Saturday 17th February 2018// Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance:230 Squires Gate picked up what was described as his 'best result at the club' since rejoining by manager Andy Clarkson who oversaw a second half comeback in his sides first game since the end of January. Clarkson made several changes to his side who lost in their last outing at Padiham. A familiar face in Seydou Bamba returned to the starting 11 after rejoining the club whilst Alex Colquhoun started his first game of the calendar year. Joey Mullen returned to the side whilst Ryan Riley started up top with top goal scorer Gary Pett featuring and scoring for Bamber Bridge int Evo Stik. New signing Isaac Sinclair, son of former Blackpool and England winger Trevor Sinclair, was named on the bench and would have a big part to play in the second half. The visitors came into this game the form team in the league winning five or their last six games. That showed after just seven minutes when they opened the scoring. The impressive Jack Hazlehurst reacted quickest after Ben Fletcher did well to save the original shot, tapping in to give Liverpool the lead. Gate could have leveled the game after thirteen minutes with a great opportunity. Ryan Riley looked to make space in the box but at the key moment scuffed his shot straight into the keepers arms.

A clearly disappointed management team made two changes at half time to shake up the midfield after not being happy with what they'd seen. Dan Gary replaced Joey Mullen and Issac Sinclair replaced Jake Higham to make his debut. The changes would make a difference as Gate would grab a goal back fourteen minutes into the second half. Ryan Riley did well to recover after going down under a challenge from the keeper, he jumped back up before squaring the ball to Scott Harries who fired past Langley in goal. The momentum was all with Gate who looked the better side in the second half, the visitors perhaps thinking the game was won at half time would be punished in the sixty-seventh minute again by Gate. The ball fell loose in the box from the freekick and with the visitors unable to clear, Dean ing was in the right place at the right time to tap in past Langley. The previously mentioned momentum was now clear to see as Gate looked to win the game. That goal would come with eighteen minutes of the game left and what a goal it was! The ball fell to Max Rothwell and from 30 yards out he took aim first time and watched the ball sail into the top corner to give Gate the lead for the first time in the game. Debutante Isaac Sinclair almost grabbed himself a goal minutes Five minutes later and Riley had another great chance. Scott Harries and after Gate took the lead when the ball fell to him from Ryan Riley but his Jake Higham did well to win the ball back before Riley couldn't Scott Harries first time shot was blocked by the visitors and cleared. Gate would go on cross at the near post. Liverpool would punish Gate's two great missed to see out the game as the visitors pilled on the pressure late on for an chances when they extended their lead. One of Liverpool's form men going impressive win and impressive second half performance into this game, Dean Shacklock who had scored three in his last four games, would curl in a superb individual effort to beat Ben Fletcher from outside the box.

Saturday 24th February 22018 // Richborough Estates // Attendance:108 The homeside had the first chance of the game and should have done better on 11 minutes. Liam Moran found the ball at his feet but he dragged his shot wide. Congleton again came forward minutes later but this time Emini Adegbenro couldn’t finish off the move. Gate themselves had chances down the other end when Max Rothwell and Scott Harries linked up well. First Rothwell found Harries from a short freekick but Harries turn and shot was blocked by Peters for Congleton. They next linked up five minutes later when keeper Daniel Eccles pulled out a superb save to deny Rothwell. Scott Harries found Max and from the edge of the box the midfielder struck a low shot but the keeper did well to push the ball wide at the last minute. Emini Adegbenro had another good chance for the homeside. From Gate's freekick The Bears countered but Adegbenro couldn't find a way past Ben Fletcher. In a similar situation, Ryan Riley was denied down the other end when Eccles just managed to tip the ball round the other side of the post when one on one.

