WELCOME Good evening and welcome to The Brian Addison Stadium for what has felt like a lifetime since our last competitive home game. It’s been a nice rest but now we have 4 programmes to do over the festive period. Tonight, we welcome league newcomers Isle of Man in the first meeting between the two clubs. I’d say a warm welcome to our visitors; however, it’s due to be absolutely Baltic tonight so I hope you’ve wrapped up warm! A big thank you to Isle of Man fan, Ian Strodder who has helped massively with the away section of this programme. I hope you enjoy your visit, Ian! Good evening everyone, and welcome to tonight’s league match between Squires Gate and FC Isle of Man. A warm welcome to the visiting fans, players and committee. It’s been a while since our last home league match, so there’s a lot to catch up on. We progressed brilliantly in the Vase against Emley, only to fall at the next hurdle with a poor performance at Holker Old Boys. We went from a good run in the league to a few defeats on the bounce, so it’s frustrating that after a good run that we’ve dropped off a tad recently. I guess you can put it down to tiredness, but

there’s no excuses as far as I’m concerned and we need to improve on our recent performances now that our full focus is on the league. Some excellent news coming out the club recently was that Nathan Cliffe and Rowan Chambers both committed their futures to the club by signing contracts with us. They’re both excellent young players and to have them tied down to contracts is huge for us. It’ll be a tough test for us tonight. Isle of Man are a strong side who will be sure to give us a good match. Thank you for all your support. Gaffer

09.11.2022 // SQUIRES GATE 3-2 CHARNOCK RICHARD // THE BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM Pic by Ian Moore

SQUIRES GATE 3-2 CHARNOCK RICHARD Gate made the perfect start, with Moore firing them into the lead after just three minutes. Neat football led to Moore picking up the ball from distance, and firing a brilliant striker over the Charnock goalkeeper. Pennington had to be switched on at the other end just five minutes later, as he brilliantly tipped over a goal bound volley from Carl Grimshaw. Gate doubled their lead on 25 minutes through Theo Ball. Mekkaoui-Abouzaid did brilliantly down the left to drive into the box and pull it back for Ball, who beat the defender and buried the shot into the far corner. Charnock did get themselves back in the game just before half time, and it was Grimshaw who scored for his 500th goal. A corner was only half cleared, with a low effort going back across goal stabbed home by Grimshaw.

#WeAreGate

It was the worst possible start to the second half for Gate, as Charnock were awarded a penalty just three minutes in with Harrison Webster the man penalised. Pennington did brilliantly to deny Grimshaw from the spot, but the striker was on hand to fire home the rebound. Hesford almost got an assist on 90 minutes, doing brilliantly to race away down the left and play an excellent ball across goal for Cliffe at the back post but the Charnock keeper somehow kept the scores level with an incredible save. It didn’t matter for Gate though, as Hesford grabbed the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time with his first senior goal for the club. Good work from Boyd and Chambers led to an effort from Cliffe only parried away by the goalkeeper, with Hesford first to react to fire home the rebound and send the Gate players, staff and fans wild!

Pic by Ian Moore

EMLEY AFC 1-1(p) SQUIRES GATE Gate looked to start on the front foot, with James Boyd hitting the first effort of the game just wide from a tight angle after excellent work from Theo Ball.

Pennington was required again on 89 minutes, making his best save of the game to parry away a close range effort after Emley broke in behind.

A dangerous cross from Hughes that was well cleared and a free kick by Nathan Bartram that struck the wall kept Gate on top, and Evans’ men took a deserved lead on 20 minutes.

The score finished 1-1, with the match going straight to penalties.

James Boyd and Ryan Riley dispatched Gate’s first two penalties, with Pennington saving Emley’s second to make the score 2-1 Webster drove forward and released to Gate after two pens each. Nathan Cliffe had Nathan Cliffe down the left, who’s cross his penalty tipped onto the bar, before Emley deflected into the path of Boyd who levelled up the scores with a well taken spot volleyed home clinically. kick.

Emley did grab their equaliser right on the stroke of half time, with an in-swinging corner headed in at the back post by Pashley despite Gate appeals for a foul on Pennington.

#WeAreGate

Harrison Webster scored his penalty to put Gate back ahead, before Pennington saved once again to give Gate match point. Nathan Bartram was the man to step up, and he slotted his penalty away superbly to send Gate into the next round!

