British students dodging debt and heading abroad The number of students applying to UK universities fell by 7.4% between 2011 and 2012, as more and more students take advantage of cheaper tuition fees elsewhere. Official figures released by university admissions group UCAS in February showed 44,000 fewer applicants to UK courses this year than last, with increased tuition fees thought to be behind the drop. Course costs in many European countries are much cheaper than the UK, with an undergraduate degree at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands priced at €1,733 (£1,440) for an academic year, less than a sixth of the £9,000 yearly fee charged by many UK institutions. The figures come after Universities Minister David Willets encouraged UK students to head abroad to improve networking and “cultural fluency” last year.

Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation at Harvard

The Sutton Trust will offer UK students the chance to experience undergraduate study in America after launching a US version of its successful summer school programme.

Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey launched an anti-bullying campaign in February at the prestigious Harvard University.

The pilot scheme will see 64 under-privileged students given the opportunity to study at Yale University for a week, with all costs covered by the Trust in partnership with the Fulbright Commission. Students will receive support before and after the course. “With tuition fees increasing dramatically in England and some generous financial aid packages in the US, studying abroad is more attractive than before from a cost perspective,” said Chairman of the Sutton Trust Sir Peter Lampl. The deadline for applications is 16th April, with the programme set to take place in July.

The opening of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation saw the star interviewed by Oprah Winfrey in front of more than 1,100 students, staff and guests at Harvard’s campus in Boston, Massachusetts. “I believe that if you have revolutionary potential, you must make the world a better place and use it,” she told her audience, before urging them to “challenge meanness and cruelty.” Lady Gaga has invested $1.2m of her own money into the Foundation, which aims to celebrate individuality, promote civic engagement and encourage self-expression. £26million postgraduate scholarships boost for Oxford University

Sharp increase in overseas students studying in Scotland

Oxford University has received a £26million donation to fund more tgab 35 postgraduate scholarships from Mica Ertegun, the widow of entrepreneur Ahmet Ertegun. The fund will be reserved exclusively for students wishing to study the humanities at the institution. Mr Ertegun was best known as founder and A&R man of Atlantic Records. Before his death in 2006, he was regarded one of the most influential figures in the music industry, credited with playing a key role in developing the careers of artists like Ray Charles, Elton John and the Rolling Stones.

The number of non-EU students studying in Scotland has soared over the last year, recently released figures have revealed. The number of students from outside the European Union that have taken up study in Scotland has jumped by more than 11% since February 2011 – and the most significant increase is in students from China. Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show there are now 6145 Chinese students studying in Scotland, compared with 4680 this time last year – an increase of 33%. Universities Scotland, representing Higher Education institutions in the country, said that although the statistics are “encouraging”, tighter immigration rules brought in by the UK Border Agency mean that numbers are likely to drop in the near future. President of the National Union of Students in Scotland, Robin Parker, attributed the increase to Scotland’s reputation as a welcoming country with world class educational institutions.

The money will also go towards establishing Ertegun House, which will act as a base for students and for a “senior scholar in residence”, who will provide mentoring and organise lectures, seminars and concerts. John Paul Jones, bass player for Led Zeppelin, described Ertegun as a “soul man”, adding that the money “couldn’t have come from a better place.”

Visa restrictions could put international students off study in the UK New visa restrictions could put international students off studying in the UK, two reports published at the end of February suggest. Tightening of immigration rules could lead to “unintended consequences”, said a government commissioned report chaired by Sir Tim Wilson, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire. A separate report, entitled “Education: A Great British Export?” reveals that, although the numbers of international students in the UK grew between 2001 and 2009, the number decreased slightly in 2010 to 12% of the international market. One of the restrictions imposed by the UK Border Agency last year will see the option of post-study work visa for international students being discontinued from April. The report argues against the restriction, citing a range of organisations that have highlighted the damage it will do to numbers of international students in the UK.

