I’d like to wish Danny Under 13’s Manager the best of luck, and I hope we Mick Bishop have a change of fortunes in the Groundsman forthcoming weeks.” We are still looking for a No.2 to assist Danny Brian Addison in his new role. You can also have a look at how the two Instagram teams compare going into todays game in our STATS YOUR @squiresgatefc LOT! feature.

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S. E. I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.

Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship) Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.

Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.

Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.

Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.

Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship) Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.

Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship)

One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him. Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season. Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood. Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season. Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White) Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team. Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season. Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

1 4 GATES STILL WITHOUT A RUN Chance early on for Gate, Richards forward from full back unleashed a shot, which just grazed the crossbar. Good early pressure from Gate saw Billy McKenna in on goal but his shot dropped wide of the post. Gate didn’t allow Colne to get going in the open exchanges and should have capitalised on the chances they had. Jack Cook was the next for Gate to have a chance at goal after the ball fell to him from the corner but his shot thundered over the bar. Colnes first chance fell to prolific striker Jason Hart. He latched onto a long ball forward but he was cut out and the ball cleared by Brett Ferguson before he could get his shot away. Chance for Gate followed first through Cummings whose cross couldn’t find anyone and McKenna whose shot was pulled wide. After a good spell of possession for the away side the ball was played forward to there right back. He played the ball into Spencer Jordan but his shot fell wide of the post. Gate came back with an attack of their own after good possession of the ball, Richards sent the ball into the box but no one was at the back post to meet the cross. A lapse in concentration from Gates backline opened the scoring for Colne. Fletcher running past the ball allowed Jason Hart to nip past him and roll the ball into the back of the net and open the scoring. Colne scored soon after in a quick fire double. No one reacted quick enough from the corner and Young headed the ball in to put Gate 2-0 up. Colne had turned on the style after going 2-0 up and made it three soon after. Ben Allen found himself one-on-one with Colquhoun who Allen beat to smash the ball past Fletcher. Gate tried to get themselves back into the game late on but nobody could meet Penswick’s ball at the back post. Gate started the second half a lot better and after good early pressure almost grabbed a goal back. Billy Mckenna crossing the ball in from the corner but nobody could reach the ball, which was put out for another corner. The follow up corner was played back to Cook on the edge of the box but his shot was well saved. Colne had a chance to make it 4 but Jason Hart dragged the ball wide of the post. It was a nervy start to the half from Colne but Gate couldn’t capitalise on this to make it count. Brett Ferguson forward from left back had had a rare chance but his shot went well over the bar. Ash Rowley made a good impact after coming off the bench, a couple of step over on the edge of the box before picking his spot and firing into the bottom corner. Gate had claims of a penalty turned down after a foul in the box, the ref allowed play on and Westwood hit the ball over. The ref didn’t decided to pull the play back even though no advantage was gained. Billy Mckenna almost caught Colnes goalkeeper out with his first time shot but his shot grazed the crossbar much to Colnes delight. Ben Allen had a chance for Colne but his first time shot was fired over the bar. Gate had a late chance but Nathan Trout headed wide from the corner. Colne had the last chance of the game and made it count. Dom Craig of the bench curled the ball into the top corner with the last kick of the game.

ANOTHER HEAVY DEFEAT FOR MANAGERLESS GATE Saturday 29th September 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Pictures by Albert Cooper Manager less Squires Gate made the journey to Runcorn Town on Saturday afternoon hoping to grab there first win of the season under club secretary John Maguire who took charge of the team. Maguire bought in Benjamin and Josh Kay back into the team after they had missed the last couple of games. He also welcomed Ryan Riley back to the club after his previous spell at the club last year and also Alex Mckendrick who was back after recovering from his injury. Gate could have gone ahead early on through Billy McKenna. After good work on the left Rowley sent the ball into the middle of the box but McKenna connected with the ball but saw the shot saved. Gate would be made to rue their chance, as their hosts would open the scoring. Poor defending from the corner allowed Marvin Molyneux to nip in at the back post from nothing more than a yard out to open the scoring. Town went on to control the game and found the net again 10 minutes later. Rob Ablewhite pouncing on lethargic defending to slot the ball past Fletcher in net. The two goals were enough to wake Gate up and motivate them to move up a gear and start playing their football. But the same defensive laziness would rear its head again after a good spell from Gate. Town captain Paul Shanley beating his man with ease before moving the ball onto his stronger foot and putting the home side 3-0 up. One positive for Gate was there desire to play out of defence and keep possession of the ball. But Gate was almost made to pay when playing at the back Abblewhite nicked the ball whilst pressing but Fletcher saved well after coming off his line. Runcorn would pile on the misery for Gate with the last kick of the first half. Captain Paul Shanley again finding space coming in off the wing to find the back of the net. After collecting their thoughts and re grouping at half time Gate went on to have a dominant second half. Gate collectively as a team kept the ball a lot better seeing large spells of domination. But still the Blackpool side couldn’t find a cutting edge to score there way back into the game. A nice move was building from the back and moving Gate up the field. Debutant Stayte laid the ball of to Buchan who in turn found Rowley but his shot fell wide of the post. The returning Josh Kay had the next chance as Gate began to grow in the game but his shot could on find the netting above the crossbar not below. Sub Aaron Clarke nearly opened his account for the club after picking up the rebound from Ferguson’s shot

