“You can see they have goals in them, this is as tougher game as any” Good afternoon and welcome to The Brian Addison Stadium for today’s FA Vase second qualifying round match with West Allotment Celtic. Firstly I would like to start off this column by giving a warm welcome to our opponents today, and I hope they have a safe journey home.

a game so it is going to be as tough as any game we face in this league. The games are coming up thick and fast, but I’d like to thank the gate fans for their continued support to the lads!

I am expecting a response today, we were in control Enjoy the game! of the game on Saturday and we let a 2 goal slip, Andy granted it was to a Bootle side who are full of talent and confidence but we should not be complacent and I was personally disappointed that we couldn’t hold on, or to at least come away with a point. At the end of the game, the lads knew it was a bit disappointing, but we can’t dwell on the last result and we must be always preparing for the next match. We’re not worried at all, we know what we need to do on the pitch, and we practice what we can in training, but sometimes teams are better on the day and the luck doesn’t always go our way. Bootle are a solid team and they will be in the mix for promotion this season without a doubt, but there is still no reason as to why we can’t go on a run and get ourselves in the top half. As I said at the start of the season, we have our targets and we want to aim as high as we can. Today we forget about the league and we focus on progressing in this historic competition, it’s a chance to really get our confidence going again and kick start a good run. If you look at West Allotment’s results this season, you can see that they have goals in them, they have the ability to score and I think they have scored something around 30 goals already this season, so we need to make sure we are prepared and don’t lose focus because if we switch off, then it could be costly. In the league this season in fact, they are yet to lose 4

WELCOMING OUR OPPONENTS FROM WEST ALLOTMENT CELTIC Formed in 1928 in West Allotment, a village in North Tyneside, the club played in junior leagues for their first 55 years. They then joined the Northern Alliance in 1983 and won the title 8 times before joining the Northern League in 2004. The club then won the Northern League Second Division at the first attempt, gaining promotion to Division One, where they remained until 2011 when they were relegated back to Division Two. West Allotment have participated in the FA Vase since the mid-1980s and have reached the 4th round (the last 32 stage) twice in their history, in successive seasons 2003–04 and 2004–05.

Welcome to the Committee President Roland Mather Roland is a former player with over 300 games under his belt. He succeeded his father Joe as chairman and carried out this role for 12 years before retiring and becoming president. Chairman Joe Wilson Jim is another former player who played around 250 games for the club. Jim became chairman, when Mather moved up to president 5 years ago, he had previously acted as the club physio for more than 15 years.

Following a frantic period of activity, the club found another new home, this time outside North Tyneside at Druid Park, Woolsington in Newcastle upon Tyne, formerly the base of the long defunct Newcastle Blue Star club. So, although the club moved ever further from West Allotment itself, it overcame a fraught period when its very existence was at extreme risk; indeed, the club had tendered its resignation from the Northern League, so desperate was the situation. Yet, typical of the club throughout its history, it found strength in adversity and celebrated its ninetieth year on a sound footing and heading upwards once more. 8

Programme Editor/Press Officer Stephen Allot Stephen is the son of former player Eric, who edits the matchday programme, as well as doubling up as the matchday secretary. Club Photographer Graeme Jackson Graeme is the son of the late John Jackson who is a club legend, Graeme carrying on the great Jackson tradition with his association with WACFC. Committee Member Michael Wilson Michael is another former player and the son of the late Bob Wilson, Michael has proved to be an invaluable member of the club.

MEET THE MANAGER

After providing sterling support to Paul Bennett and Andrew Wood during the 2017/18 season campaign, Alan Gate stepped up to become joint manager of the club in July 2018, sharing the reins as team manager with Jay Bates, who arrived at Allotment after a successful spell with Seaton Deaval in the Northern Alliance. The third of the management team is Gary Somerville, who is assistant manager and was also at Seaton Deaval with Jay. Alan was formerly on the coaching staff at Cullercoats FC, chairman and coach at Wallsend Boys Club, and was also club secretary and coach at Walker Central FC. He holds a FA Level 2 coaching badge, and is also qualified as a Level 2 personal fitness instructor.. He has been involved in grassroots for over 30 years. Jay is also registered as a player for Allotment, but started his career at Walker Central . He had attracted the attention of the likes of Newcastle United when he was a junior, but he decided to join the army instead, where he forged an impressive playing career whilst attending to his army commitments. Jay also possesses a Level 2 coaching badge and created very useful teams at both Seaton Deaval and Walker Central. The trio guided West Allotment to a sixth placed finished last season, and they have built a strong squad with a lot of depth, and that has clearly shown in their recent results this campaign as they are top of the league, unbeaten in all competitions. West will be one of the favourites for promotion this season, and Alan and his team can take credit for building on a good squad, bringing in some decent talent who have only made the team better.

