Dave McCann Says Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for this afternoons home league fixture against Stockport Sports FC. First of all may I welcome Stockport's management team and all associated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home. Last Saturday’s performance and result was really pleasing and one that can hopefully kick start a period of victories in our up and coming fixtures. If someone had told me that at the start of the season we’d reach the beginning of November and have only lost 5 games out of all competitions I’d have found it very hard to believe. Every credit must go to all players involved in games for the run of results we have had but if I was to be critical it would be that we need to start turning draws into wins. We have only 4 league victories under our belts. If we are to move up the table and become a mid to top half of the table team we need to win more games rather than draw them….its that simple. Last Saturday, we had a couple of really good performances from individuals but the more pleasing aspect was how we performed as a team. The togetherness of the performance was there for all to see. The squad we have is strong, competition for places is tough. We have 8 games to play in November compared to the 4 we had in October so I’m sure the squad will be used to its maximum. Today we face Stockport Sports who, just like ourselves, are probably looking to be more consistent as soon as possible. All games in this league are tough and any team has the potential to beat another. We will have to be mentally and physically strong today if we are to gain the result we want.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture….UP THE GATE!

Squires Gate 2-2 Winsford United
The Royal British Legion Stadium Attendance: 65 Saturday 18th October 2014
Squires Gate hosted Winsford United on Saturday at the Royal British Legion Stadium, looking to improve on their 0-0 draw with St Helens last Saturday. Gate made three changes from Saturday’s draw, Mark Buchan dropped to the bench with Ryan Riley coming in, Alex Colquhoun came in for Jack Cook and Hothersall came in for Jake Forshaw. It was a fairly even start to the game with both games looking even in the opening 20. Gate's real first chance came when Chris Anderson played a clever ball down the line to Jack Sowerby. Sowerby knocked the ball back to the on -rushing Harry Dunn but his shot was saved well and Gate couldn't capitalise from the corner. Gate could have had a penalty on the 35th minute, the ball swung in the penalty area was punched by Winsford's keeper who seemed to get more of Josh Westwood's head than the ball but the ref awarded a free kick to Winsford. Gate opened the scoring on the 44th minute Jack Sowerby picking the ball up on the edge of the area after a loose pass from the Winsford goalkeeper, after beating two defenders Sowerby slot the ball into the back of the net with great confidence. Into the second half and it didn't take Gate long to double their lead. Straight from kick off Harry Dunn attacked into Winsford half and passed the ball to Sowerby, he managed to control the ball in the box and side foot the ball to score his and Gates second goal. It would be fair to say that between the 44th minute and the 48th minute were the most entertaining of the game. As Winsford took the kick off after Sowerby's second of the game they managed to get themselves back into the game. The long ball up to the Winsford winger who nodded down for Ryan Mathews to get one back on the 47th minute for Winsford. Winsford could have had a second in quick succession had it not been for the quick, cat like reflexes of Ben Fletcher who saved well with his legs. Josh Westwood had the chance to make Gate's lead comfortable but his header from the corner was cleared of the line by Winsford. Gate were made to pay in the 66th minute the ball clipped in to defender Alex Bryne at the back post who finished well to equalise for Winsford. After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said: It was a very entertaining game but one that provided us with lessons that we must learn from. From being in a position of thinking 3 points a near certainty we were grateful with 1 come the end of the game. We know what we didn't do to secure the 3 points, we were disappointed at the end of the game but we move forward and will be aiming to improve in our next game. Gate travel to Nelson on Saturday in the MEN UNITED cup. The two teams have already met once this season with Gate winning 3-0. Report by Mark Ashmore

Nelson 1-3 Squires Gate
Victoria Park Attendance: 66 Saturday 25th October 2014
Squires Gate travelled to Nelson this weekend in the Men united cup. Gate made two changes to the starting line up with Rob Henry coming in to replace Alex Colquhoun andBrett Ferguson in for Chris Anderson.
