DANNY

PENSWICK We look forward to what should be an exciting and entertaining game today. It's been 3 weeks since out last game and all the lads are looking forward to getting back playing football. With all the wet weather we've had it's been frustrating from a footballing perspective and I'm looking forward to seeing what this group of players can achieve. Last time out against Colne, I was pleased with our performance but disappointed with the end result. We're looking more calm in possession and showing signs of patience which is great to see. Hopefully we can see some good attacking play and a vital 3 points for the Gate. On behalf of all the lads and myself I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thanks for all your continued support and as always Up the Gate …...

IN TODAYS PROGRAMME We take a trip back to the 1991/92 season, and see how Squires Gate got on in their Division Two campaign. We pay respects to ex player Arthur Moody who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Programme Editors Daniel & Jay give their predictions on this weekend’s games and there’s stats, results and head to head records for you to read! Also there is an In depth look at today’s visitors.

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form. Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship) Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own. Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season. Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club. Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front. Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship) Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season. Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship) Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team. Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship) Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.

Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.

Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.

Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship) Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates and is very good at holding the ball up.

Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.

Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White) Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.

Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.

Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship) Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

Gate finally got a home game on at The

Royal British Legion Stadium after having not played there since the start of the month when they beat AFC Darwen. Gate made one change from last Saturday’s defeat at West Didsbury with Joe Noblet coming in for Brett Ferguson who dropped to the bench. The game started a lot like Gate expected it to, like last time these two teams met Colne started with a lot of possession of the ball. The dangerous front line put Gate’s defence under pressure early on but Gate defended well.

Gate next chance on 24 minutes for one of his customary long shots but this time his striker was just wide.

Billy Mckenna was just as unlucky late on as his low shot couldn’t catch out the Colne keeper. So with the game level at 2-2 on

90 minutes extra time and possibly penalties awaited the two teams.

SQUIRES GATE 1-0 AFC BLACKPOOL Friday 26th December 2014 Squires Gate hosted AFC Blackpool on Boxing Day in the first Blackpool derby of the year. Gate made one change from the side that drew with Abbey Hey Brett Ferguson coming in to replace the injured Harry Dunn. It was right first half for both teams with both putting in strong tackles and showing real passion. Gates defence had to be at its strongest when Gate were caught on the break early in the first half, the defence though more than equal to Blackpools attack and the game stayed 0-0. Gate struggled to get a real hold on the game and struggled to create a clear chance in the first half. Pics by Albert Cooper Blackpool had their Chances but Gate made sure the game remained scoreless at half time. Into the second half the first thing Gate did was make a change Jake Forshaw coming on for Rob Henry. The game was changed into the second half when Blackpool were reduced to 10 men, Muscroft judged to have lead with his leg when jumping for a header resulting in a straight red. This seemed to give Gate the boost they were looking for and they went on to dominate the second half. Gate made the break though shortly after the sending off. From the corner kick Colquhoun headed the ball back into the box to find an unmarked Mark Buchan who's header couldn't miss, the Scot opening the scoring to get his fourth for the season. Gate had chances to double their lead and on another day perhaps would have but in extreme weather conditions luck just wasn't on the home teams side. Gate pilled on the pressure late on to double their lead but looked understandably cautious to risk the result. Late chances for Mckendrick and Forshaw saw the game fizzle out to see Gate win the first Blackpool derby of the season. Report by Mark Ashmore.

Words by Brian Addison ARTHUR MOODY, who played for and captained Squires Gate in the 1950's and early 1960's, has sadly passed away. His connection with the Gate, lasted long after his playing career ended, and he went on to help develop the club, spending most of his spare time building our clubhouse, with the club committee and other hard working supporters He also liked to work behind the bar on match days, while even on on match days he could be relied upon to be ready with a hot pot of tea for the lads after they had finished training. His friends and former colleagues at Squires Gate would like to send

As a football club, we would like to thank supporters and volunteers who have helped out at the club this year. All your help is appreciated, and the club would not be where they are now without you! Our previous campaign saw us record our highest ever points tally, and equal our highest ever finish. We would like to thank Brian Addison for his continued hard work keeping our pitch in great condition despite the heavy rain in recent weeks, Mark Ashmore for his work as media manager, and everyone else who has taken time out to help the club in any We hope everyone has a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. Our first game back at The Royal British Legion Stadium will be on the 2nd January when we host Barnoldswick Town, and there will be a 55 page match day programme featuring a review of 2015, chairman’s review, managers review, more head to head stats, prediction corner, season flashback and more! The club was formed in 1955 by supporters of Manchester City under the name City Supporters Rusholme, when past Chairman Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies. Soon after that, the club joined the local Rusholme Sunday League and Thompson became the Chairman. In the late sixties they changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday league and also moved their headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club, and that's when the new name Maine Road FC was born. A man called Ronnie Meredith was the driving force behind the club in the Seventies. in 1971–72 Maine Road won their first league Manchester County Sunday Cup and Cup Double. The success prompted Meredith to look for bigger challenges and he changed the whole future of the club by moving to Saturday football in the form of the Manchester League. Maine Road won the Manchester Premier Cup in 1975–76, beating Abbey Hey in the final and again in 1976–77, when Maine Road beat Little Lever in the final. More success followed on the field and after several years of moving grounds, Club finally settled on a permanent home in 1980. Brantingham Road in Chorlton is where the club still play today. After an initial lean spell at the new ground, The club then won the Manchester League four times consecutively from 1982–83 to 1985–86. Throughout the same decade, they set a record by winning all five Manchester County Cups. Derek Barber took over the managerial reins in 1986 and the clubs progress continued so much so that when the Manchester County FA's new complex at Brantingham Road was built Ron's other ambition was achieved. Entry to the Bass North West Counties League.

