DANIEL PENSWICK “THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS AN EASY GAME AT THIS LEVEL…” Good evening, Tonight we welcome Nelson to the RBL stadium as we look to shake off the weekends disappointment and get back to winning ways. This will be our third home game in the space of a week, and so far we have struggled to get the wins that we wanted. I would like to welcome the Nelson committee, fans and players to Squires Gate and hope that you enjoy the game.
Nelson arrive on the back of a convincing victory this weekend and will be keen to build on it. They look to have assembled a young hungry squad who will no doubt give us a stern test tonight. They currently sit 19th in the league but they are a strong side and will be challenging the top teams come the new year, I’m positive of that.
“A young hungry squad who will no doubt give us a stern test tonight.” Results over the past week haven't gone to plan but I think everyone will agree that Saturday provided more positives than negatives. We dominated the game for large periods even with 10 men and the character the lads showed was great to see. When Ric equalised, I felt that we could hold on to see the game into a replay but we crumbled and let Handsworth take control of the game and we got punished.
“Saturday provided more positives than negatives” I'm hoping that same commitment can be maintained throughout the season and particularly tonight. The lads have been working hard in training as always and they’ll be hungry to add to our points tally tonight. As lasr week showed there’s no such thing as an easy game at this level so we will have to make sure that we are fully concentrated from the first minute until the last. On the injury front Joe Noblet is still struggling with a calf problem and Jake Higham is unavailable. Apart from that I'm expecting a response to our recent results. Up the Gate

R.TANSER 10 10 K.WELLS B.SEEAR 11 11 T.DUGDALE (BUTTLE 72) This weekend marked the seventh annual Non League Day which coincides with the international break. It offers the chance for fans of league clubs to take in football at their local non league club which was evident at School Road today with plenty of new faces. Should Gate win this FA Cup tie today they would equal the clubs best ever run for 12 years. Gate got to this stage of the competition with wins over Maltby Main and West Didsbury & Chorlton.Gate had all but one player available after Tuesday night's 3-2 loss at home to AFC Darwen. Midfielder Joe Noblet missing out and probably returning next Saturday. The visitors first chance came after 11 minutes. They caught Gate on the break with the winger breaking forward and firing in a shot but Fletcher did well to stretch and tip the ball over the crossbar. An equally good save from the visiting keeper kept out Ben Seear three minutes later when he just got a finger tip to the ball to tip it over the bar from Seear's header from a freekick. Seear wouldn't have to wait long for another chance when he found the net on 25 minutes. Mike Hall playing the ball into the box with the outside of the boot found the head of Seear, he headed the ball down and into the bottom corner to put Gate in the lead! Perhaps the turning point in the game came on 30 minutes when Gate midfielder Mike Hall was shown a straight red card. Hall judged to have lashed out after the foul by the Handsworth attacker. They quickly made the man advantage count when two minutes later Danny Holland knocked the ball past Fletcher to level the game. It was the visitors Handsworth who came out the blocks second half and took the lead after a minute. Striker Danny Holland scoring his second of the game after a mix up at the back for Gate allowed him to tap in. Handsworth then could have had a second a minute later but the referee pulled the game back for handball. It wasn't long before Gate would get themselves back into the game. Ben Seear being bundled over in the box 8 minutes after Gate conceded. Seear picked himself up and handed the ball over to his twin Ric, who calmly slotted the ball to the right of the keeper to bring Gate level. What followed was a mad last 30 minutes in the game. Many around the ground would have thought looking at the game that it would be going to a reply on Tuesday night with both teams cancelling each other out.
