The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “IT’S A GAME OF FOOTBALL AND ONE WE WANT TO WIN. WE’VE BEEN KNOCKED OUT OF THE BOTH THE FA CUP AND FA VASE AT THE FIRST ATTEMPT” Tonight we welcome Radcliffe in the Lancashire Cup. Last years beaten finalists will be looking to go one further this year. They are a strong side and we'll have to be at our best to stop them. It was nice to get our first win of the season in midweek. It's been coming for a few weeks and performances have been gradually improving. There's still plenty of work to do but the more we play together the better we're becoming and that's a good thing. Consistency is key for me and the work rate and desire we showed on Wednesday needs to be replicated week in week out and that starts tonight. It's a game of football and one we want to win. We've been knocked out of both the Fa Cup and FA Vase at the first attempt and that's not good enough. Let hope we see a great game of football and SGFC in the hat for the next round.

Friday 15th September // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance 103 The game started at a frantic pace with both teams looking evenly matched. Gates first chance of the game came from Jack Williams, he created space but fired over the bar. Widnes then came down the other end but dragged their shot wide in what was a clear example of how the game was turning out. It would be Gate that would open the scoring in the game after 27 minutes. Mark Buchans shot was blocked before the ball fell to Dean Ing who tapped in past the Widnes keeper. Gate would go onto, for the first time this season keep their lead upto half time. Half Time: Squires Gate 1 Widnes 0

The visitors would equalise after 52 minutes. Ben Fletcher struggling to keep hold of the ball and Widnes pounced to tap into the net. Widnes would then double their lead on 64 minutes. Ben Fletcher saving the initial shot but he couldn't keep hold of the ball, Widnes on hand to fire in the loose ball. Gate themselves had some great chances to equalise the game but just couldn't find that slice of luck. Nick Greenall headed over after 66 minutes after a good corner in from Mark Buchan. The last chance of the game fell to Jack Williams. From in his own half he tried a speculative effort that clipped the bar a shot which summed up Gate's performance.

0 1 SQUIRES GATE

Wednesday 20th September // WEC Stadium // Attendance Squires Gate made the perfect start to a crucial away HALF TIME: AFC Darwen 0-1 Squires Gate game at AFC Darwen on Wednesday night when they took the lead after a minute. Form man Dean Ing was alive after the first minute of the game to glance a header past the keeper from Mike Halls freekick. The midfielders third goal in three games.Dave Rossall had to be aware after 13 minutes when he superbly denied Darwen. Darwen attacking down the right sent in a superb cross but Rossall was there to slide in and clear. Manager Danny Penswick had the chance to double Gate's lead after 31 minutes. Mark Buchan flicking the ball onto Paul Carroll who crossed for the manager but he headed wide. Ben Fletcher then made an easy save on 35 minutes when he kept hold of a strike from the edge of the box. As the first half came to a close it was the home side who started to build the momentum. Mike Hall cleared the ball off the line from a Darwen cross to end the first half.

Gate were forced into an early change at the start of the second half when Jake Darnell went off injured with his hamstringJordan O'Mahoney replaced him in a back line reshuffle. Gate had a great chance to double their lead after 52 minutes when Dean Ing and Jack Williams linked up well. Ing played a clever ball round the corner to find the run of Williams but his shot was fired wide. Jack Williams was then flagged offside in what looked a close decision on 54 minutes. Both Dave Rossall and Jordan O'Mahoney had to be alert on 72 minutes to block Bobby Langords shot, the Corner coming to nothing for the home side. Both Ben Fletcher and Paul Carroll then pulled off similar heroics with ten minutes to go. First Fletcher saved well before Carroll then blocked a shot twice.

THE BOSS Jon Macken The Club are delighted to announce the appointment of former Man City and Preston North End striker Jonathan Macken as First Team Manager. Macken, who is also a coach at Oldham Athletic, was a £5m signing for Manchester City in 2002 and brings with him a wealth of experience and contacts in the game from all levels after playing his way down through the divisions towards the end of his playing days. Chairman Paul Hilton said "For the Club to be able to attract a Manager of such high profile is a real coup, it was clear to us when we met Jon that he shares the ambition and drive to succeed that we the Board do and is a genuine football man. He is a local lad, and knows this League through his time with Bamber Bridge."

BREIF HISTORY The 2015–16 season was a history defining season off the field for the boro. Events on it were not exactly dull either. At the beginning of the season it was decided that the supporters committee that was tasked to run the club was no longer required and the owner Bernard Manning would look to find new management for the club but would run the club in the meantime. August started Poorly for Boro 5 straight defeats including a cup shock defeat away at AFC Liverpool of the North West Counties in the FA Cup in which boro led 2–0 and threw the game away at the death. A huge shock for the club and worries of financial implications dominated the talk of the next few weeks. September started with again poorly a 4–1 reverse at Harrogate Railway including a red card, which would be a common theme through the season as poor discipline cost boro points in games as well as finances. But boro started to finally win games, a 1–0 win away at Prescot Cables and a 4–0 home win against Ossett Town among the highlights.

