TWO

SUGARS We caught up with manager Luke Evans over a brew this week, as he gave us his thoughts on the week ahead...

Welcome to our first home game in what seems like the longest pre season ever. Tonight’s visitors are Padiham and we hope that all the fans have had a safe and pleasant trip over from East Lancashire. We know what to expect from them and we know that we are in for a tough night.

Pre season also saw my assistant Shane Hudson move on as he went to be closer to home which is perfectly understandable. I thank Shane for all his time and effort and he was a huge part of moving this club on.

having his perm done and Ryan Riley has a dislocated knee. Luke Holden and Joe Johanson should be back inside the next two weeks and Dean Ing serves the last of a two game ban this evening.

A good friend of mine Ganners a very successful footballer in his own right told me that without hard work and dedication he wouldn’t have the doughnut stall he has now and that’s exactly right and if the boys can take a similar attitude into this season we won’t be far away.

Replacing Shane is Andy Baker who is a good Mozza’s teams fight and scrap for every ball as he friend of mine who has a fantastic football CV and did as a player and we will have to be up for the currently works for Manchester City. He can boast fight if we want anything out of tonight. Burnley and a host of non league clubs as his previous clubs. I feel Andy is a real coup for this Luckily we can bounce back into action tonight after the disappointment of Saturday and with most club and I feel his impact is already being felt. As of us still scratching our heads as to how we failed well as the playing side of the things we have been working very hard. We have replaced the club to get anything from the game. Football can be a house roof and got ourselves a whole new shower cruel game at times but we got a lesson into how important it is to take your chances. For 80 minutes system this summer. we have dominated that game and ultimately it was We have had an excellent job done on the pitch for nothing. The only thing that we can take from it and I just have to personally thank the chairman is that the performance was excellent. Tony Jo for his support as so much needed doing We are pleased to say that Cam Gourley’s injury is and he has supported us with everything. There is better than first feared and he joins us in the squad so much more to catch up on but we will go into that info more detail over the coming week. I feel this evening. Whilst mentioning that unfortunately we still have a number of players unavailable at the this can be a really successful season for us but we need to bring our A game every week. moment due to various things. Jack Iley is still

All in all pre season was a successful one with some fantastic nights for the club specifically the AFC Fylde one where we had a sell out crowd and a fantastic night was had by all. We hope to have picked up some new fans after that game and we welcome anyone who wants to lend us their sup-

buzzing to be playing back at home.

Wow, it feels like a lifetime since we have played a league game. Just as we were starting to pick up some form at the end of last season, it came to a sudden stop, for obvious reasons.

There’s no doubt that tonight will be another tough test for us, as every game in this league is but we really do have the quality in this side. Sometimes you come up against teams that play a physical game and that’s where we have to match them.

Now we find ourselves starting afresh, and giving ourselves a good chance to be at the top this season. The gaffer came in, and he’s told us what he wants and everyone at the club is on board with it. He’s implemented his own way of doing things, and the lads are behind him. We have a very talented group who are capable of getting us fighting at the right end. We’ve had an enjoyable pre season; we played on the BBC and made a name for ourselves, we beat two teams from higher leagues and we have been unlucky in some games to not get results.

The gaffer has done his homework for tonight, he has had us working hard in training to make sure we get things right. I hope we can play in front of another good crowd, as we have really seen an increase in the figures and that does give us a big boost on the pitch too. Up The Gate!

The overall team spirit in the changing rooms is great, the lads are working for each other, and we don’t want to let each other down on the pitch. That’s key when you want to achieve the things we want to achieve this season. As captain, I’m enjoying leading the club and I’ll continue to get the lads to work hard on and off the pitch as we try and push for promotion this year. I think we have really shown that we are a tight group, and to lose the way we did on Saturday was gutting. Not only did we deserve to win, but we should have been well clear by the end of the first half so to lose it the way we did, there’s no words for it really. But we move on from that now, we reflected on the result on Saturday but when you play again a few days later, it helps the motivation as we are all Squires Gate Football Club

GATE A A LOOK BACK OVER SQUIRES GATE’S ALPHABETICAL HISTORY ASHTON ATHLETIC

ANDY RICHARDS

Gate have travelled to Ashton Athletic twice on the final game of the season needing to get a result, and both times have got the win needed. In 2015, Joe Noblet had a controversial goal disallowed after the ball hit the back of the net and bounced off the bar around the perimeter of the pitch. The goal can be viewed on YouTube, and was in the local and national newspapers!

