Is the rumor true that you are opening a new Gilley’s club in Pasadena?

Yes, and hoping to break ground before the end of the year—this will be our sixth club. I am working with Pasadena officials on building the new club across from the Pasadena convention center where it will serve as an anchor for future development. The outside is going to look like the old Gilley’s—think back to “Urban Cowboy” and how it looked in the movie and that’s what we’re aiming for. Some of the greatest music legends played at the original Gilley’s and we’d like to bring that back to Pasadena.

What is one thing you always have on you?

I always wear a Mickey Mouse watch. I have several and love them!

Who has been the greatest influence in your life?

My cousin, Jerry Lee Lewis. I probably wouldn’t have been in the music business if not for him. He was one of the finest piano players you ever came across.

What is something you would do every day if you could?

That’s easy, I’d play golf. I used to be on the golf course every day.

Where is your favorite place to eat?

I love Cracker Barrel, especially their fried catfish, greens and sweet corn. Also, I can’t pass up pork chops and biscuits, especially when the biscuits are covered in Golden Eagle syrup.

I don’t care for wine, but I like Bud Light, especially when I’m eating Mexican food. Otherwise, I like a vodka tonic.

Seeing my new Gilley’s club in Pasadena open and being a part of the first opening act. I also have a vision to have a “cousins” station on satellite radio—with Reverend Swaggart, Jerry Lee and myself!

here’s something almost poetic about it.

Right around dusk, they come, like a cloud expanding out from under Austin’s Congress Avenue Bridge. Chirping fills the air like one more soundtrack, making the Texas capital a spot unlike any other in the Lone Star state.

The colony of nearly two million Mexican free-tailed bats makes a home under the bridge every year. Call it odd, call it beautiful, seeing the bats head out each night for feeding is one so beloved, spectators pack the bridge mid-March through early-November to watch it. The bats started this tradition in the 1980s, after the

city renovated the bridge, creating crevices that are narrow, but deep and perfect for bat homesteading.

The females begin their northern migration in March seeking a place to roost and give birth. By August the evening sky is filled with the youngsters, just old enough to fly, joining their mothers in the dinnertime hunt. It’s estimated these two million Austin bats eat between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds of insects each night, making them not only a terrific tourist attraction, but incredible environmentalists.

You can watch them from the bridge, but the Austin American-Statesman Bat Observation Center, on the southeast side of the bridge, offers stunning views from a safe locale. Although their

o two days are ever alike for Jim Prappas, director of biology at Landry’s restaurants. He is responsible for all the animals and their exhibits in the restaurants. Prappas says he’s more like the “director of anything animal-related”—from designing exhibits to developing training programs for Landry’s field biologists to seeking opportunities to educate the public and support wildlife conservation efforts.

We caught up with Prappas at one of his projects known as “The Tank” at Landry’s Las Vegas property. “The Tank” has been named one of the most extreme pools in the world.

So, what’s all the fuss? Well, it’s one of the few places in the world where you can swim next to sharks—not an unusual occurrence for Prappas.

Prappas remembers childhood trips to Florida where he learned to crab and clam alongside his grandfather—and his interest in wildlife grew. “Being a biologist is my passion. When you become a biologist you’re driven by a love for animals and nature.”

As one of his duties, Prappas ensures Landry’s involvement in education and conservation. “Educating people has to be captivating, which is how we got involved with OCEARCH,” Prappas says, explaining Landry’s latest partnership for shark research and conservation. OCEARCH catches, tags and releases sharks all over the world to learn about their migration and breeding habits.

In a joint project with Landry’s, they are designing an eighth grade curriculum that teaches physics through the movement of sharks. However, education doesn’t stop there—the organization designed a shark tracker (and yes, there’s an app for it!), where tagged sharks are named and tracked in real time. Keep an eye on the tracker for “Landry”—a shark to be named in honor of Prappas’ ground-breaking work.

“In my job, I participate in things that I would otherwise never get to do—like being on the boat when they’re tagging great white sharks.” Landry’s exhibits marine life from all over the world with sharks hailing from Australia, Jakarta and the U.S. “We have a little bit of everything,” says Prappas.

When it was announced that the last cream-filled little loaf had just rolled off the conveyer belt, a collective, countrywide wail went up. The grief didn’t subside until news that the beloved Twinkie had been purchased by investors who would fire up the bakery ovens and get back to business.

