The Gaffer DANNY PENSWICK “AFTER A TOUGH FEW RESULTS IM HOPING THE CHANGE IN ATMOSPHERE TONIGHT CAN GIVE US A CHANGE IN FORTUNES Tonight we welcome Widnes to SGFC and also our first Friday night game. After a tough few results I'm hoping the change in atmosphere tonight can give us a change in fortunes. Widnes have had a mixed start to the season so far but will be hoping to really kick start their season against us. They came up as Champions from the league below and will prove to be another tough test for us. Whilst results haven't been acceptable I've seen enough in the performances to know that the first points of the season are just around the corner. Nick Greenall has been really impressive in since returning from injury and I'm looking forward to seeing how the returning Mike Hall and Jack Williams will improve us. Performances don't always mean points and whilst everyone round the club will be keen to take the positives over recent weeks I know it's results that matter. 3 points today would be just the tonic. Up the Gate

GATE WINLESS RUN CONTINUES AS THEY CRASHED OUT OF THE VASE Both teams came into the game with not the best start to the season, Gate without a win and The Bears with one win and two draws. It would be the visitors who would make the early break through making it look too easy. Striker Declan Fletcher was allowed too much time and space to stride forward and fire into the top corner past Fletcher. Had it not been for some vital saves from Ben Fletcher, the scoreline could have been higher in the first half. He kept the visitors out on 12 minutes before doing so again on 20 minutes. Gate's best chance of the first half wouldn't come until the 26th minute. A freekick into the box found Gal Pett, but his header hit the post and was collected by the keeper. The visitors would double their lead on 35 minutes when Declan Fletcher would grab his second of the game. He turned quickly in the box after picking the ball up from a scramble to fire past Ben Fletcher. Just before half time the away side would further extend their lead. Full back Thomas Morris firing in a bullet header to end what was a near perfect first half for Congleton.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 0-3 Congleton Town Gate would make the ideal start to the second half getting themselves back in the game with a superb goal from Dean Ing. Gal Pett found the midfielder in the box and he met it with a sweet volley in off the post. The fightback wouldn't last long for Gate though, prolific striker Jason Carey making it look easy again. He waltzed through Gate's backline before easily finishing past Fletcher. The crazy start to the second half would continue when Gate would score another screamer. This time Nick Greenall fired in from the edge of the box right into the top corner. gate made the change to bring Tarren Moxon into the game and he made a great difference to their front line. He jinked into the box on 60 minutes but his shot was easy for the keeper to save. In what was becoming a back and forward second half, the visitors scoring their fifth goal of the game after Adegbenro tapped in at the far post. Gate had a golden chance on 75 minutes after Moxon's shot forced a corner. That corner came to nothing for Gate who could have scored soon after. Congleton trying to play out from the back, Gate won the ball back, but Mark Buchan fired wide. The visitors would put the game out of sight in the 78th minute when experienced striker Steve Foster, on as a sub, ran onto a ball over the top to fire in. Gate could and probably should have had a goal back in the 82nd minute. Gal Pett's thunderous strike finding the post from outside the box.

THE BOSS JOEY DUNN Joey was appointed Widnes manager in September 2016. Joey had a successful playing career and his first venture into management came in 2008 at Burscough.

Joey was then appointed manager of Warrington Town later that year, leading Town to two consecutive 9th placed finishes in the Evo-Stik Division One North in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Joey left in March 2012 and went on to manage Runcorn Linnets having played for the now-defunct Runcorn FC. Dunn lead Linnets to three consecutive 2nd placed finishes in the NWCFL Premier