Dean Ing had another chance two minutes later when he met Max Rothwell's freekick. He headed back across goal but could only find the wrong side of the post. The homeside went close first from Liam Moran who headed wide from a freekick before defender Thomas Morris fired a freekick over the bar not troubling Ben Fletcher. Gary Pett had a great chance with 20 minutes to go when he challenged the keeper for the ball from Jake Higham's cross. Higham sent the ball into the six yard box but the keeper did well to punch the ball clear from Pett's challenge, with nobody in Blue reacting quickest to the lose ball. Eccles in goal for Congleton again did brilliantly to deny Gate in the 72nd minute. Gate captain Scott Harries jinked past three men before driving the ball low towards the bottom corner but Eccles again did well to push the ball wide. Congleton again went through one on one in the 76th minute but sub John Main couldn't keep his composure. He ran into the box but put the ball the wrong side of the box. Two Gate subs would combine for what would turn out to Half Time - Congleton Town 0-0 Squires Gate be the winning goal in the 80th minute. Scott Harries sent a Gate almost broke the deadlock after the half time break with some freekick into the back post where Jordan O'Mahoney was to head clever play. The freekick was taken quickly to find Dean Ing but he back into the path of Ryan Charnley who struck the ball low into couldn't find a way past Eccles in goal. the bottom corner through a crowded box to win the game for Gate.

Thursday 8th March 2018 // St Luke’s Barton Stadium // Attendance:173 Gate did well to nullify the homesides threat who started brightly in Scott McGowan with his second of the game after he met a cross the game. Winger Ryan Jackson burst forward but defender Dan from the left hand side to fire past Fletcher. The turning point in Gray did well to keep up with him and eventually clear the ball. the game came six minutes later when Gate got a goal back. THE BOSS

Steve Settle Steve has been at as a player manager now for 3 years and lead them to one of there highest league position, last year and would be hoping to do more as the same. Steve and his west side would want to improve on they 17th place finished so far this season however with so many game being off over this season they be hoping with what little time they have left they can shoot up a the tight league. Steve will know are no push over and they know its going be hard to get a lot out of todays game but I'm sure he up for the fight and be up for anything that gate throw at them.

BREIF HISTORY West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. in 1908, over 100 years ago, by Mr. R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in Chorlton in 1996, and made plans to restore the ground and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. New changing rooms and clubhouse facilities were completed aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds and in time to start the 1997-98 season at this new home. A further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of the club’s centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, also resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills and the Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League. Plans were made to lease adjacent land long term for junior football to deliver the club Vision to be a FA Charter Standard Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Floodlights were erected in July 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-12 as a Step 7 club. Election to the Step 6 and the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season finishing in 3rd position to secure promotion to Step 5, guaranteeing a first ever FA Cup place and winning the Div1 Trophy. 2013-14 saw a strong recovery from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish in the Premier Division. Two new stands were then installed to improve spectator facilities and the new grass pitches were laid out on adjoining land as part of the long term development plan. Further historic milestones in 2013-14 were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup quickly followed by a 2-1 first FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. The following season saw the club experience something of an erratic start in the League, as well as losing to Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik League [North] in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk over by the FA in the previous round against NWCFL new club, Cammell Laird 1907. Rossington were FA Vase opponents for the second successive year and again defeated 2-1, this time at home, before West lost 1-2 to eventual finalists Glossop North End. Some good mid season results garnered enough points to finish 16 th in the table, well clear of trouble, with a final home game 2-0 victory over Runcorn Linnets signing off manager Andy Nelson’s six meteoric season’s in style. 2015-16 proved to be a record breaking season in a number of ways for West. After a slightly erratic start to the season under new manager Steve Settle, a series of good results from September onwards saw the club rise up the table eventually finishing in a record 5th place. The major highlight of the season had to be the record breaking 15-1 FA Vase win over Dinnington Town, this being the highest ever win both in the Vase as a competition and by any NWCFL club throughout history. Progression was also made off the field with new facilities at Hardy Farm opened by local MP Jeff Smith. Plans were also made to expand the clubhouse and spectator facilities at Brookburn Road. The season was to have a sad end with the death of club secretary Rob Turley, a man who had been involved with West Didsbury & Chorlton for over 40 years. But with a strong volunteer base and progress being made on and off the field, the club is in safe hands with a bright future ahead. 2016/17 saw the club finihsed in 6th place but finished with both a record points total and number of goals scored notching 106 league goals. The club also saw a record average attendance as almost 5,000 people attended matches at Brookburn Road with a club record 674 in attendance for the South Manchester Derby against Maine Road. In cup competitions West entered the Manchester Premier Cup defeating Radcliffe Borough and Glossop North End en-route to facing FC United of Manchester in the Semi Final’s which saw more than 200 West supporters travel to Broadhurst Park before West bowed out to the eventual winners.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

SAMUEL WILSION

This week we interviewed West Fan Samuel Wilson, We found out what hid expectations was after last year 6th place finished, what has been his most memorable moment and game within his time at West. We also found out who would be in a 5 a side team and why. What are your expectations for the the new season after your 6th place finished last season?