A similar near-hysteria might have gripped us if— instead of Twinkies—it had been MoonPies. Affectionately dubbed “the workingman’s lunch” (with an RC Cola to wash them down) when they were created at Tennessee’s Chattanooga Bakery in 1917, this lunar confection could probably claim an even more impressive place in American history than its Twinkie cousin.

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. “With ghost hunting, the first thing I caution against is making a habit of it,” says paranormal investigator and author Kevin Frantz of the Official Ghost Tour of Naperville, Illinois.

“Try it, have a good time for a night or two, but it’s not always a good idea to get into it full force. You’re really in a dangerous place, and most people are unprepared for the things that can and do happen.”

If you decide you want to ensure yourself a good spook-sleuthing adventure, Frantz recommends going with a local ghost hunting group in your area. He also has some interesting news when it comes to

equipment: your cell phone camera is actually a better way to capture apparitions than something fancier. “High-end cameras have hot mirrors, which deflect infrared light away from the images,” he says. “The pictures are crisper and cleaner, but it also reduces the spectrum that ghosts exist in.”

In comparison, the camera in a cell phone just takes the image the way it is. “You’d think the better the camera, the better the result,” Frantz says. “But you’re going after something not meant to be photographed.” hauntednaperville.com

Pugh likes to incorporate. Using swathes of bright oranges or rich blues against white, black or gray creates a striking effect, Pugh says. And then, of course, there’s green, the color of the year. “Green is such a great neutral,” says Dianne Josephs, owner of the high-end consignment shop Atelier FifteenO-Five. “It goes with everything—and it’s so fresh with white.”

Keeping things fresh is a theme, especially with furniture. Adding antiques or etchings to a contemporary space, Josephs says, livens it up. Just mixing styles and eras in general can feel fresh. And Pugh loves incorporating large, unexpected pieces of

colorful modern art. “I like for people to walk into a room and go, ‘Wow! I wouldn’t have thought of that, but I like it,’” Pugh says. Accessories are great for achieving this effect, as with the metallic and acidwashed cowhides Pugh uses as rugs and on furniture.

Von Minden H and Cozy The otel ater

C

onstructed in 1926

by Irwin and Leonida Speckles, Von Minden Hotel and Cozy Theater opened its doors the following year to meet the needs of travelers on the Southern Pacific Railroad. To this day Von Minden is the only hotel in Texas that houses a working movie theater—and is said to be one of the most haunted places in the state.

The property was purchased by the Pettit family in 1979, but the late Mrs. Speckles is said to still show up for viewings in the theater. In room 37 of the hotel, a WWII paratrooper jumped to his death after returning to a Dear John letter from his girlfriend.

Sadly, he read her letters out of order and did not know she had changed her mind— she was there to meet him one floor below—now her spirit is said to wander the hall asking for directions to room 37. “Having hosted travelers from all over, you never know who else might be hanging around, but all of our ghost are friendly,” says Garrett Pettit, proprietor of the hotel, theater and Sengelmann Hall.

Everyday Paranormal Participating in an investigation with Brad & Barry Klinge—Ghost Lab stars and authors of the book “Chasing Ghosts Texas Style”—is a real treat. The Klinge Brothers have been at it for more than 20 years, blending fascination of the paranormal with history at sites all over the country. “We try to tell a historical story through paranormal means—and then throw in conventional science,” says Barry. Over the years their specialty has evolved into picking up audio (or EVPs—in ghost speak). “We actually got an EVP of John Wilkes Booth in a place where he was not supposed to be—watch that episode—it’s one of my favorites,” says Brad, referring to their show Ghost Lab which aired on the Discovery Channel.

Technology savvy and with a “hands-on can-do” attitude, it’s no wonder they tricked out the original Ghost Lab themselves. However, today their investigation tools are mostly handheld equipment—K2 (EMF) meters, temperature gauges and a camcorder modified to catch front and peripheral views. Their investigative process begins with an initial walk through, followed by a review of the collected evidence and then back in seeking specific responses based on the findings. “We take the John Wayne approach— bust down the door…and take names,” Barry says in his best John Wayne voice.

