The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “AFTER COMING A CLOSE SECOND LAST SEASON RUNCORN HAVE AGAIN STATRED WEL AND LOOK TO ALL THE PORENITAL TO GO ONE BETTER THIS TIME OUT Today we welcome Runcorn Town to the BA Stadium. After coming a close second last season Runcorn have again started well and look to have all the potential to go one better this time out. In Craig Cairns they have the most profiled marksman and in the league and we'll have to be at our best to stop him. That said they aren't a one man team and I was lightly impressed by there collective desire and workfare on Wednesday night against Northwich. They understand their strengths and play to them. On paper today sees top play bottom but we know it'll be much more competitive than the league table would suggest. Tuesdays defeat against Barlick brought with it many positives despite the result. We got the ball down and tried to play and create chances which are a must for us to succeed. As the new squad continues to develop we'll get better and I know the pints are just around the corner. Let's hope that starts today against Runcorn.

GATE WINLESS RUN CONTUIES AS THERE LOSE FIRST HOME GAME The visitors took the lead in this one after 23 minutes. Too easy down Gates right hand side for Joel Melia who wiped the ball into the box to find Mark Threlfall who powered the ball home. The visitors had a chance early on but a well worked corner routine could only find the post and was cleared. Ben Fletcher would again make a superb save before the away side doubled their lead. He denied Barlicks right winger after he fired low to Fletchers right. Two minutes later the homeside came again, this time Fletcher unable to keep them at bay. Midfielder Harry Thompson found too much space on the edge of the box to precisely stroke the ball past Fletcher into the bottom corner. Gates best chance of the first half came for striker Tarren Moxon. Moxon and Williams were forming a new partnership up front for the first time and looked lively throughout the game. It was Williams who found Moxon in the box for the golden chance but Moxon's side footed effort fell the wrong side of the post. Gary Pett, on his first league start for Gate, could have grabbed a goal back on the strike of half time. He went past two Barnoldswick players before firing the wrong side of the post. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 2-0 Barnoldswick The second half started well for Gate who looked a more energised side after the break. It would be Danny Penswick's men who would strike next. The lively Moxon finding the ball at his feet at the edge of the box made no mistake it smashing the ball into the bottom corner to give Gate hope. And it would be that hope that would spur Gate on for the last 40 minutes with plenty of chances for the homeside. Manager Danny Penswick could have volleyed his side level on the hour mark, but he connected too much with Mike Halls cross, to fire wide. Defender Corey Moorhead then had the chance to score his first goal for the club from a superb Jordan Douthwaite Freekick. His cross is found its way to the big centre half, but his looping header could only find the top of the net. It would be Barnoldswick though who would take their chances in this second half. They extended their lead on 72 minutes. They fired past Fletcher would was unlucky to concede three with another good performance.

He is a UEFA B qualified coach who has managed at Conwy Borough, Cefn Druids and Flint Town United. In his first season he guided Runcorn Town to third place in the Hallmark Security League.

Mark McGregor Assistant Manager

BREIF HISTORY Runcorn Town are celebrating their 50th season in football in 2017/18, and have come a long way from that very first season when the club were one of the founder members of the Runcorn Sunday League. They were formed as CKD, a works team from 'D' section of the local Castner Kellner plant. Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. The season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time. The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history.iIt is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations under Simon Burton's leadership, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up, with James McShane finishing as the league's overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup. In the clubs' FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. The first season in the Premier Division saw Town continue in the same vein that they left Division One, with the team losing out on the title on the last day of the season to Ramsbottom United. James McShane once again topped the league scoring charts with Town scoring over 120 goals in all competitions. The club were also once again the last remaining NWCL side in the FA Vase, this time reaching a replay in the Last 32 before bowing out, as well as making their debut in the FA Cup, winning two games before bowing out to Evo-Stik League side Ashton United. The 2012/13 season saw Town finish fourth in the league, with the main highlight of the season coming in the FA Vase. This saw the club reach the Last 16 for the first time, losing in extra time to Walsall Wood. Another good scalp came in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 5-0 away win at Warrington which earned the "Team of the Round" award. The 2013/14 season saw Town finish fifth, and they disappointingly lost at holders Whitley Bay in the Second Round of the FA Vase, but the club had its first decent FA Cup run. Wins against Bootle, Goole and Witton Albion set up a tie at Conference North leaders Barrow, 83 places above them in the pyramid. Town shocked their hosts with a 1-0 win thanks to Andy Potter's stunning goal, with Town losing in the Third Qualifying Round to Norton United. Two poor seasons followed finishing 13th in both, with Chris Herbert appointed manager at the start of the 2016/17 season. It was an uphill battle to get a squad together, with only one player retained from the previous season.