A freekick right on the edge of the penalty area rebounded off the wall into the path of a Handsworth player who crossed the ball back in to find Gaz Griffiths to head past Fletcher at the back post. The away side would then add another two minutes later when Kieran Wells headed past Fletcher from the corner. Another three minutes later and they'd score again, Gate having to attack to try

PADIHAM 0 SQUIRES GATE 1 Squires Gate faced recently relegated Padiham on Wednesday night searching for their first league win of the season. Gat were in good spirits coming into the game with Danny Penswick feeling confidant they could win the game. Penswick chose to recall Anthony Stayte to the side in place of Mckendrick who dropped to the bench. Joining him on the bench was new signing Joe Noblet who signed for the club from Kendal having previously played for Gate two seasons ago. Gate started the game on the front foot and showed early attacking intent. Nobody could get on the end of Richards early free kick into the box in the opening minutes of the game. Mark Buchan was next with a chance after he jinked past his defender but his shot went wide of the post. The home sides first chance of the game came when their centre back was forward from the back but his header went over the bar from the free kick. Josh Westwood had the next chance but Padiham’s keeper took the ball off Westwood’s head before he could connect with it. Josh Kay had Gates best chance after beating four men his shot was blocked by Bamba for Padiham. The home side had the last chance of the first half but Ex Gate player Alex Ralph’s shot was blocked by Westwood. Gate’s first chance of the second half came on the break but Buchan took a touch too many and the home keeper managed to scramble the ball away. Billy McKenna was in the rest place at the right time but he put the rebound wide of the post. Josh Kay had a great chance to open the scoring again but after he cut inside his shot cannoned off the inside of the post. Padiham caught Gate on the break but EX Gate player Alex Murphy was beat to the ball. 10 minutes on the home side almost scored by Richards was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line from a Fildes shot. Billy McKennafound space in behind the backline but he was closed down by the keeper who spilled the ball. The ball fell to Mark Buchan in the middle who jinked past his man and fired the ball into the back of the net with seven minutes of the game left. Gate’s last chance of the game saw them catch Padiham on the break with Penswick down the right hand side but his ball into the box was gathered by the goalkeeper. Gate held on until the final whistle to record their first league victory of the season PRICES ARE AS FOLLOWS: Adults £6 Concessions (Over 60 & Under 16) - £3 Under 12’s - FREE*
THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY As part of a new feature, we are going to look back on some famous news that happened in the footballing world during this week in history.
THAT FAMOUS NIGHT IN MUNICH
2001
It is a game that lives long in the memory of every English football fan. GERMANY 1 ENGLAND 5. A world cup qualifier hosted by Germany, with the two teams having a longstanding rivalry, highlighted by the 1966 World Cup win. Going into the qualifier, the overall record stood at 10 wins for England and 11 wins for Germany (including penalties) with 3 draws. Germany looked to continue their winning ways after Carsten Jancker opened the scoring in just the 6th minute. But Michael Owen, coming off a treble winning season with Liverpool, equalised 6 minutes later. England took the lead just before half time with a trademark Gerrard rocket! The second half belonged to England as Owen netted his second goal in the 48th minute, then completed his hat trick in the 66th minute after latching on from Gerrard’s precision pass. Emile Heskey rounded off the scoring in the 74th minute.
THAT’S ONE WAY TO WIN GOLD
1920
On 2 September 1920, Belgium took the gold medal at the summer Olympics after their opponents, Czechoslovakia, walked off the pitch in protest after 40 minutes. The Czechs had rolled through the preliminary rounds, racking up scores of 7-0 over Yugoslavia, 4-0 over Norway, and 4-1 over France. Belgium, as hosts, entered the tournament one round later and advanced with convincing wins over Spain and the Netherlands. The match was played in front of a crowd of 35,000 people at the Olympic Stadium in Antwerp. Belgium took an early lead with a 6th minute penalty and then doubled their lead in the 30th minute. Things continued to get worse for Czechoslovakia when the referee ejected their left back in the 40th minute. That proved to be the final straw for the Czechs who immediately walked off the pitch and did not return. They filed a subsequent protest, complaining that both of the goals were incorrect calls from the referee and the linesman, whom they also claimed to be biased. Their complaint was dismissed, however, and Belgium retained their gold medal. It remains the only time in a major tournament that one of the finalists has been disqualified.
