Tuesday 30th October 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION /Attendance:60 Squires Gate’s unbeaten run was cruelty halted at the hands of Irlam on Tuesday nightThe visitors were four goals in front after just 35 minutes with Gate blown away. Winger Marcus Perry struck three goals in 28 minutes to shock Andy Clarkson’s side who despite having plenty of possession couldn’t test the keeper. Matthew Boland then added a fourth goal in similar fashion with ten minutes of the first half left. Half Time: Squires Gate 0-4 Irlam Like chalk and cheese, the second half saw a vast improvement from Gate. Keeper Ben Fletcher had to be alert at the start of the second half when he made two fab puppies saves when one on one. Manager Andy Clarkson made a double change ten minutes into the second half and a near instant impact. Brett Dawson with the confidence to fire first time beating the keeper after just four minutes on the pitch.

Another sub, Joey Mullen, came close to adding another for Gate with a fierce strike from outside the box. The ball fell to the midfielder but the Irlam keeper was equal. The visitors efficiency was in play again when they added a fifth goal in the 76th minute. Jordan Buckley showing his strength to hold off his man before turning and firing past Fletcher. Brett Dawson then grabbed his second of the game a minute after Irlam’s fifth when he tried his luck with a long range effort which beat the keeper.

Saturday 3rd November 2018/Vestacare Stadium/FA Vase Round 2/Attendance:110 Squires Gate bowed out of the FA Vase on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Division One North side Avro. Manager Andy Clarkson made several changes to his side after Tuesday night defeat to Irlam. Defenders Dave Rossall and Saul Thorpe came into the back four with Joey Mullen preceded in midfield. The homeside took the lead 12 minutes into the first half. With Gate down to ten men due to Riccardo Egidi changing his shorts, the homeside struck taking advantage. Winger Kane Wallwork firing last Ben Fletcher to open the scoring. Newly appointed player/assistant manager Joe Booth came close to levelling the game just minutes later when he and Brett Dawson linked up. Booth’s shot though was straight at the keeper. Avro came close again in a fast opening 20 minutes. They struck the post from a freekick before firing over from the rebound. Gate’s best chance of the first 20 minutes came from striker Riccardo Egidi. Still looking for his first goal for the club, Egidi was denied by a fine save when he headed Adam Sumner’s freekick towards goal, only to be denied by a fine save. Avro doubled their lead in frustatring fashion from a Gate point of view. From the corner the biggest man on the pitch was left unmarked to head in past Fletcher to make it 2-0 Gate were gifted a lifeline in the game when an Avro midfielder was sent off!

The referee judging that Louis Potts had put his head towards Joey Mullen

Half Time: Avro 2-0 Squires Gate Gate had a shuffle round in personal at half time with Dean Ing coming on for Andy Richards with Joey Mullen moving to right back. It was Mullen who came close on 57 minutes when an Avro clearance came out to him but he fired over with a first time effort. A minute later and Gate would get on the scoresheet. Striker Riccardo Egidi opening his account for the club when he headed in Adam Sumner’s cross. Gate had plenty of possession in the game but just didn’t test the home keeper enough. A lovely 8 pass move created a chance for Ryan Riley, but his shot was straight at the keeper. Gate had a late chance for a freekick on the edge of the box, but Adam Sumner’s strike was straight at the keeper who saved well, Gate couldn’t convert the corner. Late into the last five minutes of normal time, the homeside saw another player dismissed. This time the goal scorer Mike Stockdale was sent off for a second yellow. Gate though couldn’t take advantage of the two dismissals in the game and exited the FA Vase.

AWAY DUGOUT

LEE DUCKWORTH Lee joins in Winsford back in 2015 when the old manager Rob Byrne resigned from his position earlier that week. Since then he has lead Winsford to a mid table finished in the past 2 season. However this season hasn't gone to well at the moment him and his team sit bottom of the league and hasn't won a game in nearly 10 games. He knows today game with Andy Side is not going Even tho Gate come into today of a upsetting lost in the Vase on Saturday. Both teams will be looking to change this run in forum tonight and lets hope it a good game.