What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching West Didsbury?

This season has been turbulent to say the least. We started brilliantly and through August and September a top three finish didn't seem an impossibility. But a cup win away at Maine Road at the start of November marked the beginning of a turgid Winter which featured a number a heavy defeats and a drastic slide down the table. I'm confident we have enough to avoid the drop and hopefully next season we'll be back stronger and more consistent.

This season, when we beat Winsford 3-2 in our first home game for months of the Winter of Discontent. The game was a thriller with a big attendance and the club laid on a free drink for the fans afterwards. It proved what a special club West is and we all felt better times were to come.

challenge on the title this year?

will continue to do so next year.

For me, consistency is key. I know it is hard at this level with injuries and players having work and family commitments but many times this season we've seen a vastly different starting XI from the week before and the team just isn't getting the chance to gel. I'd like to see a similar XI starting games each week and really getting the chance to understand each other's football.

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

Which players will be key for you this season?

Aaron Ashley in goal, Steer and Bailey going forward. Jack Sergeant what do you think you need to improve on to make a good has made a huge mark on our defence and midfield and I hope he

What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Like many West fans, Maine Road is usually my highlight. With both grounds in Chorlton, there's always a healthy dose of local rivalry and the atmosphere is cracking.

Any three half-decent defenders who can stay fit for more than ten minutes.

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? I have not been before.

If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 west players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why?

From West I'll have Aaron Ashley to boss the 'keeping and Carlos to dribble past everybody. BPL legends give me Scholes to keep things calm in midfield, Teddy Sheringham to grab the goals and John Arne Runcorn Town's Pavilions with the imposing factory backdrop was Riise to defend and score from range. the one I most wanted to go to. Unfortunately we played there Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would midweek so I will have to wait!

What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season?

Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to gate?

be your ideal scenario there?

I tagged on to the York City crowd for the conference play-off final they lost to Oxford. Ideally I'd like to see my own Sheffield WednesIn Tom Bailey and Ben Steer we have one of the joint top goalscor- day lift a trophy there - or maybe even West! ers in the division and a playmaker of immense quality. Ben's Prediction for today's game? throw-ins have been the undoing of many a defence this season. I'm going to be optimistic and hope West can get the luck for once

Which player of west is underrated ? I've always said that Carlos Mendes Gomes should get more game time. He's a frustrating, tricky player but has great potential.

and come away with points. 2-4.

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORTLON BAILEY 29, WHYMENT 66, SHAW 90