Brad and Barry chose not to know the background of the site or hear any of the ghost stories before they began. Their first stop was Cozy Theater. In their experience, the best EVPs are often provoked amidst normal conversation.

Barry explained the details of the modified camcorder and other equipment, while Brad walked around with an audio recorder known as an RT-EVP—it picks up sounds on a lower frequency than the human voice and feeds them back into the headphones four seconds later. Brad says, “mark” anytime he hears something that he wants to go back and review later.

Although, the investigation of the theater was cut short by moviegoers, Brad marked several things for later review. The team moved next door to investigate the hotel with only the RT-EVP in hand to find out what—or who—they could hear.

They walked throughout the hotel talking and asking questions to anyone, unseen of course, who was listening. In a typical Klinge Brothers investigation, this was the initial walk-through, after which they reviewed the evidence.

It was determined that a followup visit might be warranted.

The Dew Plan tation House

T

he Dew Plantation house, built at the turn of the century, is one of the last remaining buildings of its kind in Fort Bend County.

The plantation was known as The Belvidere Plantation until the Dew Brothers purchased it from their uncle in 1895—and renamed it. This plantation was central to the production of sugar cane in the region, helping the Imperial Sugar Company to become a thriving business. The house represents the last of a way of life that existed throughout the county over a century ago—and considering its history, certainly there must be something—or someone—still hanging around.

SLPRG prefers to do background research on their cases and Bowling was able to do some initial research to gauge possible hot spots in the home. A walkthrough was scheduled several days prior to the investigation with Downing and Bowling for the purpose of determining potentially active spots. To ensure that Downing could get an unbiased reading, she was unaware of the location’s history prior to arriving for the walk-through.

The formal investigation involved wiring most rooms with a video feed that was tied to a central monitor at “command central”— set up on the side porch. Audio recorders were placed in rooms where the team suspected there might be audio activity based on the initial walk-through. Downing did a baseline EMF reading of all rooms and noted differences in energy from the initial walk-through.

Once the lights were turned out the first team of investigators entered the house with a camera, EMF meters and audio recorders. Teams of several investigators rotated in and out of the house throughout the investigation while at least one investigator manned “command central” to tag live video feed when notable instances occurred.

The final part of the investigation was setting up a P-SB7 Spirit Box— it sounds like a radio that is picking up static—in the room that was providing the most activity in an effort to converse with any spirits that were present. A quiet set was maintained throughout the investigation—approximately 5 hours (9 p.m. until 2 a.m.).

The initial walk-through with Downing indicated that there were several female energies that were present and a young boy who she sensed on the stairs.

Culturally Significant

Deirdre Lannon, a history professor at Texas State University in San Marcos, is something of an authority on the topic.

Professor Lannon teaches cultural history that, as she describes it, is diffused “through the lens of music.”

“I think Texas has a tradition of being a ‘cultural signifier,’ and the music of Texas carries that tradition forward through time, and out into the world,” she says, noting that Texas’ vastness as a state and its ethnic diversity are important keys to the number and quality of its many musical influences.

“All the various immigrant populations throughout Texas—and I include Native Americans because they immigrated from somewhere originally as well—have had enormous interplay with one another.

Different groups have brought their various traditions to this region, and I think, have come together in a pretty unique way.”

At some point, Lannon believes the power structure in Texas made a conscious decision to identify the state with the mythic West. “Right around the centennial, there was a push to disassociate Texas with its agricultural past—and instead to associate it with a western ethos. And that ethos was characterized by Anglo men on horses and in cowboy hats.”

From Jazz to Swing

Western swing is not true western music, Lannon opines. “At its heart is this idea of the great mythologized, romanticized, openrange cowboy who captivated the American imagination—and Texas became the focal point for that mythology.” She points out, for instance, that western swing icons Bob Wills and Milton Brown, when they first got together, were jazz musicians. “They were wearing suits and fedoras and listening to blues and jazz. And they were listening

f you were to ask a nonTexan—a New Englander, let’s say—to sum up Texas music, how do you think they’d respond?

Bill Dubiel, a Massachusetts native and longtime resident of Cape Cod, answered the question somewhat predictably: “Off the top of my head, I’d say country-western, linedancing… a bunch of people having a really good time.”