Why study

in the UK? Are you thinking about travelling abroad to study? Taking a leap of faith and applying to a university in another country? Considering, possibly, making that country the UK?

ravelling abroad to study will improve your future prospects and develop you as a person in ways that it is hard to imagine. Adjusting to a new culture, mingling with people from multiple countries as a matter of course, carrying out your day to day life in a language that isn’t your native one – immediate graduate prospects aside, this is an education for life. A degree from a British university is prestigious in the international job market. The fact that you were accepted onto a course and made the decision to move to another country for it already puts you way ahead of the curve when it comes to employment prospects. But why particularly a UK degree? In some cultures, it could be perceived as rude to challenge the authority of lecturers by voicing

your own opinions in class. In the UK, however, this debate and the challenging of well-established norms is actively encouraged. Students at British universities are encouraged to think independently, to question foregone conclusions and to develop their own opinions, whatever subject they might be studying. The UK is without a doubt an interesting place to live – possibly more so if you are a student than in any other case. Brimming with history, culture and multiculturalism; with free museums and galleries in their thousands – if you throw yourself into every opportunity and take full advantage of your time in the UK you are almost certainly going to emerge as more of a broad-minded and knowledgeable graduate than someone who has simply completed a degree in their home country. UK universities are massively international places. Studying at one of them will put you right in the centre of one of the most inclusive communities that can be found anywhere. It is almost certain that there will be other international students on your course, or that you will find yourself living amongst others straight away – universities like to mix international students together, especially in halls of residence. It is also very likely that you will find societies centred around your home country, where you will have the opportunity to meet other

internationals – as well as people who are just interested in learning about your country’s culture or language. Who studies at British universities – what is the make-up of the international student community? The answer, of course, is that it is extremely diverse. In the academic year 2009-10, almost 406,000 international students were registered on Higher Education courses in the UK. This is a 10% increase on the previous year. Academically, the top three subjects for international students were Business (33% of students enrolled were international), Engineering and Technology (32%) and Computer Science (24%). Overall, 16% of all students on university courses in the UK were classed as international. The three biggest recruiters of international students were London School of Economics (65% of all students in 2009-10), followed by Imperial College (40%) and University College London (36%). Don’t think that all international students necessarily flock to the capital, though – significant percentages of non-UK students (over one quarter of those enrolled) can also be found at Warwick, Bedfordshire, Manchester, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Oxford.* From outside the EU it is India, China, Nigeria and the US that send the most students to study on British soil (numbers from Nigeria and the US are almost identical), whilst from within the EU the top three are the Republic of Ireland, Germany and France. In general, studying abroad proves that you are dedicated, adventurous and prepared to open yourself up to new experiences. Successful graduates are perceived as some of the most intellectually forward-thinking people in the world. A degree from a British university is likely to be invaluable – both at home and internationally. he Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences contains an international postgraduate centre for teaching and research in exercise and nutrition science, cardiovascular rehabilitation, diabetes management, public health, weight management and biomedical sciences. These marketled and research-informed Master’s programmes are designed to provide topical, postgraduate education and specialist professional development for healthcare practitioners and for those aspiring to work in these high profile fields. The programmes are characterised by a multidisciplinary approach stressing the importance of evidence-based practice in ensuring high standards of professional service. With over 400 students currently registered and 60-70 students achieving the MSc degree each year, our centre has a high volume of postgraduate research and Master’s Theses being produced annually. Each taught module is worth 20 Level M credits and involves approximately 200 hours of total study time – which includes attendance at a 3-day intensive course (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) followed by 12 weeks of directed, home-based learning and the submission of a 5,000-word written assignment, or its equivalent. Taught modules are scheduled every 4-6 weeks and the timetable repeats annually. Following completion of six taught modules, students then progress to undertake a supervised personal research project and produce a 15,000word thesis. The 3-day structure of modules means that students do not necessarily have to be within daily commuting distance from Chester and can travel from nationwide or even internationally – to attend the series of 25-hr taught modules, then returning home to undertake the directed homebased learning and assessment. The modules can also be studied at a pace to suit each individual and the MSc may be completed in one year fulltime or up to six years of part-time study. Job opportunities are excellent with MSc graduates from all programmes gaining good positions in a wide range of careers or improving promotional prospects in their chosen field. Choosing a degree programme, let alone which universities to apply to, can be a daunting prospect. Here we look at some of the reasons why you should consider a degree course in a business or economics field.

