’s always a pleasure to take part in the FA Vase, another prestigious competition and we’re hoping to go far in it this season.Ourvisitorswon’tmake it easy for us though, I travelled up to watch them on Wednesday evening and they’re a good side who will prove tough competition for us Wetoday. ’re feeling confident at the moment though, as things continue to come together for this fresh, young squad. After what was a disappointing performance against Padiham, we bounced back in style last Saturday in our game against Longridge Town. We went into thegamewithaplanabouthow

Gate made it 3 0 on 29 minutes through Nathan Cliffe. Good work between Hughes and Riley down the right led to Mekkaoui Abouzaid beating his man in the box, rounding the keeper and finding Cliffe who smashed into the open goal.

Cliffe scored his second and Gate’s fourth just six minutes later, with Pett doing brilliantly to keep the ball and find Mekkaoui Abouzaid on the edge of the box who layed it off for Cliffe to finish clinically past the Longridge goalkeeper. take it round the goalkeeper but was denied. Riley then had a well struck free kick parried away. Pennington was called into action at the other end to make two excellent saves. Firstly the goalkeeper denied Ing from close range, then tipped away a goal bound header from the bottom corner. Pett almost got his second goal and Gate’s fifth twice in the closing stages. Firstly the striker was denied from close range, then he headed agonisingly wide from the following corner. ABANKWAH WESTWOOD © RILEY

Andy is an experienced goalkeeper who joined the club in pre season 2022. Andy is well known throughout the Northern League and has excellent shot stopping. He has previously played for the likes of Boldon CA, South Shields and Jarrow Roofing.

JACK LEONARD JONATHAN PEARSON JONNY CARR SIMON TODD Jack signed from North Shields in July 2022. An exciting attacking midfielder who was previously at Hartlepool United and Morpeth Town, Jack brings plenty of quality to the squad. Jonna signed in July 2020. A boxtobox midfielder, Jonna looks to do everything right and brings experience to the middle of the park.

Ethan is only just starting his Northern League career, but he’s a very good young centre back. Commanding in the air and with the ball on the floor, Ethan will growinto a superb centre back. Ryan came into the squad to play alongside his mates at the beginning of the 2017 2018 season. He’ll play anywhere across the back and can come into midfield. He’s had a couple of seasons in the Northern League now and will play an important role for the Colliers this season.

Jonny is a full back who has plenty of experience in the Northern League as well as in America. An experienced face in a young midfield. Toddy signed during the 2019 2020 pre season and brings experience and knowledge to a young midfield. Currently out injured.

LEE CHAPMAN TOMMY BEST JAKE FOWLER JAMES CASSIDY

Dylan is a young full back playing his first season of Northern League football. Dylan may struggle for game time, but he’s always learning and is definitely one for the future.

Reece signed for the Colliers in late August 2021 from Sunderland West End, and he quickly impressed at full back. Reece is now a regular at full back and likes to get forward whenever possible.

Tommy signed in September 2021 from Sunderland RCA and is a very composed central/ defensive midfielder who reads the game very well. Tommy was with Hull City until under 23 level, and he spent time at Pickering Town while in Hull. Tommy’s ability just adds to a very good midfield.

THE SQUAD...

He’s a defender’s nightmare. Chases everything and he’ll get stuck in at everyone. Chips in with goals too. Kyle joined from Seaham Red Star in the 2018 2019 season and has been a real asset. Always a handful. In charge of the player’s pot and he’s vice captain for the 2022 2023 season. Son of chairman Paul Adamson who has been in the squad for four seasons now. Liam was top scorer with 22 goals two seasons ago and regularly works upfront with Jack Pounder and Josh Home Jackson. Liam has developed every year and is now one of the most crucial players in the Easington squad. Young Denny signed for the Colliers at the end of September

Jake joined the club in summer 2022 from Sunderland West End. Flash is an experienced midfielder who played for England up to under 18 level while at Middlesbrough. Since then, Jake played for Gateshead before a career in the Northern League. Cass is another who joined the club in pre season of 2021 from Sunderland RCA. Cass has struggled with a few injuries, but when on his game, he’s a superb winger.

Brad signed for the club in July 2022 from Sunderland West End. Prior to signing, Brad was a familiar face at the Welfare Park having played against the Colliers on many occasions for West End. Brad is a tall, commanding centre back who fits in the side very well.

Dylan is another new signing and another superb central midfielder. Dylan was previously with the Green Army on loan from Hartlepool United, and he's spent the last four years at Sunderland RCA. Dylan knows Luke Page well from their time together at RCA, and there won't be many/any better midfield duos and Dylan and Pagey in Northern League Division Two. He rejoined the Colliers in June 2021.

Jonny signed for the club in July 2022 from Sunderland RCA.

DYLAN ELLIOTT KYLE MIDDLETON LIAM ADAMSON DENNY TAPPING

Jack signed in the 2017 2018 season from Sunderland RCA. Jak is a talented full back who likes to get forward when given the opportunity, although he wasn’t available to play much in the 2021 2022 season. Jak can also playcentre back.

