Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty State!” was adopted in 1929 by the state legislature as the state song. During the ‘60s when I was in school, we sang this song every morning directly after reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem. I still feel a great sense of pride whenever I hear it. So it should come as no surprise that it makes me chuckle when non-Texans ask me, “Why are Texans so proud?” Did you know that Texas has more official symbols than any other state? We even have an official state vehicle—who would have thought? Granted, sometimes we can take it a bit to the extreme— as I found out when we were researching “Hail Thee Texas” (page 27 ) where we spotlight just a few of the 67 official state symbols. Although not officially recognized by our legislature as a state symbol, Texas is home to some amazing fashion designers, such as Tony Lama, Lucchese, Tom Ford, Kendra Scott and Elaine Turner—to name just a few. Designs from a few Texas designers transition wardrobes into the fall in “Style” (pages 12 and 54). For those who aren’t fed up with all things Texas yet, check out “Slow Southern Brunch” (page 44) for a Texas inspired brunch—whiskey battered biscuits, tumbleweed muffins, plus more. And a big shout-out to Billy Bob’s, Gruene Hall and Luckenbach for keeping Texas dance halls alive and well, as we see in “Dance Across Texas” (page 18)—you’re still on my bucket list! Those who know me well, know that I love to decorate for Halloween (starting in August!). If you’re looking for something a bit more on the ghoulish side, turn to “Creature Comforts” (page 48) for ideas on how to turn your man cave into a cave of horrors. A
s an international paranormal researcher, Martin Leal would like to dissociate his work from the “Blair Witch Project” forever. “It’s not real,” he says of the 1999 horror film. What he finds in San Antonio with his company, Alamo City Paranormal, is real. Armed with historical tales as well as technology, like electromagnetic field detectors, thermal cameras, non-contact thermometers, Leal conducts ghost tours 350 nights a year. “I used to pay other people to do the tour, but I love it too much,” he admits. Without his grandfather introducing him to ghost hunting, Leal may never have discovered his love of the paranormal. What began as a childhood hobby grew into a passion; that passion took him out of a career in commercial real estate to start Alamo City Paranormal in 1997. Based on a scientific approach, tour-goers won’t see any smoke or mirrors on their rounds of the Alamo and haunted hotels. “The goal of the tours is to educate people about paranormal activity,” Leal says, but his guests might still be shocked when they capture a full body apparition on the thermal camera at the end of the tour. Leal vividly remembers speaking with a woman and her daughter and suddenly hearing a man yelling, “I see it! I see it! I see it!” The woman laughed; it was her husband who ridiculed the idea of ghost hunting for weeks before their tour. Skeptics abound in his profession, but Leal enjoys winning them over. One such occasion left a college student in tears after seeing proof of the energy Leal identifies as the “human aura.” “Ghosts are leftover energy, stuck on earth for one reason or another. There are normal actions and habits,” Leal explains. “Just like we can observe and make assumptions about how animals migrate, we can observe ghosts’ behaviors.”

A couple of generations ago, ‘Mr. Potato Head’ helped put the starch in toy sales.
I
n the early 1950s, a strange phenomenon began occurring in family households across America: potatoes started disappearing from kitchen vegetable bins at an alarming rate, and the odd thing was, they weren’t ending up on the dinner table. In fact, the potatoes were being purloined by children of all ages, who were using them to create cartoonish, three-dimensional caricatures, courtesy of a wildly popular new toy called Mr. Potato Head. The idea for it couldn’t have been simpler: the Mr. Potato Head kit consisted of a few-dozen pronged plastic parts—hands, feet, ears, eyes and mouth, among many others—that children could then insert into an otherwise lowly brown spud or similar item of produce, to create a comical anthropomorphic being. Despite its simplicity, however, like most ideas of genius, Brooklyn toy inventor George Lerner’s 1952 brainstorm had the rest of the world scratching their (nonpotato) heads and wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

What made Mr. Potato Head so popular is anyone’s guess. In truth, Lerner’s invention was slow to catch on. A lot of toy companies rejected it at first, concerned with a plaything that relied on actual fruits and vegetables as components. (“What might happen if the potatoes or other perishables rotted, and began stinking up children’ bedrooms?” they must have fretted.) Finally, the Hassenfeld brothers (later Hasbro), toy manufacturers from

In the 1960s, with increasing government restrictions on sharp, potentially dangerous toy parts, Mr. Potato Head’s pronged pieces were outlawed, forcing the company to develop a plastic body in place of an actual potato. The new potato torso had pre-drilled holes to insert the pieces, somewhat limiting the creativity with which children played with the toy, but, in fact, making it safer for them to handle. We’re happy to report that 60-plus years after he ambled onto the scene, Mr. Potato Head is still entertaining children, inviting them to create something that’s simply fun, from a few plastic parts and a charming idea.