12th November 1985 Here in THE YEAR THEY WERE BORN feature, we focus on BRETT FERGUSON and life back in 1985.

THE YEAR IN FOOTBALL It was a big year in football, and it was dominated by two disasters. At Bradford City, 55 spectators died and more than 200 were injured when a fire ripped through the Main Stand during their game against Lincoln City. This was a wake up call for English clubs to improve the state of their grounds and take more drastic safety measures. Less than three weeks after the Bradford fire, 39 fans were trampled to death on the terraces of Heysel Stadium where Liverpool lost 1-0 to Juventus in the European Cup final. As a result of this, English fans were banned indefinitely from European competitions with Liverpool ordered to serve an extra three years whenever the English clubs were re-admitted. Howard Kendall’s Everton side beat neighbours Liverpool to the league title, while Tottenham and Man United followed closely behind. The toffees also won the Cup Winners’ Cup to complete a cup double for the club, however they were denied entry to Europe because of the Heysel Disaster. Stoke City set a new record as they finished bottom with 17 points and only picked up 3 wins throughout the season. Blackpool won promotion from the Fourth Division in second place. TOP 5 SONGS THAT WEEK #1 Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin - Separate Lives #2 Scritti Politti - Perfect Way #3 Mr. Mister - Broken Wings #4 Aretha Franklin - Who’s Zoomin’ Who #5 Heart - Never WHAT HAPPENED IN 1985 EastEnders was aired for the first time. Roger Moore appears in his last James Bond film. Scotland manager Jock Stein collapses and dies from a heart attack at the end of his teams 1-1 draw with Wales in Cardiff, which secured Scotlands place in the World Cup. #1 BOX OFFICE FILM OF 1985 Back To The Future had a total gross of $211m which beat Rambo by $60m.

It was time for a fresh start and Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the team and the Blues led the table from early season right up to the end when they were promoted to Division One as champions. Surprisingly Chris and John left at the end of the season and moved to Woodley Sports, taking the best players with them. Once again Winsford were on the lookout for a new Manager and this time they turned to the Liverpool area for Joe Gibiliru who had managed St Helens Town in the First Division. Joe was faced with rebuilding the team and in spite of this he guided the team to a respectable 12th place. Experienced players were brought in for the 2008-2009 season and this has had an immediate effect with several good performances but it was not to last and the team fought a desperate battle against relegation. A fresh start was made for the 2009-2010 season and once again Winsford turned to local talent with Terry Murphy as Manager and Mike Alcock and Tony Ledwards as Assistant Managers. Unfortunately both Terry and Mike finished with health problems and Tony was handed the Manager’s job. It was still a struggle with a team of youngsters and Dave Twite returned to the hot seat and saved them from relegation, winning his first six matches in charge. However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch, the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC as Joint Manager and not only that, he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement was reached on Winsford’s terms.

