FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK “I’D LIKE TO CONGRATULATE TADDY ON BEHALF OF THE WHOLE PLAYING AND COACHING STAF ON THE GREAT NEWS. HE’S BEEN A GREAT SERVANT TO THE CLUB” Good afternoon everyone,

We welcome Maine Road to the Brian Addison stadium as we look to put back to win league wins on the board for the first time this season. When we visited Maine Road earlier in the season we were well and truly beaten. They were quicker sharper and better in every department that day and I know we've learnt lessons going into today's game. They have had a good run of late and are 5 games unbeaten so it shows there bang in form. Knowing all this I'm expecting one of outlet toughest home games so far. Last weekends postponement was disappointing as the lads wanted to play. We had a good session midweek and are raring to go. As I've mentioned previously competition for places is high within the squad and everyone deserves a game. I just have to find the right combination to go out there any win. I'd also like to congratulate Taddy on behalf of the whole playing and coaching staff on the great news. He's been a great servant to the club and the honour is thoroughly deserved. Let's hope it's a cracker and we can keep this unbeaten run going! Up the gate!

Danny .

CAMMELL LAIRD 0 SATURDAY JANAURY , 7 THE BRAIN ADDISON STADIUM ATTENDANCE: 70 GATE: GRIFFITHS, CARROLL,HIGHAM,HALL,PENSWICK,ROSSALL, RICHARDS THORNBER (GIBSON74) ,DAWSON(MOXON 77) BAMBA(NOBLET 65),B.SEEAR CAMMELL LAIRD:

Squires Gate started 2017 in the best possible way with three points in a 2-0 home win against bottom of the league Cammell Laird 1907. Lairds are yet to pick up a win this season sitting bottom of the league but asked question of Gate over the 90 minutes despite their position. Manager Danny Penswick named an unchanged side from last Saturday's 1-1 draw with top of the league Runcorn Town and was able to welcome back a strong bench. Paul Alexander, Jamie Gibson, Joe Noblet and Tarren Moxon making up the four man bench , all usually regular starters. Before the game the club announced that the ground would be renamed after club stalwart Brian Addison. Brian has volunteered at the club in all capacities for over 50 years. Gate made the perfect start to the game opening the scoring after four minutes. After a fairly even looking start, where both teams looked matched, striker for the day Seydou Bamba found the net. Bamba was found with a clever ball in between the defence to run onto. He latched onto the pass and cleverly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper to give Gate the lead. Lairds then went on to have a couple of chances from freekick's but couldn't convert from either. The first came just over the half way line but was easily caught by Griffith in net. Then a couple of minutes later Lairds would get another chance. From around the same area they fired in a freekick which dropped to the big striker, but he fired well wide.

PARKINSON,REILLY,STEWART,BAINBRIDGE.ROO NEY,MURRAY,MAS0N,TONER,MACINNES, The visitors then had their best chance of the first half after 16 minutes. The ball was fired low across POMEYIE,MALDON the goal but no one from either team could get the vital touch.

Gate came back into the game after Lairds spell of pressure. Good work from Jake Higham to get forward from left back be he was dispossessed near the corner flag. The ball fell to Seydou Bamba but his cross in was easily collected by the keeper. Then three minutes later Brett Dawson was denied by a superb save from the Lairds keeper. Dawson picked the ball up from outside the box, but his low drive was pushed wide by the keeper, much to Dawson's amazement. Gate came out for the second half and looked to have dropped off from their first half display. Lairds could have equalised on 55 minutes when Jake Higham almost turned the ball into his own net. The ball was fired across the goal but Higham had the call to leave the ball with nobody around him. Soon after though Gate would put the game out of doubt. Sub Joe Noblet with a superbly weighted ball to find the run of Dawson in behind. The striker took the ball in his stride into the box and gave the keeper the eyes. Laird's shot stopper stopped on the spot and Dawson easily took the ball around him to score. Sub Tarren Moxon could have added another for Gate late on when his long rang effort curled just wide of the post. His fellow sub was just as unlucky a couple of minutes later when he almost scored direct from a corner, only to be denied by a shocked keeper..

