HERE’S WHAT THE GAFFERS SAY: LUKE EVANS Welcome everyone to the first of back to back home games for us starting with Winsford today. We come into this game off the back of two extremely encouraging performances firstly our trip to Whitchurch. Preparations couldn’t have gone any worse in all honesty with arriving at the ground just half an hour before kick off on a cold Monday night. Fortunately we started bright and took the lead and despite numerous chances at the Whitchurch goal we only went in with the one goal advantage. We came out second half very lacklustre and found ourselves 2-1 behind before deciding to start playing again but play we did creating chance after chance only for Dean Ing to equalise with just 2 minutes remaining. This was nothing more than we deserved but there was more to come with us conceding in the final minute of injury time from the penalty spot. We found this very hard to take and the feelings after the game were of complete disbelief of how we have come away from this game with nothing. To receive praise from your opposing manager is always nice but also goes a long way to prove how dominant we were in this game but ultimately goals win games and we came up short. Saturday was definitely an opportunity for us to make amends for the result on Monday against a team who had just changed their manager and also were showcasing 4 new signings. We started slow and were duly punished and for me deserved to be 2-1 down at half time on the balance of chances even if not necessarily balance of play. Half time was the easiest team talk we have had all season by simply saying to the players go and do to Congleton what Whitchurch had done to us. Second half we saw an amazing reaction and on that performance we would have beaten any team put in front of us. We created chance after chance and it seemed only a matter of time until we scored. It took a couple of changes to break the deadlock but both Josh Pollard and Jack Iley were fantastic the latter grabbing his first goal in a Squires Gate shirt. We thoroughly deserved the victory and hopefully we can push on and turn that feeling into a regular occurrence. We have been really pleased by the reaction of the players in the last couple of weeks and the progression is evident for all to see. We need to find a level of consistency now with our performance and we can then start looking up the league and leaving the bottom clubs to fight it out amongst themselves. Many thanks to all our travelling fans your support has been duly noted and hugely appreciated. We look forward to repaying you once again with another 3 points today although we respect how difficult today’s game is. Enjoy the game! Luke 4

LEE DUCKWORTH Ahead of the game tonight, manager Lee Duckworth gives his thoughts; “Good afternoon. I’ve kindly been asked to write this as an opposing manager, by the Squires Gate programme editor. I write this prior to our away game against Northwich Vics on Tuesday night so I have travelled either very happy or very disappointed to todays game. We have recently seen our team in steady form and last week culminated in a 6-0 win at home with 6 different scorers, which as any manager will tell you is a dream scenario. As a group, my lads have to push on now and ensure we can maintain some consistency in our performances. I do always enjoy our trips to Squires Gate as the set up is great with friendly people and a usually excellent playing surface. This is our second meeting of the season. The first was a nine goal thriller at our place. We started that game brightly and found ourselves 4-0 up after an hour. Then full credit to Squires Gate, they never gave up and in the end could feel aggrieved not to have snatched something as we switched off as a team. Squires Gate have since replaced their manager and seen a change of fortunes recently where they will feel disappointed not to have got something from Whitchurch away, and then elated at a valuable 3 points at Congleton. It should all lead into a very entertaining contest today where I am sure whoever wins will have had to be at their best. I’ll be hoping for a Winsford win. Enjoy the game!” Lee

WE WELCOME WINSFORD UNITED Winsford United were founded in 1883, as Over Wanderers and played football in the Welsh Combination Football League. They changed their name and moved to their current ground, the Barton Stadium (then called the Bean Latham Playing Field), a few years later. However, after excessive spending, the club soon folded.

2010, Ledwards stepped down as manager after a poor run of results and the club was taken over by a co-management team of Mike Alcock and Dave Twite, who effectively saved the team from relegation. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Alcock and Twite decided not to continue as managers and became involved in coaching and scouting roles instead.

