“Manchester. It’s got everything except a beach,” goes the famous quote from Ian Brown, lead singer with legendary UK band the Stone Roses and Manchester resident. With worldclass shopping facilities, green countryside on its doorstep and two respected universities, it’s not surprising many Chinese students now choose Manchester over more illustrious - but more expensive - places like London to study at. Accommodation Both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University have dedicated student halls where you can settle in and both guarantee accommodation for students coming from abroad. Halls are a perfect way of meeting other students and making some friends. You should expect to share a kitchen and bathroom. If you want your own space, then check out the student areas of Fallowfield and Withington, both of which are around a 20 minute bus ride from the universities. Shopping Manchester has the best shopping facilities in the UK outside of London. The Trafford Centre is a shopping mall which houses famous brands like Selfridges, Armani and Marks and Spencer and also offers a cinema and several restaurants. If you are after more individual clothing, head to the Northern Quarter near the city centre where you will find dozens of vintage shops and plenty of bargains. For a taste of home, Manchester’s Chinatown is the second largest in the UK and the third largest in Europe.

You’ll find all the missing ingredients needed to make your favourite meal in its supermarkets, a dedicated legal advice centre where you can ask for information on visas, specialist travel agents who will be able to get you a cheap flight home and plenty of restaurants.
Entertainment Manchester is a very multicultural city, so not all nights out revolve around drinking beer and dancing. The area of Rusholme is famous for Indian and Pakistani food, with restaurants sprawled along a main road known as the “Curry mile”. Head into one of the many cafes and smoke a water pipe filled with sweetened tobacco while munching on some Indian sweets. If it’s art you’re after, get in for free at either the Manchester Art Gallery or the Whitworth Art Gallery or check out the latest film releases at the Cornerhouse cinema on Oxford Road. Finally, no trip to Manchester is complete without watching a game of football. The city is lucky to have the two best teams in England in Manchester United and Manchester City, so tickets can be hard to come by, but both universities offer discounted tickets to students.

How to fund your studies in Manchester Each year many Chinese students rely on support with funding to help finance academic tuition fees and living expenses. The British government and other UK organisations provide a number of scholarships and bursaries to help international students with fees and costs. Contact your own Ministry of Education or Education Department, as they will have details of scholarship opportunities for students wishing to study overseas. They will also be able to advise you on the conditions for studying abroad. You should also contact your nearest British Council office, which should have details of British scholarship schemes. The British Council will be able to give you information about educational and training courses and about living in the UK, including how much it costs to study. If there is no British Council office nearby, then contact the British Embassy or High Commission. If you’re looking for scholarships, try starting with the China Scholarship Council, which awards funding to more than 3,000 students each year. The Great Britain – China Educational Trust provides grants of up to £3,000 to students coming to the UK and many universities offer subject specific bursaries for international students coming to the UK.

Martin Kalany, Austria I wanted to study in Russia because I was very much interested in Russia and the Russian culture and I wanted to learn the Russian language. Furthermore, Russia is a much more unique experience than most destinations in Europe. I saw some information material in the International Office of Vienna University of Technology. For students of Vienna University of Technology, exchange programs are provided only in Perm and Tomsk. For me Tomsk is much more interesting and adventurous. I also preferred Tomsk to Perm because Tomsk offered many courses in English language. Moreover social and guidance support was really good, especially through the first few weeks. Many people in Tomsk are friendly and eager to meet foreigners; there’s lots of snow – I like winter.

Apata Oluwagbenga, Nigeria Choosing Russia to pursue my studies was a very easy decision because the education here is recognized globally. A friend of mine told me about Tomsk Polytechnic University. I have always wanted to study English language here in Russia and when I got information about TPU and the opportunity to have my studies in English, I made up my mind that the university was the right place to study. TPU was a good choice because I had lots of information about the accreditation status of the university and its academic partnership with other renowned universities. I saw this as an opportunity to maximize my potentials. Also, the fees are quite affordable compared to other universities which offer the same opportunities in other cities. Next, I must give kudos to the social and guidance unit of the department; they do all they can to help students settle fast in the new academic environment. The level of training here is quite good. The academic process is up to international standards. A quiet and serene city conducive for academic growth. I love the beautiful wooden architecture of the city.

