FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK Good afternoon everyone, Today we welcome New Mills to the Royal British Legion Stadium. I’d like to welcome the players, committee and supporters to Squires Gate, in which is the second visit for them this season after knocking us out of the Macron Cup at the start of October. New Mills are in a similar position to us and will be looking at taking home a share of the spoils from the seaside. They haven’t won a league game in 11 but within that time they beat us on our own patch in a game I feel we were far from our best and they took advantage so today we will need to make sure that we don’t make the same type of mistakes. I feel results haven’t shown either of us justice, and we definitely could have picked up more points than we have in games

With just over half the season gone I feel it's a good time to take stock of where we are and where we'd like to be. In short it's been good but could be a lot better. We have grinded out some decent results and we’ve put in some great performances but on the other hand there has been some performances that have not been up to standards that I want. I'm under no illusions that recent results haven't been good enough and whilst performances have been pleasing it's a results business. This month we have picked up 1 point at home to a very organised Hanley Town side, but again we should not be in a position where we score 4 goals at home and only coming home with a point. It has been a tough month for us, with games against 3 of the divisions top sides but it’s no excuse. Last weeks game at Runcorn Linnets was disappointing but in the end they showed why they will be up there come the end of this season, because they can play for 90 minutes. I feel we're right on the cusp of handing someone a good beating and really kick starting our season again. We have a great squad here and depth all round the pitch and it really is a hard decision picking our starting 11 every weekend. We enter the game on the back of a positive performance last Saturday and a good session midweek. Confidence is high in the camp and we're really looking forward to it. I'm sure it'll be another cracker, hopefully with a Gate win included. Up the Gate

Squires Gate played out a thrilling game at home to newly promoted Hanley Town. Hanley got the better of Gate last time these two met with a 4-2 win and it was another thrilling game this time.

THE ROYAL BRISTISH STADIUM ATTENDANCE: 85 GATE: Fletcher, Stayte (Tanser 65’), Higham, Penswick (Hall 60’), Rossall, Bamba, Richards, Noblet (B. Seear 80’), Riley, R. Seear, Gibson

HANLEY TOWN: Hemmings, Skellern, Sheldon, Bristow, Blowers, Garsi, Errico, Mellor, Higham, Mountford, Edwards

Gate made a good start to the game and with a bit of luck could have gone ahead after a minute. A corner swung in was cleared away by Hanley after several Gate players had swung to shoot at it.

Hanley then had chances of their own first they played a short corner but that was cut out by Richards in the box. Then their winger fizzed a brilliant ball across the box but nobody could get a touch. Against the run of play the visitors would take the lead. The ball played inside to the unmarked Angelo Errico for his to unleash a fierce shot into the top corner.

As quickly as Hanley opened the scoring Gate instantly leveled it up. Joe Noblet's corner fell out to the feet of Andrew Richards and with shouts of offside from the Hanley players he slotted the ball under the keepers legs for his first of the season. Gate then took the lead a minute after leveling. Ryan Riley who impressed and scored mid week against Chorley, continued his good form with a strike that almost broke the back of the net.

Gate then could have extended their lead on 19 minutes, Ric Seear fouled just outside the box, Joe Noblet stepped up but fired just the wrong side of the post. Noblet then had another chance four minutes later when Ryan Riley lay the ball off to him on the edge of the box but his drive was the wrong side of the post

Gate had several corners and free kicks but struggled to convert any of the chances they'd created from them. The best of them came on 32 minutes. First of all Ric Seear's shot was blocked on the line. Then from the follow up corner Seydou Bamba rose highest but his header was just wide.

It would be Hanley Town who would end the half in the lead. A Hanley player seemingly looking for contact going down several times before the referee judged Ryan Stayte to have tripped him in the box. Angelo Errico then stepped up from the spot and fired past Ben Fletcher.

Ryan Tanser almost made an instant impact when he entered the field on his birthday weekend when he was whiskers away from Jake Highams cross into the box. But it would be Hanley who would grab another goal to extend their lead. Gate pilling men forward for a corner were caught with a quick counter from their own corner, striker Jonathan Higham finishing off the move for his third goal in three games.

Despite the visitors extending their lead, Gate's heads never dropped. They grabbed a goal back on 78 minutes through striker Ric Seear. Back from an injury he twisted and turned his way through the

Despite leading 1-3 at the break the homeside recovered in the second half to win the game 4-3.

