FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK “GATE FANS WILL REMEMBER FONDLY HARRY DUNN AND ALEX MURPHY...” Good evening everyone, Tonight we welcome Padiham to the RBL Stadium as we look to cement our good start to the season. I’d like to welcome the committee fans and players and wish you a safe journey home. Saturday was pretty disappointing on our part as I hoped we would be able to progress far in the competition but credit to Alsager, they gave us a fantastic match and obviously wanted it more on the day. They’ve always been a tough team to face and I’m sure they will bounce back to the Premier Division in no time. We realised where we had went wrong and now we are working hard to regroup and go again tonight.

“We realised where we went wrong and we are working hard to regroup and go again tonight.” Padiham have been on a poor run recently but with the talent in their squad that should change soon. Gate fans will remember fondly Alex Murphy and Harry Dunn from a few seasons ago. They will both be involved for Padiham so let's hope they both have a quiet evening. Padiham have themselves two quality players there who both know the league well.

“With the talent in their squad that should change soon.” Three wins out of four at home in the league is the kind of start we all wanted and I'm hoping that to continue tonight with some tough games coming up for us in a short space of time. In terms of squad depth, we welcome back Dawson, Buchan and Thornber to the squad which will add strength and depth. Let's hope it's another goal feast and we can again come out on the right end of it.

“We welcome back Dawson, Buchan and Thornber” Up the Gate

Danny

(J.GIBSON 79) M.BUCHAN 10 10 DALE B.DAWSON 11 11 TOWNSEND Nelson looked quick early on with Gate needing to be on their toes to defend after a couple of minutes. Gate themselves played some nice stuff up top with last season top scorer Mark Buchan making his first start of the season, linking up well with Ric Seear and Brett Dawson. The three all he chances in the first five minutes but none could find the break through with the best chance coming from Ric Seear after Brett Dawson laid the ball off to him outside the box but he fired over. Gate had to be alert 20 minutes in when a testing ball came into the box, but Richards did well at the back post to hook the ball over the bar. An equally good chance came for Gate down the other end with pinball in the box. Both Ric Seear and Mark Thornber having shots blocked with Nelson eventually clearing the ball. Soon after Gate would open the lead. Gate winning a penalty right in the sideline after a foul on Dawson. Manager Danny Penswick stepped up to deliver a lovely ball to find the head of Alex Mckendrick to head home his first of the season. Gate like in previous games were undone by two quick fire goals. First Nelson countered as Gate attacked and fired a ball to the back post for an easy tap in. Then a minute before half time the referee awarded a penalty for handball which was put away to out Nelson in the lead going into half time. The second half saw Gate conceded another penalty seven minutes into half time. Ben Fletcher closing down the striker towards the edge of the box and bought him down. Zack Dale scored his second penalty of the game to put Nelson further in front. Gate wouldn't let the goal down them and grabbed a goal back on 62 minutes. Ric Seear heading towards goal with the ball slipping through the keepers hands. Gate would get a penalty of their own on 66 minutes. Ric Seear getting fouled in the box with Mark Buchan stepping up to score the spot kick. The returning Buchan would hit his second of the game on 77 minutes. A corner into the box fell to the feet of the Scotsman who took a touch a fired into the roof of the net to win the game for Gate!

M LENNON 10 10 R.TANSER J GLOVER 11 11 J.HIGAM (B.MCKENNA 63) Gates first chance of the game came after four minutes when the pacey Tanser was sent clear down the left hand side. He squared the ball to Alex Mckendrick in the box, but his turn and shot was easily saved. Ryan Tanser then had a chance of his own as he was sent in behind again but he was all alone and dragged his shot wide. Gate did well to defend an Alsager freekick on fourteen minutes. Alsager were a tall physical side and offered a threat from set pieces throughout the day. Manager Danny Penswick cleared the ball before Mckendrick completed the job. Gate again found themselves in behind the Alsager backline on fifteen minutes but Ryan Riley's cross was too hard to find strike partner Tanser. Gate would be made to pay for their early misses on seventeen minutes. Gate's clearance came back of an Alsager player and took a lucky bounce into the path of Josh Glover who scored low past Fletcher. Gate had calls for a penalty waved away on 35 minutes for a foul in the box. The linesman flagged for what looked like an easy decision but instead indicated a freekick, nowhere near where the foul happened. The freekick was easily cleared by the home side. Gates best chances came at the end of the half. First Ryan Tanser skimmed the crossbar after he found his way through. Then three minutes later Alex Mckendrick was a whisper away from heading his second goal in two games but couldn't get a strong enough touch. The second half was much the same for Gate who had plenty of chances and again dominated the game. Jamie Gibson did well to keep the ball in on the right hand side after five minutes but the cross towards Ryan Tanser was easily gathered by the keeper. Ben Fletcher's only save of the second half came on 59 minutes. What looked like a brilliant save was actually fairly routine as Fletcher dived late to smother the bobbling shot. Gate would finally find the break through on 72 minutes. Paul Carroll taking the quick free kick after a found Mike Hall, he played the ball into the path of Ryan Riley who did well to bring the ball down and rifle a shot into the top corner. The game would only be level for seven minutes. Another deflection fell into the path of Taylor Attrell who finished under Ben Fletcher to give Alsager the lead. Gate had a last chance in the 90th minute to salvage something from the game but that was fired over from the edge of the box. Report by Mark Ashmore