Changing family structures and roles among multiple generations of immediate and extended family members affects the way family members communicate and manage their wealth. Given the shift in financial behaviors and perspectives, traditional approaches to wealth management need to evolve and incorporate the diverse outlook, roles and contemporary needs of the modern family.
Survey Methodology: The 2014 U.S. Trust Insights on Wealth and Worth® survey is based on a nationwide survey of 680 high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth adults with at least $3 million in investable assets, not including the value of their primary residence. Respondents were equally divided among those who have between $3 million and $5 million, $5 million and $10 million, and $10 million or more in investable assets. The survey was conducted online by the independent research firm Phoenix Marketing International in February and March 2014. Asset information was self-reported by the respondent. Verification for respondent qualification occurred at the panel company, using algorithms in place to ensure consistency of information provided, and was confirmed with questions from the survey itself. hen did wallpaper get such a bad reputation? Perhaps it was overdone in the ‘80s and ‘90s, but these days classic florals have been updated for today’s palettes. Geometrics and abstract patterns are abundant, and new technologies and innovations have allowed for beautiful textured papers with materials ranging from grass cloth, silk, suede, vinyl, glitter and metallics. One of my favorite ways to introduce wallpaper into a home is through handpainted scenic papers. A truly indulgent and classic look for dining rooms, entries or bedrooms, they are completely customizable in terms of the colors, flora and fauna. Many companies are now producing more monochromatic scenes that look fantastic in a modern space. Another big trend is printed grass cloth papers. Grass cloth has been around for decades. It brings texture and warmth to a space, but now that great texture is available with a pattern. Stripes, grommets, graphic monochromatic florals and geometric patterns are all being printed on top of grass cloth. Also look for metallic papers like shimmering silver leaves for a dining room ceiling, glitzy beaded papers for a bar backsplash or a paperbacked silk for a master bedroom. Banish that boring, poorly textured Sheetrock and give your walls the extra treatment they deserve.

ost people are aware of phobias because they have been the subject of films for decades. In “Vertigo,” the central character’s fear of heights (acrophobia) triggers the movie’s title. In “Arachnophobia,” spiders are the basis for the dark terror that reigns. And then there’s “What About Bob?” a poignant comedy in which Bill Murray plays a troubled man who works through multiple phobias, including the fear of germs, heights, sailing, water and darkness. Despite the entertainment value, phobias are real. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 8.7 percent of American adults—or about 19.2 million people—suffer from one or more specific phobias. And for most, there’s nothing funny about being afraid.

A phobia is an anxiety disorder described as a persistent and irrational fear of an activity, situation or object that poses little real danger but provokes anxiety and avoidance. Phobias are divided into three general categories: social phobias (fear of other people or social situations), specific phobias (fear of single panic trigger such as snakes), and agoraphobia (fear of leaving home or a familiar safe area and being in open spaces where it is hard to escape). While the list of phobias is exhaustive and runs the gamut from the common to the unusual, unrelenting fear is the basis of all symptoms, which can include a physical or emotional reaction to the feared activity, object or situation. The response often involves a feeling of panic, dread, horror or

19.2 Million Americans have a diagnosed phobia terror, and an overwhelming need to flee the situation. It also can produce nausea, sweating, shortness of breath and trembling. Researchers aren’t certain of the cause of phobias, which affect all ages, but one theory suggests there is a genetic component— having a family member with a phobia makes you three times more likely to develop one. Life events and stressors that involve observational and social learning can trigger phobias too. In addition, studies indicate that a brain structure called the amygdala plays a key role in emotions and fear response. It’s also believed that biochemical neurotransmitters such as serotonin are responsible for the physical and emotional symptoms associated with anxiety.
The Root of Anxiety In some cases, individuals can selfmanage their phobias and carry on regular lives in spite of their anxiety. For instance, if someone has a fear of snakes (ophidiophobia), it’s easy to avoid the critters by living where they don’t reside. Likewise, if someone has a fear of public speaking (glossophobia)—the top phobia affecting 74 percent of the U.S. population—the individual can simply decline invitations to speak in front of large crowds. Some phobias, though, are so debilitating that it’s impossible for people to escape their triggers. The result is an inability to work or function on a daily basis. Interestingly, phobias affect women twice as much as men and most develop by age 10. The only way to diagnose a phobia is with a clinical interview and diagnostic guidelines. It is important that the evaluation consider additional anxiety disorders, such as obsessive anxiety disorder (OCD) or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a person who might have a phobia, according to Diana