October was a mixed bag for boro they started to hit form and win games but when they lost they lost heavily. Fine wins over Droylsden and Witton Albion in the FA Trophy as well as a 5–0 win at New Mills were overshadowed by thrashings against Northwich and Spennymoor. Boro also won 3–1 at National League North Side Curzon Ashton in the Manchester Cup, just highlighting the inconsistency of Boro in October. The New Year rang in the Changes at Stainton Park. Chairman Bernard Manning announced his resignation after 25 years with the club with the view to finding a successor, something which took months to happen but was resolved by the end of the season. On the field inconsistent Boro were suffering from a mixture of Bad Luck in some games, and poor discipline in others. Highlights included a 5–1 Hammering of Ashton United in the Manchester Cup Quarter Finals in January. February Proved to be an explosive month on and off the field. Boro re-signed club legend Jody Banim but Boro could not find a win no matter how hard they tried. A loss in the semi final of the Manchester Cup by Stalybridge again showing the frustration of almost. But the highlight of the month was a vital 2– 1 win at Ossett Town. A bad tempered match another red card but boro sensationally got a 92nd-minute winner from Steve Foster to earn 3 vital points at the foot of the table. This though was as good as it got. A 6–1 thrashing at home to Clitheroe and a 1–0 loss at Scarborough proved the end for Danny Johnson who resigned as manager immediately after the game, but stayed on until the end of the season to keep boro safe. Boro then went on a great run to secure survival, fantastic wins over Prescot, Ossett Albion and Farsley Celtic and a comeback from 3–0 down at Droylsden to draw was enough to secure early safety from Relegation. Boro's season ended with a 4–0 win over New Mills and a hat trick from Jody Banim and a win over Ossett Albion. The final game was a 2–1 loss at Farsley Celtic.

LAST TIME OUT

2 1 Torpey 17og,Welsh(pen) 90 OSSETT ALBION

RADCLIFFE BOORUGH Hooper 62

Saturday 25 September /The Evo-Stick North// Attendance 121 The first half started with ossett having all the chances restricting boro to half chances with a defensive display hitting boro on the counter attack. Early chances for the hosts with Jason Price with the best of what was on offer hitting the post on the 13th minute and somehow bounced out. Ossett Albion finally had their goal on the 15th minute, a free kick towards the right of goal from about 20yards out was crossed in. The Boro failed to clear the ball and Darren Torpey deflected the ball into his own net past a helpless Ryan Jones. Boro did have two other Chances in the first half with Ben Jago testing the keeper with a free kick on the edge of the box and Stan Zhekov on the stroke of half time Boro's only real opportunities of the half. The hosts were well deserving of their lead at the break.

Half Time Score: Ossett Albion 1-0 Radcliffe

In the second half boro came alive, creating many an opportunity, chasing every ball and going in for every tackle. Carl Peers shot from distance whistled past the post and the Boro finally got a well deserved goal on 61mins James Hooper with a drive into the bottom corner from 20 yards out to get a well deserved equaliser. More chances were being created boro just couldn't find the second goal to win the 3 points. Akil Greer shot from distance to test the keeper with a shot going into the bottom corner, and Stavros Tserpes with a similar effort to test the Ossett Albion Keeper. Boro continued to press high and keep forward. 4 minutes of added time were added but in the 3rd minute of additional time Ossett Albion were gifted an opportunity to win the game which was taken. Torpey back pass to Jones in goal did not have enough pace to go back to the Boro keeper, Ossett Albion's Andy Welsh latched into the ball and attempted to round Jones who brought him down. Penalty to Ossett Albion in the 3rd additional minute to undo all the great work of the second half from the Boro. Welsh scored the penalty to the delight of the home fans for a much needed

VIEW FROM AWAY END

Matthew Jones

This week we interviewed Radcliffe Borough, Matthew Jones where we found what he wanted from the season for Radcliffe Borough and his memorable game at Radcliffe. What are your expectations for the the new season after last sea- which have created a bit of a little rivalry shall we say. Also Colne who I thought was the best side I saw us play last season home and away terrific son? For me personally progress. We've made great strides off the field and now would be great to see the result of that on it. After finishing just above the relegation zone for the last few seasons I'd take a boring mid table position, but we don't do boring mid table obscurity we always have to have drama at either end of the table! But progress in league position from last and winning a cup competition would be a great season.

experienced physical side gave us 2 great games.

Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Excuse my igronance but I don't know any!

Fans from other club don't know that Radcliffe?

This season will been different to last because?