he term ‘Business School’ can often be a little misleading; many business schools in the UK offer far more than just business and run degrees in accounting, management, economics and finance, as well as those that combine elements of one or more of those disciplines. In addition, there are opportunities to take joint degree programmes that offer elements of other subjects such as politics. An increasing number of business schools also offer four year programmes which include an element of overseas study or work experience at home or abroad. Earnings In a world of top up fees and student loans the starting salaries of recent graduates has become more important as the need to pay off debts as quickly as possible is paramount in the thoughts of many graduates. Evidence shows that graduates of business related degrees are among the highest earners when it comes to starting salaries. It is also worth considering that the majority of graduates from all disciplines will enter the world of business in some form or other and so having a business related degree can be a clear advantage. Accounting Accounting programmes, which are often combined with elements of finance or business, are increasingly popular with school leavers. Knowledge of accounting is a highly transferable commodity; all organisations need both internal accountability, to monitor and plan their operations, and external accounting reports to be able to show their financial results to the outside world. An accounting degree gives you the ability to plan, control and assess any enterprise and many degree programmes will give you exemptions from professional examinations meaning that if you wish to become a chartered accountant you will have fewer exams to take. coming an in-company accountant. Economics A degree in economics is an ideal mixture of quantitative and qualitative studies which shows employers that you can analyse often complex situations and also have both mathematical ability and data analysis skills. One of the advantages economics graduates have is their understanding of how the world works and how changes in the global macroeconomic climate, recent examples being the credit crunch and the rise in oil process, can affect the prospects of different sectors of the economy as well as individual companies. It is for that reason that the big financial firms employ teams of economists to help their asset managers make investment decisions and economics graduates also take up positions in banking, as financial analysts or portfolio managers, while a growing number undertake further study and become academics. Management careers Many management programmes involve a wide range of different areas, typical module lists will include operations, human resources, organizational change, systems, management accounting, marketing and strategy. These topics are seen as being the building blocks for an understanding of management and you can then choose to undertake further studies in some of these areas through optional modules; a common theme of management programmes is their flexibility. Increasingly, management degrees are offered as joint programmes where you can combine a study of the fundamental functions of business with specialist subjects such as information technology, tourism or leadership. Management students are well positioned to take up the graduate trainee positions which are offered by many of the leading companies but their management skills can also be applied to almost any organisation in any sector of the economy. So, don’t be put off by the term ‘Business School’. Take a look at the variety of programmes that are on offer at different universities -the chances are that you will find something which will both surprise and interest you. Or that 23% of students studying in Switzerland are from overseas, making it a hugely international place to live? Had you even heard of the Romansh language? See â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the education is starting already.

Whatever your subject, the Swiss probably have it covered. In its impressive portfolio are two federal institutes of technology, both world leaders in science and engineering research, 10 state universities, all with high research assessment results, eight universities for applied science, and 15 for teacher education. There are also several specialist institutions, focusing on administration, international affairs, finance and hotel management. Lots of choice, then... Despite the country having four official languages, the bulk of masters and PHD teaching is done in English – so if you’re thinking of studying in Switzerland as a postgraduate the language barrier shouldn’t be a worry. Alternatively, if you are thinking of studying for a bachelors degree, it is important that you know most undergraduate degrees are taught in either French, Italian or German. If your language skills are strong enough, think of all the benefits that studying in another language could bring – your degree couldn’t be more international. It’s cheap. Fees and tuition are far lower than you would find for any degree in the UK, or in many other countries – Swiss universities are publically funded, and there are also a wealth of scholarships available. Your visa will allow you to work up to 15 hours per week, meaning you can support yourself whilst you study, at least part of the way. Entry requirements are high – and yes, this might not seem like a good thing at first.

But when it comes to your degree, and getting into university in the first place, a challenge can only be a good thing (at least in the long-term). Securing a place on a high-demand course is a big achievement in itself; good things are likely to come your way later on. The location of Switzerland means its climate varies dramatically, depending on where you are in the country, and of course on the time of year. Whilst the popular image is of misty mountains and snowy peaks, the south of the country has a much warmer (in summer maybe even Mediterranean) climate. Switzerland is so small that if you’re sick of snow you can hit the road and reach sunnier climes without too much trouble. In the south, it borders Italy at Lake Como. On a related note, just look at these train journey times: west from Geneva to Paris, three hours, £23 if booked online. South to Milan, four hours, as little as £17. North from Zurich to Strasbourg, two and a half hours, £43. Switzerland is perched right in the centre of Europe, and with so many culturally vibrant places close by the chances to explore the continent are immense. And, lastly: it should be very easy to find accommodation as a student in Switzerland, even if your university doesn’t provide it. the practicalities