His response was typical because, even among many natives, the notion of what stamps a specific sound as being Texan is often rooted in the western swing/countrywestern stereotypes with which the state has long been associated. It’s not to suggest, however, that country-western hasn’t created its own magic and mythology, or its permanent place in the Lone Star state’s musical identity. In fact, it’s beloved among Texans and outsiders alike as one of Texas’ richest musical traditions.

Here in 2013, however, even a cursory glimpse at popular music reveals that the innovative sonic “stew” called Texas music is far more varied and complex than that stereotype allows. Western swing, jazz, mariachi, zydeco, Tejano, conjunto, punk rock, alt-rock, rock and roll, religious, gothic, industrial, outlaw… the list of musical genres that have come to be identified with the state is nearly endless.

to pop crooners like Rudy Vallee, and old Appalachian fiddle breakdowns, and I think [these influences] are the perfect exemplar of Texas’ musical roots. They [the musical artists] put it together to create a pretty distinctive sound that is uniquely Texan.”

Laurie Jasinski, a research editor for the Texas State Historical Association, agrees.

“The early jazz musicians coming out of Houston, San Antonio and other localities were all major influences, leading up to the emergence of western swing on the radio up in Fort Worth,” she says. “Luckily, at the same time as some of these developments, you have the beginnings of an early recording industry that captured and preserved some of these influential musical roots.”

Texas’ music is a “regional construct” Lannon notes. “The current borders of the state were established in 1850, but the musical heritage and cultural traditions of the people reach back much, much further than that.” The unique political and governmental

burgeoning music scene. “I think it really got started in the late ’60s and early ’70s, when you had the ‘redneck rock’ movement or progressive country—maybe with a little bit of what was the last vestige of psychedelia. Then, there was opening of Armadillo Music World Headquarters [in Austin], which, between 1970 and 1980, was a much-heralded mecca for live music.” All of these factors in the decade leading up to the 1980s have helped Austin solidify its reputation as one of the most progressive centers for popular music

in the country, Jasinski says.

Add to it the development of South

by Southwest (SXSW), the big music festival that takes place every March, which has galvanized Austin’s musical street cred. “That [event] has grown to such international stature over the last two or more decades that it’s really propelled Austin’s reputation as the live music capital of the world,” Jasinski says. “So many pioneers and pivotal moments in music, all of them originating in Texas . . . it’s remarkable.”

No study of Texas music would be complete without discussing how prominently Austin figures into the mix of things. One of the most significant musical hubs in the U.S., the state capital has become a point of pilgrimage for thousands of musicians and songwriters through the years.

Lannon thinks the reasons for Austin being identified for exceptional music are threefold.

“First, the people who govern the state understand what an important cultural export Texas music is. And Austin is a college town with a lot of young people who migrated here in the post-rock ‘n’ roll era. Popular music became identified with ‘youth.’ Thirdly, the hippie rockers and the conservative, goodold-boy population known—sometimes disparagingly and sometimes lovingly—as ‘rednecks,’ merged to create this hybrid culture where a brand of ‘outlaw country’ was being played. Artists like Willie Nelson felt constricted in other musical centers like Nashville, so they moved to Austin and brought their own brand of music to the wide-open Texas plains.”

Jasinski agrees, adding that Austin’s famous Sixth Street area of clubs and music venues has helped increase the city’s legendary reputation as an ever-

te·qui·la (Spanish pronunciation: [te’kila]) is a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

equila is rich in a history that goes way beyond the Margarita. Dating back 2,000 years ago to its use during rituals, tequila has evolved into the potent spirit we drink today.

Still, if all you know about this spirit is some nauseating memory of too many margaritas in college, you probably have no idea what all the fuss is about. And you wonder why otherwise smart business people would work so hard to make “better” tequila. In the past decade or so, it turns out, so-called topshelf tequilas have become a huge enterprise, especially for the big boys like Patron in Mexico. With so much money (and high-end imagery) being spread around, it seemed time for some little guys to jump onboard—little guys with very high standards.

Before native Texan Stewart Skloss made and/or lost fortunes in media, construction and oil, he was just another college student in Mexico drinking too much tequila. Being something of an entrepreneur even then, he turned a two-day binge in the tequila-crazed state of Jalisco into something resembling a spirits company—the Houston-based Pura Vida Tequila Company. “I decided that one day, when I could afford it, I was going to buy a distillery in Mexico and build a tequila.”

