The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “SATURDAY WAS A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ME. I CAN ACCEPT LOSING BUT WHAT I WASN’T HAPPY WITH IS THE MANNER OF THE DEFEAT” Tonight we welcome Padiham in an what’s is important game for the club.

Results haven't been going to plan and despite a few false dawns I firmly believe we have enough quality in the changing room to start winning games consistently.

Saturday was a real disappointment for me. I can accept losing but what I wasn't happy with is the manner of the defeat. We were second best all over and ended the game in a whimper. People aren't just going to roll over and give us three points. We're going to have to stand up and take them and that needs to start tonight. Let's hope we see a marked improvement from Saturday and get our first home league points of the season. Up the Gate

DANNY

Saturday 30th September 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance 160 The debutant was called into action after just two minutes when he had to be alert. He pushed the testing shot up in the air, before catching the ball. Moments later it was Carroll who had to be alert to knock the ball out for a corner. It was from that corner that the first goal would come. The corner was cleared to the edge of the box where a Linnets man played it back in to find Wellstead who turned and fired past Webb. The visitors would then score a second goal on 23 minutes but that effort would be ruled out in a very late decision by the linesman for offside. Gate’s best chance of the first came in the 33rd minute. Jack Williams worked hard to win the ball back on the edge of Runcorn Linnet’s box. He then squared the ball to Gal Pett, but Pett fired his shot over the bar. The visitors would grab their second goal just before the half time whistle. Gate failing to clear the ball in the box which fell to Paul Shanley who fired past Webb to double the lead.

Half time: Squires Gate 0-2 Runcorn Linnets

Much like the start of the first half, it would be the visitors who would start the half the better side. They extended their lead on 49 minutes with perhaps the easiest goal of the afternoon. Midfielder Michael Simpson allowed too much time and space to walk through Gate’s defence unchallenged to score. Gate made a double change looking to freshen things up with both Dean Ing and Tarren Moxon coming back from injury and both making a decent impact. Both showed attacking intent and caused Linnets defence some problems. But despite their impact, it would be Linnets who would strike again. The shot from distance from Mark Houghton looked saveable but just sneaked in tight past the post. Linnets would then add another on 75 minutes as Gate changed to three at the back, looking to get a goal back. Adam Jones at the back-post volleying in a deep cross for the classy finish. Late on for Linnets the visitors could have had another two goals. Firstly manager Danny Penswick cleared the ball off the line, before a shot from outside the box cannoned off the post. Full time: Squires Gate 0-5 Runcorn Linnets

LAST TEN SEASONS:

THE BOSS

LIAM SMITH & DIXON LAMBERT . These 2 have only just been announced over the past few weeks after Padiham sacking old manager Steve Wilks. A few weeks ago the Club give the League this statement ahead of there game with Runcorn linnets that Saturday Padiham Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Liam Smith and Dixon Lambert as the new Management team. They come with a wealth of experience, ambition and are looking forward to improving our success on the pitch. They take up their new roles with immediate effect and will be taking charge of Saturday's away fixture at Runcorn Linnets. The Committee and everyone associated with the football club wishes them the best of luck going forward, and cannot wait to start working together to improve the club's performances. We would like to thank our former management team Steve Wilkes, Steve Pickup and Andy Payton for their time at the club, and wish them all the best for the future".

BREIF HISTORY It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879, reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters. Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham`s initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham`s progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club`s involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915 - 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when they were reformed. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 - 50 football season. In 1982, Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League, however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000/2001 season, winning the Premier Division Title in 2012/13 to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League, where they spent two seasons before being relegated back to the North West Counties Football League for the 2015/16 season. Since 1999 the club has spent in the region of ÂŁ600,000 upgrading their ground.