Andy Richards (pictured left), better known as Rico, played a massive part in the club for 10 years. Captaining the club during that time. Rico played his part in virtually every part on the pitch, and even had a go in net for our game against Wigan Robin Park in 2014, replacing the sent off Ben Fletcher.

Rico left the club in 2018, but will remain as a club legend.

Our gaffer also was once on Ashton Athletic’s management

ALBERT COOPER Albert has been a massive part of the club for years. Volunteers are a massive part of any non league club, and the work Albert does behind the scenes is unbelievable. He has produced many fantastic photographs throughout the years, and has some stories to tell including taking a picture of the Charlton brothers after the 1966 World Cup victory. Albert first came to the club in the early 2000s to watch his grandson play football for the old junior side and since then has been hooked on the club. There is no doubt that he is a vital part of the club, and we cannot thank him enough for his hard work! We will be continuing our A-Z of Squires Gate in our next programme when we look at everything Squires Gate related, beginning with the letter B! Squires Gate Football Club

The blues fell behind to a Andrew Hill goal, before former Gate striker Ric Seear doubled their lead. However, Ing and Charnley were on hand to earn a point for the visitors. In recent seasons, we have found it a difficult place to go with the last win at The Silentnight Stadium dating back to October 11th 2016. Pretty much 4 years to the date exactly. Can history repeat itself? This time, Ric Seear was scoring for us, netting a hat trick in the process. It’s a funny old game.

PADIHAM It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the `Caldersiders` as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire`s soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England.

The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the `Arbories` Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1,777 spectators turned up to see the Club`s opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949 - 50 football season.

Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.`s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initially leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall.

MARK BAILEY

PPADIHAM 0 SALFORD CITY 1 - 2014 Words from Joseph Gibbons’ blog “Gibbos92”. Padiham: Sean Davis, Max Jones (Lewis Jordan), Sam Morris, Marin Parkes, Dean Overson, Dominic Craig, Mark Sharples (Ashley Carter), Chris Turner, Rob Whyte, Kieron Pickup, Spencer Jordan (Tom Murphy) It was Padiham who had the first chance to open the scoring when a long ball found its way to Spencer Jordan who laid it off to Kieron Pickup. A low shot was deflected for a corner which was taken by Rob Whyte. Martin Parkes came close to heading the ball home from close range but a Salford defender applied a crucial touch to deny the Storks. Former Curzon Ashton midfielder Stuart Cook was instrumental for Salford and he set up Mark Batterbsy on 12 minutes with a precise pass from the left. From the edge of the box he fired towards goal but it went narrowly wide. The deadlock was broken just three minutes later when Matt Purcell crossed to Rio Ahmadi on the edge of the area. The ball was laid off to Battersby who unselfishly rolled a pass across the face of goal for Cook to finish past Sean Davis. The Storks tried to respond by keeping possession and it nearly paid off when Dominic Craig chased a long ball towards goal. All that was needed was a quick touch to take the ball past the advancing goalkeeper by Daniel Fradd made a fantastic challenge to deny the forward. It should have been 2-0 to City ten minutes before the interval when goalkeeper Davis spilt a high cross which was sent in by Danny Browne. He spilled the ball to the feet of Ahmadi but he was unable to steer the ball inside the near post. Salford were dominant as the half closed and Purcell could have scored twice if it wasn’t for some desperate Padiham defensive work. Jamie Tandy then sent in a precision cross to Ahamdi who headed just wide of the post. The second half started as the first half had finished with Ahmadi unable to convert his chances into goals. This time he saw his close range header saved by Davis who reacted well to keep the glancing effort out. The home side nearly got back on level terms on 50 minutes when Dominic Craig surged past Richard Smith on the left wing. His original shot was blocked but he steered the rebound into the path of Spencer Jordan who saw his shot somehow deflect over the bar when it looked certain to be a goal. With 18 minutes remaining Stuart Cook – who played for the England Futsal team – was harshly penalised for a challenge on the halfway line. From the resulting free-kick Martin Parkes got away from his marker and headed the ball over from 12 yards out. The home side were now piling on the pressure and they had a penalty shout for handball turned down inside the last 10 minutes. As play continued a shot flew just wide of Fradd’s right hand post, crashing into the side netting.