LAST TIME OUT

RUNCORN TOWN 6 NORTHWICH VICS 1 Wednesday 30th August 2017/ NWCFL Premier Division/ The Pavilions/Attendance: 167 Vic’s got off to a great start when in the 3rd min. a ball up the right found BRIAN MATTHEWS in space the striker unleashing an unstoppable volley past Andy Metcalf from the corner of the penalty area. Metcalf came to Town’s rescue minutes later bravely smothering the ball at the feet of Pollard. Town equalised in the 20th min. a well rehearsed training ground corner by McManus fell to MARK REED who headed the ball firmly high into the net. Town took the lead in the 23rd min. a ball over the top of the Vic’s defence by McManus fell to CRAIG CAIRNS who volleyed it home over the advancing Mottram. Cairns set up Evans mins later the youngster hammering the ball wide of Mottram’s upright. Pollard had a fierce shot blocked by Metcalf, then some good play by Marshall resulted in a low cross being put into the side netting by the out stretched boot of Pollard. A pinpoint cross from Carberry was headed high over the crossbar by Thelwell on half time. HALF TIME: RUNCORN TOWN 2 – 1 NORTHWICH VICTORIA CRAIG CAIRNS hit a superb curling shot into the top corner of the net on the re-start to give Town some breathing space. Metcalf produced an excellent save to thwart Matthews 18yd fierce shot. Evans had a low shot saved by Mottram, at the other end a similar effort from Gyimah was equally dealt with by Metcalf. With Vic’s attacking Town were forced to play on the counter, an overhead pass from Reed found CRAIG CAIRNS who volleyed the ball beyond Mottram in the 72nd min. From a corner kick Reed set up CRAIG CAIRNS in the 83rd min for a typical strikers goal from inside the 6yd area, the ball taking a deflection off a defender into the net. The final goal came in the 90th min when a ball back to Mottram was intercepted by CRAIG CAIRNS who from the narrowest of angles rolled the ball 20yds in to the back of the net.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END ANDY BROWN We caught up with Runcorn Town Fan Andy Brown. We interviewed him to ask him about what his experatcions was after there Brilliant Finished last season, we aslo found out what other fans don’t know about Runcorn Town. What are your expectations for the new season after your 3rd place finished last season? This season will been different to last because? I think I speak for most Town fans when I say we are feeling confident about our chances this year, not least because a re-organisation in the football pyramid offers the chance for two teams to be promoted, with a second team with the best record promoted from 12 of the 14 step 5 leagues. Another reason is that we have a settled squad. When Chris Herbert arrived before last season he had to build a complete squad from scratch. Most of our key players re-signed in this close season, so we have a much more settled team this time around. Moreover, he’s added very well to an already strong squad (Matt German from Cheadle, Rob Doran from Colwyn Bay, Michael Carberry from Bootle among others). We also have goals in the team. 52 goal striker Craig Cairns needs no introduction and with Simon Thelwell, Mark Reed, Kevin Exell and Rob Doran, this team will score goals! It might be an intangible factor, but this is a very close-knit squad with a great team spirit-vitally important in dragging the team through tough away fixtures in the winter! Who has been ur most memorable player/moment of all time? My personal favourite was right at the end of last season. In fancy dress (as a hot dog), with fellow Town fan George Perris (dressed as a banana), we went to the NWCFL Premier champions Atherton Collieries. Despite pressing, we were 1-0 down, only to hear that mysteriously Darwen had somehow managed to lose 8-0 at rivals Runcorn Linnets, which would have seen them finish above us on goal difference. Finally Town were rewarded in the 89th minute, when McGregor powered a header goalwards that brought a superb save from Reid, Exell turned the loose ball back into the 6 yard box for Craig Cairns blasted into the roof of the net. In the final minute of the game Town took the lead, Kearns played the ball to McGregor who had his shot blocked, quickly on to the rebound he laid the ball off to Joe Holt who hit it first time into the top corner from 25 yards. Absolute scenes from the Town fans-as we finished 3rd above Linnets-you