THE BOSS ANDY CLARKSON “ WE HAVE MIXED RESULTS IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS AS WE HAVE GIVEN DEBUTS AND GAMES TO NUMBER OF YOUNG LADS WHO HAVE COME IN AND DONE WELL” I would like to welcome the players, committee and supporters from West Didsbury and Chorlton football club for today's match.

We have had mixed results in the past few weeks as we have given debuts and games to a number of young lads who have come in and done well . Plus we have had a number of injuries and lads away but hopefully apart from gal we are nearly back to full strength. Our main priority is to keep getting results in the league and take one game at a time plus the FA Vase game coming up in October . I hope today's match is very entertaining and I would appreciate you getting behind our lads as you always do . Enjoy the match

Clarky

Tuesday 25th September 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium //Attendance:54 Squires Gate exited the Lancashire Trophy at the first time of asking when an experimental side lost 2-0 at home to Padiham. Manager Andy Clarkson handed debuts to keeper Jack Hargreaves, midfielder Jack Webster and striker Danny Squires as he looked to review the progress of his young stars at the club. Gate showed bright starts early on and got in behind Padiham when Brad Jones sent over a cross field pass to Jordan Salthouse but he couldn’t get s cross into the box. Padiham took the lead in the game after the 13th minute. After early pressure from Gate Padiham hit Clarkson’s side on the break and forced Jordan O’Mahoney into a last ditch tackle which the referee felt was a penalty. Liam O’Neill stepped up and fired past Jack Hargreaves to give the visitors the lead. The visitors were again awarded a penalty on 30 minutes after another defensive error but this time Jack Hargreaves guessed the right way to save O’Neill’s second of the night. In the first minute of the second half, Padiham doubled their lead. O’Neill again the thorn in Gate’s side. He picked up the ball outside the box before firing past Hargreaves with a shot with the outside of his boot.

wo goals before half time set the visitors away with Linnets having another ruled out for offside. A further three goals came in the second half without reply from Gate who are still looking for their first home win of the season. Goalkeeper Nick Webb made his debut for the club after Ben Fletcher was still struggling with a knock picked up against Radcliffe on Monday night. The debutant was called into action after just two minutes when he had to be alert. He pushed the testing shot up in the air, before catching the ball. Moments later it was Carroll who had to be alert to knock the ball out for a corner. It was from that corner that the first goal would come. The corner was cleared to the edge of the box where a Linnets man played it back in to find Wellstead who turned and fired past Webb. The visitors would then score a second goal on 23 minutes but that effort would be ruled out in a very late decision by the linesman for offside. Gate’s best chance of the first came in the 33rd minute. Jack Williams worked hard to win the ball back on the edge of Runcorn Linnet’s box. He then squared the ball to Gal Pett, but Pett fired his shot over the bar. The visitors would grab their second goal just before the half time whistle. Gate failing to clear the ball in the box which fell to Paul Shanley who fired past Webb to double the lead. Half time: Squires Gate 0-2 Runcorn Linnets Much like the start of the first half, it would be the visitors who would start the half the better side. They extended their lead on 49 minutes with perhaps the easiest goal of the afternoon. Midfielder Michael Simpson allowed too much time and space to walk through Gate’s defence unchallenged to score. Gate made a double change looking to freshen things up with both Dean Ing and Tarren Moxon coming back from injury and both making a decent impact. Both showed attacking intent and caused Linnets defence some problems. But despite their impact, it would be Linnets who would strike again. The shot from distance from Mark Houghton looked saveable but just sneaked in tight past the post. Linnets would then add another on 75 minutes as Gate changed to three at the back, looking to get a goal back. Adam Jones at the back-post volleying in a deep cross for the classy finish. Late on for Linnets the visitors could have had another two goals. Firstly manager Danny Penswick cleared the ball off the line, before a shot from outside the box cannoned off the post.

