v Padiham 31.10.2015 NWCFL Premier Division Kick Off: 15:00 Issue 11 ÂŁ1.50
DANNY
PENSWICK Today's visit of Padiham comes just at the right time for us as a squad. Over the past few weeks we've been stretched through injuries and illness, and the lads have been outstanding in their attitude and application to games. We now have competition for places and everyone knows moving forward they must perform to keep their place in the side. We visited Padiham in my first game in charge and came out with a hard fought victory. Since then Padiham have picked up some excellent victories as they look to climb the table and are always a threat going forward with some individual class. I look forward to what should be an open and exciting game and one that if we perform well can give us our first league victory on a Saturday. Up The Gate. Danny
We have match action from our previous games against Atherton Collieries and West Didsbury. We have two special articles; Tony Incenzo from TalkSPORT writes about his time watching non league football and blog writer Matt Harrison writes about his visit to Squires Gate.
We also have our regular features; view from the away end, and prediction corner with Padiham supporter Tony Emmott. We’d like to thank you for purchasing our matchday programme, and hope you enjoy it!
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship) Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship) Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship) Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.
Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship) Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.
Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship) One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship) Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Travel Care World) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White) Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.
0 4 WEST SEND GATE SOUTH Saturday 17th October 2015 Report by Daniel Hayden. Picture by Albert Cooper It says a lot when substitute Ash Rowley got man of the match having only played 20 minutes. Back to square one for Danny Penswick and the lads. After their first home league win the previous Tuesday, Gate hosted West Didsbury & Chorlton with a chance to climb out of the bottom three for their the first time this season if results went their way. Manager Danny Penswick made no changes to the team that beat Silsden in midweek, with Matthew Jones making his debut on the bench. The first chance fell to the away side, as they picked the ball up from the left side and turned inside to put a shot over the bar from 20 yards. 3 minutes later, another chance as the ball was headed away by Gate but only as far as their striker who again put it beyond the crossbar. As Gate started to break into the game, they were caught on the counter attack but Ben Fletcher was there to deny the West striker Ashely Woods. Gates first opportunity came as Josh Kay played a long ball over the top, but Mark Buchan was unable to get there before the defender. Buchan had another chance to put Gate ahead but he couldn't get enough power in his shot to trouble their keeper. The visitors took the lead after 36 minutes as Matthew Kay crossed the ball in to find Steer who headed it over the Gate keeper. They soon doubled their lead on the stroke half time when Steer added to his tally with a well struck shot that lobbed Ben Fletcher. Gate were lucky to only be two goals behind at half time. The second half bought more constant pressure from the away side, and they came out the strongest with a chance within 10 minutes when Woods had his shot parried past the post by Fletcher, and the following corner came to nothing. The home side started to hold possession and McKenna was creating space on the right wing and found Buchan in the box who put the ball just wide of the post. With 20 minutes to go, Fletcher was there once again to deny West Didsbury their third goal, followed up by a clearance off the line by Brett Ferguson. Penswick made three changes, giving a chance to debutant Matthew Jones, but more attacking from the visitors saw Nic Evangelinos put the game beyond Squires Gate as he tucked the ball away past Ben Fletcher. Despite some pressure from the home side, West Didsbury completed the scoring with one minute go when Mark Rodgers turned inside the Gate defence and hit a left footed shot into the bottom corner.

COLLS GO ON THE RAMPAGE Monday 19th October 2015 Report by Daniel Hayden Picture by Albert Cooper.