These days in Texas, Skloss is hardly the only one trying to do that, with brands ranging from Republic made in Mexico but officed in Austin (the Pura Vida model) to Railean’s El Perico, marketed as a “Made in the USA” agave spirit that’s actually distilled in San Leon. Surprisingly for those who think of the words “Mexico” and “laws” as some kind of oxymoron, there are several laws governing what tequila actually is and who can (or at least should) sell it.

There is a widening industry commitment to making tequila with 100% blue agave. The process is involved, requiring cooking of the pina from the original plant, though any spirit that’s at least 51% can be sold as tequila rather than mescal. And there is growing appreciation for distinctions long enjoyed in Mexico, but only adopted recently here: silver or blanco (the clear, unaged stuff), reposado (aged two months to one year, as in “reposed” or rested) and anejo (aged in barrels at least a year, but more often 16-18 months). Pura Vida even makes an Extra Anejo, aged two years in barrels fresh from holding French cognac.

All this involves time. And, as we’ve been assured, time is money. But even that’s fine with a generation that came of age tasting single-malt scotches, small-batch bourbons and craft beers.

“Once you’ve reached a certain point in your life,” offers Skloss, “you want to live life to the fullest.”

Kent Rathbun is serious about food. The gregarious, outgoing chef and owner of Jasper’s grew up in Kansas City, learning from his mom who worked in highend restaurants and his dad who was what he calls a backyard chef.

“The idea of raising the bar on backyard cooking came pretty early,” he says of his childhood.

Flash-forward through his teenage years to his becoming an executive chef at 21, when he developed the crux of his culinary style: make it familiar; make it high end; make it special.

Those three standards still ring true in all of Rathbun’s concepts.

Take for example, the Maytag Blue Cheese Potato Chips—house made crispy chips topped with melted cheese. “This is potato chips on steroids,” says Rathbun, enthusiastic over delivering a delectably good time. They’re also made to share.

On the other hand, you might not want to share the Salt Crusted Rock Shrimp, arriving plump and delightful alongside a tangy-sweet chile-lime dipping sauce. The meaty shrimp paired with hot chile against tart citrus sends flavors bursting like

fireworks across your palate.

Texas Peach Barbecued Pork Tenderloin, a signature dish that has guests raving, is not to be missed. The smoky wood tones playing among the sweet peach, coupled with tender pork, will send you running back to the hostess stand to make your next reservation.

The Sauce: 2 ounces canola oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 each shallot, minced 1 tablespoon cracked black pepper 1 ½ cups heavy cream 8 ounces Maytag blue cheese In a small sauce pot add canola oil and sauté garlic, and shallots until translucent.

Add cracked black pepper and cover with cream. Bring cream to a boil and add Maytag blue cheese. Continue cooking for about two minutes. Remove from heat and cool slightly. In a blender, blend sauce until it is very smooth. Pass through a fine chinois and set aside.

Of course, the first decision to make is “classy or kitschy,” and designer Mekenzie Burton-Crowder of Interiors by Kenz (interiorsbykenz.com) was decidedly in the former camp when it came time to create an aviation inspired man cave for her husband.

“I used to work on the private side of the airport, with the VIPs, military planes and flight schools,” she says. “I don’t have any relatives in aviation, but I fell in love with it. When I started getting my pilot’s license, I got into vintage aviation as well, and started using elements of it in my design. I even had a chance to fly in the nose-gunner cockpit of a B-17, which was one of the coolest experiences of my life.”

Burton-Crowder’s first rule was that she didn’t want the room to feel like you’re standing in line at a cheesy Disneyland ride. “I mean, I love Indiana Jones, but I wanted it to be subtle,” she says. Her research started with vintage airlines’ stark and earthy theme colors and logos, and she chose Sherwin-Williams Urbane Bronze—a dark, warm, rich tone reminiscent of old jumpsuits and hats.

Next was the incorporation of raw elements, such as leather, reclaimed woods, and a console table made out of old steel. “Mixing materials as a design element makes sense, because that’s what they used back then,” she says. “Not only is something like a wood propeller a perfect design touch, it’s inspirational because it’s what gives the plane lift.”

