During the 20 years that we have been together, George and I have taken nearly 50 major trips and traveled to almost as many countries and to every state. But now that we are confined to quarters during this pandemic of 2020, we have become ensconced in the 2,200 square feet that currently comprise our world. We have learned to divide our home into continents of sorts. During the day, we inhabit our separate spheres, spending time at our desks or cooking or exercising according to our particular schedules. But once the evening comes, we light the fire, turn on the lights, and adjourn to the living room, a place that remains unused until the cocktail hour. It is there that we discuss matters of the day, remember the times that we have shared, and voice our concerns for the future. As we have continued to live within the confines of our limited space, I have taken a renewed interest in the things that surround us both the objects from our lives before we met, and the souvenirs that we have acquired together during our travels. As I contemplate the shelves where we display our books and treasures, I realize that each possession has a story of not only where it was acquired, but under what circumstances. Seeing these things and savoring the memories they evoke brings me a sense of satisfaction and a feeling of comfort. The world is undergoing a seismic change, but here in our home, I cherish the wealth of memories of all that we have seen and experienced.