Wednesday 7th March 2018/WEC Anchor Group Ground/Attendance: 168 West came home from Lancashire perhaps deserving three points, while still being fortuitous to have nicked one at the death in what turned out to be a thrilling 3 – 3 draw against an AFC Darwen side who certainly aren’t letting their relegation battle go without a struggle. West were bolstered by the return of Matt Eckersley in defence – his first appearance since rejoining the club from Welsh side Cefn Druids – and former Darwen striker Chappy Massamba on the bench. Both players were to have their own impacts on the game. In the opening 10 minutes, West looked the most likely to break the deadlock: Steer repeatedly found space down the right, but stout defending from the home side meant that there was rarely room to get a shot away. Even with the Darwen keeper suffering a few early hiccups – two crosses were spilled, with noone to capitalise – the visitors struggled to take advantage of their early spell of dominance. With the pitch quickly coming up, it took a moment of fortune for the deadlock to be broken: Tom Bailey, finding space 25 yards from goal, had a strike at goal. Taking a clip en route, the goalkeeper was unable to adjust to the deflection in time, leaving the ball to roll in and for West to take the lead around the half hour mark. This was Bailey’s 30th goal of the season: a richly deserved haul for one of the most talented players of our recent history. From there, Darwen came into the game. Finding himself one on one with West goalkeeper Hodges – who had an impressive game all round – a Darwen attack chose to try round the keeper, going down under a challenge. A big shout for a penalty followed, but the referee agreed that Hodges had taken the ball. From the resulting corner, West weren’t to be so lucky twice. A ball whipped into a crowded area saw it hit a West hand: Ryan Steele dispatched the spot kick with the minimum of fuss. A few moments later, AFC Darwen were to be ahead. A quickly won free kick around the halfway line was lumped into the box, with the ball getting lost under the lights for West defenders and bouncing in the six yard box, before taking a nick and going past the hugely unfortunate Hodges. It would later officially be credited as an own goal, but there can be little blame accredited to whoever had the final touch. The second half started out choppy for both teams, until a series of subs changed the complexion of the game: Chappy Massamba and Georgi Whyment were brought into the fray for Malachi Slaven and Omar McKenzie respectively. Chappy immediately made an impact, with his hard running forcing a series of West chance – but it was Whyment would would make the crucial difference. Following good interplay down the right between Bailey and Massamba, a whipped ball into the box found an unmarked Whyment at the back post, who volleyed home with no little skill to level the game at 2-2. 01 JAMES HODGES West were unable to build upon this parity, however. Hodges, 01 JAMES WHITTINGHAM who had earlier kept West in the game with a series of saves 02 STEVEN AFFLECK 02 KIERAN WOOD while Darwen had the upper hand, was to suffer the same 03 JOSHUA TINKER 03 CALLUM HOCTOR fate as his opposite number. A Kiel Lonsdale effort from dis04 MATTHEW ECKERSLEY tance with 15 minutes to go was to take a wicked deflection 04 TIMOTHY DRUGAN and take it completely out of the reach of the young keeper, 05 LANRE OLAPADE 05 MARTIN PARKER putting the home side ahead and within reach of their fourth 06 MALACHI SLAVEN 06 KIEL LONSDALE victory of the season. There were chances to level things up 07 BENJAMIN STEER before the final moment – notably, a free header that could 07 JAMIE EDWARDS only be directed over – but it was left until the dying embers 08 JOHN SERGEANT 08 KARL TURNER for West to salvage a point. Winning a free kick on the edge 09 THOMAS BAILEY 09 LIAM COLE of the area, it was left up to Joe Shaw to attend to the set piece. Under no little pressure, and with little room for error, 10 JOSEPH SHAW 10 RYAN STEELE the midfielder managed to whip the ball up and over the wall 11 OMAR MCKENZIE 11 BOOBY LANGFORD and into the top corner: a fitting finale for any football match, and giving the game the result that both team’s performances deserved. 12 GEROGI WHYMENT 12 LUKE CASSISDY 14 MOHAMMED NABELL

WE’VE MET BEFORE WEST DIDSBURY SQUIRES GATE

TUESDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2017

The homeside would have their first chance of the game after five minutes but they headed wide from the flicked on throw in. Dawson would make up for his early miss by putting Gate ahead after 11 minutes. He reacted quickly to latch onto a weak back pass to the keeper. He took the ball away from him and tapped into an empty net. After the goal came abit of a stalemate between the two teams with both cancelling each other out and neither really threatening. West did well to defend several Gate shots on 30 minutes with several player throwing their bodies at the shots. West could have equalised on 34 minutes when the striker was sent through with a long ball. He strode into the box but chose to shoot from the right angle rather than cut the ball back into the box. Gate would grab a second goal two minutes before half time. Great pressing from Gate's attack around West's penalty box leading to a mistake. First Dawson then Tanser pressed but it was Jamie Gibson who nicked the ball back and fired past the keeper. The homeside would grab a goal back on 56 minutes. A long throw into the box found West's number 5 who headed past Fletcher. As quickly as they'd scored one, they'd scored another 3 minutes later. A low ball into the box found West's striker who fired low past Fletcher. Gate would grab the winning goal on 64 minutes. A lovely move involve all three of the front three. Ryan Tanser sent a lovely ball over to find Brett Dawson, he controlled the ball and passed to Ric Seear who cooley finished past the keeper. Gate did well late on, to defend a barrage of pressure from the homeside who pressed for an equaliser.