Q&A This week we caught up with Gate Midfielder Mark Thornber (sparky), Sparky joined gate with Paul Carroll and the Seear’s Brother from AFC Blackpool at start off the season and has been a rock in midfielder this season. We interviewed about his time at Gate and about Football in general. What encouraged you to start playing foot- If you could pick one team for Squires Gate If you could change one rule in the game, ball? Which players inspired you as a kid? to come up against in a friendly, which what would it be and why? Getting into football was an absolute guarantee team would you want to go up against? Rule change without doubt has to be the Gate v an old school Lytham town team. I spent nonsense of the added time. Do it properly! for me, i was (still am football mad). Stickers, kits, balls and we all had a pair of keeper gloves. some great years there, with amazing friends and And drop balls, lets compete for them. won the lot. If you were to play in a 5 a side team with So when the time was right my old man took me There has been goals galore at Squires any 4 players of your choice, past or preto a club. My out and out inspiration was my Gate this season, what is the mentality sent, who would you pick and why? dad but if your asking me for a player, without a behind the team compared to last season? Do you remember the first game and i love that. Play to your strengths. you played in? Or the first goal you ever Do you remember your first ever game and Yea loved a 16 Keane shirt had them the scored? day they came out religiously for years. goal for Gate? My first ever experience of football was at 5yrs old, nipper (my dad) took me down to a Clifton rangers Saturday morning club and since then i have played every seasonal weekend for the past 26years. I remember lots of snippets from my early years playing, they all took place on either a cow field, road, car park or in the middle bit of an estate 20v20 with a knackered leather case football. Earliest goal i can remember was in a semi final cup game for Ymca, a feisty affair against local rivals Poulton. Anyone that knows me remembers my old long flowing locks i used to have this brought attention good and bad on this occasion i was centre of it all. So to score from 30 yards out, last minute, left foot, top bin was something il never forget. Its fair to say i let Poulton parents, friends and associated have it after i scored. Then i got banned for my celebration we wont go into that.

If you weren’t a midfielder, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time? I'm nothing but a midfielder i would enjoy it as much and at my age its about the enjoyment. So until I'm 35 I'm a midfielder then and only then i may slide into our ever ageing back four. What is your favourite celebration when you score a goal? What is the best celebration you’ve ever seen? Celebrations? Not so many of them these days but cant go wrong with a simple Alan shearer, straight arm in the air directly next to your ear.

First ever game was at old Trafford 4years old going on to be a season ticket holder for 24 years. Can’t remember the game but i loved everything about going to Utd. Its my second spell at gate and we have the same great people still at the club as my first spell. Great important people all playing their own little unsung role to make squires gate the club it is. Look at "taddy" recently having the stadium named after him. Class. He was here when nipper played that’s why we love gate.

If you could bring 3 PL players to Squires Gate on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Id sign Zlatan because id like his arrogance in our changers, Herrera because id love to see if is as good as i think he is and Charlie Adam because i know him!

What is the last thing you do before you walk out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Who would be your dream Midfielder part- Last thing i do is get round the lads get loud ner if you could play with anyone, past or and tell them how good they are and try present? squeeze that extra 10% out of them. Dream midfielder partner to play with would have to be scholes.id give him the ball every single time I had it.

Who would you say has been the best opposition to come to Gate this season, and who has been the toughest to play against within your time here? Personally, although not a league game playing against the likes of Chorley stand out for me. Tough organised footballing outfits are the games you want to play in. Favourite ground that you have played at? Biggest ground I’ve played at is Elland Road but the best regarding surface is Leyland FA.

