FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK Good afternoon everyone,

Today we welcome New Mills to Squires Gate as we embark on this years league cup adventure. Whilst it may not have the romance of the FA Cup or the Vase, it’s still an important competition and one I want to progress in. I would like to like to welcome the New Mills committee, players and supporters to The Royal British Legion Stadium and I hope you have a safe journey home.

Results and performances during September have slipped slightly and I’m looking for a marked improvement as we start October. Last week’s defeat to Maine Road was embarrassing to say the least but I’m confident that we can turn it round quickly.

The games have come thick and fast so far for us this season and I feel the midweek break was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and go again. We now have a fully fit squad to choose from and recent additions have strengthened us in key areas which is promising.

New Mills have struggled to hit the ground running this season, with only 3 wins this season but when it comes to cup competitions, we all know that it means nothing. They beat Shirebrook Town 1-0 in the Derbyshire Cup 1st Round in the midweek so they will have some confidence to get another win here today. We will need to start the game positively, they are no pushovers.

Let’s hope it’s another cracker.

Up the Gate

Danny

Gate dominated a lot of the first half testing the visitors keeper several times but just couldn't find the key shot to give them the lead.Gate early chances from a Freekick only just cleared by the visitors before Ryan Stayte rushed his shot and missed the ball. Mark Buchan could have then put Gate ahead on 14 minutes but his header from a lovely Richards cross, fell wide of the post. The visitors had a couple of their own half chances but Gate did well to block several shots before a corner was taken short and fired just wide. Gate ended the half with two good chances. FirstPaul Carroll fired over from the edge of the box after a clearance came to him. Then Ryan Rileynarrowly fired over the bar from a Freekick just outside the box. The second was a complete contrast from the first. The visitors would take the lead after two minutes. Harry Thompson weaving his way through the defence unchallenged to slot past Speight and give them the lead. Five minutes into the second half and they'd strike again. Carroll conceding what looked to be a soft foul outside of the box. Andy Hill stepped up and scored the Freekick to Speights right. After the game manager Danny Penswick described it as a 20 minute spell of madness as Gate would concede again. After being on top for so long in the first half Barlick would score again on 72 minutes. A weak back pass was seized upon by striker Mark Threlfall who broke clear and slotted past Speight. Clearly this sparked something in Gate who returned to what we saw in the first half. Returning striker Ric Seear would be the hero with two superb individual goals. The first came when a ball forward was taken down by Seear. He battled past a defender before chipping the ball over the keeper into the far corner. Two minutes later Seear would do it again. This time straight down the middle. The ball found Seear who saw the keeper rushing off his line and chipped him to give Gate a glimmer of hope late on. But despite two late chances for Gate from corners, the first featuring a superb low save from the keeper, Gate couldn't find another goal.

LAST TIME OUT

NEW MILLS 3 RADFORD 4 SATURDAY 27TH SEPETMBER 2016 / CHURCH LANE / FA VASE 2ND QUALIFYING ROIUND Two away league games have come and gone so now it’s time for the Millers to play at Church Lane with a FA Vase match against East Midlands league side Radford on Saturday. Paul Williams, Daniel DouglasPringle and James Kinsey taking over for their first game in charge. Last time out we travelled to Abbey Hey on Tuesday night and came away with a 1-1 draw after Dylan Stringer-Moth scored after coming off the bench. The management trio of Paul, Daniel & James will have been pleased with the second half performance against Abbey Hey will try to take the positives from the game into this weekend’s game. Our visitors play in the East Midlands Counties Premier Division and sit in 13th after playing 9 games so far this season. Connor Carter has netted 7 goals for our opposition and is just one of a number of goal scoring threats at Radford’s disposal. Radford’s last game was away at Holwell Sports and they came away with a 1-1 draw. Radford beat Belper United 1-0 to reach this stage of the FA Vase.

OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks include former Fleetwood player Oliver Martin who has also had a spell in Sweden. Richard Anane who has experience at this level will also be a threat to Gate, he’s a good defensive midfield type of player who can get forward when needed to.

OLIVER MARTIN

RICHARD ANANE

HAYDN FOULDS

The former Fleetwood, Stalybridge Celtic and Man City goalkeeper signed for New Mills in 2015 after a spell in Sweden.

Can play either at right back or in midfield, Anane has played at this level previously with Stockport Sports and Barnton.

Likely to lead the line today, Foulds is in good form for New Mills.

Highly rated at his previous clubs, Martin has made 14 appearances so far this season.

Dangerous getting forward from defence and quick to get back when needed. He possesses a good cross and will no doubt be a threat.

Garry Brown has been up the club for a few year and after last season where they got move down the leagues. Garry will be looking to improve and get new mills back up to the Evo stick as quick as possible.

