Saturday 26th January 2019 / The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:45 Squires Gate made it two games unbeaten on Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Hanley Town. The visitors came looking to pick up points in there fight to avoid the drop coming into the game second bottom, Gate meanwhile were looking to push themselves further into the top ten after returning to winning ways last weekend. The game started in a competitive manner with both sides looking to size each other up. Gates first chance came from an unlikely source, left back Adam Sumner found himself in space on the edge of the box but his fierce piledriver was tipped over by the keeper. Gate took the lead after just six minutes into the game. Riccardo Egidi making it two goals in two games when he bundle to ball into the back of the net at the back post. The lead didn’t last long though as straight from kick off, the visitors equalised. Winger Serkari Ahmadi given too much time to cut inside and beat Ben Fletcher. Dean Ing had a good chance to make it three goals in two games in the 11th minute when the ball came across him on the edge of the box but he couldn't connect with the ball.

Dean was the involved in a nasty clash of heads minutes later but the midfielder thankfully recovered to continue the game for Gate. Gate were restricted by Hanley to mostly long shots in the first half as Clarkson's men struggled to get past Hanley's backline. Half time : Squires Gate 1-1 Hanley Town Hanley came close to taking the lead for the first time in the game when they looked to curl the ball past Ben Fletcher, but the shot was too high and over the bar. Dean Ing took aim again from outside the box on the 60th minute but his low drive took a touch on the way through but no corner came Gate's way. Gate's best chance of a winner came two minutes from full time. An error by Hanley keeper Ben Chapman saw a back pass played straight to the feet of Ric Seear but the striker, who probably had more time than he knew, couldn't curl the ball into the empty net.

DANNY FORREST Danny joined Silsden in the late stages off 2016 even though him and his management team has done so well in there games their couldn't stop Silsden getting relegated. The season after he was very successful but got nothing for it however the season he got what Silsden and he wanted they got promoted back to the premier division beating all record with 109 points. Danny started this well but in previous week has drop some points they may off wanted but they still sit in 6th place after 21 games. Danny Knows Gate are no walk not only are gate unbeaten in 5 and in good forum they

HISTORY OF SILSDEN ilsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays. The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & District Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year in that division, set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed three seasons. In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season, a feat only achieved by one other club. It was clear that the team was ready for football at a higher level and in season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the North West Counties League. Without floodlights and an enclosed pitch, the Cobbydalers were forced to play their home games at Cougar Park, the home of Rugby League Club, Keighley Cougars. The Cobbydalers gained promotion to the top division in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell Laird, and had their most successful runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase Competitions. The club's aim was to move back to the Keighley Road ground at the earliest opportunity and the club (Football and Cricket) embarked on a period of fund raising accrueing over £100,000. Finally the development took place, with the help of a £663,453 grant from the Football Foundation, as part of its continuing investment in grass-roots football and an additional Football Foundation grant of £300,000 through the Community Club Development Programme. In May 2009 the building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed and August 2010 saw the completion of the ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place.... back in Silsden! The Cobbydalers have maintained their position in the top division of the NWCFL and in 2015 embark on their tenth season in the division, their best year being in season 2008-09 when they finished ninth with 58 points. Silsden AFC have also a progressive junior set up with age groups running from Under 5's right through to Under 19's. Some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. There is a prestigious Junior Competition each year running over the first weekend of July and the club also have three ladies teams. With the of the folding of the NWCFL League, Silsden Reserves will be playing in the Lancashire League East Division in 2014-15. The club prides itself on being a Friendly Club with close links with the Community. Various Charity events are held every summer on the field along with the facilities being used by the local Primary School, Silsden Majorettes and the Scouts. Bradford Schools use the fields for their home games and there are plans for Craven College to use them. This summer Camping was held as the Tour de France passed the ground with five helicopters landing and taking off from the first team pitch.

