CITY OF LIVERPOOL Cairns 17,19,55 Denson 36 Mcgrath 60
Saturday 8th September 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium //Attendance:255 Squires Gate's FA Cup journey ended at the hands of fellow Hallmark Security Premier Division side City of Liverpool. After a superb win against Droylsden on Tuesday night, confidence within the squad was high coming into this game. The same though could be said for the visitors City of Liverpool. Craig Robinson's side came into the game unbeaten in league and cup after beating Glossop North End on Tuesday night in extra time. The visitors started the game very brightly knocking the ball around with confidence, Craig Cairns had two chances in the opening ten minutes but first Ben Fletcher saved well before the second was fired over by the striker. It didn't take long for Craig Cairns to find the back of the net. The former Runcorn Town hitman who already had three goals for the season, pounced after a weak header backwards but Ben Fletcher in trouble, Cairns tapping in from the rebound. Cairns scored his second of the game two minutes later near enough straight from kickoff. The Purps won back the ball and played around Gate before the striker was on the end of the cross to steer it past Fletcher. The visitors had the ball in the net twice more but both were flagged for offside as Gate couldn't cope with the movement of the Purps attack. Gate went close from a freekick in the 32nd minute but a fine save denied Ryan Charnley. He curled his freekick around the wall but the keeper saved well before Jordan Salthouse fired over the rebound.
COLFC added a third goal as the half came to an end. A cross from deep from COLFC defender Luke Denson took a nasty bounce over Ben Fletcher who came to collect but missed the ball allowing Craig Cairns to score his third of the game.
Half time: Squires Gate 0-3 City of Liverpool It didn't take the visitors long to add another goal with Cairns again adding to his goals. A lovely through ball cuts Gate's defence apart to find the run of Cairns who made no mistake firing past Fletcher. Dean Ing came close to opening the scoring after just coming onto the pitch but the keeper came and collected Matty Kay's cross before Ing. The visitors added their fifth of the game from the penalty spot. Again Gate made it very easy and John Mcgrath fired in from the spot. Gate themselves then had a soft looking penalty but Ryan Charnley fired over from the spot. The homeside grabbed a goal back in the 74th minute when Dean Ing headed in Andrew Richards cross to get a goal back.

Tuesday 11th September 2018//The Silentnight Stadium // Attendance:103 The homeside took the lead just a minute into the game. A missed header fell to Jack Coop who made no mistake to fire low past Ben Fletcher. Ric Seear had Gate’s first chance of the game after five minutes looking for an equaliser but he fire dinto the side netting. Barnoldswick doubled their lead after eight minutes. Ben Fletcher did well to save the original shot but he was beat to the ball by James Crocran who recovered quickly to head in. Ryan Riley can forward for Gate, who started to grown into the game, on 12 minutes but he shot well over the bar. Gate grabbed a goal back a minute later through Ric Seear. The striker returning from suspension was in the right place to head in Dan Gray’s cross. Andy Clarkson’s men thought they had equalised on 24 minutes when Ben Reader headed in Adam Sumner’s corner. He was judged to have fouled the keeper in the process though. Barnoldswick went close to adding a third when first a header at the back post was put wide before Ben Fletcher was equal to a stinging shot from Zac Dale. HALF TIME: Barnoldswick 2-1 Squires Gate
Ric Seear came close to equalising for Gate just two minutes into the second half almost replicating his opening goal. He was found by Dan Gray in the box but his shot was saved for a corner. Returning midfielder Hyuga Tanner showed great skill and awareness on the edge of the box ten minutes into the second half to thread the ball through to Ryan Charnley, but the midfielders shot was saved for a corner. The homeside clearing the corner and going up the other end to fire wide. The homeside came close themselves when the left back almost scored the goal of the season. He volleyed from outside the box just wide. Hyuga Tanner came close as the game came to a close as Gate continued to pile on the pressure. He fired in from outside the box but his shot cannoned off the crossbar.

Sunday 16th September 2018/Park Road/ Attendance:102 After arriving late due to bad traffic, Gate were left with little time to warm up and get prepared for this game. Manager Andy Clarkson bought Seydou Bamba and Joey Mullen into the side that were looking to get back to winning ways after losing their last two games. Gate went close after just two minutes in the game. Ryan Charnley struck the crossbar from a freekick before Brett Dawson fired over. Joey Mullen found Dean Ing in the box after 17 minutes but the towering midfielder’s shot was saved. Mullen then had a chance of his own in a big opportunity for Gate. Ric Seear found Ryan Charnley who in turn found Joey Mullen but the midfielders low shot was saved. Gate eventually made there dominance play just before half time. Captain Matty Kay picked up a loose ball and played in Brett Dawson who made no mistake to slot the ball past the onrushing keeper. Half time: Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 0-1 Squires Gate
Brett Dawson came close to doubling his tally just after the second half started but the keeper did well to save well down low. The homeside came close to leveling the game when they got in behind Gate 3 on 1. Gate did well to recover but the shot was saved easily by Ben Fletcher. They came forward again soon after as they started to try to keep the ball but Ben Fletcher was equal with a good save. Gate had the ball in the net for a second time, but the linesman ruled the goal out for offside. As the game went on the homeside looked to push for an equaliser but couldn’t break Gate down. Whilst up looking for a last minute equaliser, Gate scored a second on the break. Brett Dawson found Ric Seear on the half way line, the striker took the ball in his stride and rolled the ball into the empty net.