Lee joined the club in September 2020 having played for Seaham Red Star a fewyears ago. An experienced midfielder, Lee scored a free kick less than five minutes into his debut against Jarrow. He won the Durham Sunday Cup with Dawdon last year.

A2021.well known young forward who hails from the Colliery, Denny had been scoring goals from fun on a Sunday, and he soon signed a form with the Colliers. Denny scored his first Northern League goal in the 5 1 win over Esh Winning in October2021.

When Chester City were drawn away at Easington Colliery in October 2000 instead of joining my mates for a day out in the North east, I declined the invitation to continue my mission to "do the 92" by heading to Adams Park to watch Wycombe Wanderers lose 2 1 to Bristol SoCity.today I travelled to the former mining village in County Durham, where scenes for the 2000 film Billy Elliott were shot, to right that wrong of 14 years ago. Easington's biggest day came in 1955 when 4,500 spectators packed the Welfare Ground to watch the Colliery lose 2 0 to Tranmere Rovers in the first round of the FA Cup, the only time that Easington have reached the first round proper.

We caught up with the Easington Colliery captain Adam McGuinness ahead of today’s game, who’s in his second season at Easington Colliery. After seeing the pen pics, we can see you are captain of the club. How do you get the lads motivated for games?

I always get to the ground nice and early to have a bit crack and laugh with the lads before it all starts and I prefer home games, love to see the faces of everybody who helps out at the club and it always feels special on home match days. Both teams coming up against unknown opposition today, with this being the first game between the two clubs, how do you personally prepare for these sort of games?

itsaccountFormeagoodclubsocialmediaappealstoasmanyoffansaspossible, againwith wide ranging content so the feeds are always varied. Since this is the Squires Gate programme, is there anything you know about our club? No I haven’t heard about them until now, but will be keepingmy eyeoutfromnowon! What would you say is your favourite social media platform to use at the club? I have always loved Instagram as I love how visual it is, I love taking pictures myself or presenting other photographers images in a creative way. I also asenjoycreatingcontentforTikTokit ’s the platform which is the newestformetobeusing.

DependingonwhatroleI’llhaveon a matchday, my preparation will vary. If I am going to be covering a game on a social platform, I like to get myself prepared in plenty of time so I like to get to the office early and get all files set up and ready. If I’m working pitchside, again I like to be there early with all my gear and start to capture as much content as possible. One important part of matchdays is the “footy scran”, have you any favourite grounds in terms of hospitality and what is your go to choice of matchday food?

A question we have to ask. How does it feel being able to film CR7 up close every match? Do you get to speak with the squad on a personal basis? Very surreal to be so close to a United great on many occasions last season. Capturing his goals will always be a highlight for sure.

In terms of social media. What do you think makes a good club social media account?

Over the years working for Shrewsbury, we had a wide ranging experience when it came to food! The best whilst with Salop was when we played Wolves away in the FA Cup, where we got roast lamb. Since working for United, Tottenham’s food selection has probablybeenthebest.

In this week’s feature of our popular ‘Media Diaries’ feature, our Social Media Manager Dan Hayden interviews Man United’s Content Creator Matt Burgess about what goes on behind the scenes at the Premier League club. Could you tell us a bit about yourself, your role at the club and have you worked at any clubs previously? I’m Matt, I am a social media content creator at Manchester United. I’ve been at the club since September 2021. Previously I worked for Shrewsbury Town FC within their media team for four and a halfyears. How do you usually prepare your weekly content? Do you plan ahead? We tend to have a rough plan in advance however as football is an ever changing and evolving world, we have to be very reactive to those plans changing. Working at Old Trafford must be surreal in itself? In your first couple of games, did you feel nervous walking out in front 70,000 supporters? I’m a life long United fan and even though I’ve been to Old Traffordmanytimesoverthe years, nothing compares to being in the position I’m in working wonpitchside.IttrulyisaprivilegeandI ’t ever take it for granted.

Building up to the Manchester Derby. How does the atmosphere around the club feel? Would you say this is the climatic game or would you say there is one that you look forward to more? The excitement builds ahead of all fixtures but certainly as a fan, you always get extra excited ahead of Liverpool or City games. It’s been great to have Leeds back in the Premier Leaguetoo. Which grounds to you enjoy visiting the most in terms of facilities and matchday food? I didn’t go to every away ground last season, but as mentioned before Tottenham’s ground was fantastic. I’ve always wanted to go to St. James Park and managed to do that last year too. Atletico Madrid’s ground was very impressive when stood pitchsideaswell! What is your favourite memory within your time at the club? My favourite memory working for Shrewsbury was probably covering the club reaching the League One play off final in 2017/18, followed closely by that United, drawwithLiverpoolinthecup.I ’ve been very fortunate to have some amazing experiences in my first year at the club but a highlight for me has to be being able to play at Old Trafford at the end of last season!Thatwasincredible.