LAST TIME OUT FOR SILSDEN CITY OF LIVERPOOL 1 2 SILSDEN DALTON 24

ILLINGWORTH 10 OWN GOAL 55

SATRUDAY 26TH JANUARY 2019/NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/TDP SOLICTORS STADIUM /HT: 1-1/ATT:487 “Take a walk around my centre-half gentlemen, he’s a colossus” So said Bill Shankley on the arrival of Ron Yeats at Liverpool in 1961. (The modern day equivalent would be Virgil van Dijk!)” On Saturday the Cobbydalers had their own “Colossus” in Dan Illingworth, although this was far from a one man effort, with every player rising to Danny Forrest’s challenge “to get back on track” City of Liverpool FC, leading the North West Counties Premier League by fourteen points at the start of play, had only lost two games all season, at home to their landlords, second-placed Bootle and away at third-placed Congleton. Silsden were unlucky not to have beaten the “Purps” in October, the visitors scoring a late equaliser. Without regular keeper Callum Jakovlevs, who was serving a one match ban, Forrest was struggling to find a replacement, eventually signing Cameron Alisson, a second year scholar at Fylde FC, who trains with the first team thrice a week. Added to that, the recent results, three narrow defeats in January to teams below the Cobbydalers, made Forrest’s demand a tall order. Craig Bentham and Aidan Kirby returned for the Reds, who began with a strong wind at their backs, not a major advantage as some ball caught on the wind and went “dead”. However Silsden were out of the blocks immediately the game kicked off. Matty Moses stormed down the right on the overlap and crossed into the Purps’ box. Kirby headed wide. A corner from the right held up in the wind and Illingworth couldn’t get enough on his header to beat Luke Denson. Arley Barnes’s effort caught the wind and went wide but, when Kirby held the ball up, he slid it to Joe Mitchell who fed Storrie. His shot was deflected for a corner. The ball was partially cleared but ILLINGWORTH, who had stayed in the goal area, headed Mitchell’s cross into the goal. The Cobbydalers continued to enjoy some good periods of possession with Mitchell pulling the strings. Luke Rhodes curled a shot marginally wide and Storrie had another effort deflected for a corner. Barnes and Moses were able to break down the wings as Kaine, Illingworth and Craig Bentham kept the Purps at bay. It was midway through the half when City tested the Silsden defence. A corner was swung in and Dan DALTON got a header in at the back post which McDonald couldn’t quite reach. The Purps gained some momentum after the equaliser but Kaine’s superb defensive header kept the scores level. In fact it led to a breakaway with Mitchell bursting through deep into the Liverpool half. The attack ended with Bentham’s cross catching the wind and going dead. Back came the home side. Peterson managed to get a header on a cross. The ball beat Allison but bounced on the crossbar not once but twice! Allison gathered it as it came back into play! At the other end Illingworth hit a ball across to Moses who sent it into the Purps’ penalty box. Kirby got his header in but the wind took it wide of the far post. The last ten minutes of the half belonged to the Liverpudlians but Kaine (twice) and Illingworth both headed clear before McGrath had a shot deflected for a corner. The half-time whistle went. The wind had eased a tad by the start of the second half. Silsden were the first to show, Mitchell shooting narrowly wide after good play by Bentham and Storrie. The Purps then pushed the Cobbydalers back. Kaine, Moses and Bentham in 01 MORGAN BACON 01 CAMERON ALLISON turn, cleared the danger. Silsden looked dangerous on the break with the pace of Storrie testing the home defence. Rhodes saw another effort just 02 LUKE DENSON 02 MATTHEW MOSES clear the bar. A super tackle by Everingham led to a break-away, Barnes 03 DAVID THOMPSON 03 MARK EVERINGHAM feeding Kirby, who drove the ball into the Purps’ goal area. There was a mix-up between the keeper and his right back. STORRIE pounced to net 04 JOSEPH HOLT 04 JOSH KAINE from a yard out. With half an hour to go, City threw men forwards. Silsden 05 DANIEL DALTON 05 DANIEL ILLINGWORTH were pushed back. It was like a storm in the Irish Sea. The Silsden defence stood as firm as the hundred Antony Gormley life–size, cast-iron statues 06 ANTHONY BROWN 06 CRIAG BENTHAN on nearby Crosby beach. The ball was hoisted into the Silsden area time 07 JACK HAZLEHURST 07 ARLEY BARNES after time. The defence held firm with Illingworth immense. McDonald hit a post. Kaine made another masterful interception. When keeper Allison 08 PAUL WILLIAMS 08 JOSEPH MITCHELL did make a mistake coming out of his area, the Silsden skipper was there 09 JOHN MCGRATH 09 WILLIAM STORRIE to save the day. No matter what the pressure was, the Cobbydalers were still a threat on the break. Kirby was denied by a swift intervention by Ba10 THOMAS PETERSON 10 AIDAN KIRBY con before he hit another effort over the bar. Niall Sultan, on for Storrie, 11 FRANCIS FOY 11 LUKE RHODES kept the home defence occupied whilst at the other end Illingworth headed out again and again. Allison went down at his near post to deny Hazelhurst. Everingham charged down a shot from substitute Owens. With 12 JAMES MCDONALD 12 JOSHUA MCKIERNON the clock ticking down Lawrence Sorhaindo, who came on for Kirby, almost netted a third for the Cobbydalers after an error by Dalton. The Purps had 14 DAVID FORBES 14 NIALL SULTAN one last chance but Allison saved Hazlehurst’s low shot before the final 15 KEVIN MCELLIN 15 LAURENCE SORJAINDO whistle went! Phew. The Cobbydalers have no game next Saturday and are 16 KRIS OWENS 16 DANIEL FORREST away at Squires Gate on the 9th February in a game replacing the game abandoned for a floodlight failure.