TUESDAY 13TH SEPETMBER 2016

Gate struggled to get going from the start of the game with no real presence up front as an outlet. Padiham looked to control the game constantly using for AFC Fylde striker James Dean as an outlet up top. The visitors almost opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Aaron Taylor meeting Garry Hunters Freekick but his header could only find the crossbar. Just a minute after that Padiham would take the lead. Ben Fletcher coming out of his goal to clear the ball caught the Padiham attacker inside the box. Aaron Taylor stepped up to the spot to out the visitors in the lead. Just two minutes later it could have be 2-0. Gate sloppy with a back pass allowed Taylor in for Padiham but his shot was saved well low down by Fletcher. When Gate did get forward to attack they created some good chances. Alex Mckendrick doing well to get forward on 24 minutes but his whipped cross into the box couldn't find anyone on the end of it. Mark Buchan then he a shot from distance which just went wide of the post. Despite Gates limited spell of chances it would be Padiham who struck again. Aaron Taylor tapping in after the ball was crossed to easy from the right hand side. And soon after the visitors would make it three. Winger Coyne making a brilliant run down the right hand side to escape his marker and fire low past Fletcher. Manager Danny Penswick made two changes at half time with Brett Dawson and Jake Higham coming on for Mark Thornber and Alex Mckendrick and both sparked abit of life into Gate after the break. Gate had an early chance from a corner but that was well defended by Padiham. Just a few minutes after that Gates concentration dropped again. Another loose pass at the back was picked up by James Dean who made no mistake to fire it past Fletcher. Gate would be offered a way back into the game on 66 minutes after a foul in the box. Mark Buchan steeping up to score his third in two games and grab a goal back for Gate. Two minutes later and Padiham could and should have been down to 10 men. Defender Marc Young going studs in on Brett Dawson's mid drift but somehow got away with a warning. Unfortunately that would be how the game would end for Gate who suffered probably their worst defeat of the season.

WEDNESDAY 19TH OCTOBER 2016

Gate made two changes to the team that lost to Barnton at the weekend with Ryan Stayte coming in for Andrew Richards and Joe Noblet coming in for Ryan Riley. The first half had limited chances for either side who faced each other in September. The Storks winning that one 4-2. Gates limited chances came in the 24th and 33rd minutes. The first came from a corner which was fired in towards the head of Bamba, returning to his former club. He was in the middle but unfortunately keeper Donlon came out to punch clear. Gates second chance came when Brett Dawson did well to close down the keeper who panicked with the ball. Unfortunately for Gate the keeper recovered well before Dawson could find the waiting Seear. HT - Padiham 0-0 Squires Gate The second half was much of the same for either team. Both clubs cancelled each other out for much of the half.

Striker Brett Dawson got into a few good positions most notably on 53 minutes. He tricked his way past Padiham's right back but shot the wrong side of the post. Joe Noblet was next for Gate to take aim this time from a Freekick. After a foul near the edge of the box Joe Noblet stepped up but fired just wide of the post. Brett Dawson was sent through again with Gates best chance of the game. His striker partner Ric Seear played a clever ball through the defence to find Dawson's run. Dawson took a touch and fired but keeper Donlon did well to get down to his right to stop the shot. When perhaps a draw would have been a fair result for the game, the home side would win it late on. A scramble in the box fell to James Dean who poked past Fletcher in the 90th minute.

PADIHAM

Saturday 30th September / Townfield Stadium // Attendance 46 Barton and Padiham met Saturday in what will be a entreating game, Padiham the heavying having chances early on with 3 minutes paled but Padiham striker couldn't keep his chance down and blazed it over. After 8 minutes more rain began to pour and left it a quite first half. Another chance came on the 25 minutes where Malone for Barton fired his shoot just wide of the Padiham post. After that there was not really mich else happened in the first half apart a disallowed goal for Padiham Half Time Barton 0 Padiham 0 Going in to the second half we finally had our firs goal it was Padiham after this 7 minutes into the second half. Padiham was on the foot from there where another chance 4 minutes later where Barton keeper Cooke saved the ball into the path of a paid ham player but the Padiham player couldn't captained on his mistakes and missed the open goal. It then didn't take Barton long to get back on level terms as Barton Player Bandell gets of a smith cross to make the game 1-1. just 3 minutes later there was another goal for Barnton this Malone smashed a nice ball in from inside the box. Plenty of chance form both side as on the 77 Minutes Padiham level the game up again after Barton fail to clear there own lines, just a few minutes later Padiham could off took the lead for the second time but there chance hit the bar. Going into the last 10 minutes off the games both team had good chances but it was Padiham who took the there chances and won the with 3 minutes to play when there got a chance inside the box and the Padiham player took the chance well to made it 3-2padiham and the winning goal for Padiham.

DARREN OUTHWAITE

This week we interviewed Padiham Fan Darren Outhwaite, we asked him what he think will be different this season then last. We also found out who would be in his 5 a side team and about his time at Padiham What are your expectations for the the new season after last season?

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

I would like to think that we could push for promotion but with 2 very strong Runcorn teams that's very difficult.

Tom heaton (top class)Eden hazard (magician)Philippe coutinho (great vision)

This season will been different to last because?

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score?

Because we have a new management team and committee which have new and exciting ideas

Yes last season and (I think) we won 2-0??

Who has been ur most memorable moment of all time at Padiham? Playing in the evo stick was always a highlight.