It was a fairly even start to the game with both teams having plenty of possession both looking to suss each other out early on. Gate's first real chance fell to top scorer Jack Sowerby but his snap shot was the wrong side of the post. Gate could have been ahead with 30 minutes gone but after beating his man Alex Murphy's shot was cleared of the line. Murphy wouldn't be denied a second time though good work from Harry Dunn to feed the ball through to find the run of Murphy who slotted the ball home to put Gate one up. The second half started with the home side making a triple substitution. But it was Gate who could have had a second Hothersall's ball into the box but no Gate player could make any contact. It was the home side who drew back, a free kick just outside the area was rifled in by Danny Mahoney the Gate wall could have perhaps done better. To their credit Gate's heads didn't drop and the away side had the chance to go ahead, Alex Murphy playing the ball across the box but substitute Jake Forshaw couldn't connect at the back post. It would be Murphy who was again involved and can add another assist to his tally, his free kick was floated into the back post to find Josh Westwood who couldn't have connected any cleaner with the ball to make it 2-1 to Squires Gate. Gate put the game out of sight when Jack Sowerby scored his 13th of the season in all competitions he beat two defenders before slotting home showing great composure and technique. After the game Gate manager said "I'm very pleased with our performance today, we were solid, disciplined and effective throughout. We dealt with them with what they had to offer and looked dangerous going forward. We need to take today's performance into next Saturday's game so that we start picking up victories in the league. Gate were drawn out of the pot for the next round after the game and will play Winsford at home in the next round. Gate return to league action next Saturday when they host Stockport Sports at home. Reported By Mark Ashmore
Nelson 1-3 Gate
Match Preview Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for today’s NWCFL fixture between Squires Gate and Stockport Sports. The two sides meet for only the 5th time in their history. Today marks a year since I first started working at this very special club, and would just like to say thank you to everyone at the club who has made me feel welcome over the past year, and I’m sure I will be here for many seasons to come. Since the last home game against Winsford United, Squires Gate have played one game, which was away at Nelson in the Men United Cup 2nd round. A very slow start to the game, before Squires Gate took a goal advantage just before the break. A great performance in the second half, give Gate a deserved 3 points. We will now face Winsford United at home in the 3rd round of the Men United Cup. Now, today’s visitors have not had the start they would of hoped for, not winning in their last 6 at home, and only winning 1 of their last 6 away from home. I’m sure they will be looking to get their season back on track, and will be hoping for 3 points today. Stockport Sports have scored only 27 goals this season, which is however 4 more then Gate have scored. Sports also have a record of losing to teams in the bottom half of the table, which they will want to change as soon as possible. Jack Sowerby will be wanting to add to his goals tally for this season, bagging half of Gate’s goals. The striker has scored 11 goals this season, Squires Gate have scored 23 altogether. Definitely a player that other clubs will be wanting to keep quiet during the game. On the back of 2 defeats, Sports go into today’s game 2 places behind Squires Gate, 4 points behind having played 3 games more. So both sides will want to pick up 3 points today to try and climb away from the relegation zone. For those who haven’t seen the first round draw of the FA Cup, last seasons NWCFL Premier Division side Norton United have been draw at home to Gateshead. After a superb win the other night against Nuneaton Town of the conference. A great win for non league football. AFC Fylde got a brilliant draw, away at league 2 side Plymouth Argyle. Best of luck to both sides. We are also selling poppies in remembrance of the soldiers that died during both World War I and World War II. So, please be sure to donate and pick up a poppy from the bar. All money will go to the Royal British Legion, a great cause for our war heroes. Lest We Forget!! We would like to thank you for your continued support, and we hope to see you at our next home game against Bootle on Saturday 15th November. Enjooooooy the game! By Daniel Hayden. Programme Editor.
Stockport Sports Stockport Sports Nickname: “The Saxons Founded: 1990 Capacity: 2.300 Ground: The Neil Rourke Memorial Stadium Manager: Peter White The
2012/2013 season will mark a new chapter in the life of Woodley Sports FC. The club will undergo a complete makeover which will see them benefit from a full-time status, a new management team and even a new name. Stockport Sports FC will be born and their first leader will be Aston Villa legend Peter Withe. The 60-year old has returned from life living down under in Australia to take up the position and attempt to lead Stockport back up the football pyramid, from their current position in the North West Counties Football League. It could be seen as something of a coup for the club to have attracted Withe who represented England 11 times during the 1980s and also won a European Cup with Aston Villa but certainly proves that both club and manager have the same lofty ambitions. Withe will not come to Stockport as a managerial novice though, having already experienced life in the managerial hot seats of Wimbledon (1991), Thailand (1998-2002) and Indonesia (20042007). It is with Stockport though that Withe will want to really make his mark as a manager, as he joins up with a brand new squad who are all hungry for success and want to be competing with rivals Stockport County in the near future. The Club has collected a group of hungry young players who, with help from Withe, will be hoping to make their name at Stockport Sports. They will have the chance to do so on a full-time basis too, something which only a small amount of non-league clubs can boast. It gives local players who have fallen through the footballing net the chance to reignite their careers at Stockport, meaning promising individuals who may not get what they deserve at a club can still have the chance to make themselves a star at The Saxons. Another change the club will foresee is the changing of the Clubs nickname. Woodley Sports were affectionately known as The Steelmen but the new regime will see the Club being referred to as The Saxons. The nickname pays homage to the rich Saxon heritage of Stockport and pays tribute to those who named the town in the 18th Century. Despite all the changes perhaps overwhelming some, Stockport Sports will not neglect the community in its bid to become a major non-league side in the future. The Neil Rourke Stadium will boast a gymnasium which will be open for the public to use and the Stockport Sports Trust are also investing significant amounts of money to bring more full size and 5-a-side pitches to the community of Stockport in the hope that Stockport Sports can become a source of pride for a local community, as well as a blossoming football club.