Collins, a psychiatrist who practices in Sugar Land. Collins recommends that a person with a phobia be screened appropriately by a healthcare provider for any underlying medical conditions or medications that could be causing anxiety or panic symptoms.

Phobias can consume an individual’s existence and if left untreated can increase the risk for mood and anxiety disorders. Those affected also are at risk for heart disease, substance abuse and are twice as likely to develop alcoholism. The good news is that the vast majority of phobias can be cured with proper treatment. “Treating phobias typically will involve a combination of behavioral and cognitive behavior therapy plus medication to control and overcome the response to the fear,” Collins says. The goal of therapy is to expose and educate patients about their fear and ultimately help them react differently to situations and bodily sensations that trigger panic attacks and other anxiety symptoms. “We identify the negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones and behaviors so that patients can realize they are in control and there is no power in their fear,” Collins says. “Individuals are taught to understand how their thinking patterns influence their

symptoms and learn to change patterns of thought and behavior to confront feared situations.” Medications commonly used to treat the effects of phobia include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, beta blockers to reduce blood pressure and block adrenaline, and benzodiazepines to control anxiety and depression and to increase relaxation.
Craft a Happy Ending Hollywood will continue to take creative license to capitalize on human fear with unusual names but it’s important to remember that phobias are common. And those who suffer from them can create a happy ending with professional treatment and a positive spin on their storyline.

Discover the New World wine region of

r
ecently I sat down with Arturo Cousino, whose family (originally from Galicia in northwest Spain) has been making wines in Chile for more than 150 years. In the past 20 years or so, more Americans than ever before have come to understand that Chile’s combination of quality, value and grapes brought over from Bordeaux (before the phylloxera epidemic) make Chilean wines a terrific discovery, as the conquistadores figured out in the first place. As in California (and yes, also here in Texas), initial wine production in Chile followed the padres—the friars, mostly Franciscan, who followed close behind the invading Spanish armies and needed wine to celebrate Mass. For all this antiquity, wine remained basic into the mid-1800s, when a Frenchman convinced the Chilean government to start importing vines from Bordeaux. Little could he know that the
world’s most famous wine region would soon lose all its crop, making Chile arguably the best place on earth for growing prephylloxera Bordeaux grapes. The superdry summers are credited with keeping phylloxera at bay, along with sheer distance from—well, almost anywhere that isn’t Peru. The most important (and simply the most) wines of Chile are red, not such a shock when you realize the most important grapes are those shared with Bordeaux. Cabernet sauvignon is king down there, along with merlot, malbec and cabernet franc. Still, there are a few delightful whites made, whether chardonnay or lost varieties that live on only there like sauvignon gris. Today’s Chilean wine industry is a tale of foreign investment. Chateau LafitteRothschild and Pernod Ricard of France are now making wine in Chile, as is Torres of Spain and even Kendall-Jackson of California. All these and more have read the long history, tested the soil, experienced the climate and tasted the wonderful wines that begin in this special place.
carmenere Carmenere: Chile’s own signature grape, the deepest, darkest, purplest of all red grapes needs a long growing season to reach its fullest potential. Carmenere is rich in berry fruits and spice (think blackberries and black pepper), with smooth, wellrounded tannins, making this a very pleasing and easy to drink varietal. Enjoy it with red meats and cornbased dishes, such as Chile’s favorite pastel de choclo (corn and meat pie), or take advantage of its natural fruity spiciness and serve it up with Indian curry or a Mexican mole.