In this issue, Jason Hodgson and Ian Carney give us an insight into our opponents today West Allotment Celtic, and what we can expect from the North East side. First of all, how did you get into watching football, and more importantly West Allotment Celtic? JH: My grandad used to take me along to Appleby Park to watch North Shields in the Northern League back in the late 70s and early 80s. I then started going to Roker Park to watch Sunderland as the then Black Cats captain Rob Hindmarch was from the village that I lived in. I have started following West Allotment in the last couple of years as my son is a player, although I can recall attending games at Backworth Miners Welfare when Allotment were in the Northern Alliance. IC: I started watching football as a kid, and I have just started watching allotment this season. What was your first game? Do you remember the score? JH: My first North Shields game was an FA Cup qualifying round against Brandon United, I think the score was, 1-1 but the abiding memory was at the end of the game when a Shields supporter ran onto the pitch and bared his backside in front of the Brandon fans declaring “this is what I think of Brandon. My first 10

Sunderland game was a 2-2 draw, with Arsenal, Gary Rowell came on as a sub and scored two in the last 10 minutes to rescue a point. The first Allotment game that springs to mind would be my sons debut on Boxing Day 2017, when we played Heaton Stannington away where unfortunately we lost 2-1.

IC: My first ever game to watch as a kid was at St James Park, Newcastle vs QPR. Kevin Keegan scored on his debut, 1982. My first allotment game was this season, when we beat Forest Hall away, 6-1. What are your expectations for this season? JH: We have started the season well and I am confident that if we can get another 18 points then we will not be relegated.

IC: I have no expectations for this season, just enjoy watching the footy, and take each game as it comes, and with the good start that Allotment have had, if we stay focused then promotion is achievable. Who has been the toughest opposition to come to West Allotment Celtic? Who do you hate playing in your league? JH: I would say that the toughest I have seen would be Newcastle Benfield who Allotment met in the League Cup last season. Benfield won 3-1 and were pretty much in control for most of the game. I was glad to see Thornaby get promoted at the end of last season as my last two previous visits there have been heavy defeats, we never seem to do well against Heaton Stannington either! IC: I’m still working it out as this is my first season watching allotment, but I’m sure there are some really tough opposition in our league! What do you think makes non league unique? JH: In the last round of the vase, I travelled on the team bus with the players, management and committee and the craic was brilliant. You don’t get that in league football at all. IC: There are hundreds of teams up and down the country that rely on volunteers to keep the clubs afloat, and to play football week in, week out. Do you have any rituals or superstitions that you have to do before going to a game? JH: I don’t have any real matchday rituals, although I do like to watch the game from the same position regardless of the ground. IC: Not really, no.

What has been the best game you have ever seen? For Allotment, and in general? JH: The best Allotment game would be last season’s 5-1 win against NL Division 1 team Ashington which was in the Northumberland Senior Cup, it should have been 10 that night but for the excellent display of their keeper. Best game I have witnessed live would be the play off final in 1998, Sunderland v Charlton, 4-4 AET and 7-6 on penalties.