can imagine the faces of the Linnets fans-I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall! What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? It’s a hard league this year, with some good teams. All teams in this division can stop your momentum if you don’t stay focused, as Squires Gate did to us on New Year’s Eve, snatching a last minute 1-1 draw. I’m looking forward to testing ourselves against City of Liverpool, Widnes (local derby), Northwich Vics and 1874 again (we have a terrible record against 1874 and need to change that) and of course Linnets. What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? I’ve not been to Burscough or Hanley, so that should be good. Bootle for both CoL and Bootle will be tough tests and always provide plenty of entertainment! Always like the atmosphere at Linnets and 1874 Northwich-can get pretty feisty-which is what football is all about! What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last season?, Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? I’m looking forward to testing ourselves against City of Liverpool, Widnes (local derby), Northwich Vics and 1874 again (we have a terrible record against 1874 and need to change that) and of course Linnets. The Gate player who I’ve always noticed is Brett Dawson, possibly because he’s a lively forward and caused us a few problems, especially snatching the draw at Pavilions only two months after we’d won 6-1 at Gate. Fans from other club don't know that Runcorn? Was the setting for British sitcom “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps”, which ran from 2001 and 2011 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Pints_of_Lager_and_a_Packet_of_Crisps Together with Widnes, Runcorn has had roadworks lasting for 10,000 years, to make way for the Mersey Gateway (as anyone trying to navigate the Expressways in Runcorn will tell you…) Runcorn is industrial, well known for ICI polluting the land around Weston, forcing compulsory relocation for many…Town play next to a giant incinerator-you can see the chimney for miles. However, despite the industry, there are actually some really scenic views over the River Mersey form Weston Village and Runcorn Hill Park is pretty nice. Natives of Runcorn could add to this list! If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? That’s tricky-how to answer this without offending anyone in the team! I think for sheer presence, Lukaku is a handful for any defence, so he’d be a good signing. N’Golo Kante would be great in midfield. For sheer workrate, I like Charlie Daniels at Bournemouth at left wing-back (who Bournemouth signed from Orient, by the way). Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? Nope-although I’ve been to the ground (it’s only a few minutes from AFC Blackpool (boo, hiss). The last one was a 6-1 win at Gate, I got dragged away to some family Bonfire Night display as it was on 5th November! If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 runcorn players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? Good question. Craig Cairns (lethal in front of goal) and Paul McManus (works really hard, great distribution). I’d go for Peter Schmeichel in goal, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo. Reckon that’s a tough team to beat! Have you ever been to Wembley before? And what would be your ideal scenario there? Yes-several times, to watch Leyton Orient, my team by birth (I since relocated, but still watch them all over). A heart-breaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Rotherham, followed by a dire Italian owner and 3 years later, the National League for the first time in 115 years. Also a playoff defeat to Scunthorpe in 1999. Ideal scenario would be to see Orient in an FA Cup semi (or final) one day, or win the playoffs there, or win the FA Trophy).I think nothing would beat seeing Runcorn Town get to the FA Vase final at Wembley-to share an experience like that with friends would be unbeatable. Finally where do u predict you will finish this year and do you think it higher than last? We’re aiming for first or second. Whether we can be consistent enough, depends on postponements over winter, which killed our momentum last year, as well as avoiding injuries to key players. We need to see out games where we’re not playing well and we’re showing signs we can do that. Prediction for today’s game? Gate 1-4 Town. Sorry!