They re-formed just before the outbreak of the First World War, and re-grouped after this had finished under a committee led by Mr. R. G. Barton, becoming a founder member of the Cheshire League. From then until the late 1970s, Winsford United played football locally in Cheshire. Highlights of this period included one FA Cup first round appearance, against Peterborough United, and Cheshire league wins in 1920–21 and 1976–77. During this period, in the late 1970s, the club also reached the quarter finals of the FA Trophy and featured future Welsh international goalkeeper Neville Southall.

Chris Willcock was announced as the new manager and later named Ian Street as his assistant, it was to be Willcock's second spell in charge of the club after leading them to promotion from North West Counties Division Two in 2007, Chris Willcock resigned as the Blues manager in early 2011 and assistant Ian Street was appointed as the new boss.

The Cheshire League merged with other regional divisions to become the North West Counties Football League in 1982, with Winsford doing sufficiently well to enter the Northern Premier League Division One upon its formation in 1987. They were promoted from that in 1992, and enjoyed their highest ever finish as runners up of the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 1992–93. They also reached the FA Cup First Round for a second time, losing to Wrexham, and won the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup.

The successful team was broken up, however, when manager Mike McKenzie moved on to local rivals Witton Albion. After a few more seasons in the bottom half of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, and another local derby in the FA Cup first round – this time against Chester City – the club were relegated three times in four seasons. At the start of the 2003– 04 season, they found themselves in the North West Counties Division Two. They were finally promoted, on 24 April 2007, to the North West Counties Football League Division One and secured the Division 2 title on 28 April 2007. Manager Joe Gibiliru left in the Summer of 2009 and Terry Murphy, former Middlewich Town F.C. manager, was brought in as replacement. Although at the back end of August 2009 Murphy left the club due to family reasons and his assistant, Mike Alcock, was promoted to Manager. Alcock did not, however, last long as at the beginning of September 2009 he was forced to resign due to ill health and coach Tony Ledwards was promoted to manager. In March 8

Street was to remain in charge of the team in for the rest of the season and under his management, Winsford won the North West Counties Football League Challenge Cup, defeating New Mills F.C. in the final. Street managed the team for the whole of the 2011–12 season, guiding them to 7th place. However, in June 2012 it was announced Street had left the club to take over as the manager of Ashton Athletic F.C. On 17 June, it was then announced that Lloyd Morrison had joined the club as the new manager, he had been at Flixton F.C. for the past 2 seasons. Kevin Bircumshaw decided to stay on as assistant manager. Winsford have boasted many local talents over the years such as Lee Duckworth, Joe Roberts, Les Miranda, Steve Warburton and Lee Jones Winsford finished 5th in the North West Counties Premier Division in Morrison's first year in charge, just five points off league winners Padiham F.C. Despite Winsford missing out on promotion in 2012–13, the club did win the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup for the fifth time in their history, beating Northwich Victoria F.C. 2–1 after extra time in the final. Two weeks prior to the start of the 2013–14 season, Eddie Haslam was appointed as manager following Lloyd Morrison's departure for Mossley, but after a series of poor results in the autumn, he was replaced by Rob Byrne in December 2013. In 2015 the club introduced their new Under 21s side managed by Chris Appleton. Last season, the club finished 16th in the Premier Division.