IC: This is my first season watching allotment, so far it would have to be the 8-2 win over Billingham Synthonia. Best game in general, has to be when Newcastle beat Barcelona 3-2 back in 1997 and Asprilla got a hattrick! What has been the best goal that you have ever seen? JH: Well I had never seen anybody lob his own keeper from 30 yards so Troddy’s effort last Saturday is right up there! IC: Peter Beardsley vs Brighton 1984, when he chips the England keeper Joe Corrigan after a sliding tackle on Eric Young. If you were to sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, wages paid for, who would you sign and why? JH: Allisson Becker - Not sure about our current No.1 Jordan Henderson - To help Gil when we switch from our usual 4-1-5 formation to our less adventurous, 4-2-4 approach. Virgil Van Dijk - Need cover for Erra and Mickey Scott IC: Raheem Sterling - He’s got pace, and he scores goals. David Silva - Great vision, and skill. Virgil Van Dijk - Reads the game well, and he is a commanding defender. 11

You are the manager of a 5 a side team. You can pick 2 PL legends, past or present, and 3 WAC players. Who makes your team? JH: Finn - I have to live with him if I didn’t pick him! Baxter - His sponsor is a smashing bloke! Jay Bates - The Walker Dome Warrior Roy Keane Cristiano Ronaldo IC: Finn, Era, Baxter, Keegan and Gascoigne.. In your opinion, which teams do you think will get promoted and relegated this season? Where do you think West will finish? JH: I think four go up from Northern League 2 this season so I would like to think that Allotment would be in the mix along with Redcar Athletic, Ryton, Crawcrook and I do think that Heaton Stannington will recover from their slow start. At the bottom, it could be curtains for Durham City, who were reprieved last season and are bottom already. IC: Allotment will finish top 3, alongside Redcar Ath, and Willington. I think Durham City, and Brandon Utd will be relegated. Which grounds do you like visiting the most? JH: I always like to visit a new ground that I haven’t been to. Locally Hebburn Town have a good setup with an excellent clubhouse. IC: I like visiting all grounds, as they all have their own characteristics.

Have you been to Squires Gate before? JH: Never been before, so I am looking for ward to it! IC: No With it being FA Vase weekend, who has been the best opposition that you have come against or visited in the cup and how far do you think you will go? JH: This is only my fourth vase game, last season we had a great result beating Yorkshire Amateurs 3-0 at 12

home before pushing high flying Bishop Auckland to extra time before losing 3-1 away. Hopefully the lads will progress through today but I think it will be tough. IC: Harrogate Railway last round, and with a bit of luck who knows how far we can go. Have you ever been to Wembley? If so what was the score, and what is your dream scenario there? JH: I have been to the old and new Wembley a number of times for England games, play off finals, league cup finals and an FA Cup final, I also went to the football league v rest of the world game in 1987. The ROW team had Maradona and Platini playing for them in midfield. My dream scenario would be seeing my lad get the chance to play there, and a win today would make that dream a step closer. IC: Yes, Newcastle vs Chelsea FA Cup semi final. Dream scenario FA Cup final would be Newcastle 5 Sunderland 0. Your prediction for today’s game? JH: I think it will be tough for Allotment against a higher placed opposition but if we take our chances then there could be an upset on the cards. It is unlikely to be 0-0 that’s for sure. I’m going to say a 2-1 win for West Allotment Celtic. IC: 2-1 Allotment.

W.A CELTIC

Tony Fawcett rang the changes for this league cup group game handing RACA debuts to Josh Graham, Ryan Graham, Dan Blewitt and Daniel Ord, mindful of Saturday's FA Vase game & the new boys certainly disappoint. The first half was a tepid affair in truth, with little to enthuse the 71 spectators. On 10 minutes, Ord jinked past two West players & curled in an ambitious shot from a fair distance out but Finlay Hodgson in the Celtic goal had ample time to position himself for an easy catch. Josh Graham was called into action in the 16th minute to block a close range effort from Matthew Hayden as chances in the early exchanges were at a premium. Liam Anderson went on one of his trademark runs up the left wing on 26 minutes & fired across a low cross that was waiting for a touch from a Ryton boot but no-one in yellow was quite forward enough to apply the finishing touch. The latter stages of the half saw a few half chances, Jamie Dunn & James Thompson bringing comfortable saves from Hodgson while Allotment's own debutant Shane Donaghey got a header on target on 43 minutes which Graham gathered safely. Just before the interval Dean Walker had a good chance to put the hosts ahead but could only look on in disappointment as he screwed his shot wide from inside the box HT WEST ALLOTMENT 0 RACA 0 second half was to be more eventful and entertaining & Ryan Graham almost marked his debut with a goal as a 53rd minute scramble in the West box culminated with the Albion man's stab of the ball trundle wide amid a melee of legs.