There was bound to be goals last night as Squires Gate travelled to Atherton Collieries, with the previous meeting ending in a 3-4 defeat for Gate. It was a much better start compared to Saturday, with the first chance falling to Gate midfielder Joe Noblet, who was unable to cut inside the Colls defence to get a shot on target. Rowley had a chance to break the deadlock with a quick counter attack from a Colls corner which led to a three on two situation, but the defender got there just in time. The home side started to show their attacking threat and after constant attacks, they started to open up the Gate defence, forcing mistakes from Colquhoun and Trout. It took only 15 minutes until the resilience was broken, when Colls were awarded a corner and the ball was headed in by debutant Callum Jones who was unmarked at the back post. It's something Gate supporters have seen quite a lot this season. Atherton were not allowing the away side anywhere near the ball, with short tidy passes around the midfield, they eventually got the ball to the left wing only to put the ball over the bar. Fletcher showed his quality when he denied Colls a second on the half hour mark. Buchan had a fantastic chance to draw Gate level 5 minutes before the break but was unable to direct his header into the back of the net. Colls striker Mark Battersby was causing problems for the defence as he flicked the ball over Richards' head only to be denied by Fletcher again. Only one goal separated the two teams at half time. There were two goals in the first ten minutes of the restart, the first came when Colls were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, where Mark Truffas doubled the hosts lead from the set piece. Squires Gate found themselves back in the game when Noblet hit an unstoppable free kick into the top corner, out of the keepers reach. Trout came close to scoring Gates equaliser but his header was pushed over by the Colls keeper. Just as the visitors were getting themselves into the game, Atherton added another. A poor headed clearance could only find the feet of a Colls player who calmly slotted the ball away to make it 31, and the hosts made it 4-1 less than two minutes later. A cross from the left wing was tapped in from five yards. Ryan Riley headed home a consolation goal for Gate but Hardcastle put the game to bed 5 minutes from time.
In our regular feature, we interviewed Padiham supporter Tony Emmott and asked him a few questions about todays visitors and football in general.
Have you been happy with your performances so far this season? Where are you hoping to finish? We’ve had a real mixed bag of results over the season so far. The highlights have been the performances against Atherton Collieries, Maine Road, Colne away, and against AFC Liverpool last weekend. The low point has to be the defeat to West Didsbury & Chorlton and Nelson. It is sometimes difficult to tell which Padiham team is going to turn up! Being optimistic, we are hoping for a top 6 finish! Which Padiham players do you think will cause the most threat to opposition? Kieron Pickup is always a threat when fit, and Chris Turner’s experience and ability will also pose some problems. Martin Parkes and Lee Botham will be solid at the back as always. What has been your most memorable moment/game throughout the time you have been watching Padiham?
As a relatively new supporter, it has to be the FA Cup win over Silsden. If you could pick any 3 PL players, past or present, to join Padiham then who would they be and why? Personally, I’m happy with our squad, but if forced then I would choose Alan Shearer, probably one of the best finishers in his era, Paul Scholes because he his one of the best midfielders to ever play for England, and Tony Adams to give a quality backbone to the team. Which team are you looking forward to playing the most? Obviously Squires Gate! The Blackpool illuminations visit beckoning afterwards! After a 5-1 win for Gate last week, and the 1-0 victory over Padiham earlier this month. Do you think you’ll have enough to beat Gate today? The win last week will have given the squad a confidence boost so let’s hope so! Prediction for today’s game? A 3-1 victory for Padiham.
We’d like to thank Tony Emmott for his time.

CUP FINAL DREAM FOR GATE Saturday 24th October 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Picture by Albert Cooper.
Squires Gate took a welcome break from league action last weekend as they travelled to Maine Road in the MEN United Cup. Gate handed a debut to recent signing Ryan Tanser who started in place of Mark Buchan who was unavailable. Gate made a positive start to that game and looked motivated and up for the tie. They looked very sharp on the ball and moved the ball around quickly from the star. Gate took the lead after just 7 minutes. Josh Kay seemed to cross the ball to the back post but got too much curve on the ball which went over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Gate looked good for the lead and offered a constant threat in attack. Debutant Ryan Tanser had the Road defence worried early on and was constantly buzzing around the home teams back line. Gate would keep up the pressure on the back line and doubled their lead after 26 minutes. Gate displaying lovely quick passing started of by Noblet who found Rowley on the wing. He beat his man before firing the ball across goal to find Noblet in front of the keeper to help the ball past him and make it two. The best goal of the day came for debutant Tanser. He spotted the keeper off the line and lobbed the ball over him into the back off the net after 37 minutes. Gate had the chance again to score soon after when they broke from midfield but Noblet’s shot couldn’t match the quick move. Gate would go into half time 4 goals to the good as 5 minutes before half time they added another. Ash Rowley picking up the ball on the edge of the area before jinking and smashing the ball into the bottom corner. HALF TIME MAINE ROAD 0-4 SQUIRES GATE The home team came out in the second half and looked to have been on the end of a grilling. They came out with more purpose to their game but still didn’t really trouble Gate all to often. An inspired substitution bought around Gate’s 5th of the game. Jake Higham volleying the ball into the back of the net with his second touch of the ball since coming onto the field after a good cross from Richards. The home side would get a goal back something, which their second half performance probably deserved.