Inspired by French pirates who were collectively known as “Number 13,” a well-known hospitality company The RK Group and Pelican Rest Marina, opened the restaurant late last summer. The name suggests a roguish attitude which given their Cigar Bar and Cigar Menu, is a good fit. Chefs Jason Hanin and Chris Loftis enjoy taking a creative approach to gulf coast fare. Whether dressed for a cocktail party or an evening on the yacht, begin with the refreshing signature Strawberry-Basil Lemonade—a smooth concoction of Marilyn Monroe strawberry vodka, blackberry liqueur, muddled basil, fresh lemon and club soda, served over ice with a strawberry and fresh basil garnish. Nosh on the fish tacos—batter fried red snapper or grouper folded into a semi-crisp white corn tortilla. Accompanied by crunchy cabbage and spicy pico de gallo, the tender fish is topped with charred lime, fresh jalapeño, cilantro and crema sauce, with a hint of Sriracha and fish roe. Each bite offers great balance: salty fish, crunchy cabbage, bitter cilantro, juicy tomatoes and the sweet heat of Sriracha. The Octopus a la Plancha features smoked octopus, alongside confit potatoes, pickled red onions and Spanish chorizo. Plated like a pirate’s treasure map, on this dish you’ll see a schmear of English pea puree stretching across the plate, with octopus clustered next to cabbage and potatoes cooked in duck confit. Smoked with red and post oak wood from outside the restaurant, the tender meat is splashed with lime giving a nice cut to the smoky flavor. The sweetness of the roasted potato confit makes a truly excellent accompaniment. The in-house dry-aged New York Strip with Alaskan Red King Crab is not to be missed at this steak and seafood establishment. Dry-aging allows Chef Hanin to create that slight pungence, reminiscent of blue cheese, but without the blue cheese topping that you’ll find in many Texas steakhouses. With a nice char on
the outside, the meat has a warm, juicy pink center. The garlic and Shishito pepper garnish gives some heat with an herbal mix. The delicate Alaskan red king crab tops the steak like meaty lumps of crab heaven. This dish pairs well with a good red wine or Saint Arnold’s Elissa IPA. Plan to share or ask for a to-go box, because you’ll want a light refreshing sweet to end the meal and clear your palate. You can’t go wrong with any of the desserts, however the lemon pie is worth the extra calories. Think of a pie turned sideways, and you’ve got a slice of Number 13’s lemon meringue pie. Hanin layers together pâte sablée, lemon curd, sauternes meringue and sprinkles of thyme. He then garnishes the layers with meringue crunch, ground pistachios and serves them aside a raspberrycabernet sorbet. Light with caramelized edges, the meringue tops layers of sweet but slightly sour lemon curd. The sweet pâte sablée adds a light, crunchy touch that holds the dessert together. The dish has the essence of lemon icebox pie, but the raspberrycabernet sorbet is something altogether unique. Number 13’s opulent menu could easily be found in a place such as Upper Kirby or a resort along the seawall. Beach goers looking for a great casual dining experience should try Number 13’s newest edition, The Terrace. Located adjacent to Number 13, guests enjoy al fresco dining with beautiful views of the bay. The menu is different from Number 13, a little more casual, but still fresh. Preparation Cut fish into thin 1-2 ounce strips, measuring about 3 inches each. In a large mixing bowl, combine rice flour and cake flour. Add seltzer, egg and salt to the flour mixture. Mix until incorporated. Do not over mix; there should still be lumps. Keep batter very cold. Place vegetable oil (less than 1/4 teaspoon) in a Dutch oven and heat to 375 F, using a candy thermometer to check temperature. Dip fish strips 3 at a time into batter. Then place in hot oil and fry on each side until golden brown. Remove from Dutch oven and rest on a paper towel. Season fried fish strips with salt and pepper to taste. Lightly brush tortillas with remaining oil. In a dry pan, warm tortillas over low heat. To assemble, place 1 fried fish strip in a tortilla. Add sliced cabbage and tomato salsa. hat happens when a guy’s man cave is designed to be just that? Literally a cave, chock-full of movie-themed horrors? Prepare yourself...
Step into horror film aficionado Wesley Cannon’s cave featuring some of the most terrifying creatures from the silver screen. Cannon knew precisely what he was looking for when he commissioned special effects artist Tom Spina to transform two rooms in his North Carolina home into a literal man cave—one with rock walls, sedimentary fixtures and all the requisite paraphernalia to simulate a chamber of horrors chiseled out of an underground cavern. Spina, with his New York-based company, Tom Spina Designs, specializes in creating custom sculptures, mannequins, uniquethemed furniture and decor, and the restoration of film props and costumes.