Saturday 22nd September 2018//Potteries Park// Attendance:101 Gate came away from Hanley Town on Saturday afternoon without the point they deserved in an even game at the Potteries. Manager Andy Clarkson bought in Jordan O'Mahoney, Brad Jones and Dan Gray back into the side from Sunday's FA Vase win. The home team took the lead midway through the first half when their centre forward ran at Gate's defence and put his shot past a diving Ben Fletcher as Gate's defence backed off. Gate had their chances to equalise with Ric Seear hitting the bar. The home side though doubled their lead just before half time when they scored from a header from the corner, Gate again starting slowly.
Half time: Hanley Town 2-0 Squires Gate
Whatever was said at half time by Andy Clarkson clearly worked because within 30 seconds of the restart Gate were back in the game. Dean Ing scoring a superb sublime goal from outside the area. The goal inspired Gate to push forward and look for an equaliser that Andy Clarkson's depleted squad deserved. Chances for Seear, Dawson and Brad Jones just couldn't find the net as Gate missed that little bit of good luck in front of goal.

J.WILLIAMS 62 PETT 74 Monday 25th September 2017/ The Brian Addison Stadium/Att:90/ HT: 0-2
The visitors had just appointed former Preston and Manchester City striker Jon Macken as manager, this his second game in charge. The visitors started off lively with a clear intention to keep the ball, being shown. They went close after nine minutes when the number 11 clipped the post from outside the box. Jack Williams then went close for Gate down the other end but his shot was saved with Radcliffe clearing the corner. On 19 minutes Williams again had a great chance after the returning Gal Pett headed into his path. Unfortunately for Gate though, the front man fired wide. The visitors would take the lead after 21 minutes. Akik Greir firing the ball past Fletcher from the edge of the box after the ball fell to him. The Gate players had claims for a handball turned away on the 30 minute mark when Jake Higham was stopped in the box. He burst into the box with the ball seeming to be stopped by the Radcliffe man, but the referee waved away the protests. Radcliffe then showed Gates weaknesses on 36 minutes when they doubled the lead. Gate not closing down quick enough allowed Radcliffe to come from their own half to Gates box. The ball eventually found its way to the penalty spot where Brendan Glackin fired past Fletcher. Gary Pett then had Gate’s last chance of the first half from a freekick. The front man connected with the freekick but could only find the keepers arms. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 0-2 Radcliffe Gate were hampered at half time by the news that keeper Ben Fletcher had picked up a knock and was unable to continue. Up step captain and midfielder Mike Hall to take the gloves having previously done so last season in Gates win at Bootle. The visitors would start the second half the better side and added another after two minutes. Glackin again in the right place to spot past Hall after Radcliffe broke from Gates corner. Gate would grab a deserved goal back just after the hour mark. Sub Moxon’s cross finding its way to Jack Williams in the six yard box for him to fire in. Mike Hall had to be alert in goal on 67 minutes when he saved from a long range Radcliffe effort to keep Gate in the game. That save would spur Gate on to score a second on the 70 minute mark. Jordan O’Mahoney winning the ball and driving forward before chipping the ball over the defender into the path of Pett. Pett then took one touch before firing into the far side of the goal, a strike no keeper would save. From their it was all Gate for he last 20 minutes with Radcliffe pinned back in their own half and defending. Tarren Moxon has the chance to equalise for Gate late on when he curled a first time shot just wide of the post in the 84th minute. Pett then had a chance from a corner late on, but his header went over the bar! The loss means Gate exit the cup for the second year running but should be proud of their performance, especially the second half.