BREIF HISTORY Widnes FC were founded as recently as 2003 and focussed initially on junior football under the guise of The Dragons AFC, later to be known as Widnes Dragons. A huge early achievement was the awarding of FA Charter Standard status less than 12 months after being formed. In March 2012 Widnes Dragons started a consultation process with Widnes Vikings RLFC to become part of the Vikings Sports brand, a partnership that would enhance the clubs community status. An Open Age side was established with the short-term goal of being granted entry into the North West Counties Football League. Steve Hill was appointed First Team manager in September 2012, and steered the Club to a 4th placed finish in its inaugural and so far only season in the West Cheshire League Third Division. During this season, the Club also submitted its application to join the North West Counties Football League for the 2013/14 season. Prior to the season, Widnes’ application was successful and the Club began life in the North West Counties Football League Third Division with a 3-1 home defeat to Cheadle Town before winning their first game in the NWCFL with an emphatic 5-1 away win over Northwich Flixton Villa. Hill eventually guided his side to a 14th placed finish in their inaugural season in the First Division with 36 points from 36 games. The 2014/15 season saw the Club make significant progress in cup competitions. Widnes reached the last 16 of the Men United Cup before falling to eventual League Champions Glossop North End, and reached the quarter-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup, beating Prescot Cables before being knocked out in the last eight by eventual winners Skelmersdale United. The season also oversaw the Club’s first foray in the FA Vase. Widnes were knocked out in the Second Qualifying Round following a 2-0 defeat at AFC Emley. Following the season’s conclusion, winger Ben Tollitt became the first former Widnes player to play for a Football League club as he signed a one-year deal with 2008 FA Cup winners Portsmouth, after impressing on trial. Tollitt later moved to Tranmere Rovers in December 2016 after a successful loan spell. The following season saw the Club again reach the quarter-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup, coming up against an Everton XI managed by David Unsworth. The young Toffees excelled in the game and beat Widnes 8-0 despite an admirable performance from the home side. After a 13th placed finish, Chairman David Day and Manager Steve Hill stepped down from their roles, allowing a new Board of Directors and management team to be appointed to bring some much needed new stimulus to the club. David Day remained on the newly established Board of Directors, headed by incoming Chairman Ian Ross that bring the necessary expertise and drive to enable the Club to progress over the coming seasons. Danny Meadowcroft and Brian Pritchard where appointed as joint managers heading into the 2016/17 season but later left the Club by mutual consent following an indifferent start to the season in September. Danny Salt was appointed interim manager, leading the side to a win and a draw in his two games in charge. Former Burscough, Warrington Town and Runcorn Linnets manager Joey Dunn was appointed as new First Team Manager later that month. During the season, Kevin Towey became the Club's new record goalscorer following a brace at Skelmersdale United in November. the season ended on a highly successful note as Widnes were crowned Hallmark Security League First Division Champions with a game to spare following a 5-1 win away at AFC Blackpool, securing promotion to the Premier Division in the process. Widnes ended the season with a remarkable 14-match unbeaten league run, lifting Dunn’s side to the title. Prior to the 2017/18 season, the Club established a junior setup consisting of Under 7s and Under 9s sides. The Club were then awarded FA Charter Standard Status.

LAST TIME OUT

WIDNES 1 Glasshoughton Welfare 2 Saturday 9th September 2017/Fa Vase Qualifying Round /Attendance: 41 Widnes exited the FA Vase at the first qualifying round stage after losing 2-1 at home to Northern Counties East League First Division side Glasshoughton Welfare on Saturday. Andrew Norbury headed Glasshoughton ahead inside 11 minutes with Widnes equalising midway through the second half as Andy Gillespie netted his first goal for the club. With extra-time looming, Andrew McManus settled the contest in controversial circumstances on a desperately disappointing afternoon for Widnes, who were unable to build upon their 2-1 win over Congleton Town last time out. Manager Joey Dunn named an unchanged side from the victory over Congleton, and it was Widnes who fashioned the tie’s first opportunity. Luke Edwards latched on to a Billy Webb flick-on and drove forward only for his cross-turned-shot to sail over the crossbar and nestle on the roof of the net. Despite Widnes’ early dominance over possession, it was Glasshoughton who took an early lead. Alex Davies conceded a cheap free-kick just outside the area that was cleverly floated into the area by Conor Glavin with Andrew Norbury peeling away from his marker to glance an unchallenged header into the far corner. Chances were few and far between as Widnes struggled to break down a well-disciplined and rigidly organised Glasshoughton defence who had bodies behind the ball that began to frustrate the patient hosts. Chris Lomax fired a shot harmlessly over for Widnes whilst ‘keeper Richie Mottram – who was rarely troubled following the opener – had to react quickly to produce a good stop to deny Tom Carr’s near-post flick-on. Widnes boss Dunn was forced into a chance late in the first half, with Kev Towey replacing Webb who limped off with a hamstring injury after over-exerting himself on the receiving end of a strong McManus challenge. Halftime: Widnes 0-1 Glasshoughton Welfare Widnes started the second half well and should have equalised almost immediately after the restart. The vibrant Jack Graham got forward from right-back and produced a good cross into the area that was met by Chris Lomax, who couldn’t quite direct his header on target as he looked to re-produce his match-winning heroics from the victory over Congleton. Graham was again involved as Widnes again went close as Graham produced a deep-cross towards the back-post only for Alex Davies to head narrowly wide from an acute angle. Widnes were in the ascendency and were subsequently rewarded as Dunn’s side found an equaliser. Davies found himself in space on the right-flank to float a cross towards the near-post that was met by Andy Gillespie who managed to direct his header beyond the outstretched Arron Murphy to net his first goal for the club following his arrival from St Helens Town.