Q&A WITH‌ KEVIN EXELL We caught up with Runcorn Town Player Kevin Exell. We interviewed him to ask him his time at Runcorn, most memorable moment playing for Runcorn we also found out who he would play with in a 5 A side Team

First of all, how long have you been at Runcorn Town and do you remember your first game? I've been at Runcorn Town since the first game of last season. My first game was also my FA Cup debut but was a day to forget as we lost 3-2 at Pontefract Collieries!

Most memorable moment in your playing for Runcorn town and why? I came through the Youth Team at Chester but got released which is why I came to Runcorn Town. We played Chester in a pre-season game in July and I scored, which was a great moment personally.

Is there any teams you look forward to facing the most? Any grounds that you enjoy going playing at? I am looking forward to the games against Runcorn Linnets which are always fun, as well as playing City of Liverpool as that should be a good crowd to play in front of. As for grounds, I love playing at AFC Liverpool as Marine's ground is fantastic and a perfect pitch.

Have you ever played at Squires Gate before, if so what was the score? Yes I have played at Gate once which was last season. I was also on the scoresheet as Town won 6-1.

Best game you have ever watched? I don't support them but the best game I recall was when Manchester City won the league title with the last kick of the game by Aguero! You couldn't script things like that.

What has been the best goal you have ever scored or seen someone scored on your team? The best goal was by my teammate Craig Cairns when we beat Barnton last year. He hit an unstoppable volley from outside the box that flew into the net.

What is the last thing you do before you walk out onto the pitch? Not very exciting but the last thing I do it nip to the loo!!

Favourite game you have ever played in? My favourite game at the club was the home win over Runcorn Linnets last season. It was our second home game I think, a great crowd and we got the win.

If you were to be in a 5 a side team with 4 Premier League legends, who would you pick and why? Not Premier League legends, but the four I would have are Van Der Saar in goal because he is a great shot stopper, Gattuso and Pirlo because they are both immense players and know each others game inside out. Up front it would have to be Ronaldo, no explanation needed!

What/who encouraged you to start playing football? Nobody encouraged me really. Maybe my mum who made sure I was out playing football all the time!

What is your first football memory? I don''t really have one. I've just always enjoyed playing and watching football really

Who was your footballing idol as a kid? Footballing idol was Tim Cahill. What a fabulous player who was so underrated throughout his career.

Prediction for today’s game Runcorn Town to win 3-0

WORLD CUP 2014 On Tuesday evening in Belo Horizonte, the World Cup saw one of the most onesided results in its history. Hosts Brazil were put to the sword in a defeat every-bit as nightmarish and galling as their 1950 defeat to Uruguay in the Maracana. On that night, the Selecao only lost 2-1 as they succumbed to South American rivals on home soil. At the Estadio Mineirao, against Joachim Low's Germany, Brazil fell to a 7-1 defeat - the largest semi-final loss in World Cup history. But where does it rank on the

WORLD CUP 1938 Back in the days when the World Cup was a straight knockout affair, Sweden and Cuba met in the World Cup quarter-finals. The Swedes progressed through their first round tie with Austria thanks to a walkover - Austria withdrew from the tournament after the Anschluss with Nazi Germany (which led to some of their players joining the German cause) - while Cuba beat Romania following a replay. However, in Antibes, the Cubans delight at that win would turn to despair, as they were slammed 8-0.