When the club was formed in 1878 it was among the first football clubs in Lancashire and was well supported, attracting an attendance of 9,000 for a match against neighbours Burnley in 1884.At this time Padiham's ground was on the banks of the River Calder, hence the nickname, The Caldersiders. Then in 1949 the club was resurrected with the opening of the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground. A crowd of 1,777 turned up to see their opening fixture of the season in the Lancashire Combination Football League. They became founder members of the North West Counties Football League in 1982 but left the league in 1990. They returned in 2000 after spending ÂŁ500,000 on upgrading the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground and finished in the top four of the second division in 2003 and 2005. They gained promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One North for season 2013/14 after winning the North West Counties Football League Premier Division in season 2012/13, but returned to the North West Counties League after being relegated two seasons later.

Sixteen ties in the Men United Cup and four games in Division One provided the talking points from the weekend. In the 2nd Round of the Men United Cup, four Division One clubs knocked out Premier Division opponents, with second in the table Runcorn Linnets the highest placed club to be knocked out, losing 2-0 at Irlam courtesy of goals in each half from Michael Itela and Jordan Southworth. Barnton beat Bootle 4-3 on penalties, after the sides were tied at 1-1 after extra time, and two Division One sides triumphed on the road. Managerless Alsager Town lost 3-0 at home to Stockport Town, all the goals coming in the first half, with Nathan Neequaye scoring two penalties. When Rick Gleave put West Didsbury & Chorlton a goal up after just three minutes at home to Eccleshall, it looked like being a good afternoon for the Premier Division side. But Angelo Enrico equalised just before the half hour and Oliver Jepson turned out to be the Eccleshall hero with a last minute winner. Squires Gate were the highest scorers of the weekend with an impressive 5-1 win at Maine Road, with five different players getting on the scoresheet, and highest scoring game of the day was at Victoria Park, where an extra time winner from Adam Nuttall earned Nelson a 4-3 win over Congleton Town, after the sides had been tied at 3-3 after 90 minutes. Two goals from Matthew Beadle helped 1874 Northwich to a 4-0 win over landlords Winsford United, and Cammell Laird 1907 won by the same score at Daisy Hill, with Craig Cairns scoring his third hat trick of the season for Lairds. Bacup Borough also scored four on the road, with their first ever visit to Hanley Town ending in a 4-2 win, with goals in the last eleven minutes from Shane Birtles and Matthew Dell proving decisive. Ashton Athletic and AFC Blackpool progressed into the next round with 3-1 wins at Barnoldswick Town and AFC Darwen, and an 8th minute penalty from Chris Wademan was enough to secure a 1 -0 win for Silsden at Abbey Hey. Ashton Town and Rochdale Town both gave their Premier Division opponents an uncomfortable 90 minutes, both losing out two last minute winners. With two minutes to go a Ryan Allessandro goal had Rochdale ahead against Colne, but Ben Allen and Dominic Craig both struck to secure the win for the Reds, and it was a similar story at Ashton Town, who led Runcorn Town with a Daniel Griffiths goal until 11 minutes from the end, before James McShane and Gareth Grant scored for the visitors. A Martin Parkes goal six minutes from time earned Padiham a 3-2 win at AFC Liverpool, and Atherton Collieries secured their place in the next round with a 2-0 win at home to Litherland REMYCA, thanks to goals in the last 20 minutes from Mark Battersby and Dave Sherlock. Four games were played in the First Division, and Cheadle Town moved into a play off position thanks to an 89th minute goal from Richard Whyatt earning them a 1-0 win at Chadderton.