Sean Myler was introduced from the bench as Dunn looked for alternatives going forward and the change almost paid instant dividends as the former Marine man got in behind the Glasshoughton defence and looked to pick out Towey who couldn’t quite grab an elusive touch to poke the ball home. Lomax could only fire wide with his follow-up. Widnes pushed for a late winner but appeared to run out of ideas against Glasshoughton’s well-marshalled defence. Gillespie had a half-hearted appeal for a penalty turned down before central defender Mike Burke drove a shot into gloves of Murphy. With extra-time looming, it was Glasshoughton who managed to find a late winner against the run of play, albeit in controversial circumstances.

Widnes protested both decisions but to no avail as Glasshoughton booked themselves a trip to AFC Darwen in the second qualifying round.

LAST TIME OUT? AFC DARWEN 4 SQUIRES GATE 1 A win would over their fellow strugglers would have secured Gate’s premier division status but they now stand one place above the drop zone and could still be caught by third-bottom New Mills, who are seven points behind with three to play. All the goals came in the second-half, the damage done when Gate conceded three in 10 minutes. Manager Danny Penswick made four changes to the side narrowly beaten by Ashton Athletic on Sunday as defender Paul Alexander started up front, with Paul Carroll, Mark Thornber and Ben Seear all coming into the side. Neither team could convert their chances in a tight first half, Andrew Richards blocking a Darwen shot before Ben Seear fired wide from outside the box at the other end. The best chance of the half fell to the hosts, when Gate switched off at a throw and were lucky to see a header flash wide. Gate had a chance of their own before the break but Corey Moorhead’s shot at the back-post was blocked for a corner. The major turning point arrived 10 minutes into the second half, when Tarren Moxon’s header for Gate was cleared off the line and Darwen raced to the other end to break the deadlock. A break down the right and a low cross was finished by Nick Hepple. The second followed five minutes later, when Conor Gaul was allowed too much space to cross from the bye-line for Bobby Langford to tap in at the near post. And it was 3-0 on 65 minutes, when Hepple fired home his second from outside the box. Gate pulled one back on 72 minutes, when substitute Brett Dawson cleverly beat the keeper one-onone. But two minutes later, Hepple sealed his hat-trick and virtually secured Darwen’s safety. Gate, however, remain anxious to win one of their remaining two games. They face third-placed Runcorn Linnets in Saturday’s final home game of the season.