Garry know this is one of hardest league to come out off so he know now game will be easy and he also know it is very hard to gain promoted with only team going up each year.

Formerly of Oldham Athletic and Salford, Foulds is top goalscorer with 7 goals in 13 games.

Formed almost 120 years ago, New Mills quickly progressed through the local leagues in its early days and even had a spell in the Manchester League. However, the club disbanded and a new team was formed, New Mills St Georges, which in a period up to World War I, won a number of titles, including the Derbyshire Minor Cup. In 1919 the club began playing again and dropped the St Georges from its name. It joined the Manchester League once again and finished top in 1924 and, after finishing as runner-up the following season, lifted the championship once again in 1926. As well as winning the league, New Mills also won the Derbyshire Cup three seasons out of four. The club was extremely well supported and had regular gates of around 3000. This was a very successful few seasons for the club, and at least half a dozen players moved on to clubs in the Football League. The club was once again disbanded due to World War II but reformed again afterwards, this time entering the Manchester Amateur League before progressing once again to the Manchester League, taking the title in 1956. In 1959, Joe Martin took charge as manager, which started a great run of success for the club, winning the league seven times together with plenty of trophies before he retired in 1972

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY…. In our regular feature, we take a look back at the past week in football history from all around the world.

FINNEY FINALLY MAKES A MOVE

1963

On 25th September 1963, English centre forward Tom Finney who had spent all 14 seasons of his professional career at Preston North End, came out of retirement. For another club. One of the most dominant players of the era, Finney signed with Preston, his hometown club, shortly before the outbreak of World War II. But the suspension of football during the conflict meant that he did not make his debut for them until 1946. He was a standout for an otherwise largely unimpressive side, winning footballer of the year award in 1953-54 and in 1956-57. He scored a total of 210 goals in 473 appearances. In 1963, George Eastham, the manager of defending Irish League champions Distillery FC asked the then 41 year old Finney to play for them in a European Cup tie against Benfica who had won the competition in 1961 and 1962. After convincing Finney that the offer was legitimate, the forward agreed to suit up for the Northern Irish club for the first home leg.

1988

REAL WIN THEIR FIRST SUPERCOPA

On 29th September 1988, Real Madrid won their first Supercopa, despite losing to Barcelona 2-1. It was the last major trophy that Real had yet to win, though they did win the tournament’s predecessor, the Copa Eva. When the Supercopa started in 1982, Real Madrid, as Copa del Rey winners, played La Liga champions Real Sociedad, but lost 1-4 on aggregate. When Real Madrid next qualified by winning the league in 1986 and 1987, the competition was not held in either year. In 1988, they won the league for a third straight time, setting up a Supercopa meeting against Copa del Rey champions Barcelona. They got off to a great start, winning the first leg 2-0 at the Bernabéu with late goals from Míchel (71') and Hugo Sánchez (78'). That carried over into the second leg on 29 September, played at Camp Nou, when striker Emilio Butragueño put them up 0-1 in the 14th minute. That proved to be the decisive goal, as Barcelona midfielder José Mari Bakero netted a brace (37', 77') to bring the aggregate score to 3-2. That's how it ended, with Madrid taking the honors. Since then, they've gone on to win it a total of nine times, including 1989, when they won it automatically as winners of both the Copa del Rey and the league.

1879

FIRST MIDLANDS DERBY

On 27 September 1879, Birmingham City hosted the first Birmingham derby, beating Aston Villa by the score of 1-0.

Since then, Villa has gotten the better of their crosstown rivals, winning the greater share of the teams' 120 meetings. For that first match, Birmingham were still going by their original name, Small Heath Alliance (pictured). The contest was played at their Muntz Street ground, which drew heavy criticism for Villa players as being "only suitable for pot-holing." The first competitive match in the derby came in the FA Cup in 1887, with Villa taking a 2-1 victory. Out of their 120 total matches, 52 have gone to Villa and 38 to Birmingham City, with 31 draws. The derby's top scorer is Villa's Billy Walker, who found the net 11 times between 1919 and 1934. City's top scorer is Joe Bradford, with 8 goals from 1920 to 1935. Several players have switched teams over the years, including a few who moved directly from one team to the other. The highest profile switch came in 1986, when Villa great Dennis Mortimer (who won the European Cup with Villa in 1982) joined Birmingham after a season at Brighton & Hove Albion. Managers have also made the crosstown move, starting in 1982 when Villa manager Ron Saunders joined Birmingham. In 2011, manager Alex McLeish left Birmingham for Aston