What is your expectations from Rest off season and where would like us to finish ? We've played some of tough games this year and had some great results i expect a little more consistency and for us to largely improve against the teams around us. Do that and we will earn far more points than we did in 2016. Top 10

Prediction for the game? To be honestly blunt we got nothing less than a hiding against these at their place so in my mind that's the motivation and no team talk required. Put right the wrongs and we will be are a match for anyone in this league including taking all 3 points today. Up the gate.

Q&A This week we caught up with player manager Danny Penswick, where he gives us his review on 2016 and what he’s expatiations was for this season. We also ask him about his time at gate and if he could bring an Premier league player to gate who would he pick. After last year experience what's was did you experience for this season?

Players should be able to speak to the referee. I've never understood how a referee can deem a player unsuitable for conversation. As high as possible, I knew we'd improved In rugby they explain there decisions which the squad so I thought we'd improve in breeds mutual respect. In football the referterms of position. It's always hard to know ee often refuse to speak to players and/or by how much until the season starts but I'm explain there decisions. It breads a culture happy with where we're at currently. I'd say of conflict which is why you see so many we're about 10 points behind where we referees getting stick. I think if they showed should be based on our performances so I'm players some respect they'd be surprised hoping we improve as we move forward. just how much easier there job would be With not long left in the season do

With this being your first season in charge what did u experience to finish I've enjoyed it, it's been a learning curve but this season? thoroughly enjoyable. I've enjoyed the way we've approached this season. How we've attacked and tried to play front foot football.

What has been the best result so far this season? Probably our 2-0 win away at Bootle. They were flying and we came into the game short on numbers. Words won't really describe what happened but it's fair to say it was a good day.

Who was the toughest team that you feel we have played against this season? Maine Road away was a difficult day. They were sharper, hungrier and better all over the pitch. In terms of best team that I've seen it would have to be Atherton Colls, for me the standard which we should aspire to and my favourites for promotion.

With only a few games left what are your expectations for the rest off the season and where would u like to finish? As high as possible. I go into every game believing we can win. Where we end up we'll see but I see no reason why we can't finish top half.

Do you remember your first game for Squires Gate if so what was the score? My debut was at home against Silsden a few years ago. I scored but had a mare. I remember Macca subbing me after about an hour. I was surprised he gave me that long to be honest.

think we need make any improvement If could bring any 3 BPL player to Gate in any position for the rest off the sea- who would they be and why? son? David Luiz, Joey Barton and Zlatan We need to improve in every position, we can never stop improving. That doesn't mean we need new players it means we have to maximise the potential of the players we have. We've proved against the top teams that we can match them we just need to add consistency to our play. If we do that we'll continue to improve. better stories than Nobby I

f you could change one rule in football what will it be?

If you could play a friendly with any team in BPL who would it be and why? Liverpool - just for a Klopp cuddle

If you was a manager of a 5 a side team and u have to pick 2 Gate and 3 BPL player who would they be and why? Mike Hall, David Luiz, Philip Countiho, Zlatan and Stinger - a Manager should never have to justify his team selection.

Finally prediction for today game 2-0 to SGFC

MIDDLE OF THE PARK Rory Breslin Positon: Midfielder Apps: 16 Goals: 0 The midfielder probably holds the most appearances for Maine Road in their current team and has played for the club at the level for several seasons. Not afraid to tackle but can always pop up with a goal aswell. With experience in higher levels he will bit off a handful for Gate back line today, he will be looking to put as many balls in the box as possible. Rory hasn't scored yet but they still time to get a few to names in the coming weeks.