DIXON LAMBERT & LIAM SMITH Dixon Lambert And Liam Smith took over from long region of Steve Wilks back in early last season and done so well to keep in the division last season. This season they be hoping with more of the same but want more for the team in order to challenge for the title and they have make some changes and made a good start to the season.
HISTORY OF THE STORKS It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham`s initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 - 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 - 50 football season. In 1982, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham returned to the North West

PADIHAM TINNING 73 O’NEIL 82
Tuesday 18th September 2018/ Adie Moran Park/Att:89/ HT: 1-0
In a breath taking and richly entertaining game of football, both sides created a host of chances, such that the final score in many ways failed to reflect the game. Both teams could have easily have scored far more and the outcome in no way reflected the contribution of Padiham who could well have sewn the game up in the opening quarter. That they didn’t was down to the woodwork and the brilliance of Calum Jakovlevs who pulled off four outstanding saves to help repel an early onslaught by the Lancashire side. That the Heys keeper was arguably a contender for Man of the Match, in a game in which the winning margin was ultimately emphatic says much about the nature of this game. Heys had created the first opening of the game in the 5th minute when a Lee Grimshaw shot forced Padiham keeper Nosakhare Aghayere into a sharp low save. However, it was the visitors who took the game by the scruff of the neck. In one single passage of play they might have taken the lead on three occasions. First, a shot by Hulme hit the foot of the post and then as Heys struggled to gain possession Jakovlevs saved twice, one to his left the other to his right, to keep out further shots from Millenic Alli and Liam O’Neill. The Heys stopper then produced two more remarkable saves to keep out headers from Lee Knight, leaving the Padiham striker clutching his head in disbelief and all of this by the 11th minute of the game.It was soon to be the turn of Aghayere to excel as Heys found their feet and threatened themselves, the Padiham keeper did a great job in parrying a Danny Warburton shot but his side were grateful for a super last-ditch block by Haydock to block Grimshaw on the follow up. The Heys striker was not to be denied for long as in the 19th minute the hosts took the lead. Warburton linked with Lee Bruce down the right and when the latter crossed, Grimshaw nipped in ahead of everyone to steer home. Heys might have added to their lead five minutes later when Bruce fired wide after a great run and cross by Jake Wood. Padiham looked to respond and enjoyed the greater possession for a spell but their earlier threat was not as apparent .It was Heys who fashioned the next chance when Brad Sixsmith fired wide after a great run by Rio Wilson-Heyes. However, the half was to end as it had largely begun with Jakovlevs denying Hulme at close range to ensure a frantic forty-five minutes ended remarkably with only one goal having been scored. All that was to change in the second half as Heys took charge. By the hour Heys were three goals to the good. After a quiet start to the season, Wilson-Heyes has shown increasing signs of a return to his best form. Having gone close with a shot moments previously, he increased Heys lead in the 53rd minute with a superb solo goal. Collecting the ball in midfield he set up on a run through the heart of the Padiham defence 01 01 before rounding the keeper and slotting home his first goal of the season. Playing with confidence, Heys added a third goal seven minutes later. Confusion reigned in the Padiham penalty area and when Aghayere failed to collect, Grimshaw seized possession, turned swiftly and guided the ball home. The visitors responded, and their endeavour was rewarded in the 73rd minute when they reduced the arrears, when from a corner Jack Tinning rose to head home. Hopes of a comeback were stifled however within three minutes as Wilson-Heyes tormented the Padiham rear guard again before finding Chris Baguley who had time to steady himself before drilling a shot past Aghayere. Heys work though was still not done. In the 82nd minute Padiham pulled a goal back. Jakovlevs, blotted his copy book with an unnecessary challenge in the box giving Liam O’Neill the opportunity to score from the penalty spot. Given the nature of the game, an air of nervousness still prevailed but in the 85th minute any hopes of a comeback were truly dispelled. Michael Itela’s persistence was rewarded as he refused to give up on a ball that appeared to be going out of play, to retrieve possession and then drill a low shot across the keeper into the far corner. Chris Baguley was denied a second goal by Aghayere before in added time, when after good work by Itela, Theo Kidd marked his return to action as he slotted home Heys sixth.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid This week's NLP programme column below, written by myself. Jamie Vardy has gone on to forge a remarkable career in football from his earlier days in the lower leagues. But he is someone who has become so widely written about everyone from Land’s End to John O’Groats has come to groan whenever they read his name and ‘Non-League’ as the subject of a news headline. It is a little bit like when you would flick through the TV channels and you find Clare Balding presenting Crufts, then she’s on the BBC fronting coverage of the athletics and on Channel 4 doing the horse racing. And, in this regard, it’s similar when you see Jamie Vardy and another Non-League angle taken by a sportswriter who is tapping what’s left of an empty keg. His story is not unique to him and is not unique to Non-League football in this country or, indeed, in other football-loving nations. But that should not diminish the feats of his career – Clare Balding is still a great presenter after all, that’s why she is getting all the TV gigs. For Vardy, seeing his career ascend to the international stage was something few footballers can dream of. But here are a few who have trod the same path as the former FC Halifax Town forward. Miroslav Klose (Germany) – FC 08 Homberg The record goalscorer in FIFA World Cups was a bit of a late-bloomer in the sport before becoming a force for Die Mannschaft. At the age of 20, Klose was splitting his time between pulling on the colours of fifth division side FC 08 Homberg and bricklaying before a move to Kaiserslautern II in 1999 saw his career come into fruition. 125 goals for Bundesliga sides Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and European giants Bayern Munich followed, as well as a five-year stint in Italy with Lazio where he averaged one goal every two-and-a-half games. For the national team, Klose became a much-needed puzzle piece that had been missing since Oliver Bierhoff’s retirement. In 137 caps for Germany Klose scored 71 times, including 16 goals at World Cups to pass Ronaldo’s record. Fernando Llorente (Spain) – CD Basconia Granted, Basque country club Basconia act as a feeder club to Athletic Bilbao but they are a club established in their own right and with their own history. Llorente was a teenager when he turned out for the third-tier side reaching double-figures in the 2003-04 season. Eight years with Bilbao followed and so did international honours as Llorente provided the grunt to back up the skill and finesse of David Villa and Fernando Torres in Spain’s World Cup and European Championship double of 2010 and 2012.