HISTORY OF THE BLUES Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913 but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with under Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. Under John Williams in the 1970’s they had the most successful period in their history winning the Cheshire League and the Challenge Cup on several occasions. In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were played in front of crowds of over 3,500. The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 4-1 victory over local rivals Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as Winsford United won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Winsford United have a pedigree of producing fine players who have gone on to perform at a higher level. The likes of Wayne Collins and Andy Oakes have come through the ranks, netting the club transfer fees and sell-on clauses which have been used to improve the infrastructure of the club amongst other things. A period of consolidation in the 2000’s was ended with relegation to Division Two, and with it, a change of policy to concentrate on recruiting and developing local talent. To this end Dave Twite was brought in as Manager in 2003 and three successful seasons followed, however, promotion was missed each season by just a single point. 2006/2007: Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the helm in 2006 and secured promotion. However, the duo moved on to Woodley Sports at the end of the season, taking with them the core of the side. 2007/2008, 2008/2009: This paved the way for two seasons under Joe Gibiliru and he marshalled the side to a respectable 12th place finish in the first season but the second season saw the Blues saved from relegation only in the last match of the campaign. 2009/2010: There followed an unsettled season that started with Terry Murphy in charge and then Mike Alcock and Tony Ledwards took over the reins. With relegation staring them in the face Dave Twite returned and along with Mike Alcock they saved the Blues from what had looked like certain relegation. 2010/2011: The club re-appointed former Manager Chris Willcock, who oversaw a successful start to the season, but in February there was to be a feeling of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Assistant Manager Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place. A memorable night at the end of the campaign saw a 1-0 victory in the League Challenge Cup over promoted and hot favourites New Mills. 2012/2013: There followed a season with Ian Street in charge and the end of the campaign saw the team finish in a creditable seventh place. 2013/2014: In close season Lloyd Morrison took over the reins coinciding with plenty of good news off the pitch... Winsford Town Council became the club’s main sponsor, a relationship that promised to last for many years. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. 2014/2015: However, with things on and off the pitch seemingly going so well the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC and he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement was reached on Winsford’s terms. Eddy Haslam took over the hot seat and incredibly cobbled together a side to begin the campaign well, including runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase. However, a poor run of results saw Eddy leave by mutual consent paving the way for Rob Byrne to take charge of The Blues. There was also a satisfying end of season victory over Congleton Town in the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. 2014-2015: Rob Byrne continued as manager in the next season which saw mixed fortunes but in the end the team finished in a respectable 12th place. 2015/2016: The summer of saw a frenzy of activity off the field with much work being undertaken on the pitch in the hope of resolving the problems with flooding that blighted much of the previous season, particularly important with 1874 Northwich agreeing to stay at the Barton Stadium for a further two seasons. The new season also saw two important developments within the community with an Under-21’s team being entered in the Cheshire Under-21’s League and the welcoming under the Winsford umbrella of Winsford Wolves VIFC, a visually impaired team. Three months into the season the Blues found themselves without a manager when promotion at work led to Manager Rob Byrne reluctantly resigning the post. Although there were several high profile applicants, the position was handed to long time Winsford stalwart Lee Duckworth and he took over as Player/Manager. He immediately began rebuilding the team and concentration was placed on fitness and discipline. The Blues finished the season in fourteenth place. There was no hesitation in appointing the same management team for the 2016/17 season and there was clearly a policy of bringing more local players through although still retaining the players who had performed well in the previous campaign. After a start dogged by inconsistency the team settled down to hopefully climb towards the desired top six place at the end of the season. However, mixed results saw the team finish in a disappointing thirteenth position. The management team were deservedly retained for the new campaign and quality signings leave the supporters optimistic for a successful season.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WINSFORDD LITHERLAND REMCYA GREGSON 80

1 1

WINSFORD UNITED ANDDROVO 18

SATURDAY 27TH OCTOBER 2018//NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/LITHERLAND SPORTS PARK /HT:0-1 :/ATT:61