LAST TIME AT THE BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM

SQUIRES GATE Buchan 15,25 Mckenna 20

3 1 SILSDEN

Tuesday 13th October 2016 /NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM /ATT:45

quires Gate hosted fellow strugglers Silsden on Tuesday night looking to get back to winning ways after Saturday's 5-1 defeat to Bootle. Silsden say two places above Gate coming into the game and were unlucky not to win against Linnets after a 97th minute winner for Linnets. Manager Danny Penswick missed the game after picking up a knock and was replaced by Noblet. Nathan Trout came in for Colquhoun who dropped to the bench and Ryan Riley came in for Rowley who was unavailable. Gate started the game very well early on with Josh Kay almost opening the scoring. He cut inside but the ball cannoned off both posts before being cleared. Joe Noblet was the next to try his luck from midfield but his curling shot fell the wrong side of the post. Gate opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game. The ball played upto Buchan who cheated the ball to Riley he took the ball in his stride and opened his legs. Riley took the ball to the byline and crossed to find the run of Buchan who got himself in the box to head Gate in the lead. Riley was again involved this time linking with McKenna who controlled the cross field pass well and took the ball in his stride. He stormed into the box before drifting the ball into the back of the net. Gate added a quick fire third on the 22nd minute a free kick from Fletcher fired into the box found Buchan who challenged for the ball. Silsdens keeper dropped the ball in the challenge allowing Buchan and easy tap in for his second. Silsden had the last chance of the first half but the cross couldn't find the run of the number 9 at the back post. Gate made a poor start to the second half and conceded nine minutes into the half. Gates defence allowing Silsden space to find the back of the net and give them a boost. The second half featured more chances for the visitors as they came into the game more. But Gate defended well and had chances of there own. Josh Westwood with the chance to make it 4-1 but his header from the corner was cleared off the line. Billy McKenna had a chance to grab his second but his shot with the left was over the bar. Gate held on to record there second victory of the season much to the applause of the crowd and players.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid By Matt Badcock