LEE DUCKWORTH Lee Duckworth is now in his second stint at Winsford United, and he is looking to progress the club forward after making numerous additions to his squad in the summer just gone. Speaking to the NWCFL in July this year, ahead of the new campaign, Lee explained what he expects from this season and his thoughts on the chances of promotion. “I think everyone will have their eye on one of those promotion places.  A good start is going to be key for everyone and we'll soon see those that aren't going to make it to those levels.  Hopefully, we'll be in the running but, again, it's a tough league to get out of.  It's a very tough league to participate in so we'll see what the first few months hold. "Winsford started the season with a 5-4 win over Gate, before going on to lose their next 4 league games. Lee played for Winsford up until 2013, when he was snapped up by 1874 Northwich where he was a player, as well as assistant manager between 2013 and 2015. As a player, he was a versatile defender who could operate as a central defender or left back, and the latter position enabled him to make the most of his excellent crossing ability, either from open play or set pieces. He originally signed for Winsford United as a 17 year old, so has been a vital part of the club going forward in different aspects. After coaching at 1874 for 2 seasons, he rejoined Winsford in 2016 to focus on playing. But that was until he was asked if he would like to take over as a player manager at Winsford when the former manager left in November 2016. There is a family connection at Winsford, as Lee’s father is also chairman of the club. Ray Duckworth took over as chairman in 2018 and told the NWCFL website: “I have been at the vast majority of Winsford United games, home and away, for the past twenty years. I’ve seen this great club in moments of elation and triumph, but also during times of struggle. “My input into this club is someone who will work tirelessly and enthusiastically, for the good of the club to secure a prosperous future. “It’s the belief of the new board and I, that this club should be the focal point of the community . We will be undertaking to ensure that this happens as efficiently as possible, whilst seeking to restore the positive times to this great club. “I believe in actions rather than words, so with this in mind I’d welcome as many of you as are willing to get involved to help take OUR club forward. It’s only through working as one, that we will achieve what is best for the club.” 9

WHO HAS BEEN ON THE BOOKS OF THE BLUES?... NEVILLE SOUTHALL Neville Southall was born in Llandudno, Wales and spent the majority of his career playing at Everton, where he made 578 appearances for the club between 19811998. Southall played for Winsford United during his youth career, during the 1979-80 season, as a 20 year old. Originally being paid £3 a week by his previous club Conwy United. He moved to the Cheshire based club and helped them win the Cheshire Senior Cup, picking up the club’s player of the year award as well. His performances attracted attention from Bury and Wigan Athletic, and he was eventually convinced to sign for Bury after being approached by then manager Dave Connor. Bury paid Winsford a reported £8,000 with a further £25,000 after he was sold on. After Bury, he went on to Everton and the rest is history.

JON WHITNEY Jon Whitney started his career at Skelmersdale United, before moving to Winsford for the 1992-93 season. He was then scouted by Huddersfield Town, where he made 18 apps for the club. In 1994 he was sent out on loan to Wigan Athletic, and made 12 apps for the Latics. He was then signed by Lincoln City in 1996, where he spent most of his career; making just over 100 appearances for the club, netting 8 times. In 1999, he went on to play for Hull City for 2 seasons, before ending his playing career with Kings Lynn in 2002. However, he then went on to be assistant manager of Walsall. In 2011, Walsall announced the departure of manager Chris Hutchings, and his assistant Martin O’Connor. Now Aston Villa manager Dean Smith took charge whilst Jon Whitney was appointed assistant manager. He also was manager of the club after Smith left.

NATHAN PEEL Nathan Peel, scored a famous goal for Burnley against Manchester United during his time at the Lancashire club between 1993-96. He started his career at Preston North End, but after scoring 1 goal in 10 games, he moved to Sheffield United to try and get his career started. A loan move to Halifax during his time at the Blades. Before making his move to Burnley, was not the scenario Peel would have wanted. That memorable goal against United was one of two goals he scored for the clarets in 16 appearances. 3 loan spells within a year; at Rotherham, Mansfield and Doncaster Rovers before making a move to Macclesfield Town in 1997. He signed for Winsford United in 1998-99 season, before going out on loan to Stevenage Borough, and then also played for fellow NWCFL side Northwich Victoria. He finished his career in 2001, at Clitheroe. 10

Winsford United 4-2 Norton United / 26th December 2006 Taken from groundhop.blogspot.com, Pavel Kuznetzov writes about his visit to the Barton Stadium on Boxing Day in 2006, when the blues played Norton United in the NWCFL Division Two. A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S GAME SQUIRES GATE

WINSFORD UNITED

Gate head into today’s game on the back of a credible 3-2 win away at Congleton last weekend.