SATURDAY 18TH MARCH 2017

Gate were down to the bare bones in this game with seven first team players either injured or unavailable. In heavy conditions the football on show was still to a high standard with both teams still trying to play football on what was a worsening pitch. West had the chance to open the scoring after 11 minutes with the first chance for either side. A deep cross was played into the back post where Joe Shaw met the ball but poked it across goal. Gate were then saved when keeper Andy Speight did well to save, the follow up corner came to nothing. Gate's best chance of the opening exchanges came when Charlie Waters took aim from the edge of the box. The winger is still looking for his first goal for Gate but fired this one well over the bar. Minutes later Gate would go close again but just missed that little bit of luck. 16 year old debutante Connor Smith did well to battle for the ball in midfield before finding Ben Seear but Seear's cross in was smothered by the keeper before Tarren Moxon could meet it. Player manager Danny Penswick had to put his body on the line a minute later, he dove in to block a shot from the edge of the box after Speight did well to punch clear. West would take the lead after 36 minutes through Nic Evangelinos. He showed a lovely touch in the box to evade keeper Andy Speight who had come to close down from his goal before tapping into the empty net.

The second half would start perfectly for Gate who took the lead after one minute. Ben Seear was the first to pounce after the ball got stuck in the mud in the six yard box, he fired into the bottom corner to level the game. Gate would then go on to impress, battling hard and seeing alot of the ball. Unfortunately the game would change in the last 15 minutes. West were able to bring on three subs whose impact changed the game.

MACTH PREVIEW BY MARK ASHMORE Gate return to Blackpool to host West Didsbury & Chorlton in a big game at the bottom of the table. Gate will be looking to get back to winning ways after Thursday night's loss against 1874 Northwich. Last time out Gate suffered a frustrating defeat to one of the leagues form teams on Thursday evening as they were beaten 3-1 away at 1874 Northwich. The homeside opened the scoring a minute before half time when Scott McGowan met a cross from the right to head past Ben Fletcher.1874 would double their lead nine minutes into the second half when McGowan again met a cross, this time from the left, to fire past Fletcher. The turning point for Gate came in the 60th minute when Scott Harries beat a 74 man before curling the ball past Greg Hall in goal to give Gate hope of a comeback. It was Gate who looked the more likely to get a second goal, creating some good chances. It was the homeside though who would seal the game in the 85th minute. A short corner found its way out to Ryan Jackson on the edge of the box where the defender volleyed in past Fletcher.

The Away Team West come into this game sixteenth in the league having won only two of their last six games. This season they've won ten of their twenty eight games, losing fifteen and drawing three games. West's last game saw them draw 3-3 away at second bottom AFC Darwen on Wednesday night. Striker Tom Bailey opened the scoring before Darwen went on to score twice before half time. Sub Georgi Whyment then grabbed a goal back to level the game before Kiel Lonsdale gave Darwen the lead. West would rescue the draw after going down to 10 men in the 90th minute when Joseph Shaw struck to make it 3-3. The form table for West looks like WWLLDD placing them 12th in the form table. The wins came against Winsford and AFC Darwen before back to back losses against Hanley Town and Runcorn Town and back to back draws against Abbey Hey and AFC Darwen.Gate will need to be wary of top marksman Tom Bailey who continued his good goal scoring form again on Wednesday night. The West front man has six goals in his last six games adding to an impressive 29 goals this season.

The Last Time We Met The two sides last met in October where West beat Gate 4-2. West took the lead after just two minutes when an impressive Ben Steer opened the scoring before doubling the home sides lead on 17 minutes with another goal. Midfielder Matty Kay got in on the goal scoring act in the second half before striker Tom Bailey rounded off the scoring for the homeside. Gate had a late flurry of goals but it all happened to little to late as first Jack Williams then an own goal reduced the scoreline. You can read the full report on that game here on our website.