HISTORY OF THE WEST West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in Chorlton in 1996, and made plans to restore the ground and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. New changing rooms and clubhouse facilities were completed aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds and in time to start the 1997-98 season at this new home. A further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of the club’s centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, also resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills and the Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League. Plans were made to lease adjacent land long term for junior football to deliver the club Vision to be a FA Charter Standard Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Floodlights were erected in July 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-12 as a Step 7 club. Election to the Step 6 and the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season finishing in 3rd position to secure promotion to Step 5, guaranteeing a first ever FA Cup place and winning the Div1 Trophy. 2013-14 saw a strong recovery from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish in the Premier Division. Two new stands were then installed to improve spectator facilities and the new grass pitches were laid out on adjoining land as part of the long term development plan. Further historic milestones in 2013-14 were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup quickly followed by a 2-1 first FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. The following season saw the club experience something of an erratic start in the League, as well as losing to Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik League [North] in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk over by the FA in the previous round against NWCFL new club, Cammell Laird 1907. Rossington were FA Vase opponents for the second successive year and again defeated 2-1, this time at home, before West lost 1-2 to eventual finalists Glossop North End. Some good mid season results garnered enough points to finish 16th in the table, well clear of trouble, with a final home game 2-0 victory over Runcorn Linnets signing off manager Andy Nelson’s six meteoric season’s in style. 2015-16 proved to be a record breaking season in a number of ways for West. After a slightly erratic start to the season under new manager Steve Settle, a series of good results from September onwards saw the club rise up the table eventually finishing in a record 5th place. The major highlight of the season had to be the record breaking 15-1 FA Vase win over Dinnington Town, this being the highest ever win both in the Vase as a competition and by any NWCFL club throughout history. Progression was also made off the field with new facilities at Hardy Farm opened by local MP Jeff Smith. Plans were also made to expand the clubhouse and spectator facilities at Brookburn Road. The season was to have a sad end with the death of club secretary Rob Turley, a man who had been involved with West Didsbury & Chorlton for over 40 years. But with a strong volunteer base and progress being made on and off the field, the club is in safe hands with a bright future ahead. 2016/17 saw the club finihsed in 6th place but finished with both a record points total and number of goals scored notching 106 league goals. The club also saw a record average attendance as almost 5,000 people attended matches at Brookburn Road with a club record 674 in attendance for the South Manchester Derby against Maine Road.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WEST WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON DOS SANTOS 30

1 2 1874 NORTHWICH KENNERLEY 20 74

SATURDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2018/THE RECREATION GROUND/HT:1-1/ATT:364

1874 Northwich regained their stranglehold over West as a pointless September continued at Brookburn Road. West’s victory in the same fixture last April was their first over 1874 in 11 attempts, but this was normal service resumed as Taylor Kennerley scored either side of half time to hand the Greens their second league win of the season and ensure Junior Dos Santos’ equaliser was for naught. Both sides woke up on Saturday morning firmly at the wrong end of the table with a solitary win each to their names, and frayed nerves were evident in an opening period where free-kicks outnumbered successful passes. It took 20 minutes for the first opportunity of any note, and it was enough for 1874 to open the scoring – Marcus Burgess did well to deflect a low shot away with his feet, but Kennerley was in the right place to snaffle the rebound. West, again without the injured Ashley Leather, were struggling to make any impact in the Greens’ half but an equaliser did arrive just after the half-hour. Joe Shaw collected a deep cross and found Dos Santos, who took aim from 30 yards and cashed in as 1874 keeper James Coates could only palm the ball into the bottom corner. WEST JUNIOR ROUND UP JUNIORS | Weekend Round Up (September 22nd-23rd)

Positive showings for younger age groups It was a great weekend for West Under-11s as they defeated Urmston Meadowside Santos at Hardy Farm. A Ted Christon hat-trick, a George Roskell brace and one from Isaac Marshall ensured West a 6-4 win in a thrilling encounter. Meanwhile the Under 12’s also played out a thriller as they drew 3-3 Alderley United Warlocks at home. Sam Maher will get the plaudits for his hattrick but it the whole team earned the credit with an excellent performance with ‘heaps of heart’ against a very good Warlocks side. Mixed Start for Under-9s The Under-9s Eagles kick started their Purple league campaign with a fine 3-0 victory over Trafford AFC. Goals from Sacha Lerebours, Frankie Farman and Nico Malik set them on their way with Isaac Power earning the player of the match award. In the Red League, it was a somewhat tougher start for the Under-9s Owls who lost 9-4 to Mobberley despite a pair of braces from Jude Pinson (2) and Oliver Copley-Gould (2). Goals, Goals, Goals for Under-13s The Under-13s don’t do dull games with no less than 25 goals between the Badgers and Magpies games at the weekend. Unfortunately for the ‘Badpies’ they were both on the end of heavy defeats both at home and on their travels. The Badgers were defeated 12-3 away to Wythenshawe Amateurs Pumas as they were forced to play much of the game a player down. Despite that they continued to create chances with the goals coming from Kayden Power (2) and Joel Longworth. At Hardy Farm despite a Josh Fookes brace and a penalty from Jack ‘The Hitman’ Haworth an under strength Magpies were beaten 7-3 by Wilmslow Town Panthers. The Magpies are 7th in Division 3 whilst the Badgers are 9th in Division 4. First defeat of the season for Under-17s Playing away to Sale United Under-18s the Under-17s suffered their first loss of the season. Having initially been 2-0 at half time West rallied back through goals from Mohammed Adel Forjani, Theo Peters and Padraic Murphy. Howeve,r it was not to be as despite an excellent performance they succumbed to two goals eventually going down 4-3 to leave them second in the league after three rounds of games. Under-15s Girls still finding their feet at higher level It was a second defeat on the bounce for the Under-15s girls on Saturday losing 6-2 at home to Unicorn Athletic. The day didn’t start well with only 10 players available and the girls were 2-0 down before Alice King handed the 15s a lifeline. However a lack of goalkeeper exposed them and it was 5-1 before a superb individual effort from Ruby Cole scored a late consolation with Unicorn adding a 6th with the last kick of the game.