NWCFL NEWS Two league games, and a fistful of Buildbase FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round ties, spread over three days on a rain affected weekend, delivered mixed results for our clubs at the weekend. The action kicked off in the Buildbase FA Vase on Friday night with a cracking game at Townfield, which ended in Stockport Town eventually winning 4-3 in a thriller against Northwich Victoria. Town were actually leading 4-1 with less than ten minutes to go, but two late goals from Vics set up an exciting finish. The focus then turned to Saturday, with ten of our clubs progressing and ten falling at the first hurdle in the games that survived the wet weather. Highest scorers of the day were Charnock Richard who will fondly remember their trip across the Pennines to Selby Town, after winning 7-1, Carl Grimshaw and Mark Adams both scoring twice. There were plenty of goals in the three all-Hallmark Security League ties that survived the wet weather. Last season's League Player of the Year Declan Fletcher scored twice in Congleton Town's 6 -2 win at Squires Gate, and across the road at AFC Blackpool Tom Bailey hit a hat trick in West Didsbury & Chorlton's 5-1 win.A ding-dong encounter at Wood Park saw Alsager Town eventually triumph 3-2 over New Mills, with the second of Oliver Jepson's goals ten minutes from time proving to be decisive. Dan Cope scored twice for Hanley Town in their 5-1 home win over Lichfield City, as did Kyle Hancock in Silsden's 3-2 win at Chester-le-Street Town. Carlisle City also emerged victorious from a trip to the North East with a 3-1 win at Heaton Stannington and an extra time winner from Shaun Harris secured Litherland REMYCA a 1-0 win Ashton Town at the LSP. Two candidates for games of the day produced a total of 17 goals between them, and in both cases both our clubs progressed. There appeared for a while to be shock on the cards on the Wirral, but 1874 Northwich eventually got the better of their West Cheshire League opponents Vauxhall Motors, winning 5 -4 at the end of extra time. All was going to plan when Adam Whitlock and Jake Parker gave 1874 a two goal lead within 19 minutes, but by the hour mark the Greens were 4-2 down. Two late goals from Kazim Waite-Jackson levelled the tie at 4-4 to deliver another 30 minutes of action and Jack Pritchard struck what proved to be the winner 12 minutes from the end. Whitchurch Alport needed a penalty shoot out to progress at the expense of Pershore Town after the sides were tied at 4-4 after 90 and 120 minutes. The story was a similar one to that at Vauxhall Motors with Alport goingtwo goals down early on before storming into a 4-2 lead through goals from Dean Twigg (twice), Luke Walley and Nick Marley. But the visitors scored twice to force extra time, and in the end Alport won the penalty shoot out 4-3. Ten of our clubs exited the competition at the hands of teams from other leagues, although there were a few hard luck stories along the way. St Helens Town were two down at half time at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare, but Joel Douglas pulled a goal back with seven minutes remaining and Town came desperately close to forcing extra time when they hit the post with virtually the last kick of the game. Widnes conceded in the 88th minute to lose 2-1 at home to Glasshoughton Welfare, and after leading Ellistown thanks to two goals from Louis Downs, Eccleshall shipped two goals in the last 12 minutes to eventually lose 3-2. Cammell Laird 1907 made a game of it at Maltby Main, eventually losing 4-2, and Barnoldswick Town lost 1-0 at home to Dunston UTS, who won the Vase in 2012.Maine Road found it predictably tough going against Northern Counties East Premier Division leaders Pontefract Collieries, losing 5-1 at Brantingham Road, and for 70 minutes Holker Old Boys put up decent resistance against another NCEL Premier club Garforth Town, before losing 3-1.Elsewhere, Parkgate beat Daisy Hill 4-0, Rossington Main also scored four in their 4-1 win over Cheadle Town, and what always looked to be a tough game away to Wolverhampton Sporting Community proved to be just that for FC Oswestry Town, who lost 6-0 in the Black Country. Two league games survived the wet conditions, one in each division, and the game in the Premier Division saw Runcorn Town maintain their 100% record at the top of the table, with a 3-2 win at home to Burscough. Town were in fact 2-1 down with 15 minutes to go, but Simon Thelwell's second goal of the game pulled them level and almost inevitably, August player of the Month Craig Cairns struck the winner eight minutes from time. When we last interviewed Laurence Reade, where we found out his Ground Count, his Worst and best game he ever wacth and a little factfile about him. Firstly , what encouraged you to start your football adventures? I had no option, my Dad was a massive Oxford United fan. It was either the Manor Ground, or bible class. It wasn't a tough choice!