The Blues travelled to a sunny but bitter cold Litherland Sports Centre looking for a much-needed three points that would hopefully take them out of the bottom spot in the league. There were no fewer than five new faces on view with the return of Matthew Green in goal, Kyle McGonigle in midfield and Andy Keogh up front. New to the club were experienced striker Obi Anoruo and left back Dieter Downey. There was a promising start for the visitors with Damian Skolorzynski’s second minute cross being met by Obi Anoruo who was unlucky to see his shot blocked on the line. The play went straight to the other end where a turn and shot from Warren Jevons flew over the bar. The Blues looked certain to open the scoring on seven minutes when Joe Duckworth, making his first league start, received the ball on the edge of the six-yard box, but with an open goal in front of him his first effort hit the post and the second hit the recovering goalkeeper. There was almost a spectacular debut for Kyle McGonigle when his effort from the halfway line saw Gerard Walker in the Litherland goal, backpedalling to tip the ball over the bar. With play going from one end to the other Declan Gregson was the next to go close, his 15th minute drive being tipped over the bar by Matt Green. GOAL!! Duckworth made up for his earlier miss with a smart piece of play on 19 minutes leading to Anoruo opening the scoring. Receiving a pass on the left edge of the area the seventeen-year-old unselfishly squared the ball to the Blues number nine who drove it high into the right corner for what was a deserved lead. Duckworth had a chance to increase the lead on the stoke of half time when he made space on the edge of the box, but his shot flew inches wide of the upright. Duckworth had a chance to increase the lead on the stoke of half time when he made space on the edge of the box, but his shot flew inches wide of the upright. Winsford found themselves under sustained pressure in the early stages of the second period with Jevons being the main creator and on 50 minutes Green had to be on his toes to make a low save off the number ten’s snap shot. The hosts piled on the pressure as they sought to find an equaliser and a mad scramble in the Blues six-yard 01 GERARD STEPHEN LUKE box had the small bands of travelling supporters holding their 01 Matthew Green WALKER breath. Winsford gradually got back into the game and should 02 Damian Skolorzynski probably have added a second goal on 69 minutes when Anoruo’s 02 JAKE CONNOR 03 Dieter Downey pinpoint pass released Andy Keogh but with just the goalkeeper 03 DAVID CRIST to beat a moment’s hesitation allowed Walker to save at his feet 04 Lee Jones 04 COLYFA KAMARA Two minutes later a very poor linesman’s decision denied the 05 Liam Delaney 05 JACK RILEY possibility of a goal for Anoruo. When the ball was released from 06 Clayton McDonald midfield at least two Blues players were offside, but the front man 06 Anthony Cato 07 Kyle McGonigle certainly wasn’t one of them and with the hosts defence standing 07 Jason McShane still he should have been allowed to a one-on-one with the goal08 Ryan Hopper 08 Anthony Lipson keeper. But the Assistant’s premature flag denied the opportuni09 Obi Anoruo ty. GOAL!! There was disaster for Winsford on 82 minutes when a 09 Colin McDonald 10 Andrew Keogh defensive error allowed the hosts to equalise. A through ball 10 Warren Jevons should have been dealt with but it was missed allowing Gregson 11 Joe Duckworth 11 Declan Gregson to run through and lift the ball over Green and into the net. Chances in the remaining minutes mostly fell to Litherland but a 12 LIAM COLLINS 12 LEE MCEVILLY long throw in injury time found Clayton McDonald but his header 14 ADIL AJMAL was well held by Walker. 14 PAUL FOY 15 RYAN DOBSON

LAST TIME AT THE BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM

SQUIRES GATE PETT 37,74

2 2 WINSFORD UNITED

SATURDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2017/NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/BRIAN ADDISON STADIUM /HT:1-1 :/ATT:90