First-time African qualifiers Zaire were the whipping boys of Group 2 as they emerged from a group with Yugoslavia, Brazil and Scotland with zero points, zero goals scored and 14 conceded.

The Magical Magyars were heavy favourites to claim the crown in Switzerland, and did indeed make it to the final where they were surprisingly beaten by a West Germany side they had beaten 8-3 during the group matches.

The Yugoslavs were six goals to the good at half-time - they netted four goals in a 14 minute spell - and Dusan Bajevic helped himself to a treble.

The first time Miroslav Klose notched a World Cup goal, and it wouldn't be the last. The World Cup's record goalscorer helped himself to a hat-trick in the Sapporo Dome in Japan, as Germany opened their 2002 campaign with a thumping win. Less than 12 months after their 5-1 humbling by England in Munich, Die Mannschaft would reach the World Cup final.

Before that initial win, the Hungarians had opened up their tournament with a 9-0 decimation of South Korea in Zurich, with Ferenc Puskas a year after his dissection of England at Wembley - netting twice and leading with a starring performance. Sandor Kocsis hit a hat-trick, Zoltan Czibor also got on the scoresheet as Gusztav Sebes side - based around the club side Honved - ran riot to the delight of the

GROUNDHOP DIARIES

RUSSELL COX

Last season, we interviewed groundhoppers all over the UK and around the world and asked them what it was that encouraged them to start their footballing adventures and why they enjoy travelling to non league grounds all over the world. When we last interviewed Russell, he was on 575 grounds - which is a great achievement in itself but he has sure added to that tally over the previous campaign so we caught up with him during pre season and asked him about his recent adventures. Firstly , what encouraged you to start your football adventures? For groundhopping, it was probably a combination of getting fed up going to the same old places with Wycombe and being fed up with our style of play under the then manager Peter Taylor. It started slowly at first, starting with completing the 92, but really got going with the 2013 NCEL Hop. I’d only gone as I really fancied the Bridlington Town v Scarborough Athletic derby game. I treated the other games as a bonus, but enjoyed visiting new places so much, that ever since I have been doing over 100 games a season.

What is the earliest memory of going to football as a kid? I used to hate football, in fact I only got dragged along to a Wycombe v Watford friendly game as my Dad offered to get me a Mars bar at half time! Being young and not having much money at the time, it was too good to refuse

Do you remember your first game? - Who was your biggest footballing idol as a kid? I don’t recall much about my first game, or indeed first season, though my first favourite player was a striker called Mickey Nuttell. My fist vivid memory was of an FA Cup game in my second season (1992/93) against West Brom. It was a great game, played in a great atmosphere. If I wasn’t hooked before that, I certainly was after.

What do you enjoy the most about non league football? More reasonable prices, fans aren’t treated like cattle and segregated. You also feel like you are making a difference, rather than just being another number on the gate. A good club shop is also a bonus.

How many grounds have you visited up to now? As of the end of August, 714

Any favourite grounds in particular? Hitchin Town’s Top Field has been my favourite so far

What made them different to other non league grounds? It’s unique in that two sides of the ground have wooden terraces, plus there are some other nice touches. It’s good that it has remained unspoilt over the years and the club are rightly proud of it

Have you visited any obscure grounds? Loads that would seem obscure to the everyday football fan, but amongst groundhoppers, there’s plenty who have been to more than me. If I had to pick one, I’d say the Camp Municpal De Futebol in Ibiza – I went for a pre season tournament involving Wycombe Wanderers, Oldham Athletic and a local side called San Jose. Have you ever watched any games abroad? Yes, aside from Ibiza, I’ve also been to games at Lazio and Atletico Madrid, plus a few in Germany

Have you ever witnessed any memorable/historic moments for a team (play off wins, cup wins, etc)? I’ve seen Wycombe play in the FA Cup semi final in 2001, the League Cup semi final in 2007 as well as various promotions