ou’ve been won over by the cultural opportunity and the countless museums and are already hankering after gelato dipped in Nutella (a staple of the diet here) ...but once you’ve made your mind up, what else do you really need to consider? Well, the nuts and bolts of your day-to-day academic life might be just slightly important. Here are a few practical things about the Italian university system that might help you on the way... - Semesters. Unlike universities in a lot of places, Italian universities only have two semesters. The first will run from September or October until February; the second from February to July – so really there is little difference in the time that you will actually spend in university; the terms will just be broken up differently. - Teaching. Most teaching will be done through lectures, with a very strong emphasis on independent learning. As is to be expected, the hours that you actually spend in class will vary greatly between different universities and different courses. - Exams. Exams work slightly differently to what you might be used to, in that they are mainly orals. Some subjects may have separate written exams, which will be taken at a different time, and students also have the option to reject their grade and retake the exam if they wish.

- Grading. Exams are graded on a scale of 0 – 30, where 18 is a pass. These grades are used to calculate your degree mark on a scale of 0 – 110, with 66 being the pass mark. So not first, 2.1, 2.2 here. What does it cost? In Italy universities and colleges have the power to set their own fees – so wherever you choose to study, the costs will be different. Private universities, for example, are clearly going to be a lot more expensive than public ones. On average, students at public universities should probably expect to pay between €850 and €1000 per year. Specialist courses, and doctoral courses where the student hasn’t received a grant towards their studies, will also cost more than this. Scholarships & Financial Aid Overseas students are entitled to the same financial support as Italian students. This could include scholarships for good academic performance, student loans, meal tickets, assistance with housing costs and fee waivers. Largely, entitlement to these things will be based on merit and/ or financial means. unding opportunities for overseas students who are looking to study in Australia might be harder to find than they are for other countries (Australia is a popular choice and a fairly sought after location, after all) – but this isn’t to say that they are nonexistent. The University of New South Wales offers scholarships on basis of merit or need, as well as in other more general cases – for example for outstanding academic achievement. Winners of the International High Achiever Scholarship, for which those with high academic attainment are automatically entered when they apply to the university, will be awarded between $2000 and $26,000 for one year – approximately £1360£17,660 in Sterling. Also at UNSW is the Bill Pardy University Challenge Award. The scholarship awards money to students who have completed at least one year of study, to help them contribute to the overall cultural life of the university.

Similarly, Griffith University in Queensland has over 400 scholarships and $4m on offer. It has specific scholarships for international students from Denmark, Botswana, South Africa, Canada, France, Germany and Mexico. Mexican students commencing at Griffith are eligible for ten partial tuition fee scholarships through the FUNED programme, which could give a 20% reduction in their total tuition fees. South African students will have two semesters of tuition covered in the South Africa 2012 Scholarship, whilst those from Canadian partner schools are in the running for the same with the Canadian Colleges Scholarship. For students from other countries, postgraduate coursework and research grants are available. As long as you are dedicated, have proven academic ability and good character (this is often a requirement) there is no reason why you shouldn’t be in the running for a scholarship from an Australian university. The University of Technology Sydney has scholarships for both incoming and current international students. Over forty scholarships are available, in everything ranging from engineering to business to doctoral law to leadership.

The recently developed specialisation in Law, Governance and Development is a program for development practitioners (or those aspiring to be) working in all aspects of law, governance and development in the Asia-Pacific as well as those working in a context of international institutions.

The specialisation in Government and Commercial Law offers a wide range of courses in areas such as Constitutional Law, Legislative Drafting, Government Contracts, Corporate Governance, Occupational Health and Safety Law, Dispute Management and Media and Communications Law. Students in this program can also choose subjects from the Law, Governance and Development program. In 2011, the Environmental Law specialisation is offering new courses in Commonwealth Environmental Law, Australian Disaster Law, and Environmental Protection and Human Rights alongside established courses such as International Climate Law and Marine and Coastal Law. International Law continues to offer a wide variety of specialised courses, enabling students to concentrate on particular aspects of public international law, including human rights, use of force and international security, and international trade. A new specialisation - International Security Law is being introduced in 2012 It is the only program of its type offered in the Asia Pacific with a capacity to undertake selected units from the ANU National Security College, ANU Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy, and the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. ANU College of Law graduate programs are open to lawyers and non-lawyers. Most programs are offered intensively (3-4 days) to suit both full-time and part-time study, with some courses offered online.