LAST TIME OUT? WEST DIDSBURY 2 SQUIRES GATE 3 Gate had this first chance of the game after 30 seconds. A Freekick won just outside of the box but was fired over by Brett Dawson. The homeside would have their first chance of the game after five minutes but they headed wide from the flicked on throw in. Dawson would make up for his early miss by putting Gate ahead after 11 minutes. He reacted quickly to latch onto a weak back pass to the keeper. He took the ball away from him and tapped into an empty net. After the goal came abit of a stalemate between the two teams with both cancelling each other out and neither really threatening. West did well to defend several Gate shots on 30 minutes with several player throwing their bodies at the shots. West could have equalised on 34 minutes when the striker was sent through with a long ball. He strode into the box but chose to shoot from the right angle rather than cut the ball back into the box. Gate would grab a second goal two minutes before half time. Great pressing from Gate's attack around West's penalty box leading to a mistake. First Dawson then Tanser pressed but it was Jamie Gibson who nicked the ball back and fired past the keeper. The homeside would grab a goal back on 56 minutes. A long throw into the box found West's number 5 who headed past Fletcher. As quickly as they'd scored one, they'd scored another 3 minutes later. A low ball into the box found West's striker who fired low past Fletcher. Gate would grab the winning goal on 64 minutes. A lovely move involve all three of the front three. Ryan Tanser sent a lovely ball over to find Brett Dawson, he controlled the ball and passed to Ric Seear who cooley finished past the keeper. Gate did well late on, to defend a barrage of pressure from the homeside who pressed for an equaliser.

2014

GLOSSOP NORTH END

3 2 GATE

Saturday 04 October 2014

GATE LEAVE DERBYSHIRE WITH NOTHING BUT HAS THINGS TO TAKE FROM TRIP TO GLOSSOP Squires Gate travelled to Derbyshire town of Glossop to visit second in the league Glossop North End. Gate looking to continue the good form that saw them come from 2-0 down against Bacup on Saturday to turn it around and win 4-3. Gate made one change from Saturdays win with Steven Eyango-bwanga coming in to make his debut for the unavailable Harry Dunn. It was a fairly open start to the game with both teams having early chances. Glossop though had the better chances and forced Gate to sit in and defend for long periods of the first half. Glossop could have been ahead with 20 minutes gone the home side finding themselves four on three but the cut back ball was fired over the bar and Gate were let off. Gate looked spurred on by this missed opportunity and started fighting and wanting the ball more. Gate managed to clear the ball forward to the feet of Jack Sowerby who laid the ball off to Alex Murphy who cleverly played it back over the top to the run of Jack Sowerby, the leading Gate striker then turned past two defenders and rocketed the ball past the helpless goalkeeper to open the scoring for Squires Gate. Gate again looked to attack the home side with the impressive Steven Eyango-Bwanga running down the left hand side his cross found Alex Murphy’s head who found the back of the net to make it two for Squires Gate. Gate would have been very happy to go into half time two up but couldn't hold on. There were suspicions of offside as the ball was played along the face of goal for the unmarked Glossop man to tap in at the far post to give the home side one back going into half time. Into the second half and the home side had definitely been on the end of a roasting in the break. The home side looked a completely different team. It was a defensive error that cost Gate with the home side pulling the game level early into the second half, Gate didn't get the favourable bounce of the ball after Penswick's clearance hit off the Glossop attacker who capitalised to even up the game. Even after the insertion of new signing Mark Buchan, with his intended strike partner Sowerby substituted, Gate just couldn't get going in the second half and were described as never coming out of the dressing room by manager Dave McCann in the second half. Gate’s day was made worse as the home side took the lead the ball fired in from the edge of the box to beat keeper Fletcher.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE EUROPEAN CUPUP KICKS GERMANY DOUBLES ONOFF BRAZIL

1955 2007

On 30 September 2007, Germany won their second consecutive Women's World Cup, beating Brazil 2-0. In their bid to retain the trophy, the Germans started with an offensive explosion, annihilating Argentina 11-0. But then their dominant defense took over, keeping clean sheets all the way to the final. The only blemish on their campaign was a scoreless draw with England in the group stage. The Brazilians were similarly stalwart. Though they had conceded two goals to Australia in the quarterfinals, they won every match on the way to their meeting with Germany, thanks in part to the seven goals provided by Marta, the tournament's leading scorer. Playing at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai, the teams kept each other scoreless through the first half, but German forward and captain Birgit Prinz broke the deadlock with a strike in the 52nd minute. It was her fourteenth World Cup goal overall, making her the competition's all-time leading scorer. Marta had a chance to equalize with a second-half penalty, but German keeper Nadine Angerer saved the attempt. Midfielder Simone Laudehr then cemented the victory in the 86th minute. The 2-0 scoreline was a mirror image of the men's final in 2002, when Brazil took the honors. Prinz retired after the tournament. Marta continued to play at the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, raising