14

1

RYTON&CRAWCROOK

After playing second fiddle for most of the first half, Ryton were enjoying dominating this early part of the half, a Thompson cross from the left causing mild panic in the home defence until Hodgson dived on the ball to snuff out the danger. West were pinned into their own half for long periods although an impressive break from the hosts on 65 minutes finished with Abubakir Salim only poking his shot straight at Graham when he will have felt he should have done better. The Ryton pressure did result in a breakthrough when Thompson was tripped in the box & David Below duly despatched the penalty to break the deadlock & threaten Celtic's unbeaten start to the campaign. As it was, taking the lead was like prodding the wasp's nest with a stick as West woke from their slumber to immediately pile the pressure on their rivals. Jack Errington brought a spectacular save from Graham when his header was acrobatically tipped over the bar on 74 minutes, but a minute later the pressure paid off for the men in green and white when Shane Jones unleashed a piledriver that clipped the inside of Graham's far post to restore parity. As the Albion players' tanks were rapidly emptying, West were in for the kill, though Michael Trudd after creating space for himself, chose to square the ball in the box when the shot looked the better option on 77 minutes. A Donaghey free kick clipped the crossbar via a deflection on 83 minutes while a minute later Walker brought another good save from Graham, this time diving low to block a powerful drive. Thankfully for the jaded visitors they hung on for a pleasing draw while West Allotment could take some relief in keeping their unbeaten run going.

We interviewed West Allotment Celtic midfielder Michael Trodd, and asked him about his time at the club, and which PL players he would like to see at the club. What encouraged you to start playing football? What position do you usually play? My dad took me to his mates team when I was younger and it went from there, I play centre mid. Do you have any pre match superstitions, or any rituals that you have to do before any game? No, just turn up and play my best. I don’t believe in superstitions or anything like that. Who is the toughest opponent you have played against? Ryan Higgins, who actually now plays with us. He is a solid defender, and makes any strikers day difficult. What has been your most memorable moment at West Allotment Celtic? Two weeks ago, I scored a 50 yard volley with my weaker foot, so that has to be up there. I don’t think I could do that again if I tried. You are DJ before the game, what is the first song on your playlist in the dressing room? Up your game - The Risk ft Gaz If you were to play alongside one player in the world, who would you pick and why?

Has to be Lionel Messi, he is the king of football and I think every single player could learn something from him. He would be a great addition to Allotment. You can sign 2 PL players for WAC, who would you sign and why? Kevin De Bruyne - Can pick out a pass anywhere. Mohammed Salah - Clinical. If you could play in any stadium in the world, where would you pick? Camp Nou, Barcelona What is the most embarrassing memory you have as a footballer? Once had a shot in the warm up that hit Ryan Higgins in the face, which resulted in him passing out and having an accident in his pants. Hilarious. You are the manager of a 5 a side team You can pick 2 players from WAC, and 3 PL legends. Who makes your team? Jay Bates Rio Ferdinand Micky Scott Thierry Henry Alan Shearer Prediction for today’s game? 2-1 to West Allotment 17

In this feature, we get the views from home fans and ask them questions about their time watching Squires Gate, generic football questions, and their memorable moments. This week, Alan Davis is in the hot seat. Do you remember your first ever football game? What encouraged you to start watching football? My Dad was the person who gave me the bug to start watching football, both league and non league. I'm from Wolverhampton originally, so my first match was Wolves vs Bristol City in 1973 in the FA Cup 4th round. Wolves won 1-0 and my hero John Richards scored the goal. I was hooked from there. What do you think makes non league unique? Non league to me is unique because of the passion of the people who keep clubs going when they could easily be doing other things. In the days of remote Premier league clubs as well, you feel connected to your local club. Do you have any memorable games that you have watched live, or in general? Any favourite games? I've seen many memorable games, one being seeing Wolves win the league cup against Nottingham Forest in 1980. Another being when we won the Freight Rover trophy in 1988 against Burnley. Both clubs had 24