Spina and his staff of artists also create entire themed rooms and home theaters. Spina has been, as he says, “building stuff— like puppets and masks and monsters” from a young age. His early creative spark led to, among other things, a college internship with Jim Henson’s legendary Muppets puppeteers. From there, Spina took his particular genius to his own puppeteering studio before ultimately founding Tom Spina Designs in 2004. Although Wesley Cannon himself prefers to stay out of the man cave limelight, Spina was happy to talk about his fanciful creation—without that is, giving away its specific location. “Let’s just say it’s in North Carolina—
not too far from Raleigh,” Spina told us when we caught up with him on a recent Friday afternoon. True to his profession, the masterful mannequin maker was just finishing up adding fur to a lion, a task that’s probably fairly routine for him, but, for most of us, not so much. Spina says that the pair of rooms he and one of the key foam sculptor artists on his team, Richard Riley, built for Cannon is the first man cave they’ve fabricated to look like a real cavern. “I guess it had always been a dream of Wesley’s to create a home theater that was an actual cave,” Spina explains. “To anyone else that might seem an unusual sort of thing to request, but around here it made perfect sense.”

Horror seekers visiting Cannon’s cavern enter the first of two rooms, a dark, foreboding antechamber that gets visitors into the spirit of things. It leads them into the second chamber, a warmer, yellow-hued space that’s the heart of Cannon’s man cave media suite. Adorned with ominous-looking pipes, faux stalactites and rock furniture, the whole effect is like a cross between the Flintstones’ prehistoric Bedrock abode and a movie set from one of Vincent
Price’s 1960s’-era horror films. Aside from being a space for entertainment, the rooms serve as a permanent museum display for Cannon’s eclectic movie memorabilia collection—which includes one of Freddy Krueger’s gloves from “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and, similarly, a hockey mask that the murderous Jason wore in the “Friday the 13th” franchise. Spina says that Cannon’s a pure, devoted collector. “Yes, Wesley’s got the bug, for sure,” he points out. “There’s a pretty large community of people out there who collect original movie memorabilia—beyond movie posters or action figures or T-shirts or whatever might be available. I’m talking about someone who collects actual props and costumes that were used in the making of their favorite films. There’s something really cool about being able to hold something in your hand and look at it on-screen and say ‘Yeah, this is what I’m seeing in one of my favorite movies.’”

’d be surprised if the name Columbia Broadcasting System, or CBS, was unfamiliar to most people, but what many don’t realize is that CBS had its origins in the cigar business! Samuel Paley immigrated to the United States in the late 1800s from Ukraine, and eventually started the La Palina cigar company. By the early part of the 1900s, Sam’s son William joined the business. They bought a radio station to promote the cigars, and Columbia Broadcasting System was born. The La Palina brand died out, it seems that running a media empire takes time away from making cigars, until William Paley, Jr. came along and revived the brand in 2010. The La Palina line has a strong family theme, many of the cigars are named after family members, including the cigar I’ve chosen to review, the Mr. Sam, which is what the workers in his cigar factory called Samuel Paley. This is a terrific cigar with some refined and delicate flavors. The two examples I smoked, which were provided by the manufacturer, were well made, and had
refreshing and delicate flavors of earth, nuts and some coffee. It’s not a long cigar, but it smokes slow and easy, lasting well over an hour. I put this cigar on the mild side of medium in strength and body. This is truly a super premium cigar and a great example of the art of cigar blending and rolling. This was a limited edition originally, which was recently added to the company’s permanent portfolio. Mr. Sam is rolled at the El Titan de Bronze factory in Miami. A dark Ecuadorian wrapper surrounds a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan filler, creating a beautifully crafted blend that is rich with flavor. ot just any home, mind you—nobody’s parking a double-wide next to the tennis court. But outside Houston and Dallas and other still-prosperous cities nationwide, large parcels of land are being carved into multi-faceted, resortstyle enclaves that eliminate that drive and redefine the privateclub lifestyle. “It’s a trend,” said Charlie Hill, general manager of Cordillera
Ranch north of San Antonio. “Families these days are so busy. There are so many other things folks want to do.” Cordillera Ranch is a prime and perfect example of that movement. Texas is home to more historic courthouses than any other state, with more than 235 courthouses at least 50 years old and many that were built before the turn of the 20th century. Steeped in Lone Star history and folklore, we’ve compiled a few of these architectural beauties.
Denton County Courthouse {Denton}
The new courthouse, known locally as courthouse-on-thesquare, was erected in 1897 by architect W. C. Dodson— following a scandal and lawsuit between the county and architect J.R. Gordon.
Did You Know?
The first courthouse in Denton was a log cabin built in 1858 and caught fire on Christmas Eve 1875. The fire destroyed most of the county records and was rumored to have been started by an accomplice of train robber and outlaw Sam Bass—who was trying to destroy court records to free the famous outlaw.

