The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “THERE MORE WE PLAY TOGETHER THE BETTER WE’LL BECOME AND IM EXCITED FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS BRINGS ” Today we welcome high flying Runcorn Linnets to the Brian Addison Stadium. There always a team who aims to be up there challenging and with the team Ello has built you can be sure they'll be in and around it come the end of the season. The have a strong spine and always know how to score goals. I'm really pleased with our recent performances but I still know we have a lot more to give. The more we play together the better we'll become and I'm excited for what the next few weeks bring. Runcorn may be favourites and sitting second in the league but if we apply ourselves as we should I see no reason why we can't cause an upset today. Our results against the top sides last year were good and I'm hoping today can kick start a good run of form. Up the Gat

Saturday 25th September // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance 90 The visitors started off lively with a clear intention to keep the ball, being shown. They went close after nine minutes when the number 11 clipped the post from outside the box. Jack Williams then went close for Gate down the other end but his shot was saved with Radcliffe clearing the corner. On 19 minutes Williams again had a great chance after the returning Gal Pett headed into his path. Unfortunately for Gate though, the front man fired wide. The visitors would take the lead after 21 minutes. Akik Greir firing the ball past Fletcher from the edge of the box after the ball fell to him. The Gate players had claims for a handball turned away on the 30 minute mark when Jake Higham was stopped in the box. He burst into the box with the ball seeming to be stopped by the Radcliffe man, but the referee waved away the protests. Radcliffe then showed Gates weaknesses on 36 minutes when they doubled the lead. Gate not closing down quick enough allowed Radcliffe to come from their own half to Gates box. The ball eventually found its way to the penalty spot where Brendan Glackin fired past Fletcher. Gary Pett then had Gate’s last chance of the first half from a freekick. The front man connected with the freekick but could only find the keepers arms.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 0-2 Radcliffe

Gate were hampered at half time by the news that keeper Ben Fletcher had picked up a knock and was unable to continue. Up step captain and midfielder Mike Hall to take the gloves having previously done so last season in Gates win at Bootle. The visitors would start the second half the better side and added another after two minutes. Glackin again in the right place to spot past Hall after Radcliffe broke from Gates corner. Gate would grab a deserved goal back just after the hour mark. Sub Moxon’s cross finding its way to Jack Williams in the six yard box for him to fire in. Mike Hall had to be alert in goal on 67 minutes when he saved from a long range Radcliffe effort to keep Gate in the game. That save would spur Gate on to score a second on the 70 minute mark. Jordan O’Mahoney winning the ball and driving forward before chipping the ball over the defender into the path of Pett. Pett then took one touch before firing into the far side of the goal, a strike no keeper would save. From their it was all Gate for he last 20 minutes with Radcliffe pinned back in their own half and defending. Tarren Moxon has the chance to equalise for Gate late on when he curled a first time shot just wide of the post in the 84th minute. Pett then had a chance from a corner late on, but his header went over the bar! The loss means Gate exit the cup for the second year running but should be proud of their performance, especially the second half

LAST TEN SEASONS:

THE BOSS

MICHAEL ELLISON . Having retired from playing as our club captain at the end of 2016-17 season, with more than 200 Runcorn appearances under his belt, Michael was appointed as Linnets manager in July 2016.

This is his first management position and a role he has taken to with typical vigour and enthusiam while carrying out major rebuilding. As a player, he joined Winsford United in September 2010 and later moved to Runcorn Linnets in 2011, anchoring the midfield to great effect and chipping in with the the odd goal. His inaugural effort at Abbey Hey prompted scenes of wild celebration on the terraces and a new catchphrase "I was there when Ello scored". Throughout his time as a player at The Millbank Linnets Stadium, Michael proved a great example to younger members of the squad and was also instrumental in helping the club through league and cup successes. He now continues to be an inspiration in the dressing room and on the touchline. The popular figure was awarded the Players' Player and Supporters Club Player Of The Year awards in 2012-2013 season.