Very neat and tidy, long covered stand on one side with a single bench seat which runs the entire length, three separate (and smaller) covered stands on the other side plus the dugouts. Clubhouse behind one goal, main road behind the other, which is where the balls kept ending up in the pre-match warm ups. Home support mainly stayed at the clubhouse end even with their team attacking the far goal in the second half.

Not being committee or media was left to fend for myself at half time, and nothing wrong with that on a sunny afternoon. Score is purely on the feel of the visit (well, besides that second half on the pitch) and a cheery welcome at the gate

Squires Gate defender Nathan Bartram scored the winning penalty, to send Luke Evans men to Round 3 of the FA Vase.

The ground and services at Emley were brilliant, it's definitely worth a visit if you're in Huddersfield. As for Squires Gate, what a club !! One man worth a mention is the man at the wheel, Luke Evans. The man bleeds Squires Gate and it was amazing to see.

Big shoutout to Connor from Fylde Coast Talk Sport for making our FA Vase victory at Emley AFC their featured match of that weekend, and for that excellent write up. It was a brilliant day all-round, one of my favourite ever in my time at Squires Gate FC, and it was a good achievement for the club too, even though we lost the next round at Holker Old Boys - there’s always next year! The set up at Emley was excellent, and one of he best I’ve seen at this level. The food was to die for, and the overall facilities were fantastic. From the mini-bus journey, to the joy of opening the scoring, the nerves as Emley pushed for a winner, and the ecstasy when Nathan Bartram scored the winning spot-kick in the penalty shootout. What a day! Again big thanks to Fylde Coast Talk Sport, not jut for this game but for their overall coverage of non-league football across the Fylde Coast. FOOTBALL AT

CHRISTMAS Words by Gary Langley As the festive season starts to embrace us all it is noticeable that modern attitudes towards Christmas sport are changing. For me, part of my Christmas tradition is planning to get to the game on Boxing Day and if it’s too far to get to – any game will do! Please feel free to picture an image of me in a tacky Christmas Jumper on the terraces clinging on to a hot beverage for dear life!

Not everyone celebrates Christmas, not everyone has family that they can gather around and not everyone can afford to get some sort of meal together for themselves, let alone many others. Some people just don’t like it, and that’s ok, for many the stress that it brings out-weighs the happiness of it. This article is a Sporting one though and I want to look at the evolving relationship between football, the people that play The subject was recently looked at it, people that watch it and the exon a programme on a certain pectations around it. Admittedly, I always try game, because they wanted to have and be balanced in my articles, it’s a drink over the festive season but what we always try and achieve did not want to play ‘worse for when writing pieces, however on this wear’. one, I’ll admit, I have a slight bias – hence putting pen to paper as so to Despite being shocked, I had every speak. sympathy with the club too as they were saying that the culture of the We live in a multi-cultural age with club is good as it is a group of close all the benefits that come with that, friends, but they would struggle to and like many I enjoy learning about put a team out as whatever the various holidays of different happens, they are going out cultures, religions and social groups anyway. and always respect them and learn from them. A look back into history shows that it wasn’t a million years ago that there was a full programme of football on Christmas Day itself. The first Christmas Day Fixtures took place in the 1888-89 season with Preston North End and Aston Villa facing off, these were the Galacticos of the day and it was PNE that took the honours 3-2 on the day in front of a crowd of over 10,000. The idea caught on and there were several clubs that played on that date with it really catching on after the First World War. The Idea of the Christmas Derbies stem from this era as Clubs would reverse the fixture on Boxing Day so you would have two local derbies in two consecutive days, home and away, this led to mammoth crowds and crazy score-lines. However, after the Second World War, attitudes changed as did the transport infrastructure as the Rail Network declined and patronage dropped and the last booked set of fixtures set for Christmas Day was in the 1957-58 season. The Boxing Day fixture and seasonal derby concept still lives on to this day, although at the Elite level of the game 400 mile+ round trips seem to have evolved out of the latter. In the modern game we are still just about clinging on to some traditions but will we still be seeing football packed Christmases in ten years time? I’m not entirely sure, but I hope so.

MOROCCO – AND AFRICA – ARE WORLD CUP SEMI-FINALISTS! Words by Kevin Chroust This is a Morocco side working against history for African sides at the World Cup, and at this particular tournament they’ve been swimming into a Persian Gulf rip current against European powers. So it’s fitting in that it makes little sense that the goal came from the left for a team known for attacking rather well up the right with Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech. Instead, it was Youssef En-Nesyri getting on the end of a 42nd-minute cross from the left by Yahya Attiat-Allah for the finish that would send the first African side through to a World Cup semifinal and end Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career without a trophy or even a knockout-stage goal.