Head to Head The two sides have met 10 times since 2014. The two sides actually share the winning spoils with both sides having registered five wins a piece in previous meetings. No draws have happened between the two sides, though let's not hope this is an omen for Saturday's game.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE DAWN OF TIM

1979

On 6 March 1979, United States and Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He started his career in 1997 with the North Jersey Imperials in the United States Independent Soccer Leagues, but moved to Major League Soccer in 1998 with the MetroStars. After making limited appearances in his first few seasons there, he claimed the starting job in 2001. Later that year, he became the youngest player to receive the league's Goalkeeper of the Year award. In 2003, Manchester United signed him for $4 million to take over from Fabien Barthez as the club's firstchoice keeper. But despite a strong start, winning the Community Shield with a penalty save against Arsenal, he struggled in his next two seasons, leading to his departure to Everton on loan in 2006. He shined at Everton, making his move permanent in a 2007 deal worth a reported £3 million. In January 2012, he even scored a goal, as a long clearance was pushed along by the wind into the opposing net, making him only the fourth keeper in Premier League history to do so. He remained their starting keeper until 2016, when he returned to the US to play for the Colorado Rapids. In addition to his club duties, Howard has been a regular starter for the United States since the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup and has, to date, earned 121 caps.

MAKAAY MAKES HIS MARK

2007

On 7 March 2007, Bayern Munich's Roy Makaay scored the Champions League's fastest goal when he netted against Real Madrid after only 10 seconds. The match was the second leg of the Round of 16. Real Madrid won the first leg at the Bernabéu 3-2, but Bayern's two away goals would prove to be crucial. Bayern hosted the second leg at the Allianz Arena, where a crowd of 69,500 turned out to watch Makaay's record goal. Real Madrid took the opening kick and quickly sent it back to left back Roberto Carlos, whose poor touch allowed Bayern's Hasan Salihamidžić to steal it away. He slipped behind the defensive line and centered the ball for Makaay, surging through the middle. The striker collected it and beat keeper Iker Casillas with a calm finish with just 10.12 seconds on the clock. The goal crushed the previous record of 20.07 seconds, set by Arsenal's Gilberto Silva in a 2002 match against PSV Eindhoven. The match ended 2-1 to Bayern after they got a second-half goal from Lucio (66') and Madrid got a late penalty from forward Ruud van Nistelrooy (83'). Even at 3-3 on aggregate, Bayern advanced on away goals (but lost to Milan in the quarterfinals).

A PAIR OF CLINTS On 9 March 2005, Clint Dempsey made his first start for the United States in a 3-0 win over Colombia. The striker/midfielder had gotten his first cap in November 2004, but had yet to crack the starting line-up until the friendly against Colombia, played on his 22nd birthday. He was one of six players making their starting debut, including goalkeeper Jon Busch and defenders Richie Kotschau and Chad Marshall. Those three, along with substitute Nat Borchers, were playing with the national team for the first time. Dempsey was also one of two Clints on the pitch, joining The US went up 1-0 with a 25th-minute goal from Dempsey's New England Revolution teammate, Pat Noonan, with an assist from another Revolution player, Steve Ralston. Ralston also assisted on the second goal, scored by Marshall in the 33rd minute. Clint Mathis completed the win with a third goal in the 66th minute. While Dempsey did not score that day, he has since gone on to net a total of 57 goals in 141 appearances, making him the team's all-time top scorer.

LAST TIME OUT?