BREIF HISTORY The club was formed on 28 April 2006 as a replacement for the town's previous club, Runcorn F.C. Halton, which had resigned from the Northern Premier League due to financial difficulties. The original Runcorn club's biggest success had been winning the 1981–82 Alliance Premier League title, although they failed to reach the Football League as the league's members had voted against them joining. The club is run by the Supporters Trust, which had been set up as "The Linnets Independent Supporters Trust", and the new club joined two levels further down the football pyramid, in the North West Counties Football League Division Two, having been accepted into the league on 17 June. A groundshare with Witton Albion was arranged at the start of the 2006–07 season, until a suitable ground could be found in Runcorn. This was achieved in 2010, when the club moved into a newly built ground on Murdishaw Avenue and named it the Millbank Linnets Stadium as part of a three-year sponsorship deal. Steve Carragher who had played for and managed Runcorn FC Halton, joined the club as manager, with Mark Philips as his assistant player-manager. Several players from the old club also joined the Linnets.[citation needed] Their first game was a 4–0 away win against Ashton Town, followed by a 5–0 victory at home to Castleton Gabriels. Runcorn finished their inaugural season as runners-up, losing out on the league title to Winsford United on goal difference, and won promotion to the First Division. Thomas Lamb finished the season as top scorer, with 22 goals in all competitions.[citation needed] In the 2007–08 season, Linnets spent most of their time in mid-table. They won their first ever FA Vase game against Daisy Hill, before losing to Salford City in the First round. After a string of poor results, the board decided that a change of management was needed and Steve Wilkes was appointed as manager in January 2008. They finished the season 12th out of 20 clubs. During the close season, the league was restructured with the First Division becoming the Premier Division. In the 2008–09 season Linnets entered the FA Cup for the first time, winning their first game 3–2 at home to Rossington Main on 17 August 2008. In the next round they lost 4–0 to Curzon Ashton on 30 August.[2] Recently the club have announced a youth team in every age group up to the under 16s. In 2011–12 they are the only team from the NWCFL to get to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

Q&A WITH MARK HOUGHTON This week we Interviewed Runcorn Linnets Player Mark Houghton, we found about his time at Linnets. We also found out what his goal target is for the season about football in general. what teams are you looking forward to facing this season?

What is your goal target for the season ?

I always look forward to the Runcorn derby's. Widnes also as alot of ex players and management that I have played and been managed under are with them,so it will be nice to see some old faces again.

I scored 23 goals last season so to replicate that and better it would be great.

What has been your most memorable game for Linnets? Winning and scoring in the challenge cup a few seasons ago against Formby.

Have you ever played against Gate it so what was the score and did you score?

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why? Michael Owen as he was my role model growing up. Lionel Messi as he's the best footballer I have ever seen in the world. Steven Gerrard. As a Liverpool supporter he single handedly kept them competitive in troubling times and has been such an influential figure for the club.

I have played many games against Gate over the years so cant really remember scores, however I do remember scoring a screamer in the Fa Vase What the first thing you do before any match? a few seasons ago at the Millbank. Cereal and a cup of tea and then prepare right physically and mentally.

Which teams do you think will be tought season?

This season has alot more teams challenging for the league than ever. There are no easy games in this league.

What encouraged you to start playing football? Watching it from a very early age on the TV and also watching my older brother.

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Shake the hands of my team mates and management. What European team who u loved for Linnets to go up against and why Borussia Dortmund , just for the atmosphere alone.

Who was your footballing idol as a kid?

Prediction for today's game?

Michael Owen when he was at Liverpool.

Have to go with a Linnets win.

which other position would you love to play in? Ive never really been interested in any other positions other than being a striker. If I had to choose though it would be a Right back.

Have you ever played in other positions during your time at Linnets? Many other positions, right back, left wing back, across the midfield, behind the front two and as a striker.

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game? Winning a league!

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? It would have been at Southport FC when they played in the old Vauxhall Conference.

Favourite ground you have ever played at? Chester FC, only because we won as big underdogs.