Squires Gate battled back to pick up a point at home against Winsford United from losing positions twice in the match. New signing Joey Mullen made his first start for the club having featured from the bench in Gate's last home game, he replaced Dean Ing who was unavailable. Defender Jordan O'Mahoney also returned to the side having last featured in Gate's 1-0 loss away at Bootle where he picked up MOM. The visitors could have opened the scoring after just a minute from a corner. The corner was taken short before the resulting shot was headed off the line by Andrew Richards. Gate had to be patient and concentrate at the back for the first half against a side who has won three of their last four games, only losing to form team Widnes last Monday. They made the break through in this one after 16 minutes. A simple ball through found the run of Mike Koral who slotted past Ben Fletcher to give Winsford the lead Gate's first equaliser of the game had a large hint of good christmas luck, something which Gate have been missing this season. It was Gary Pett who fresh of a hatrick in his last game against Barnton, beat the offside trap, before chipping the ball over the onrushing keeper for a classy finish. Sadly for midfielder Joey Mullen, making his first start for the club, his afternoon would end short in the 41st minute. He pulled up and had to be replaced just before half time by Ryan Charnley. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-1 Winsford United The second half started with a golden chance for Gate to take the lead. Tarren Moxon had two bites at goal but was unlucky with both. The first was fired straight at the keeper who couldn't keep hold of the ball and when the ball came back to the winger he could only put the second attempt over the bar. Winsford would take the lead again in the 57th, this time from a freekick. Winger Scott Taylor, who caused Gate problems all afternoon, whipped the ball into defender William Foster at the back post for him to poke home. Gate had Ben Fletcher to thank on 62 minutes when he dived on what looked like a Winsford goal to stop the ball on the line and keep his side in the game. That save would become all the more important ten minutes later when Gary Pett struck again to level the game for his side. More luck for Gate as the ball fell fortunately to the striker, he did well to keep the ball under control before firing past the visiting keeper Matthew Green. Winsford went close again late on when player/manager Lee Duckworth's freekick struck both the crossbar then post before being cleared by Gate. The homeside also went close with one of the last kicks of the game when Gary Pett headed over from the penalty spot, inches away from completing his hatrick.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid This week's NLP programme column below, written by Matt Badcock. It’s that time of the year again where the FA Cup take centre stage – first round proper weekend is upon us and we await to see where this year’s FA Cup shocks will be. After a season where Lincoln City remarkably reached the quarter-final against Arsenal, last year was a bit quieter with no Non-League representation in the third round. Although we still had some good moments to enjoy along the way. I fancy the Non-League flag to be flying high again in 2018-19, though. It’s always struck me how the Sliding Doors effect is brought into even sharper focus when it comes to the FA Cup. The ifs, buts and maybes that populate football chat after every game, can often be the difference between a money spinning run and sitting at home watching someone else enjoy one instead. Inevitably, if a club is to have a good run then they will have had the run of the green you need to win close games. And that’s the beauty of it. Despite the best efforts of people to talk down the competition, for Non-League clubs it still feels very much alive. You watch this season. If (when) the scalp of Football League side is claimed this coming weekend, the victory will soon be followed with words like, magic and romance. And that’s all good. Because that’s exactly it is. But a lot of it will be centred on the argument they are ingredients that have gone missing from the competition. For Non-League clubs I’d argue against that claim. Maybe at the latter stages for the bigger Premier League clubs, but here it’s going well, thanks. It is reason for a club to dream, can launch careers and transform long-term fortunes. Even more so with the welcome doubling of the FA Cup prize money – with the introduction of handing losing clubs some cash in the extra preliminary and preliminary rounds also making a big difference. The FA Cup is a perfect vessel to put money into the game through results on the pitch. Personally, I’d like to see some of the pound notes ring-fenced for clubs to use on infrastructure, equipment or ground issues. But there has to be an appreciation that if a club wins money it is entitled to use how it sees fit. If that means bringing in a new striker to help the season, then that’s their right. Of course, for most Non-League clubs the FA Cup is already over for another year. For many it was finished at the beginning of August. For others, just making it through a couple of rounds was success enough. I took a trip to Lymington Town for their second round qualifying clash with Torquay United. Although the Wessex League side were well beaten on the day, it was obvious to see what their slice of FA Cup history had brought the club, with an ex-Football League side at home in front of the BBC online cameras. You can be sure the interest it created would have brought in more fans. The stories are only just being written. And we at The NLP can’t wait to cover them.