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY FORMED
1867
On the 4th September 1867, the Wednesday Cricket Club decided to add football as a way to keep their players fit for the winter. The new sport’s popularity grew quickly however and soon became the dominant activity of the club, now known as Sheffield Wednesday FC. The club which took it’s name from the fact that it played its matches on a Wednesday and decided to form a football club in connection with above cricket club. They enjoyed a lot of early success, winning the FA Cup in 1896 then back to back league titles in 1903 and 1904. After a 2nd FA Cup in 1907, they went into a brief decline, dropping down to division 2 in 1920. They have spent the majority of their existence in the top flight and were

The 2014/15 saw Nelson return to the NWCFL Premier Division, after a 4 year absence having resigned from the league back in 2010. They finished in a solid 11th position, and recorded 16 wins netting 69 goals in the process. They will be looking to build on that this term, and will be aiming for a top half finish. The admirals became founder members of the new North West Counties Football League, joining in the third division. In their first season, 1982/83, they finished 10th (out of 18). In the 1986/87 season, the blues finished 4th which saw them get moved up to the second division, because the third division was scrapped. Despite finishing 16th in the second division, Nelson were forced to drop down to the West Lancashire League, due to their stadium not being up to the standards required, where they played for 4 seasons and struggled to finish any higher than 15th. After Victoria Park was upgraded, they were re-admitted to the North West Counties second division for the 1992/93 season. In the 1996/97 season, the admirals picked up some silverware as they won the Division Two trophy. In the 2000/01 season, there was some drama on the final day as Atherton LR and Nelson came head to head, with the winner getting promotion. Nelson had won the original game but the game had to be replayed, because of the fact that Atherton LR had fielded an ineligible player, and Atherton won the replay to snatch the third spot away from Nelson. In the 2005/06 season, they eventually won promotion to the First Division, finishing 3rd. In 2008/09, the First Division was renamed as the Premier Division, and despite winning just three home games, they finished in 17th position, 16 points clear of bottom club Atherton Collieries
LAST TIME OUT
NELSON 4 BARNTON 0 PREMIER DIVISION / LITTLE WEMBLEY / SATURDAY 3RD SEPBMBER The Admirals secured their first 3 points of the season in style yesterday, thrashing Barnton 4-0 at Victoria Park. Despite the awful weather, Nelson celebrated Non League Day with a comfortable win, goals from Zack Dale and Jake Townsend sending the Blues faithful home happy and lifting Eastwood's men out of the bottom three. Having lost 5 and drawn 1 out of their first 6 league games before yesterday's game and sitting bottom of the league, The Admirals were in desperate need off points on the board after one of the worst starts to a campaign in many years. The Blues dominated the game from the off as the heavy rain saw the ball zip across the famous Little Wembley surface as both teams try to cope with the conditions and impose themselves early on. Nelson looked to expose the Barnton defence with balls over the top and using their pace up front and out wide to good effect. A number of early chances fell their way but the Blues found the Barnton GK in good form, a top corner finger tip save the best moment of the first 20 minutes. Nelson were having plenty of the ball and creating opportunities, as they have in previous game but failed to capitalise, and so the first goal felt crucial to ensuring victory this time round. On the 39th minute their pressure fiinally counted, new signing Jake Townsend firing the ball home from the edge of the box for his first ever Nelson goal. 1-0 the nerves seemed to be lifted , in the stands and on the pitch and the Admirals began to press for second. They didn't have to wait long when 5 minutes later topot goalscorer Zack Dale raced through on goal before rounding the Keeper and placing the ball into the empty net giving Nelson a two goal lead to take into the half time break.

Zack Dale and new signing Jack Parker were combining well up front as Nelson played some excellent football full of confidence.

Having created numerous chances in the second half the third goal finally on the 67th minute when a penalty was awarded, allowing Zack Dale to calmly score from the spot. 6 minutes later it was 4-0, another penalty given to the Blues with Dale smashed in off the bar for his hattrick, taking his tally to 6 goals so far this season. It could have been more for Nelson but as the final whistle came the loud cheer from the stands said it all as the Blues picked up their first win of the season in style. 4 goals a clean sheet and a great team performance made it a Non League Day to remember at Nelson.
VIEW FROM THE AWAY END
NEIL MCGUINNESS
What are your expectations for the season? What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on last seasons? I never set expectations however I would like to see us push on for the Top half and then see where that takes us. Defensively although we have lost a few before Saturday's win in the League they were nearly all by tight margins, a settled back four free from injuries and I think we have the creativity in the ranks to open teams up and create chances and Zack Dale is knocking them in at the minute but I think we have goals right through the side. How did your preseason go? Did any players impress you? Pre Season went really well and a few players have stood out Zack Dale, Stevie James, Mo Nabeel & Ash Brierley but the amount of injuries as a side we have suffered has meant stop start for a lot of the ones involved pre-season and into the season which is unfortunate. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? Always look forward to the Local Derbies which are Padiham, Barlick Town & AFC Darwen and I have a soft spot for AFC Liverpool and there are a few new grounds to visit with teams promoted and also New Mills who came down. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to Gate? Any players that Gate fans should watch out for? That would be telling but definitely Zack and I have been very impressed with the new lads who have come into the squad for the last few games who have given us a little bit more width and pace. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Nelson? It's probably the first one I went to which was back in about 1979 when Nelson played Blackburn Rovers in a Pre-Season game in those days when there was No squad rotations or Youth Teams it was a full strength Rovers squad who I had read about in the local paper and one of my mates supported but the biggest thing I remember was being impressed by the then facilities & the name Little Wembley. Which players will be key for you this season? That's a really difficult question as I mentioned earlier with the injuries we have had and players work commitments it's still early days but if we can keep hold of the nucleus of the squad and they stay injury free they will all have a part to play. If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Danny Ings - great English player undervalued at the moment at Liverpool but hopefully for Danny that will change a player who always wears his heart on his sleeve. Danny Rose - fantastic left back good defender and boy can he bomb on and provide a cross. Coutinho - the little magician fleet of foot and always capable of scoring a fantastic goal as well as controlling games. Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? No. I’ve never been to Squires Gate, If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to pick 2 Nelson players and 3 PL legends. Who would be in your side? Steven James, Tony Adams, Gazza, Suarez & Zac Dale Have you ever been to Wembley before? What would be your ideal scenario there? Only been to the Old Wembley for a gig, ideal scenario would be watching Nelson in the FA Vase Final and then winning it. Prediction for tonight’s game? Nelson to win 2-0

Hanley Town v Irlam (Tues 19:45) Squires Gate v Nelson (Tues 19:45) West Didsbury v Runcorn Town (Tues 19:45)
OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks feature ex Bamber Bridge defender Paul Alexander
PAUL ALEXANDER
BRADLEY WICKS
The defender signed from Evo Stick side Bamber Bridge is a very good signing for this level. Can play either centre back or left back and is solid all round defender.
