Travel Collages
Introduction Over the past twenty years, George and I have shared a love of travel, exploring interesting areas of the world and throughout the United States and Canada. Along the way, I picked up bits of ephemera, from tickets to wine labels to brochures. Whether on a trip lasting several weeks or a quick weekend out of town, I would come home with too much to keep. However, I found it hard to throw anything away, for it was the stuff of memories. A hand-written restaurant receipt would take me back to a simple meal enjoyed on a sunny Sicilian piazza; a wine label, to an evening spent deep in a Georgian cellar. Allowing for my inclination to eliminate clutter, I decided to consolidate these scraps into collages that would serve as summaries of our trips. Stimulated by the idea,
I started looking for ephemera even before we left home, finding old stamps, postcards, and currency online. As we traveled, we sent postcards to ourselves as a means of collecting unusual stamps and postmarks. Once home, I cut the scraps with scissors or with a circular punch and glued them onto a board. I scanned the finished project to add to my photojournal or make into a coaster or screen saver. Eventually, I changed my technique, scanning the scraps first, and then digitally arranging them into a finished collage. Now that we have twenty years of these travel collages, I have gathered them into a book that I hope will serve as a fresh way for us to relive the memorable experiences we have shared. —Susan Hanes