THORNTON CLEVELEYS BLUES 2-10 SQUIRES GATE An end to end opening with few chances for either team, but both trying to play which was good to see Thornton posed a problem to Gate playing with a 5-3-2 which was difficult to break down. A break down the left hand side saw Jack Robinson tuck an effort under the goalkeeper. Thornton posed a roblem to Gate playing with a 5-3-2 which was difficult to break down. A break down the left hand side saw Jack Robinson tuck an effort under the goalkeeper. A flowing attack then saw Brogan Grundy score a fine volley from a Luca Stefani. Grundy then scored a second immediately after chipping the keeper from the penalty spot. Thornton kept Gates back 4 on their toes with number 10 getting a lot of space in the centre of the park. josh Dolby-Armstrong made an immediate impact after coming on scoring with an effort from wide on the right hand side. The final scoring of the half was completed by Ethan Goulding. Gate could have been further in front if not for impressive handling by Thornton's keeper. Second half was very much one way with little for the back four to do, but a counter attack saw the impressive Ellis score, the same thing happened minutes later to make the score 5-2. With Connah Trevelyan and Ethan Goulding controlling the tempo of the game. In the last 15 minutes gate upped the anti firstly, a ball forward from Stefani to Nathan Nicholas who put a fantastic ball into the box where Robinson tapped into an open goal. That opened the floodgates again, Luke Myers who was very impressive at right back stepped in and hit an effort from 25 yards into the far bottom corner, Goulding got his second of the game with a fine finish from good play through the middle of the park. Then goal of the game as Dolby-Armstrong drilled a ball into Nicholas who flicked into the path of Stefani who used the outside of his foot to volley over the keeper. Final goal of the game was a return in favour with Nicholas through on goal and scoring with a fine one on one. Although conceding 2, the back four of Oscar Dugdale, Ad-

In our previous home game, against West Didsbury & Chorlton, Gate had a visit from groundhopper and writer of ‘lostboyos’ Matt Harrison. You can read a bit of his blog here: “There at the turnstiles I met Dan, an exiled Watford fan and current stand in-media man at Squires Gate. I’d almost met up with Dan when I went to Celtic v Inter Milan in February, so it was great to finally meet the lad who clearly is a great lover of the game like myself. After saying hello to Dan, I had time to survey the ground. First opinion: it was modest but likable. The clubhouse isn’t the most gargantuan that you are ever going to visit, but it does its job with a small bar and seating area. No taps on the bar here though and instead the day was spent drinking £2 cans of Carling from the fridge. I’d been told by Rob to make sure I wasn’t full up on arriving at the ground as he had dubbed Squires Gare’s pies as the ‘best in the league’, so I took his advice and made sure I had room for such a lauded pie. On sampling the aforementioned pie, did I agree with Rob’s verdict? Eh…probably not. It was alright effort but it didn’t dazzle me either; matters were not helped by the tough coating of the pie and the plastic fork, which struggled to deal with the pie until eventually the plastic prongs started snapping. Anyway, pitchside for the game! If there was one team that was going to guarantee me goals today, it was West Didsbury & Chorlton. The Manchester club had scored a staggering 32 goals in their past 5 games, in a run which included a stunning 15 – 1 win over Dinnington in the FA Vase. Fortunately, for us watching on, they lived up to their recent billing as a goal glut team. The game was West’s game from the start and they never really looked in danger. Both teams had a few half chances but nothing of note really happened until the 36th minute when WD&CFC took the lead. A ball was crossed from the left and Ben Steer steered (see what I did there) his header over the Gate goalie to make it 1-0. I considered the opening goal to be my cue to go complete a lap of the ground. There are not many nooks and crannies to the ground, but my walk did give me a chance to have a nose over the fence at Blackpool Wren Rovers’ Bruce Park ground. The bottom platform area of one of the floodlights gave me a boost up to look over the fence and I could have quite easily watched Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserves v Ladybridge, whilst watching the game I was at at the same time. I wasn’t that desperate to take in two games at once though – one would do for me. As I was completing