NEW MILLS 2 SQUIRES GATE 3 SATURDAY 30TH AUGUST 2014 Squires Gate travelled to Evo-Stick North side New Mills AFC on the back of a poor display against Ashton Athletic on Tuesday night. Gate made two changes to the side from Tuesday night with Billy McKenna returning from injury and Brett Ferguson in the starting line up. Gate looked great from the kick-off as both sides jostled for possession, from Gate an early corner just missing Josh Westwood's head. Gate could have gone ahead with 15 minutes off the start, butBilly McKenna could only find the post which cruelly went out into safety. Later the home side appealed for a penalty but was turned down by the referee after the New Mills striker fell in the box. Gate continued to attack and had a chance to open the scoring, when Jack Sowerby, jinking past two men before poking his shot just wide of the post. as the game wore on Gate who looked the brighter of the two sides were looking the more likely to score. Billy McKenna, who was troubling the home defence having a clear cut shot on 20 minutes which was blocked by the host’s solid defence and the ball was eventually cleared away to safety. Gate should have felt aggrieved not to be ahead having both the better chances and more of the ball. The home side opened the scoring though a ball floated in to the back post to be headed past Ben Fletcher, but the goal shouldn't really have stood netted by Mike Smith, when on 33 minutes with at least three New Mills players all clearly offside. The home side bossed proceedings at times most of the early stages of the first half, but Gate held and stood tall to prevent further setbacks. Gate who looked to fight back after half time, Jack Sowerby involved in a good build up, play with Jack Cook but leading striker’s shot went sailing just over the bar. Unfortunately for the visitors New Mills doubled their lead, when in the 55th minute, Wes Bancroft picked up the ball and curled it into the back of the net. Gate almost got a goal back within a few minutes when the returningBilly McKenna crossed the ball which almost caught the keeper out, but the ball floated straight under the crossbar and out for a throw. Gate applying constant pressure on the home side’s goalmouth started to ping in chances, Josh Westwood up from the back latched onto a cross with a bullet header that left the home keeper flat footed and helpless to connect and found the back of the net, to bring Gate back in with a chance in the game. Gate were in control and mounted a wave of attacks and after Sowerby and sub Ryan Riley worked some magic set pieces eventually led to a cleverly placed snap shot from Sowerby, but was sent just over the bar. As time wore on, Gate again were piling on the pressure, a loose ball from the home defence found the feet of Jake Forshaw who couldn't have struck the ball any sweeter, his drive found the bottom corner to equalise for the away side. Gate now looking full of confidence were all over the home side, a ball forward from the impressive Anderson in defence found makeshift striker Josh Westwood whose shot fell just wide of the post. Step forward Sam Dickinson who late on, the youngest member of the squad at 18, and a waiter by day, found the ball at the edge of the box to rifle the ball home to win the game late on for Squires Gate

BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 11.10.16 WHO’S IN CHARGE? Stewart GROUND Silentnight Stadium LAST SEASON

BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 Gate made a good start to the game and had the chance to score early on, Wes Benjamin driving forward through midfield played the ball of to Ash Rowley but his shot was saved easily by the keeper. The returning Mark Buchanshowed good strength soon after to hold of his defender and turn him but the shot was agin saved by the goal keeper. Another returning player Alex Colquhoun found the feet of Rowley, he turned his man and found the run of Buchan but he couldn’t latch onto the pass. The home sides first opportunity of the game came after 11 minutes Barlicks winger having a shot from outside the box only to see it hit the crossbar. The homeside’s next chance would be the opening goal. Barlicks right back allowed time to come forward before playing a scuffed pass forward and Barlicks striker slotted past Fletcher to put the home side in the lead. Poor defending from Squires Gate meant the home sides winger found enough space to score at the back post from a tight angle. Gates heads seem to drop after conceding to quick fire goals but it’s far to say that Gate were the better team throughout the first half despite the scoreline. Captain Danny Penswick was trying to lead Gate after the re start and picked up the ball in midfield but his pass through to Buchan was just a little to hard for Buchan to latch on to. Gate went into half time and should have felt aggrieved gate were the much better team with the home side only really having created the two goals. Barnoldswick keeper made 3 terrific saves in the first half to keep Gate out and keep the home side in the lead. The second half was much of the same for Gate who bossed the game but just couldn’t find that bit of luck up front to make the break through. Wes Benjamin made another surging run forward from midfield but again the home side keeper came to the rescue to catch Benjamin's cross before it could find a gate man. Terry Cummigs had the chance the create something for Gate after a superb cross field ball from Richards at right back Cummings bight the ball down with a superb touch and cut inside but his shot was tipped over by the keeper. From the resulting corner Josh Westwood was picked out but his header was again saved by the keeper. Gate tried to break the home side down and get a goal back but barnoldswick stood firm and defend the 2-0 lead. And the home side had the chance to make it 3 late on when they hit Gate on the counter but the shot cannoned of the post, They would make it 3 soon after that, more poor defending from a corner allowed the home side to easily make it 3.
