffer Cunningham (Available for sponsorship) Kiefer is a very promising young player that can play in numerous attacking positions. He made a limited number of appearances last year due to work commitments but is hoping to make a big impact this season. A young prospect with plenty to offer.
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Josh Kay(Available for sponsorship) One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Bill White ) Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

GATE END AUGUST WINLESS Tuesday 1st September 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Pictures by Albert Cooper
Squires Gate hosted Nelson on Tuesday night looking for their first win of the season. Josh Kay returned from injury and made an instant impact. Just 7 minutes into the game Kay was sent through and saw the keeper off his line and made him pay. He side footed the ball up and over the keeper to put Gate in the lead. Nelson came back after the goal but Gate looked in control. Gates front three looked impressive but it was defender Josh Westwood who ran from his box to Nelsons to crest the next chance. When he eventually got into the box his shot couldn't match the superb run and the ball dribbled wide. The equaliser for Nelson was a mix of poor closing down by Gate and a superb shot by Wicks. The midfielder found himself with space at the edge of the box and fired into the top corner just before half time. Into the second half good work from Kay and Cummings to send the later in behind he pulled it back again for Kay but his shot went over the bar. The first chance of the second half for Nelson from a corner but the header was cleared off the line by Richards and into Fletcher hands. Gate followed up with good pressure resulting in two chances but first Penswick then Ferguson had their shots blocked. Peter Wright up front found space in behind but his shit was narrowly wide. Josh Westwood was next with a chance but his header from a corner could only find the top of the net. More pressure

The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and professional footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England. 222 clubs entered The Vase in its first season but they did not include those clubs which had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy. For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. The first Vase Finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two of them. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack.
Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals. The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley has hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins. Aficionados of The Vase competition tend to rate the 1992 Final between Wimborne Town and Guiseley as the best so far. Wessex League Wimborne had a modest record in the competition before then, having never ventured beyond the Third Round, but they embarked on a spectacular Vase journey that took them all the way from the First Round to The Final. A goal down after 14 minutes at Wembley, the

This particular section of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club was founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell, Shackleton and Company Limited, a well established engineering company based in Patricroft, Eccles, which manufactures marine and diesel crankshafts. The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell (Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinction from 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson (now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub has been in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company's banner as far back as 1935. Mitchell Shackleton FC entered the Eccles and District Amateur Football League in 1970 where the Club established itself without winning any major honours. After a two-year association with the Eccles League, the Club sought pastures new by joining the Manchester Amateur League in season 1972-73. It was in the Manchester Amateur League that the Club's reputation began to grow, winning the Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships in successive seasons, and in 1975 a reserve team was formed. During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial 'B' Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 1979-80. In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial 'A' Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilgryst Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final. Since this time, the Club has been working tirelessly to bring the Club into the North West Counties, the highest standard that the Club has seen. Manager Gary Fellows left the Club to take up the position of manager at Salford City FC, and after a season with manager Arthur Burns, who worked miracles with a threadbare side, including winning the Manchester Challenge Trophy, the mantle passed onto Dave Mann to continue the building of a new side for the following season. Despite Irlam's lowest finish to a campaign in its six seasons in the NWCFL a decent finish to the season provides the Club with an optimistic outlook for 2013/2014. Season 2014/15 was a learning curve for the new management team as the season presented plenty of positives from probably the youngest squad in the league. A large pool of players competing in the 1st Division, Res Division and North West Youth Alliance league really put the accent on youth at the Club. Notable highlights for the 1st team was a final appearance in the Manchester FA Premier Cup, along with a mid table finish in Div One. The Reserves had a season of success, finishing 4th in the Res Division as well as winning the Reserve Div Trophy against Glossop as well as runners up in the Reserve Div Cup final against Nickname: “Mitchells”, “Shack” Darwen. With management team Steve Nixon and Chris Boardman once Founded: 1969 more at the helm for 2014/2015, it is hoped that the talented Ground: Silver Street young players at Irlam will really push on this season. Capacity: 1,000 Chairman: Warren Dodd Manager: Steve Nixon