LAST SEASON

NELSON 1 SQUIRES GATE 3 The game started with no real rhythm and saw a lot of free kicks and throwins early on. The first real chance of the game fell to the home side but their right winger fired over from outside the box. Gates first chance fell to Billy McKenna from the corner but he was tackled before he could get in his stride. Gate could have opened the scoring after 13 minutes but Josh Westwoods header was cleared off the line. Gate had several chances to counter from Nelson attacks but first McKenna then Noblet struggled to get shots away. Nat Taylor had Nelsons best chance of the first half when he fired a shot towards goal after Stayte lost sight of the ball. Brett Ferguson had the last chance of the half when he drifted inside from the wing but his shot was well over.

The second half couldn't have started better for Gate who opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Nelson giving the ball away at the back aloud Joe Noblet to pick up the ball and he cooley slotted the ball past the Nelson keeper who left a lot of space on one side of the goal. The home sides heads seemed to drop and Gate would again exploit poor defending.Ryan Tanser picking up the loose ball to use his pace and beat the last defender and fire low past the keeper. Gates quick fire double would soon become a triple when 6 minutes later they added yet another. The home side caught short at the back again and in a 3 on 1 situation Noblet crossed the ball across the face of goal and Ferguson got to the ball first to tackle the ball into the net. It was a nervy last 30 minutes for Gate when Nelson got a goal back. Poor defending from the corner aloud the Nelson man to meet the ball first and head home. Billy McKenna had a great chance to score a superb goal with 10 minutes left of the game. He jinked and turned his way past 3 men but the end product was lacking and his shot went wide of the post. Nelson could have made it a nervy finish late on when they won the ball back from Gates through in. They burst forward in numbers but the substitute Morrison fired over the crossbar.

When the club was formed in 1878 it was among the first football clubs in Lancashire and was well sup ported, attracting an attendance of 9,000 for a match against neighbours Burnley in 1884.At this time Padiham's ground was on the banks of the River Calder, hence the nickname, The Caldersiders. Then in 1949 the club was resurrected with the opening of the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground. A crowd of 1,777 turned up to see their opening fixture of the season in the Lancashire Combination Football League. They became founder members of the North West Counties Football League in 1982 but left the league in 1990. They returned in 2000 after spending £500,000 on upgrading the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground and finished in the top four of the second division in 2003 and 2005. They gained promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One North for season 2013/14 after winning the North West Counties Football League Premier Division in season 2012/13, but returned to the North West Counties League after being relegated two seasons later.

GATE RAN OUT WINNERS WITH SOME IMPRESSIVE FIRST HALF FOOTBALL SQUIRES GATE 3 SILSDEN 2 SATURDAY 14TH SEPETMBER 2013 REPORT BY MARK ASHMORE

With just 60 seconds on the clock, and Squires Gate resumed where they left off last Saturday at Maltby Main, when Jack Sowerby's mazy run, ended with a shot from 25 yards just flying inches over the bar, and the confidence gained last week was evident as they tore into the visitors. The home fans didn't have to wait long before it produced results, and on 10 mins. it was again Jack Sowerby on the spot to side foot a pass from Ben Fishwick, giving keeper Edward Hall no chance, and put the home side into a deserved lead. Then three mins later he doubled his and Gate's goal tally when he ran through the defence firing a shot past the keeper on 13 mins. The running and passing of a Gate side with a handful of team changes from when they played their last home game, going down to Wigan Robin Park, was a revelation as to the pace and skill of this young side, restricting the visitors to very few opportunities. While their keeper was kept busy, and made a great save from Ben Fishwick back after injury, when Ben hit a 'pile driver' from a corner kick, and Edward Hall brought off a great save turning the ball round the post. But as often happens, while Gate were going forward the visitors got the chance to pull a goal back when Michael Hall's pass found Nathan Egan, who gave Ben Fletcher no chance as he drove the shot past him into the bottom corner, on the stroke of half time, sending them into the dressing room feeling they were in with a chance. When the game resumed it was Silsden who were on the acendecy, and a fine save by Ben Fletcher, and the visitors efforts were rewarded when from the resulting corner, Stephan Throup, ran through to score smashing the ball into the net on the 62 min. This lifted the game with the pace taking it's toll on some of the players, and both teams brought on fresh legs to try to snatch the all important winner, and it was Gate who retook the lead, on 67 mins.with what turned out to be the match winner.. It was a goalmouth scramble with several shots being blocked on the line, but the home side was unable to clear, and a shot from Ben Jakes, was adjudged to have crossed the line by the Referee's assistant, who was in the best position to judge. Silsden fought on till the end, and Ben Fletcher came to the rescue in the closing mins, when he tipped wide a shot from, Anthony Young, This was Gate's second victory, and lifts them two place up the table. Manager Dave McCann, said after the game, "We made hard work , getting a much needed win, in the end we deserved it pleasing that headaches with the squad. Charlie Russell, fitted in well and was effective. We are pleased for Jack Sowerby getting on scoring sheet. He added, Lydon Hodgkiss made his debut well and Adam did well at the back