THE FINISHER Matthew Morgan Positon: Striker Apps: 28 Goals:9 Morgan lined up top with another striker up top when we played them earlier in the season and looked very dangerous. Little and pacy he's another that's come up from the reserves and looks quality. With his pacy and talent gate back line will wont just need to watch him in the box but down winger. Morgan has already got 9 goals to his name but with his talent

The club was formed in 1955 by supporters of Manchester City under the name City Supporters Rusholme, when past Chairman Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies. Soon after that, the club joined the local Rusholme Sunday League and Thompson became the Chairman. In the late sixties they changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday league and also moved their headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club, and that's when the new name Maine Road FC was born. A man called Ronnie Meredith was the driving force behind the club in the Seventies. in 1971–72 Maine Road won their first league Manchester County Sunday Cup and Cup Double. The success prompted Meredith to look for bigger challenges and he changed the whole future of the club by moving to Saturday football in the form of the Manchester League. Maine Road won the Manchester Premier Cupin 1975–76, beating Abbey Hey in the final and again in 1976–77, when Maine Road beat Little Lever in the final. More success followed on the field and after several years of moving grounds, Club finally settled on a permanent home in 1980. Brantingham Road in Chorlton is where the club still play today. After an initial lean spell at the new ground, The club then won the Manchester League four times consecutively from 1982–83 to 1985–86. Throughout the same decade, they set a record by Maine Road won the Manchester Premier Cupin 1975–76, beating Abbey Hey in the final and again in 1976–77, when Maine Road beat Little Lever in the final.

The blues first chance came from a counter-attack through Rhys Clooney. as he had moved across the back line and was sent through early by Matthew Morgan. Rhys Clooney had battled himself in to an advanced position and laid the ball off to the on rushing Connor Hughes who pulled back his left-foot and blazed over the bar. The game continued in this manner with 1874 passing and probing for an opening and the blues catching them on the counter-attack. The next chance of the game came from former Maine Road forward Tom Bailey who received the ball on the edge of the box and curled the ball towards the top corner. Fortunately, the ball drifted wide. As the game continued to be played at a frantic pace it was Rhys Clooney who was utilising his own pace to gallop in to the open space. As he received the ball just inside the visitors box he pulled the ball back to Matthew Morgan who hit a first time shot which was blocked. However, the ball bounced favourably for Connor Hughes who fired goal wards but again the ball travelled up and over the bar. It was Connor Hughes second game in a week and with more fitness and practice I'm sure these will be the type of chances he will be dispatching in the not too distant future. The blues continued to catch 1874 out on the counter and it was Matthew Morgan who had the next chance after some great skill. As the blues won the ball back Calum Broady passed the ball forward in to Connor Hughes who found an inch perfect pass to Matthew Morgan who had two to beat. He glided past both defenders with ease and found himself narrowing in on goal. He pulled his left-foot back and aimed across the 1874 keeper and it appeared to be heading in the goal. Unfortunately, some great defending from the 1874 defender who had got a block on the shot and it deflected wide. Despite having the better of the chances in the first-half it was 1874 who came the closest in the first-half. A long ball in to the experienced Carey found Maine Road light at the back. The ball was flicked on to Tom Bailey who ran through 1v1 with Ryan Livesey. Keeper Ryan Livesey made himself big and blocked the shot with his feet. It was a good save from the keeper who has appeared to return to some good form in recent weeks. The half-time whistle came and both teams could've felt unfortunate not to take the lead. The second-half started in much of the same fashion. 1874 having more of the ball but the Road looking good on the counter-attack. Louie Inniss created the first chance of the half. Calum Broady played the ball wide to Louie Inniss who advanced forward. He took a big touch out of his feet and then whipped a wonderful ball in to box. Connor Hughes had read the flight of the ball and got in between his markers. He rose well and headed goal wards but the ball travelled up and over the ball. After this 1874 were starting to stamp their authority on the game and the blues counter-attacks were becoming less frequent. 1874 had a big chance just after the hour mark. They attacked down the right and they smashed the ball across the face of the box. Former Maine Road player Sam Hare slid in at the far post to tap home. As he slid in he was inches away and it was a big escape. As 1874 continued to mount pressure the blues continued to stand strong. Louis Edwards and captain John Mason organising and defending superbly throughout. At this point 1874 were becoming more and more frustrated as time was running out. Nevertheless, they were restricted to long distance shots which didn't trouble Ryan Livesey in goal. Our midfield four of Josh Tinker, Calum Broady, Jamie Roe & Matthew Morgan were working tirelessly in front of the back four giving them great protection. Some fresh legs were brought on to try and give the blues some impetus in attack and to try get the blues out of their half. Despite the fresh legs 1874 continued to press for the winner. However, despite all of the good play it was a long ball from 1874 keeper which opened up the blues. The long ball forward deceived John Mason who could only head the ball backwards. The returning Tom Bailey latched on to the loose ball and dispatched the 1v1 in to the bottom corner. It was sickening blow for the blues who had worked so hard only to lose a goal late on.