This week we spoke to Irlam supports Mark Halliwell (MH) and Mark Morrissey about their views and opinions on their team this season, and how they think they will get on today.
What are your expectations for this season?
MH: Last season was a bit of a transition season with some great players coming through from the clubs youth system to the first team. The playoffs should be within reach this MM: I think if we can keep a fit and regular side then we are more than capable of a top four
Squires Gate are still winless going into today’s game, but in football terms you will be the ‘underdogs’. Do you think that you can cause a cup upset today?
MH: It’s still very early in the season, and league tables can be misleading. At our best, we do MM: Yes I do. If the lads stick to their game plan, they will be able to cause an upset. Irlam currently sit 3rd in the First Division, what do you think you need to improve on to progress on that throughout the season?
MH: Last season we had a great defensive record and have started well again, we need more goals scored this season. At this level, everyone is looking for consistent goalscorers. MM: They just need to maintain their current work rate and not let their heads go down if
Which Irlam players will offer the most threat to opposition this season?
MH: Isaac Illidge is a top class midfielder in the making. Looking forward to seeing what he can add to the team this season. MM: They just need to maintain their current work rate and not let their heads go down if
Which team(s) are you looking forward to coming up against?
MH: No particular favourite. It’s a great competitive league. MM: I see them all as a good challenge. What was your most memorable moment and game from last season?
MH: The game against Wigan Robin Park where we won 4-1. Adam Campbell getting his 3rd MM: I don’t really have one. They all had their faults and merits. Last of all, what’s your prediction for today’s game?
MH: I’ll have to go for a 2-1 Irlam win. MM: I’ll go for a 3-2 Irlam win.

SQUIRES GATE 2-4 AFC LIVERPOOL Saturday 6th September 2014 AFC Liverpool sat 4th before this game having lost their last game 2-0 against league leaders Runcorn Linnets. Gate sat 14th but had games in hand. It wasn't the first time these two teams had met this season with Gate previously beating AFC Liverpool in the FA Cup 3-0. Gate had the added bonus of welcoming BBC Radio Lancashire to School Road. Gate were in high spirits for the day and were proud to offer entertaining non league football on non league day. Non league day falls once a year on a day when no premier league or championship games take place due to the international competitions taking place. It offers a great chance for non league clubs to really sell themselves to new fans who wouldn't have usually considered coming to watch a game. It was AFC Liverpool who had the first chance in the games a mix up in the Gate defence allowing Liverpool's Morgan through but the cross in was dealt with well by Josh Westwood who stood tall to clear. Gate had their own chances to capitalise early on also Chris Anderson's throw down the line met the feet of Brett Ferguson who's turn and cross round his man was cleared away. Both teams will know that it could have been 1-1 very early on. Ferguson again was involved in play but his shot flew well over the top of the crossbar with the Liverpool defence looking shaken. Gate seemed to be getting a lot of early chances in what was looking like an even game, a cross in again from the left hand side met the head of Jake Forshaw at the back post but his header fell wide of the goal. Liverpool had plenty of chances of their own and should have been ahead but Gates defence who have only conceded 6 goals all season, stood firm to deny them. Gate made one change just before the second half with Sean Holmes coming onto make his debut for Chris Anderson who went to hospital after a clash of heads. Into the second half and it would be fair to say that the away side made the better start, just 3 minutes in and good work from the Liverpool midfield sent through Ronnie Morgan to easily slot past Ben Fletcher to open the scoring. The away side again looked to exploit the middle of the Gate defence and a ball over the top found the run of the lively Ryan Cox to double the away side's lead with a nice chip over the keeper.
It was Liverpool who had all the chances in the second half and deserved there 2-0 lead. Gates only chance in the opening 20 of the second half fell to Sam Dickinson on the edge of the area who tried to recreate his winner against New Mills last week but did everything right apart from find the net. Liverpool again found the back of the net on 69 minutes in what was more or less an exact copy of the first goal with Ryan Cox again finishing easily. Gate brought top scorer Jack Sowerby into the game and he looked to make an instant impact firing a shot just over with one of his first touches of the ball. It was the substitute, Sowerby, who looked to make things tick with good work up play between him and Ryan Riley leading to a tame shot from Jake Forshaw. After his good work since coming on, Sowerby got one back for the home side after being played through on goal, finishing well to make the tie a tasty one on 84 minutes.
Gate who had scored two goals late on in their last game against New Mills looked a different side and just four minutes after scoring there first, Jake Forshaw doubled the home sides tally. A cross in by Brett Ferguson was fumbled and Forshaw was at the back post to score into the empty net. Gate, now with just one goal to draw the