MILLBANK STADIUM ATTENDANCE: 290 LINNETS: Hunt, McKenna, Aley, Morris, Holt, McCarthy, Wade, Hamid, Shanley, Houghton, Hickley

GATE: Fletcher, Richards, Higham (Buchan 83’), Hall, Alexander, Carroll, B. Seear, Noblet (Dawson 63’), R. Seear (Bamba 74’), Riley, Gibson

Gate had the first chance of the game after not even a minute when a freekick was awarded right in the corner, near the corner flag. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't capitalise with the delivery too heavy. From the following goal kick the homeside registered their
first chance. Mike Hall cutting out the pass into the box before a
curling shot from outside the box was fired narrowly wide. Gate then had two chances in quick succession. First Ric Seear was sent clear through but home keeper Tom Hunt did well to save the one on one. From the resulting Freekick Gate came close again but defender Paul Carroll's header was over the bar. Gate the had a succession of corners but couldn't capitalise from
either. First Joe Noblets corner had too much curl on it and went out for a goal kick. Then a minute later Noblet tried again but Linnets did well to scramble the ball away. Gate would then make the break through and finally find the back of the net. Left back Jake Higham getting forward to send a lovely low
ball across the face of goal found a Linnets defender who could only put the ball in his own net with Ric Seear putting pressure on him. It was then Linnets with the next chance as they tried to find a goal back in the game. A corner was cleared by Andrew Richards on the post
before Ben Fletcher saved the returning shot. Gate defended well again a couple of minutes later again from a corner. This time the corner was taken short but was easily cleared by Paul Carroll completed the
clearance. Linnets would eventually make their pressure count and equalised in the 37th minute. A cross played into the box was scrambled in by big striker Mark Houghton to score his 15th goal of the season. But as quickly as Linnets equalised, Gate would take the lead again. Some twin magic from the Seear twins when Ric Seear went down the byline and crossed into the back post to find his brother and twin, Ben to volley in.

It would be Seear again who add his and Gate's second 10 minutes into the second half. Ryan Riley's shot parried into the feet of Ben Seear who made no mistake to grab his second of the game.

Linnets grabbed a goal of their own back on 62 minutes. Paul Carroll penalised for a trip in the box, Linnets captain Kyle Hamid stepped up to convert the spot kick for his 15th goal of the season. Both teams still had their chances in the next 10 minutes but it would be again Linnets who would grab another goal to level the game. Kristian Holt tapping in at the back post to complete the comeback. Some teams would be happy with a 3-3 comeback but Linnets went one better. Sub Stuart Wellstead firing low past Fletcher who wasn't at fault for any of the goals.

Q&A We caught up with Squires Gate forward Mark Buchan and asked him a few questions about football and life in general. He talks about his first childhood memories of playing football, which 3 Premier League players he would bring to Squires Gate and which striker he would love to be paired up with. What encouraged you to start playing football? Which players inspired you as a kid?

I used to play centre mid when I was young, you could probably tell with how many chances I set up for Ric to miss against Irlam.

I end up running to the corner, jump and punch the air, don’t ask why? The best one has to be Gazza at Rangers playing the flute.

My first memories were playing football down in the park with my dad, he’s also very football orientated like me. My first goal? Probably playing first touch football coaching and we played our first 11 a side game and I dinked the keeper from 25 yards.

If you could pick one team for Squires Gate to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against?

If you weren’t a striker, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time?

Obviously Glasgow Rangers, who wouldn’t. There has been goals galore at Squires Gate this season, what is the mentality behind the team compared to last season?

has been the toughest to play against within your time here? They haven’t come here yet but playing West Didsbury twice so far I would say they play the best football and are a strong well organised outfit. Within my time here, it has to be Glossop North End they could get the results even when playing poor and that’s a sign of a good team. Favourite ground that you have played at? If you were to play in a 5 a side team with any 4 players of your choice, past or present, who would you pick and why?

INTRODUCING

NEW MILLS AFC… Everything you need to know about today’s visitors This afternoon we welcome New Mills to The Royal British Legion Stadium. The two sides last met on the 1st October in the Macron Cup, in the first meeting since the FA Cup game back in 2014. However, since knocking Gate out, they went on to lose to First Division side Silsden, 8-2 in the 2nd round. New Mills haven’t quite had the start they were hoping for after relegation from the Evo Stick 1st Division last season with 3 points, having not won a game all season. They currently sit in the bottom 3 and come into today’s game on the back of a 4-3 defeat to Barnton. With games against 1874, Runcorn Linnets, Atherton Colls, and West Didsbury as well as crucial games with AFC Darwen and Nelson coming up in the next couple of months.