One of our former players Jody Banim still holds a national record with 14 goals in consecutive games from 2003.

A new hope! And all of our dreams and expectations come true.....hopefully!

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

Who has been ur most memorable moment of all time at Radcliffe?

Only 3? David De Gea, Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero. Three best players in the premier league right now one to keep the goals out, Been around the club for the last 20 Years, one way or another and there one to win the ball and create chances and one to bag 30+ goals a has been so many wonderful memories and moments. But I'm going to go season. for one from last season in the Lancashire Cup and finally winning in the Semi Final at Leyland. Something we've been trying for so so long to get through something like 5-6 Visits in the last decade with no success. It was such a great moment for the supporters as we finally broke a curse and reached The Cup Final after so many attempts and so many bitterly cold nights at The County Ground watching us lose out yet again made it all worth it for that moment of joy. But we don't need to talk about the actual Final from last season that still hurts...

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? I'm sure we have years ago in a Cup Competition! Can't remember the score. Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there?

We haven't been to Wembley Yet! Wouldn't matter either way What teams are you looking forward to going up against this sea- what the scenario is we're there in a Cup Final at Wembley! son? Your most underrated player is? Always like the games against the Yorkshire Teams, and games against the Now I'm not going to tell you that am I? Manchester Teams always physical and decent games usually too. I Always look out for the new teams too that come into the division. But really it's Gate should keep eye out on what player from Radcliffe South Shields that I'm looking forward too. Title favourites, Big Crowds will Or that one haha make for a great day out going up there.

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season?

The best away fan are?

Always the new ones I've not been to before, South Shields is new to our league and Scarborough have a new ground of course it's always the newest ones and planning an away day to somewhere we've not been before is always good

Best ones from last season was Prescot Cables came down in decent numbers didn't shut up for 90mins and made funny clean songs. All good fun and banter.

What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last season? Atherton Collieries came into our league this year and we've had some fantastic battles with them in Cup Competitions over the last few years

Prediction for today game? A Radcliffe win. 3-1

LAST TIME IN THE LANCASHIRE CUP

GATE

CHORLEY

2

Tuesday 8th November 2016 Lancashire Cup

Squires Gate hosted Vanarama North high fliers Chorley on Tuesday night who had won the competition 17 times and were the holders this time round. Both teams started the game fairly evenly with Gate being flagged offside early on through Dawson. Gate midfielder Mike Hall then pulled off a last ditch tackle down the other end to deny a clear scoring chance. Chorley were having the majority of possession in the first half and really should have scored after 13 minutes. Striker Marcus Carver walking away with his head in his hands as he fired wide of the goal with a sliced shot. Brett Dawson did well to close down the keeper on 26 minutes to force a mistake. Unfortunately for Gate he couldn't release the odd quick enough and Chorley cleared the ball. Although Chorley had plenty of possession, Gate really limited them to what they could create. Chorley had a soft penalty appeal turned down just before the half time break. The right back went down under Ben Seear's challenger but the referee waved away the appeals Gate started the second half and had a couple of half chances on the break. Chorley got themselves in early on aswell again down the left hand side but Dave Rossall did well to cut out the ball at the near post. The follow up corner ended up in Ben Fletchers arms. Jamie Gibson sparked life into Gate on 60 minutes when he went on a mazy run. He jinked in and out of the Chorley defence but his ball through to Dawson was flagged for offside. The turning point came on 66 minutes when Gate opened the scoring. A corner sent in by Joe Noblet found the head of Ryan Riley who powered his header past Caunce to give Gate the lead! Unfortunately though Chorley hit back nearly straight from kick off. The ball scrambled in by defender Daniel Cowan after Gate failed to clear their lines. Gates night would get worse with 11 minutes left to play Chorley added a second. A corner ball fired into the back post found Adam Roscoe who smashed the ball in. Although Gate bought both Ryan Tanser and Ric Seear on to try and grab another goal Chorley saw the game out and go through to the next round.

THE BIG INTERVIEW Jack Williams has been a constant starter for Gate this season so far. We interviewed What teams are you looking forward to facing this season?

What is your goal target for the season ?

Personally I'm looking forward to playing the three teams that got promoted last season, this is because I obviously played them last year and I want to see which ones have improved

My personal goal target for the season is between 15-20 if it is any less then I would be disappointed

Which teams do you think will be tough season? I think every team in the league will be tough whoever we face will want to win so each team we come up against will be competitive What encouraged you to start playing football?

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with. Who would you pick and why? 3 players I would pick to alongside would be Payet, Lanzini and Rooney. This is a mix but the first two payers are creative players who I loved watching and still do and of course they played for West Ham and Rooney because he's an England legend who I admire and loved to watch in his prime.