my lap, West made it 2 – 0 and it was Steer with his second goal of the day. This time Steer scored with a well hit shot that lobbed the goalie. And that was that for the first half – Squires Gate were admittedly lucky that it was only 2 – 0 as it had been a largely one-sided affair. Back in the clubhouse, more beer was purchased and I joined Dan as he was typing up his match report on his iPad. We chatted away about all things footballs and our chat carried over into the start of the second half, as we watched on from the conservatory-like entrance to the clubhouse. I figured that Squires Gate needed a match report and so I left Dan get in with it and went back out to join Rob, Pete and Paul West’s third goal of the game would eventually come in the 82nd minute and was scored by the superbly named Nic Evangelinos. Evangelinos cut in from the right before firing a low drive home. There was still time for one more goal and once again it was WD&CFC getting on the scoresheet and making it 4 – 0. West’s fourth came from a lovely run from Mark Rogers, that saw him fly past a couple of defenders, before playing a nice one-two, which he got on the end of and finished easily. And that was it for today’s game. Matt has now groundhopped 200 football grounds around the world, after his trip to Grimsby Town last night! MALTBY MAIN 0-3 SQUIRES GATE Sat 7thSeptember, 2013
GATE HIT 3 PAST MALTBY MAIN IN THE VASE Squires Gate had to call on young and old to shore up their side to visit 'The Miners' across the moors in Yorkshire, for their fist FA Vase game of the season, was at Northern Counties Eastern League Premier Division side, Maltby Main. With several regulars calling off for one reason or another, Player Manager, Dave Pics by Albert Cooper McCann, called upon some of his younger squad, to face a side with lots of history, and experience, who were formed in 1916, in the middle of the first World War, from miners working at the Pit. He also dusted off his boots to shore up a defence that had leaked 14 goals in the last 6 games. On a bright sunny afternoon the visitors playing down hill on the sloping pitch, with stalks of long grass covering it, JOE NOBLETT, who is just 17 year old, having celebrated his birthday last month. Put them into the lead on 9 mins, after some early pressure from Gate. The home team fought to try to get control of the game, but Dave McCann's influence was obvious, and his team were up to the challenge, with defenders Jamie Roskell, Jamie Bryson, and Neil Unsworth in charge at the heart of Gate's defence. While the midfield made opportunities through, Sam Farrow, Chris Churchman, and Jake Sowerby, while the ever running Max Landless along with Joe Noblett, kept the home defence busy. It was gate who faced the uphill slope in the second half, which was 'Even Steven', and the next goal would change the pattern of the game, with Gate keeper Ben Fletcher being called upon more as the match progressed. Sub Jamie McQuillan, came on, and his fresh legs were effective for the uphill task, and when he beat the home defence and raced into the box, he was brought down with a trip from the home player manager Brian Cusworth. Joe Noblett, took the penalty kick and made no mistake to put Gate two up on the 72 min. Maltby pilled on the pressure and Ben Fletcher was the busiest Gate player in the last closing fifteen mins of the game, and when sub Seydou

Tony Incenzo of talkSPORT Radio (twitter: @TonyIncenzo) has groundhopped over 2000 grounds in the world, and speaks about his time breaking a world record, going to a prison just to watch a football game, and his plans for the future. We’d like to thank Tony for letting us use his article in this weeks programme. IN THE BEGINNING I’ve been watching NonLeague football on a regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, club officials and supporters are there for the love of the game. The true spirit of football exists at Non-League level. I grew up in North-West London and I was taken by my family to see my local club QPR as a child in the 1970’s. I’ve always supported the R’s, but when they were playing away from home I started going to see my local NonLeague clubs - Hendon primarily, but also Finchley, Barnet and Edgware Town. GROUNDHOPPER From there, I decided to visit every Non-League club in London as my groundhopping bug began. By the time I was 17, I had visited all 92 Football League grounds and I visited all the Scottish League grounds whilst still a teenager. Since then, I’ve continued travelling all around the country to visit Non-League clubs. Earlier this season, I chalked up my 2,000th ground at FC United of Manchester.