AROUND THE LEAGUE Five clubs will represent the league in the Third Round of Buildbase FA Vase, although the identity of one of them has yet to be decided following the 2nd Round games at the weekend. Three of the ties matched clubs from our league together, the first of those on Friday night when Runcorn Town won 3-1 at Vauxhall Motors. A healthy crowd of 297 saw Simon Thelwell set Town on the road to victory with two first half goals and Harry Brazel added third early in the second half. Ben Holmes gave the Motormen something to take from the game with a consolation goal in the final minute. On Saturday, two early goals from Kane Wallwork and Mike Stockdale set Avro on the way to a 2-1 win over Premier Division opponents in Squires Gate, and in the other First Division North v Premier Division tie, Prestwich Heys and Northwich Victoria failed to produce a goal after 120 minutes of play, and will replay in midweek. In the other four ties, two of our sides progressed to the next round, but it was the end of the road for two others. After a goalless first half, Irlam eventually won 3-1 at home to Hemsworth Miners Welfare, with Connor Martin, Connor Braithwaite and Liam Pollitt on target. Silsden won by the same score at home to Bedlington Terriers, bouncing back from the loss of an early goal. Joe Gaughan scored twice in the space of four second half minutes to turn the tide in favour of the Cobbydalers. However, last season's semi-finalists 1874 Northwich fell at the first hurdle this time around, going down 2-0 at Newcastle Benfield in their first tie of this season's competition, and Garstang were four goals down at half time to Sunderland RCA, eventually losing 6-2. There were six games in the Premier Division, and City of Liverpool continue to set the pace at the top following their 3-0 win at home to Abbey Hey. Craig Cairns, Jamie MacDonald and Luke Denson were on target for the Purps, who stay five points clear of Congleton Town in second place, who won 3-0 at Ashton Athletic on Friday night. Two late goals from Saul Henderson made the game safe for the Bears. Ryan Cox, Steven Jones and Carl Peers all scored in Bootle's 3-0 win at Hanley Town that keeps them in fourth place, two points ahead of Barnoldswick Town, who beat West Didsbury & Chorlton 2-1 at home thanks to a double from Zack Dale. In the derby clash at Victoria Park Carl Grimshaw's 79th minute goal seemed to have sealed the points for Charnock Richard at Burscough, but Yves Zama struck in the 90th minute to salvage a point for the home side. Litherland REMYCA came from behind to earn a 2-1 win at Whitchurch Alport, thanks to goals from Ashton Clements and Jack Riley. In the First Division North, Longridge Town extended their lead at the top of the table, winning 3-1 at Nelson, while nearest challengers Carlisle City were held to a 2-2 draw at Steeton. Paul Turner struck a hat trick for Longridge, and Carlisle's hopes of matching their result were dashed by an 90th minute equaliser from Steeton's Alistair Morgan. Shelley stay in fourth place after a 2-1 at AFC Blackpool that also involved a 90th minute goal, the winner from Emerson Bradshaw. Lower Breck were the highest scorers of the day in the division, with Stephen Milne's hat trick being the highlight of their 5-0 win over AFC Darwen. Anyone arriving late to the game between Bacup Borough and Daisy Hill would have had cause for regret as the score was 2-2 after 11 minutes although Borough eventually ran out 4-2 winners. Daisy Hill remain just above the relegation zone, but are now just one point ahead of Holker Old Boys who won 1-0 at bottom club Atherton LR, thanks to a Nathan Reid goal in the 47th minute. In the other game, AFC Liverpool won 2-1 at Chadderton. The First Division South is still headed by Rylands, who won 3-0 at Eccleshall thanks to first half goals from Liam Moran, Gary Kenny and Jamie White. Wythenshawe Amateurs are second after their 1-0 win at home to St Martins, Jordan Burton's goal proving to be decisive, and they are level on points with Abbey Hulton United whose 2-1 win at Cheadle Town was notable for the fact that all the goals arrived in the opening five minutes. Wythenshawe Town's 7-1 win at Stone Dominoes was the eye catching score of the day, but even more remarkable was that seven different scorers shared the Town goals. FC Oswestry Town continued their recent good form with a 2-0 win over Cheadle Heath Nomads, Liam Parry and David Howarth on target, and Sandbach United continued their climb up the table with a win by the same score at Maine Road, thanks to goals from Matthew Pearson and Aidan Haughton. Ryan Malone and Samuel Houghton both scored twice in Barnton's 6-2 win at Cammell Laird 1907, and it was a red letter day for Ellesmere Rangers who picked up their first win of the season, and their first in our league, with a 1-0 win at Alsager Town, thanks to a goal in the 8th minute from Joseph Imlach. In the other game New Mills won 3-1 at home to Stone Old Alleynians.