The best game you have ever seen live? Wimbledon 2-2 Wycombe (we won 8-7 on penalties) in an FA Cup 5th Round replay in 2001

The worst game you have ever seen live? Too many to mention, probably Cheshunt v Southend Manor in a 2011 FA Cup Preliminary Round game

Any grounds that you are planning on visiting over the next couple of months? A few in Belgium such as Anderlecht and KV Mechelen. Apart from that, nothing as I like to do FA Cup games when possible, so I don’t decide until fairly near the game

FACTFILE: Favourite match meal: Pint and a pie Favourite ground: Hitchin Town Footballing Idol: Martin O’Neill - excellent manager at Wycombe Favourite drink: Cider (real, and preferably dry) First football shirt owned: Wycombe Wanderers 1992/93 Favourite year in football: Club - 2001. Country - Euro ‘96.

SATURDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2016

The visitors opened the scoring on 6 minutes with their first attack of the game. League top goal scorer Craig Cairns holding off Dave Rossall to fire past Fletcher. Chances for Brett Dawson first from a corner which he fired wide then from a shot after he'd weaved his way through the defence fell in between Towns two goals. Winger Kevin Exell made it two for Town on 26 minutes. A tackle coming in from Ryan Stayte was evaded by the winger who fired low past Fletcher. The visitors were in fine from around Gates box and made it 3-0 going into the break. Striker Simon Thelwell this time in the right place at the right time to tap in with Gates defence frozen.

The second half started with Ben Seear going close for Gate after five minutes but after riding the challenge, his shot was saved by the keepers legs. Runcorn then grabbed their fourth and fifth of the game on 58 and 60 minutes. Striker Craig Cairns grabbing both to seal his hatrick. First he was unmarked in the box and had all the time in the world to fire past Fletcher. Then Cairns pounced on a mistake that the back for Gate to complete his hatrick. Town would make Gates day even worse on 69 minutes when sub Forbes was unmarked in the box to easily tap in at the back post. Gate would grab a goal back on 90 minutes when defender Seydou Bamba headed in Ryan Tanser's corner.

SATURDAY 31ST DECEMBER 2016

When the twos sides had previously met, top of the league Town had won 6-1 though both managers admitted after the game that the score line flattered Town. Runcorn came into the game with a three point lead at the top of the league. It was Town that had the first chance of the game when former Gate striker Isaac Kusaloka took aim from distance but fired straight into Griffiths arms. Just a minute later though it was Gate who had a chance of their own. Brett Dawson picking the ball up deep played a lovely ball into the path of both Ben Seear and Jake Higham but neither could finish. Leading goal scorer Craig Cairns then had a great chance after striker partner Kusaloka pulled the ball back to him at the edge of the box, but he fired well over the bar. Again Gate replied with a good chance of their own but again couldn't capitalise. Bamba passing the ball into the feet of Ben Seear, Seear flicked the ball up then fired towards goal but the shot went straight into the keepers arms. Gate then had probably their best chance of the first half on 30 minutes. Thornber flicking the ball into Richards, he headed onto Brett Dawson but the strikers thunderous strike was fired wide. The turning point would come on 42 minutes when the homeside were awarded a penalty. Manager Danny Penswick judged to have bought down striker Craig Cairns in the box though the decision looked soft. Cairns stepped up to convert the penalty and give Runcorn the half time lead. The second half saw Gate dominate most of the half after a good first 10 minutes for the home side. Gate could have equalised on 65 minutes, Town clearing the ball off the line from a Gate corner. Before that striker Brett Dawson was unlucky to see his effort saved. Gate then had another chance this time from a freekick, but that was headed wide at the back post. Gate then forced Town’s keeper into a great save to keep them in the game. Dave Rossall sent a lovely ball forward to find Seydou Bamba, but Bamba’s shot is pushed clear by the keeper. Bamba had a second chance from Mike Hall’s cross back into the box but he just couldn’t stretch far enough to meet the ball. All Gate’s hard work would be rewarded with six minutes left to play. Like at title contenders Atherton Colls earlier in the season Gate would work their socks off and get a deserved equaliser. Jake Higham firing a thunderous strike which cannoned off the post into the path of Brett Dawson to tap in. It’s a win which keeps Gate in midfield but shows what Penswick team can do, with just Runcorn Linnets the only team in the top five, Gate haven’t picked up points against.