LAST TIME OUT AFC DARWEN

RUNCORN LINNETS

Wednesday 27th September // WEC Anchor Stadium // Attendance They were rewarded as Mitch Bryant, on a rare start, scored what would the decisive goal midway through the first half. The Linnets made five changes from their last two outings with Antony Hickey, Tom Hardwick, Kieran Nolan and Bryant all reclaiming outfield positions. Meanwhile Matt Holmes, having been re-signed earlier in the day after the briefest of stints with Northwich Victoria, took over from unavailable goalkeeper Terry Smith. Hickey was, however, forced off in the first half after taking a couple of heavy knocks while Nolan, an injury absentee for the last couple of weeks, lasted only until half-time. As well as rain, which made it difficult for players to keep their feet from a relatively early stage, the teams also had to contend with a difficult wind. When it was in their favour before the break, the Linnets could quite easily have scored a couple more than the goal they managed. They were thwarted by some excellent saves from Macauley Scott, including a splendid double stop at the expense of Hickey and Stuart Wellstead.Only a difficult bounce had prevented the latter from being in complete control of his shot but it was a worthy effort from the in-form striker all the same and a good reaction by the home 'keeper. The 24th-minute goal which counted followed the quickest of Runcorn counter attacks from the edge of their own box, led by the fleet footed Paul Shanley. It culminated in Hickey driving the ball across goal from the right of the box for Bryant to bundle it home, despite the attempts of an on-theline defender to keep it out at the left post.Fresh from their weekend victory over Glasshoughton in thd FA Vase, AFC Darwen were anything but a push over yet they struggled in the opening 45 to create anything of substance in the final third. In open play at least, that trend largely continued in the second half as a Runcorn defence, missing (the injured) Aaron Morris for the first time since his arrival at the start of last season, invariably got men on the cover or bodies in the 'Keeper Holmes, getting his first Linnets outing of the campaign at the start of his second spell, was typically reliable and produced one superb blocking save at close quarters. It was a different story from AFC Darwen at set-pieces from which the big outfit posed a considerable threat. Fortunately for Linnets, the hosts had their radar switched off when it came to finishing but it was very difficult to direct headers accurately on this kind of night. With such a slender lead, the big fear in the closing stages was that one error could cost Runcorn big time. Mistakes were inevitable but thankfully always rectified - with skipper Kyle Hamid taking on greater responsibility in front of the defence once Nolan had exited. Darwen had been reduced to 10 men from the 47th minute, when their right full back Gary Brown was sent off for a second cautionable foul. He had been carded in the first half for clattering into the back ohanley. With the exit of his closest opponent, Shanley had potential licence to run amok but curiously saw little further action. AFC Darwen, however, were further galvanised by the dismissal and in time-honoured fashion, appeared to have the extra man at times. It wasn't the kind of occasion when Runcorn could take any real advantage. They could have made the final minutes less anxious. But wrong options meant further scoring opportunities were missed late on. There was one incident, comical in retrospect, when the home 'keeper somehow let the ball go past him and then engaged in a foot race back towards goal - although it resembled one played out on ice skates! Both 'keeper and Linnets sub Mark Houghton lost their footing, slithering towards the goal line where the 'keeper just about managed to gain possession on his line. In these conditions, it was all about the result and the victory was much more impressive than the performance. Although the Linnets' endeavour could not be faulted, the usual attacking quality was simply washed away as the game more on. Manager Michael Ellison, who missed the rearranged fixture due to a prior engagement, will be delighted with the three points and a clean sheet in such trying circumstances. His assistant Matt Cross, who took charge, will along with the players and fans consider it a job well done. A real bonus was the late appearance off the bench of striker Freddie Potter after a six-week absence with a collarbone injury sustained in August's FA Cup defeat at Ashton Athletic. Runcorn's attacking talisman was soon in the thick of the action and thankfully, telegraphed a rather wild challenge, largely getting out of the way to escape unscathed. This led to a booking for the AFC Darwen left full back Callum Hoctor way.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

MIKE BIGNALL

This week we interviewed Runcorn Linnets Fan Mike Bignall, we found out what he think Linnets need to edge a bit closer to the League above and about Football in General What are your expectations for the the new season after your 4th Place finish last season? I think expectations in this league are always difficult, threes always the normal teams challenging plus a few extras in the mix. The big difference this season is the change to the promotion and relegation spots. Everyone is either pushing for top 2 or trying to avoid the bottom 6. Its a tougher league straight off the bat, which can only be a good thing.

This season will been different to last because? We have a settled squad, loosing the whole management team and nearly all the squad 10 days before the league started was difficult. Ello and Crossy have done an amazing job though and we have a great squad of players who clearly love playing for them.

Fans from other club don't know that Linnets? We're not as bad as some people would have you think :-) We seem to have this reputation of being to big for our boots and expect more than everyone else. Its not true we just love our footy.