WE’VE MET BEFORE? PADIHAM 0 SQUIRES GATE 1 WEDNESDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2015 Gate started the game on the front foot and showed early attacking intent. Nobody could get on the end of Richards early free kick into the box in the opening minutes of the game. Mark Buchan was next with a chance after he jinked past his defender but his shot went wide of the post. The home sides first chance of the game came when their centre back was forward from the back but his header went over the bar from the free kick. Josh Westwood had the next chance but Padiham’s keeper took the ball off Westwood’s head before he could connect with it. Josh Kay had Gates best chance after beating four men his shot was blocked by Bamba for Padiham. The home side had the last chance of the first half but Ex Gate player Alex Ralph’s shot was blocked by Westwood.Gate’s first chance of the second half came on the break but Buchan took a touch too many and the home keeper managed to scramble the ball away. Billy McKenna was in the rest place at the right time but he put the rebound wide of the post. Josh Kay had a great chance to open the scoring again but after he cut inside his shot cannoned off the inside of the post. Padiham caught Gate on the break but EX Gate player Alex Murphy was beat to the ball. 10 minutes on the home side almost scored by Richards was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line from a Fildes shot. Billy McKennafound space in behind the backline but he was closed down by the keeper who spilled the ball. The ball fell to Mark Buchan in the middle who jinked past his man and fired the ball into the back of the net with seven minutes of the game left. Gate’s last chance of the game saw them catch Padiham on the break with Penswick down the right hand side but his ball into the box was gathered by the goalkeeper. Gate held on until the final whistle to record their first

SQUIRES GATE 3

league victory of the season.

PADIHAM 2 SATURDAY31STOCTOBER 2015 The game started off at a quick pace with Gate almost taking the lead after good early pressure. Mckenna played the ball over the top of the defence to find the run of Buchan but his first time shot was saved after 7 minutes. Although the visitors were not without there own early chances they hit the inside of the post after 10 minutes after Turner broke forward down the right wing. Josh Kay was the next to take aim but after drifting inside from the wing his shot fell the wrong side of the post. The same end result happened again soon after, this time Buchan and Noblet linked up well but the latter dragged his shot wide. It would be the visitors who would open the scoring. Padiham striker Egan playing off the last man to burst forward and round Fletcher to take the lead.Billy McKenna had the chance to equalsie soon after for Gate when a deflected ball found its way through to him but his left footed shot was well saved. Mckenna was again involved soon after, clever play on the edge of Padiham’s box with the ball being fed into Buchan’s feet. He took the ball in his stride and fired Gate level on 22 minutes. More clever passing from Gate saw Joe Noblet through on goal he poked the ball past the keeper but the ball was cleared off the line before it could roll over for a goal. Padiham had a chance of there own the ball being played across the face of goal but nobody could connect with 5 minutes left of the first half. Padiham had the last chance of the half but Fletcher did well one on one to deny Egan. Gate didn’t get off to the best of starts in the second half conceding after 4 minutes. Silly mistakes in defence meant former Gate player Curtis Haley had the easy task of tapping in the ball from inside the box. Gate looked to attack the game and bought both Riley and Rowley on to get at Padiham’s defence. The change would pay off for Gate as soon after they’d equalise. Defender Nathan Trout firing home from the corner for his first goal for the club. The change would play an influential part in the outcome of the game as 9 minutes from full time, sub Ash Rowley would give Gate the lead. The ball being cut back to the edge of the box for the winger to let fly and win the game for

LAST TIME OUT

PADIHAM 1 HANLEY TOWN 5 PREMIER DIVISION / YESS ELECTRICAL ARENA / SATURDAY 1O SEPTEMBER 2016 Padiham FC's run of poor results continued on Saturday when they lost for the sixth game in a row, this time against newly promoted Hanley Town at the Arbories in the Hallmark Security North West Counties Football League.

Incredibly Padiham scored first for the third consecutive fixture when Marc Young headed in a Sam Frith 7th minute corner at the back post to give the Storks a 1-0 lead. However Padiham's advantage was short lived as five minutes later Dan Cope found himself unmarked and able to put his side back on level terms at 1-1. Michael West made visiting keeper Dane Jackson stretch full length to turn his 13th minute shot round the post in one of only a handful of chances created at either end before a mistake by Young let in Oliver Mellor five minutes before half-time to put the visitors ahead 2-1 at the break.

The second half started with Padiham on top but when James Dean had three attempts blocked in a goal mouth scramble and in a later attack shot wide with an open net, home supporters knew what the outcome would be and from the hour mark onwards, Hanley stepped up the pace, hitting the Storks cross bar with one effort before increasing their lead through Angelo Errico on 65 minutes and going 4-1 ahead on 84 minutes when Martin Stanyer headed in a free kick. Things got worse for the home side when Marc Young was sent off for retaliation and Hanley substitute Tom Ashton added a fifth for the visitors in added on time at the end of another disappointing performance by Steve Wilkes' side.