GATE NEWS

BUCHAN MOVES TO WELSH CLUB CONWY BOROUGH FC Front man crosses the border to join former manager in Wales... Squires Gate can confirm that last season's top goal scorer Mark Buchan has joined Huws Gray Alliance Welsh side Conwy Borough. The Scottish striker was a key part in Gate retaining our NWCFL Premier Division status last season, scoring 17 goals in 42 games including some important ones towards the end of the season. Buchan made his debut for the club in a 0-0 draw with St Helens Town back in 2014, going onto score 11 goals in 29 appearances for the club. Last season was the striker's best for Gate, scoring 17 goals in 42 games for Gate. This season saw his opportunities limited and he made just 16 appearances though still scoring a respectable 6 goals. Mark Joins bottom of the league Conwy and links up with former manager Brian Pritchard who managed the striker at Witton Albion. On Mark's departure from the club, manager Danny Penswick had this to say: "I'd like to wish Mark Buchan all the best as he embarks on a new challenge in the Welsh League. He's been a great servant to both me and the club over the past couple of seasons. He was a leader on and off the pitch and his presence in the dressing room will be a miss. He finished last season as the clubs top scorer and played a vital role in our survival. Opportunities have been harder to come by recently and I fully understand Marks desire to play football. Good luck for the future and thanks for keeping me in a Job" Everyone at Squires Gate FC would like to wish Mark all the best of luck

SQUIRES GATE 0

MAINE ROAD 5 SATURDAY 19TH DECEMBER 2015 It was Maine Road who started the first half the better and was probably the better team for most of the first 45. The dangerous front two of Morgan and Wilson offering a constant danger to Gates backline. It was Wilson who had the first shot of the game but he dragged it wide of the post. Road created plenty of chances early on looking to get the ball to the front men and get shots away as soon as they could. The away side made the early pressure count as on 16 minutes they took the lead. In what was a mistake by Gate keeper Fletcher who seemed to have dealt with the tame shot from Hill but as he caught the ball seemed to turn his body and take the ball across the line. Gate tried to find an instant reply after going behind but long shots from both Richards and Kay didn’t trouble to Maine Road keeper. Maine Road kept up their early pressure and made it two after 22 minutes. Roe won the tackle in midfield and was quick to play the ball forward to find the run of Morgan. He cut the ball back to the waiting Wilson on the penalty spot who had time to control the ball and fire past Fletcher. Mark Buchan had a chance to get one back for Gate on 26 minutes but his free kick was easily saved. Joe Noblet was the next to try his luck but his shot from outside the box was easily saved. Road had the chance to make it three before half time but Hill’s drive flew across the box and nobody could get a touch. The same ending came when Billy McKenna took aim with is strike also going wide of the post.