What is the earliest memory of going to football as a kid? A reserve game at Oxford United vs West Ham. Trevor Brooking signing autographs during the entirety of half time. Classy act by a classy bloke.

Who was your biggest footballing idol as a kid? The one the only Gary Briggs, the hardest man I ever ever seen play. Finished at Blackpool, and is now a caretaker in Bispham. I'm not crossing him. 30 years later I'm still frightened of him

What do you enjoy the most about non league football? The people, doing it for the love of their community and the game.

How many grounds have you visited up to now? 1955, in 21 countries, and 3 continents. Clearly I need to get out more!

With us having our first Friday Night Game have u every been to a game on a Friday if so who was it and how good was the atmosphere? A lot- quite a few leagues have cottoned on to this, any game under lights is going to be good for me. Good luck with it, hope you get a huge crowd.

SQUIRES GATE YOUTH TEAM’S ROUND UP

This Sunday saw all four of our junior teams in action, our three new teams playing their first ever competitive games under the ‘Squires Gate’ banner. We start with the early game of the weekend with Mark Stanley’s Under 13’s who hosted Clifton Rangers in the Lancashire Cup. These two teams had history with Clifton denying Mark Stanley’s side the title last season with a draw on the last day. Goals from Tyler Stephenson, Harry Stanley and two from Joseph Hargreaves in a game where at half time you wouldn’t have put it past Gate to go on and carry on scoring. It was though an impressive comeback from the away side to fightback and force the game to penalties with a 4-4 draw. Unfortunately for Gate after some great penalties from both sides, it would be Clifton who go through to the next round. Squires Gate Under 13’s 4-4 Clifton Rangers Under 13’s (Clifton win on penalties)Nick Grindley’s Under 14’s side continued where they left of last season with an impressive 7-0 win against Poulton Under 14’s. Imaan Hussain led the way with four goals whilst striker partner Dan Fryer chipped in with two and there was an OG from Poulton. Poulton FC Under 14’s 0-7 Squires Gate Under 14’s Squires Gate Red’s and Titans faced off in their first league game of the season and first as Squires Gate. Josh Strachan’s side prevailed with some impressive football on show from the Reds. Goals from Charlie Strachan, James Calcher, Cian Turley, Sheik Fadairo, Anthony Cantley and two a piece from Piotr Wasik and Ben Stevely rounded off the impressive 10-0 victory for the Reds. Squires Gate Under 14’s Reds 10-0 Squires Gate Under 14’s Titans Next week’s Junior Fixtures are: Blackpool Rangers Titans Under 13’s v Squires Gate Under 13’s Squires Gate Under 14’s v Foxhall Under 14's Fulledge Colls Under 14’s v Squires Gate Under 14’s Titans Thornton Whites Under 14’s v Squires Gate Reds Under 14’s

Q&A WITH… TARRAN MOXON In a new regular feature, we interview Gate Attacker, Tarran Moxon. Moxon been at gate for 2 season and showed he has pace and goalsto get past lots of defnce in the past and has been no change so fair this season so we found out whaat team he is looking forward to facing this season, who his idol was as a Kid and what his What teams are you looking forward to facing this season? Mainly AFC Darwen as a good friend of mine plays in defence for them. Which teams do you think will be tough season? Both the Runcorn teams will be very tough as they have both had a brilliant start.

What encouraged you to start playing football? None of my family really have a sporting background, but I just had a knack for it from a young age.

Who was your footballing idol as a kid? Thierry Henry

If you weren't a Stiker, which other position would you love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions during your time? I enjoy playing left back, I like picking the ball up deep and running at people. Before I was a striker I played centre mid but that's a long time ago

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game? The biggest challenge is definitely the physicality, I'm only small so it's difficult when you come up against 6ft5 stocky centre halves

If you could pick one BPL Team for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why? Arsenal, as I've been a big fan since I was young.

What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? My first game was Newcastle vs Chelsea at st James park in the FA Cup, Chelsea won unfortunately.