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? I tend not to bother with the premier league any more, it just doesn't hold my interest. I think Kane is a great player, very honest in his approach. I miss the days of blood and thunder midfielders, the prem is just to nice.

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? Yeah I've been a few times, cant remember any scores though, my lad would probably be able to tell you though, he remembers everything apart from how to tidy up after himself.

After 3 near promotion in the league past 3 season before last what do you think u need to do to make that step closer to being If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Linpromoted? nets players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and Consistency has always been an issue, mainly down to injuries. At this why?

level you only need to loose a couple of players and it throws everything Peter Shilton, Paul Gasgoine, Ian Wright, Aaron Morris and Freddie Potter up in the air. Any team that can stay in the race until Christmas puts them Have you ever been to Wembley before if who was it and when? self in a good position, you need a good run from there to the end of the season to stand a chance. I've watched the old Runcorn FC there 3 times (lost every time) and EngWhat has been your most memorable moment of all time at land a few times, I was there for the wally with the brolly moment.

Linnets? Although there has been some great football moments my most memorable moment is a personal one. We lost our dad a few years ago (my brother and son watch Linnets as well) the club held a minutes applause at a home game. During the applause the Linnets LSU sand his name (there's only one Dave Bignall) it was one of the most moving things I've every witnessed and shows how personal non league football is. I'll never forget it.

What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season?

What would be your ideal scenario there at Wembley? A linnets win, in anything.

Your most underrated player is? Its an odd one, I rate the whole squad very highly, but Shanners seems to get grief from the fans of Town for not scoring millions of goals. Hes been incredible this season and last, never stops running.

The best away fan are? I've never been to a ground and not liked being there, so all of them I suppose. Its what makes non league great.

The best place to visit in the league is and why?

All ways Runcorn Town, they have built a great team and will take a lot of I love the teams that play at the top end of Lancashire, its an amazing part beating, derby matches are always great. City of Liverpool have a great of the country. following and 1874 is always a great game.

Prediction for today game?

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? I like going to places I've never been before, trying new pies is all ways great. Glossop's will take some beating though .

I don't predict match results, it always blows up in my face

Saturday 19th November 2016

Gate had the first chance of the game after not even a minute when a Freekick was awarded right in the corner, near the corner flag. Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't capitalise with the delivery too heavy. From the following goal kick the homeside registered their first chance. Mike Hall cutting out the pass into the box before a curling shot from outside the box was fired narrowly wide. Gate then had two chances in quick succession. First Ric Seear was sent clear through but home keeper Tom Hunt did well to save the one on one. From the resulting Freekick Gate came close again but defender Paul Carroll's header was over the bar. Gate the had a succession of corners but couldn't capitalise from either. First Joe Noblets corner had too much curl on it and went out for a goal kick. Then a minute later Noblet tried again but Linnets did well to scramble the ball away. Gate would then make the break through and finally find the back of the net. Left back Jake Higham getting forward to send a lovely low ball across the face of goal found a Linnets defender who could only put the ball in his own net with Ric Seear putting pressure on him. It was then Linnets with the next chance as they tried to find a goal back in the game. A corner was cleared by Andrew Richards on the post before Ben Fletcher saved the returning shot. Gate defended well again a couple of minutes later again from a corner. This time the corner was taken short but was easily cleared by Paul Carroll completed the clearance. Linnets would eventually make their pressure count and equalised in the 37th minute. A cross played into the box was scrambled in by big striker Mark Houghton to score his 15th goal of the season. but as quickly as Linnets equalised, Gate would take the lead again Some twin magic from the Seear twins when Ric Seear went down the byline and crossed into the back post to find his brother and twin, Ben to volley in. It would be Seear again who add his and Gate's second 10 minutes into the second half. Ryan Riley's shot parried into the feet of Ben Seear who made no mistake to grab his second of the game. Linnets grabbed a goal of their own back on 62 minutes. Paul Carroll penalised for a trip in the box, Linnets captain Kyle Hamid stepped up to convert the spot kick for his 15th goal of the season. Both teams still had their chances in the next 10 minutes but it would be again Linnets who would grab another goal to level the game. Kristian Holt tapping in at the back post to complete the comeback. Some teams would be happy with a 3-3 comeback but Linnets went one better. Sub Stuart Wellstead firing low past Fletcher who wasn't at fault for any of the goals.