Finally, Burton-Crowder reached even further into history, drawing on the forefather of aviation, Leonardo DaVinci. “Long before powered flight, he was dreaming of it, she says. “So we found some copies of old sketches that illustrated his imagination of what flight would be, and framed them. The CLS550’s mission is to transport you where you want to go, quickly and in maximum style. And it nails that, even if its stunning profile may turn fewer heads now that there are copycats at every price point. But our advice? Leave the followers in the rear view mirror—settle into the 14-way power driver’s seat, fire up the CLS and hit the road.

Investing in Mineral Rights inTexas: Who Owns What’s Under Your Land?

W

hen thinking about your portfolio, traditional investments like stocks and bonds typically come to mind. But what about assets that are not traded on the Dow or S&P? Non-financial assets that are tangible but cannot be traded on the stock market—like farm and ranch land or timber—are considered “specialty assets.” One specialty asset that particularly hits home in Texas is the right to mineral interests.

Mineral rights owners can be put into one of two categories.

The first are those who own royalty interests and take a percentage of production or production revenue from the acreage in those royalties, but do not pay for the cost of drilling.

The second are those who own working interests and pay for the cost of the well, production and operation. After the royalties are paid, these owners share production revenue with other working-interest owners, based on the percentage owned.

Letting a drilling company do all the heavy lifting has long remained a common practice, but that is not to say that mineral rights holders have it easy. Mineral leasing involves deeds and contracts that can be extraordinarily complicated legal documents with certain clauses that can change the owner’s share of production dramatically. These documents can also identify multiple postproduction expenses, such as costs for compression,

dehydration and transportation.

Each type of interest, moreover, has varying property rights and participates differently in the exploration process.1 Needless to say, some individuals struggle to understand which kind of rights they own.

With Houston’s economy heavily focused on oil and gas, today’s increasing energy needs could make investments in properties with known or suspected oil and gas reserves a valuable complement to a portfolio. However, the basic issue of who owns what resources underground can be perplexing, in part because of the history of land rights in the United States.

rights were usually controlled by the same person, but today that’s actually the exception.

One parcel of land may involve dozens of mineral owners.

Furthermore, each owner may have leased his or her rights to an oil and gas corporation.2 With all of these factors to consider, it is important to work with an expert who understands the nuances involved in each step of the process and is able to incorporate mineral rights into the overall wealth management strategy and before changing or implementing any financial, tax, or estate planning strategy.

I

t has been my good fortune through three decades as an outdoor writer and broadcaster to visit some of the finest private hunting operations in Texas and several lesser states.

Common themes behind each of their gates were, and are, comfort and nonstop preparation.

The land can be rugged, with the snakes, mesquite thorns and prickly pear, but accommodations are not. Once your boots are off and you’ve settled in a rocker on the porch, these ranches are as comfortable, in their way, as any hotel.

Good ranch help makes it look easy too, but there’s nothing simple about mollycoddling strangers when you’re 50 or more miles from even a convenience store.

Routine chores have no beginning or end on ranches measured in the (tens of ) thousands of acres. Blinds, roads, fences, feeders, wells, bunkhouses, kitchen sinks, vehicles, roofs, floors, tanks, light bulbs, barns, showers, freezers, gun rooms and now, satellite connections to television and the Internet, all must be assessed and addressed regularly.

Texas’ larger ranches are overseen by full-time hands who live on the property—sometimes in or near the main house and sometimes miles away, but still within the boundary. Come hunting season, same as at ski resorts in winter, hired help multiplies.

And no matter how many hands are hired, they’re never enough.

One friend’s South Texas hunting ranch, for example, features a perimeter fence that suffers regular damage from wild animals burrowing beneath it and hikers cutting through it. This fence, by the way, corner to corner to corner and back to that first

corner, is roughly 28 miles long.

There are cross fences that separate pastures, as well, and countless gates to be oiled and tightened.

Ranches that hold large bucks also deliver tons of expensive feed to their animals. Nature is a fickle provider; a single season of hard drought can knock an ugly, lasting dent in a valuable trophy deer herd.

Scores of battery-powered feeders, some holding as much as 300 pounds, are filled regularly, one 50-pound sack at a time.

Another friend softens his sixfigure annual feed bill by buying waste grain from Texas ports. It’s genius, really. It’s delivered in tractor trailers, pre-bagged as a courtesy, and sold by the ton.