AROUND THE LEAGUE Three big FA Cup ties and a barrowload of goals across all three divisions offered plenty of entertainment and drama at the weekend. There was disappointment for our remaining three teams in the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round, with all three going out of the competition. Ashton Athletic lost 5-0 to York City, City of Liverpool lost 4-0 to Chester and Dunston UTS beat Irlam 2-1. Post match reaction from all three games can be found in the news item below. In the Premier Division, Silsden moved back to the top of the table, thanks to Kyle Hancock's 89th minute winner clinching a 3-2 win at Winsford United. Congleton Town are in third place, the Bears coming from behind with goals from Dan Cope and Dean Warburton in the last 20 minutes earning a 2-1 win at Charnock Richard. Barnoldswick Town's 5-1 win over Runcorn Town at the Silentnight Stadium moved them to within one place and five points of their visitors, and Padiham are level on points with Barlick following their 4-0 home win over Litherland REMYCA, in which Michael Fowler scored twice for the Storks. Northwich Victoria's good run of form was ended by a 1-0 defeat at Whitchurch Alport, the decisive goal coming from Nick Porter in the 17th minute Squires Gate's 2-1 defeat at Hanley Town keeps them in eight place, one place above Bootle who won 5-1 at home to Abbey Hey, Carl Peers scoring twice for the Bucks. Taylor Kennerley scored both goals for 1874 Northwich in the 2-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton. The First Division North is now headed by Carlisle City, who moved two points clear at the top with two first half goals from David Renyard setting them on their way to a 4-2 home win over Avro. A second half comeback from AFC Liverpool saw them score three times without reply to earn a 3-1 win at Shelley that moved them into fourth place, and Lower Breck are one place behind following their 3-1 win over Bacup Borough. Cleator Moor Celtic's 7-1 win defeat of AFC Darwen moved them level on points with their visitors, although it was an outcome few would have predicted at half time with Celtic just 1-0 ahead. Goals in the last 14 minutes from Justin Pickering and Theodore Kidd edged Prestwich Heys to a 3-1 home win over Steeton, and a hat trick from Liam DIggle was the highlight of St Helens Town's 9-0 win against bottom of the table Holker Old Boys. Gary Burnett scored twice in Atherton LR's 4-2 win at Garstang, Bradley Smart also bagged a double in Ashton Town's 4-1 win at Daisy Hill and a last minute equaliser from Jake Lloyd salvaged a 2-2 draw for Nelson at home to Chadderton. In the First Division South Rylands top the table after an impressive 5-2 win at Cheadle Heath Nomads. Not for the first time this season, joint player-manager Stuart Wellstead was instrumental in his side's win, scoring his second hat trick of the season. Wythenshawe Amateurs are now in second place after going down 3-2 at New Mills on Friday night after being two up with an hour played, and Vauxhall Motors moved into third place thanks to a 4-3 win in a thriller against St Martins. Daniel Cross struck an 82nd minute winner for the Motormen, who were 3-1 down at the break. Abbey Hulton United are fifth after Lee Cropper's 88th minute winner earned them a 2-1 win at Sandbach United, and Cheadle Town are one point and one place behind with Ruben Abreu's goal clinching a 1-0 win at Ellesmere Rangers. Wythenshawe Town wrote their name in league history with their 11-3 win at Eccleshall being the first time that the score has ever been recorded. Seven different Town players got on the score sheet and Daniel Hudson bagged a hat trick. FC Oswestry Town's David Howarth also bagged a hat trick in his side's 5-2 win at Barnton, and a 90th minute winner from Luke Askey clinched a 3-2 win for Stone Old Alleynians at Maine Road. Elsewhere, Cammell Laird 1907 won 2-0 at Stone Dominoes and an 85th minute Adam Etches penalty secured a 2-2 draw for Stockport Town at home to Alsager Town.