WEST DIDSBURY

PETT 20 (P) Saturday 10th March 2018/The Brian Addison Stadium/Att:60/HT: 1-0 On a wet and miserable day in Blackpool, the two sides at the wrong end of the league knew that a win for either side would be important to pull them away from the bottom clubs. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back Trio Max Rothwell, Gary Pett and Ryan Riley who missed out on Thursday’s loss at 1874 Northwich. Defender Jordan O’Mahoney came in to partner Alex Colquhoun in the middle of defence. Max Rothwell created the opening for Gate’s first chance for the game when he floated a ball into the box. He was looking for the run of Dean Ing, but the keeper met the ball first. Gary Pett then battled well to win the ball back on his return to the side, he played in Ryan Riley, but he wingers cross could only find the side netting. Midfielder Matt Eckersley had he visitors first chance for he game when he met right back Affleck’s cross into the box but could only find Ben Fletcher’s gloves. Gate went close again after 20 minutes when Max Rothwell had an effort cleared off the line. The midfielder fired a snapshot towards goal but defender Bayunu was in the right place to clear off the line. Gate opened the scoring after 23 minutes from the spot. Ryan Riley crowded out in the box as he looked to pass two West’ men, with the man in black ruling that Riley had been fouled. Gary Pett kept his cool to score his 14th of the season as he fired past Ashley from the spot. Gate almost had a quick fire second as Pett burst into the box, but West keeper Ashley managed to save the shot with his face. The visitors would be next to go close as first midfielder Joe Shaw saw his freekick go the wrong side of the post before top goal scorer Tom Bailey could only guide a cross the wrong side of the post moments later. Bailey was involved again in the last chance of the first half when he looked for winger Ben Steer at the back post, but Steer couldn’t connect with the ball across. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton Steer looked to make amends for his miss before the break as he sent a wicked cross into the box, but the winger could only find the post. Dean Ing almost scores a superb solo goal as Gate broke forward looking for a second. The midfielder ran from his own half but took a touch too many as he reached the box, allowing West to clear. Scott Harries then looked to test the keeper a minute later, he made space for himself on the edge of the box but curled his shot the wrong side of the post. The visitors showed their danger on the hour mark as they broke forward on the counter but the move ended when midfielder Shaw fired wide. Both Pett and Harries linked up well on 61 minutes but the latters cross could only find the keeper at the near post. The two linked up again six minutes later to go even closer for Gate. A freekick into the box found the head of Pett who in turn found Harries but the midfielder could only volley uncharacteristicly wide inside the box. The turning point in the game came on 83 minutes when West top goal scorer Tom Bailey, headed the Manchester side level. The striker who found space at the back post to head in Affleck’s cross past Fletcher. West who had been turning in the pressure for the last 25 minutes of the game would then bag themselves a late winner. The referee awarding the second penalty of the day but this time to the visitors, Gate protesting that the challenge was outside the box but all protests were waved away by the referee. Bailey stepped up to convert the spot kick and send the travelling West fans home with an important three points.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid This week's NLP programme column below, written by myself. Jamie Vardy has gone on to forge a remarkable career in football from his earlier days in the lower leagues. But he is someone who has become so widely written about everyone from Land’s End to John O’Groats has come to groan whenever they read his name and ‘Non-League’ as the subject of a news headline. It is a little bit like when you would flick through the TV channels and you find Clare Balding presenting Crufts, then she’s on the BBC fronting coverage of the athletics and on Channel 4 doing the horse racing. And, in this regard, it’s similar when you see Jamie Vardy and another Non-League angle taken by a sportswriter who is tapping what’s left of an empty keg. His story is not unique to him and is not unique to Non-League football in this country or, indeed, in other footballloving nations. But that should not diminish the feats of his career – Clare Balding is still a great presenter after all, that’s why she is getting all the TV gigs. For Vardy, seeing his career ascend to the international stage was something few footballers can dream of. But here are a few who have trod the same path as the former FC Halifax Town forward. Miroslav Klose (Germany) – FC 08 Homberg The record goalscorer in FIFA World Cups was a bit of a late-bloomer in the sport before becoming a force for Die Mannschaft. At the age of 20, Klose was splitting his time between pulling on the colours of fifth division side FC 08 Homberg and bricklaying before a move to Kaiserslautern II in 1999 saw his career come into fruition. 125 goals for Bundesliga sides Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and European giants Bayern Munich followed, as well as a five-year stint in Italy with Lazio where he averaged one goal every two-and-a-half games. For the national team, Klose became a much-needed puzzle piece that had been missing since Oliver Bierhoff’s retirement. In 137 caps for Germany Klose scored 71 times, including 16 goals at World Cups to pass Ronaldo’s record. Fernando Llorente (Spain) – CD Basconia Granted, Basque country club Basconia act as a feeder club to Athletic Bilbao but they are a club established in their own right and with their own history.