Free scoring Winsford have won their last 2 games, and will go into todays game full of confidence. Madeley has been on the scoresheet a lot this season, and has been a threat up front so he is one to watch.

After being 2-1 down at half time, Evans’ men battled in the second half and will be looking to continue from where they left off.

Winsford do not concede a lot either.

Saturday 16th February 2019 / Barton Stadium / Attendance: 194 Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back Adam Sumner and Joe Booth, while Josh Woods was in goal Gate with Ben Fletcher unavailable. Gate made the perfect start, taking the lead in the first minute when Ric Seear cut inside past the full-back and was bought down for a penalty. Midfielder James Boyd took responsibility and fired the penalty low past the keeper to give Gate the early lead. Dan Gray gave away a Winsford penalty, and earned himself a red card, which the hosts scored from. Gate restored the lead just before the half hour mark as Boyd fired in the bottom corner from close range. Winsford were then reduced down to 10 men themselves but then got back on level terms with 20 minutes Dean Ing thought he had won the game for Gate, and sealed the 3 points for Clarkson’s men, however Duckworth had other ideas, as he netted 2 minutes later for a share of the points.

Squires Gate hosted Ashton Athletic at the start of November, in their second consecutive home game, after narrowly losing to Hanley Town the previous Tuesday. It was not a good start, as the visitors took the lead early on through Adam Gilchrist after a great move from a set piece caught Gate off guard. It got worse for Gate, this time they conceded a screamer from Matty Reid which finished off some neat play from the visitors, who were showing why they are battling at the top end of the table this season. Cusani made it 3-0 before the 40 minute mark, and Gate looked well beaten, and were going to have to put up a good fight if they wanted to get back into this game. Ashton put the game to bed, 10 minutes from time when Nicholson who was creating chances all game, got one for himself. A bad day at the office for Squires Gate.

Gate played their second match in a matter of days when they faced Whitchurch Alport 3 days after the Ashton Athletic game. It seemed as if the battering from the yellows on the previous game, had bought Gate to life, and the visitors found themselves in front within 2 minutes, James Boyd netting after shrugging off a heavy tackle in the box.

The hosts were nearly level after 11 minutes but were denied by a goal line clearance, and 4 minutes later found the ball in the back of the net, this time the goal being disallowed due to offside. Gate saw the game through to half time at 1-0. Alport got their equaliser on 57 minutes, from 8 yards. A scruffy goal to concede for Gate. They then took the lead with 19 minutes to go. Ing thought he had got a share of the points for the visitors when he scored at the back post with 2 minutes to go. However, an Alport penalty was converted in stoppage time.

SQUIRES GATE Boyd (39, 83), Iley (76)

Last Saturday, Squires Gate travelled to Congleton looking to turn their form around and get their first win of November after a run of two defeats. Daniel Cope dented them hopes within the first 7 minutes as he put the bears ahead from close range, but the visitors were given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty before the 40 minute mark.

The clubs top scorer James Boyd stepped up, and levelled for Gate. It was then Congleton who found themselves a chance to restore their lead as they were awarded a penalty before the break. Cope scored his and Congleton’s second of the game. A much better second half display from the Gate, and they got their reward when Jack Iley got his first goal for the club, and equalised again. 6 minutes from time, James Boyd scored the deciding goal of the game.

@RUSNLF If you have ever wondered what non league football is like over the seas, and in other countries, then @RUSNLF gives us a great insight into Russian Non League Football. In this exclusive interview with Dmitriy Podrubniy, he talks about what you can expect if you ever go and watch a non league game in Russia, which English non league team he follows, and his matchday routine; Firstly, how did you get into football? How did you start your groundhopping?

main arena for the USSR but a war stopped it, capacity is 13,000 now). Izmailovo Kremlin and Lokomotiv's arena also. You are based in Russia, how is the football experience different over there compared to England? The footballing world has many different football cultures. In Russia, for example, you may notice more ultras fans, more aggression between some fans, less women on the stands.