A North West double beckoned with Burscough at home on the Tuesday and Squires Gate on the Wednesday (10th August). Burscough wasn’t particularly memorable as a new ground a distinct lack of character compared to their old one but I had popped into Squires Gate on a previous trip to AFC Blackpool in November 2019 and I was looking forward to watching a game there. I was met on that occasion by Jay on the gate and made a mental note that their programme looked quite good so I’ve been wanting to visit ever Thesince.Squires Gate match I saw was against Irlam and was played in warm and sunny evening conditions and turned out to be an entertaining 3-3 draw.Itwasagreatadvertforthe North West Counties League although I do rate the standard anyway compared to some other leagues around the country. One particular highlight (fluke!) was that I managed to get a photo of the ball on its way into the net for Gate’s second equaliser by James Hughes. Can you spot the ball? I wonder if the chap in front of me got a good snap. I liked the ground as I do the neighbouring Wrens and AFC Blackpool as they all have character with individual built stands with no prefabricated “Atcost” style stands.

As a keen programmecollector, I reserved a copy on twitter and met Jay and Dan Hayden in the bar before the game to collect it. I wasn’t disappointed and then noticed a series of coincidences related to the fact that I am from Northampton and a season ticket holder at my local club The I used to follow the Cobblers away as well and visited Bloomfield Road a number of times over the years and it wasn’t a happy hunting ground forus. I onlysawone victoryin tenvisits when Marco Gabbiadini scored a brace for us. Any Blackpool fans

All in all it was a superb night out at School Road with Dan and Jay very friendly and enthusiastic about allthings Squires Gate and rightly proud of their programme along with James Ashton who I believe is also co editor. However, I’m afraid to say chaps that you have some stiff competitionintheshapeof

Apparently, they had three home games in a week and Tom had been moving house right in the middle of it and said he was sorry the programme wasn’t up to the usual standard! I bumped into him at the game and it turns out they normally issue a 52 pager (tonight’s being a mere 40 pages!) and he showed me one from a pre-season friendly they had v Torquay and it was superb (coincidently with a feature on the NWCFL included in it).

Incidentally, there! these page numbers pale into insignificance when I look back at a Hoddesdon Town programme from 2010 at 72 pages and Marske United at 88

Another question for the Blackpool fans who did they play in the Festival of Britain?

Finally, the last article in the excellent programme (I’d never heard of the Mitropa Cup before) mentioned Luxembourg league football including Progres OneNeidercorn.ofthe rarest programmes that I own is for a Northampton Town v Luxembourg Festival of Britain match in 1951 with the Luxembourg team made up Progres Neidercorn players.

Rest assured Dan, Jay and James as when I mentioned how good the programme was that I picked up at Squires Gate the previous week, Tom said he’d heard of you so the word is out

ONE OF THE GREATS: ELLEN WHITE // JESSE PARKER HUMPHREYS

Probably her most famous goal was against Arsenal when she was playing at Notts County. With a free kick on the edge of the area, White, Laura Bassett and Alex Greenwood crowded round the ball. England Women’s all-time greatest scorer and the Women’s Super League’s second highest goal scorer, White closes her career as one of the all time greats of women’s football, having spent 17 years terrorising defences worldwide. The list of clubs that White played for is indicative of how much the women’sgamehaschanged.

Leicester City were the only WSL team she played against without Whitescoring.scored her 50th WSL goal on 7 November 2020 as part of an 8 1 thrashing of Bristol City, becoming the second ever player after Vivianne Miedema to reach the total, and was briefly the all time leading scorer. Overall White scored 59 WSL goals, 35 with her favoured right foot, 16 with her left foot and eight with her head. None of her goals scored were penalties, and the only penalty she took in the competition against Arsenal for Notts County in April 2015 she missed.MuchofWhite’sgoalscoring came from her ability to slip away from defenders as she played on the last shoulder. White will probably be best remembered as England Women’s all time top scorer, and second on the overall list with 52 goals, just one fewer thanWayne Rooney. Her first ever England goal came at Loftus Road back in March 2010, where she scored against Austria in World Cup Qualifying. She scored regularly throughout the years when she was fit but it was the 2019 Women’s World Cup where she really had her breakout moment for WhiteEngland.had played in international tournaments before but often alongside another striker, whether that was Kelly Smith, Eni Aluko or Jodie Taylor. Under Phil Neville, however, White became the de facto number nine for England and she repaid the favour by scoring in every single game as England reached the semi final. Her six goals were not enough to win the Golden Boot as Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan had also scored as many and had more assists, but her contribution to the side was undeniable. Her iconic ‘glasses’ celebration, inspired by Anthony Modeste (White is a big fan of German football), made her instantly recognisable to the wider public who might have been watching women’s football for the first time. She was Team GB’s stand out player at the Tokyo Olympics where she was a rare bright spark in a disappointing tournament.