Katia Nedelec, Germany I learnt about TPU on the internet pages of the international office of my university (TUM). I wanted to study one semester in Russia and TPU was very attractive due to its visible interest towards exchange students. In several reviews written by students who had spent a semester of a year in Tomsk, TPU was always recommended as a cooperative university with an international environment in a beautiful town. As in Germany the reputation of the organisation in Russia is very bad, I was a bit surprised that there were few problems (most of them got solved very fast). The level of training is fine; the focus is more on the practical classes than in my university. The support is very good, the international office helps us and through the Buddy-Building club we have a lot of Russian friends. TPU is situated in an interesting and beautiful city. It is not as big as Moscow, but due to the universities, there are many students, so it is easy to find friends. There are many things I like about Tomsk, i.e. excursions in the nature or just walking with some friends through the town and looking at beautiful houses.

I learnt about TPU through the Internet. I came to realise that I would study at TPU when I learnt about its status in Russian system of education. I chose TPU because I saw it as one of the leading universities of technology in Russia. The level of training is high and the relationship between international students and the guidance support is warm. When I first came to Tomsk, I had an impression of being situated in an ancient city. My favourite thing about Tomsk is “the people”, they are friendly. The warm relationships I share with the people around me in Tomsk make me feel I am at home and not in a foreign country. I live at TPU international students’ hostel, which is comfortable. My roommate is from Mongolia, we live together in a room for two. I suggest that when we have extreme cold temperatures, we should be excused from lessons or teachers should come to give lectures to us in our hostel.
I wanted to study in Russia, because I wanted to improve my Russian language. But I don’t like big cities like Moscow or Saint Petersburg. I wanted to visit Asian part of Russia. I learnt about TPU from my university’s website. Also my friends in Prague told me that TPU is a high-quality university with good reputation. Level of training and the organization of academic process are o’key. TPU has own Buddy-Building Club – it’s a very nice idea. Russian students can practice their language and international students can find new friends. I also enjoy good level of language courses. I arrived in Tomsk in August. The weather was fine and I was enjoying my first time in Russia. I quickly got used to this student city. If you are kind and friendly, you will find many friends in Tomsk. And with good friends you never feel alone. I live in hostel of TPU. It’s an awesome student’s hostel — everything is new and clean. The security is also very good. Students from Russia, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy and Austria live in this hostel. The atmosphere is outstanding.

Switzerland SWITZERLAND: CHOCOLATE, SKI CHALETS, WIDE OPEN SKIES, MOUNTAINS... AND CHEESE. DID YOU KNOW, THOUGH, THAT GERMAN, FRENCH, ITALIAN AND ROMANSH ARE ALL OFFICIAL LANGUAGES OF THIS TINY COUNTRY? OR THAT 23% OF STUDENTS STUDYING IN SWITZERLAND ARE FROM OVERSEAS, MAKING IT A HUGELY INTERNATIONAL PLACE TO LIVE? HAD YOU EVEN HEARD OF THE ROMANSH LANGUAGE? SEE – THE EDUCATION IS STARTING ALREADY. Aside from the chocolate indulgence and cultural opportunities that are potentially available, here are a few more reasons why you might consider Switzerland as a prime location of your university education. Whatever your subject, the Swiss probably have it covered. In its impressive portfolio are two federal institutes of technology, both world leaders in science and engineering research, 10 state universities, all with high research assessment results, eight universities for applied science, and 15 for teacher education. There are also several specialist institutions, focusing on administration, international affairs, finance and hotel management. Lots of choice, then... Despite the country having four official languages, the bulk of masters and PHD teaching is done in English – so if you’re thinking of studying in Switzerland as a postgraduate the language barrier shouldn’t be a worry. Alternatively, if you are thinking of studying for a bachelors degree, it is important that you know most undergraduate degrees are taught in either French, Italian or German. If your language skills are strong enough, think of all the benefits that studying in another language could bring – your degree couldn’t be more international. It’s cheap. Fees and tuition are far lower than you would find for any degree in the UK, or in many other countries – Swiss universities are publically funded, and there is also a wealth of