Llorente was a teenager when he turned out for the third-tier side reaching double-figures in the 2003-04 season. Eight years with Bilbao followed and so did international honours as Llorente provided the grunt to back up the skill and finesse of David Villa and Fernando Torres in Spain’s World Cup and European Championship double of 2010 and 2012.

AROUND THE LEAGUE Three big FA Cup ties and a barrowload of goals across all three divisions offered plenty of entertainment and drama at the weekend. There was disappointment for our remaining three teams in the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round, with all three going out of the competition. Ashton Athletic lost 5-0 to York City, City of Liverpool lost 4-0 to Chester and Dunston UTS beat Irlam 2-1. Post match reaction from all three games can be found in the news item below. In the Premier Division, Silsden moved back to the top of the table, thanks to Kyle Hancock's 89th minute winner clinching a 3-2 win at Winsford United. Congleton Town are in third place, the Bears coming from behind with goals from Dan Cope and Dean Warburton in the last 20 minutes earning a 2-1 win at Charnock Richard. Barnoldswick Town's 5-1 win over Runcorn Town at the Silentnight Stadium moved them to within one place and five points of their visitors, and Padiham are level on points with Barlick following their 4-0 home win over Litherland REMYCA, in which Michael Fowler scored twice for the Storks. Northwich Victoria's good run of form was ended by a 1-0 defeat at Whitchurch Alport, the decisive goal coming from Nick Porter in the 17th minute Squires Gate's 2-1 defeat at Hanley Town keeps them in eight place, one place above Bootle who won 5-1 at home to Abbey Hey, Carl Peers scoring twice for the Bucks. Taylor Kennerley scored both goals for 1874 Northwich in the 2-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton. The First Division North is now headed by Carlisle City, who moved two points clear at the top with two first half goals from David Renyard setting them on their way to a 4-2 home win over Avro. A second half comeback from AFC Liverpool saw them score three times without reply to earn a 3-1 win at Shelley that moved them into fourth place, and Lower Breck are one place behind following their 3-1 win over Bacup Borough. Cleator Moor Celtic's 7-1 win defeat of AFC Darwen moved them level on points with their visitors, although it was an outcome few would have predicted at half time with Celtic just 1-0 ahead. Goals in the last 14 minutes from Justin Pickering and Theodore Kidd edged Prestwich Heys to a 3-1 home win over Steeton, and a hat trick from Liam DIggle was the highlight of St Helens Town's 9-0 win against bottom of the table Holker Old Boys. Gary Burnett scored twice in Atherton LR's 4-2 win at Garstang, Bradley Smart also bagged a double in Ashton Town's 4-1 win at Daisy Hill and a last minute equaliser from Jake Lloyd salvaged a 2-2 draw for Nelson at home to Chadderton. In the First Division South Rylands top the table after an impressive 5-2 win at Cheadle Heath Nomads. Not for the first time this season, joint player-manager Stuart Wellstead was instrumental in his side's win, scoring his second hat trick of the season. Wythenshawe Amateurs are now in second place after going down 3-2 at New Mills on Friday night after being two up with an hour played, and Vauxhall Motors moved into third place thanks to a 4-3 win in a thriller against St Martins. Daniel Cross struck an 82nd minute winner for the Motormen, who were 3-1 down at the break. Abbey Hulton United are fifth after Lee Cropper's 88th minute winner earned them a 2-1 win at Sandbach United, and Cheadle Town are one point and one place behind with Ruben Abreu's goal clinching a 1-0 win at Ellesmere Rangers. Wythenshawe Town wrote their name in league history with their 11-3 win at Eccleshall being the first time that the score has ever been recorded. Seven different Town players got on the score sheet and Daniel Hudson bagged a hat trick. FC Oswestry Town's David Howarth also bagged a hat trick in his side's 5-2 win at Barnton, and a 90th minute winner from Luke Askey clinched a 3-2 win for Stone Old Alleynians at Maine Road. Elsewhere, Cammell Laird 1907 won 2-0 at Stone Dominoes and an 85th minute Adam Etches penalty secured a 2-2 draw for Stockport Town at home to Alsager Town.