THE BOSS: Daniel Douglas - Pringle Former Manchester City and Bury trainee, celebrated his return from Hyde in style by scoring 5 times against Garforth Town in mid November 2012. Daniel has recently stepped up to the managerial role at New Mills after the recent departure of Garry Brown who stepped down from his duty in September. Douglas Pringle will know the task ahead of him for the rest of the campaign as he takes on a similar role to that of Danny Penswick at Squires Gate as player manager. He will know exactly what his players are capable of and how to get the best out of their abilities which will be key to the Millers surviving in the Premier Division. If the gaffer names himself for today’s game then he could also be a potential threat to Gate, he has an eye for goal and has been key to New Mills’ attack in previous seasons. As well as scoring goals, he has been able to create chances for his team mates and also for himself.

Having lost 6-1 away to New Mills back in August, Steve Lloyd's men got their revenge with a dominant performance, which saw them extend their unbeaten run in the league to five games. A quiet first half saw the Villagers control the game limiting their visitors to just the one chance which Matt Conkie was more than equal to. Jason McShane had the first opportunity for the home side but his effort was kept out by the New Mills keeper Aaron Gibbs. Shortly after Smith opened the scoring, he picked up the ball outside the box and went on his own before his powerful shot left Gibbs with no chance.

Sam Houghton fired over shortly after the first goal and Smith almost got his and Barnton's second of the game just before half time but was denied by a terrific save from Gibbs. The second half saw the Villagers dominate for long periods but were unable to kill the game off, first of all Ryan Malone had an appeal for a penalty turned down and was duly shown a yellow card, shortly after Smith went close but was once again denied by Gibbs. Barnton kept knocking at the door and Malone and Smith had further chances to make it a lot more comfortable, but were both unable to get the second. The best chance of the second half fell to winger Jonny Jones who fired over when he found himself through on goal, and Smith fired over from a header after great work from Houghton. Despite sitting in for long periods of the game, New Mills did offer a threat on the break but they were unable to really make Conkie work. As the game came to a close Barnton were still the only team who carried a genuine goal threat and were comfortably the better team and deserved the win.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END

BEN STANTON

In our regular feature, we ask away fans to give us an insight into their expectations for the season, about their time watching their club and some general football questions. This week, New Mills fan Ben Stanton tells us what he expects to see at Church Lane this season and which 3 Premier League players he would bring in on a free transfer.

After being relegated from the Evo Stick last season, what were your expectations for this season? How do you think you’ve coped so far? Going into the season I was hoping for a top 10 finish, which at the moment isn’t looking too hopeful. So now it is just a case of avoiding relegation. But with half the season left you never know what could happen. What improvements do you think need to be made if you are to be challenging for promotion in the upcoming seasons? Last season was very disappointing and I don’t think anyone expected it to end up like it did. Q&A New Mills captain Ryan Hopper talks to us about life at Church Lane, his footballing idol, the best goal he has ever scored and his football career in general. What encouraged you to start playing football? Which players inspired you as a kid?

to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against?

My dad encouraged me to get into football as he was passionate about the game and pushed me to work hard and improve. As a young lad I looked up to Paul Scholes as an example as he was one of the best midfielders in the game and his passing ability and awareness was second to none.

Manchester United as I am a red, or my former club Accrington Stanley.

What is your first ever memory of playing football? Do you remember the first game you played in? Or the first goal you ever scored? First memory of football is playing for Medlock Rangers, a local side in Manchester at 6 years old, we had a great side where 4 out of the 6 got scouted for pro club. I remember my first goal I scored, I played a one two with my best mate Joe Rothwell who now plays for Oxford United and hit it first time into the bottom left corner and ran away celebrating.

After relegation from the evo stick last season, how different would you say the games are to higher divisions? What’s your mentality going into games? I think the standard of the evo stick is higher but not much different. The top teams in this league could be in the evo stick and compete. My preparations will never change going into any game, you have to be professional and look after yourself and prepare right. Do you remember your first ever game and goal for New Mills? What season did you join?

Would be my full debut at Accrington at Torquay as it is a great memory of mine and a great atmosphere. If you were to play in a 5 a side team with any 4 players of your choice, past or present, who would you pick and why? P Schmeichel, Scholes, Messi and Ronaldo. What was the first shirt you ever owned? Did you have a name on the back of your shirts? Manchester United shirt with my name on the back and went through the stage of having Beckham on the back. If you could bring 3 PL players to on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? John Stones, footballing centre half who plays the right way.