scholarships available. Your visa will allow you to work up to 15 hours per week, meaning you can support yourself whilst you study, at least part of the way. Entry requirements are high – and yes, this might not seem like a good thing at first. But when it comes to your degree, and getting into university in the first place, a challenge can only be a good thing (at least in the long-term). Securing a place on a highdemand course is a big achievement in itself; good things are likely to come your way later on. The location of Switzerland means its climate varies dramatically, depending on where you are in the country, and of course on the time of year. Whilst the popular image is of misty mountains and snowy peaks, the south of the country has a much warmer (in summer maybe even Mediterranean) climate. Switzerland is so small that if you’re sick of snow you can hit the road and reach sunnier climes without too much trouble. In the south, it borders Italy at Lake Como. On a related note, just look at these train journey times: west from Geneva to Paris, three hours, £23 if booked online. South to Milan, four hours, as little as £17. North from Zurich to Strasbourg, two and a half hours, £43. Switzerland is perched right in the centre of Europe, and with so many culturally vibrant places close by the chances to explore the continent are immense.
And, lastly: it should be very easy to find accommodation as a student in Switzerland, even if your university doesn’t provide it. Check out www.students.ch or www.studisurf. ch for rooms – but don’t expect them to be furnished!

Hospitality and Tourism are people industries. To climb up your career ladder, you must enjoy dealing with people. Human skills and the ability to “empathise” are of great assets. The international hospitality and tourism has global standards and very few adjustments are required to move from one country to another. Instead of re-starting again every time you take a move to another country, you will rather climb further and your value goes
up every time you change jobs and change country. For example, if you are a Front Office Manager in a large hotel in Switzerland and you move to the US, you become a Rooms Division Manager in a large hotel as well. The need for manpower will always be there as people are constantly crossing borders every year. It is forecasted that 1.6 billion travellers cross borders by 2020 compared with 924 millions crossed borders on 2008. The more people travel, the more the demand for new hotels, resorts, cruise liners, airports, etc. I constantly travel around the world to recruit students to study in Swiss Hotel and Business Schools and also to give presentations in various local schools and universities. I noticed that skills-based education, learningby-doing, or emphasis on developing the human resource were lacking in many academic curricula. In contrast to European institutions, and specifically Swiss Hotel & Business Schools, much emphasis is put on developing the human resource, human skills and addressing their specific needs. Our concern is to prepare individuals for the corporate level of the industry.

Finland FAMOUS AS A VENUE FOR HOLIDAYS AND LONG WEEKENDS, FINLAND OFFERS A REAL ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE LOOKING TO EXPERIENCE SOMETHING MORE THAN A HOME-GROWN UNIVERSITY OR DEGREE COURSE.
Not everyone will be able to afford to study for university in the UK, so why even think of studying for a degree overseas? The short version is that it can be cheaper. In Finland’s case, they do not charge tuition fees for undergraduate bachelor degrees. So you will only have to fund your living and academic materials costs (books etc). However, whilst you will thus not graduate owing £40,000 there are some factors you need to consider before setting off for ‘the land of lakes’. Quality and Choice Finland’s quality of higher education is good if not excellent. Finland has an independent
body that vets and quality audits degree programmes (Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council), its findings are made public so that Finnish Universities and Polytechnics cannot afford mediocrity. In general terms the country has both a traditional university sector and a Polytechnic sector. In reality, the Finnish government more accurately describes the Polytechnics as Universities of Applied Sciences. Even so, there is some cross-over, but Finland prides itself on having degrees that are more related to career development and employment prospects. Whilst Finland offers all the ‘usual’ choices,
its traditional focus on applied and vocational areas is reflected in the current centres of excellence identified by the Ministry of Education & Culture. These include those offering Computer Science & Engineering; Industrial Management; Motion Picture, Television and Production Design; Pharmacy; Physics; Social Work; and Environmental Engineering amongst others. Language Skills For those of you wondering what the catch is, then language might be one of them. Wonderful as it is learning any new language, how many of us would want to spend the time and money having to learn a new language? In this case, Finnish is not the easiest language to become fluent in. Luckily for Chinese students, Finnish universities have had considerable experience in providing courses taught in English. You will also find that some 450 courses (not all degrees) are offered in English. Costs and Living in Finland The cost of living in Finland is not cheap, and the Finnish government will want proof that you can support yourself before giving you a residence permit. You need to be able to show that you will be able to afford at least 6,000 Euros (or around £5,300) a year. This will not give you a luxury lifestyle. However, what is it like living and studying in Finland? Firstly, Finland is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in Europe. Its culture is a unique blend of Scandanavian modernism