Gonzales County Courthouse
{Gonzales}
This Romanesque Revival style courthouse was built in 1896 by J. Riely Gordonis, who took pride in the details—such as the brick that came from St. Louis, Missouri and the white limestone trim that was cut from a nearby quarry. This courthouse was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1966 and underwent historic restorations in 1997.
Did you Know?
The courthouse clock became an obsession of Albert Howard who was found guilty of a capital offense and in January 1921, was condemned to die. Howard bided his time denying his guilt and obsessing over the courthouse clock, vowing that if he were executed it would be the clock that would indicate his innocence. On March 18, 1921, as Howard was led up the steps of the gallows inside the jail, he shook his fists at the towering timepiece vowing that it would never again count down the remainder of another’s life. Howard’s was the last execution in the county, and legend has it that the faces of the old clock rarely gave the same time. Several times over the years the tower has been struck by lightning, damaging the clock.

Bee County Courthouse
{Beeville} Whitney and Heldenfeld designed and constructed the Bee County Courthouse in 1912. The Goddess of Justice tops the brick Beaux-Arts style building.
Did you Know?
Bee County’s first courthouse was built at Beeville-on-the-Medio in November 1858, had a dirt floor and a clapboard roof. A new courthouse was built at Beeville in 1860; it housed the county offices and a Masonic Lodge on the second floor. In 1878, another new courthouse was erected and then burned down in January 1911. While a new courthouse was being built, the auditorium of the Grand Opera House served as a temporary courthouse.
Milam County Courthouse
{Cameron} The first courthouse, a crude wooden structure, was also the first building in the city. It was replaced by a second courthouse which burned April 9, 1874, but not until after the county clerk was shot.
Did you Know?
A counterfeiter, who did not want to go to jail, torched the courthouse in 1874 to destroy the evidence. The one that stands today is the fourth courthouse, built by A.O. Watson in 1892. The north and south sides of this Renaissance Revival style building are identical to each other. september/october • 2014

Parker County Courthouse {Weatherford} Parker County’s previous three courthouses burned, but the fourth has been standing strong in its Second Empire style since 1886. The Seth Thomas Clock was added to the limestone structure in 1897. Recent renovations have returned the building to its turn-of-thecentury charm.
Did you Know?
The Texas legislature passed a law in the 19th century stating that effort should be made to place the county seat of each county to within five miles of the geographic center of the county. The citizens of Weatherford took this to heart and made sure their town was located in the center of the county and the courthouse is built over the exact center of the town.

Dewitt County Courthouse
{Cuero} After residing in two other former county seats, the DeWitt County courthouse was moved to Cuero, but like many courthouses during that era, burned in 1894. The present brown sandstone courthouse was designed by A.O. Watson in 1896. The pink granite used on the building was brought in from Marble Falls. Although the interior has since been renovated, the original exterior remains.
Did you Know?
Legend has it that one night, the shadow of a full-skirted woman appeared on the lighted face of the clock. No one knew who she was or why she was pacing. It was said that the lady in the clock had something to do with one of the fluted finials on the roof falling off. Fearing for the safety of the town, the remaining four finials were removed. After that, the lady in the clock was never seen again. Not only are the four original finials missing from the building, but one of the balusters on the second floor balcony is upside-down.