The first chance of the second half fell to Josh Kay after four minutes but his curled shot towards the top corner was well saved. Mark Buchan was the next to take aim for Gate but his header from the corner was wide after 55 minutes. Despite Gates good start to the second half Maine Road would find the net again. Wilson’s run found in behind Gate, he control the ball before spinning around Fletcher and tapped the ball into the net. Billy McKenna had the next chance to try and grab a goal back for Gate after being sent down the right he shot from a tight angle and stung the palms of the keeper. The introduction of new signing Tarran Moxon from Lytham Town livened up Gates attacking options with 25 minutes to go. It was Moxon who had the next chance but his backwards header from the corner couldn’t find a teammate. Road would again catch Gate on the break and made it 4-0 in the 65th minute. Sub Michael Burke finishing from a tight angle at the near post. Gates last chance of the game came 5 minutes from time. Moxon cutting the ball back to try and find Colquhoun but the ball was cut out before it could reach him

MAINE R0AD 3 SQUIRES GATE 1 SATURDAY 9TH JANAURY 2016 Maine Road had the first chance of the game when Jamie Roe made a late run to the edge of the box but he fired over. Gate played some good football early on when Buchan sent Billy McKenna through but no one could meet his cross. McKenna again made good ground down the line he whipped the ball across the face of goal to find Buchan at the back post who got a touch to take it into the bottom corner and open the scoring for Gate. Road didn’t test debutant Thompson in net until the 28th minute. Gates next chance came from the corner but Trout’s header was cleared off the line. From the clearance the ball fell to Buchan at the edge of the box who hit the ball on the half volley but the ball fell the wrong side of the post. But for all Gates good pressure Road would equalise. Bang on 45 minutes Roads left back switched the ball to the opposite wing who fed the winger in front of him. He surged into the box a calmly slotted the ball past Thompson to equalise. The home side continued their momentum into the second half and took the lead after 51 minutes. A dodgy decision from the official who penalised Trout for handball and booked him. A clever free kick carved Gate open with the man in the wall running the other side to be found and he scored the home sides second. As time played on Gate bought Mike Hall onto the pitch and he made an instant impact. First his low ball into the box was close to finding Buchan before he was involved in a lovely a Gate move. Hall laid the ball back to Colquhoun who spread the ball wide to find the run of Higham forward from left back he whipped in a superb cross but Fielding in goal smothered that before Buchan could meet it. Joe Noblet had the chance to level the game with a late run into the box on 75 minutes but his half volley was wide. Billy McKenna had another chance after the ball fell to him from the corner but his cross into the box clipped the crossbar and went out. Soon after down the other end Maine Road could have scored a third had it not have been for Thompson in net. He did very well to rise above the Road attackers from the corner to take the ball off the home sides captains head before he could meet it. Thompson was having a good game for Gate and it would have been harsh to blame him for either of the goals. Ash Rowley made his way onto the pitch to replace Joe Noblet with 20 minutes left as Gate switched to a more direct attacking style with Josh Westwood also moving up top and Danny Penswick dropping back into the back four. But this didn’t help Gate who conceded a third four minutes from full time. Home substitute Connor Hughes finding the ball at his feet he side footed the ball to place it into the bottom corner.

GATE LOSE 5-1 IN A DRUB AND DULL DAY IN DERBYSHIRE GLOSSOP NORTH END 5 SQUIRES GATE 1 Saturday 25th January 2014

Squires Gate had four changes from the winning side that beat Winsford United last week, for the trip to a rain sodden pitch at Glossop, and with a storm an hour before the game made it impossible to see through. But it was Gate who got their eye in to the game first, and were on the attack pinning the home side back from the start. It only took 7 mins for Charlie Russell, who this week had been called up for the English Schools squad, to put the visitors into the lead, collecting the ball on the right and giving the home keeper no chance with his low shot. It took the home side who have been on a run of picking up 25 points in the last 9 games, a while to settle and show why they are sixth in the table. But when they pushed into the Gate area, and the ball was not cleared it fell to pivot Lincoln Adams, who beat Rogerson in Gate’s goal, to equalise. Gate managed to see out the first half on level terms, unable to capitalise on the chances they made. The second half saw Glossop gaining in confidence and putting more pressure on the Gate goal, but the 2nd goal on 58 mins saw Kieran Lugsden score after Dave Rogerson had clearly been knocked down in the area, but the foul was apparently missed by all the officials. Three mins later home striker Tom Bailey scored the third, giving the home side more berating space, as Gate pushed forward in an attempt to pull back the deficit.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY In our regular feature, we take a look back on this week in football history. `