Finland is the last major stronghold of the semi-nomadic Sami people (Laplanders) still practicing their ancient culture. So besides the southern cities strung around the Baltic Sea, you can head north to experience either the midnight sun (summer) or the midday night sky (winter). Catching the northern lights might be worth the trip alone. As far as travel and experiences go, Finland is a great jumping off point to the other countries of the Baltic, as well as Russia, Germany and Poland. Similarly, cheap budget flight connections mean that going home for holidays or even a long weekend are not major expeditions. Conclusion So if you think university and excitement are beyond you, or you do not fancy the forecast graduation debt levels, check out Finland. Quality, variety, diversity and a bit of excitement are part of the package.

How to find somewhere to live FINDING SOMEWHERE TO LIVE IN A NEW COUNTRY IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE MOST STRESSFUL EXPERIENCES OF YOUR LIFE. MANY STUDENTS CHOOSE TO START IN UNIVERSITY HALLS, BUT WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DECIDE TO FIND YOUR OWN PLACE? Viewing a house or flat in a new country means more than just opening the door, poking around and thinking, “yeah, it’s got a bathroom and a sink, and doesn’t smell too bad, it’ll do.” While it’s important to make sure your future home is in good condition, it also has to suit your needs. Most students rent places that have furniture already so you don’t need to buy a new bed, wardrobe, etc, but when you’re looking round the flat or house, make sure the furniture and cabinets there are big enough for what you need. If you’ve already got a wardrobe and chest of drawers full of clothes then you might want to think about where it’s all going to go as you view each place. Counting the costs It may seem obvious, but make sure you can pay the rent. That price that you see next to the pretty picture of the house or flat is what you’ll have to make sure the landlord gets every month, whether or not you spent your money on tickets to a gig or on a spur-of-the-moment holiday. In addition to rent, there’ll be bills for water, gas and electricity. You can check with your letting agent to see what typical costs are, or ask the previous tenants if they’re in the house or flat when you’re having a look round. Don’t forget

difficult – not just for you, but for everyone else in the house too – so it’s best to sort out any differences as early as possible. Also, make sure everyone is on board with dividing the cost of rent and bills. If you’ve signed a joint tenancy agreement, you’re all responsible for paying the rent whether or not someone forgets to put in their share. And bills don’t go away if you ignore them – you can end up without internet while you’re trying to finish an essay, or having the gas cut off in the middle of winter. Talk about the household finances once in a while to check that all the bits and pieces are up to date. Know what’s already broken Ask your landlord to give you an inventory of what’s in the house, and what condition it’s in – this will clear you of any responsibility for broken doors, stained sofas or cracked plaster that were already there when you moved in, and mean that your landlord can’t take money out of your security deposit to fix them. If you don’t get an inventory, make your own and take pictures of any trouble areas. Give these to your landlord or letting agency straight away, keeping copies of any emails or letters sent about it.