Last Time Out Gate 1-2 Stockport Sports Without a game since 1st of the month, Squires Gate, were home to Stockport Sports, their first opponents on the first day of the season on 3rd of August 2013, and were keen to get revenge for the 3-0 defeat. But with 5 changes from the side that went down to table toppers Runcorn Linnets, two weeks ago. Gate kicked off with a strong wind behind them, but it was more of a disadvantage than a help, as the ball seemed to have a mind of it’s own, when Gates forwards tried to beat a strong Stockport defence, who pushed forward from the start. When Gate failed to fully clear their area, on 11 mins. Ben Halfacre, gave keeper Dave Rogerson no chance shooting through a crowded goal area to put the visitors into the lead. Despite pushing into the visitors half, on both flanks and down the middle there were only a couple of chances that were not converted. Then from a corner Stockport added to their lead, when Sam Pollard leaped unchallenged to head past the diving Dave Rogerson, who could not save despite getting a hand to the ball, on 44 mins. The second half was only two mins old when defender Neil Unsworth, up for a corner, volleyed home Gate’s goal on 47 mins. This seemed to spark more life into the home side and they made attacking moves, but without causing problems for the visitors keeper Ritchie Torkington, and it looked as though Stockport were going to seal the game when they were awarded a penalty, but with the visitors seeming to dispute who was going to take the spot kick, it was blasted over, giving Gate a chance to get something from the game. Marc Mullan starting his first game, covered most of the pitch, and was unfortunate when he broke free of his marker, to get a shot on the run, but it was inches wrong side of the post. But despite the addition of Sam Farrow from the bench, after a long injury, the visitors held out and took all the points Player Manager Dave McCann's opinion of the game was, Our 1st half performance has cost us the game. We could have one in at half time 0-0 and we'd have still had a mountain to climb based on our character shown and performance levels. However playing like we did and being 2-0 down meant we were chasing the game all the 2nd half. We need to be in the game from the first whistle and not rely on a few choice words at half time to get us going

NWCFL Newsletter The main focus was on cup action at the weekend, with 32 clubs involved in 2nd Round ties in the Men United Cup. Game of the day was at the Select Security Stadium, where Widnes and St Helens Town ended the afternoon tied at 4-4, with Widnes winning the resultant penalty shoot out. It was a result few would have envisaged at half time with the Saints 41 up, but a spirited Widnes fight back in the second half led to Alex Davies grabbing a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time. The tie was one of four that went to a penalty shoot out. In a thriller at the AM Property Group Stadium, Ashton Town and West Didsbury shared six goals, with West eventually winning the shoot out 5-4, and the other two games finished 1-1. A last minute own goal saved Glossop at home to AFC Blackpool before they went on to win on penalties, and at Hanley Town it was the visitors Rochdale Town who emerged victorious, converting all five of their spot kicks. One of the more eye catching results of the day was at the MBS Stadium where Cammell Laird 1907 beat Premier Division league leaders Runcorn Linnets 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Craig Cairns after just two minutes. A number of clubs recorded impressive away wins, most notably Atherton Collieries who won 3-0 at Ashton Athletic, with Ben Hardcastle, Mark Battersby and Jordan Cover on target for Colls. No less impressive were Runcorn Town, who won 41 at Congleton Town after going a goal down in the 5th minute. Goals from Ryan Mitchell, Lee Duckworth and Daley Woods saw 1874 Northwich take a three goals lead inside 19 minutes at Barnoldswick, although the home side staged a fightback before eventually losing 3-2. Jack Sowerby's 12th goal of the season helped Squires Gate to a 3-1 win at Nelson, and in an entertaining game at Daisy Hill, two goals from Michael Blundell contributed to a 3-2 win for Alsager Town. Abbey Hey, winners of the competition in 2010, beat last season's finalists Maine Road 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium, and there was heartbreak for Irlam at the Barton Stadium when a Brian Matthews penalty on 87 minutes and a last minute winner from Alex Byrne snatched a 2-1 win for Winsford United.