THE AYRESOME PARK COLLAPSE

1980

On 12 January 1980, a portion of Middlesbrough's Ayresome Park collapsed, killing two people. It was the start of a terrible trend in football for the coming decade. Boro season-ticket holders Irene and Norman Roxby were exiting the ground (pictured) by the South East corner after a 1-1 draw with Manchester United when a brick pillar crumbled, bringing two gates down with it. The Roxbys were crushed by the debris. Some witnesses to the event blamed it on a group of visiting Manchester United supporters, saying they rushed the gates after the match, triggering the collapse. In their defense, however, the United supporters claimed that the rush was sparked by efforts to get away from an over-excited police horse Subsequent reports revealed that Middlesborough's safety certificates for the stadium had not been kept upto-date, though the club claimed that any violation was merely technical and that all safety requirements were either met or exceeded at the time of the incident. The deaths of the Roxbys were soon dwarfed by larger football-related disasters, including massive losses of life at Moscow's Lenin Stadium in 1982, Bradford City's Valley Parade ground in 1985, Belgium's Heysel Stadium in 1985, and Hillsborough in 1989. The Taylor Report followed the latter in August 1989, recommending the elimination of standing areas in favor of all-seater grounds. That requirement ultimately doomed Ayresome Park, which made way in 1995 for Middlesbrough's new Riverside Stadium

ZOLA MAGICAL MYSTERY GOAL

On 16 January 2002, Gianfranco Zola scored a remarkable back-heeled goal as Chelsea rolled over Norwich City in the FA Cup, 4-0. The Third Round match was a replay, with the two sides having drawn 0-0 at Norwich's Carrow Road ground 11 days earlier. Back at Stamford Bridge, the hosts wasted little time, taking the lead in the 11th minute with a header from Mario Stanić. Norwich tried to rally with a strong push around both sides of halftime, but Chelsea weathered the challenge, then extended their lead with a goal from Frank Lampard (56').Zola's moment of brilliance arrived in the 63rd minute, as he met a corner from teammate Graeme Le Saux. As the ball dropped outside the near post, the 35-year old striker met it in midair with his right foot and back-heeled it behind his body. It skimmed just inside the post past the outstretched arms of Norwich keeper Rob Green. Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri later described the goal as "fantasy" and "magic," while referring to Zola as a "wizard." Zola himself said "Don't ask me how I did it, because I don't know." Chelsea proceeded to win the match 4-0 with the last goal coming from Mikael Forssell (89') and eventually reached the FA Cup Final where they lost to Arsenal.

YOU DON’T NEED TO SHOOT TO SCORE On 20 January 2010, Monaco secured an away victory at PSG despite not having a single shot on goal.

Playing before a crowd of 36,000 at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain were suffering through a poor run of form that dropped them down into tenth place in the table after losing two of their last three in the league. They had also just been eliminated from the Coupe de la Ligue by Ligue 2 side Guingamp. Monaco, meanwhile, had climbed to fifth after going unbeaten in their previous five league matches. Still, PSG started as the stronger of the two teams on the day and had several early chances denied by the woodwork and a handful of fine saves from Monaco keeper Stephane Ruffier. Ruffier continued his excellent play in the second half to again deny a couple of PSG shots when disaster struck for the hosts. Monaco midfielder Eduardo Costa sent an innocuous cross into the box only to see it deflect into the goal off the leg of PSG keeper Apoula Edel. It turned out to be the only goal of he match. By the final whistle, Monaco had managed to take 10 shots, but not a single one on goal. PSG, on the other hand, put nine of their 19 shots on frame, but all nine failed to get past Ruffier. But they got their revenge later that May, beating Monaco 1-0 in the Coupe

de France Final