Phil Eastwood took charge of Nelson at the start of pre season and he said: "I'm really happy to be joining Nelson, a football club that is looking to build and achieve success," said Eastwood. "I had a decent career as a player and now I'm looking to become a successful manager here at Nelson Football Club." The Blues finished 16th last season with a young first team that at times averaged an age of only 21, and with Nelson's Under 16s enjoying an incredible treble winning season, Eastwood inherits a club full of promising youth to develop and the former Morecambe striker is aiming to build an exciting new era at a club that boasts a proud and famous history. He came here to build for success, the club has ambitions to progress and it's a good set up here so we're looking forward to getting started for this season
ZACK DALE
GROUNDHOP DIARIES
ADAM ROUSE
In our regular feature, we speak to groundhoppers from all over the country and ask them what the enjoy most about non league football, and why they started their groundhopping adventures. This week it is Adam Rouse, an Everton fan who has visited over 400 grounds. First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? I'd been to about half of the 92 watching Everton and wanted to complete it. Having done so I realised how much I enjoyed going to new grounds so kept it going with non league grounds. What is the best part about non league? Hard to say just one. Main ones would be the lack of a money obsession means everybody at a game whatever their role is there for the love. Also means it is very unusual to see boring negative tactics so the games in the main are good. How many grounds have you visited now? 486. As others can add a zero and then some I still regard myself as very much an amateur. Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? Goodison as an Evertoninan obviously also The Millerntor, St Pauli's in Hamburg, Prescot Cables, Lancaster City, Darmstadt. Are just a few of the many great ones I've been to. For obscure AB in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. Right at the end of the bus route as buses can't go further up the hill. Ground is cut into a hillside with snow capped hills behind one goal and the North Atlantic behind the other. Also has to be on the favourites list. What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) I went to the first ever final at the new Wembley to see Stevenage win the FA Trophy. On top of that I've seen various derbies and non league play off games including finals. Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? I have currently seen football in 33 countries including the four UK nations. I have an ambition to visit for football all UEFA nations but whether I'll ever achieve that I don't know. If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? (teams in brackets) Neville Southall (Everton) Gary Neville (Man Utd) Paolo Maldini (AC Milan) John Terry (Chelsea) Tony Adams (Arsenal) Patrick Vieira (Arsenal) Paul Scholes (Man Utd) Andrea Pirlon(AC Milan/Juve) Lionel Messi (Barcelona) Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd/Real Madrid) Gareth Bale (Tottenham) What has been the best goal you have ever seen? From PL to non league? Too many to remember. This season though a 40 yarder for Matlock. Worst miss by Rocky Baptiste from basically on the goal line. Worth searching for on YouTube. Have you ever been to Squires Gate before, if so what was the score? Yes. Went December 21 2013. 3-3 draw with the then called Bacup and Rossendale Borough. Decent game as I recall but abiding memory is of the walk back to the station and the weather being so bad it being a real battle to walk down the station steps to the platform. What has been the best, and worst game that you have watched this season? And during your adventures? This season best Torino 3-3 Genoa. Worst Edinburgh C 0-0 Queens Park (Queens Park won 3-1 on pens). So bad when it went to pens a voice from behind 'when it's 0-0 after 5 each does it go to sudden suicide?' Longer term as with best goal too many to mention or indeed remember.