SQUIRES GATE 12-2 BJFF VIPERS BJFF Vipers were unfortunate that they came up against a majorly impressive Squires Gate team. Within the first minute a flowing move from kick off forced the away keeper into a smart save. The play was terrific to watch and quickly resulted in a fine headed finish from Lucas Miller after a pin point cross from Ethan Goulding. Constant forward playing football meant the keeper needed to be in top form, which he was. Goulding then got in on the act himself with a cool finish. Then a quick fire double for Luca Stefani, the second after a sublime pass from Josh Dolby- Armstrong. Stefani competed his hat-trick after Jack Robinson switched the play and Stefani scored past the one coming keeper. Two substitutes Luke Myers and Nathan Nicholas then got themselves on the scoresheet immediately after coming on with well taken goals with superb supply from Miller. The first half scoring was complete when Connah Trevelyan scored with the last kick of the half. However the most impressive point of the first half was the back four of Roman BellSmith, Adam McIntyre, Luca Greenwood and Oscar Dugdale. The second half was stop start with numerous substitutions, however that was shown in the play, although very dominant for Gate scoring twice once through Robinson after a fine individual goal and Brogan Grundy netting his first of the game. Then slip in concentration let BJFF score with a delightful chip and then a rebound after Harry Ahern made a superb stop. The second goal sprung Gate back into action with Grundy getting his second of the game and man of the match Dolby-Armstrong score the goal of the game with a strike from well outside of the box into the top right hand corner.

WINSFORD UNITED 2-1 SQUIRES GATE Sat 12 Oct, 2013 This was a match of great importance to the pride of both clubs. Both were on the loosing end of a 5 nil defeat four days earlier, and they made four changes each to their line ups, in an attempt to overcome the problems they encountered on Tuesday. Gate were first to show in the attack and had three corners in the first five mins. With less than ten minutes on the clock, their pressure paid off, when home keeper Nathan Beckett, dived at the feet of Jack Sowerby, and sent him flying through the air, for a penalty. Sowerby calmly walked up to the ball and sent the keeper the wrong way, to give the visitors the lead on 9 mins. Gate seemed to make more furies into the oppositions half, but without making Nathan Beckett have to make a save. While at the other end Ben Fletcher, was able to deal with all that came in his area, and when called to make a save look confident. But Harry Noon hit the cross bar after breaking down the right, and then on 40 mins. Lee Constantine beat the visitors defence and scored the equaliser. This brought more midfield clashes without making many scoring chances, and the teams went in for the interval looking as though either side could pick up three points. In the second half Gate were again taking the game to the home side, but were unable to penetrate the last line of defence, while United broke down the right, and Ben Fletcher, had to make a point blank save when Harry Noon, raced past the visiting defenders. Ben Fishwick got injured as he was tackled as he tried to set up attack, and had to limp off. Gate brought on fresh legs in the form of Jack Hindle, Benjamin Jakes, and Daniel Penswick, but the home defence stood firm, despite the constant attacking , and at last Harry Noon, took his chance and scored his first goal for Winsford in the 76th min. Gate piled

SQUIRES GATE 2-1 WINSFORD UNITED Sat 18 Jan, 2014 After holding a one minutes silence in respect for an old Squires Gate keeper "Jack the Cat" "JD" Jack Drinkwater who sadly passed away just after the xmas period. Gate kicked off in search of their first win since playing table topping Maine Road at the start of November last year. With six wins in their last six outings the visitors to The Royal British Legion could be forgiven for thinking a seventh win was on the cards against a Gate side who'd not won for over two months but with just 20 seconds of the game gone they found themselves one nil down. Jack Sowerby pushed the ball into space down the right hand side and delivered a pin point cross for Zach Clark to tap in at the back post. Winsfords first chance of note came on 20 minutes with a goal mouth scramble but Gate managed to clear the danger away. 3 minutes later Gate's Jamie Gibson found space on the edge of the area, Winsfords keeper Nathan Beckett pulling of a fine save to deny Gibson. Beckett produced a superb save on 42 mins, this time diverting Billy Mckenna's effort onto the crossbar and away for a corner. Winsford almost equalised just on half time but for Gate keeper Dave Rogerson putting off his opponent who skied his volley when he should really have done better. Into the second half and after soaking up Winsford attack for ten minutes the away side finally broke through. David Gremie finding himself in space 35 yards out, he looked up and let off a low pile driver beating Rogerson to make it one all. Rogerson pulled off two fine saves to deny the visitors taking the lead and how valuable those saves proved to be. On 70 minutes Zack Clark was brought down by the keeper in the area and Danny Penswick struck an unbeatable strike to put the home side back in front. With just minutes remaining Winsford almost levelled things but luck was not on their side today as the strikers lob went just wide of the post. Gate saw out the remainder of the game and thoroughly deserved all 3 points in an entertaining game.