Q&A WITH… MARK BUCHAN In a new regular feature, we interview Gate Attacker. Buchan, been at gate now for 2 seasons now and he scored the winning goal to keep us up 2 season ago from the penalty spot. We interviewed him to found out what teams he was looking forward to play against this season What teams are you looking forward to facing this season? I always look forward to the teams expected to be around the top but anyone can beat anyone in this league so every week is just as exciting for me.

Which teams do you think will be tought season? It's easy to say the teams with budgets but going to the likes of Hanley congleton Maine road abbey hey are hard to get points.

What encouraged you to start playing football?

Who was your footballing idol as a kid?

If you weren't a Striker, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time? I've played centre mid in my younger years, I'm surely a better centre back that Penswick though ?

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game? Trying to play with bungalows like Danny ( The gaffer ).

If you could pick one BPL or Scottish team for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why?

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid?

Favourite ground you have ever played at?

What is your goal target for the season ? Strikers shouldn't have targets, you don't want to stop scoring goals !

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why? Alan shearer strike partner, scholes to pick me out and john terry to keep a clean sheet.

What the first thing you do before any match?

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Wash at the sink.... superstitious.

What can you do on the pitch when you feel that Gate aren’t in good form? The lads say I'm a moaner at times but I'm just demanding more and digging deeper.

What’s the dressing room morale like after not winning yet in the league? The morale is never low for us because the lads are mates as well. Probably myself and douthy are the jokers, he ain't getting his training kit till he pays

What European team who u loved for Gate to go up against in champions league? Has to be Real Madrid, every players dream !

Prediction for today's game?

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

GREMIO GETS A LITTLE GREEDY

1995

On 30 August 1995, Grêmio won their second Copa Libertadores, beating Atlético Nacional on points over two legs. Both teams had won the tournament once before, with Grêmio taking the honors in 1983 and Atlético in 1989. Grêmio returned to the final in 1984, but were unable to defend their title, losing to Independiente. They entered the competition in 1995 as Copa do Brasil holders and, after finishing second to Palmeiras in the group stage, advanced with wins over Olimpia, Palmeiras, and Emelec to reach the final. Atlético, meanwhile, entered as Colombian top flight champions and, after also finishing second in their group (to Millonarios) reached the final with victories over Peñarol, Millonarios, and River Plate (on penalties). Grêmio won the first leg of the final 3-1 on 23 August in front of their own supporters at the Estádio Olímpico, thanks in part to an opening owngoal from Atlético's Víctor Marulanda in the 35th minute. They followed that with strikes from Mário Jardel (43') and Paulo Nunes (55') before Juan Pablo Ángel pulled one back for Atlético in the 72nd minute. In the second leg, played one week later at Atlético's Estadio Atanasio Girardot, the hosts again opened the scoring with a 12th-minute goal from Víctor Aristizábal. They held the lead deep into the second half, but needed another goal to preserve their hopes of lifting the trophy-the rules at the time decided the winner on points, then by goal differential, so a 1-0 win would draw them level with Grêmio on points, but leave them down a goal on differential. Then, as Atlético pushed for a second, they conceded an 85th-minute penalty kick that was converted by Dinho to seal the win for the Brazilians. Grêmio returned in 2007, but finished as runners-up to Boca Juniors, while Atlético won the tournament in 2016 over Independiente del Valle.