Saturday 22nd April 2017

Manager Danny Penswick fielded arguably his strongest side for this big game with Max Rothwell, Joe Noblet and Brett Dawson all coming back into the team to start. In the searing Blackpool sun, the first five minutes looked like it was going to be a very close affair. Both teams playing a very attacking style with the ball going back to forward very often. It was Linnets who would go close first after nine minutes. A lovely strike from midfielder Kieran Nolan from outside the box but his shot was always rising. Gate the defended consecutive corners from Linnets well with Joe Griffith punching the ball clear before Tarren Moxon was fouled. The visitors would make the break through in the 27th minute in fortunate fashion. Keeper Joe Griffith was caught with the sun in his eyes from the corner and saw the ball go straight through his hands direct from the corner kick, Daniel McKenna credited with the goal. Gate were then on the back foot for a while after the goal and had to work hard with Linnets having a strong period of possession. Joe Griffith made two vital saves to deny the visitors. First a dangerous looking cross from the left was well held by Griffith in a crowded six yard box. He then denied Linnets with a point blank save at his near post with Linnets looking likely to score. Gate would grab a goal back in the game in what is known as the best time to score in a game. Paul Carroll's ball forward from defence found Brett Dawson who flicked the ball through to Tarren Moxon, Moxon then flicked the ball over keeper Adam Caunce before tapping into an empty net with ease. Gate then saw a 44th minute header clatter off the bar from Linnets after two corners but went into half time level with the visitors. The second half almost saw Gate go ahead after 52 minutes. A great ball forward by Danny Penswick found Tarren Moxon but his chip was save by Adam Caunce. Gate then had calls for a penalty turned down on 56 minutes when Paul Alexander clearly had his shirt pulled in the area but the ref waved away Gate's protest's. Paul Alexander was then in the right place at the right time to clear the ball near enough off the line on 72 minutes from a Linnets corner. Gate would then take the lead on 75 minutes when Brett Dawson was found in the box. He was in the right place at the right time to head past Caunce to give Gate the lead. Just four minutes later Linnets would level the game. A long throw into the box wasn't dealt with by Gate allowing sub Stuart Wellstead to turn and shoot in the six yard box to make it 2-2. Gate would leave it very late to score the winning goal. Brett Dawson running clear of the Linnets defence before scoring past Caunce to win the game sparking a mass pile

THE BIG INTERVIEW This week we interviewed Gate new boy Gary Pett, he joined us from Wrens at Start of the season .We ask him what Step up from the league and what Team he was looking forward to this season and his football life. What teams are you looking forward to facing this season?

I won’t know what to do with myself on a Saturday!

Charnock, they always dominated the West Lancs league and was always a What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? game, you loved to play and step your game up against them. First game I can remember was Blackpool Vs Chelsea in the FA cup. I went with my Dad and what a game it was. Which teams do you think will be tough this season? There will never be an easy game in this league. Both the Runcorn’s are the early leaders and look like the team to beat.

How well are you settling in at Gate and did you get warm welcome by other when you joined? I’m settling in very well at Gate. I knew a lot of the lads before I joined thanks to Sunday football and a couple of them playing for Wrens. This helped made it an easy transition.

What encourage you to make the step up form west Lancashire to NWCFL after so many successful years there?

Favourite ground you have ever played at? I have played at Fleetwood Town a few times and the pitch is a carpet, changing rooms are new and good quality and the food after is always decent.

What is your goal target for the season ? After last season I would like to hit the 20-25 mark but feel 15 would be a realistic target.

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why?

I fancied a new challenge. After last season and scoring 35+ goals I thought Beckahm, Scholes and Cantana. I should make the step up and see what I could achieve. I’ll never have a After growing up watching the best it would be amazing to share a pitch season like last so thought it was best to end West Lancs on a high note with them! and seek a new challenge.

What encouraged you to start playing football?

What the first thing you do before any match?

My Dad, he was a good footballer back in his day and played to a very good standard. He took me to football as a kid and always played in the garden with me. I loved the game straight away so carried on.

Music! Somehow I am in charge of the music so it’s get that on in the changing rooms.