A large ranch also may have 40, 60, 80 or more miles of roads, all of which need maintenance sooner or later.

And there are senderos to mow, yellow jackets and owls to flush from blinds, menus to prepare and cupboards to fill.

It’s hard work, and yet somehow, it gets done.

And when the guests finally arrive, eager to experience an unforgettable hunt, they surely will.

We’ll take them plain, but we like them with creature comforts.

I’ve toured deer stands, some 20 feet off the ground that featured reclining chairs, full kitchens and even climate control, thanks to three miles of a private, underground power line.

Nearly every high-profile Texas deer ranch has at least one such blind. They’re for city slickers and pretenders, mostly, guests who want to hunt, but not too early and without getting stuck or bitten or bothered.

That suits the rest just fine. Even on the fanciest ranches, real hunters still know how to hunt.

a more powerful punch than beginning one before the other. Researchers from Stanford University found that making diet changes first often interfered with an individual’s motivation to set up a regular exercise regimen because they became too focused on the dietary changes.

A second Stanford study concluded that big diet and exercise changes produce more long-term weight loss. Instead of making small, gradual changes, experts recommend setting big, bold goals. Plan on eating five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Cut out foods heavy in saturated fats and commit to exercising at least two and a half hours a week. Dieters who made major changes in their lifestyle were more likely to keep the weight off a year later.

hen you’re behind the wheel, using a hands-free phone with voice-activated texting might make you feel safer than using a hand-held phone, but recent studies show that hands-free devices can be just as distracting and risky. The American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety measured a driver’s degree of distraction created by various tasks. Surprisingly, using hands-free voice to text devices was one of the most mentally distracting tasks. And having a two-way conversation on a hands-free device was nearly as distracting as using a hand-held phone. The study concluded that using electronic devices—even when both hands are on the wheel—is likely to distract drivers and cause slower reaction times. A separate study by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute showed that sending voiceactivated text messages was equally as dangerous as manually texting.

Both types of texting doubled a driver’s reaction time to roadway hazards.

Where’s the Beef? ating more red meat not only increases your chance of gaining

weight, but also your risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to data collected from three recent Harvard University studies. Increasing your intake of red meat by as little as half a serving per day might raise your risk of developing diabetes by 48 percent over a four-year period. While the findings apply to all red meat, including hamburger, steak and pork, the risk of diabetes was greater when eating processed meat, such as hot dogs and lunch meat.

Processed meat may also raise your chance of heart disease and cancer, based on a separate long-term study conducted in 10 European countries.

People who regularly ate large amounts of processed meat, such as bacon, sausage and ham, had a 72 percent greater chance of dying from heart disease.

Processed meat typically contains high amounts of saturated fat, sodium and nitrates. Meat can still be part of a balanced diet, when choosing small portions of lean, unprocessed cuts of red meat.

orty is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40 and so it goes.

Women are looking younger and younger for their age and dressing the part. Leggings, short skirts, and high heels were not in our mother’s closets, but today women wear them and look good in them well past age 50.

It is not uncommon to walk behind someone in a cute outfit and be surprised when you catch a glimpse of their face, only to recognize they are much older than their youthful body and dress might indicate. I have shared my closet with my daughters as far back as I can remember, and so have many of my friends.

When women take good care of their bodies, should there be an age limit on when specific clothes or “look” is inappropriate?

Many think so. For example, it might become a problem when a 50-year-old mom is still dressing like her 17-year-old teen. Teens might feel uncomfortable when their mom wears clothes or sports a tattoo or body piercing that seems age inappropriate.

There is a boundary between moms and their teens, and when a teen feels threatened that mom is encroaching, they retaliate

and withdraw. Belly piercings and tattoos might help an older woman feel young, but the impression it sends to others is usually negative. According to numerous studies, women are more likely the ones to be judgmental of both other women and men when it comes to expiration dates on specific looks.

In the Huffington Post article titled, “The 15-50 Syndrome,” the author pointed the finger at 50-year-olds who look age 50 from the neck up and dress age 15 from the neck down.

According to the article, these women look to their young daughters for their fashion and style direction.