It’s been months without football. What have you missed the most, during the close season? The general atmosphere on a matchday at grassroots level, it's second to none! How did you end up supporting Padiham? I am a Blackburn Rovers supporter, having had a season ticket for over 20 years, up until 2015 (the Venkys put paid to me continuing my support). From then, I started following my town team, then in late 2017 I was offered the role of club secretary, which I decided to take up (for my sins!!) and is the position I still hold at the club. What are the expectations for the club this campaign? After a few seasons of flirting with relegation, we now believe we have a strong squad capable of a top 10 finish, which given what has gone previously, would amount to a good season for us. Which players should Gate fans watch out for tonight? Who have you been impressed with so far? We have unearthed a few good players this pre-season: Goalkeeper Matt Hamnett is a solid as they come (hoping he has a quiet one tonight!!), Teal Amos is young tricky winger/wing back in the old fasioned mould, and local lad to boot. Willem Tomlinson is a ball playing midfielder who likes to control the tempo of a game. Having played as a professional up until this summer (Blackburn & Mansfield), he is certainly one to watch. What has been your most memorable moment supporting the club? The visit of FC United a few season ago when they had just formed. With gate of over 1000, it was not only a unique day for he club, but for the town in general. Which NWCFL grounds do you like visiting the most? Have you visited Squires Gate before? Yes I have been to Squires Gate on numerous occasions, a great little club and always a warm welcome. My favourite ground to visit is a tough one, I would say Winsford. I know its dropping to bits but at least it has some character about it. Least favourite would be Burscough. What sort of football can we expect from Padiham this evening? An organised ball playing team, with a solid back line, a creative midfield, and players who can adapt to different formations with ease. If you were picking a 5 a side team. 3 Padiham players and 2 PL legends. Who would you have? Matt Hamnett (GK), Teal Amos, Willem Tomlinson, Gianfranco Zola & Alan Shearer. If you could sign 3 Championship - League Two players on a free transfer. Who would you sign and why? Ismaila Sarr; David Brooks; Bradley Dack - attacking flair & plenty of goals. Which 3 clubs do you think will get promoted this season, and who is getting relegated? Rylands, 1874 Northwich, Bootle. Prediction for the game? Gate 1 - 2 Padiham

1992/93 In a brand new feature, we will be taking a look at some kits from the past. In True Colours, you can relive some of the best and worst strips from every Premier League campaign. Our contributors for this feature are - Russell Cox (@RussWWFC), AET Shirts (@AETShirts), The Shirt Union (@TheShirtUnion) and The Graphic Bomb (@GraphicBomb)

COLOURS

We asked them to pick 2 of their favourite kits, and 2 of their least favourite kits. Read more about which kits they chose. RUSSELL COX (@RussWWFC): The 1992/93 season might have been a 'whole new ball game as Sky V put it, but it was a distinctly old-school league - the 1st Division in all but name. That included the kits which featured on the broadcasters promotional video - all backed by the 'Alive and Kicking' soundtrack supplied by Simple Minds. These all look quite dated compared to shirts of a few years later, but there are still some memorable examples and sponsors. Not least Commodore, supplier of the brilliant Commodore Amiga, my favourite ever computer, who sponsored Chelsea, albeit without the Amiga branding of a few years later. Sadly the company went bust a few years later. The same can be said of Dutch firm Tulip Computers, much less well-known over here, but they lasted until 2009. There's not a huge amount that jumps out as memorable for me personally, but for my favourite, I'm gonna have to say Arsenal. The Gunners, had a poor season by their standards in the league, finishing only 10th with an average of just 24,000 turning up to watch their games in a 40,000 capacity stadium. They still had a rock-solid back five of David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Steve Bould, Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburn as well as the mercurial talents of Ian Wright and Paul Merson in attack. Their midfield was pretty uninspiring though, but even so, it was enough to win them both the FA Cup and League Cup, both with 2-1 wins over Sheffield Wednesday. Their home shirt was a tidy little number, a classic Adidas design with white sleeves with stripes on. It was one of a number of Arsenal kits with the iconic JVC sponsor. There were quite a few poor ones but Coventry gets the worst one for me, though Norwich came a close second. These two kits divide opinion with them both being very 1990s. The Sky Blues enjoyed an excellent start with six victories in their first eight games. They had some decent players too with Steve Ogrizovic, Phil Babb, Peter Ndlovu and Mickey Quinn but there was not s huge amount of depth and the side eventually faded, albeit finishing a decent 15th place. The strange design was made Ribero who had only been formed in 1988 and sponsored by car maker Peugeot.