What is your usual matchday routine? What do you do I didn't really play football, except some attempts in school and before the match? University. It's more about fan's emotions. After the Russian national team grabbed bronze medals at Euro 2008, I started I spend many time to prepare for a trip. I live in a suburban to watch football more passionately. I noticed that no one area of Moscow and I usually need 1-2 hours or even more to writes about Russian non league in English. So I decided to reach new grounds. set up a Twitter page and named it “Russian Non-League Which team do you support? Why did you support them? Football”. So I started my groundhopping career. Could you tell us a bit about your local team? What was your earliest memory of football? Do you remember your first game?

Spartak Moscow; the biggest supported club in Russia. You Yes, my first game was Spartak Moscow 4-0 Kuban Krasnodar can't find any tiny town without Spartak fans. I had watched in 2007, Luzhniki Stadium. I went with my dad. Spartak in my childhood so it's the main reason I try to follow them. How many grounds have you visited up to now? Which has been your favourite? My local team is FC Keramik from Balashikha (or ex city of Zheleznodorozhny). They were named as Olimp-SKOPA a few 30. Sadly, living in Russia, our grounds are not so close to each other as they may be in England. I have only started my years ago and they had won the Russian Amateur Cup - which groundhopping since September 2018, and at the age of 24 I is like FA Trophy or FA Vase in England I guess. still have plenty of time to get to as many as I can! FOP Izmailovo, home to Sportakademklub in Moscow league - What was the first football shirt you owned growing up? my favourite and the most recommended ground to visit for Do you keep an eye on any English teams? anyone visiting Russia. Military collection of tanks, planes and Stalin's bunker right under the pitch (Stalin wanted to build the I think it was Spartak's stuff. I am also really passionate about FC Histon, from the Cambridge area. I've seen them beating Leeds United in the FA Cup so I had chosen them and now I also try to keep running a Russian Histon fans page on Twitter and also I talk with many fans and even players. Also I write about the English non-league in Russian-language blogs with a small group of people, but we have several thousands of followers. What has been the most memorable game that you have watched? The most memorable and the best, was definitely England U21 0-4 Russia U21. A small group of 6, who supported the non-league squad with English flags, and we were applauded by English players after the game - Watford’s Andre Gray was among them! 24

Have you ever attended a non league game in Russia? What makes it unique? My groundhopping is mostly non-league because of Twitter. Every non-league game is a live coverage. Russian nonleague is rather different from England as we call it amateur football but many clubs are semi-professional. There is usually no tickets, bars, any food, or club shops. All leagues don't have straight promotions and relegations (every region has different number of non-league steps - from one to even eight). Crowds are small, USSR had more (when every factory had own team and a ground). But I see that more and more new people are interested in non-league every year. Any favourite grounds in particular? Stadion Gorodskoy in Odintsovo near Moscow is situated on the roof of the parking structure. Even England hasn't such stadium I guess! I'm very looking forward to visiting it soon. In England I love other grounds from 2008/09 FA Cup fame New Lawn (FGR), Highbury (Fleetwood), Aggborough (Kidderminster). Do you have any plans to come to watch football in England? Can we expect to see you at the Gate one day?

Pictured above: England U21 players applaud the travelling fans, which included Dmitriy.