MAINE ROAD 1-2 SQUIRES GATE Sat 02 November 2013 Jack Sowerby scored two goals to help Squire Gate to a win against joint leaders in the table Maine Road. After Gates defeat in the League Cup last Saturday, they travelled to a Maine Road side who had only lost twice in the league this season and sit at second in the table. Gate started the game full of confidence looking to take advantage of the good surface at Maine Road. The visitors, took the game to the team who were sharing the top spot in the table, and it was Gate who looked like being the first side to score, through a header from Danny Penswick, which went inches over, then Craig Carney’s effort was stopped and Greg Hall pounced on the loose ball. Gate Keeper Ben Fletcher had a save to make, the ball fired of the Maine Road head but Fletcher found himself in the right place at the right time to smartly save with his legs. Gate again worked the ball forward through the midfield and Ben Fishwick found space to shoot from 25 yards, but the ball was cleared. Then a corner from Fishwick found the head of debutant midfielder, Adam Cowen, and despite the home keeper grasping at the ball, he managed to head inches over the crossball. Despite the home side having the wind at their back, Gate’s defence kept solid. And pushed forward, with Seydou Bamba on the left, and Jack Sowerby making runs through the home defence with Jack Cook working hard trying to set up scoring chances. Into the second half and Gate started as they'd ended the ball being worked out to the left hand side to Jamie Bryson how drive just skimmed the top of the crossbar. After a fairly even 20 minutes Gate broke down the right hand side, clever play between Carney and Cook led to a through ball from Carney for Sowerby to finish into the bottom corner on 71 minutes. It was just 5 minutes after his first that Sowerby made it 2, a low ball through to the back post found Sowerby at the back post on 76 minutes. Gate looked to build on the two goal lead and most of the game was played in the Maine Road half. Gate's chances of a clean sheet were given a blow when Richard Williams latched onto a defensive mistake from Squires Gate to score on the 87th minute to make the last few minutes tense. Gate next play at home to Alsager Town next Saturday, the game is a 3 o'clock kick off.

SQUIRES GATE 1-2 MAINE ROAD Sat 22 March 2014 Gate keeper Dave Rodgerson was on hand within the first few minutes when Tom Bentham broke free of the Gate defence to create a one on one with the keeper, Rodgerson stood tall and pulled off a fine save using his feet to deny the visitors first blood, Bentham was again in the mood for grabbing glory, when a lobbed the ball that left the Gate keeper stranded, but for right back Seydou Bamba to send in a perfect tackle denying Bentham a certain goal. Gate’s best effort of the first half found tricky Marc Mullen in another one on one with the Maine Rd keeper Daniel Coughlan, but he managed to palm away Mullen’s effort, Gate were having a much better game than their previous lacklustre performance, looking hungrier and fitter as throughout the first half the Gate attack comprising of Mullen, McKenna and Sowerby all making great moves in front of the away goalmouth, fed by great service by Richards, Unsworth, and Hindle but somehow an opening goal went begging. Into the second half and within the first minute Gate winger Billy McKenna, crossed from left to right and hit a power shot into the top left side of the net which gave the visitors keeper no chance of saving, this in turn seemed to wake up the visitors, as we witnessed end to end football with both sides having plenty of goal scoring opportunities, then on 55 minutes Gate keeper Rodgerson was again on hand to save the Gate’s blushes, when he saved a great effort denying the visitors an equaliser.

Maine Rd started to boss the game and the home side were unlucky to concede when on 62 minutes when Richard Williams hit a ball from just inside the penalty area, Seydou Bamba attempted to block the shot but the ball cruelly hit him and deflected past Rodgerson making it one all. Rodgerson was in the thick of it again a few minutes later, this time pulled off a fine save again, and again with his feet. Road felt they were in control as they continued to apply pressure on the Gate goal, when on 78 minutes John Mason toe poked a cross into the back of the home sides net giving the visitors a 1-2 lead.