RUNCORN TOWN 1 SQUIRES GATE 1 It was Town that had the first chance of the game when former Gate striker Isaac Kusaloka took aim from distance but fired straight into Griffiths arms. Just a minute later though it was Gate who had a chance of their own. Brett Dawson picking the ball up deep played a lovely ball into the path of both Ben Seear and Jake Higham but neither could finish. Leading goal scorer Craig Cairns then had a great chance after striker partner Kusaloka pulled the ball back to him at the edge of the box, but he fired well over the bar. Again Gate replied with a good chance of their own but again couldn't capitalise. Bamba passing the ball into the feet of Ben Seear, Seear flicked the ball up then fired towards goal but the shot went straight into the keepers arms. Gate then had probably their best chance of the first half on 30 minutes. Thornber flicking the ball into Richards, he headed onto Brett Dawson but the strikers thunderous strike was fired wide. The turning point would come on 42 minutes when the homeside were awarded a penalty. Manager Danny Penswick judged to have bought down striker Craig Cairns in the box though the decision looked soft. Cairns stepped up to convert the penalty and give Runcorn the half time lead. The second half saw Gate dominate most of the half after a good first 10 minutes for the home side. Gate could have equalised on 65 minutes, Town clearing the ball off the line from a Gate corner. Before that striker Brett Dawson was unlucky to see his effort saved. Gate then had another chance this time from a freekick, but that was headed wide at the back post. Gate then forced Town’s keeper into a great save to keep them in the game. Dave Rossall sent a lovely ball forward to find Seydou Bamba, but Bamba’s shot is pushed clear by the keeper. Bamba had a second chance from Mike Hall’s cross back into the box but he just couldn’t stretch far enough to meet the ball. All Gate’s hard work would be rewarded with six minutes left to play. Like at title contenders Atherton Colls earlier in the season Gate would work their socks off and get a deserved equaliser. Jake Higham firing a thunderous strike which cannoned off the post into the path of Brett Dawson to tap in.

GATE NEWS Squires Gate are delighted to announce the signing of former Blackpool, QPR, West Ham and England International Trevor Sinclair. The former England International comes out of retirement three years after making an appearance for Lancaster City whilst he was Assistant Manager. Known affectionately by Blackpool fans as ‘Tricky Trev’ for his dangerous play down the wings and tricky feet, Trev started his footballing career at Blackpool in 1989. He made 112 appearances after becoming the youngest ever player to make his debut for the club, since broken by Matty Kay, scoring 15 goals. His form under the successful legendary Blackpool manager Billy Ayre earned him a move to Premier League club QPR for a record £600,000, breaking Blackpool’s record transfer sale. Trev made 167 appearances for the London club scoring 16 goals, including ‘that’ bicycle kick that won the 1997 Match of the Day goal of the season. His name was constantly liked with leading clubs in the Premier League including Manchester United, Leeds united and Newcastle United. In 1993 he moved back into the Premier League scoring 7 goals in the last 14 games of the season to help the Hammers finish 8th in the Premier League. It was whilst at West Ham that he earned his international honours. He was called up to the England squad and went on to earn 12 caps for England, four of which came in the 2002 world cup. For the Hammers he made 177 appearances, scoring 37 goals. Forces to cut costs at the end of the season when they suffered relegation, Sinclair was sold to Manchester City going on to make 82 appearances, scoring five goals. He joined Cardiff City in 2007 after being released by City, but suffered a nasty injury which ruled him out until mid-February from early on in the season. His last appearances for the club was at Wembley as an 86th minute sub against Portsmouth in the 2008 FA Cup Final. Many eagle eyed fans will have noticed that Trevor’s son, Isaac, made his debut for Gate on Saturday as a second half sub. The chance for Trevor to line up alongside his son was too good to turn down, and we look forward to seeing both line up for Gate in

Squires Gate are delighted to be hosting the SportsReach finals for the second year running. Both finals are run by SportsReach who are a church organisation who spread the word of Christ through sport. SportsReach contacted us earlier in the month with an enquiry to play the two finals at our ground and we were more than happy to oblige. The charity is based in Carnforth and also has Netball leagues. The SportsReach League is a vital part of the ministry. The 2017/18 season sees eight teams competing for the league title and in two cup competitions. On Saturday afternoons throughout the autumn and winter seasons, competitive matches are played in the SportsReach league and before or after every game a player or manager shares their testimony or a Gospel message with both teams.

The first game is Lancaster United v Great Eccleston Free Methodist FC on Tuesday 13th March, kick off 7:45pm. They're playing for the League Trophy Final.

The second game on Thursday 15th March is Wray FC v St. Johns Accrington FC again a 7:45pm kick off. This game is for the Champions Cup.