Location, location, location So, you’ve found a place that looks great and is cheap to rent - but it’s miles away from university. Well, that doesn’t matter because you’ll just get the bus, right? While that’s true, find out how much it’s going to cost to get the bus, and multiply that over a week or month to see how much you’re actually spending in addition to your rent. Cycling can be a great way of getting free transport, but make sure you find out if there are any rules,
costs or potential difficulties to locking up your bike while you’re in class. And speaking of locking up, check out how safe the area is where you want to live. Visit it on weekends, or during the night to get a firsthand glimpse of what it would be like walking around on your own. Even in areas that seem safe enough to leave your doors unlocked, don’t do it.
Get your money back When your tenancy is ending, it can be a really chaotic time as it means term is ending too. You and your housemates will have exams to study for as well as papers and projects to finish. Packing up and clearing out of the house is usually left to one big scramble at the end, and it’s easy to forget about the huge sum of money you all gave your landlord at the beginning of the tenancy. If your landlord’s already been round and said the place looks fine, then you’re entitled to your deposit back within ten days of the end of the tenancy. If you’re having trouble with this, pull out the document about your security deposit that you were given at the beginning of your tenancy, and contact them with any queries.
Share and share alike Deciding to go in on renting place with your friends is easy because it sounds like fun, but before you start celebrating, think about whether or not you’ll all be good living together. Not getting on with a housemate can be really

So you’ve decided to study an English language course abroad, but don’t know your IELTS from your TOEFL. There are many different types of accrediting bodies, modes of study and even countries to choose from. Are you starting to learn English from scratch, or do you simply need to improve your academic English in order to start another course? If it’s the latter, then many universities have devised a range of courses to help overseas students come to terms with the demands of studying for university graduate or postgraduate degrees. Universities understand that a lack of linguistic ability not only means low academic performance, but can also lead to an unhappy overall experience for you, the student. In the UK A year-long English Language Foundation Course helps to equip students with the language needed to cope with most graduate and postgraduate courses within a university. It is usually aimed at students who satisfy the university’s entrance requirements in their chosen area of study. Students who do not possess the right subject qualifications would then be expected to gain them after taking the course. The specific entrance requirements for Foundation Courses may vary between institutions so check their website for details. For students of lower English language ability, a pre-foundation English course is the best option. Designed to bring your language
abilities up to scratch from a basic starting point, this course can be taken over a period of up to two years and gives those who start with limited English a chance to combine their studies with an extensive experience of English life and culture. For students who have already gained both relevant qualifications and the right level of English,- and are planning on studying in the UK - a pre-sessional academic English course is recommended. This sort of intensive fourweek course helps students come to terms with the academic culture of a UK university and brings them ‘up to speed’ in their new environment from day one. Similarly an ‘English Plus’ summer school for adult students can provide an introduction to general conversational and written English. These are usually mixed with a friendly and stimulating diet of cultural activities and heritage visits. Getting your English into shape for serious academic study will always be hard work - but it can also be fun. With the right course, skilled tutors, and a friendly environment you can combine a important part of your career plan with an experience you can always treasure. Perhaps the biggest advantage of a university English course is that you will already be in a large institution with lots of modern resources which are specifically aimed at young people

like yourself. You can practice being an undergraduate while qualifying to become one. In Australia Australia is fast becoming a favoured destination for students wishing to undertake English language training. More and more students are studying English in less expensive regional cities and towns rather than in large cities in an attempt to get to know the “real” Australia. One such place is The Language Centre, located in the heart of the University of Newcastle, which offers a wide variety of English language programmes including General English and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The Centre offers an English and internship programme, where participants undertake a prescribed English language course, followed by a work placement in their area of choice in either Newcastle or Sydney. Upon successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes course, many students go onto further study at the University of Newcastle. Centres like Newcastle are also popular for group study tours, because of the variety of activities on offer and the perceived safety of its environs. Participants normally have homestay with an Australian family, and the study tours combine English language tuition with afternoon and weekend tourist and cultural activities. English for specific purposes courses are also available for groups wanting to develop their knowledge in areas such as

information, and some sample questions. You can order the booklet from the TOEFL website at www.ets.org/toefl and it is also available from US educational advising centres around the world. The TOEFL is currently offered as an internetbased test (iBT) or paper-based test (pBT). Both tests are taken at secure testing centres in various cities around the world where you can be monitored. You will be tested on your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. At the very least, it is wise to familiarise yourself with the test format and practice some test questions before you arrive at the test centre. The amount of practice you will need to do will depend on your English language ability, the time available before you take the test, and how familiar you feel with the test format.