SQUIRES GATE 3-1 MAINE ROAD Sat 9th August 2014 Manchester side Maine Road were the opponents for Squires Gate's second home game of the season in the North West Counties Premier league. Gate recorded an emphatic 3-0 win against Nelson FC on Tuesday night and were looking to build on their positive start to the season. Maine Road who finished 4th last season have yet to register any points after their opening two fixtures. The visitors had the better chances of the opening 15mins, with a Connor Hughes free kick but going just wide of the post. At the other end Harry Dunn struck a shot hitting the crossbar, the re-bound found Gate striker Ryan Riley in the starting line up for the first time this season he had the ball in the net from a close range header on 20mins but ruled offside. After good work from Sowerby and Riley in the area the ball fell to Harry Dunn who finished at the back post to make it one nil to gate on 32 Minutes. Two minutes into the second half and Gate's Alex Murphy almost doubled their lead with a sweetly struck free kick.only to see it hit the bar. Road had chances to equalise moments later, Gate keeper Ben Fletcher pulling off two great saves to deny them. After ten minutes of Maine Road pressure Gate delivered a sucker punch, Jack Sowerby doubling Gate's lead with a low shot under the oncoming keeper on 58 Minutes. Road should have pulled one back on 70 minutes Rory Breslin putting his header wide of the post, and then minutes later Jamie Roe struck a good effort but his shot was always rising. Maine Road's keeper Matt Ince pulled off a series of great saves to deny the inform Jack Sowerby, and then Gate's left back Chris Anderson on 75 minutes, Gate looked in control from then on and started to boss the game in the oppositions half with crosses coming in from both flanks, the on the 83rd minute the Maine Road keeper who'd had such a good game made a howler not controlling a safe pass back and completely missing the ball, and watched in horror as the ball ran into his net.

MAINE ROAD 2-3 SQUIRES GATE Sat 22nd November 2014 Squires Gate travelled to Maine Road on Saturday looking to continue their impressive run which has seen them lose just once in the last nine games. Gate made two changes to the team that drew with Colne. Josh Westwood came back into the starting 11 in the place of Alex Colquhoun who dropped to the bench, Jake Forshaw was unavailable due to injury so was replaced with Brett Ferguson. Gate sat 9th coming into this game with their hosts 11th but level on points. Maine Road came into the game after winning 3-1 against Stockport Sports, whilst Gate drew 0-0 with Colne on Tuesday. Gate started the better of the two sides and could have been ahead after just 5 minutes but Alex Murphy's strike was always rising. Harry Dunn was next to take aim but Maine Road's keeper got well behind the ball. It took the home side near 10 minutes for them to have a real chance but their left back's shot from outside the area was tipped over by the ever impressive Ben Fletcher. The opening goal to the game came in favour of Squires Gate. The ball falling to Mark Buchan in the area and with the Maine keeper in no man's land Buchan had an empty net and couldn't really miss. That makes it 2 goals in 3 games for the Scot as he looks to cement his place and continue to make an impact. Soon after Harry Dunn had the chance to put Gate further in front but his shot flew straight across goal. Maine Road started to improve as the first half went on and equalised on 33 minutes. Gate struggled to defend from the free kick and Rory Breslin scored directly from the free kick to make it all level going into the second half. Into the second half and it started much like the first, both teams clearly getting a telling off from their managers at half time as both appeared early and fired up. Both teams looked alot more attacking in the second half with both having several chances early into the half. But it was Gate who made the chances count first Alex Murphy beat the last man easily slot past the goal keeper on 50 minutes. Then just 3 minutes later Murphy struck again, slick movement in the box to create space from himself allowed him to smash the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-1 to Squires Gate. Gate looked to hold onto their lead and for large periods of the second half had alot

Lytham 2-6 SQUIRES GATE A difficult preliminary draw saw Gate face Lytham Juniors away from home for the second time this season. The previous trip saw Squires come out on top 5-2. The first half started with a lot of sloppy passing and break downs in attack for both teams. The first real opening of the game was when a fluent passing move found Josh Dolby-Armstrong made the Lytham Keeper pull off a fine save. That was all of the action until a free kick on the edge of the gate box, a fine strike found the top left corner. That seemed to shake the boys and they began to play, Jack Robinson dribbled past two players to be brought down in the penalty area, he stepped up and placed the corner into the bottom right hand corner. Gate then dictated the final 5 minutes of the The game was a completed contrast in the second half with Gate playing with a freedom they failed to find in the first half. Immediately a goal came through the tireless Brogan Grundy. A third was quick in coming when Grundy won a penalty that Robinson dis-

patched. Another goal came as a goal kick from Harry Ahern, was flicked precisely into the path of DolbyArmstrong who travelled from the half way line and fired a shot with his weak foot across goal hitting the far post and finding the back of the net. Robinson then completed his hat-trick when the ball was delivered from Lucas Miller and Robinson headed past the Lytham Keeper Lytham then scored a consolation that Ahern was unlucky to not keep out. The final goal of the game was scored by McKenzie Marazuk-Webster who finished a one and one chance that had been delightfully set up by Dolby-Armstrong. The game was dictated by the midfield 4, Dimitri Jackson, Connah Trevelyan, Goulding and Miller. JULY Sun 5

PARKING

Congleton Town 1 In what was our last home game of the season, we faced a Congleton side who had a track record of beating us near the end of the season. After a fantastic campaign, which saw Gate finish 6th, an Ash Rowley goal was enough to earn a point.

There is free parking outside the ground and in the clubs car park.