SQUIRES GATE 2-2 Winsford United Sat 18 Oct, 2014 Squires Gate hosted Winsford United on Saturday at the Royal British Legion Stadium, looking to improve on their 0-0 draw with St Helens last Saturday. Gate made three changes from Saturday’s draw, Mark Buchan dropped to the bench with Ryan Riley coming in, Alex Colquhoun came in for Jack Cook and Hothersall came in for Jake Forshaw. It was a fairly even start to the game with both games looking even in the opening 20. Gate's real first chance came when Chris Anderson played a clever ball down the line to Jack Sowerby. Sowerby knocked the ball back to the on-rushing Harry Dunn but his shot was saved well and Gate couldn't capitalise from the corner. Gate could have had a penalty on the 35th minute, the ball swung in the penalty area was punched by Winsford's keeper who seemed to get more of Josh Westwood's head than the ball but the ref awarded a free kick to Winsford. Gate opened the scoring on the 44th minute Jack Sowerby picking the ball up on the edge of the area after a loose pass from the Winsford goalkeeper, after beating two defenders Sowerby slot the ball into the back of the net with great confidence. Into the second half and it didn't take Gate long to double their lead. Straight from kick off Harry Dunn attacked into Winsford half and passed the ball to Sowerby, he managed to control the ball in the box and side foot the ball to score his and Gates second goal. It would be fair to say that between the 44th minute and the 48th minute were the most entertaining of the game. As Winsford took the kick off after Sowerby's second of the game they managed to get themselves back into the game. The long ball up to the Winsford winger who nodded down for Ryan Mathews to get one back on the 47th minute for Winsford. Winsford could have had a second in quick succession had it not been for the quick, cat like reflexes of Ben Fletcher who saved well with his legs. Josh Westwood had the chance to make Gate's lead comfortable but his header from the corner was cleared of the line by Winsford. Gate were made to pay in the 66th minute the ball clipped in to defender Alex Bryne at the back post who finished well to equalise for Winsford.

WINSFORD UNITED 0-0 SQUIRES GATE Sat 07 March 2015 .Squires Gate travelled to Winsford on Saturday looking to continue their recent

good form. Gates last game out resulted in Victory for the Blackpool side. Two goals from Mark Buchan cancelling out the early opener from Sam Freakes. Gates opponents for the day, Winsford currently sit 6th in the form table with 3 wins, 2 draws and one defeat in the last 6 games. Gate sit 10th having lost one more game than Winsford. Gate made just the one change from Saturdays win with Josh Westwood coming back in at the back for the suspended Danny Penswick. It would be fair to say that the first half wasn't one of much quality. Both teams really struggled to play on what was a poor surface. Squires Gate only really had the one chance in the first half and even that never looked like a clear scoring opportunity. The long throw launched into the box was inches away from finding Mark Buchan but the Winsford defender just nipped in ahead of Buchan to clear the ball. Winsford had several shot's throughout the first half but none really tested Fletcher in net. The second half was much of the same unfortunately. Gate had a few more half chances but never really looked like scoring. Billy McKenna had the chance to open the scoring but after the ball was played across the face of the goal his shot was blocked. Gates only other real chance of the second half came from Mark Buchan. From the free kick just outside of the box he tried to catch the goal keeper out at his near post but the keeper got down well to save the goal bound shot. Not the best day at the office for Gate but with a clean sheet and a solid performance from the returning Josh Westwood there were positives to take from the game.

2010/2011

This week, we spoke to Winsford and Norwich fan Chris Appleton.