SEVILLA CAN’T BE SUPER A SECOND TIME

2007

On 31 August 2007, AC Milan spoiled Sevilla's bid to repeat as Super Cup champions, beating the Spanish side 3-1 in Monaco. Sevilla, as winners of the UEFA Cup in 2005, played their first Super Cup in 2006, beating the reigning Champions League winners Barcelona 0-3. They won the UEFA Cup again in 2006 to set up their 2007 meeting with that year's Champions League winners, AC Milan. Playing before a crowd of 17,822 at the Stade Louis II, Sevilla staked their claim with a 14th-minute goal from Brazilian playmaker Renato. The score resulted from a corner kick that Renato headed down to the feet of Milan keeper Dida, who misjudged the bounce and allowed the ball to get past him into the net. Despite pressure from Milan at the other end, particularly from striker Pippo Inzaghi, Sevilla still held the 01 lead at the break. Shortly after the restart, however, Inzaghi headed the equalizer home (55') and Milan claimed the lead seven minutes later with a thundering volley from left back Marek Jankulovski to the far post (62'). Milan sealed the win in the 87th minute after Sevilla left back Ivica Dragutinović conceded a penalty with a tackle from behind on Madrid striker Kaká, who dutifully converted the kick to stretch the margin of victory to 3-1.

LIKE I NEEDE ANOTHER DISTRACTION IN MY LIFE On 1 September 1992, the first Championship Manager video game hit store shelves. The series has since become one of the most successful in UK history. The game, written by brothers Paul and Oliver Collyer, was first released on the Amiga and Atari platforms, but soon moved to PCs. Pitched as "the most realistic football management simulation ever," it allowed players to manage teams from the top four divisions in English football through the league and cup competitions (including European tournaments). t initially drew criticism for the lack of graphics, which resulted from the game's focus on managerial decisions instead of match play, but later versions allowed the user to watch the matches unfold. One version, Championship Manager 4, became the fastest-selling PC game of all time in the UK. The Collyer brothers formed their own company, Sports Interactive, to develop the game. In 2004, a split with publisher Eidos Interactive resulted in the Collyers and SI losing the rights to the Championship Manager name. They formed a partnership with Sony and began a separate franchise under the name Football Manager. The two games now compete against each other. the summer of 2012, in honor of the game's twentieth anniversary, BackPage Press published a book titled Football Manager Stole My Life.

GATE NEWS NEW LOOK KIT FOR GATE IN 2017/2018 SEASON

Once again, we’ve teamed up with Ian Senior at SK Kits to bring this slick modern design for our first team players. With a thinner material and new laser print manufacture, it’s a comfier design for the players to thrive in. On the front of the shirt we welcome a new sponsor in MCI Developments. MCI’s head offices are based in Wigan but they cover the whole North West and West Midlands. MCI are responsible for some of the most attractive and well-designed new homes in the North West priding themselves on detail and commitment to the highest build standards. We’d like to particularly thanks Director Andrew Garnett for agreeing to the sponsorship and we look forward to working closely with the MCI team in the future. On the back of our shirt you’ll see the Radio Wave logo. Radio Wave are our local Radio Station broadcasting to over 66,000 people across the Fylde Coast. They serve the local community keeping listeners up to date with news, weather, traffic and local information. We look forward to working with Radio Wave over the next couple of months and increasing our profile in the local area. A big thank you to Paula Davies and the team at Radio Wave for teaming up with the club. The final sponsor on the kit is The Royal British Legion on the back of our shorts. This was a very important sponsor for our club and is a charity we have good links with. As many will know the club was founded as ‘Squires Gate British Legion’ back in 1948. Since then we’ve had great help from the charity and the ground was named ‘The Royal British Legion Stadium’ for the past couple of season. We feel this is a nice nod of acknowledgment to a charity that has close links to the club. The first team will be playing in the kit in tonight’s game against Barnoldswick Town. The kit will be available to purchase from behind the bar soon, so keep an eye out for that on the website.