THE ASCENSION OF CERRO PORTENO

1912

On 1 October 1912, a group of friends in Ascunsión founded Cerro Porteño. With 29 league titles, they have become one of Paraguay's most successful clubs. That first meeting was held at the home of Susana Nuñez, mother of one of the players. They chose the name "Cerro Porteño" after the nearby location of a famous battle where, in 1811, Paraguayan soldiers held off an invasion by Argentinian forces. As their colors, they chose red and blue, uniting the colors associated with the country's rival political parties. That choice led to Cerro Porteño becoming known as "the club of the people." They won their first national title in 1913, quickly followed by additional ones in 1915, 1918, and 1919. The 1920s passed without silverware, but Cerro Porteño have claimed at least one league title in every decade since. Their most dominant period came in the 1970s, when they won five (1970, 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1977). The club's current total of 31 is second only to Olimpia (40). Their most recent trophy came in 2015, when they won the Apertura by five points over Guaraní .

JUST IMAGINE WHERE THEY’D HAVE BEEN WITHOUT OUT IT On 2 October 2010, Dundee beat Greenock Morton 2-1 to start a clubrecord 23-game unbeaten streak. Which left them in the exact same spot in the table they were in when they started it. It was the eighth matchday of the Scottish Division One season, which opened with Dundee in seventh place after an away loss to Cowdenbeath. They were hosting Morton at Dens Park, where a crowd of 4,068 turned up to see what turned out to be the start of a record run. Dundee took the lead in the 25th minute after the referee called a handball on Morton and Matt Lockwood converted the ensuing penalty. They failed to hold it to the break, however, as Peter Weatherson drew the visitors level with a goal off a corner kick in the 41st minute. But Dundee pulled back ahead for good in the 57th minute with Colin McMenamin scoring the match winner. They followed the result by going undefeated in their next 22 matches, with thirteen more wins and only nine draws. But remarkably, when that record string ended with a loss to Raith Rovers on 2 April 2011, Dundee were still in seventh place (and had even dropped down to 10th for a period of eight weeks in the middle of the streak). They finished the season in sixth.

We're supporting Prostate Cancer this Non-League Day Gate will be supporting when they kick off Non-League day this season and below you can see Alan Pardew though on Non-league and Prostate Cancer. Alan Pardew: “Managers absolutely neglect their health but prostate cancer shouldn’t be ignored” The former Premier League boss opens up about how the disease has affected his family, while urging fans to show their support for Prostate Cancer UK on Non-League Day this Saturday 7 October. Former Newcastle, West Ham and Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew is calling for everyone to get behind Non-League Day and show their support for Prostate Cancer UK – by wearing their badge with pride on the terraces. The annual football initiative, scheduled during the international break, helps raise the profile of community football. And as the official charity partner, Prostate Cancer UK has dozens of non-league clubs fundraising for them on the day with everything from raffles to sponsored walks. Alan started his career as a part-time player with Whyteleafe and then Epsom & Ewell while working as a glazier, and he's revealed which team he'll be off to support on Saturday 7 October with his 'Man of Men' pin-badge emblazoned on his jacket. "I'll probably go and watch Dulwich Hamlet, a proper team," says Alan, who played in midfield for the club a year before his big move to the professional ranks with Crystal Palace in 1987. "Non-league football has always been close to my heart and is growing, which is great to see. I hope fans of professional clubs go and support their local non-league sides because it's all one big pyramid. We all feed into each other." But Alan's support for Non-League Day goes beyond just football. He's also mindful of the three members of his family he knows have or have had prostate cancer. "One was caught early and he's clear now," he says. "The second one had to have a little bit more treatment and found it difficult, and they're still suffering a little bit. And the third one, unfortunately, it's spread to other areas and is proving much more difficult. It's quite upsetting, really, for all the family." He says the Prostate Cancer UL pin-badge being worn by so many top-flight managers – including England manager Gareth Southgate – has been brilliant in getting the message out there about the disease and knowing your risk. It's a message he thinks the wearers of the badge need to hear as much as the fans. "Managers absolutely neglect their health," he admits. "You're so engrossed in your job that you kind of start to ignore it. And that happens, I think, in a lot of walks of life. You're totally busy and you think, 'Oh, I've got a slight problem there', and you put it off to the next day and start thinking about something else. But I don't think problems down there are a good thing to ignore, particularly for men over a certain age." Since being sacked as manager of Crystal Palace last December, Alan has worked as a pundit on Sky Sports – but it sounds like the change of career is only temporary.

"It's different, I've enjoyed it," he says. "There's a similar kind of adrenaline on match days, which I like. But ultimately it's not a path that I think I'm going to stay on forever. I want to go back and be a football manager at some point."