Favourite ground you have ever played at? St James Park, would love to get the chance to play there again

What is your goal target for the season ? I'd say to hit double figures, I've only managed 1 so far which is disappointing but I'm sure if I work harder the goals will come

If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why? Dennis Bergkamp, the magic he brought to the game was a joke, so much creativity. Next would be Thierry Henry as he's always been my favourite player. Third and finally I'd probably say Marcus Rashford, I'm a massive fan of his attitude, desire and confidence, especially at such a young age.

What the first thing you do before any match? Strap my ankles up as they are made of toffee.

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Give all the other players a hand shake, get our heads on the game.

What can you do on the pitch when you feel that Gate aren’t in good form? Try to encourage the rest of the team as much as possible, keep everyone motivated work even harder.

What’s the dressing room morale like after not winning yet in the league? Everyone seems to have each other's back now, things are looking better and heads are starting to lift.

What European team who u loved for Gate to go up against in champions league? PSG Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe are frightening.

Prediction for today's game? I'd like to say it'll be 2-0 to Gate, we are due a win and a clean sheet. We've got the quality, just need a bit of luck and everyone to work hard for the whole 90 minutes.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE END OFEUROPEAN CALLAGHAN’S GAP THE CUP CAPLESS KICKS OFF

1977 1955

.On 7 September 1977, Liverpool midfielder Ian Callaghan made his third England appearance--a record 11 years and 49 days after his previous one. A Liverpool player since the start of his professional career in 1960, Callaghan (pictured at far left) earned his first England cap at he age of 24 in a June 1966 friendly against Finland (England won 30). His second came the following month in the World Cup, as England beat France 2-0 in the group stage. It was his only appearances of the tournament, which England went on to win. Although his failure to take part in the final meant that he did not receive a winner's medal at the time, he eventually received one in 2009, along with all of the other squad members. Despite his perfect record, he then went over a decade without playing for the national team. He continued to star for Liverpool, however, winning a total of five league titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, and two European

TAKING INVINCIBITILY TO WHOLE NEW LEVEL

1989

On 9 September 1989, Steaua Bucureşti lost their first domestic match in over three years when rivals Dinamo Bucureşti finally ended their unbeaten streak at an incredible 119 games. That run stretched back to the first match of the 1986-87 season when Steaua, who already were the defending Divizia A and European Cup champions, beat Argeș Pitești 1-0 on opening day. Led by midfielder Gheorghe Hagi, who had signed for them the previous winter, they went undefeated that season, winning the league with a record of 25 wins and 9 draws. They also won that season's Cupa României, beating Dinamo in the final. They repeated their undefeated double the next season (including a league record of 30 wins and 4 draws and a belated cup win over Dinamo after Steaua walked out of the final in protest of a decision by the referee to disallow one of their goals), then completed another unbeaten double in the 1988-89 season (with a league record of 31 wins and 3 draws and a third consecutive win over Dinamo in the Cupa României final). After winning their first two matches of the 1989-90 season, Steaua hosted Dinamo on 9 September, where the visitors proceeded to win 0-3. That result ended Steaua's domestic unbeaten run at a staggering 119 matches, consisting of 113 wins and only 16 draws. It remains the longest recorded streak in the history of the sport.

THAT’S WHY YOU’VE GOT KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL On 10 September 2010, FAR Rabat goalkeeper Khalid Askri committed a blunder that made him an instant internet celebrity. It happened during a Coupe du Trône match against FAR Rabat's Moroccan league rivals, Maghreb Fez. Askri and his counterpart had done well to keep the match scoreless to force a decision by penalty shootout. There, Askri did well to parry a shot by a Maghreb player. After knocking the ball away, he jumped to his feet and faced the stands, pounding his chest. But he failed to notice that, after landing outside the goal, the ball's spin carried it in. The shooter noticed it, however, and brought it to the attention of the referee, who awarded the goal. Maghreb went on to win the shootout, 0-0 (7-6). Askri's mistake hit YouTube shortly afterward and immediately went viral, with over a million views in the first week. But Askri's notoriety did not end there; just a few days later, an opposing player robbed the ball