EVERY SEASON in the FA Cup there is a shock. Whether it was AFC Wimbledon beating West Ham United in convincing manner last Saturday night or Barnet’s magnificent run to the fourth round – and now a replay. The Bees have won away at League sides Bristol Rovers and Sheffield United before sharing a sixgoal thriller with Brentford on Monday night to set-up another clash at Griffin Park. But even though these upsets so often happen, we still hear the same tired line trotted out about the “magic of the cup”. Invariably it is “alive and well” or the “romance still exists”. Well, of course. At these levels it never stopped. Just because some Premier League sides choose to rest players, that doesn’t stop the lower league and Non-League clubs thriving in the competition. My theory is it’s just become an easy thing to say. It’s an easy line for all of us in the media or on the terraces. It’s so often repeated that eventually we just believe it. But I’ve seen enough great FA Cup days in my time on The NLP to know that the FA Cup will keep creating memories and history every year. And maybe Barnet can keep adding to that in the next fortnight. Good luck to the Bees! DAN SPARKES’ wonder free-kick for Barnet in the 3-3 draw with Brentford was straight out of the top drawer. He’s always been a player that has impressed when I’ve seen him over the years. But it also serves as a reminder of perhaps one of the greatest double acts in recent Non-League memory when he was at Braintree. In the same side as striker Sean Marks, the pair finally got on the scoresheet together against Nuneaton Borough for goals. If only Marks & Sparkes had been able to repeat the feat in the same game as former Grimsby striker Lenell John-Lewis… GOOD NEWS The FA are addressing an issue that often crops up around club and league allocations in the summer. The provisional division line-ups are released on the understanding things can change between then and the leagues’ AGMs. Often a club has gone bust in between time and the domino effect can see teams moved leagues through no fault of their own. Last season Shaw Lane withdrew late and the knock-on effect hit clubs across the country. Wimborne were promoted to Step 3, while Banbury and Hednesford Town, at the same level, and Fleet Town at Step 4 were moved laterally across divisions. For Fleet particularly it was a crushing blow they would never have seen coming. The FA were bound by regulations at the time but revealed to us in last week’s NLP that they’ve acted to change them. From now it is most likely only clubs from the same divisions will be affected – and not those hundreds of miles away. IT was a real pleasure to speak to Ramsbottom United chairman Harry Williams recently. His tales of more than 50 years at the Northern Premier League club were a joy to listen to as Rammy gear up to welcome AFC Fylde in the FA Trophy. He still insists players buy some raffle tickets before they get their wages and he spends hours tending the ground that now bears his name. In his 53 years since setting the club up, he’s missed just three games. It’s people like Mr Ramsbottom that keep Non-League going across the country. We applaud you all.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid By Matt Badcock V A BLOODY R. For years the debate around technology raged. Should football have it? Should it not? Will it help? Will it take away the spontaneity and disrupt the flow of the game? The answers still aren't all that clear. In last year's Russian World Cup there were some decisions where its use made absolute sense. There were others times that left everyone scratching their heads. Essentially it is used in four scenarios. Goals and whether there was a violation in the build-up like an offside or foul. The next is for penalty decisions – general fouls aren’t reviewable unless it is a direct red card. And the final option is for cases of mistaken identity when yellow or red cards are issued. The system is something everyone is clearly getting used to – referees, players and fans. That is a big part of the problem. Having held off for so long, it's like to football powers were so desperate to use it that the process has been completely rushed. Supporters inside the stadium and at home watching on TV don't fully know what is happening. In cricket and rugby, we at least hear the conversation between the officials. In American Football, decisions are literally announced to the crowd. But football too often treats its fans - customers - like a school child with a box of matches. The lack of transparency that masks many areas of the game is the same here. Eventually showing a replay doesn’t really cut it. Clips should be shown inside stadiums and we should hear the officials arrive at their verdict. Instead fans in the ground wait for a man with his finger in his ear to make an arm signal. VAR is not something Non-League clubs are going to be worrying about any time soon, if ever. Apart from when it comes to the FA Cup. The system was introduced during last year’s competition. Let’s be clear. If correct decisions are being reached because of it, then all well and good. But surely there has to be a level playing field. The fact is, not all grounds have it. Take the other weekend, for example. Championship side Sheffield Wednesday were awarded a penalty at Chelsea. VAR was in operation, the decision was looked at and the Chelsea defender clearly won the ball. Penalty overturned and on we go – although Wednesday would have felt they should instead have been awarded a corner rather than the drop ball that restarted the game. Last Monday night, Barnet had Brentford on the ropes. Having fallen behind, Darren Currie’s side swung the tie back their way with two quick goals from Shaq Coulthirst. But just seven minutes later, Brentford were thrown a lifeline. Referee Andy Madley adjudged David Tutonda to have fouled Ollie Watkins in the box. Replays clearly show there was no contact. It’s not even up for debate. Watkins, probably expecting contact, went down untouched. He’s since apologised. Despite the game being shown live on BT Sport and replays within seconds showing a clear angle, there was nothing that could be done because VAR was having the night off. Brentford scored, went on to take the lead before Dan Sparkes’ wonderful free-kick made it 3-3 and booked a replay It’s all Sliding Doors, but who’s to say if VAR had been deployed that Barnet wouldn’t have gone on to win the game 2-1 and proceed to the fifth round, banking £180,000 while they’re at it? There has to be parity across the competition to keeps its integrity. VAR should only come into operation from a certain stage, say, the quarter-finals. Where it is likely most clubs will be in the Premier League and able to cope with what is needed or arrangements can be made. It can’t be one set of rules for the fortunate big boys and another for the so-called minnows.

AROUND THE LEAGUE The icy winter blast that swept across the area in the previous few days meant a near total wipeout of the fixture card, with only three games surviving. One of those was well out of the area, on the outskirts of Cambridge, but it was an enjoyable one for Northwich Victoria, whose 3-1 win in extra time against Histon saw them through to the last eight of the competition. A great effort by Histon supporters ensured the game went ahead, with many turning up first thing on Saturday morning to clear snow off the pitch, ensuring the game went ahead. But it was Vics who emerged victorious thanks to two goals from Darryll Mason and one from substitute Jordan Darr. Two league games survived the wintry conditions, one of those on the artificial surface at the Anfield Sports Centre, where again volunteers turned in Numbers in the morning to clear snow, and ensure that the First Division North game between Lower Breck and Cleator Moor Celtic went ahead. It turned out to be effort that was rewarded, with Breck posting an 8-1 win, their biggest home win of the season. Oscar Billington set the tome with the opener in the second minute, and after two more goals from Stephen Milne, Billington added a second of his own in the 34th minute to give Breck a 4-0 lead at the break. A goal from Jay Colbeck and an own goal made it 6-0 for Breck, before Ryan Hall provided a crumb of comfort for Celtic with a consolation goal 17 minutes from time. But two late goals from Jamie Henders rounded off a good afternoon of the home side, with the win moving them into fourth place in the table. One game survived in the First Division South, and it gave Rylands the chance to move four points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 home win over Eccleshall. Andy Scarisbrick, Tom Freeman and Stuart Wellstead all scored in the opening 36 minutes to clinch victory for the league leaders.