I started playing from a young age and ever since then I've always wanted to play football like any other lad growing up really it's someWhat the first thing you do before any match? thing I'm passionate about I don't really do anything when I first get to the ground. Who was your footballing idol as a kid? What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch I never really had an idol growing up I just loved watching football prior to kick off? and watching how different players play The last thing I do though is put on my left boot and I also have to If you weren't a striker, which other position would you love to stay seated till everyone has got up. Yeah this is a weird one but I play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your make sure I concentrate on what I want to do in a game and try to time? visualise situations in a match. If I weren't a striker I believe I'd play central midfield, growing up I What can you do on the pitch when you know we losing or not played midfield until the age of 14 where I then moved forward and in good form? became I striker If we are loosing or we aren't in good form the thing I can do is score What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the which is the main thing in a game game? What is the morale in the dressing room like, after only winning Within a game the biggest challenges for me is scoring, people may once in our first 5 games? say it's battling against centre backs who are most of the time are twice the size of me but for me it isn't the hardest is scoring, this is The dressing room morale is down this is because everyone in the down to the fact that in a game you might only get 1 or two chance dressing rooms a winner and obviously at the minute things aren't to score so you have to take them when the opportunity comes so if going our way and we aren't getting much look but we will always your not ready then that chance will pass you by. keep fighting until we are safe within the league. If you could pick one Premier League side for Squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why?

If you could play against any European club, who would you want to face?

This would be West Ham united, this is the team I support and have grown up supporting.

This would be Barcelona just so I could say I've played against Messi as he is the best

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid?

player in the world

It was a West Ham game at Upton Park but if I'm honest with you I have no idea who we was playing as I went to many of games when I was younger.

Prediction for today's game?

Favourite ground you have ever played at? I have a few of these I've played at Coventry, Ipswich, Fleetwood but the best was probably Ipswich for my county team a few years ago.

I hate doing predictions but if I have to pick then it would be a Squires Gate win

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE SAN EUROPEAN OFF THE SIRO CUP SEESKICKS ACTION

1926 1955

On 19 September 1926, Milan and Inter inaugurated the San Siro with a friendly. Inter won, 3-6. Although the two teams share the stadium now, it originally belonged to Milan. The idea for the new stadium came from club president Piero Pirelli, who also funded the 5 million lire construction cost. Contrary to the multi-use model of most Italian grounds at the time, architect Ulisse Stacchini rejected the inclusion of a track surrounding the pitch in order to create a more intimate setting for the stadium's capacity crowd of 35,000.Named the New San Siro Football Stadium after the district in which it is located, the new stadium did not have an auspicious start for Milan, as they lost that first match to Inter, 3-6, then lost their first league match there as well. The club sold the stadium to the city of Milan in 1935, but the Rossoneri remained the sole occupant until 1947, when Inter became joint tenants. In 1980, it was offiicially renamed after Milan and Inter star Giuseppe Meazza, but it is still commonly referred to as the San Siro. It has since

LIVERPOOL TAKES TEN

1986

On 23 September 1986, Liverpool matched a League Cup record, beating Fulham 10-0 in the first leg of their second round meeting.

The defending league champions, Liverpool had dominated the competition over the previous years, winning it four straight times between 1981 and 1984. They were looking to return to those winning ways after suffering a third-round loss to Tottenham in the 1984-95 season and elimination by Queens Park Rangers in the 1985-86 semifinals. They entered the 1986-87 tournament in the second round, where they hosted Fulham at Anfield for the first leg. The match was played on a Tuesday, drawing a small crowd of only 13,498. Those that turned up, however, were treated to a scoring explosion. Ian Rush provided the first in just the eight minute, followed by goals from John Wark (10', 63'), Ronnie Whelan (28'), Steve McMahon (44', 66', 71', 79'), and another from Rush (76').Steve Nicol provided the final goal in the 83rd minute to set the final margin at 10-0, matching the record for the highest single-game margin of victory in the League Cup, set by West Ham's win over Bury by the same score in 1983.Liverpool went on to win the second leg 203 and kept up their level of play to advance all the way to the final before falling to Arsenal 2-1.

BARCA’S NEW CAMP

On 24 September 1957, Barcelona inaugurated the Camp Nou with a 4-2 win over Legia Warsaw in a friendly. Built over a period of three and half years at a cost of 288 million pesetas, the stadium's original name was Estadi del FC Barcelona, but it has been known from the beginning as Camp Nou ("New Ground") (the club officially adopted that name in 2000). For the inauguration, Barcelona hosted a crowd of over 90,000 for the friendly Legia Warsaw. Several dignitaries attended, including the Archbishop of Barcelona, who blessed the new stadium. A choir then performed the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah. It took only eleven minutes for the home side to pull ahead, with striker Eulogio MartĂnez scoring the first goal. Barcelona got additional goals from Tejada, Sampedro, and Evaristo to win 4-2. Since then, the stadium's capacity has increased to over