While the TOEFL information bulletin provides some sample questions, there are also various TOEFL preparation materials produced by both the test administrators (the Educational Testing Service) and by independent test preparation companies. The test administrators’ materials focus on practising actual past questions and complete tests, while the latter are independent companies who aim to help students improve their performance on the test using a variety of strategies and techniques. If you are heading to the US to start your English learning rather than simply improving it for a course, you might want to consider an intensive study programme offered by some institutions. One place worth looking at is the Tutorium in Intensive English based at the University of Illinois in Chicago. The institution offers intensive English learning programmes where you study for up to 25 hours a week in small groups of around twelve students. These sort of immersion study programmes are a fantastic way of getting your language skills up to speed as quickly as possible, although the method of study can be quite intimidating. However, they often represent the best way of learning a new language. Learning English as a second language isn’t easy, but by immersing yourself in an English speaking country, you will learn far more and more quickly than by staying at home. Where will you choose?

Most of those scholarships available to international students are based on merit and academic standing, not financial need. Most universities offer their own scholarships to international students, and at the masters/ graduate and doctorate/post-doctorate levels many universities offer substantial scholarships and teaching/research assistant positions (which include a salary or stipend) to strong candidates.
Students coming to Canada have over 90 degree granting universities, 175 community colleges, several private language schools and many corporate training facilities to choose from. The Canadian education system includes strong student support services, small classes and active campus communities.
Cost Canada spends more per capita on its education system than any other country in the world. As a result, Canadian universities and colleges offer lower tuition rates for international students than their counterparts in most other countries. The cost of study in Canada is considerably less than the USA, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Scholarships for

Funding opportunities for overseas students who are looking to study in Australia might be harder to find than they are for other countries (Australia is a popular choice and a fairly sought after location, after all) – but this isn’t to say that they are nonexistent. It might just mean that you need to work exceptionally hard to be in the running for one – or that you should look for scholarships directly offered by the universities themselves, rather than from the government or larger bodies. Universities throughout Australia are crying out for talented
international students to come and share their drive and ambition, and the financial rewards that they are offering reflect this. Below are just a few examples... The University of New South Wales offers scholarships on basis of merit or need, as well as in other more general cases – for example for outstanding academic achievement. Winners of the International High Achiever Scholarship, for which those with high academic attainment are automatically entered when they apply to the university, will be awarded
between $2000 and $26,000 for one year – approximately £1360-£17,660 in Sterling. Also at UNSW is the Bill Pardy University Challenge Award. The scholarship awards money to students who have completed at least one year of study, to help them contribute to the overall cultural life of the university. The University of Technology Sydney has scholarships for both incoming and current international students. Over forty scholarships are available, in

everything ranging from engineering to business to doctoral law to leadership. Similarly, Griffith University in Queensland has over 400 scholarships and $4m on offer. It has specific scholarships for international students from Denmark, Botswana, South Africa, Canada, France, Germany and Mexico. Mexican students commencing at Griffith are eligible for ten partial tuition fee scholarships through the FUNED programme, which could give a 20% reduction in their total tuition fees. South African students will have two semesters
of tuition covered in the South Africa 2012 Scholarship, whilst those from Canadian partner schools are in the running for the same with the Canadian Colleges Scholarship. For students from other countries, postgraduate coursework and research grants are available. As long as you are dedicated, have proven academic ability and good character (this is often a requirement) there is no reason why you shouldn’t be in the running for a scholarship from an Australian university.