NIGHT TO FORGET FOR GATE AS THEY CRUMBLE IN BARNOLDSWICK BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 4 SQUIRES GATE 0
.
TUESDAY 03 SEPTMBER 2013 Report by Albert Cooper
Squires Gate were on the road again, when they visited Barnoldswick Town. But they were not expecting the welcome they received, from the team that succumbed to neighbours, AFC Blackpool. The home side were quick onto the attack, and Ben Fletcher was the busiest man on the field, having to make saves that were near double figures in the first 30 mins. Despite the efforts from McKenna, in midfield, and Bamba and Ralph up front, it was Chris Ridehalgh who was first on the board with a goal in the 14th min. and only the hands of Ben Fletcher held Town at bay until Sam Howell made it two on 39 mins. Then Danny Boyle made it three on 43 mins , Sending the teams in for the interval 3-0 Shots from Russ McKenna, which was deflected, and Jack Hindle which the keeper saved. Lee Botham went up for a corner kick and won the ball in the air, but the keeper saved again. The second half was better for the visitors and Gate picked up their game, and brought on Subs Chris Churchman, and Alex Landless, but it was Barnoldswick Town’ s night, and Chris Ridehalgh, scored his second on 67 mins to settle the game at 4-0. Barlicks team towered in parts over Gate will all but a few Gate attacks getting close to the hosts keeper
WE’VE MET BEFORE? SQUIRES GATE 2 NELSON 2 TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 2015 Josh Kay returned from injury and made an instant impact. Just 7 minutes into the game Kay was sent through and saw the keeper off his line and made him pay. He side footed the ball up and over the keeper to put Gate in the lead. Nelson came back after the goal but Gate looked in control. Gates front three looked impressive but it was defender Josh Westwood who ran from his box to Nelsons to crest the next chance. When he eventually got into the box his shot couldn't match the superb run and the ball dribbled wide. The equaliser for Nelson was a mix of poor closing down by Gate and a superb shot by Wicks. The midfielder found himself with space at the edge of the box and fired into the top corner just before half time. Into the second half good work from Kay and Cummings to send the later in behind he pulled it back again for Kay but his shot went over the bar. The first chance of the second half for Nelson from a corner but the header was cleared off the line by Richards and into Fletcher hands. Gate followed up with good pressure resulting in two chances but first Penswick then Ferguson had their shots blocked. Peter Wright up front found space in behind but his shit was narrowly wide. Josh Westwood was next with a chance but his header from a corner could only find the top of the net. More pressure from Gate but no one could get on the end of the ball fired across the box. Gate took the lead late on when Cummings found space in behind to fire low past the Nelson keeper. But Nelson would get a goal of there own and with 5 minutes to go Ricky Mercer scoring from corner to level the game. In late drama in the game Gate could have scored late on but the ball was cleared off the line.
NELSON 1 SQUIRES GATE 3 TUESDAY 16TH FEBRUARY 2015 The game started with no real rhythm and saw a lot of free kicks and throwins early on. The first real chance of the game fell to the home side but their right winger fired over from outside the box. Gates first chance fell to Billy McKenna from the corner but he was tackled before he could get in his stride. Gate could have opened the scoring after 13 minutes but Josh Westwoods header was cleared off the line. Gate had several chances to counter from Nelson attacks but first McKenna then Noblet struggled to get shots away. Nat Taylor had Nelsons best chance of the first half when he fired a shot towards goal after Stayte lost sight of the ball. Brett Ferguson had the last chance of the half when he drifted inside from the wing but his shot was well over. The second half couldn't have started better for Gate who opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Nelson giving the ball away at the back aloud Joe Noblet to pick up the ball and he cooley slotted the ball past the Nelson keeper who left a lot of space on one side of the goal. The home sides heads seemed to drop and Gate would again exploit poor defending.Ryan Tanser picking up the loose ball to use his pace and beat the last defender and fire low past the keeper. Gates quick fire double would soon become a triple when 6 minutes later they added yet another. The home side caught short at the back again and in a 3 on 1 situation Noblet crossed the ball across the face of goal and Ferguson got to the ball first to tackle the ball into the net. It was a nervy last 30 minutes for Gate when Nelson got a goal back. Poor defending from the corner aloud the Nelson man to meet the ball first and head home. Billy McKenna had a great chance to score a superb goal with 10 minutes left of the game. He jinked and turned his way past 3 men but the end product was lacking and his shot went wide of the post. Nelson could have made it a nervy finish late on when they won the ball back from Gates through in. They burst forward in numbers but the substitute Morrison fired over the crossbar.