Yes, of course I want to! Firstly, it would be a big plan to see London and Cambridge. But it would be a disgrace to not visit Liverpool and then why not turn to Blackpool. You have quite a historical and touristic city! Also I wrote about your club in Russian twice - about the how close you are in position to Blackpool Wren Rovers and about when Trevor Sinclair played for Squires Gate. If you enjoyed reading our interview with Dmitriy, please check out his blog https://m.vk.com/english_non_league_football. Or you can find him on Twitter @RUSNLF or @DimaHiston

PART ONE As the decade draws to a close, at Squires Gate, Dan Hayden looks back on some of the best games of the decade. It has been a decade that has seen some shocks over the years, clubs like Blackpool have gone from playing football in the Premier League to playing in League Two and are slowly making their rise back up the divisions. It has also seen the likes of AFC Bournemouth go from League Two to the Premier League, now having been there for 5 years. It has also seen the introduction of VAR, and goal line technology which has been controversial. We have also seen South Africa host the World Cup, England reach the semi finals of the World Cup, and Sam Allardyce manage England for just one game, before being sacked by the FA. Please note, that these are not words of Squires Gate FC, and only those of the programme editor.

20. WIGAN 0 BLACKPOOL 4 14 August 2010, DW Stadium I think this deserves to be in the top 20 games of the decade. The seasiders’ first game in the Premier League, and Wigan was always a tough place to go so a lot of people were not expecting Blackpool to get anything, let alone win by 4 goals. Blackpool stormed into a three goal lead at the break thanks to a Gary Taylor-Fletcher strike, and a brace from Harewood. Chris Kirkland was also beaten by a Alex Baptiste cross with 15 minutes to go to wrap up an opening day victory for the Premier League newcomers. After this game, Blackpool topped the Premier League, and I’m sure Blackpool fans will have fond memories of this game.

19. NEWCASTLE 4 ARSENAL 4 5 February 2011, St James Park Maybe this game should be further up the list, but this was an unbelievable game, if you are a Newcastle fan, or a neutral. If you are an Arsenal fan, maybe one you try to forget. Arsenal scored after 44 seconds through Theo Walcott. Johan Djourou and Robin Van Persie made it 3-0 with just 10 minutes on the clock. Van Persie added a fourth, but Abou Diaby saw red just after the break. Two penalties from Joey Barton, either side of a Leon Best strike pulled the game back to 4-3, before a magical strike from Cheik Tiote volleyed the ball into the bottom corner from 20 yards out, with just 3 minutes left Comeback complete. 26

17. BLACKBURN 4 ARSENAL 3 17 September 2011, Ewood Park Rovers manager at the time, Steve Kean was under a lot of pressure before this game and the win was enough to see them be lifted off the bottom of the table. Arsenal did not field one English player in their starting line up, and suffered their 100th away defeat in their Premier League history. The visitors took the lead after Gervinho fired from 12 yards, past keeper Paul Robinson, before debutant Yakubu equalised for the hosts. Another Yakubu goal, and two own goals sealed the win for Rovers, and Wenger’s fourth defeat of the campaign.

16. EVERTON 3 LIVERPOOL 3 23 November 2013, Goodison Park This Merseyside derby was a Premier League classic, with both teams fired up, the result lived up to expectations. Phillipe Coutinho gave the visitors an early lead before Kevin Mirallas - who should have been sent off for a first half tackle on Luis Suarez - quickly equalised. Suarez then restored the lead just before half time but Everton, playing with the attacking intent, responded in style. Lukaku put the toffees on level terms with 18 minutes left, and then in the last 10 minutes, Everton found themselves in front through the Belgian striker. Daniel Sturridge scored for the reds in the 89th minute.

16. BLACKPOOL 4 BOLTON 3 14 May 2011 With two games left of the Premier League season, Blackpool knew nothing but a win would be good enough. A goal for Bolton within 6 minutes, through Kevin Davies from 15 yards dented Blackpool’s hopes but they responded with resilience and Bloomfield Road was rocking. DJ Campbell hit a 9th minute equaliser, nodding in Gary Taylor Fletcher’s pass. Blackpool then found themselves ahead 10 minutes later, through Jason Puncheon. But Matty Taylor equalised shortly after. However, the first half hadn’t finished yet, and with just seconds remaining - Blackpool went 3-2 up. Goals from Sturridge, and Southern rounded off the game. 27