THE SHIRT UNION Also contributing to our feature “True Colours” is @ShirtUnion. Founders Andy and Tom were enthusiastic about getting involved when we asked them during the build up to new campaign, so they will also be giving their best and worst shirts of the years gone by. “As we began researching and refreshing our memory of all the kits from the early Premier League era, it dawned on us that this might be slightly harder than we first anticipated. Time plays tricks on us and we view the world of yesteryear with rose tinted glasses, if you will. Almost all the shirts we look at look great because they have a retro feel - of course they do, they’re 25+ years old! Sponsors appear to look better, perhaps because printing techniques aren’t as advanced but most likely because online gambling companies haven’t yet robbed many shirt fronts either. And then you have nostalgia. Some kits hold even greater fondness because they remind us of a ‘better time’ even though at the moment, it’s not always obvious that these were pinnacles in clubs’ histories. So here we are, staring face-to-face with 44 shirts from the 22 teams who participated in the inaugural season of the Premier League. We’ll start with a couple of kits this season that we didn’t think were that great, and first up is; Wimbledon. The Dons get a special mention as being the only Premier League side to resist a shirt sponsor, but that doesn’t always equal greatness. Partnered with manufacturers Admiral, Wimbledon wore a rather plain blue shirt with yellow stripes on the shoulder. Stripes which when worn by players in over-sized baggy shirts simply drooped down the arms looked rather untidy. Oldham’s away kit was predominately a white body with red sides, and red sleeves with a white shoulder patch across the top, it all looked a little unfinished. But that wasn’t the worst offender on this kit, that goes to the collar. Umbro had a thing for laced collars in the early 90’s, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. And here it didn’t, with an absence of a fold down collar in favour of a chunkier Y neck. Moving onto a couple of kits that we do like, and this was a hard one. There were some excellent shouts from Admiral away numbers for Middlesbrough and Leeds, the pinstripes of Forest’s home and the blue flames of the Southampton away. Ribero (anyone remember them!?) went a little daring with the pattern for Coventry’s home shirt this season. The navy blue collar and navy blue ‘Peugeot’ sponsor ensured that the pattern of squares and diagonal brush strokes deservedly dominated. It’s even formed the inspiration for The Sky Blues home shirt for this season.

WHEN THEY MET Wimbledon 5-2 Oldham; 12th December 1992 Oldham 6-2 Wimbledon’; 3rd April 1993 Middlesbrough 4-1 Leeds; 22nd August 1992 Leeds 3-0 Middlesbrough; 30th Jan 1993

When we think of iconic 90’s shirts, we don’t have to think too much further than Arsenal’s away effort from this era as a Pictured right: Programme prime example. Adidas combined the unique pattern of trian- From Boro v Leeds in 1992. gles and fades, with the contrasting colours of navy blue and yellow to create a rather mad looking shirt. Throw in some red detailing and a red sponsor, and it really shouldn’t work… but it does, and it’s one of our favourites from the 90’s let alone this season

AET Shirts (@AETShirts): AET Shirts have been superb by working with the club in the closed season. We encourage our readers to check them out, as they have some great surprise packs on offer - you may even find some Squires Gate stuff in them in the near future! Their twitter account is @AETShirts, or you can follow them on Instagram @A_E_T_Shirts. TWO GOOD “Our favourite shirt from the 1992/93 season, is Manchester City’s home one which was sponsored by Brother. The inaugural Premier League season featured no fewer than 10 of 22 home teams featuring blue home shirts (that’s not including Spurs and Palace blue trim). We rate this Man City as the best. Our second favourite is Aston Villa’s home shirt. One of the first, if not the first, modern shirt to involve a nod to the past. Based on 1892-93 Villa shirt. Laces were an outstanding feature although not exclusive to Villa. Umbro also used them on Sheffield United home, Oldham Athletic and Chelsea Away shirts. WHEN THEY MET Manchester City 1-1 Aston Villa; Saturday 19th December 1992. Aston Villa 3-1 Manchester City; Saturday 18th April 1993. TWO BAD “I think the QPR home shirt has to be on the list for our worst kit. The sponsor lets them down, and it’s the wrong shade of blue. No QPR shirt should have a collar. Criminal. Our second choice for worst kit is the Chelsea away kit. The lace feature again pops up but this is pure pyjamas. Might have worked better with blue home shorts!” WHEN THEY MET Chelsea 1-0 QPR; 29th August 1992. QPR 1-1 Chelsea; 27th January 1993. FINAL STANDINGS QPR finished the season in 5th, and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City in the 4th Round. Players like Les Ferdinand, Gary Penrice and Ian Holloway all featured in Rangers’ best ever campaign. Chelsea on the other hand finished 11th, and were knocked out the FA Cup in the 3rd round but made the League Cup United win the inaugrial Premier League campaign, after waiting 26 years for a league title. Aston Villa, Blackburn and Norwich finished off the top four. Ryan Giggs won young player of the year while Sir Alex Ferguson won the manager of the year award. The United side had the likes of Paul Ince, Gary Pallister and Mark Hughes too! If you want to send us your favourite kits from the 1992/93 season, get involved on Twitter: @squiresgatefc