crashed through the leagues and for both it was the start of a long climb back. What other teams do you keep an eye on results of? Apart from Wolves, I lived in the lakes for a few years and went to see Morecambe play. They are a great club and always survive against the odds. Also East Fife who I got into from my Dad as like Wolves they play in gold and black. Again a lovely friendly club. years ago. I couldn't wait to come back. What was your first Squires Gate game? What is it that makes non league different to the higher leagues? Sorry can't remember exactly who my first Gate game was, but it would have been in the early 1990s. Loved the experience and when I came back from the lakes 3 As before really I love how passionate non league fans are and how you can strike up a conversation with anyone at a game. My first local non league team were Willenhall Town in the West Midlands, who in their heyday got to the FA Vase final and played Crewe in the first round of the FA Cup. Now they have no ground and have struggled, but summed up my love of non league.

What has been your favourite Gate game? Favourite game was probably against Burscough last season when we won 6-0 and could have won by far more. A great all round team performance and really enjoyable. If you were to re watch one game, not knowing the outcome of it and being able to watch events as they unfold, which game would you pick? There are so many, but in 2003 Wolves were 3 down to Leicester at half time and won 4-3. Now that was a match Who do you think has been the toughest opposition to come to The Brian Addison Stadium? Hard to say, the obvious ones are Fylde and Blackpool in friendlies, but City of Liverpool last year were a tough team. What is the best ground that you have been to? In non league and in league football? (One of each) In the league it has to be Molineux and in non league Stockport County fans make a good atmosphere. If you were to have a 5 a side team of 2 Gate players, and 3 players from the English leagues, who would make your team? Gate past and present would be Gal Pett and Ric Sear. For the league I would go for Kevin de Bruyne, Raul Jimenez and the great Kevin Ellison. As a fan, do you have any match day rituals or superstitions? No superstitions these days, I feel it's either your day or it's not. As a kid though I would do everything from the same pants if we'd won, to always taking a Mars bar and many other things! If you were allowed to bring in 3 PL players, past or present to Squires Gate on a free transfer. Who would you sign and why? A really tough question. I would randomly go for Steve Bull for the goals, Eric Cantona for the entertainment and Gordon Banks to keep a clean sheet. It could be many others though... Predictions for today's game? Gate to win of course, 2-0

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid .Last week while frantically working towards yet another print deadline, I came across a story which certainly made me smile. As they jubilantly travelled back from their FA Vase victory at Bacup Borough two weekends ago, the players and staff at Grimsby Borough found themselves in a scenario fit for a Hollywood thriller as their coach ended up perched on the edge of a 45 foot ravine! They had only just set off on the journey from The Borough’s West View home when their coach driver suddenly took a rather perilous wrong turn. “When it crashed we started singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning!’ to the driver,’” said Grimsby boss Daniel Barrett. “Then the bus tilted and we started to realise that things may be a bit more serious! ”We had stayed in the bar after the match for a little bit and were still very much at the beginning of the trip home.” Nevertheless the group was determined to make the best of the situation and set out in search of a pub.

However, in deepest rural Lancashire, this proved more difficult than expected. Barrett continued: “We ended up walking about five miles! “We stopped off at a petrol station and bought some drinks. We had our portable speakers and were singing all the way, I don’t really know what the local residents were thinking. “When we eventually found a pub the people running it were so helpful and said that we could stay there for the night. “It was a pretty surreal evening but we certainly made sure that we made the most of the situation. “Thankfully we are at home in the next round so there won’t be a repeat!” While this represents a rather funny tale which will certainly be remembered by those involved for a long time, I think it also demonstrates one of the best things about playing football at this level. In an age of over protected and out of touch professionals, this kind of story would never have happened in the higher divisions. A huge part of Non-League football is about enjoyment and about getting away from the rigours of another working week to play the game for the love of it with people that you get along with. Of course, everyone wants success and to move up the pyramid but Non-League football also has that lovely human element of regular people enjoying their weekends while also trying to fulfil their dreams in the game. It is for these quirky tales why people like myself have come to love Non-League football and everything that it represents.

Charlton’s play off win at Wembley was special but the season we won League One back in 2012, was very memorable.