Who was your footballing idol as a kid? David Beckham. I used to love watching him play and trying to model my game on him and take free kicks like him.

If you weren't a Midfielder , which other position would you love to play in, Have you ever played in other positions during your time?

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? I always splash cold water on my face.

What is the dressing like after picking up 3 points last week v Darwen? Unfortunately I was ill so I didn’t make it! (Man Flu)

Do you prepare any differently for big game then you do for nor-

Probably be a Keeper. In the warm ups or training I will always dive around mal league games? in the sticks. Growing up I had the problem of being very versatile so I have played every position on the pitch. I played CB a few times for wrens I might opt for a healthy breakfast and lunch. Every game is a big game at the moment though. the past couple seasons, So if not a keeper I would be CB.

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game?

What European team u loved for Gate to go up against in game?

I think my biggest challenge will be the day I decide to hang my boots up.

It’s got to be 1 of Real Madrid or Barcelona. Even though it would be a cricket score, it would be an experience.

Prediction for today's game?

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE EUROPEANQUICK CUP KICKS OFF ARSENAL’S SILVA

1955 2002

On 25 September 2002, midfielder Gilberto Silva scored a record goal to help Arsenal cruise past PSV in the Champions League group stage. PSV hosted the Gunners in Eindhoven for the game, which was the second of the tournament for both teams. Arsenal took the opening kick-off and Silva immediately raced unmarked down the center of pitch, where he received a cross from teammate Thierry Henry, then knocked the ball into the net. The official time for the goal was 20.07 seconds, making it the fastest goal in European Cup/Champions League history up to that point, narrowly beating Alessandro del Piero's time of 20.12, set in a 1997 match for Juventus against Manchester United. The day did not get any better for PSV. After Arsenal keeper saved their best chance of the day--a 22nd-minute shot from Mateja Kezman--the hosts went on to surrender three more goals to Freddie Ljungberg (66') and Henry (81', 90') and lost 0-4. PSV did better in the return leg, holding Arsenal to a scoreless draw in London, but the result eliminated them from the competition. Arsenal advanced, but were knocked out in the second group stage. Silva's record lasted until March 2007, when Bayern

THE TRAVELS OF FC MARCO

2007

On 27 September 2007, the Portuguese Football Federation relegated FC Marco and suspended the club for two years. Not that it mattered. Founded in 1927, Marco spent its entire existence in Portugal's lower divisions. Their best finish was fourth place in the second division, achieved in 2005. But two years later, they were back in the third division, where the 200708 season started without them, as they failed to show up for their first four matches. The FPF kept a close eye on the situation after the first missed game and gave Marco a little time to pull things together. By the fourth missed game, however, the FPF had had enough. On 27 September, they issued a formal notice of punishment, dropping Marco into the fourth division and suspending them for two seasons. It was a hollow punishment, however, as Marco never showed up for the fourth division, either. Shortly after the notice, the club dissolved. In 2009, a new club rose to take Marco's place. Called AD Marco 09, they entered the Porto Second Regional Division and began to work their way up the pyramid, earning promotion in their first season. They currently sit at the top of the Porto FA First Division, which is in the sixth tier of the Portuguese pyramid.

CHELSEA COOK UP A BAKER’S DOZEN

On 29 September 1971, Chelsea recorded their widest margin of victory, beating Jeunesse Hautcharage 13-0 in the second leg of their first-round meeting in the Cup Winners' Cup. The tie was effectively over after the first leg, with Chelsea beating Hautcharage, an amateur side, 0-8 in Luxembourg. But the 27,621 people who turned up at Stamford Bridge for the second leg were treated to a match of historic proportions. Striker Peter Osgood (pictured) started the scoring deluge, providing the opening goal in the fourth minute, then adding another two minutes later. By halftime, the Blues were leading 6-0 with additional goals from Alan Hudson (11'), John Hollins (13', pen.), David Webb (23'), and Ron Harris (44'). In the second half, Hautcharage successfully defended their goal until the 61st minute, when Tommy Baldwin increased the lead to 7-0. More goals soon followed, including two more from Baldwin (68', 90'), a second-half hat -trick from Osgood (63', 80', 88'), and one from Peter Houseman (77'). The final score of 13-0 set a single-game Chelsea record and, with a combined score of 21, also beat the previous European aggregate record of eighteen.