THE GRAPHIC BOMB @GraphicBomb The Graphic Bomb were the creators of our fantastic retro programme cover for the 2020/21 season. They agreed to contribute to our shirt feature too. TWO GOOD Norwich (H) I grew up seeing this shirt about a fair bit on local east Anglia tv reports. I even had this in subutteo men form even though I’m not a Norwich fan. The pattern is crazy but everything works with it. I was taken to a Norwich game the next season (two seasons in one kit imagine!) and it looked just as good in the flesh. The sponsor doesn’t ruin things either which I can be annoying when a shirts design is so good. The away shirt for Norwich that season too with that purple/white an under the radar classic. Man City (A) I love a pinstripe - I nearly chose Forest’s kit - but I prefer the colours on this one. The ‘brother’ sponsor logo is great and the colours sit perfectly with the rest of the purple shirt. The Umbro badge and numbers on the back being yellow/ gold hit all the right notes. TWO BAD Leeds (A) / Middlesboro (A) Same template and both colourways look bad. It's weird as I do like garish patterns usually but this looks like an old Atari has spewed this up. Poppers on the collars as well on the Middlesboro one, no thanks! Man Utd (A) There were other shirts in this season that were a bit safe and maybe therefore probably should be in the bottom ‘two worst’. But I really didn’t like the gigantic United crest in the background of this away shirt. The shorts were the same pattern, paired with blue socks completing the horrible wall of blue. Didn’t stop them from winning the league though did it! WHEN THEY MET Man City 3-1 Norwich City; 26th August Norwich City 2-1 Man City; 20th February

Norwich started the season very well, picking up wins against Arsenal and Chelsea, before eventually losing to Manchester City four games in. It was always going to be a tough ask, as they had not won there since 1964. But in the reverse fixture in February, the canaries picked up their first win against City in nearly 30 years, and this came courtesy of two goals in as many minutes. The controversial kit has got a good and a bad vote this week. Get involved with the conversation and let us know what your favourite shirts of the 1992/93 season were! We will be continuing our True Colours feature in our home game against Litherland REMYCA on the 17th October.

THE BEST FOOTBALL

BOOKS @footybookreviews talks about some of the must read football books During lockdown, I found myself reading a lot of football books so when it came to putting together the 2020/21 programme, I got in touch with @footybookreviews on Twitter and asked if they would give us their 20 MUST READ football books. So here’s an article for those who love to get stuck into those sort of books! Lost in France – The Remarkable Life and Death of Leigh Roose, Football’s First Superstar by Spencer Vignes In the modern age football feels like it is at saturation point in terms of coverage. Every detail about a player, manager or club is scrutinised to an infinite degree, so much so that nothing feels new, fresh or indeed inspiring. Therefore, it was a joy to read this book by Spencer Vignes. Here is a story from a very different age, a game in which amateur players still had a place alongside professionals, when football itself looked different to that we watch today and a world unknowingly stumbling towards the First World War.

It is said that goalkeepers are born not made and have a bravery that outfield players don’t possess. Roose was undoubtedly was one such case, in an era when goalkeepers were not afforded the protection they have today.

This is the story of a man described by the author as, “playboy, soldier, scholar and maverick”, and one that had been lost in the annals of time, until now. The book asserts However, he was not just brave on the that Roose was, “football’s first genuine superstar”, and on field of play and in the later part of the book the author skilfully puts together the the evidence presented, it is difficult to argue otherwise. story surrounding Roose’s service and The reader is treated to tales of Roose’s exploits on and subsequent decoration in action during off-the-pitch, where his popularity with the crowds as a the First World War. player, was matched by that with women up and down the This book maybe only be 192 pages long, country, including a dalliance with the famous music hall but it is an absorbing story of a larger than star, Marie Lloyd. life character and innovator in the football However, to classify Roose as merely a showman and world. HALB VIER FANZINE A FANZINE ON GERMAN FOOTBALL It’s probably not the best place to make this confession but I was never one for football programmes (shock, horror I hear you say), sure I bought one at most games I attended, but it was soon consigned to the recycling bin and I always enjoyed reading my team (Everton) fanzines more, in any case.

ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE? If you enjoyed reading this, be sure to check out @halbvierUK on Twitter, and find out how you can buy one of their fanzines. There has currently been 3 issues, and the content is fantastic. The latest issue #3 includes the evolution of Bayern Munich’s crest, how a Venezuelan superstar made his mark on the Bundesliga and a story on Leipzig! The issues are priced at £3 for a digital copy or £5 for a paper copy which is great value for the content of the fanzine.

Over the past few years I became immersed in football printed publications such as The Blizzard, These Football Times and Glory, which in the main write about historical and cultural aspects of the game, not seen elsewhere. Coupled this with the fact that I also found myself going to watch games in Germany two or three times a season, becoming more disillusioned every season with Premier League football, and eventually the two interests coincided, as there was no printed publication, in English, for fans of German football, I decided to start one myself. Halb Vier, which loosely translates as half to four, is the traditional kick off time for German football on Saturday afternoon, first appeared in March of this year. Starting as a 56 page publication where I wrote most of the articles myself and called in a few favours. A few sleepless nights wondering what the reaction would and would anybody buy it, it sold out in a week. So much so that when I was featured in Der Spiegel magazine and got over 2,000 hits on the website over a weekend, I had no more copies to sell….I could have cried that night. The first 3 issues have sold out and Issue 4, when it’s published in November, will be up to 80 pages, with 20 different people writing for the magazine. What I thought would be read by two man and a dog, now sells online across Europe and North America. The ethos of Halb Vier is not so much about the action on the pitch but rather the joys of German football, be it the stadiums, the fans or the beer. We try not to write about the top Bundesliga teams as there’s plenty of coverage of them elsewhere in the English media, but feature the lower league teams who may not be so well known. In fact our post popular story so far has been on Borrussia Neunkirchen, a sixth tier German club, and their wonderfully decrepit Ellenfeld Stadion. It’s great when we get messages from intrepid Groundhoppers saying that when the Geisterspiel (ghost games) finish that’s the first stadium on their list to visit. The lockdown came into effect the week after the first issue was published and the trips to Germany stopped albeit temporarily. Luckily restrictions have been relaxed recently and whilst the top tier clubs may not be letting in supporters (or at least those who live in foreign countries) this is not so the case in the lower leagues, where crowds of up to 1,000 are allowed in the 4th tier Regionaliga. So when Squires Gate are kicking off against Padiham, I will be on my way back from Berlin, having enjoyed a triple header of games, eaten many a Bratwurst and drunk far too many pints of Berliner Weisse.

A look at two notable games, previously played on today’s date.

6th October England 2-2 Greece David Beckham sent England to the 2002 World Cup finals in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford. Sven Goran Eriksson's team were trailing Greece 2-1 deep into injury time and looked destined for a difficult play-off against Ukraine. But Beckham, having failed with five previous long-range free kicks, finally secured qualification for Japan and Korea with a virtuoso goal in the 93rd minute. It was an amazing climax to a nail-biting final qualifying game in which England's character had been tested to the limit. Eriksson's most testing week as England boss looked like finishing on the worst possible note until Beckham's dramatic late contribution.

6th October Celtic 3-3 Rangers It was Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton that saved the blushes of Celtic goalkeeper Rab Douglas as the first old firm clash of the season ended in a thrilling draw. On a day that a young Mikel Arteta started for Rangers; the Frenchman gave them an early lead against their bitter rivals. A Henrik Larsson double put the hosts in front, after Rangers failed to clear their lines. But it was a Douglas error which allowed Ronald De Boer to equalise. Rangers were still in shock after they were knocked out of the UEFA Cup at the hands of Viktoria Zizkov after 120 minutes, but Celtic boss Martin O’Neill had his side coming into the game on the back of a 10-1 demolition of Lithuanian side Suduva.

England: Martyn, Gary Neville, Ferdinand, Keown, Ashley Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, Barmby, Fowler, Heskey.

With 15 minutes remaining, Rangers took the lead again, when Douglas spilled a low drive from Numan and Arveladze forced the ball home off the shin of Ulrik Laursen.

Subs: Southgate, Wright, Carragher, Murphy, McManaman, Sheringham, Andy Cole.

Just two minutes later, the hoops were level again. Thompson’s free kick was headed back