Youth is in and many women who work out, feel energetic and youthful, have begun to ask, “Who made the rule that dressing ‘fun’ stops at a specific age?” Frankly, they have a good point. To make a rule that applies to everyone is stifling.

However, being an adult means being responsible, and baring a tattoo, along with stilettos and a short skirt for a meeting at your child’s school is inappropriate no matter how old or young you are.

Below are a few suggestions that allow women (and men) to dress the way they want and still look stylish.

eadaches can be vicious, insidious enemies to a productive day; the way one goes from clicking along, feeling fine, to wondering if your brain is being slowly poached in hot lava, or perhaps there’s a sharp, persistent pounding behind the eyes. People who don’t have regular, systemic episodes like these haven’t a clue about

the degree of pain and suffering that headache victims endure, and even friends, coworkers and loved ones can seem insensitive over time to the symptoms and silent agonies of this serious medical condition.

After all, the only headache worth putting up with should be short, sweet, and strictly ice cream—or snow cone related!

Dr. Rajat Gupta, MD, Board Certified Neurologist and Medical Director of Austin’s Headache and Pain Center shares some interesting facts about the various types of head pain and how it impacts men and women.

There are as many as 300 classified types of headaches, but we’ll be focusing on migraines, cluster headaches, occipital neuralgia, and the overall medical outlook for headache pain in general.

Men are more likely to seek a physician’s advice for cluster headaches.

Women are subject to more migraine headaches overall than men, with as many as one in five women suffering from persistent migraines.

“It’s true that there are hundreds of types of headaches, but only a small percentage (10%) have known causes. I typically see patients who present symptoms of a primary headache; that is, headaches without any other mitigating factor such as bleeding, tumor or infection.”

Cluster headaches So named because the frequency is chronic and occurs at the same time of day or season. It can be so sudden in onset and sharp in nature that the individual cannot stay still, often rocking back and forth or restlessly moving as if to escape the pain. Overall, this affects a smaller segment of the population, usually one in one thousand, versus other kinds of headache pain.

Men ages 20-30 are more commonly subject to this type of headache.

Typical sufferers say that it feels like a hot poker is stabbing at you behind one eye, with tearing and drooping in the same eye.

Research suggests the gap is closing, with a 2-1 ratio of male to female cluster headache patients.

“This is a primary headache which lasts shorter than a migraine, but has such intense pain that it has often been referred to as the ‘suicide headache.’ I treat this with oxygen therapy (inhaling pure oxygen for 15 minutes or so), or injecting triptans (serotonin receptor activators) or steroids to the affected area. It’s also important as a patient to identify your triggers, such as alcohol, stress, or allergies.”

Migraine headaches Classic symptoms include a pain lasting as long as two or three days, with light and sound sensitivity, nausea and auras around the line of vision. About 36 million people per year suffer from regular migraines.

Men are five times less likely to suffer from a migraine.

Women are more likely to have migraines, and triggers can arise from fluctuations in hormones, barometric pressure changes in the weather, or increased salt or alcohol intake.

“The main reason for migraines stems from genetics. This is the most prevalent condition out there among headache patients. The effects of this headache can be greatly reduced by knowing your triggers, prescribing triptans and more recently, botox injections have been used to successfully treat this condition.”

Occipital Neuralgia This headache typically radiates from the two sets of nerves along the back of the skull, often accompanied by muscle tension in the neck.

This type of headache is equally prevalent in men and women, and can result from head injuries or whiplash, where there has been some spinal cord involvement.

Women who have occipital neuralgia can have such severe scalp sensitivity that even hair brushing hurts.

“Injecting the scalp with steroids can be very effective in treating this headache; also, we can administer radiofrequency or low heat to the localized set of nerves affected, and gain relief that way.”

While the causes and variations of headaches may seem daunting, there is hope. Dr. Gupta says, “I have a very optimistic outlook on things just in the 20 years I’ve been practicing medicine. When I started there was just one triptan, Imitrex, on the market, whereas previously there were medicines used mainly to knock out the afflicted patient. We have a much better understanding of headache triggers, as well as a whole family of triptans which are designed specifically for migraines. These are much better at reaching the serotonin receptors at play during headaches, and help us better delineate the mechanism as a whole. While there is no cure for primary headaches such as migraine and cluster, it’s no longer a hopeless diagnosis.”