How do you think Winsford have coped so far? Are you happy with the way results? What do you think you need to do in order to progress throughout the season? I believe we aren’t far off to be honest, and we have coped well so far. Some results aren’t good enough, including the FA Cup defeat but if we bring some consistency into our game then we could be up there. You are currently 11th in the league while Gate are second bottom. Would you say that you are favourites to win the this game? Are their ever any favourites in a cup game? Others may see us as favourites but we have to realise that any cup game is a tough game and we have to treat it the same as any others. Every team dreams about going to Wembley. Have you been there on any occasion? Personally, I am a Norwich fan and witnessed the play off final win over Middlesbrough last season. It is a dream scenario to coach on the famous turf though! What has been your most memorable moment and game at Winsford? As under 21s manager, for me it has to be Jack Nicholls first ever goal for us at Bootle. Straight into the first team from our youth squad. Which players in the league do you think will cause the most threat to opponents this season? There’s some very good players in this league! But for me Dominic Marie and Jay Hart are the danger men! They’ve got pace and are lethal in front of goal. Which teams are you looking forward to going up against? We don’t expect the usual attendance but playing away at Chester in the Cheshire cup will be an experience. Top ground and facilities. What would you say has been the best goal ever scored, in any league? Very good question. Impossible to answer. Nick Powell at Wembley, Stuart Elliot for Vics against Moor Green or even Robbie Dale against Witton Albion. Non league is where the real magic is. If you could bring in 3 Premier League players of your choice, to Winsford. Who would they be? Well, again being a Norwich City fan I’d have to go for Russell Martin, Wes Hoolahan and Jack Butland. Finally, what’s your prediction for today’s game? Squires Gate 1-2 Winsford United Thanks for your time Chris.

QUE SERA, SERA… As football fans, we all dream of that trip to Wembley to see our team play. There’s very few ways that teams can get there - Getting to the semi finals of the FA Cup, which is highly unlikely for a team like Squires Gate. Could you imagine the likes of Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero, and Falcao playing at The Royal British Legion Stadium? I’m sure they would wake up thinking it was all of their Christmas’ come at once and would probably score for fun, even if Gate ‘parked the bus with the handbrake on’.

The FA Vase was staged for the first time in the 1974-75 season when it come in to replace the FA Amateur Cup, which was discontinued. As of 2013, the vase is now open to all clubs in level five to seven in the National League System, which is equivalent to levels nine to eleven of the overall English Football League system. It has given the chance to lower league clubs to get to Wembley, which is fantastic for the club and the supporters. Last season fellow NWCFL Premier Division side Glossop North End, were the runners up as they lost 2-1 after extra time to North Shields. Glossop had done the league and cup double and were looking to make history by winning the treble, however that was not the case, Glossop are now in the Evo Stick, after being promoted ahead of Runcorn Linnets. Glossop North End also made the final in 2009, where they finished runners up to eventual history makers Whitley Bay. Whitley Bay won the FA Vase in three consecutive seasons. Beating Wroxham 6-1 in 2010 and Coalville Town 3-2 in 2011. Billericay Town, Tiverton Town and Halesowen Town have won the trophy in two consecutive seasons. AFC Sudbury have to be the unluckiest team when it comes to Vase finals. They were formed in 1999 as Sudbury Town and Sudbury Wanderers merged. Sudbury Town reached the final once and drew the original game, and lost the replay. Then from 2003-2005 they reached THREE Vase finals and lost all of them and none of them were at Wembley. How’s that for bad luck then? Personally, after the start we have had in the league, and having been knocked out of the FA Cup already, I would love to see Gate have a good cup run. Last season, we got to the round of 16 where we were knocked out by runners up Glossop North End.

It was a fairly even start to the game with both teams having plenty of possession both looking to suss each other out early on. Gate's first real chance fell to top scorer Jack Sowerby but his snap shot was the wrong side of the post. Gate could have been ahead with 30 minutes gone but after beating his man Alex Murphy's shot was cleared of the line. Murphy wouldn't be denied a second time though good work from Harry Dunn to feed the ball through to find the run of Murphy who slotted the ball home to put Gate one up.

The second half started with the home side making a triple substitution. But it was Gate who could have had a second Hothersall's ball into the box but no Gate player could make any contact. It was the home side who drew back, a free kick just outside the area was rifled in by Danny Mahoney the Gate wall could have perhaps done better. To their credit Gate's heads didn't drop and the away side had the chance to go ahead, Alex Murphy playing the ball across the box but substitute Jake Forshaw couldn't connect at the back post. It would be Murphy who was again involved and can add another assist to his tally, his free kick was floated into the back post to find Josh Westwood who couldn't have connected any cleaner with the ball to make it 2-1 to Squires Gate. Gate put the game out of sight when Jack Sowerby scored his 13th of the season in all competitions he beat two defenders before slotting home showing great composure and technique. After the game Gate manager said "I'm very pleased with our performance today, we were solid, disciplined and effective throughout. We dealt with them with what they had to offer and looked dangerous going forward. We need to take today's performance into next Saturday's game so that we start picking up victories in the league.