I joined in 2013. My first game was against RamsEden Hazard, skilled left winger with great qualibottom away. ty will produce and provide goals. vs Wanderers, of course! Plus many at Step 10 & 11 too. Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what grounds would you be wanting to visit? A couple down at regional level in Spain: Atletico Benamiel vs Athletic Fuengirola & U.D. Arsenal vs Real Mallorca ‘B’. Both were in pre season, but the first was forsome sort of cup. In the future, I’d like to visit the major European grounds i.e. Camp Nou, Bernabeu, San Siro. You know, the standard ones. Have you ever witnessed any memorable or historic moments for a team? (cup wins, play off wins, etc)? A fair few! I watched Trafford home & away up until a few years ago (when I started earning) and saw them win a few cups/promotions, as well as local league finals. I also saw Altrincham get promoted a couple of years back with the last kick of the game and, most recently, I watched Warrington Town lift the NPL Div 1 North trophy last season.

The best game that you have ever seen live? The worst game you have ever seen live? Tricky one! Best game was probably Gainsborough Trinity 5-4 Altrincham It had everything, including the Alty assistant getting sent off for running on the pitch and placing the ball down for a Trinity goal-kick. Last season's Manchester Utd-Arsenal (the one where LVG fell over) was decent too.

I did see a chip from halfway in an amateur reserve game at the end of last season, though, so I'd probably say that. There may be better ones but I can't remember most goals I see, for one reason or another.

HISTORIC PREMIER LEAGUE RESULTS

NOVEMBER

We take a look back in Premier League history at so

2002

MAN CITY 3 MAN UNITED 1

Gary Neville was rarely a man to give pleasure to opposition fans, but perhaps the biggest exception was the last top flight derby at Maine Road. Under pressure from City’s Shaun Goater, the United captain scuffed a pass which was snaffled up by the cult Bermudian to put Kevin Keegan’s side back in front. Ironic home cheers greeted every Neville touch thereafter until his substitution on the hour. By which time Goater had made it 3-1 in a boisterous match which had started with Nicolas Anelka and Ole Gunnar Soleskjaer swapping goals in the opening8 minutes. But - with respect to Goater - the match will forever be remembered for the visiting captain, whose name was sung loud and long by the City fans.

EVERTON 3 LIVERPOOL 3

2013

Up to this point the Merseyside derby had mostly been remembered as a 'friendly' one - albeit with the most red cards in Premier League history. This, though, blew all of that out the water. In a game where both sides were reeled in from holding the lead, this classic showdown at Goodison Park was remembered for all the right reasons. Philippe Coutinho took advantage of some slack corner defending to jab home an opener inside five minutes, but Everton hit back three minutes later when Kevin Mirallas larruped home a knockdown inside the box. The Reds were ahead again midway through the first half via Luis Suarez's brilliant 25-yard free-kick - his ninth goal in seven games after returning from a 10-game biting ban That's how it remained until the 72nd minute, in fact, when the hosts restored parity through Romelu Lukaku's well-placed sidefoot. Ten minutes later the Chelsea loanee had done it again, this time thumping home a header from Mirallas' corner to put Everton ahead for the first time. But the Toffees would be denied a famous win over their city rivals at the death. Daniel Sturridge had netted in eight of Liverpool's first 11 games of the season, and the England man was there again when

2009 The second half of this fixture was surely the most one sided in Premier League history, as Spurs shredded hapless Wigan and walloped in eight. Jermain Defoe, meanwhile, became the 3rd player in Premier League history to score five goals in one game, including a breath taking seven minute hat trick. A Peter Crouch header was all that separated the teams at the interval, before Defoe stepped up to the plate. Paul Scharner got Wigan’s consolation, but with Aaron Lennon pulling the strings, Spurs romped to victory. Lennon, Bentley and Niko Kranjcar grabbed the other goals as Wigan Capitulated, with left back Erik Edman particularly culpable for their demise and the Latics refunded their travelling fans. Mario Melchiot admitting: “We fell that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters.”

A result Wigan fans will want to forget but all credit to those fans who went and stayed until the final whistle.