Somervell County Courthouse
{Glen Rose} The elegant General Grant style courthouse that stands today has a fireproof vault and was designed by architect John Cormack, who designed several other courthouses throughout the state.
Did you Know?
Somervell County court was first held in an old store. Construction started on the first courthouse in 1880 but was paused for financial reasons. Only a few years after completion, it burned to the ground along with the county records, however the walls were retained in the present building.
Shelby County Courthouse
{Center} This all brick building has served as the Shelby County courthouse since 1885. Irish architect J.J. E. Gibson designed the building’s many chimneys to be reminiscent of the castles in his home country.
Did you Know?
There is a door located in the front hallway that can only be opened from the inside. This served as the original escape door for the judge. Next to the judge’s chair on the floor is the escape hatch. If the courtroom crowd were to get upset by a verdict, the judge would open the hatch, climb down the stairs and go out the one-way door. The deputies were left keeping a watchful eye on the crowd—once it was confirmed that the judge had mounted his horse and made his escape, they would let the courtroom crowd leave.

Statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery indicate a 12 percent overall increase in cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2013—the largest since the Great Depression of 2008. Improved technology, less invasive treatments, access to procedures and a rebounding economy are cited for the upswing in nips, tucks and other aesthetic enhancements among men and women. ome are ditching their traditional mouthwash in favor of a slightly greasier dental routine. “Oil pulling” is the new oral hygiene trend to alleviate bad mouth habits like tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. Since oral bacteria thrive on fat, the belief is that by swishing and rinsing your mouth with oil, it will attract and pull the bacteria from the surface. Coconut oil, noted for its antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties, is the preferred modern-day choice for oral habit but oil pulling is not new—it’s an Ayurvedic practice that is centuries old. And it’s not a quick rinse—an article in the Journal of International Oral Health recommends swishing with oil for 10 to 15 minutes will get the job done. While no solid scientific data is available to confirm the health benefits of using oil as a mouthwash, dental experts say there’s no proof it’s harmful either.
Another Reason to Eat Dark Chocolate
A
ccording to a recent study at Italy’s Sapienza University, people with peripheral artery disease (or PAD) who ate dark chocolate were able to increase the time and distance they walked each day. Roughly one in every five people aged 70 or older are affected by PAD, which makes moving about difficult and can eventually contribute to heart disease. It’s important to note that consuming dark chocolate did not lead to massive changes in blood flow or energy. However, Dr. Thom Rooke, a Minnesota-based cardiologist, who did not help with the Italian study, says it’s an important finding worth following up on.

talian researchers released findings from a study at the 109th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association that suggest dogs can sniff out prostate cancer with a high degree of accuracy. Gianluigi Taverna of Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan and colleagues took urine from 320 men with prostate cancer and 357 without it. Those with cancer had all different stages of the disease, from very low-risk, slow-growing tumors to cancer that had spread. Two trained dogs used in the study had a 98 percent detection rate in identifying the urine samples of those with prostate cancer. The theory is that the heightened sense of smell in dogs, which have 200 million olfactory cells in their nose, are able to smell volatile compounds linked to prostate cancer. Results from the study could be particularly promising for those with this disease that kills 29,000 men in the United States each year.

Nick Frye-Cox, a doctoral student at the University of Missouri, studied people with this condition. He found that although the disordered person can describe physical feelings such as a headache, stomachache or rapid heart rate, they cannot identify if the emotion accompanying the physical is sad, happy or upset. People with this disorder have trouble relating to others, and they tend to be uncomfortable in social situations, which may also cause them to suffer social anxiety. They present as being the stoic type and avoid emotional topics. Many people with Alexithymia get married because they like the security and sense of

feeling that they belong—but it is nearly impossible to build an emotional intimate relationship with them. When surveyed, they reported feeling lonely and had low marriage quality. Alexithymia affects both men and women, but tends to be more common in men. People with this condition are constantly weighing the costs and benefits of being in a relationship, so they enter and exit quite easily because they don’t expect others to be able to meet their needs, and they don’t try to meet the needs of their partner. This personality trait is correlated with other conditions such as autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorders, substance abuse and depression. There is a spectrum for this disorder, meaning some people may suffer from it minimally while others suffer severely. The treatment for Alexithymia may be dependent on the disorder

Pablo Gomez, culinary operations manager of HUSA Management which owns Local Pour, prepared a menu of delectable bites including salmon ceviche; caprese skewers; charcuterie and cheese plates; and beef crostini. Party-goers enjoyed entertainment by DJ Triple G (Alex Supgul) and a lip-syncing battle—won by multi-talented MasterChef contestant Willie Mike. Houston Restaurant Weeks was founded in 2003 by Cleverley Stone and is the largest annual fundraiser for America’s largest food bank.