Diogo Costa. The Portuguese goalkeeper committed to coming off his line and got caught in goalkeepers’ purgatory. For Portugal, it was a tournament-leading third error leading to a goal with only Canada, Australia and Wales even having two.

And so the current switched its flow. Portugal had 78.9% possession in the first 15 minutes, but it was hardly a first-half attacking performance in continuation of the 6-1 win over Switzerland. Bruno Fernandes hit the woodwork three minutes after the Morocco goal, and João Félix had two earlier chances from the top of the left side of the box, but Portugal’s 0.27 xG for the half was less than idea after managing 0.98 against Switzerland and 1.20 in the first half of their last group-stage game against South Three previous African teams Korea. For the shots on target reached a quarter-final – Cameroon crowd, it was one following first in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and halves of five and six. But this It nearly went to 2-0 with Attiat-Allah Morocco team has learned a thing or firing wide on the break with one of two about such opponents in Qatar. the last touches of the first half, but there was a legitimate question of The Atlas Lions’ competition at this whether they’d need it. Morocco tournament hasn’t been easy. They were 4 1/2 matches into their opened against 2018 finalists and tournament – plus 30 minutes of now 2022 semi-finalists Croatia with extra time against Spain – having a draw, then they beat 2018 allowed one goal, and they scored it semi-finalists Belgium. And if the former was finally Credit En-Nesyri for the goal – his going to score a goal in the knocksecond of the tournament on his out stages of a World Cup, it was second shot on target – but question going to be a meaningful – perhaps

international career-extending – one in his 22nd World Cup match. First, he nearly set it up in the 82nd with a touch to Félix for a first-time strike, but Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou made a sprawling save to deflect it over the bar. Then in the 91st minute the chance came, but Ronaldo’s near-post attempt was saved. That wasn’t the miss Portugal will remember. It’ll be that of his longtime team-mate, Pepe, whose stoppage-time header went wide. That’s how the duo’s quest for the trophy ended, with Ronaldo going the 570 minutes of knockout-stage football he played at World Cups without a goal. Morocco have done it with very little of the ball. Their 31.3% possession is the second lowest rate at the tournament ahead of only Costa Rica. But they also did it with individual efforts. When you don’t have the ball, you have to defend it. Hakimi won possession a team-leading nine times and won both of his attempted tackles. His 19 tackles and 13 won at this World Cup are the most of any player. Sofyan Amrabat won possession eight times against Portugal, and his 41 overall lead the tournament. They’ve now kept four clean sheets in five games, and the three they’d kept in four entering this match was already the most ever by an African side in a single edition of the tournament with their seven overall matching Nigeria for the most ever by an African side. Morocco clearly aren’t worried about European opponents to the point that their next European opponents will have plenty more to think about that than they will.

Jay Foulds is one of the longest serving managers in the NWCFL. He took over at Ashton Athletic in 2013 and has guided the Yellows to a number of decent finishes, The highest position that he has taken the Yellows to was 5th on two occasions.

Andy Welsh is the first Bury AFC manager, and has been in charge since 2020. A left footed midfielder during his 15 year playing Career. He featured for Sunderland in the Premier League and a number of MLS teams before retiring in non league in 2017. Andy managed Ossett Albion in 2018 and guided them to a 5th place finish in step 4 as well as winning the County Cup. He has since led Bury to promotion to the Premier Division.

ONE TO WATCH: Max Rogers

ONE TO WATCH: Lewis Gilboy

A name that might be recognisable to Squires Gate fans is Max Rogers, who played for Gate in the 2021/22 season after joining from Blackpool FC’s Academy. After leaving Gate to join Bootle towards the end of last season, Rogers moved again to join Ashton Athletic for the 2022/23 campaign. A tricky player with pace and power, Gate’s backline will have to be on guard to keep Max at bay.

With a squad full of talent, it’s difficult to pinpoint just one player from Bury AFC as their one to watch. But with 14 goals already this season, winger Lewis Gilboy will certainly be a threat. Joining Bury in 2020 after his release from Accrington Stanley, Gilboy also featured 10 times for City of Liverpool before his move to Bury. An extremely dangerous player who will give Gate’s defence a big test.