LAST SEASON

RUNCORN TOWN 5 SQUIRES GATE 0 Gate could have gone ahead early on through Billy McKenna. After good work on the left Rowley sent the ball into the middle of the box but McKenna connected with the ball but saw the shot saved. Gate would be made to rue their chance, as their hosts would open the scoring. Poor defending from the corner allowed Marvin Molyneux to nip in at the back post from nothing more than a yard out to open the scoring. Town went on to control the game and found the net again 10 minutes later. Rob Ablewhite pouncing on lethargic defending to slot the ball past Fletcher in net. The two goals were enough to wake Gate up and motivate them to move up a gear and start playing their football. But the same defensive laziness would rear its head again after a good spell from Gate. Town captain Paul Shanley beating his man with ease before moving the ball onto his stronger foot and putting the home side 3-0 up. One positive for Gate was there desire to play out of defence and keep possession of the ball. But Gate was almost made to pay when playing at the back Abblewhite nicked the ball whilst pressing but Fletcher saved well after coming off his line. Runcorn would pile on the misery for Gate with the last kick of the first half. Captain Paul Shanley again finding space coming in off the wing to find the back of the net. After collecting their thoughts and re grouping at half time Gate went on to have a dominant second half. Gate collectively as a team kept the ball a lot better seeing large spells of domination. But still the Blackpool side couldn’t find a cutting edge to score there way back into the game. A nice move was building from the back and moving Gate up the field. Debutant Stayte laid the ball of to Buchan who in turn found Rowley but his shot fell wide of the post. The returning Josh Kay had the next chance as Gate began to grow in the game but his shot could on find the netting above the crossbar not below. Sub Aaron Clarke nearly opened his account for the club after picking up the rebound from Ferguson’s shot Clarkes shot went over the bar. Gate’s last chance of the game was probably there best of the game. Billy McKenna lining up his free kick looked destined to beat the keeper, only for Lever to quickly adjust his feet and make the save. Runcorn would condemn Gate to there heaviest defeat so far this season as sub Stephen Milne would best Fletcher to make it five.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY In our regular feature, we take a look back on this week in football history. `

1934

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE PENALTY SHOOTOUTS

On 18 November 1934, Nacional and Peñarol finally decided the Uruguayan Championship for the previous season, six months after their first playoff. The teams had finished the 1933 season tied for first in the table, so they met for a playoff on 27 May 1934 at the Estadio Centenario. In the 70th minute, with the match scoreless, a shot taken by a Peñarol player went out of bounds, but hit a medicine cabinet and rebounded back onto the pitch. The referee, Telésforo Rodríguez, failed to stop play and Nacional took possession, driving up the field and getting a goal from Héctor Castro. Peñarol immediately protested the goal and assaulted Rodríguez, resulting in his departure from the game due to injury and the ejection of three Peñarol players Approximately a month later, the league officially disallowed Castro's goal and instructed the two teams to play the last 20 minutes of the match behind closed doors on 25 August. But despite two extra-time periods, the match finished 0-0. They met for a 2nd playoff on 2 September, but again neither team managed to score. That forced a third playoff, played on 18 November, when they finally managed to find the net. Peñarol were leading 1-0 at the break after a goal from Braulio Castro (42'), but Héctor Castro's 2nd half hat-trick proved decisive and the match finished as a 2-3 Nacional victory (Peñarol's other goal came from Juan Pedro Arremón in the 58th minute)

PETER SHILTON STARTS HIS RECORD RUN

1970

On 25 November 1970, England beat East Germany 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium. It was the debut for goalkeeper Peter Shilton who went on to become England's all-time appearances leader. The 21-year old Shilton was a star for Leicester City, where he had displaced England World Cup-winning keeper Gordon Banks three years earlier. His performances for Leicester impressed Sir Alf Ramsey, who called him up for the match against East Germany. He delivered a strong performance, surrendering only a 27th-minute goal to Eberhard Vogel, the 1969 East German Player of the Year. England, meanwhile, got goals from Francis Lee (12'), Martin Peters (21'), and Allan Clarke (63') en route to a comfortable win.

Injuries from a car accident ended Banks' career in 1972, with Shilton battling Liverpool keeper Ray Clemence to become the new England number one. The two split time for the next decade, though Shilton got the lion's share of appearances. By the time he retired in 1990, he had accumulated a total of 125, blowing past the previous record of 108 set by Bobby Moore.

1915

CELTIC SET RECORD OF 62 GAMES UNBEATEN

ThOn 20 November 1915, a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock started an unbeaten run for Celtic that lasted a British record 62 matches. Celtic, who had won the two previous league titles in 1914 and 1915, had gotten the new season of to a great start, jumping straight to the top of the table on the first day with a 3-1 victory over Motherwell. By mid-November, they were even on points at the top with Hearts and Rangers, but had lost three of the last four matches, with the most recent stumble coming against Hearts on 13 November. One week later, they hosted Kilmarnock and won 2-0, thanks to goals from left back Joseph Dodds and center forward James McColl. They then proceeded to go unbeaten for the rest of the season, winning 23 and drawing three, to claim their third consecutive league title. They almost made it through the next season unbeaten as well, but finally fell to Kilmarnock at home, 0-2, on the penultimate day (though they still finished on top of the table for their fourth consecutive league title). The 62-match unbeaten run (with 49 wins and only 13 draws) remains a British record.
